T

he top of Grey Mountain is one of my favourite places in the world. In a territory that features nine of the 10 highest peaks in Canada, it doesn’t amount to anything more than a nub, and yet for me it is a magical place.

Every summer that I have spent in the Yukon has included at least one trip to the top of the hill.

Once there I always do at least one of the following things: tramp along the ridge, enjoy a beer on the helicopter pad, imagine how scary it would be to find yourself stuck at the top of the radio tower, yell obscenities into the wind, appreciate the quaintness of our little river-valley town, pretend I’m Godzilla, turn away from Whitehorse and be struck with awe at the immensity of the land as it sprawls towards the hori-

zon, or sit quietly and ruminate on whatever requires rumination (girls). On some visits, I do all of the above.

It’s almost a pilgrimage for me, and once the downtown blare wears off, I usually feel oddly at peace, and if someone else is driving, a little bit drunk.

I use the phrase “oddly at peace,” not because I am a chronically tortured soul but because the specific feeling of tranquility that Grey Mountain affords me has a unique texture to it.

I feel like I’m home when I’m up there; I feel like I am in exactly the right spot. No other mountain or hilltop makes me feel this way (though to be fair I haven’t climbed Everest… yet).

Why this rock heap of all places? After all, Grey Mountain looks kind of like a hairy tumor.

As a person who is known to take the occasional cheap shot at new age spirituality, I have to choose my words carefully.

As near as I can tell, it has something to do with the consistency of the thing. People come and people go, as do phases, fads, farts, fortunes, and Dairy Queens.

But I was born in the shadow of Grey Mountain and it’s nice to think that it’s been looming benevolently over me ever since.

In June 2011 I celebrated the solstice with about 20 others by merrily hiking along the path that leads northward from the helicopter pad. We spent hours up there, enjoying each other’s company and soaking in the late night vitamin D. It was such a life-affirming night that no one wanted to leave the top of the mountain.

I think part of me never has.

Making Culinary Art from Local Trees

Dawson food artisans to present their products to national chefs

ou know that thing that happens when you taste something and it is so delicious that the experience goes beyond just eating something to this ethereal, transcendental, whole body experience?

High-end chefs are always on the hunt for a new source of that experience and according to Whitehorse cook and author Michele Genest, there is a new interest in what culinary treasures the Yukon might hold.

Genest points to recent visits from chefs hosting cooking shows as evidence of the growing interest. In addition, a restaurant in Denmark is attracting attention for its menu of wild and foraged Northern food.

“That has caused attention to turn to Canada’s North, to see what is grown here,” Genest says.

“We’re at a moment when attention has turned towards ingredients in the North that are not part of the normal diet, but are considered very rich ground for experimentation and learning.

“There are chefs coming up here who are interested in hooking up with Yukon First Nations to learn about traditional approaches to food and learning about ingredients.”

Ingredients like birch sap and spruce tips, for example.

Genest is part of a team of who recently selected two Yukon food companies to be featured in a national showcase. The program is called the Artisan Incubator, presented by the ACE Bakery based in Toronto. In June, 20 artisans from

across Canada will introduce their products to players in the food industry and receive support for growing their business.

From then Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, two food producers were selected, and both are from Dawson City: Lyndsey Berwyn Larson, with Uncle Berwyn’s Yukon Birch Syrup, for their Pure Birch Syrup; and Christine Clarke and David Curtis, with Up River Commercial Fishing, for their spruce tip-infused organic olive oil.

“These two artisans are really interesting,” Genest says. “Uncle Berwyn’s Birch Syrup is the best I’ve ever tasted. His has a really unique quality, so its exciting for us to go down to Toronto and have the chefs taste the syrup and potentially order it and use it in their menus.

“And I think the chefs are going to be really excited about the possibilities with the spruce tip oil and the things you can do with it.”

Both companies were selected because of their commitment to sustainable harvesting and the care they put into their products.

Lyndsey Berwyn Larson is currently camped out with his team at their birch forest, tapping the trees and boiling down the sap in the sugar shack.

Back in Dawson, it’s almost time to harvest spruce tips.

Clarke and Curtis started Up River Commercial Fishing to harvest chum salmon and, as Genest says, “turn it into something we are interested in eating as a table food, which is elevating it from the lowliest echelon as only dog food.”

But salmon numbers fluctuate from year to year and as a business they would be vulnerable if that were their only product.

“We decided if we’re going to invest in a commercial kitchen, we’d want to tie in with other products that would be used with the salmon,” Curtis says.

Spruce tips have a long tradition as food and medicine for First Nations and Europeans, Curtis says. Apparently, they’re delicious – and healing – to this day.

The first time Curtis tasted what spruce tips can do to a meal was one of those magical, beyond-

food experiences.

“I was working with Miche Genest on a recipe for ground chum salmon burgers when I was introduced to the wonderful world of spruce tips,” he says. “It was a spruce tip, juniper and white wine salmon burger and the taste of it brought tears to my eyes – not in a bad way.”

Spruce tips have a citrusy and resinous flavour, which, Curtis says, is “woodsy.” Makes sense.

“It adds a subtle flavour to things,” he says. And it’s a versatile flavour that goes well with savoury and with sweet.”

For a very northern experience, he recommends trying bannock made with spruce tips with melted juniper butter on top.

For a northern nightcap, try his Whiskey Sweet: one part Jamieson Irish Whiskey and a half part spruce tip syrup.

“It’s a gorgeous drink,” Curtis says.

Supporting the Economy Through the Arts DCAS adds an artistic touch to the Klondike

W

hen you talk to former placer miner Greg Hakonson about the discussion he and local artist John Steins had about starting the Dawson City Arts Society back in the late 1990s, he says the idea was partly to give the Klondike an economic base that had more than a 10-year life span.

You could expect a 10-years lifespan from mining projects, and Hakonson is well aware that placer miners have been roaming

the creeks since 1898 and show no signs of stopping, but the short life of Viceroy’s Brewery Creek Mine and the short lived Clinton Creek asbestos mine tend to prove his point.

The reliable economic base in Dawson had been government, mining and tourism and Hakonson saw the arts as having the potential to provide another leg to the stool.

The community filled the Odd Fellows Hall ballroom during the recent Dawson City International Short Film festival. spring of 1998. From that point on, the society has been instrumental in launching arts activities, programs, festivals and more – each providing jobs and indirect economic benefit to the community.

By the autumn of 1998, DCAS had obtained the Odd Fellows Hall on Second Avenue.

The building was moribund, but Hakonson spurred the drive to rebuild it and turn it into an arts showplace with assistance from governments, community associations, the private sector, and numerous volunteers.

DCAS became the governing body and the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture (KIAC) became its program arm. The doors opened in December 1999 and in March 2000 Governor General Adrienne Clarkson attended the first art show at the ODD Gallery.

The first annual Dawson City International Short Film Festival was held the next month.

From its inception to today, DCAS is directly responsible for approximately six jobs through KIAC and indirectly for plenty more arts-related economic activities.

In 2001, the community saw the first Yukon Riverside Arts Festival (reviving the Discovery Day celebrations); the grand opening of the KIAC Artist Residency, housed in the Macaulay House, owned by Parks Canada; and the first edition of the Youth Art Enrichment program.

Over the next few years the Arts for Employment program would be run in partnership with Yukon College, acting as a pilot project for the eventual establishment of the Yukon School of Visual Art (originally KIAC) in another resurrected building on Third Avenue.

The list of programs that DCAS/ KIAC runs or assists includes community arts courses, visual arts, music lessons, media arts, dance and movement, writing workshops, performing arts, a summer art camp, concerts, theatre productions, monthly coffee house/ open mic nights, the annual 48 Hour Film Competition and snow carving during Thaw di Gras. The reports tabled at the latest annual general meeting have lists that go on for pages.

refers to the society as a key element in a cultural cluster in town.

It partners with the Dawson City Music Festival, Yukon SOVA, Yukon College, the Robert Service School, the Dawson Community Library, Parks Canada and the Berton House Writers’ Retreat to accomplish a great many things.

Presently DCAS is working on developing the second year of an ArtsGate project with the newly formed Friends of Bear Creek Society, and is part of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in’s regional economic development plan, looking to revitalize the use of the Palace Grand Theatre for live performances and establish some variety of Artists’ Cooperative in the region.

In the 15 years since that seminal conversation DCAS has embedded itself in the community and added an artistic touch to the Klondike.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Musical Theatre in Dawson is the Cat’s Meow

J

ack Amos is not an ordinary 11-year-old boy. He is producing, directing, choreographing and scripting his own production of Jellicle Cats, which will premiere in Dawson City on April 27.

Amos, who is home-schooled by his parents, has always loved performing music and dance. He started learning the fiddle at seven years old, and was soon busking for charity and performing at coffee houses held in Dawson on occasional Saturday nights.

He eventually added singing and reciting poetry to his repertoire, and puts on an annual musical act for Dawson’s spring carnival Lip Sync event.

The idea for a musical production started when the family visited friends in Victoria, B.C. in January 2012.

“Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” was one of the songs Amos learned from their friends’ daughter, who is involved with musical dance theatre. He decided that Dawson needed to have musical theatre as well.

After making several phones calls for advice, Amos set up a non-profit organization called It’s Going To Happen!, an organization that aims to do theatre productions with Dawson kids on a regular basis. Amos applied for and received a grant from the City of Dawson, and fund-raised enough money to hire a dance choreographer, two vocal instructors and a pianist.

Amos and his father then made up posters for auditions, which were held in January. He cast 14 children between the ages of seven and 13, including Amos’s seven-year-old sister Jesse.

“I think it’s clever of Jack to put on a musical,” she says. “He’s doing a good job.”

He then wrote the script, which he stayed up several nights to do.

He chose eight songs from the original CATS production, a musical he picked just to get started.

“There are no main characters, so there won’t be any fights between the actors,” Amos says.

Rehearsals started the third week of February, on Saturdays only, but eventually progressed to two-and-a-half hours every Saturday and Sunday.

Parents will sew their own child’s costume, while others are helping to build and paint the sets.

“It really brings the expertise to the table and is bringing out hidden talents of the community,” says Michelle Caws, whose nineyear-old daughter, Elizabeth, is playing the role of Jemimah.

Caws is helping make masks, headpieces and whatever else needs doing.

Even though Caws jokingly says that all the rehearsal time cuts into her skiing, she is serious when she points out how this project has impacted the kids involved.

“There’s magic happening with all the children,” she says.

“My daughter practices at home all the time, and films herself and her friends on her iPod. It’s beautiful stuff and puts the biggest grin on my face.”

When asked if he has ever had doubts about the show, Amos mentions a bad dream where he couldn’t remember his lines.

“That made me nervous,” he says. But after the next rehearsal, he gained his confidence back. “I felt much better about it all.”

Amos’s mother, Bridget, feels that her son’s success is a reflection of Dawson and Yukon.

“This is a very supportive community,” she says. “As a mom it’s wonderful to see that your son can do anything… it happens because of where we live.”

“Hopefully I’ve started something that will make people understand that if an 11-year-old boy can do this, so can they,” concludes Amos. “I hope I’ve started something big… I want to get Dawson into acting and musical theatre.”

Jellicle Cats will be performed on April 27 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Amos feels the show is coming along nicely.

“The kids are finally settling into their characters,” he says.

“They’re actually starting to act.”

When auditions were first held, only a third of the kids could sing.

“Now they all can,” he says with a grin.

Alysha Soliguen, a 13 year old playing the part of Griddlebone, has never taken singing lessons before. Although she thinks she’ll be very nervous come show-time, she is still feeling very excited about the show.

“I’m looking forward to it,” she says. “I’m feeling really good.”

Growing a Sense of Community

Food Bank clients receive vegetables from Whitehorse gardeners

any Whitehorse gardeners are planning to grow an extra row of vegetables to donate to the food bank this year. The idea is part of a crosscountry initiative called Grow- ARow and 35 communities are on board, including Whitehorse.

The program is the brainchild of two green thumbs in Winnipeg, Ron and Eunice O’Donovan. In the summer of 1986 the O’Donovans produced more potatoes in their backyard garden than they could consume, so they decided to donate the surplus to the local food bank. Word about the generous growers spread quickly and it soon became an annual practice to plant an extra row of vegetables.

Since that first summer, more than 1.4 million pounds of produce have been given to the Winnipeg Harvest through the GrowA-Row program.

Now in its fourth year in White-

horse, participation in the program has been steadily increasing.

“Each year more and more people are taking part,” says Stephen Dunbar-Edge, executive director of the Whitehorse Food Bank. “We process hundreds of pounds of garden fresh vegetables, and we’re open for more.”

Local gardeners plant an extra row of vegetables and bring the fresh produce into the food bank.

It is then sorted and tallied and clients of the food bank can check off items they wish to receive.

“We want anything that can be grown and be eaten,” says Dunbar-Edge. “Even at the highest volumes, we never throw anything out.”

The program is a partnership between the food bank and Yukon Heath Services. Kim Neufeld, the dietitian with the program, says the growth can be attributed to tangible results.

“It gives people that extra reason to garden,” she says. “They know it’s going to benefit others.”

Health Services evaluated Grow-A-Row in 2011 and the findings were encouraging. In August of 2011, 200 hampers containing fresh produce were given out, which fed approximately 460 people, Neufeld says. That month, the program provided 3,000 servings of fresh vegetables.

“It really is significant,” she says. “It’s a great resource for the community.”

Once a week throughout the harvest season Macdonald and others comb over the plots and collect produce to bring to the food bank.

“Sometimes people get eager early in the season and plant too much,” she says. “And then when it actually grows they realize they can’t consume all that food. So we collect it, weigh it all, sort it and drop it off.”

The community garden aims to donate 500 pounds of produce each season, and while they haven’t hit it yet (they’re usually around the 400 pound mark), it’s great incentive to get digging and planting.

“It’s pretty exciting when you can take 30 pounds of kale into the food bank,” laughs Macdonald. “At least for me.”

The vegetables that are grown in the community garden are also organic.

“They’re 10 times better than anything you can buy at the grocery store,” says MacDonald. “Al-

most everyone is giving to it,” she adds. “It’s better to give to the food bank and let someone have the opportunity to take it then to have it go to waste.”

When she goes into the food bank every Thursday morning to drop off the produce, Macdonald sees the benefit of the program first hand.

“There are regulars there and they see me coming in with the vegetables and they’re always excited,” she says.

Extra Foods also donates plastic bags to DUGS so they can package the food before dropping it off.

“Any gardeners can come out and participate,” says MacDonald.

“People always enjoy doing it and it really does build a sense of community.”

T

he Yukon Film Society (YFS) is taking it’s production The Grub-Stake Revisited on tour in early May as part of Northern Scene at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre (NAC). Besides the NAC performance, where the show shares the spotlight with the largest contingent of northern artists ever assembled outside the North, it will also travel to Calgary and Toronto, where it will show at the Toronto International Film Festival’s new Bell Lightbox Theatre.

The Grub-Stake is a 1923 silent film directed

by Canadian filmmaker Nell Shipman. She was a rarity of her era — a vibrant, feminist independent filmmaker with a mind of her own.

Born in Victoria, she moved to Hollywood, but returned to Canada in 1919 to shoot Back To God’s Country, an action melodrama set in northern Alberta, which has the distinction of being the first English-language Canadian feature, and also the most successful. Its 300 per cent return on investment has yet to be duplicated by another Canadian film, and it was also notable for one of the first full-frontal nude scenes in film history.

The Grub-Stake was less successful for Shipman, and was never released in wide distribution. Set in the Klondike, it tells the story of a young woman who was lured to the Yukon by a sweet-talking gambler who promised to marry her and set her

up with a grubstake for a gold mine.

However, once she arrives in Dawson City, accompanied by her ailing father, she finds that the gambler is scheming to sell her to a dance hall.

Turning the tables on him, she sets out with his dogsled and supplies, along with her father and an old miner they’d met, to find a lost gold claim the miner had been searching for.

It was a reworking of Tales from The Gimli Hospital, and they had a quartet of musicians from Iceland they brought in to do the music live, and a narrator, narrating the film live, and then they had a foley artist as well, doing effects live.

Connors pitched Shipman’s film as the basis for the project, and Janke,

who is the production’s artistic director, offered to write a new score and script.

“Daniel realized he still wanted to do the script, but didn’t have time to write a wholly original script, and had the brainwave to pull from the works of Shakespeare,” Connors says.

But maintaining the integrity of the original work was essential.

“For the most part, we tried to honour the original story that Nell wrote,” he says. “It’s very complementary to that story, and works in concert with the text.”

Celia McBride, Eric Epstein and Janke each took one 25-minute act of the film, and looked through the Bard’s complete works, matching dialogue to the on-screen action.

The adaptation was ready within a month.

Six Yukon actors voice the film’s Shakespearean dialogue live, accompanied musically by the fivepiece Longest Night Ensemble.

The Grub-Stake Revisited Spring Tour will open at Calgary’s Plaza Theatre on May 1, followed by its Ottawa performance on May 3, and then will play the Toronto International Film Festival’s Bell Lightbox Theatre on May 6 and 7.

Whitehorse audiences will have one more chance to see The Grub-Stake Revisited before it goes on tour at a special live showing on Monday, April 29 at 8 p.m. at the Yukon Arts Centre, complete with actors and musical score.

Sauerkraut and Sausage

A

s a child of two European immigrants I was fortunate to enjoy many European meals in my own home growing up. From my father’s Dutch heritage we enjoyed meatball soup and rolladin regularly. My father’s pockets always contained my favourite treat - double salted liquorice. This treat is definitely an acquired taste that most of my friends don’t understand.

Some of my favourites from my mother’s German ancestry were sauerkraut and sausage as well as plum perogies with whipped cream.

As a young child I loved visiting the Yukon Meat and Sausage Deli where my mom would purchase special treats like double salted liquorice and German ginger cookies along with sausage for her sauerkraut. I still love the smell of that deli when you walk in and all the European treats greet you. I find it stunning how the smell of sauerkraut or the taste of salted liquorice can immediate transport me to childhood memories.

Several years ago I was diagnosed with leukemia and was required to stay in a quarantined hospital room in Vancouver for 30 days. Thirty days of isolation with hospital food can make one’s mouth water for just about anything. After that time I was allowed to fly home for the weekend before returning to Vancouver for the re-

Sauerkraut and sausages, a meal worth craving. mainder of my treatment. When my mother found out I was allowed to return home for the weekend she asked me what I would like for a special meal on my return, the answer was easy, sauerkraut and sausage. I didn’t care

about what the chemo had done to my stomach or taste buds I just knew that mom’s sauerkraut sounded like a little piece of heaven.

As the days led up to my release it was all I could think about. When I returned home I was greeted by the smell of cabbage and sausage. In my mind there was no better smell. My blessed mother had cooked up the biggest feast of sauerkraut I could imagine. With no thought as to how my stomach would handle it I immediately dived in to my full plate and savoured every mouthful. Sadly, because of the chemo treatments, I suffered a bit of a stomachache after, though it was worth every ounce of pain.

I have not been fortunate enough to find many local restaurants that serve good European fare. I long for a day when I can stroll through the streets of a small European town and find their delicacies on every corner and in many of their restaurants, accompanied by the beautiful spirit of the European culture I grew up with. I believe European food would certainly taste even better with the atmosphere and ambiance to accompany it, though I’d be hard pressed to find a sauerkraut that tastes better than my mom’s.

Vino Borealis with Peter Turner

A Home Run Malbec from Cahors, France

M

y faith in French winemakers has been restored.

We are familiar with names of great French Bordeaux wines like Château Lafite Rothschild, that sell out immediately, year after year, and command prices that average, for the 2009 vintage, $1500 a bottle.

When it comes to Roll Royce wines, the French have never lost their touch. The problem is, I haven’t seen any Roll Royces driving around Whitehorse lately.

I want a Subaru-quality wine, and the French have failed monumentally at this over the last 15 years.

Italy, Spain, Australia, Argentina, Chile, and increasingly Canada, have begun to crank out predictably tasty wines for under $20, but I have spent the last five years trying to find something French in this price range that really rings my chimes.

Well, I’ve found it!

Check out the 2009 Domaine de Cause Malbec, from the Cahors Appelation ($17.90). It’s so good on so many levels.

The Cahors Appellation is the poor, country cousin of the world famous Bordeaux region. It has all the winemaking tradition of that storied region, uses the same grapes, has many of the same geographical aspects and makes many of the same blends.

Cahors wine was present at the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine with Henry II of England, and Pope John XXII, born in Cahors, drank it both recreationally and sacramentally.

The problem is, this wine if from the “wrong side of the tracks,” and has recently been outshone by the Bordeaux region to the west.

This has fueled the interest of Cahors winemakers to create some truly good and reasonably priced wines over the past decade.

It’s interesting how much Ca-

hors winemakers have invested in re-inventing Malbec wines in France. Malbec has become Argentina’s signature red win, but those Malbec grapes were brought from France to be planted in Argentina in the 1850s and 1860s.

In the last 20 years, Cahors winemakers have repatriated their long absent French grape, and made Cahors the premiere Malbecgrape growing region in France.

The YLC also carries another Cahors Malbec, from Maison Rigal ($17.20).

Spend the extra $0.70.

So why is the 2009 Domaine de Cause Malbec so good?

First, the colour. Cahors wines are traditionally described as “black wines.” They are a deep, rich purple colour in the glass, but when you hold this one up to the light, the purity of its rich red hue makes it one of the most pleasingly-coloured wines I have ever seen in the glass.

Then there’s the bouquet — definitely “old world” rather than “new world.” It’s subtle, not overly oaky, reminding me of the better Bordeaux wines — very different than any of the Argentinean Malbecs I’ve had.

Taste: think rich red currants and cherries, a little pepper, tobacco, but neither too tannic nor too oaky. Just right.

I had it with a turkey casserole, and it worked perfectly, complementing the creaminess of the mushrooms and noodles — preparing my palate for the next bite.

Last night I had it again with burgers, and it was equally good.

I can’t wait to see if my wine enthusiast friends are equally impressed.

W

hen you live in a place where it is winter for half the year you would expect fashion to be restricted to parkas and boots, but that’s not the case.

Tomorrow night in Ottawa three Yukon designers will show their work at Northern Scene’s contemporary themed evening, SWARM, which features music, art, fashion and a party.

The show’s curator, Jamie Look, has been excited about the show Boundless: Fashion from Canada’s North for quite some time.

“I wanted to give them a chance to showcase their work on a no-holds-bar runway,” she says. “It’s really been left up to the designers to present themselves in a way that they wish to be seen.”

The only stipulation is that that each designer submit 12 garments each. In her selection process she sought designers who were keen, actively engaged, available to commit, and willing to work with and meet new people. Here is the Yukon contingent:

Sho Sho Esquiro

E

squiro currently lives in Vancouver, but her roots will always be in the Yukon. Of Cree, Scottish and Ross River Kaska Dene descent, she grew up with an appreciation for the sewing and beadwork skills of her many aunties — it was always something that she knew she wanted to do.

The inspiration for her latest collection, called Nahuatl, came all the way from South America and travelled up through the American southwest, where it found Esquiro on one of her many tours through the United States.

Frida Kahlo, the Mexican celebration Dia de los Muertos, and Mayan ancestors will be echoed in Esquiro’s designs.

“We’ve lost a lot of people in the Yukon and I like the idea of the Day of the Dead celebration,” she says. “It’s one day out of the year when all of our loved ones can come back and celebrate with us once again.”

Like Esquiro’s collection, Dia de los Muertos is anything but morbid. Jamie Look recognized and loved this about Esquiro’s colourful submissions that reflect a “young, fun, wild and original” designer.

Esquiro’s clothing is handmade and utilizes recycled leather, from salmon to alligator, various furs and ecofriendly fabrics such as bamboo and hemp.

Esquiro encourages young designers to “Keep sewing and to keep learning, whether you take the education route or not. And when you are presented with an opportunity, make sure that you follow through and do your best.”

Esquiro has had shows in the Hamptons, New York, the American southwest, Oregon and Vancouver, but this will be her first time presenting in Ottawa.

“I am honoured to be representing my home territory alongside other talented Yukoners,” she says.

sp, whose First Nation ancestry is Tahltan, Tutchone, and Tlingit,, has been learning the art of custom clothing construction and concepts of print design from her mother and paternal grandmother since the age of seven. Her latest collection is entitled Gems of My Life and her muse is gratitude.

“This collection is a way for me to honour and thank all of the people in my life who have inspired me to be a better person,” says Asp. Look was moved by her clothing. “(It’s) so inspiring to receive this submission from a fellow designer and mother,” she says. “I could feel her deep love of family and the connection to her history through her clothing design. I wanted her to have an opportunity to showcase that combination of tradition and couture on the runway.”

What makes Asp’s designs unique are her signature shirt collars and her custom handmade prints, which she designs with her partner Warren Smith.

“Find out where your true passion is; the thing that you enjoy doing most; honour that feeling and strive to learn more about it,” Asp advises others. “There will be challenges along the way, but if you never give up on yourself, you will get there, even if you don’t know how – where there is a will there is always a way.”

Northern Scene will be Asp’s first collection and show since she completed her formal training at the Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver. Here in the Yukon, we will have to wait and see the Gems collection when it is presented at the Adaka Cultural Festival in June.

Jessica Vellenga

V

ellenga has a trained background in fine art and has been making garments for herself since she was a teenager.

She is self-taught, but in the past two years she has had the opportunity to take sewing and millinery classes at the Yukon College with fellow designer and mentor, Lea-Ann Dorval.

Vellenga has made some sensual yet wearable art to present at Northern Scene. Her latest collection is inspired by women’s fashion of the 1920s and 50s.

“I wanted to make a series of lingerie that was classic and comfortable, using cashmere, silk, mohair and other luxurious materials,” she says.

Each piece she creates features hand-made embellishments of crochet, tatting, lace or embroidery, which she produces or sources from antique and vintage textiles. She also utilizes vintage textiles to create accessories.

“She’s right on trend with the recycling of garments and the sourcing of vintage materials,” exclaims Look. “I enjoy the work she’s already created and I’m really interested to see what she comes up with in the future.”

Vellenga looks forward to meeting the other designers and seeing their collections, as well as being able to partake in the rest of the festival. Her advice for those who want to start designing parallels the enthusiasm she has for her own Northern Scene opportunity.

“Research the designers and techniques that inspire you,” she says. “Enroll in design school or classes, attend fashion shows or exhibitions and network with other designers.”

More Artists Heading to Ottawa

Tlingit animator presenting art at Northern Scene

D

oug Smarch Jr., a member of the Tlingit Nation from Teslin, is a conceptual artist working in sculpture and animation whose work will be featured at Northern Scene in Ottawa this spring.

Smarch’s piece, Lucinations, brings people into the spiritual world of himself and his community through an animated, three-dimensional retelling of a traditional story. The installation is projected onto an ethereal 20 X 12 foot screen made of approximately 15,000 white feathers.

“I was able to express a part of my imagination that was very personal,” he says of Lucinations.

The feather screen represents the dark cloud in the story hanging over the community, and the animation shows Smarch’s visions of nature confessing drastic changes to come.

People often react to the piece by becoming quiet and just sitting with it.

“The piece is hard to talk about, people need to experience it,” he says.

Though he uses modern tools, such as the computer program 3D Maya for the animation, the past is very important in his art.

“I know in my Nation we are all woven together with this connection we have: our past,” he says. “When I go out and do my art and work with media I bring that with me. It’s very real; it’s not hypothetical. My culture is inside my DNA and I can still access that part of me and work with it. I don’t consider it as primitive.”

One of three editions of Lucinations belongs to the National Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Ottawa and Smarch is hopeful the Yukon will acquire one on home turf.

osemary Scanlon grew up in Montreal and turned to art for expression in her teen years.

“I was a pretty shy kid so I did a lot of drawing,” she

says.

Then in high school she did a large-scale portraiture project and art became her passion.

She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University, and produced many striking, large-scale oil paintings. But upon completion of her degree, she was tired of the art scene and began doing odd jobs. One such stint of employment took place in an art auction house. It was here that she had a “eureka” moment.

“It was a wake up call,” says Scanlon. “The people there didn’t care about artwork, they cared about money, and I didn’t want to take advantage of the arts that way.”

So she enrolled in a Master’s program in Glasgow, Scotland, and jumped back in with both feet.

This time she concentrated on watercolours instead of oils. It was largely a practical decision. “(Watercolours are) really manageable, you can do it on your kitchen table,” says Scanlon.

But Scanlon also saw potential in the medium that extended beyond the almost clichéd landscapes with which watercolours are often associated.

Consider her painting, “Shadows of the Alaska Highway #1.” It is her attempt to capture the hallucinatory aspects of a long road trip.

“When you drive for a really long time you start seeing things,” says Scanlon. “You wonder, ‘did I see that or am I going crazy?’”

The painting is challenging, creepy, and also austerely beautiful — not your grandfather’s watercolour.

Now Scanlon, a permanent Yukon resident since 2010, is heading to Northern Scene in Ottawa and is excited about local artists entering the national dialogue on art.

“People will come to see a lot of artists a get a sense of what is going on up here,” she says.

orn and raised Yukon singer songwriter Declan O’Donovan is setting sail for The Rainbow Room in Ottawa as a featured performer in the upcoming Northern Scene bonanza of music, visual art, storytelling and so much more.

O’Donovan has put together a top notch band and is teaming up with Whitehorse-based roots and blues luminary Ryan McNally for the show, which is a kick off for their double-billed eastern tour. At Northern Scene, local drum ninja, upright bass player and fledgling film star Keith Picot will back him up.

Fresh from success in local clubs and international acclaim for his songwriting skills, O’Donovan is touring from Ottawa to New York City where he is excited to play The Rockwood Music Hall — one of his favourite venues.

The attention south of the border came by way of the West Coast Songwriters International Song Contest in the Blues category, where he was the only Canadian finalist.

O’Donovan seems poised for a successful run of shows.

His combination of musical skill, word play, performance chops and rugged good looks is likely to win him new fans on sophisticated eastern shores.

Many will remember high-energy performances by O’Donovan with his former band mates in the local band, Scotch. Now, piano ballads figure prominently on his self-titled 2012 CD release and address late night themes of love and loss.

O’Donovan is off to Toronto to begin rehearsals with his band mates on their way to showcase northern talent in the Nation’s capital. His favourite scotch is Lagavulin or whatever else you want to buy him.

How to Avoid Tempting Hungry Bears to Your Home

Human-wildlife conflict is any interaction between wildlife and humans that causes harm — to a human, a wild animal, or to property. Wildwise’s ultimate goal is to reduce the number of bears and other wildlife species that are killed due to such conflict.

Wildwise Yukon is a program under the umbrella of the Centre for Human-Wildlife Conflict Solutions. The organization is made up of five dedicated volunteers who are passionate about protecting wildlife.

A

new community-based wildlife organization is presenting a series of guest speaker events in three Yukon communities in May. Wildwise Yukon, a newly formed organization, aims to create a lively and informative discussion about how to reduce the kinds of things in your home and neighborhood that attract bears and other wildlife.

Last year Whitehorse Conservation Officers had to destroy 16 bears that had become accustomed to eating human food and garbage and were presenting a threat for Yukon residents.

The Be Wildwise speaker series, featuring free admission, will take place between May 1 and May 8 in Mt. Lorne, Marsh Lake and Tagish. The timing of these events gives residents the information needed to prevent conflict with bears that are emerging from hibernation and looking for food.

The series includes Conservation Officers, who will speak about bear attractant reduction in rural and residential areas; Conservation Officer Dave Bakica, who will share his knowledge from 23 years of working with wildlife in the Yukon; and wildlife managers,

at the Mount Lorne Community Centre, located at kilometre 1 of the Annie Lake Road, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; on May 7 at the Marsh Lake Community Centre, located at 80 Doehle Drive in the Judas Creek Subdivision, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and on May 8 at the Tagish Community Centre, located 1 kilometre south of the Tagish Bridge, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Margarine vs. Butter The grudge match

versus

Two ancient rivals duke it out.

W

hen I was asked to do an article on the health differences between margarine and butter I was a little apprehensive. The thought of margarine makes me cringe and I eat butter like its going out of style.

Personal biases aside, here are facts on butter and margarine.

You can decide for yourself.

Calories Butter and margarine typically have the same amount of calories (and fat grams), except when it comes to light margarine, or margarine-like spreads, which have less. Please note that the light spreads typically contain hydrogenated fats and are very processed.

Toxins In Animal Fats Antibiotic levels are high in non-organic cows and traces of these drugs can be found in their milk products, including butter.

Also, toxic build-up from highly fertilized and/or high-pesticide feed is found in high concentrations in the fat of animals. Therefore, if you choose butter, you should buy the organic variety.

Stability of Fats Unlike butter, margarine is not suited for heating. The fat will denature, causing production of toxic materials. Butter is stable enough to be heated.

Price The difference between margarine (cheap) and organic butter (expensive) is pretty big.

Saturated and Unsaturated Fats Margarine contains mostly unsaturated fats. Butter contains saturated fat, which has a bad reputation, especially in relation to heart-health. But our bodies require some saturated fats in order to function properly. Cutting it out of your diet completely is not a good idea. The book, Fats That Heal Fats That Kill by Udo Erasmus has everything you need to know about good fats and bad fats.

Also, recent evidence from Nutritional Bypass by David W. Rowl suggests that saturated fats do not cause heart disease.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overdo it though, and if you are trying to lose weight use either sparingly.

So there it is, the grudge match between butter and margarine.

Decide what works best for you and enjoy it!

Whole Foods Margarine contains chemicals including colouring agents, emulsifiers, unnatural fatty acids and flavouring agents. These additives are unfavourable due to their toxic properties and also make margarine more difficult to digest than butter. Butter on the other hand is a whole food, containing just milk fat and sometimes salt.

Here’s What They’ve Been Up To SOVA students present their year-end work in Dawson City New ideas, canvases, media and techniques have collided together at the Yukon School of Visual Art (SOVA) over the winter, resulting in a new crop of artworks ready for exhibition.

The students are celebrating their accomplishments with the SOVA Year-End Exhibition in Dawson City, opening tonight, April 25, and running until May 11.

Many of the artists graduating from the one-year program are using it to launch into the second year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver; Nova Scotia College of Art and Design; and OCAD University in Toronto.

Home-Made Trail Snacks The silent filler Fruit Leather

Fruit Leather is a chewy fruit roll or bar made by blending and drying fresh fruit into a leathery consistency. If it is kept cool it will last for the duration of any trek or sleep-over.

To make your own, use a Teflon coated cookie sheet covered with a plastic wrap held around the edges with masking tape.

Puree the fresh fruit in a blender until it is a smooth, even consistency. If the fruit needs a hint of sweetness add a little honey or white corn syrup. Neither of these will crystallize like white sugar, which would make the leather more brittle. The puree will concentrate in sweetness as it dries.

Add a small amount of lemon juice to enhance that natural fruit flavour.

Spread the puree over the cookie sheet about a quarter inch

thick and about 1 inch in from the sides of the tray. Dry it until it is pliable but not sticky to the touch.

Cut the product into 4 inch bars, rolling them if you wish, and wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap or put them in a zip-lock bags with plastic wrap between each bar. Label different flavours.

The puree can be dried on Saran wrap in a dehydrator or in an oven. Oven-drying is done at the lowest possible temperature setting with the door propped open.

If necessary, rotate the position of trays to get it all done thoroughly and evenly. On your first try, keep checking the oven to establish the duration of drying, as well as how often the trays need to be rotated. Two hours will likely be the minimum.
