first saw The Big Lebowski at the local theatre in the spring of 1998 with Barrett Mataseje and Chris Fozard. I howled my face off but even I couldn’t have predicted the degree to which this Coen Brothers’ film would infiltrate the collective consciousness during the subsequent 15 years.

The plot (a phrase that doesn’t do this movie justice) revolves around an aging hippy whose parents named him Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges), but who is exclusively referred to as The Dude.

One night The Dude returns home from bowling practice to discover a couple of thugs in his grungy townhouse. One of them pees on his carpet.

It turns out the hired goons were after another guy named Jeff Lebowski, who happens to be rich.

Acting on the advice of his best friend Walter (John Goodman), a shell-shocked ‘Nam vet, The Dude tracks down the wealthy Lebowski in hopes of receiving compensation for his soiled rug. After all, “it really tied the room together.”

The Dude ends up being implicated in a kidnapping scheme revolving around Lebowski’s wife, Bunny, and spends the rest of the movie ricocheting from one absurd situation to the next in greater Los Angeles. But he can’t let a little ransom plot affect his bowling game, after all, his team is trying to roll their way into the semis.

“Fortunately, I’m adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber,” he says.

To watch The Big Lebowski is to immerse yourself in a world of ruthless pornographers, avant garde artists, German nihilists, White Russians, reactionary police chiefs, purple-clad pederasts (the incomparable John Turturro), landlords with a penchant for in-

terpretive dance, junior high car thieves, “thorough” doctors, and militant black cab drivers who

Every character, no matter how little screen time they receive, is made memorable by the Coens’ endlessly quotable script.

I would wager that in the decade-and-a-half since its release, no film has been quoted more than The Big Lebowski. Everyone has a favourite line.

Mine?

“Three thousand years of beautiful tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you’re damn right I’m living in the past.”

You’ll have to watch the film to get the context.

I’ve watched it at least two dozen times. It’s like having lunch with a friend you haven’t seen in ages. I don’t laugh out loud as much as I used to, but I do sit there with a big, goofy grin on my face, anticipating the next timeless moment, which is rarely more than two minutes away.

One of the advantages of seeing it so many times is that it frees me up to more-or-less ignore the storyline and concentrate on the minutiae that gets lost in the first few viewings.

For example, the most recent time I watched The Big Lebowski I paid special attention to Steve

Buscemi’s facial expressions.

Buscemi plays Donny, Walter and The Dude’s babe-in-the-woods bowling teammate.

He doesn’t say much because Walter is fond of saying “Shut the youknowwhat up, Donny,” but he is always there in the background, looking hilariously bewildered.

The Big Lebowski followed Fargo in the Coen Brothers’ filmography and as a result some critics didn’t immediPhoto: IMDb ately warm up to it. Unlike it’s tightly plotted predecessor, Lebowski was too loose, too scatterbrained, and too exuberant for its own good. But 15 years of history have rendered a different verdict.

Today, Lebowski-Fests have sprung up all over North America and books such as I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski: Life, The Big Lebowski, and What Have You have been written, dissecting The Dude’s shaggy-mutt approach to life; not bad for a film that only did $17-million at the US box office upon its release.

But maybe its exponential growth in popularity isn’t as surprising as I make it sound.

After all, the Dude abides.

Yukoner starts magazine to promote Vancouver’s underground metal scene

e shouldn’t judge bands such as The Almighty Excruciating Pain, Xenocide and 3 Inches of Blood by how they look and their creepy names.

If we do, we won’t get past the macabre imagery to the tender side, which, according to Whitehorse resident Willow Gamberg, is their creativity and integrity, their musical talent and their storytelling.

“Heavy music is an art form, just like any other, and there are tons of people who are passionate about it, myself included,” Gamberg says. “While lots of the names and themes in the heavier spectrum of this scene may be gory or brutal, the people in it are some of the nicest, coolest, most relaxed people I have ever met in my life.”

Since high school Gamberg has developed an appreciation for — and ability to differentiate between — sludge metal, speed metal, dark metal, doom metal, death metal and blackened death metal.

“I love it for its aggressiveness, emotion, skill level, structures, messages and for the care and time put into it by the musicians,” she says.

Gamberg followed her love of music to Vancouver to pursue the Music Business Administration certification program at Nimbus School of Recording Arts. While studying and writing articles for What’s Up Yukon, Gamberg has also been developing an online magazine to promote the psychedelic and metal rock scene in Vancouver.

She and her business partner Annastasia Fairbanks, a music photographer, realized that Top 40

shows were getting lots of publicity, while the hometown Vancouver musicians were not.

And while the heavy music scene was thriving, it was so insular that it was tricky for anyone not totally dialed in to figure out when the shows were. A scattering of Facebook pages posted announcements for different shows and post-show photos, but they would get lost in the social media drivel.

Fairbanks and Gamberg, both newcomers to Vancouver, where pooh-poohed when they asked about local metal.

“The scene was also kind of elitist and people were like, ‘Oh, it’s not really your scene,’” Gamberg says.

But it is their scene, and in January they launched the magazine Not Your Scene, which welcomes anyone with an interest in the genre.

“Fans are people from all walks of life, from 20-year-old girls to 50-year-old Beard-os,” Gamberg says.

The site, www.NotYourScene. ca, features a calendar of shows; photos and videos from past shows; interviews with bands; and the team’s favourite songs.

They now have of nine contributors and 372 followers on their Facebook page.

Gamberg recognizes that some people are turned off by the imagery of spilled blood and demons, and can be spooked by tough-looking guys with showcase beards screaming into a microphone.

“This is another reason exactly why we wanted to start this magazine — to show that this scene is not a big, scary evil organization,” She says. “It’s a supportive and passionate community of people that love music with a message.”

They’re doing it for the Anciients, Astrakhan, Bison, Black Wizard; for Haggatha, Baptists, Wiser Fool, Nylithia; for all the other Vancouver heavy music bands and the people who love them.

Fairbanks says they have already been earning the love of fans, bands and promoters.

“Promoters, bands and the venues are really thankful for the free promotion,” Fairbanks says.

And word is spreading. Visitors are coming to their website from around the world.

“We might be exposing people in Europe to the music scene in Vancouver and it’s pretty cool to be able to do that,” Fairbanks says.

Their hope is for everyone, everywhere, to support their local music scene.

“Support the people you grew up beside, who are making a solid effort to make their art,” Fairbanks says.

How Dawson Does All that it Does

hatting with Dawson International Short Film Festival producer Dan Sokolowski at the end of a busy weekend, he made the point that there were approximately 80 volunteers involved in putting the festival on and that they contributed something like 800 hours of their time between last year’s festival and this one.

That’s typical of all the events that take place under the umbrel-

la of the Dawson City Arts Society, of which the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture (KIAC) is the program arm. KIAC has several staff positions, but depends heavily on the willingness of unpaid people to make things work.

It’s also true of major programs that run under the banner of the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA). The KVA also has some permanent employees, and hires a lot of summer staff to run Dia-

mond Tooth Gerties, but many of its special events would not happen if people were not willing to give their time.

For example, the recent Trek Over the Top was a success because of the cooperation between the KVA and the Dawson Sled Dawgs, the local snowmobile association.

The Klondike Sun newspaper, my own volunteer activity, employs a part time office person and a bookkeeper, but many hours of volunteer time by a core group of about five people goes into distribution and subscriptions. Other people produce the copy and photographs that fill up the space around the advertising.

We did a survey a few years ago to find out how many organizations there were in town. The number was around 40, and I’d wager it’s still in that neighbourhood. Not bad for a town of under 2,000 people.

The local Chamber of Commerce sometimes has an office manager and sometimes doesn’t, but it chugs along on the efforts of dedicated business owners who see it as filling a need.

VICTOR HAD A CLOSE SHAVE HE ALMOST WEN’T TO THE GRAVE. VICTOR LIVED TO BE OLD BUT HE LATER LOST HIS SOUL. WHEN HE DIED THE SECOND TIME AROUND THEY PUT POOR VICTOR UNDERGROUND.

Allan Benjamin , one or two summer workers, but dozens of people give their time to billet and feed performers, set up the venue and staff the security, and run the merchandizing and concession booths.

CFYT-FM has a program manager, but runs with many volunteer DJs and a membership of about two dozen.

Recycling in the town would hardly exist without the efforts of the Conservation Klondike Society. It does employ some workers, but when things get out of hand, as they often do, volunteers pitch in to make recycling work.

The Dawson Humane Society operates the animal shelter and cooperates with the town’s bylaw department to look after strays and abandoned animals.

The recently completed Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race ran smoothly because the organizers tapped a lot of volunteers, and many of the same people were on hand to make sure the Yukon Quest made it past the halfway point without any problems.

All of these organizations have governing boards that are completely volunteer based, and some people serve on more than one of them.

Dawson runs on volunteer efforts, and as a result, the place is the effective community that it is.

After 32 years teaching in rural Yukon schools, Dan Davidson retired from that profession but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Identity Theft, Part 2

et’s consider what to do if you think your identity has been stolen and how to reduce the chance of that happening.

The first step is to call your bank and credit card company as soon as possible. Tell them why you think that you’re an identity theft victim and get their suggestions. They deal with this frequently and they are experts.

Different banks and credit card companies will have different procedures. In most cases, they will freeze the accounts in question to prevent further loss.

Next, contact the police. Identity theft is a crime and you will often need police involvement as

a requirement of your bank.

In the worst case, you may need to hire a lawyer to help deal with the banks. This is usually only required in cases of a major loss, for example, if someone has used your identity to sell your house or take out another large mortgage.

A lawyer may also be helpful in dealing with the paperwork involved to prove that you were not the one responsible for purchases or accounts.

However, prevention is a lot easier than dealing with the consequences later. Here are some simple steps you can take.

The first is to get a locking mailbox. This prevents thieves from stealing bills or credit card

Credit card safety on the internet. statements for the purposes of obtaining your personal information or preventing you from dis-

covering that bills are being rung up in your name. They aren’t very expensive.

Another low-cost step is to purchase a shredder. Any mail that personally identifies you and can be used to impersonate you should be destroyed. An effective shredder can be found for about $20.

Care should also be taken with financial websites you log onto for business purposes. Be sure to check the address bar on your web browser to ensure you are logging onto the correct site, and not an illegitimate, but very convincing copy.

Take steps to prevent phishing.

The main aim of phishing sites (see What’s Up Yukon, October 25) is to gain information to be used by identity thieves.

Obtain a copy of your credit history once a year. This will let you know what credit is in your name and the companies that have checked your credit report.

The two main credit bureaus in Canada, Equifax and Transunion, will both provide a free copy of your credit report by mail. Forms are available on each of their websites, but make sure you are on their Canadian websites. Look for entries that you do not recog-

nize or seem odd.

If something does happen, don’t panic. Taking steps quickly is important to limit the inconvenience that will arise from identity theft. Remember that the law, although it can move slowly at times, is on your side.

hen you think of tigers you think of a steaming jungle — black stripes mimicking a tangle of branches and shadows, hiding one of the largest predators in the world.

Now place that creature on a white background of snow and it’s disconcerting and out of context.

That’s the Siberian Tiger when it’s at home.

If you’ve ever seen a bear in the winter, it triggers a similar feeling — it’s unexpected and frightening to our northwestern sensibilities.

For those living in the forests of the eastern edge of Asia, the Siberian Tiger has been a part of their winter reality for many generations.

On April 21 author John Vaillant will present the free lecture, “Ten Lessons from a Tiger” at the Yukon Arts Centre. It will explore how the ancient relationship between humans and Siberian Tigers can illuminate how we interact with the natural world around us.

Like humans, tigers are apex predators with a strong sense of entitlement to their territory. In his latest book, The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival, Vaillant discovered that these intelligent animals have some things to teach us about diet, resource management, and getting along with others.

The Tiger took three years to research and write and included two extended trips to China and the Russian Far East, the last stronghold of the Siberian (Amur) Tiger.

In the course of his investigations, Vaillant interviewed biologists and hunters, poachers and wardens, conservationists and indigenous Russians, all of whom share their forest home with Amur Tigers, which can weigh up to 600

Vaillant was surprised to find that, rather than being seen as fearsome, alien beings, local Russians saw their tigers as being not all that different from them in terms of their basic needs and attitudes.

language media resource, there was no way for minority communities to access news in their language.

Furthermore, the Whitehorse collection of francophone books wasn’t mind blowing and they were pretty much nonexistent in the communities.

Cécile Girard has worked for the newspaper since its very beginning and has been its director since 1988. She recalls tales of a Francophone mine worker who came across an edition of l’Aurore Boréale, after not having been able to read a single word of French in more than 20 years.

In the beginning the publication had extremely limited resources. No training or technology

“The paper has always had an

incredibly dedicated and talented team,” says Girard. “There are only three of us, but no one is here for a traditional 9-to-5 job.

The employees’ devotion in time and energy is out of the ordinary.

We work for the paper because we believe in what we do and in the role we play.”

The written press is becoming an endangered species. The advertisement niche market for l’Aurore Boréale is only a small percentage of what local Anglophone papers can dig into. Although financial pressures tend to hit minority papers harder, Girard remains confident about the fu-

n 1983, the very first edition of l’Aurore Boréale came out. It was a single-page newsletter distributed to the members of the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY).

Just a few years later, l’Aurore Boréale changed its look and its mandate. With a new editorial policy to dissociate the AFY from the paper’s content, it also took on the tabloid appearance it still has today. This year, the newspaper celebrates 30 years of bringing news and giving a voice to a community throughout the territory — for free and en français.

When l’Aurore Boréale was created, part of its mandate was educational. There was a real desire among Francophone Yukoners to read in their own language. Before the internet became an all-

IPAs explained

I

’m an unapologetic hophead, and consider no beer too hoppy to drink. I love the constricting bitterness. I love the resiny, citrusy, nostril-doping snort of a good, hop-filled American-style India Pale Ale (IPA).

I wasn’t always this way. If you handed me an Ice Fog IPA 20 years ago I would have pawned it off on someone else. It would have been too bitter, too weird, too dissimilar to Molson Canadian. But people are allowed to change.

Now I’ve seen the light. Hops are an essential ingredient in most beers. Rightly so, because they actually protect beer from contamination. This is one of the reasons hop use spread and took hold across the brewing world.

Of course, the English ban on hop substitutes in 1710 also helped.

In 18th century England, the Industrial Revolution was changing the face of brewing. It was moving out of the pubs and into lar-

ger commercial enterprises.

For the first time, beer was being exported en masse to far-flung nations. The use of hops allowed barrels of beer to arrive relatively drinkable after a long sea voyage.

English sailors benefited from the transportability of beer. Some received rations of a gallon of beer per day because stored water tended to become brackish. By the 18th century, England was shipping beer to all its colonies: America, Australia, the West Indies and India. Among the beers shipped to India was a highly hopped pale ale that survived the six-month sea voyage quite well. The “India” part of the name came later in the early 1800s as this exported beer style grew in popularity.

PHOTO : Lara Lewis We are lucky enough to have a few IPAs available at the local liquor store: Hop Head by Tree Brewing in Kelowna, Ice Fog by Yukon Brewing, and Fat Tug by Driftwood Brewing out of Victoria. Most beer aficionados will have already tried the first two.

Ice Fog is a malty IPA with lower hopping rates than many American examples.

Hop Head is a little more hop-forward. Both of these beers are good starters for

the style if hops aren’t really your thing.

Fat Tug IPA is an excellent example of an American-style IPA. The citrusy hops come through in the aroma. There is just enough residual sweetness from the malt to balance the bittering hops. It is drier (less sweet) than Ice Fog or Hop Head and is more bitter.

The International Bittering Units (IBUs), which measure the bitterness of the beer, are printed on the label. Fat Tug clocks in at 80 IBUs. In comparison, Hop Head is 64 IBUs and a beer like Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale is around 20.

By the way, Alexander Keith’s is NOT an IPA — and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Carries Stories of the Arctic’s Past

“L

iterally, the first day we had the ship a guy knocked on the door,” says Bruce Macdonald, owner and inhabitant of the North Star of Herschel Island. “And since then, we’ve had people knock on the boat almost everywhere we’ve gone.”

The boat in question is the oldest tall ship in Canada that still sails.

“The ship was built in 1935 when the rest of the country was standing in bread lines during the Great Depression,” Macdonald says, with much passion for the boat.

The North Star was an Inuit fur-trading vessel launched from the tip of Herschel Island, which is five kilometres off the north coast of Yukon in the Beaufort Sea. “The Inuit of the Western Arctic were making so much money with the white fox trade that they were able to order in high-powered rifles and washing machines... the top trappers were able to afford these vessels [when no one else at the time could],” Macdonald says.

Living on the North Star, Macdonald found that visitors were often enthusiastic to share their stories of the ship; memories of her in the Arctic; or sailing through storms on the Beaufort Sea. There were even stories from people born on the ship who remembered it as small children.

“I started writing these stories down,” Macdonald says. “The more stories I got the more I realized there was a book here.”

So began the impetus for his book, aptly named North Star of Herschel Island. As he puts it in his book, “We had not just purchased a boat, but a floating museum and a living treasure of the Canadian Arctic fur trade.”

Macdonald would come to witness the deep connection stirred in those that board and see it first hand. After his family claimed the North Star as their home, Macdonald ventured north to visit others who had been onboard his floating relic. In the Northwest Territories he shared stories with the Inuit elders of the community. He also found a refreshing and unexpected receptiveness to his little boat among the generation of young Inuit.

“After the residential schools, the kids were taken out of their homes and lost their language and culture and some of their history,” Macdonald says. “I was afraid that there wouldn’t be any interest and it was the exact opposite.”

Macdonald learned that the youth were taking interest in their culture and history and the elders were teaching such skills as sewing fur and hunting again. This gave Macdonald hope that the history of the North Star of Herschel Island had connected with the youth and that the ship had earned a place in the minds of this new generation.

“I would be very happy if when we finally sell [the North Star] that she went back up North,” Macdonald says. “That would be totally appropriate.”

For now, the Macdonald family is happy to be living on their floating museum. Their first weekend on the boat was meant as a test for her livability, and it passed; Macdonald’s youngest child was smitten with the experience.

“She said, ‘Do we have to go back to the house’,” Macdonald says with a laugh. He knew they had found their new home.

“The rigging is like a playground,” he says. “They can climb around on it and there are even little boats they can go around in.”

And while there are other perks, too, such as having a “whole ocean paradise” to themselves, the family soon discovered living on a vessel isn’t all roses and unicorns. The furthest you can separate feuding parties is about 40 or 50 feet, and a limited supply of heat from a manually fed wood stove means that sacrifices are abundant.

“It’s living very conservatively and very environmentally,” Macdonald says. “Every drop of water you have to plan for. You have to be very mindful of [how you live].”

The most harrowing experience, though, came during a peaceful day on the coast.

“We were out in a flat calm... and suddenly we were in these waves that were breaking over the stern and over the bow; it was like being in a washing machine,” Macdonald remembers. “We were being thrown backwards and forwards and didn’t know what was going on. We were dipping our rails and had these huge waves all around us.

“When we finally got into port, the Coast Guard said that we had sailed over an earthquake.”

Macdonald and his family are based in Victoria, B.C. and share the North Star’s adventures with school group tours and historical societies with the goal of educating people about Arctic history.

Communicating Through Art

In conversation with three creative arts therapists

T

hroughout his work, Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche expressed concern with (lambasted, even) people’s preoccupation with language, a system he saw as insufficient to express the complexity and depth of human experience.

In his 1873 notes for his incomplete book, Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks, Nietzsche wrote, “Words are but symbols for the relations of things to one another and to us; nowhere do they touch upon absolute truth...

Through words and concepts we shall never reach beyond the wall of relations, to some sort of fabulous primal ground of things.”

The “fabulous primal ground

of things” sounds like a place to discover and express — where ritual, play and creativity can spring forth. If the expression of the mind and human experience is limited by words, then what other expressive avenues are available?

And, if we seek to heal the mind, spirit and body, what therapeutic techniques are available besides talking and talking and talking?

Recently, I had a conversation with three Whitehorse therapists and caught a glimpse of a “fabulous primal ground of things” as a therapeutic base for wordless acts such as dancing, drumming, drawing, and playing.

“Sometimes creative arts therapies can go to places where

people don’t have words,” says creative arts therapist Louise Hardy, MA. “The client has images, sounds, sights and they need time to allow for those to come out, and to be able to have [a record of these sensations] as an object outside themselves in order to do the analytical work of what may have happened to them.

“Therapies validate the irrational; often distress is expressed in unhelpful behaviours that don’t seem to make sense and are not healing. Expression through movement, stories, music and art often allow trauma or old memories to surface in ways that become visible. The therapeutic aspect is created and supported by the therapist who keeps the expressive process safe and confidential.”

Hardy suggests creative arts therapies act can heal not just individuals, but communities as well, especially in commemorative or grieving contexts.

Hardy, and her colleagues, stress there is a need in our society to change attitudes towards mental health. “(We wish) to normalize seeking mental health support and to recognize that therapy is engaging, creative and profound,” says Hardy. “Then we can start to make sense of fear or other reactions and impulses that seem to drive or control our lives.”

Leona Corniere, registered psychologist, specializes in the evidence-based practice of play therapy for children. She also underlines the importance of nonlingual expression.

“Many adults seek help through talk therapy,” Corniere says. “For children, especially young children, talking isn’t what they do.

They play — it is their language and the power of play is phenomenal. The therapy room becomes a safe place for the child.”

Corniere also notes when working with children, you work with their parents and guardians too, and language comes into play (pun intended) when caregivers, child and therapist join together to discuss the child’s process.

Mark Kelly, MEd, is a photo therapist who uses personal and historic photos, self-portraiture and photo recreation with his clients. He identifies financial restraints (waitlists for free services can be long), lack of instant results, and stigma around mental health as barriers to seeking help through creative art therapies.

“Seeking counselling is an ex-

pression of strength, not of weakness,” Kelly says. “You are in the best place to help your community if you are in a healthy place yourself. It’s not about being selfishly motivated, but it is about being a good person for your community.”

Hardy, Corniere, and Kelly all emphasize the importance of seeing a trained creative arts therapist.

“It is an absolute honour to be going to our capital alongside so many talented people from across the North,” she says.

Shorty is an actor, storyteller and playwright, but is perhaps best known for her beloved character Gramma Susie, who often appears alongside Cash Creek Charlie to bring humour to the community. Last year, Sharon and Duane Ghastant’ Aucoin (Charlie) were awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for their significant public service.

A member of the Teslin Tlingit Council, Raven Clan, Shorty draws upon the strong tradition of storytelling in her heritage as she travels the world performing. Though she is a comic, she is not afraid of tackling tough subjects. Her recent work included a performance at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, as well as a play exploring the difficulty of aging. Shorty also ran for City Council in 2012.

Shorty is not yet sure what she’ll bring to the audience in Ottawa, but she’s certain there will be a few chuckles. After Ottawa she’s off to Australia in May to participate in the First Nations Australia Writers Workshop as both a performer and a presenter.

F

or Whitehorse-based theatre artist Brian Fidler, the desire to perform dates way back.

“I can trace it to third grade,” he says. “Our teacher would get us to read stories we’d written in front of the class and I loved getting a reaction.”

Shortly thereafter he knew he had to make it in the theatre industry or die trying.

“I made a vow to myself that this is what I would do with my life,” says Fidler.

And that’s exactly what he’s done.

Since moving to Whitehorse in 1998, Fidler has been involved in a string of successful theatre projects including the puppet show Cam and Legs, the burlesque cabaret Varietease, and his highly personal Broken, about Alzheimer’s disease. He also directed the (cough, cough) critically acclaimed play Syphilis: A Love Story.

Then there’s Sci-fi Double Feature, which Fidler and co-creator Edward Westerhuis of Surrey, B.C. will be taking to Ottawa this spring as part of Northern Scene.

Sci-fi includes “Attack of the Slime-a-Trons,” about an intergalactic alien invasion and “Last Day on Earth,” a time-travel epic about the search for a three-headed dinosaur. It was first mounted in December 2011, and then again earlier this year.

“It’s a cardboard puppet show,” says Fidler.

But it’s more than that.

Fidler allows the audience to watch the puppeteers create the piece, but the final product is also simultaneously filmed and projected for viewers.

It is a “making of” documentary and a feature presentation in unison.

“I was watching a ton of these old sci-fi films,” he says. “But then I started to wonder what it would be like to peek behind the scenes at how they are made,” Fidler says. “It’s been fun to put together and its appeal has been very broad.”

n early spring it is very hard not to dream of the summer growing season.

Gardeners who want an early start often start plants indoors.

These are usually the heat-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers.

With our very short growing season it is to the Yukon gardener’s advantage to start other plants as well — every little bit counts.

Lettuce can be grown on the windowsill and enjoyed long before the snow is gone. Just start it once the days begin to get longer.

Otherwise, it will stretch out to find the light and there won’t be much leaf to harvest.

Most herbs also benefit from a head start. Some can even be enjoyed year round if they are planted in a pot and only moved outside during the summer.

Long-season crops like onions and cabbages benefit from the extra time as well.

A gardener would be wise to plot their garden on paper. By making a map of the area to be planted and marking where last year’s vegetables were, it is pos-

sible to rotate crops around.

Crop rotation is a term is usually applied to large tracts of farmland. But the same method can be used for backyard gardeners.

It’s an age-old method of avoiding disease build-up in the soil and keeping a step ahead of any insects that have wintered at the roots of last year’s plants. It also prevents the soil from being depleted of the same micronutrients year after year. Consider adding a rest year, or summer fallow, into the plot rotation.

As long as similar plants are kept together, this works. Cabbage pests and diseases will also prey on broccoli, radishes and turnips. By keeping these crops close to each other in the garden they will be easier to move (on paper) as a group.

Peas and beans, in combination with bacteria in the soil, will take nitrogen out of the air and fix it in nodules on the plant roots. If the roots are allowed to remain in the soil to break down, the nitrogen becomes available to other plants the following season.

rotation you could keep root crops in one, the cabbage family in another and peas or beans in a third.

Or it could be as easy as dividing up the garden into 3 or 4 sections and rotating what is planted on each section.

We have more than one garden so we rotate the different plants from one garden to the next. Sometimes this has it’s own unique challenges because the gardens aren’t all the same size.

But still, crop rotation is a strategy I like to follow.

T

he restaurant might have had a name; I certainly didn’t notice it as we were walking down an ancient cobblestone street in Piacenza, a small city south of Milan. All I remember is all of a sudden being pulled into a brightly-lit room filled with locals noisily enjoying supper.

The tables were small, the walls plain, the ceiling low. It was an intimate place only the locals know.

Our hosts for the weekend had brought us to Piacenza’s old town, in a city and region renowned for its food. Incomprehensible menus were placed before us. Again, we took our cues from our hosts, letting them order for us.

We were at their delightful mercy.

Before too long huge plates were placed on our table, filled with cured ham, spiced sausage, and strips of what looked like raw bacon. Names like coppa, pancetta, and salame — at least the last name was familiar, but it tasted like no salami I had had in my life. Intermingled were cheeses, crackers and bread, with exotic names and fla-

vours I had never tried before. Washed down with wonderful red wine that effortlessly matched the food.

And all of it was local — produced a few miles, at most, from the restaurant. All of it the product of literally thousands of years of testing, experimenting, and perfecting what could be done with the meat of the humble pig.

I can’t really describe what we ate next. Plate upon plate of different meats, sauces, pastas. You quickly realize spaghetti and lasagna are the smallest tip of a very large iceberg that is Italian cuisine. I can say, though, that among the dishes was the best horse and donkey meat I have ever tried (and am likely to ever try again).

And it was all mixed together with that most fundamental of spices — human interaction. We didn’t speak a word of Italian, but were soon drawn into the laughter and songs we heard that night. This was a family restaurant, in the old sense of the word — a mix of little kids playing with toys, grandparents quietly enjoying a glass of wine,

young lovers courting, and everyone in between having a good, noisy time.

We learned a lot that weekend from our hosts, who lived in a small village outside Piacenza. From their hillside home they pointed to rolling hills spreading far and away. At that one, they said, locals make a kind of blue cheese; another kind was made over there, a few kilometres away. They make one kind of wine on that hillside, and the pizza on that hill is different from the pizza in the valley below.

It was overwhelming and awe-inspiring. Micro-farms and hyper-local producers meant a universe of foods can be explored — foods that you will never find in Canada, or in the rest of Europe, or even in other parts of northern Italy. They are out there, and I would love the opportunity to seek them out again.

One Hundred of the U.S.’s best skiers were behind me and I was second only to one.

Confidence high, I went into the next race looking for another podium. However, I couldn’t hold on to the lead pack and I fell back a few positions.

The next day we raced the classic sprint.

I qualified in 19th and moved up to 8th in the heats. Not too shabby for such a competitive field.

he National Championships continued on March 26 with a 15km classic race. Our wax tech, Alain, nailed the skies and the Yukon had one of its best days ever at the Nationals: six medals.

I continued racing in top form and made the A final in the classic sprint. I got to enjoy a muchneeded day of rest before the 50km skate race.

During that race, the course turned from ice to slush in the two hours and 10 minutes it took to complete. At about 30 kilometres my legs started to cramp up, a feeling I would compare to walking on stilts with a really bad head rush. I finished, but I can’t say much else.

Nationals were over but skiing wasn’t over yet, not for me anyway. I changed my plane ticket at the last minute and hitched a ride down to California.

I made my way through Washington, Oregon, and Nevada, all the way to Truckee, California where I checked into a hotel.

The final race of the weekend was a hill climb. At a downhill resort we scrambled our way up the 45-degree mountain slopes in blizzard conditions. Moving that slowly and breathing that hard is rather humiliating and I was never so happy to flop down over the finish line.

Between races I’ve been scrambling to find out how I’m getting to the race site; where I will stay; how I’m getting home; and how I’ll pay for it all. Maybe I’ll catch a bus to Vancouver, maybe a train, or perhaps I’ll find a cheap flight.

Not knowing where I’m going, or what I’m doing is becoming a familiar feeling. One thing’s for sure, I can’t wait to come home in time to go ice fishing.

Night Lights with James Cackette

e have been watching Comet PanSTARRS for the last week and it has been fascinating to see it change.

When the comet first appeared high enough in the night sky to be seen, around the third week in March, it was quite easy to view with the unaided eye, from my front porch with local streetlights on. By April 4 the comet could barely be seen without binoculars.

On April 4 the comet was only three degrees away from the Andromeda Galaxy. This is very rare.

I have never tried to photograph a galaxy and a comet at the same

time before.

Where is the best location to do this? Did I hear someone say road trip?

The choice was simple: head west-northwest and look for a nice clean plateau to set up the camera and binoculars. I headed out on the old Alaska Highway towards Fairbanks about 50 kilometres and found a perfect open patch just off the emergency lane on the highway.

Arriving there was an adventure. When the road sign says, “Slow down, there is a bump ahead,” it is not kidding.

Upon arrival there was not a single star to be seen and the sun was still illuminating the distant razor-sharp mountain peaks from behind, making for an incredible sight.

By 9:30 p.m. Jupiter was out, but by 10:30 p.m. I was beginning to wonder if I had picked the right location. It turns out my location was better than I had first realized. By 11:30 p.m. the constellation Andromeda and the comet were visible through binoculars.

As I waited for the sky to darken on the northwestern horizon I took a quick sky tour. What an amaz-

ing dark sky. You could see stars from horizon to horizon. Orion was floating across the distant mountain peaks, ever so slowly heading out of view.

There was no moonlight, which made for fabulous observing conditions. Even through my trusty 10x50 binoculars there was plenty to see: galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters aplenty, even the constellation Lyra was rising off the far horizon.

Now it was time to shoot. First we setup the gear, next we ran a couple of wide-angle shots for test purposes. Because I only had my photo tripod, I did not know quite what to expect.

We loaded the 100 — 400 mm telephoto lens and stepped up the power to 200mm and that seemed

about the most I could do, even at ISO 6400 for 20 seconds. Still, looking at the comet and the galaxy side-by-side was awesome and photographing it was a privilege.

The next two hours were spent experimenting with different ISO, shutter speeds, and F-stops — trying to find the best combination.

It looked like I had at least a few good shots so it was time to wrap it up. It was around -20°C, with a stiff wind. Even with a parka, gloves, and a toque, I was starting to freeze.

I was about to take my camera off the tripod when I caught glimmer of aurora struggling to put on a show. It was not a strong display but I had a foreground that made for excellent photographs.

It was now well after 2 a.m. and I still had the drive home to contend with. One more surprise awaited.

The next day, as I was cleaning up my photos I noticed that I captured a low flying meteor or fireball very close to the horizon.

Outstanding!

Comet PanSTARRS will be an easy binocular target for the next couple of weeks, so take some time and a star chart and check it out for yourself.
