A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Sneeziness O

ne of my crosses to bear is hay fever, an allergic reaction to pollen that emerges in the early-summer and crescendos to the point where I am a runny-nosed, puffy-eyed mess — unable to conduct the most basic of enterprises without dragging a snotted handkerchief across my chafed-red schnoz.

which in-and-of itself is only a mild annoyance but becomes psychologically tormenting due to my inability to scratch that particular body part. But the hay fever symptom that trumps all comers is the itchy eyes. I start to feel them in the corners— those little crevices closest

Sure, they look pretty, but flowers wreak havoc on me in the summer.

Largest Martini Menu in the north.

During a hay fever episode, sneezes, which in moderation can be semi-orgasmic little pleasures, attack mid-sentence in rapid-fire succession and render me unintelligible, moderately epileptic and freakishly amusing. Sometimes these sneezing fits are accompanied by an odd itching sensation in my inner ear,

to the nose where sleep gathers after a night of REM. This is treatable by taking a wetted middle finger and carefully dabbing it against the affected region. But this initial stage is followed by an escalating series of subsequent stages in which the entire eye becomes enflamed with itch. Take your worst mosquito bite

and multiply it by 10. At this point a simple middle finger dabbing is all but useless. Instead, relief must be sought by folding hands into fists and rubbing eyes aggressively in that exaggerated, semi-circular manner made famous by tantruming toddlers. Following an afternoon of such allergy “treatment” reddish-raw rashes engulf my eyes and my bags underneath rudely protrude from my face. Meanwhile, my lids lose almost all their ability to open, allowing me only small, weepy slivers from which to view the world. One question springs to mind: doesn’t a basic drug store carry a variety of medications that deal effectively with the litany of above-mentioned symptoms? Yes. Claritin. Reactine, Allegra. Take your pick, they all work. But there are a few things about me you should know. First, I am disorganized and forgetful to an extent that I often fail to act effectively in my own self-interest. I will zip downtown for the sole purpose of raiding the Shoppers Drug Mart allergy shelf, but after grabbing a coffee and running into a couple of friends I will return home having completely failed in my original mission. Second, I’m enamoured with the idea of the gallant sufferer. One summer 10 years ago, I was in the habit of picking “ditch flowers” for a girl I worked with. I would head to the shoulder of the Alaska Highway and return with a handful of dandelions and fireweed. It was a practice that subjected me to the very pollen that caused my suffering in the first place. But in my (misguided?) mind this self-inflicted distress increased the chivalry of the whole endeavour. To this day the recipient of the ditch flowers still does a killer impression of me handing her a bouquet in the midst of a sneezing fit. My hay fever may not be appetizing, but at least it leaves an impression that lasts a decade.

Robert Sr. arrived in 1965 on a mission to ascend Mount Kennedy. The Canadian government named the peak in Kluane National Park after John F. Kennedy, following his assassination in 1963. At that time no one had reached the summit, and Robert Sr. wanted to be the first. Robert Sr. was a regular senator, unskilled in the ways of mountaineering. A Klondike Kornerof an Arctic Rescue The Challenges

Yukon flying legend Andy Cruikshank’s granddaughter tells the story of the famous MacAlpine rescue by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail

I

Andy Cruikshank had jotted notes each day during the search and planned to write the story for posterity, but died in a plane crash – the first fatal one in the NWT – in 1932. Instead, his granddaughter used excerpts of his diary and Pearce’s, together with archival research and other published sources, to create a lively retelling of events. Historians and amateur enthusiasts alike will appreciate Karram’s descriptions of what the men ate, wore, and how they preserved their food. The author’s background in psychology makes her particularly attuned to the men’s battle with morale: these men are not superheroes, they’re not impervious to despair and disagreements. She shows their humanity, and how a “slug of Scotch,” PHOTO: courtesy of Kerry Karram a cigarette, or piece of chocolate kept them from going over the brink. North Vancouver author Kerry Karram notes that it was, howKarram tells the story of a ever, the Copper Inuit who really rescue mission to the Arctic saved the MacAlpine Party’s lives. n 1929, the largest aerial search and rescue operation in our country’s history gripped Canadians for months. That August, a group of eight prospectors led by C.D.H. MacAlpine flew into Canada’s Barren Lands in the Northwest Territories in search of mineral riches. Instead, they found themselves trapped in an unforgiving landscape without proper equipment or training. Their rescuers, led by Yukon flying legend Andy Cruikshank, also encountered incredible challenges as they battled bad weather, forced landings, and crashes. Cruikshank and his wife Esmé had set up Yukon Airways and Exploration Company, the first scheduled air service between Whitehorse and Dawson on wheels, two years earlier. In 1929 he was a captain at Western Canada Airways and considered one of the best pilots in the North. Kerry Karram brings both sides of the MacAlpine story to life in Four Degrees Celsius: A Story of Arctic Peril. The seeds for the book were sown when Karram, who lives in North Vancouver, B.C., attended the 2007 Midnight Sun Float Plane Fly-In in Yellowknife for the unveiling of a monument to Andy Cruikshank, the grandfather she never knew. RCMP honours officers killed in 1963 Carmacks plane crash by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail

t’s been 50 years since the worst RCMP plane crash in Yukon history. On July 13, 1963 at 8:10 p.m. a DHC-2 Beaver (CF-MPO) on floats crashed in Carmacks, killing four on-duty RCMP officers — Sgt. Morley Laughland, Cp. Robert Asbil, Const. William Annand and Const. Laurence Malcolm — and a prisoner, 56-year-old Joseph Philippe Clement Desormeaux, who had just appeared as a trial witness in Mayo. On that clear, warm summer evening, the plane was returning to Whitehorse from Mayo when Sgt. Laughland, a skilled pilot, tried to land on the Yukon River at Carmacks. Witnesses reported the Beaver was making a second circle when it rolled over and spun into the ground. It struck the riverbank below the Mayo road and burst into flames. All on board died instantly.

Chuck E. Ford told the Whitehorse Star that the Carmacks basin had unusual wind conditions that could have caused the crash. The inquest jury agreed and recommended the Department of Transport (DOT) install a windsock. “The RCMP and DOT did not find any mechanical problem,” says Helmer Hermanson, president of the Yukon RCMP Veterans Association and a pilot himself. “Speculation was that it may have been some type of a downdraft or a stall. The Beaver’s a pretty forgiv-

For several months, the committee planned the memorial service held on July 13, 2013, which included a piper, RCMP march, and speeches by local elders and dignitaries at the accident site. “There has been a marker at the site since November 1963,” Hermanson says, “and a cairn in Carmacks since 1966.” In November 1963, a bronze plaque was also installed at the base of the RCMP flagpole in Whitehorse. weather while Sgt. Laughland’s widow, Denise, unveiled the memorial. Fifty years later, the Laughlands’ daughter and son-in-law attended the anniversary service. The committee worked hard to locate family members of the officers. The men had all been in their twenties and thirties, and three of them left behind young families.

“It’s been gratifying to see the response from people across the country,” says Hermanson. “All these former RCMP officers and Yukoners putting their investigator hats on. In the end, we found a direct family member — daughter, son, brother — from each family to be there. “This was a good opportunity for the force and the Veterans Association to pay tribute. You don’t want to forget about them. This is part of our history and part of our life.”

Viola Mullett was a young girl when the RCMP Beaver floatplane crashed at Carmacks in 1963. During a moving ceremony she recounted her memories of seeing the accident from across the Carmacks River.

Maintaining Eligibility for Publicly Funded Yukon Health Care

Maintien de l’admissibilité au régime public d’assurance-santé du Yukon

It is important that Yukoners have fair access to publicly-funded health care coverage. And as our health care costs grow, it is essential we spend our collective health care dollars wisely.

Il est important que les Yukonnais aient un accès équitable au régime public d’assurance-santé du Yukon. Les frais liés aux soins de santé ne cessent d’augmenter et il est par conséquent essentiel de planifier judicieusement les dépenses publiques en soins de santé.

The Yukon government is reviewing health care insurance laws and would like to hear what you have to say about the future of our health care. You need to have lived in Yukon for three months to be eligible for health care coverage. This requirement is standard across Canada and will not change. What we are looking to clarify are the requirements for coverage while Yukoners are away from the territory. A short survey is being circulated to mail boxes throughout Yukon, but you can also provide your input online at www.hss.gov.yk.ca/hcinsurancesurvey.php. As part of the survey, you will find an overview of how other jurisdictions deal with maintaining eligibility for publicly-funded health care and a list of frequently asked questions to provide you with more information. Please share your thoughts about a subject that is important to all of us. For more information, or to fill out the survey, please go to www.hss.gov.yk.ca/hcinsurancesurvey.php by August 30.

hile returning from Skagway I saw two black bears in the bush having lunch on some plants. They were enjoying themselves until my dogs, which were in the van with me, got a whiff of them and started barking. Once they heard the noise, the bears headed into the forest. This photo was taken with a Canon 7D with Canon 200 mm Lens at 1/125 at F8, ISO 160.

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Exploring Hän Culture

The Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre offers exhibits and seminars that connect everyday life to nature

T

he striking Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre was controversial when it was first being built in Dawson City — it’s not exactly a gold rush themed building. But it was Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in themed, and it’s now thoroughly embedded in the Dawson waterfront scene. With its stadium seating theatre, Hammerstone Gallery, Gathering Room and gift shop, the centre is a place that every visitor ought to visit. Each summer the Gathering Room is home to a new display. This summer the display is called Trees of Life, and is based on spruce (ts’òk) and birch (hät’or) trees. Pairs of large poles dominate the room. A banner display is fastened between each pair of trees, explaining the things that can be extracted from or made from the

trees, including medicines, boats, snowshoes, shelters, fishing tools, pots, baskets and instruments for ritual practices. Inset into niches in the large poles are a variety of items: wooden dolls, simple toys, and hunting tools such as a moose caller. Decorating the walls of the room are fishing spears, boards for stretching skins, a canoe, a bent-wood chair, a variety of ritual tools, snowshoes of various types and sizes, and bow-and-arrow sets. In keeping with the display, the centre offers themed talks and demonstrations by Fran MorburgGreen. “Of Land and Sky” explores the journey of the shaman, presented with a selection of wild crafted teas, berry juices and jams. “Wild and Rosie Apothecary” deals with more medicinal subjects: salves, hydrasols, balms, bath salts,

steams and soaks. The Hammerstone Gallery contains displays that tell the story of the Hän people from the earliest days through to the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Final Land Claim Agreement. In the theatre you can view several videos that feature spectacular scenery and tell the story of the people and the land. Also in the theatre, contemporary dancer Michelle Olson will be presenting “Frost Exploding Trees Moon” three days a week. According to RavenSpiritDance. com, “this solo dance piece follows the journey of a woman traveling along her trap line. She finds a place to set up camp, builds her temporary home, and settles into the centre of her world.” Reaching out beyond the cultural centre, staff will be part-

This will also be broadcast via the web at www.cfyt.ca. You can take a short video tour of Dänojà Zho on YouTube.com – search for “Dawson Before the

Everything Old is Beautiful Again by Glenda Koh

S

tuff’s got to be old to make it worthwhile for Tara Hale to hit the pavement bright and early every weekend. Hale and her sister Sandy Schmidt have a standing Saturday morning garage sale date from May to August — no friends, no kids, go light and go fast. They’re particular about what they’re looking for, though. “Old stuff, vintage stuff, stuff for my garden,” Hale says. “I wouldn’t wake up at 8 o’clock to buy new stuff.” The sisters have finetuned their routine for maximum efficiency. They get the paper the night before and highlight the sales they’re interested in. They spurn Internet listings because many older people advertise only in the newspapers. “We’re a little snobby about where we go — we do Riverdale, Porter Creek, the older neighbourhoods because there are more old people and they have the stuff we like.” They only go to the ones they’ve highlighted, although they’ve been known to do the dreaded drive by — cruising slowly past a sale to do a quick visual scan before either stopping or driving on. It’s an practice that can destroy a garage sale holder’s self-esteem. Once at a sale, they do a quick once over, then split up. This strategy allows them to get through many yards, spending only about 5 minutes at each, unless it’s really good. For Hale and Schmidt estate sales and church sales are especially rich. “That’s where the old stuff is,” Hale says. “They just have boxes of things. They don’t unpack anything, they don’t price anything, you just take a box and take it to the guy and he’ll say five bucks and you’ll take the whole thing.” What makes a bad garage sale? Hale’s two pet peeves are half-burned candles and free plastic pots that plants come in. “Our joke is that if we ever see a table of planter pots and burned candles, we’re going to flip the table right over,” Hale says. “You can’t sell a pre-burned candle. You should give that stuff away.”

Unlike many, Hale doesn’t tend to haggle. She’s willing to pay the sticker price, or just put it back on the table. “If it’s old people, my sister and I are funny,” she says. “We lost our mom about five years ago, so it seems like every little old lady who we see selling stuff is like our mom, so we want to talk to her and we end up paying like double what she’s asking for because we just think, ‘This is her stuff.’” Not only that, she loves the people she meets so much, she can end up buying things she might not need. “There was a lady in Riverdale who had two garage sales two years in a row because she had to downsize to move into a home,” Hale says. “Her kids didn’t want any of her stuff. My sister and I — my god, we bought so much stuff. I have a bag of jewellery downstairs because I thought this can’t go to just anyone. It’s funny how you just take on the story of the people of the things you buy.” Her big find this season is a huge sign that says, “Thank you. Please call again” which is now mounted on the outside of her house, just above one of Hale’s charming perennial beds. “The man I bought it from said they used to put it out at the end of their driveway so that people would see it as they drove home from parties.” Hale uses many of her purchases in her garden, but being a crafter, a florist, and an events planner under the company name the Wishfactory, she often incorporates her treasures into her work. Her crafts are fibre-based works that use floral and garden motifs and can be checked out on Facebook. “If I’m using something in an art piece I love the juxtaposition of old rusty stuff with the bright felts, fabrics and sequins.” Garage sales require commitment, but for Hale, the objects of the past are PHOTO: Rick Massie worth the hunt. “The quality is always better,” she says. “They weren’t mass proWhitehorse residents Sandy Schmidt, left, and Tara Hale have a standing Saturday morning garage sale duced and the styles of the 50s date. Hale incorporates her finds into gifts she creates through her company, Wishfactory. and 60s were always so kooky.” Glenda Koh hopes someone will buy her stuff someday.

Need a hint... This artifact travelled across the vast landscape of the Yukon Territory. It was designed to carry and protect significant items. The exterior, made from brown leather, hides a luxurious interior of royal purple silk and velvet signifying the importance of the items inside. This artifact and its precious cargo were integral to the mission of the person trekking through the frozen north. On the outside, a stamp reads: F. Reid Maker Gayndah. The object is nineteen centimetres high and fourteen centimetres in diameter. What is it?

helpful to let your tomatoes dry out a little once they have fruited. This is counter-intuitive because tomatoes need a lot of water to first establish the fruit, but roots that reach deep into the soil for water create stronger fruit with fuller flavour. Tomatoes, like grapes, pick up flavour from the terroir (“sense of place”). If you find your tomatoes have yellow leaves, you are killing the plant by over-watering. Overwatering also encourages pests. To reduce pests and encourage growth, consider planting helper plants beside one another. Good companion plants for tomatoes are basil, onions, leeks and chives. Borage will repel tomato hornworm and marigold will encourage growth. Some tomato varieties are more likely Illustration: Aimée Dawn Robinson to produce fruit in short-season climes. It’s also helpful to harvest toa heavy rainfall and weak roots produce weak fruit. In fact, it’s matoes prematurely and ripen them indoors in paper bags, allowing newer fruit ripen on the vine — saving the extra delicious vine-ripened fruit for your final harvest. Serve tomatoes in wooden or ceramic bowls because metal will react with the fruit and increase acid content. Until Christopher Columbus reintroduced tomatoes to Europe as edibles, this member of the nightshade family — which also includes include tobacco, peppers, potato, and eggplant — were considered poisonous, and were grown only as ornamentals. At the time, wealthy Europeans ate from plates made of lead and other metals. Hence, near-toxic glass bottles - cans acid levels in the produce could have started the rumour that to- and we have a plastic matoes were poisonous.

y grandfather’s backyard was a gardener’s dream. Flat as a postage stamp, with deep, rich soil and daylong exposure to intense southwestern Ontario sunshine. My grandfather, a gentleman and tobacco farmer, had an incredibly green thumb. Among his harvests were tons of heavenly tomatoes. The tomatoes were never mealy or white-fleshed, but deep red all the way through. They were also heavy, juicy, sliceable and nottoo-acidic. They had a slight orange bloom on the skin from ripening on the vine. A childhood of perfect tomatoes spoiled me for life; it is difficult to grow perfect tomatoes in most of Canada. But Northern gardeners are an optimistic bunch, and growing such tomatoes isn’t impossible, it just takes experimentation, planning and work. If you keep in mind that the tomato plant is native to the warm climes of Mexico and South America, you will be less disappointed when your tomato plants don’t produce bushels of fruit – and you will be more likely to artificially reproduce the hot, sunny environment that tomato plants crave. Planting tomatoes in containers is helpful, because you can move them to sunny and hot locations. Planting tomatoes directly in the ground is less likely to produce high yields, unless you have used ground warming techniques and devices throughout the early spring and summer. It’s easier to grow tomato plants in greenhouses, conservatories, containers, and raised beds. Surround the plants with

Your perfect day is waiting for you in Carcross. Hands down the most photographed Yukon community, Carcross was originally called Caribou Crossing after the herd of caribou that swam the narrows between Bennett and Nares lakes. At the turn of the last century, these same lakeshores hosted thousands of gold seekers on their way to the Klondike. Carcross is a mecca for hikers, bikers, birders and photographers. Only a 45-minute drive south of Whitehorse, we invite you to come and play for the day.
