A Little Off the Top with Ken Bolton

A word or two about memory, memoirs and waterfowl T he kaleidoscope of memory is a wondrous thing.

A quarter twist, and tiny fragments tumble themselves into a startling pattern of perception.

Another twist, another vista of the past, another “aha” about the present, or the future; perhaps an insight into an unknown temporal dimension.

And, like the river into which you cannot step twice, even a reverse quarter twist won’t make the kaleidoscope repeat itself.

Two separate events this week set my personal kaleidoscope twirling.

The first was hearing Ruth Armson speak about how she coaxes members of her memoir-writing circle to use their senses to tap into the past and frame it for the future (see Write from the Soul, page 10).

She mentioned the word mandala.

A quarter twist and my mind conjures the rose window in the Basilica of Saint-Boniface in Manitoba, three days before fire destroyed it in 1968.

Another twist and mandala morphs into my daughters’ Spirograph, then a print of van Gogh’s Starry Night on a doctor’s wall in Edmonton.

A final quarter twist and it’s seasons and cycles, and Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man, from mewling and puking all the way back to childishness and mere oblivion.

The second event was seeing Juliann Fraser’s whimsically beautiful illustrations for Todd Pilgrim’s book, Angie, the Tundra Swan (page 16).

They’re the kind of illustrations that put a lump in the throat of anyone who has ever read Goodnight Moon, or Lamont, the Lonely Monster, or The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck to transport a child to sleep.

Wait. Did someone say PuddleDuck?

A slight twist of memory and it’s no longer Jemima, or even Angie. It’s another waterbird: Slappy.

It’s 1949 in Verdun, Québec.

A student from Turkey named Nuritten Ertűrk - a superb photographer - is living with our family for a year.

On my sixth birthday, his gift is a book about a discontented duckling who refuses to practise quacking and wants nothing to do with swimming lessons.

I recall the smell of almond and honey and who-knows-what wafting through the rectory as Nurettin prepared some elaborate Turkish delicacy as a Thank You before returning home.

I hear the Turkish numbers he taught me: bir, iki, üç, dört, beş. A short list that starts with “beer” easily gets a child’s attention.

Why is this all so clear?

Because that slender little book about a reluctant duckling remains one of my most treasured possessions.

At six, I had no idea what “Nurri” meant by his inscription: “Man’s best friend is a book.”

I had no clue what Elsie Church and illustrator Cathryn Taylor were saying about embracing your inner duckness (or “pusson-ness” as the case may be).

More than six decades later, as I slink toward mere oblivion, each twist of the kaleidoscope presents a fresh perspective.

Perhaps I should write a snippet of memoir.

Perhaps I just did.

Ten years in, DJKJ is bringing the electronic bass lines above ground

“W

elcome to paradise,” Kevin Jack says.

Thus begins my tour of a property that edges onto the swampy back of Marsh Lake.

An old gold mining site, it is a refuge for old gold mining things: a tiny log cabin with grass growing out of the roof; metal drums sunken into the ground on a dance floor in front of a stage made out of trees; metal — fine-ground into a sand-like substance — now a surface on which to dance in bare feet; backhoes and Cats parked in a cluster next to the forest.

Soon, on the last weekend of August, the site will be ready to host an electronic music festival.

Tall lights will be erected where the backhoes and Cats are parked, to light up the tenting area.

There will be a St. John Ambulance station next to the log cabin, which will be the volunteer headquarters.

There will be stage lighting, a sound booth and DJaying boxes on the stage, which Jack says has a name: The Big Sleeping Giant.

Kettley Creek flows next to the stage. It is dammed into a pool, and there are plastic chairs that look like they were re-purposed from a Greyhound Bus station in the trees.

“The chill out area,” says Jack.

More chairs will be placed around the pool, which will be lit up with solar-powered coloured lights.

painter decorates faces and bodies, of course.

The Paradise Electronic Music Festival has been going on for 10 years on this property at Kettley’s Canyon, south of the Lewes River Bridge. The first was in 2005 for Jack’s best friend’s going away party.

Jack’s other good friend, Adam Greetham, owns the property, and they built the site and the festival together.

They’ve brought up some big names in electronic music over the years — in 2008, “Krafty Kuts, the biggest break-beat DJ in Brighton, UK,” played the festival, according to Jack.

Krafty Kuts drew 500 guests.

Normally about 100 people show up — that’s with no advertising.

This year, Jack is advertising, and he’s hoping for about 500 guests again.

“We’re taking it above ground.”

Jack, who takes the moniker DJKJ when he’s behind the booth, has been an electronic music DJ for 12 years. He will play the festival, along with acts like SLYNK, the headliner, from Australia, and Sickophant, Durdy Kurdy, Docta-

wub and more.

Why the tour, why the advertising, why above ground?

“We realized there was something unique about the property and the space.”

What do you want Paradise to become?

Jack says he likes the idea of Shambala — the monster-sized festival on the Salmo River, tucked in a green corner of B.C.’s Kootenays.

Jack knows Shambala now has a reputation related to drug use and disrespect for the land that overshadows the names and skills of the musicians who play the festival.

He hopes to mitigate drug use and drinking at Paradise by having a strong security presence at the gate and banning glass from the grounds.

He says he doesn’t want alcohol and substances at the festival, but he’s being realistic about the difficulty of enforcing prohibition. That’s why he’s encouraging camping and will have St. John Ambulance on site. There will be a shuttle service from the site to town.

Jack says his following is mostly a contingent of professionals — nurses, teachers and paramedics — a mature, 25- to 50-year-old crowd that prefers venues other than bars.

Jack says that over the course of the festival’s run, the property has matured. Now, for the 10year anniversary, he says it’s time to shine a light on the electronic music scene in the Yukon.

The festival starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 29 and runs till 5 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at Dean’s Strings and Triple J’s Tattoos. The Paradise Music Festival Facebook page has information on the shuttle, performers, camping and more.

The Transient Suppers provided each May are just one example of the kindness of Dawsonites raise money for worthy causes in the community.

Performers donate their time; volunteers donate their baked goods; the donation jars fill up.

May is also the month when the churches of Dawson join forces with some of the businesses in town to make sure that the newlyarrived summer workers have at least one big hot meal a week for the whole month.

Most recently, citizens have reached into their pockets and made a real effort to assist our financially-troubled local news-

paper, the Klondike Sun, which I help to produce.

This is a story I’m being urged to tell by a number of people, and if the editors here at What’s Up Yukon permit it [Editor’s Note: of course we will, Dan], I’ll spin that yarn next week.

t was nice to see Grant Dowdell and Karen Digby back at the Farmers’ Market stalls on the weekend of August 1.

After a disastrous fire took out half their greenhouse eight miles upstream from Dawson City last May, it wasn’t a sure thing that they’d be able to repair the damages and get their produce to town this year.

What helped a lot was a crowd-funding effort sponsored by the Dawson City Firefighters, that raised $15,000 over a comparatively short period of time to help them rebuild.

It might never have been possible for the fire department to help put on the fire, but it was possible to help with the rebuild.

Dowdell reports that things are as back to normal as they could be, and he and Digby are doing fine.

That whole short story is just another example of how citizens here come together to help each other. That’s not to say we’re perfect, or that things always work out well in our little town, but when the chips are really down, it seems that our best side comes forward.

Another family had a son who was suddenly diagnosed with a serious form of cancer earlier in the year. Another fund-raising effort was inaugurated to help his family travel back and forth to the hospital in Vancouver where he was being treated, so that his parents could take turns being with him.

In this case, kudos go out to people in several Yukon communities other than Dawson. This family had also lived in Haines Junction and it was actually some friends in Faro who got the campaign started.

There was also a meeting of event organizers to determine what might be done to assist.

On May 12, a family living on one of the Dome subdivision streets lost its home to a fire that moved way too fast for the fire department to do more than keep it from spreading to the nearby woods. The family lost everything.

Once again, the money-raising power of GoFundMe was called into play, and a large sum was collected to help them move on with their lives.

A single tree in Germany holds special meaning for a young Whitehorse writer

Funding your grandchildren’s education One of the best gifts a grandparent can give a grandchild is helping to pay for a university or college education.

If you’re a grandparent considering helping out with education expenses, make sure you choose the right vehicle for your contribution. This will help the money you put toward education grow faster, as well as minimize taxation.

Contributing to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your grandchild is the best approach. But depending on the circumstances, there may be other options worth exploring.

ermany: a land of farms and old cities, and the destination of my travels every two years.

It is a land with a past. Most towns here still hold scars of war in the form of bunkers that are sprawled throughout the country.

A reminder of what once was.

One such reminder is a tree.

The survivor tree.

From the balcony of my grandmother’s apartment building, it is in clear view. It seems at first to be out of place, surrounded by apartments, a factory and shopping centres. However, it commands your attention.

It is a tall tree towering over everything around it, its foliage extending in every direction. The only thing protecting it from the street is a thin fence. Garbage is strewn all around it, leaving the tree looking forlorn.

No one pays any attention to it. No one knows its story.

My grandfather told me once of its significance.

Opa had lived in the same apartment building since he was a baby. As he grew, the tree grew with him. He played under it and

climbed its branches.

Then World War II came. The town of Ludwigshafen, where my Opa lived, was no longer safe.

The constant threat of bombing weighed on everyone’s shoulders.

When, and If, it would occur was unknown.

One day the sirens sounded.

Their piercing cry forced my grandfather, then 11 years old, and his four siblings to the nearby bunker. There they waited as a wave of bombs fell outside.

When they finally had the “all clear”, they emerged to find their life changed. The apartment building had been demolished; bombed to the ground.

Just beyond the rubble and smoke, however, green foliage was still visible. The tree had survived the attack. A tree that had been so close to the apartment that if you stood under its branches you would be just a couple steps away.

It truly was a survivor.

Eventually the a p a r t m e nt m co building was rezzi. o k TO: built. By this time my PHO Opa was married with one child, my Dad. Opa moved back in and continued to live there for another 50 years, raising his family.

Now, years later, he has passed on, but the apartment and tree still remain.

Standing on my grandmother’s balcony today, I still see the tree, tall and strong. It is hard to imagine all that it must have seen over the last 100 years or so that it has stood in this spot.

Over time, things will come and go. Buildings will spring up and roads will be built, but the survivor tree will stand the test of time.

Perhaps, one day, it too will reach its end, but until then it serves as a reminder of the beauty of Germany, despite the sadness of its past, all held in 1,000 unwavering branches.

When it comes to an RESP, a grandparent can open up a plan with the child as a beneficiary. However, because the parents may already have an RESP for their child, it may make more sense to contribute to an existing plan.

If parents don’t make full contributions each year, there is an opportunity for grandparents to make up the difference. Not only will this help maximize the level of annual contributions, it will ensure the RESP is eligible for the maximum Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) of up to $500 a year.

A grandparent can gift money to the child’s parents, who can then make the contribution on their behalf. And doing it this way can eliminate the confusion that having more than one RESP for a child can create.

If grandparents do open a separate RESP for a child, they need to exercise caution. If parents and grandparents have plans, total contributions need to be carefully monitored to ensure the allowed maximums are not exceeded.

Another concern for grandparents opening an RESP is the possibility that the child will not further his or her education. Under certain circumstances the growth of the funds in the RESP can be transferred back to the contributor’s Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) if a child doesn’t go to college or university.

But a grandparent may be beyond RRSP age, and funds cannot be transferred to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). This means returned amounts could be heavily taxed.

Grandparents can also open a family RESP, through which they can name their grandchildren as beneficiaries. If one or more children choose not to attend a post-secondary institution, other grandchildren can use the money, up to certain maximums.

If there is no available contribution room in a child’s RESP, grandparents may want to consider an in-trust account. This is a type of informal trust set up to allow an adult to manage funds on behalf of a child. When the child reaches the age of majority, he or she takes control of the funds in the trust.

An in-trust account, which can be set up at a financial institution, is a good way to contribute amounts beyond those allowed by an RESP. There are no contribution limits, although unlike an RESP there is no tax deferral. However, if set up correctly, taxes can be managed by having capital gains taxed in the hands of a childwhose tax liabilities will be non-existent or small.

There are some potential disadvantages. The donor is taxed on interest and dividends earned in the plan. Once the child has control of the money it can be used for any purpose-not just education. And an in-trust account does not qualify for the CESG.

ukoners have a hidden talent.

Last August, over 800 people flocked to the territory’s first-ever comic convention, and many of them came in elaborate costumes they made themselves.

Vickybunnangel, professional cosplayer and judge of YukomiCon 2014’s cosplay contests, remarked on the diversity and talent of our local cosplayers.

So what exactly is cosplay? It stands for costume play, the practice of portraying a fictional character in costume, mannerisms and body language.

Creative cosplayers are able to transform into characters from manga, anime, comic books, cartoons, video games, live-action films or television series. osplay originated in Japan, but became a massive part of pop culture in the early ‘90s, when manga and anime went mainstream in the U.S. At today’s comic conventions, you are almost a minority if you are not in character.

Cosplayers often spend lots of time and money creating their costumes.

Why? Because cosplay is a creative outlet to become a favourite character, express yourself, have fun, get attention, compete in

healthy cosplay competition and derive self-gratification from creating something you love.

It’s a hobby of passion for many cosplayers. I believe that everyone at some point in their lives wants to be someone else for at least one brief moment. Cosplay is a great way to do just that.

Cosplayers have varying degrees of dedication: some put on a store-bought mask and call it a day, while others take months perfecting every aspect of their costumes and really recreate their character in every way.

A large number of cosplayers see it as a type of performance art. For some, cosplay is a career; they’re paid to model for gaming industries, compete in lucrative competitions, and work as designers and special guests at conventions all over North America.

At this year’s YukomiCon, we are lucky to have Andy Rae, a costume designer from British Columbia who has won several cosplay awards for her craftsmanship.

Andy specializes in armour construction, and will be teaching a workshop on armour techniques at YukomiCon. Over the past two years, she has recreated characters from Harley Quinn (Suicide Squad),

Sailor Jupiter (Sailor Moon), Holy Paladin (World of Warcraft), to Mo Moxxi (Borderlands) and the Diablo III Barbarian.

In a recent interview with World of Nerd, Andy explained why she cosplays.

“Cosplay is like an outlet for me, it’s a way to show my creativity off to the world and challenge myself each time with bigger and harder builds “I feel sometimes like the dayto-day of life can really get me stuck in a rut and cosplay is a way for me to relax from all of that and let my imagination flow!”

Get out your sewing machines, glue guns, wigs, and makeup and get ready for the YukomiCon 2015 cosplay contests on Saturday, August 22.

This year’s youth and adult contests will be open to all attendees at no extra cost; contestants under 18 will have a chance to compete for $225 in prize values and trophies, and the adult contest has $300 in cash prizes plus trophies.

Write from the Soul

She’s not in the classroom these days, but Ruth Armson isn’t done with teaching

W

hat’s an English teacher to do once she retires: take a trip through the Northwest Passage?

Ruth Armson did that, and wrote about it.

Compile an autobiography, perhaps? She did that, too.

“I’d been away from home since I was 15, and I thought, ‘What’s a better way of letting my family know what my life has been like?’

“I come from quite a large family, and there are a lot of them scattered everywhere, so I thought I would write it and give the eldest person in each family the book. They really liked it. It worked out quite well,” she says.

Armson may have left the classroom behind, but she still felt the urge to teach.

“I wanted to do something with seniors and writing, because I do like writing,” she says.

“I didn’t think autobiographies were the way to go, because they’re kind of a solitary thing.”

After doing some research, she

found herself attracted to the idea of memoirs, “and how much fun they can be in groups”, with participants writing and sharing short, theme-based vignettes drawn from their own life experiences.

After more research, Armson settled on the theme of Writing from the Soul, and set about gathering a circle of would-be writers willing to meet for two hours each week.

“Most of them were seniors, because I held it in the morning, so I didn’t really have people who were still in the workforce.”

Over the course of five years, Armson conducted six separate sessions, each one lasting for 10 weeks.

“And I was lucky, I got some really good writers. I don’t necessarily mean that they wrote beautifully, but they had wonderful ideas and everybody got along really well.”

Armson’s role - an unpaid one, at that - was “to be a facilitator; I would motivate them and give ex-

amples,” she explains.

“I introduced a topic each week, and they wrote on that topic, but in any area of their lives. They started with just paragraphs, but eventually it grew into three- or four-page write-ups.”

Years of drawing up lesson plans made it easy for Armson to come up with topics and themes, such as Joinings and Separations, Chance and Choice, or Embarrassing Moments.

“One we did that was really fun was called the Dream Police, where they got five minutes to choose 10 things they would take out of the house, and that’s it.”

Each session, she would assign a specific project for every student to tackle. One year it was to create a mandala.

Ruth Armson has four standard tips for writers: focus; always use your five senses; show, don’t tell; choose your vocabulary really, really carefully soul - you know, your faith, your emotions, your soul - and then you spread out from that into the world and so on. And you told how your stories that you did through the whole session tied into the centre of your mandala,” she says.

“That was beautiful. We got all kinds of things I would never have thought of.”

After taking a one-year break from facilitating her story circle,

Armson is ready to get a new group together for an eight-week session this fall.

n the summer of 2002, a friend and I were travelling back from Haines, Alaska to Whitehorse. A few miles before Haines Junction we noticed several cars stopped on the highway.

I thought there must be an animal by the road that had attracted people to stop. Sure enough, there was a bear, a light brown grizzly bear. However, the bear was more interested in what he was eating than in his audience He appeared rather relaxed in a sitting position and was busy eating something that I noticed was soapberries - ripe soapberries. Besides making delicious desserts, soapberries get their name from being one of the best natural laundry detergents ever discovered sumed it would.

I wouldn’t have believed that a grizzly bear could be so gentle while holding the branches and eating soapberries! I couldn’t help but wonder how he knew the berries would fall to the ground if he wasn’t gentle.

I had just been gathering soapberries a few miles before the bear’s spot (luckily) by the side of the road. I knew that the berries would fall to the ground if I wasn’t prepared and if wasn’t being gentle while I harvested these.

I learned how to gather these berries from my mother, Carrie, during the early 1950s.

I lived with my Mom, my sisters and brothers, at our house just below the escarpment at the north end of Seventh Avenue.

It was late summer, time for ripe soapberries, and Mom said there were soapberries up there on the clay cliffs. We gathered the equipment we needed and went up the trail.

The climb was easy, going up in a zigzag fashion. We got to the top of the cliffs where it was quiet

and peaceful, and the environment was clean up there.

Mom was right: there were soapberries there.

First you could smell them!

There were plenty, and they were bright red and juicy, too. You only had to touch the bush and the berries would fall off!

Like the bear, Mom knew the berries would fall off easily. She had a piece of canvas, which she spread under the bush and used a small willow to gently hit the branches so the berries would fall off onto it.

Then she would fold up the canvas so that she could funnel the berries into our packsacks.

When we had filled our sacks, we hiked back home down the trail. I knew we would be having soapberries later on after supper that night I have always enjoyed soapberries myself. However, my mother ate ripe soapberries right off the bush; she loved them that way.

She taught us how to prepare soapberries to eat in another way.

froth, similar to a meringue and to add sweetener.

I have written this teaching as follows, and I call it: Carrie’s Clay Cliff Soapberry Dessert Clean your berries (there will be many leaves which will also fall off the bushes along with the berries) by putting them in water so the leaves float and can be easily skimmed off.

The skimming can be put back to nature, either in the compost or just out around where you picked them. (Back then, we would just spread them around our natural yard.)

Gather your mixing bowl, preferably a stainless steel, glass or enamel one (the size will depend on how many servings you make).

Select a beater of your preference. My favorite is the natural one made of a freshly cut, thick green poplar branch. The branch needs to be peeled, except for the handle end, and the peeled cont’d on page 13...

Gentle Grizzly ... cont’d end mashed down with a rock I learned this from older girls at the residential school in Whitehorse.

Back in the ‘50s, the handheld beater was rather awkward for soapberries, so Mom used her hand, shaped like a beater, to stir the berries into a pink froth in a large enamel bowl.

You will need about a quarter of a cup of soapberries for three or more servings; A small container of water; Some sweetener, to taste or diet.

Put the berries into the bowl and slowly start beating the ripe

berries. They will start to foam up. Add water, very little at a time. This will cause the berries to foam up more and the mixture will start becoming a beautiful light pink colour.

You will be able to tell when the berries will not foam up anymore, and this is when you can start adding sweetener. You will notice the consistency becoming firmer and thicker; you can taste as you go along and add more sweetener if you like.

Enjoy! And don’t be concerned that any leftover froth/meringue deflates, because you can beat them again into a froth.

Most people who eat these berries have an acquired taste.

People new to the taste will notice this.

My mother also said that the bear made soapberry dessert by stirring them up. But that’s another story!

A beautifully-illustrated children’s book recounts a Yukoner’s unusual friendship

Children’s author Todd Pilgrim and illustrator Juliann Fraser teamed up to tell Angie’s story

O

ne day in 2011, Todd Pilgrim was returning from a hike when he saw something grey and silverish by the road.

As he went closer, he discovered that it was a young tundra swan. It had a drooping wing and couldn’t fly away.

That’s how real-life tale behind Pilgrim’s children’s book, Angie, the Tundra Swan, began. He rescued the young swan and named her Angie, because her wings looked like the wings of an angel.

He brought her to a vet in Whitehorse, who bandaged Angie’s wing and told him it would take two weeks until she could fly again.

Pilgrim then took the bird to his home to nurse her back to health.

“The most challenging thing in living with Angie was her loud calls,” Pilgrim says in an e-mail interview.

“It was deafening, but I got used to it. She would call out to me when she was bored.”

After a while, Pilgrim would start imitating the

swan’s calls. As he describes in the book, he got down on his knees, to be at Angie’s eye level, then squawked with her, like two swans having a conversation “I was not sure what’s being said in swan language,” he says, “but we had lots of fun.”

Another challenge was the mess on the floor.

“The poo was mostly liquid,” Pilgrim says, “so I laid newspapers all over the floor, and it wasn’t much of a problem.”

Beside the loud swan calls and the poop, Pilgrim and his new roommate became friends.

When he went to bed, Angie followed him to the bedroom. Pilgrim laid a pillow on the floor, so she could sleep beside him.

Angie also spent a lot of time in his goldfish pond where she swam.

Pilgrim wrote that he became curious about tundra swans and did some research. He found out that they mate for life, and wait almost one year before breeding.

He discovered that female swans incubate three to five eggs for 32 days.

After reading these facts, he had second thoughts about keeping Angie as a pet. If he kept her, she would miss out on finding a mate and having children.

Angie recovered and began flapping her wings fully. As she looked through the living room window and saw other birds flying, she would make soft calls to Pilgrim.

“I thought Angie was telling me that she was ready to go to her natural habitat,” he explains.

So he picked her up and took her for a short drive.

“It was very hard to set Angie free. I reported her to an officer of the Canadian Wildlife Service. He informed me to release her at the McIntyre Marsh, near Fish Lake Road.”

Angie, the Tundra Swan tells the tale of a brief but memorable friendship After the two had developed such a strong connection, it was also difficult for Angie to leave.

Pilgrim writes in the book that Angie kept calling out to him until he left her and drove away. He was sad to let her go, but it was the right thing to do, he wrote.

After they had parted company, Pilgrim was going through the photographs he had taken of Angie.

“I thought this would make a great children’s story,” he says.

“I used the photos I took and made up the story according to the photos. This only took me about a few hours.

“I then made a few copies and gave them to some of my friends’ kids around Whitehorse as Christmas gifts. I got some great feedback and they all told me that I should get this published.”

It took time to find the right illustrator for his project, but Pilgrim eventually recruited fellow-Yukoner Juliann Fraser to do the colourful drawings that help tell Angie’s story.

Angie, the Tundra Swan is Pilgrim’s first published book, but, “I have a lot more stories on the sleeve,” he says.

The book is self-published with assistance from Friesen Press and will come out shortly. It will be available at Mac’s Fireweed Bookstore, Angelina’s Toy Boutique and Cole’s Bookstore for $18.98.

“N

ever heard of it!”

That was my first thought when my aunt said Yukon Territory. Other than knowing it was part of Canada and that I had family there, I was clueless about my possible new address.

So I did my homework; I Googled.

Since then, “more or less two hours away from Alaska” has become my standard answer to anyone who has also never heard of the Yukon.

And for those who were genuinely worried about me going so far away, I assuaged their apprehensions (and mine) by romanticizing the idea – I would be closer to the North Pole.

The Philippines is dubbed as the Perlas ng Silangan, which translates to Pearl of the Orient or Pearl of the East.

This is why I found it a bit amusing that at 6:00 o’clock on a June morning in 2014, I would leave my homeland in darkness and, 16 hours and 10,000 kilometres later, would arrive to a bright and sunny

late evening in Whitehorse I may have come from the East, but the North, at that time of summer, surely felt like the perpetual East – a land where the sun seemingly NEVER sets.

As someone from the tropics, I was comforted by the warmth of the midnight sun on my skin.

At the same time, I was a bit unnerved.

“What if it’s giving its all now coz it will be gone for a while?” my right-side brain asked.

True enough, the days got shorter and as the first snow of winter fell and iced the roads, I had one goal in mind: NEVER slip.

I took this so much to heart that I had my mother send me undergarments with posterior paddings.

The intention of getting them was so that in the event that I did slip, they would cushion my landing and not make the experience a total bummer (pun intended).

Thankfully, I did not have to use that precautionary measure, as my first winter was surprisingly OK - perhaps because it was relatively kinder than previous ones,

as true Yukoners concluded.

Clear sky during the night also made the cold bearable, as the probability of a display of the Northern Lights was enough invigoration for me to NEVER sleep earlier than the first hint of the dancing hues.

I had known of the aurora borealis long before I had heard of the Yukon.

After all, it is the setting for my longest-running fantasy, which involves George Clooney and Tiffany & Company.

Back in the real world, however, the cold and the darkness still got to me. It was hard to look at the glass as half full when the ambient temperature alone was enough to convert liquid water to solid ice.

Then I went on a holiday somewhere south and found myself constantly comparing the place to the Yukon. With every “this place is nothing like the Yukon” thought I had on that trip, I knew the territory had finally gotten to me.

All those moments when I weirded myself out with mental justifications of why I should NEVER leave, finally made sense.

Mine has become a familiar story: a newcomer seeking the proverbial greener pasture, ending up spell-bound by the rugged beauty of the literal one.

I

recently re-visited Holland, the country I grew up in.

I have learned over the years, in speaking to fellow ‘Dutches’, that how I experienced things in my childhood - or, for that matter, when I go back to the place I spent my childhood - these are just my experiences, not necessarily something uniquely Dutch.

I can’t claim to be an expert on beer, nor even to have an interest in it, other than to drink the occasional Yukon Gold. So when

my brother took my son, Alexander, to see the Heineken factory in Amsterdam, I opted not to go with them.

Yet, I think you might find the way I experienced beer in Holland at least entertaining.

The fact is that, as far back as 30 years ago when I lived there, and even now when I visit, some things are still the same. So, they must be ingrained in at least part of the population.

Most people’s choice of beer is Heineken, but not to the ex-

tent where one would only drink Heineken. It is just the most obvious brand to buy. And in most garages that I peeked into, invariable there were one or two crates of Heineken.

A crate, very much like our milk crate, has 24 bottles of beer in it. The crate and bottles have a stamp on them, ‘Statiegeld’ (deposit), and the bottles are reusable.

I found people of my hometown are now more inclined to drink a different kind of beer when they

go out for a drink. As well, they will offer more than just Heineken in their homes.

So, there is that. At our farewell gathering, the crate stayed in the garage, but the bottles were brought up and we drank beer on the balcony.

What I experienced again, as I did when I lived in Holland, is that a lot of beer is consumed outdoors, on ‘terrasjes’ (patios at bars or restaurants).

When I lived in The Hague, we sometimes just drank on the

‘stoep’ (sidewalk), a practice looked down upon by the feigned aristocracy that lives there.

On my recent visit, we went to an organic food restaurant in Schipluiden, called Indigo, which serves food grown in its own greenhouse. I recommend it.

The restaurant had two kinds of beer available. As I discovered, this is often the case in restaurants. They have an agreement with beer companies to only sell cont’d on page 25...

My Tripod, Eddie

He may be shy a limb, but don’t tell my boy he’s not an all-Yukon dog

ike many other Yukon dogs, Eddie is of mixed pedigree.

He’s a Heinz 57. Or as some people like to call it, a mutt. But to me, he’s 100 per cent handsome.

Eddie is not really a Yukon dog, but don’t tell him that!

He came north with our family in the summer of 2012.

Back then, he had four legs.

In 2008, my boyfriend (now husband) and I went for a Sunday drive to animal shelter in the town we were living in at the time. These are the things couples do when they are still unmarried and childless.

Eddie was sitting alone in an outdoor kennel, and at first glance I thought he might be a dachshund. He kind of looked like a wiener dog, with his longish face and stumpy legs.

This particular shelter did not have an animal attendant, and since Beary (his original name) was showing all his teeth and a few gums, too, I swallowed hard, closed my eyes and opened the kennel door.

I knew he was about to give me either kisses or a face lift.

Lucky for me, he did not bite, but shyly approached me as I slowly petted his head. He came home that day, on a trial basis, and has been with us ever since.

Sunday drive, indeed.

In the summer of 2012, he and our second dog (an American Stafford-

shire terrier named Chloe) flew from Halifax to Vancouver, and on to Whitehorse the next day.

The dogs had been sedated for the flight, and when we picked them up at cargo they were groggy, but alive. We spent the first night in the swanky Vancouver Airport Fairmont Hotel, which allows dogs for only $375 per night.

The following night, we booked into the Best Western Gold Rush Inn, which was not the Fairmont, but did allow dogs. It was the best night’s sleep I have ever had, even though the karaoke was in full swing just below our room.

The dogs did not even bark once.

In the winter of 2013, we were enjoying a day at Conrad City, on the banks of Windy Arm, just south of Carcross. The dogs had a wonderful time chasing the snowmobile through two-foot deep snow.

Eddie loves the outdoors and his favourite things in life are to chase a ball and be with his people.

He enthusiastically ran behind us and I have a few great photos somewhere on my 2TB hard drive.

Side note: 2TB hard drives are a black hole for photos. Seriously.

Not long after this outing, Eddie developed a limp, which worsened over the next few months. We initially thought it was a torn ligament, or maybe just strain from all that running in the snow.

After a number of tests, needles and X-rays, we were faced with a decision. Do we take him to Vancouver for more tests? Do we

I did some research and found out that many dogs live long, healthy lives with three legs.

So the decision was made. Just over a year ago, the veterinarians at Alpine Veterinary Medical Centre took off his leg and Eddie is now a tripod. His knee joint had a non-cancerous tumour, and he was expected to make a full recovery, which he has.

Eddie now lives life just as he did before, but minus one leg.

He goes snowshoeing with me on

the 10k loop in the dune,s and chases balls with the best of ‘em.

He’s still my boy, my best friend.

The other night I was trimming his toenails, and I said, “OK, Ed, only four more to go.”

When I went to grab his final foot, I laughed out loud when I remembered he didn’t even have a leg there!

The Department of Energy, Mines and Resources invites Yukoners to provide their feedback on proposed amendments to Oil and Gas legislation.

The amendments the Yukon Oil and Gas Act extend the term of a permit, improve the dispute resolution process for the negotiation of benefits agreements, and clarify well abandonment requirements and procedures.

Yukoners are also invited to provide comments on proposed amendments to the Oil and Gas Disposition Regulations that include changes to the rent regime and to the work deposit refund process.

I did travel outside of my own province, Zuid-Holland, and happened to end up in the province of Brabant. My sister and I went into an establishment in the campground where we stayed to have a drink, and I asked about their beer assortment.

Brabant is more akin to Belgium, in that people are more inclined to drink many different kind of beers. Indeed, even in a campground they have a whole assortment, as many as twelve different kinds of beer.

However, they also have a principal beer called Beerze, or Dommelsch pils. It is produced in a local brewery and the name, Beerze, is the name of a little river in the area.

According to my nephews - all within drinking age - you have to show ID when you are under 25 years of age, even if you buy beer in the supermarket. Yes, all supermarkets sell alcohol.

The drinking age in my day was 16; now it is 18. In my good ol’ days, some kids started drinking quite early - around 15 - but I think we could buy it even young-

er; for example, if we were doing errands for our mothers.

I suppose drinking among youngsters in the Westland region still starts around age 16. They first come together in ‘het hok’ (the shed), a place I have not been invited to.

At least one person among a group of friends has such a place in their garage, or some other private place where they gather to drink.

The older ones of the group who are of drinking age go out later in the night, around 11 p.m.

Alexander came back one morning at 6 a.m. Here, he just stays overnight whenever he goes out drinking. In Mendenhall, it is kind of far to take a taxi home.

My nephew told me about an evening of drinking with Alexander. They had lots of fun, which seems to be the universal reason to drink beer.

They started at home, as they were also too old for ‘het hok’, and later visited several bars in Delft, including The Beer Factory.

I liked the description he gave me of that one. Each table has its own tap and you just help yourself. I suppose it is similar to stop-

ping at a self- service gas pump.

Another night, another nephew took him out to go to a dance gathering on an island in Amsterdam. I didn’t know there were islands in Amsterdam, but what do I know? I am not from there and I don’t drink that much.

The evening was all about dancing. It cost money to get in, and the alcohol was included in the price. I don’t know what kind of beer they drank, but I think they told me. I also forget what kind of music was played.

When I looked at the Facebook page of a girl that went with them, the page for that particular day says, “stamp party?” and “ jaaa decade”.

Well, if you know what that means, then you know more than I do.

So, to sum up the beer scene in the Netherlands? Maybe it is all in who you know and where you go.

This can be done before or after gutting. If you plan on keeping the skeleton for stock, I recommend gutting first, just in case you pierce something inside inadvertently.

Begin with removing the ‘backstrap’ by making a cut crossways just behind the skull down to the spine.

Rotate the knife so that it is horizontal and cut along the top of the spine until you reach the fin; allow the blade to follow the bones up and out.

You should have just cut off a nice piece of meat with no bones!

Next, make a cut just behind the left caudal plate from the spine down to the belly, giving your fillet a free leading edge. Looking down from the top, locate the two lines of Y-bones lying parallel to the spine Slide the knife blade down just to the outside of the left row until you feel ribs, then follow the ribs down and cut through the inner lining to free the fillet from the ribs.

Continue this process until you reach the anal fin and the end of the ribs, at which point you can press the knife flat against the fish lying on its side and cut along the side of the spine coming out at the base of the tail.

ike are notorious for being boney.

As a child, I developed an intense fear of choking on fish bones. Not from any horrendous experience, but probably from my

Don’t get me wrong, choking isn’t any fun, but it doesn’t mean all fish should be avoided. I was the only one in the family interested in fishing (my brother and dad wouldn’t even eat the results) and I tended to catch pike most often.

I remember my first fishing trip south of 60, when the other kids all laughed at my massive lures, and I laughed at their tiny trophy trout.

Even up north, though, I still hear pike spoken of with a hint of condescension. The fish you catch when you can’t catch any other.

The voracious eaters who will chase anything.

Well, for every fisher that thumbs his or her nose at the much-maligned jackfish I suppose that means more fish for the rest of us.

Part of the secret of not hating pike is learning how to fillet it so the flesh doesn’t have all of those tiny bones that stick in your craw like a burr in your dog’s coat.

I only learned the technique a couple of years ago, and it has moved pike right up the pecking order to one of my favourite fish, not only to catch, but to eat.

I’ll admit I don’t always love the fiddly filleting, but it’s a package deal.

The trick is understanding a little fish skeletal anatomy. There is the spine, and from that radiates a series of parallel ribs, which differ in number and angle of attachment from species to species.

A small fish like grayling I would never bother to fillet, but simply cook whole and then that spine lifts out of the flesh with all the ribs attached – voilà, no bones.

Try that with a pike (as I have many times) and you get sorely disappointed. This is because pike have a row of ‘floating ribs’ that aren’t actually attached to the spine – the infamous Y-bones.

Fillet outside of these and you end up with lovely firm, white flesh that you don’t have to eat in tiny tiny bites – delicious dredged in flour and spices and fried, dropped in boiling water for ‘poor man’s lobster’, or innumerable other concoctions.

While you end up leaving more flesh on the skeleton, I don’t lose any sleep over this because the whole thing, head and all, goes straight into the stockpot so I don’t feel it is wasted.
