n March 12, 2013 much of the world sat riveted as a papal conclave was convened in Vatican City. Two weeks previously, Benedict XVI announced his resignation as leader of the Catholic Church; it was time for the Sacred College of Cardinals (very tough admission standards) to elect a new Pope.

The conclave was first established in 1274 under the reign of Gregory X, and its ancient rituals have remained mostly intact since.

The cardinals arrive at the Sistine Chapel and are put up in hastily arranged dorm rooms. Each man is given a cell with a small bed, a small table and a small basin to wash themselves with. The barebones arrangements are designed to discourage dilly-dallying in the process of electing God’s new representative on earth.

Once the electoral process begins, cardinals gather to vote twice a day — once in the morning and once in the afternoon — and voting continues until a majority of two-thirds throws its support behind one person.

If the required two-thirds is not reached in a given round, the secret ballots are collected and burned together with wet straw, causing a dark stream of smoke to rise from the chimney, indicating that a new leader has yet to be chosen. If, however, the cardinals achieve the mandated standard of agreement, the ballots are burned with dry straw, and a puff of white smoke emerges from the chapel.

In the last few conclaves, a chemical has been added to the fire to decrease ambiguity in the colour of the smoke — a mild concession to the modern world.

Regardless, the appearance of white smoke causes pandemonium outside, as journalists and Catholic devotees alike spring into action — either praying and weeping or phoning their editors and filing stories. In rare cases, perhaps both.

On March 13, 2013 at approximately 7 p.m. local time the white smoke rose. It was official, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina had been selected Pope. He took the name Francis.

The tradition of different coloured smoke representing different results is my favourite part of the whole process. In an era of 140-character tweets and nasty Internet trollers it is downright remarkable that such an ancient medium of communication still has the power to instill awe and exaltation in so many. Marshall McLuhan, himself a Catholic, would be proud.

In fact, I would humbly encourage the Church to use this powerful ritual more often.

Two Auctions Feature Art With Heart

Yukon Artists @ Work and Rotary Club hosting show and sales

here are two opportunities coming up to socialize and pick up some art at bargain prices.

Both are fundraisers, both are in Whitehorse and both feature art with heart.

The first is the Yukon Artists @ Work’s silent auction on April 5 and 6. The second is the Rendezvous Rotary Club’s Experienced Art Auction, taking place on Friday, April 12.

Yukon Artists @ Work The co-operative of approximately 35 artists have been in their studios creating new pieces of art for their silent auction and the group show taking place through the month.

The whole extravaganza is called An English Garden P’Arty and Group Show and kicks off on the Friday with an opening reception and the first showing of the silent auction items. The next day, the event ramps up with English high tea for civilized socializing and art browsing.

Daphne Mennell, spokesperson for the event, says the silent auction will feature objects that are useful in a garden; things like planters, birdbaths, birdhouses and sculptures. The group show will include paintings, ceramics, glasswork and fabric art.

“The inspiration… is the returning light and most people at this time are thinking about their gardens and spring and green and having fun outside — and that’s the idea behind the Garden P’Arty,” Mennell says. “I don’t know how close we’ll get to an English Garden, but with all the paintings and auction items and some plants around, it’ll help to deceive you into thinking something like that.”

6, and ends with the closing of the silent auction at 4 p.m. The group show runs until May 3.

Experienced Art Auction The Old Fire Hall will be filled with pieces of art representing the tastes of decades past — showcasing the timelessness of creativity.

The Rendezvous Rotary Club is hosting their third Experienced Art Auction on April 12, which draws together artwork from the past and people with an appetite for economical treasure.

The club’s previous auctions, in 2008 and 2011, were good parties and a good way to raise money for charity. There’s also a solid demand for recycled art.

Club President Lois Craig says people dig into their collections of art for pieces they want to unload as a charitable donation and drop off up to five pieces by Saturday, April 6.

The artwork’s original price should be at least $50.

When a given piece sells, the owner will receive 50 per cent of

the selling price and a tax receipt for the other 50 per cent.

The Experienced Art Auction is a fundraiser for ShelterBox International Disaster Relief and Habitat for Humanity Yukon, and the art owner has the option of donating the whole selling price to the Rendezvous Rotary Club, which will then split the sale between the two charities.

“I suspect there will be other well-known Yukon artists’ work in the auction to come,” Craig says.

“We’ve had some prints come in that were done from etchings from one of Captain Cook’s trips to the Antarctic in the 1700s — they were done by someone in his crew. So there’s Yukon art, art from across Canada and different parts of the world.”

In previous years, artwork has sold for between $10 and $1,000, with a live auction increasing the excitement of bargain shopping.

“Sometimes it’s people looking for a good deal; some people are looking for something a bit different; some people are just curious and others who want to socialize,” Craig says.

The Rendezvous Rotary Club’s Experienced Art Auction takes place on Friday, April 12, starting at 5 p.m. at The Old Fire Hall.

Dawson City Museum provides another season of togetherness-movie-watching

ovie season has ended at the Dawson City Museum for another year. The last show was Lincoln, which played to reasonably sized audiences in late March.

The Museum began its movie night program a few years ago, beginning with classic films in the audio-visual room. But the arrival of Turner Classic Movies on the city’s TV cable system reduced its appeal, especially as more and more homes converted to larger flat screen televisions and better sound systems.

So in 2010 the museum worked out a deal which allows it to show popular films from new DVD releases, just before they go on rental in the local video store.

There hasn’t been a theatre in Dawson since the Orpheum was water damaged beyond salvation in the 1979 flood. The fellow who used to operate the Starlight Theatre in Faro toyed with the idea of expanding to Dawson back in the 1990s, when Brewery Creek was booming and the mine at Faro was

still in production. However, both those operations ended and that idea faded with them.

Sure, there are lots of videos for rent at Jimmy’s Place, but watching them at home isn’t the same experience as going out and sitting in front of a larger screen with a bunch of other people who want to see the same movie.

The museum’s theatre room, which is used for museum-related material in the summer, used to be a little hard on the bottom, but a few years back Holland-America decided to make it softer for its clients and donated some nice comfortable chairs. It’s not stadium seating, but it’s way better than the old benches with cushions.

Local businesses and the museum board both supported the project, which also brings in a bit of money for the museum. Sponsors include the Eldorado Hotel, A Ray of Sunshine Variety Store, Dawson Home Hardware, Jimmy’s Place, Bonanza Market and Aurora Office.

This season started in October and featured kids’ matinees on Saturday and Sunday afternoons along with more adult fare in the evenings. A sampling of the films includes Hotel Transylvania, The Amazing Spiderman, Frankenweenie, Anna Karenina, Rise of the Guardians, Enduring Love, Wreck It Ralph, Life of Pi, Hitchcock, Argo and The Hobbit.

Museum members get in for $5 and enjoy an evening out with some popcorn, pop and a candy bar.

Daylight’s back now, so we don’t need movie nights as much as we did in the dark days, but they will be welcome again next winter.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Identity Theft

Part 1: Signs that your identity has been stolen was in the past.

Past cases have ranged from obtaining credit cards in someone else’s name to selling a house while the owner is out of town.

Luckily, there are signs that indicate you may have had your identity stolen.

Consider your mail. Have you stopped receiving bank or credit card statements? This could mean that either your mail is being stolen to prevent you from noticing additional charges or identity thieves have used your account to change the mailing address so you no longer see your statements.

Strange transactions may reflect unauthorized charges or fees for other cards and services you did not order, and may have resulted from the opening of new accounts in your name.

Also, extra mail may be a problem. This could include customer discount notices for products or

credit cards you do not own. These serve as a warning that someone may have purchased something or applied for a credit card in your name.

Another warning sign is a change in your interest rate. If your rate increases substantially, this could that one or more unsecured credit card accounts have been opened in your name. Since your rate is related to the risk of your credit card limits, large increases may indicate that you have more cards in your name than you actually own.

If you apply for a loan from the bank or go to renew your mortgage and the loan is turned down or the interest rate offered is higher than you expected, it could indicate that you are carrying too much debt, debt you may not have actually incurred.

It is a serious sign if you cannot access your bank account funds.

Identity theft Your account may have been locked by your bank due to excessive unauthorized activity on your account or non-payment of bills you may not even be aware of.

Another thing to watch for is calls from collection agencies.

While you may feel these are in error or crank calls, it may indicate that someone else has stolen your identity and their accounts are overdue.

statistical trend that receives little appreciation is that crime rates in Canada have been declining steadily for more than 20 years. There are exceptions, however.

Identity theft has become more prevalent. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, there were just over 17,000 victims in 2012, with losses of about $16-million.

I’m going to write about this type of crime over the next two columns. The first will be on how to recognize if your identity has been stolen. In the next column we’ll consider ways to reduce your potential for being a victim.

Identity theft occurs when someone gains enough information about you to impersonate you and obtain credit or make purchases in your name. The impersonal nature of computer data makes this far easier to do than it

Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

Berliner Weisse: The Champagne of the Spree

M

y colleague, Don Murphy, recently visited Germany and before he left, I sweet-talked him into bringing me back a special beer. Several weeks and 18,000 kilometres later, he appeared in my office with the booty: a squat bottle of Berliner Weisse.

I had read about this beer but never tasted it. Known as the Champagne of the Spree, it is a low alcohol (3 per cent alcohol by volume) wheat beer with a sour twang from lactic acid (the same acid that gives yogurt its tartness). It is dry and effervescent like a champagne; the Spree part of its moniker refers to a river that runs through Berlin.

At one time, there were hundreds of brewers making Berliner Weisse. It was the most popular beer style in Berlin in the 19th century. These days, most Germans think it’s just a fizzy, lowalcohol drink for the university

crowd with their rap music and thumb-talking. The label of the beer even depicts the face of a young boy emerging from a beer stein. You’d never see this sort of image on a North American beer label.

The traditional way to drink the beer is in a wide-mouthed, stemmed glass with a straw and a shot of sweet syrup: raspberry, woodruff or, less commonly, lemon. I had to look up woodruff on the internet, so I didn’t hold out much hope of finding such syrup.

I looked for raspberry and lemon instead. After a few dead ends I found myself contemplating a can of frozen Minute Maid lemonade.

Warmed up, it is sort of a syrup.

After a gruelling snowshoe hike up Grey Mountain, I rewarded myself with the Berliner Weisse.

It pours a golden-straw colour with a fine head that quickly subsides. The beer tastes like a very dry apple cider — tart, but not

puckering. I’m no fashionista, but I figure sour is the new black in the beer world. The last decade of hop domination is giving way to sourness.

Adding my lemon “syrup”, it transformed into a slightly sweet, very refreshing lemony cider. Personally, I like the beer better with the syrup because of the intermittent grassy notes that I found distracting. With the syrup, it has a shandy-like quality — a perfect summer lawnmower beer.

Berliner Weisse — add a little lemonade concentrate to abide by the European way of drinking this beer.

On the back of the bottle the brewery even advertises the syrups you can purchase (in Germany) to add to the beer. Apparently, you will get strange looks from Berliners if you order the beer ohne shuss, without the shot of syrup.

Chances are you won’t find this elusive beer in stores, but look out for other sour beers like Flanders Red Ale, Gueuze and lambic. And when drinking them, it helps if you don’t think of them as beer but, rather, as something completely different to awaken your palate while still giving you a pleasant beer buzz.

he Cross Country Nationals are in Whistler, B.C. this year along with the Downhill, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Biathlon, and Para-Nordic Nationals.

To cap things off, it’s Easter weekend in one of the most popular ski resorts in the world. It’s a busy place to say the least.

More known for downhill than cross country, Whistler is a skier’s paradise — weather permitting.

Powder days get even the laziest of downhillers up early in the morning. However, I have my fingers crossed we won’t get a powder day. Knee-deep snow is fine and dandy if you’re cruising down a mountain on fat skis, not so for racing the trails on our toothpicks.

So far, so good.

Racing started under clear blue skies on Saturday, March 23 with the team sprints. Two partners team up and race alternately around a short course, tagging off between each of the three laps they are both required to complete.

The Yukon not only put two out of three teams into the finals, but it filled two spots on the podium.

David Greer and I placed second while Colin Abbott and Graham Nishikawa placed third. I couldn’t think of a better way to start off the championships.

The racing continued the next day with a 10 km skate. A hardy bowl of oats for breakfast and I was feeling top-of-the-day. It was an interval race, meaning racers started half-a-minute apart.

Sometimes it’s hard to know how your race is going without seeing other racers around you.

Coaches scramble to give us splits (intermediate results) throughout the race.

“You’re in 5th place, 10 seconds from the lead,” a coach yells.

You can never be sure whether that means 5th place out of the

racers ahead of you, 5th place on the previous lap, 5th place in your category, 5th place over all, or if your coach completely made it up to motivate you.

Ultimately you don’t know until everyone is finished and the results are calculated. However, when I caught racers starting 30 seconds and a minute in front of me I knew I was having a good day.

With two good races checked off the trip, I’m looking forward to the rest of the week.

On the days that I’m not killing myself on the trails I’m having fun making a mess in the kitchen, playing ping-pong, photographing birds and relaxing in our hot tub.

Information from communities near Kluane Lake and from moose surveys conducted by Environment Yukon, Kluane First Nation and Parks Canada suggests that numbers of hunted moose are higher than the population can sustain. Action is required.

A Yukon Senior Remembers the Art Community circa 1960’s Or how we almost got a painting lesson from A.Y. Jackson

I did this oil painting, called “Road to Moccasin Flats,” in 1966 from my front trailer window on 4th Avenue and Baxter. Sgt. Ron MacLean Senior bought it that year and it is still part of his collection.

I

suppose no current young artist could relate to the rather amateurish Whitehorse arts community way back in the ‘60s.

Our little Whitehorse Sketch Club gathered weekly in Diana and Ken Mulloy’s basement on Black Street (they still live there). We usually brought our oil or watercolours to the meeting after working on a piece at home while the kids slept.

This was a wonderful way to socialize and to meet other artists. I wish we still had the same opportunity to meet together and enjoy new work.

There were no galleries available, but we did enter the main art show of the year during Yukon

Sourdough Rendezvous. We managed to sell quite a few paintings, mainly to arriving and departing Canadian Forces stationed here.

When Dr. Maurice Haycock, a government mineralogist, who had extensively travelled all over the North, came to Whitehorse in 1965 someone asked him to visit our art group. He and A.Y. Jackson, a member of the Group of Seven, had a stunning sold out show at the little library on Wood Street the previous year.

Haycock was a “Sunday painter” until a chance meeting with A.Y. Jackson changed him into a fine painter through Jackson’s generous companionship on numerous Arctic painting trips. Jack-

We lined up our pictures in anticipation of Dr. Haycock’s visit.

One from our group, Barbara Wilson, a landscape artist who was more advanced than the rest of us, had just completed a large oil of the mountains of the Skagway Road.

Quick and efficient, Haycock had hardly come down the steps when he remarked that her painting of the mountains looked like toothpaste. Wilson took the criticism and turned into a notable outdoor landscape artist; her

painting “Shipyard Squatters” can be viewed in the Whitehorse United Church office. After the Wilsons moved to Lethbridge, Alberta she achieved admittance to the Alberta Society of Artists.

We pushed Haycock to take us out on a sketching trip the next afternoon. He agreed to meet us up on a bank across the river from the boat yard. He gave us an unforgettable demonstration. He had a lap paint box of Jackson’s design holding an 11x14 birch panel and about six oil colours.

He was very aware of what to leave out of the painting and immediately drew in, with dark brown paint, the outline of design, the shadows and the rhyth-

mic patterns of the ice in the foreground.

He used one brush, no turps, but cleaned the brush on an old pulp novel. He encouraged us to appreciate the wonderful “homely” subjects that were fast disappearing.

As a result, many of us set out to sketch and paint the riverboats, shacks and our ruggedly beautiful landscape.

Most of us left some reasonable paintings that may be worthy of future collections.

Y

ukon Gold is a new reality show filmed around Dawson City during last year’s mining season. The series, which follows four mining crews in their search for pay dirt, premiered earlier this month.

In that first episode, Al McGregor, or ‘Big Al’ as he’s known in the show, battles equipment failure with his excavator, Bernie Kreft tries to teach his young sons how to mine, while Ken Foy and Guillaume Brodeur experience problems with their sluice machine. But by the end of the episode one of the teams is $250,000 richer.

Yukon Gold airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on the History Channel and will also air on the National Geographic Channel next year.

Foy, who has been mining on and off the past 20 years, said this past season was the toughest he’s faced in his career.

“Some things were positive but

on other fronts it was a summer we wanted to forget,” he says.

For Foy, the most important factor in agreeing to be part of the show was that episodes reflected an accurate depiction of the job, without staged action or drama.

“Not once did they ask us to re-shoot anything,” he says. “Really, the worst thing anyone could say is that we’re acting.”

Born in Saskatchewan, Foy started coming up to the Yukon in 1988 at age 14. His father worked with Stuart Schmidt Mining and Foy joined in, working alongside his dad for 10 years.

Now, Big Al works

on the same land Foy once mined with his dad.

Foy left the mining sector for two seasons in the early 2000’s and headed south, to Hawaii, where he ran a construction company. Business was good until the market crashed and his company went down with it.

He returned to the Yukon and now calls Beaver Creek home during the season. He’s planning to stay at least another 10 years and has set his goals high for future seasons.

“The show isn’t a contest,” he says. “We can’t sit on our gold, we’ve got to sell it every week to pay for expenses and keep the company going. So the show documents our struggles and the realities of the business.

It’s good work to film because each year is different, with different miners, mining in different areas. Each year brings something new.”

says reaction has been positive.

“Everyone’s been excited about it, but most people are feeling sorry for me,” he says, laughing.

“They see the conditions we work in, each day, no matter what, and the challenges we face.”

Foy admits he wasn’t too keen on the idea at the start. The production company, Vancouverbased Paperny Entertainment, reached out to Foy and he says it took six emails before he read one. His mining partner, Guillaume Brodeur was into it from the start, as was Stuart Schmidt. Eventually Foy was convinced.

“I honestly thought their heart was in the right place,” he says.

“We made it clear that the mining comes first. Even my friends and family don’t really know how much work goes into it, so for me to get the story out seemed so appealing.”

Food for Thought From My Wanderlust

I

n the autumn of 1971 I found myself, on my yearning to travel (Wanderlust), in Munchen, Bavaria, Germany. I was nearly broke and in need of a job. I was lucky enough that this was the year before the Olympics, which was to take place in this city, so they were crying for arbeiters (workers).

So, I climbed onto the gastarbeiter (guest worker) bus and soon found work with an older German fellow by the name of Lars. Once he signed the paper work that he was in need of a helper, the process for a work visa went through with no hitches. So began my path as a brick/ stone mason’s helper.

And what a path this was. The life and learning experience taught by this wise, hard-working Meister Crafter (master crafter) left me with a lasting impression of Deutschland. Their food and beverages were two of these timely stamps that will forever be imprinted in my mind.

I could give you the traditional yummy German dishes of sauerkraut on sausages served with schupfnudeln (potato noodles) or Bavarian potato dumplings; or jaguar schnitzel (tenderized pork steaks with spices and bread crumb coating) complemented with potatoes and gravy; or a brisket meat slow-cooked in sauerkraut and tomatoes with blaukrot (blue cabbage) or spatzle (pasta noodles). This would be served with a nice bottle of one of the many varieties of Rhineland wine.

Instead, I will give you my favourite simple recipe which I gladly ate every day and loved because it was always different.

You see, every day my mentor, Lars, would buy a 24-pack of beer for himself and a 12-pack for me (later a 24, when he hired two other gents: an Italian mason and a Yugoslav grunt, like me. Ha!) Along with the bier beverages, he purchased daily from different shops along the way to work various types of bread, sausages and cheeses for the upcoming 12-hour shift. Every once in a while he would throw in a head of lettuce or a jar of sauerkraut and some fresh fruit.

Oh, by the way Lars who was definitely in his 70s could out drink me by far and out work me too. Although, this then 22-year-old did all the heavy lifting, packing and cement mixing for this elderly craftsman.

So here is my Food to Fly For, back to memory lane: Brot (bread), or Ruudtuk (rolls); Kase (cheese); Bavarian pumpernickel, which is a rich dark and heavy rye brot and by the way, pumper means flatulance or gas. Ha! Michbrot or Graubrot (various rye brots from dark to light); Volkornbrot (a fantastic mixture of rye and other grains);

Bauernbrot (bauer means farmer, an authentic German sourdough bread); Gouda (strong, something like old cheddar); Limberger/Backsteiner (yellow, strong and spicy flavour); Alp Kase (cheese for the mountain person); BierKase/Wiesslacker Bavarian (bold and tangy and white in colour, thus weiss); HandKees (mildly spicey with strong aroma); Steinbushcher (mild and tangy, sounds like a beer...Ha!); Tilister (or what we call Havarti).

These are just a few of my favourites of the more than 400 different varieties of cheeses produced in the Bavarian and Alpine region of Germany. Germany is the largest cheese producing country in Europe (followed closely by France, Italy and the Netherlands).

Wurst (sausage, cold cuts) AAAhhhh! Wunderbar!

Bratwurst (a dark, spicy mixed blood and meat sausage); Thuringer (a spicy version of pork and beef); Bierwurst (as the name suggests, beer sausage); Gelbwurst (pork and veal mixed sausage); Jadgwurst (hunters or Bavarian bologna); Alpinewurst (mountain cuts to go with Alp kase); Bierschinken (bierwurst with ham morsels tucked within); Salami (various kinds); Thueringer/Mettwurst (a summer type sausage); Presskopf (head cheese); and Aufschnitt (a mixed lunch meat).

Bier (beer) Pilsner (my favourite; bold with hop flavour); Boch (a bit malty/darker); and Weiss (mixed beers with a bit of a sweeter taste).

I would love to go back to Munchen and reminisce with these bon appetites and thoughts of my old friend, Lars, who is now long gone, back to the Bavarian forest and lakes from whence he came.

As Beethoven so aptly said: “Mass en sein? Es mus sein!” (Must it be?

It must be!) and the Beatles later sang in Frankfurt: Let it be.

ospice Yukon is hosting a Quiet Day Retreat, a day of remembering loved ones through writing, painting, collage or simple reflection.

On Sunday, April 7 participants are provided with space to reflect in their own way and at their own pace, says co-facilitator Brandon Murdoch, a volunteer with Hospice Yukon in Whitehorse.

Murdoch, who has always used art as a way to process her own life, didn’t know how therapeutic art was until she enrolled in the Art Therapy diploma program in Nelson B.C. “I was happy doing it, and it felt good,” she says. “I had no idea it was therapy. I was expressing my life through art.”

To Murdoch, creating art is cathartic.

“There are a lot of things our unconscious mind lets out in art,” she says.

On the day of the retreat participants will gather at the hospice, an inviting little house on Jarvis Street, and introduce themselves to the other participants and the two facilitators.

The group setting brings people together with a common experience, although there is no pres-

sure to talk about the grief.

“The creative expression gives them the opportunity to do it without words,” Murdoch says.

“We’re giving them the time to acknowledge their grief and honour their losses.”

Because it is a tiny space, the group will be limited to eight participants. Names are all that is needed, and participants are afforded a great deal of personal freedom.

“It’s not about fitting in with what everyone else is doing,” Murdoch explains. “It’s really about honouring where they are.”

Participants will be guided through a meditation and then supported in establishing a comfortable space to work in the colourful setting of the hospice.

Art supplies such as pens, pencils, paints and papers are available, but participants are encouraged to do what they wish with the time.

“It’s really about the process instead of the product,” Murdoch says. “Some will just sit amongst everyone else who is working and read books.”

To encourage participants to focus on themselves and their healing process they are discour-

aged from commenting on each other’s art.

“It’s a part of your own mind and we discourage the discussion because there’s really strong feelings connected to it so it may shut (some people) down,” Murdoch says.

Throughout the day participants are free to work or take a walk at their own leisure.

At 3 p.m. it will be time to debrief, and the participants can decide if they want to share their work.

“It can be as simple as holding up what they have created and putting it away,” Murdoch says.

The Quiet Day Retreat: Expressions of Grief is a free event taking place at Hospice Yukon from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7. Lunch will be provided.
