AThis spring in Whitehorse, Haines Junction, Atlin and Dawson City, Larrikin Entertainment will present the world premier of Jenny Hamilton – Teenage Cult Leader—a one-woman (plus one more woman) comedy stage play with puppets, animation and live music

fter working as a writer and stage manager on Larrikin Entertainment’s production of WYRD: a Musical Unfairytale, last year, Jenny Hamilton was approached by artistic executive director Katherine McCallum, who asked Hamilton if she would lead the company’s next production.

“I understood her process, her dedication and her love of new work,” said Hamilton. “I agreed to be the creator of the upcoming season’s show. This was an opportunity I just could not pass up.”

Hamilton got down to work, going with the ethos of “write what you know.”

“What I know best is me,” she said. “This piece is a memoir of my first eighteen years. It started as a storytelling piece, but after many drafts and consultation with my dramaturges/director Clinton

Walker, the piece really wanted to go from narration to dialogue—literally changing the way it needed to be presented.”

As one could imagine, the process has been nothing but busy for Hamilton. While she’s grateful for the team she’s working with and has enjoyed the process, it hasn’t been without its challenges, and there’s been no shortage of work to do.

“There are so many incredible parts of this production process,” said Hamilton. “Having no restrictions in vision has been a gift. Kat said, ‘Write what you want and we will do our best to get you what you need—comedy, animation, live music and puppets! We have them all!’ I am so amazed at the support of Kat and Larrikin for my vision of this show.”

As far as the challenges go, Hamilton said that since she chose the elements of the show, the challenges are her own making.

“Comedy? I can do that! Live music? It’s been a few decades or more but, yeah, I can dust off that part of me. Puppetry? Alright, I will go learn this skill. Animation? Okay, time to bring in a professional,” she said with a laugh. “And we did. Andrew Sharp [animator] is incredible. We actually went to high school together here in Whitehorse, way back in the day, so he understood the feel of the time and place I am writing about, because he was there.

“What do I want the audience to take away after seeing this show? Merchandise! Ha!

I want the audience to be entertained! Maybe they will relate, maybe they will not. Either way, I want us to have fun! I am doing things in this show I haven’t done in years, or have never done before. That alone is worth coming

to see.”

While Hamilton recognizes that the success of the show ultimately rides on her, as the writer, saying a show is only as good as its writing, she doesn’t shy away from shouting out the team she’s working with, consisting (in addition to herself, Walker and Sharp) of musical director and composer Ashley Robyn, lighting designer Patrick Matheson, set designer Dan Bushnell and costume designer Kaori Torigai.

“Having a team of incredibly talented people has been amazing,” Hamilton said. “They have added to this show in ways I just could not have, all by myself. Having them contribute has also set a higher bar for me to keep up with their abilities. I can’t be the weak link here! My name is the biggest on the poster! They have kept me humble and focused on the work.”

Most of the team is made up of people that Hamilton has worked with before or has known for years, and having a group of people who understand, respect and admire each other’s work has made the process of putting together this show a much smoother endeavour.

Hamilton met Robyn during the creation of WYRD and vowed to work with her any chance she got.

“She understands music—all music,” said Hamilton. “I have written lyrics for so many different kinds of songs; she was the person I knew could write the music to it all. She is also one of my favourite people in general.”

Sharp is an old-school style animator, and Hamilton said she could watch his work every day.

“I am a huge fan! I love his work,” she exclaimed. “I had to have his talent in the show. He cont’d on page 3 ...

creates into reality what my brain can only imagine, and then he makes my thoughts even better. His contribution to the show has allowed me to go places that dialogue alone just can’t.”

Hamilton hails Matheson as the best in the business. She’s worked with him many times in the past, as a tech director or stage manager.

“He is brilliant,” Hamilton said. “He literally designs the lights into a supporting character in all the work he does. He elevates shows! I am so happy he will be lighting my life onstage.”

Bushnell is a friend of Hamilton’s whom she calls a genius and an artist in his own right. “He has set this stage as only he could,” she said. “He knows me, and has since high school, so he understands exactly where this show takes place. His vision and artistry is unique and yet relatable. I am truly blessed he made time to create a space for me to play on.”

Another long-time friend of Hamilton’s is Torigai, whom she met at the Guild, years ago, and the two became fast friends.

“I watched Kaori create costumes and then dress actors for multiple shows over those years,” Hamilton said. “Her eye for colour and style is incredible. I have challenged her with this production by asking her to dress me. She said ‘No problem.’ [Costume design is] a feat I have struggled with my whole life. So then I also said, ‘I also need you to dress some puppets.’ She replied with so much excitement [that] I knew she was our designer.”

Walker is another friend of Hamilton’s that she worked with many times at the Guild Hall, when she was the general man-

ager of the theatre.

portant, early years.

“It was always as a crew member, though,” she said. “I watched him work with so many local actors, of all skill levels, and every time he helped them rise to new heights in their performances. He is incredibly intelligent and creative; he is everything I wanted in a director and dramaturges. I was over the moon when he was available and excited to be a part.”

The show opens at the Old Fire Hall in Whitehorse March 14 to 23, with shows each night at 8 p.m., and a Saturday matinee at

Finding ease and enjoyment in day-to-day activities

We become our own biggest enemy as we age because we keep trying to do things how we used to do them and we strain or hurt

ourselves. After a few repeats, we just stop doing some of them or learn a way to get the task done without all of the discomfort or pain. In Part 1, I described a number of handy tools/implements which really ease the task. The following is a further list and added info on those items that may need more explanation.

• Pantry, bathroom closet, etc., rearranged so that frequently-

used items are at the front and near to the middle of the space

• Long shoehorns inside all exit doors

• Adhesive tape around exterior door knobs, or use lever handles (arthritic hands)

• Grab rails beside toilets and at shower entry

• A chair, with arms, at the dinner table (helps to stand up)

• Screwed-down, non-slip strips on exterior steps

• Battery-powered stair lights with remote on/off

• Ice-melt on steps and outside access leading to exterior doors

• Lamp, phone and LED light on bedside table

• Magnetized LED lights on metal doors and fridge

• Can/jar lid-opening device (arthritic hands)

• Accessory handle to assist entry and exit to and from vehicle

• Non-slip interior footwear

• Scissors with big finger holes (arthritic hands)

• Power fruit and potato peeler (arthritic hands)

• Slip-on ice cleats (chain type that won’t damage wooden steps)

• A cane with flip-style ice tip (keep in vehicle)

• Eagerness to accept assistance if offered

Aging, injury and ill health can and usually do bring some reduction in our physical capabilities. The items in this and the previous list (see Part 1) can all help us to ease some of the challenges in our daily routine. n

Shane McGowan has died

Whether or not you enjoyed the music, he fronted the Anglo-Irish punk band, The Pogues.

Wikipedia says their music was pretty edgy. Considering the history of the band’s name, that’s

not really surprising.

My interest in The Pogues got twigged when we were shopping in Galway, Ireland, in 2010. I was looking for the perfect Blackthorn cane. Some Irish friends of mine called it a Shillelagh, a walking

stick (or a club, depending on your personality and temperament).

Somehow my parents had come into possession of a Blackthorn cane belonging to one of my dad’s older brothers. It had been given to him by the nurses at a convalescent hospital in Ireland where he had spent some time recovering from injuries sustained in WWII.

Since then, I had always wanted a Blackthorn. Turns out that every tourist-oriented shop in Ireland has a barrel of these things for sale. And no wonder: they’re lighter than aluminum and immensely strong. And they have a knobbly old-guy character. Perhaps it suits me, hey? I found one. Perfect.

More importantly, in the next aisle there was a stash of some curious North American–style vanity license plates reading Póg Mo Thóin. And here’s where it connects to Shane McGowan and The Pogues: The original name of the band was Pogue Mahone. “The Beeb” (the BBC), in censorship mode, would not allow their music to be played as Pogue Mahone, so they had to change the name.

And I, having found out the backstory from a salesperson (and now, understanding that these were rude license plates), could not resist buying a pair.

It looks funny on my Smart Car, which inspired this comment by an Irishwoman: “Are you allowed to do that in the Yukon?” My vintage 3-tonner got the other plate, and

I was picking up a load of compost from the City’s pile at the dump when the Irish guy in charge commented, “Paddy, are ye?”

Póg Mo Thóin (pronounced “Pogue Mahone”) is “Kiss me arse,” in Irish.

Irish people get it, whether they’re amused or offended. If you’re amused … well, kiss me (I’m sorta Irish).

Otherwise, I hope you’ve paid attention. n

DJENT IS NOT A GENRE

REVIEW

Band: Periphery

Album:

Djent Is Not A Genre

Year: 2023

Genre: Progressive Metal

Periphery is an American progressive metal band known for their complex compositions and technical prowess. Formed in 2005, they’ve released several albums and EPs, gaining acclaim for their innovative approach to metal music. Led by guitarist Misha Mansoor, they’re influential in the “djent” movement and have a big, dedicated fanbase within the progressive metal community.

Djent Is Not A Genre was pretty much what I expected from a bunch of super-talented musicians! It’s awesome to see how they’ve influenced so many young folks to pick up instruments again. I mean, just look at their massive following—each band member and the band itself have legions of fans!

Sure, the album follows a bit of a formula, but they manage to spice things up enough to keep it from getting boring. That’s not something you see every day, no

matter what kind of music you’re into.

And let’s talk about “Wax Wings.” Seriously, do yourself a favour and give it a listen. The way it was composed is just perfect; I mean, It has everything— screams, amazing vocal arrangements, an incredible virtuous solo and, of course, all the power a band made of three guitar players can have!

Sit back, relax and let the music take you on a journey. Trust me, it’s worth it.

The only reason I wouldn’t rate this album a perfect 10 is because of “Everything is Fine.” To me, it felt like a mishmash of different ideas that the band members had, lacking the cohesion found in the rest of the album.

If you are into metal, and progressive rock, you can find albums like this one and more at Triple J’s Vinyl Boutique!

KIAC STILL GOING

The Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture annual Dawson City International Short Film Festival takes place this year from March 28 to 31

It’s a milestone year for the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture (KIAC)’s Dawson City International Short Film Festival. This year, the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary, and since it always takes place over Easter weekend, it’s earlier this year than it typically is.

“It’s earlier this year, so the date is quite important,” said KIAC film festival producer, Dan Sokolowski. “That sometimes catches people by surprise, so we’re trying to get the word out that it’s earlier than usual.”

This year, over 400 films were submitted for consideration for the festival, so Sokolowski and his selection committee have been hard at work watching each film and deciding what is right for the

film festival audiences, as well as planning workshops to happen during the weekend.

“There’s a lot of interest in analogue filmmaking up here in Dawson,” said Sokolowski. “Once again at the festival, we’re going to have workshops that cover both ends of the cinematic gamut, with some analog filmmaking workshops as well as some digital filmmaking workshops.”

Sokolowski isn’t exactly sure why analog filmmaking is such a popular phenomenon in Dawson City but is happy to offer a supply for the demand. KIAC has the necessary equipment to run these workshops where prospective filmmakers can learn to shoot with Super 8 and other technologies.

“I think because we can process it ourselves, it takes away that mystique of having to send it out and waiting and waiting and then getting it back,” he explained. “This way, it’s almost as immediate as digital, where you can shoot it, then go into the dark room and see right away what the image is.

“There’s that immediacy that wasn’t in film before that we can offer, and it’s also very tactile and hands-on. You load the camera with your own fingers, you get to touch the film, you handprocess it in buckets—so there’s

a touchy-feely process that goes along with it and I think people appreciate it—whereas, admit-

ing and almost a new way of filmmaking.”

As far as the selection process

tedly, digital has many good qualities, it’s still a very ‘cold’ medium.

“It’s a different way of think-

for the festival screenings go, Sokolowski said that KIAC’s selection committee is focused on presenting a variety of films that show

diversity in style and content.

“We show a bit of everything at the film fest,” he said. “The selection committee looks at a film to see its message, content, how well it’s portrayed and if it’s an engaging piece of work. Sometimes you get something that maybe isn’t technically as high quality as other things, but the content is relevant, so we look at a wide variety of things we want to see and [that] we think the community might want to see on the screen.”

Sokolowski admitted that celebrating 25 years of the film fest makes him feel a little old, because he attended the firstever Dawson City International Short Film Festival, where one of his own films was screened. At the time, he lived in Ontario and knew nothing of the Yukon’s lure to outsiders.

“It’s [been] a lot of years, and it’s a testament to the community and the support that’s been given to not only the film fest but to KIAC—which is also in its 25th year—that we’re still here and we’re moving ahead,” he said. “It’s really touching, in a way.”

This year’s Dawson City International Short Film Festival takes place March 28–31. To learn more and to see the festival programming, visit dawsonfilmfest.com n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BATTERY

Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure.

Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.

MATERIAL ReCULTURING

CARBON-NEUTRAL HAM AND OTHER STORIES

I have had the good fortune to be selected as an Artist in Residence at Raven ReCentre for two summers now

My work with Zero Waste Yukon seems to be permeating my creative mind. It made me question and explore how I use materials in the context of the material culture we inhabit here together, one with cars and Ziplock bags and grapefruit. I use all these things.

The more I think about these things, the more confused I get. I am, at best, a mediocre environmentalist.

Still, my position as an artist gives me freedom to explore these ideas, as my work leads me to engage with materials all the time. Given the freedom to make what I want, I look around me to see what’s available. When I started working in clay, an instructor often

repeated how important it is to have compassion for the material—not to be angry with it, but to understand what it needs and how to work together with it. Maybe this kind of relationship can be part of changing the problematic parts of our material culture.

We are cut off from the story of materials and making behind most objects we encounter and use. A pencil, a notebook, a slice of ham—I buy them and use them. Folks thinking about environmental issues critique our collective habits and the way our tools and materials are currently designed to work, as following a pattern of “take-makewaste.” We buy things ignorant of their story before we encounter them in the shop. Then we use them and when we’re done with them, we throw them out. We take it for granted that there’s land for a landfill to take the things we’re ready to forget. It becomes somebody else’s problem. This assumption can be seen as colonialist.

I hope to inhabit some of these contradictions in this monthly column and make a place where you can hang out with them, too. One month (like this column), I’ll write from my own reflection and stories, grappling with the challenges

This dress made by Nicole Bauberger of a dirty raspberry jam jar, fired in the kiln, depicts ravens flying over the dump u

of trying to live in a good way in our current environmental times. I’ll write from the bus, from carpooling, from art projects and so on.

I’ll alternate these first-person articles with stories that patch together other people’s reuse stories. Many artists are engaging with these issues, and I will certainly write about them because I love to write about art. But I am equally interested in stories from people’s lives. In residence at Raven, I found that people wanted to tell me about the little things they dig, the ways they found to reuse plastic bottles to keep snow out of the outlets to plug-in their cars, and so on. What are you doing? If you have a story like this to share with me, please email it to materialreculturing@gmail.com. It might take awhile for me to get back to you … Please have patience with me.

I promised you carbon-neutral ham, though.

So I was coming out of the In-

dependent, packing my groceries to my truck. I had just read The Carbon Footprint of Everything, by Mike Berners-Lee. It’s a good book, but daunting. If you’re concerned with carbon, a plastic

shopping bag has less impact than paper. But microplastics! Etcetera, etcetera! Anyway, my head was spinning and it was clear from

Carbon-neutral ham and other stories cont’d from page 18

p This detail shows the ravens within and flying beyond the bounds of this experimental plastic painting by Leslie Leong

the book that grocery-store meat and dairy projects were expensive in my carbon footprint. I put my groceries in the trunk and turned towards my driver’s door. Then I spotted a pack of sliced deli ham on the slightly snowy asphalt of the parking lot. It sported a sticker, having been marked down 50 per cent off. I looked around for who might have dropped it, but couldn’t see anyone. It hadn’t been run over or stepped on yet.

t Leslie Leong uses milk cartons in her costume, as well as plastics from the waste stream in the painting behind it

It was in perfect condition. It wasn’t too warm outside … I took it home.

It seemed to me that it was bound for the garbage, so I figured the carbon in it was better served by eating it than letting it go to waste. I’m sure the ravens in the parking lot would have preferred I left it there to get run over, so they could eat it. The edges of the ham slices were a little dry but still very tasty, especially because they were (kind of … at least as far as I figured it) carbon neutral.

When I told this story to my nieces in Ontario, they didn’t think it was a good idea to eat ham that you had picked up off the ground. Irration-

ally, I feel the same way in Ontario. I wonder why it feels different here? Is it because of picking berries?

Diversions, an art exhibition of work drawn from the residencies at Raven ReCentre, over the summer of 2023, continues until February 26 at the Northern Front Studio Annex, in the same building as CHON-FM and Polarity Brewing.

Looking forward to celebrating your stories of ingenious reuse as we all navigate and co-create environmental and cultural changes together. n

KEEPING ‘THE PERCY’ ALIVE!

The spirit of the Percy, which began with the Iron Man of the North, is still alive and well this year

There won’t be a Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race this year, but to keep the idea alive, the smaller-than-usual new board has decided to hold what they’re calling a Fun Mail Run, which will kick off from near the ferry landing at the end of Front Street on March 7 at 10 a.m.

The new race committee this year is so far composed of Dany Jette, John Mitchell and Anthony Da Costa Maia. These three are hoping to recruit a few more, but it’s late in the game to mount a full event this year. There are other volunteers carrying out a variety of tasks, planning logistics and creating the trail.

This last task used to be easier when the Yukon Quest passed by here on the way to Fairbanks, but that hasn’t happened for several years now. Mitchell has been organizing the trail preparation this year and reported this week (as of

February 10) that a trail has been broken out as far as Forty Mile.

“The weather events with the snow and the wind made it a lot smoother and it’s actually pretty good, except for a section around Cassiar Creek,” Mitchell said.

This year’s run will normally follow the Yukon River on the east bank, down to Clinton Creek and west along the Fortymile River. Between COVID restrictions and river conditions, it has not been possible to make the traditional round trip to Eagle, Alaska (and back), since 2019.

The race was created in memory of the route followed by the Iron Man of the North, mail carrier Percy DeWolfe, who carried mail on the river in all seasons from 1915 to 1950.

In other years on this alternate route, it has been the practice to overnight at Forty Mile, but the heritage infrastructure there was wiped out by last spring’s flooding. So this year’s plan is to proceed to Earl Rolf and Sandy Vaisvil’s Clinton Creek Hideaway, where mushers will be able to spend the night.

The next day, mushers will come up the Clinton Creek Road to the Top of the World Highway and make their way back to Dawson on this beautiful scenic route (and hope it’s a nice clear day).

In 2022, the race launched from the Ice Bridge

This year, the new committee has simple goals. The Fun Run (not a race) is to honour the spirit of Percy by having a Fun Mail Run in the Yukon wilderness and to help each other out on the trail. Mushers will be 100 per cent responsible for their own safety and their dogs’ safety throughout the event.

The trail distance is about 130 miles (209 kilometres).

POSTER

The rules are simple: Be safe. Have fun.

(We do encourage running with nine dogs, just as Percy did back in the day, but we won’t be monitoring this at all!)

What will be provided?

River conditions were poor in 2021, so the race began on the Top of the World Highway

The committee has posted the following:

1. A mushers’ meeting, the evening before the race, to provide information and to gather before hitting the trail. And to pick a musher who would potentially carry a small bag of mail.

2. A Start and Finish location where mushers will be able to park their vehicles and hit the trail safely.

3. A marked trail, which we’ll update you on at the mushers’ meeting, because one thing is sure these days—trail conditions change constantly!

4. An event on the evening of Saturday, March 9, to celebrate a fun gathering of mushers and which will also be a fundraiser for the Percy, so we can get back on track to hopefully offer you a proper full-on event next year!

5. We will also try to have a vet at the Finish Line, to help with any possible dog issues.

At this point, the committee has no idea how many teams will turn out for a Fun Run, with no prize money and that isn’t even a qualifying contest for the longer races, but the Percy started out as a Fun Run, back in 1977, and this committee hopes to keep that spirit alive in order to revive the full 210-mile (338-kilometre) race next year. n

The traditional starting point for this race is on King Street, in front of the Palace Grand Theatre, but it has been in other places, depending on COVID and trail conditions

A MUSICAL INTERLUDE

Am I really “all about that bass”?

It was a quiet day, the weather somewhat questionable as it had been for some time. Late January and rain showers do not mix, especially when the temperature is bound to drop 20 degrees before February. I didn’t feel especially inclined to read my book that morning. I wasn’t in the most upbeat mood and had taken to sitting in silence, surrounded by my cats. I was unsure what I wanted to do, but I decided eventually that I would practise playing bass for my band class the coming week. It wasn’t the worst plan; in fact, it was probably fairly responsible of me. But considering I don’t own a bass, it wasn’t a great plan either. And so, I turned to the closest instrument I owned ...

As a 14-year-old girl, I’ve done my fair share of elementaryschool classes. Math, Social Studies, English, French, Religion, Music. I’ve always enjoyed Music class, aside from the time when I cracked my head open falling from the choir bleachers in kindergarten. But that was a long time ago. I probably got to skip the rest of the day, too, so I’m sure I didn’t care all that much. In Music class we got to learn how to play the guitar, the recorder (pre-

COVID), the boom whackers and everyone’s go-to X word, the xylophone. Elementary-school music was a good time. We even got to make our own song using GarageBand in grade 6. It was probably my favourite class, although that was probably because I found it incredibly easy to get good marks, with very little effort.

We went through a few music teachers throughout my elementary-school years; one who taught us all the notes, all the instruments, all the songs for the Christmas Concert; one who brought us tea once a week and held dance parties during class time. And then there was the last one, the one who made us build ukuleles and who referred to themself explicitly in the third person. Don’t get me wrong—this last Music teacher was a great person, and building ukuleles is an interesting thing to do. The problem was that they were trying to teach around 25 different students how to measure, glue and sand their ukuleles at the same time. Not to mention that 12-year-olds don’t tend to have a very long attention span. But then we were threatened with summer school. A lot of people hadn’t even wanted to do this in the first place, but that threat made them get their act somewhat together. We ended up having to stay inside during lunch to work on our ukuleles, giving up our free time to avoid summer school.

One of Aila Massie’s teachers not only taught students how to play the ukulele, but also showed them how to build one

For ukuleles. But hey, avoiding minus 24-degree weather and no teacher supervision? I, for one, was not complaining. Eventually, we all finished our ukuleles. To my surprise, they looked pretty good considering the dedication everyone had lacked. Significantly. They were well-sanded, edges round and smooth. The dark stain we had painstakingly applied everyday was well worth it; they were a deep chestnut colour that brought to mind cozy fireplaces and hot apple cider. They were all tuned perfectly, notes ringing out clearly and harmoniously. Everything was perfect. When the end of the school year came, we all brought our respective ukuleles home. You may think

that our parents would have been annoyed by our loud playing. But do you remember when I said we had also learned how to play the recorder? That wasn’t the only reason that we weren’t spending our days exuberantly strumming our little hearts out, though. We’d spent so long making the ukuleles that we had neglected to actually learn how to play them! So, they sat in our homes, collecting dust, waiting for the opportune moment to shine … Which brings us back to the beginning of my story, which you’ve probably forgotten by now; I

wanted to practise bass but didn’t own a bass, and so turned to the closest instrument I could find. I’m sure you’ve already put the pieces of the puzzle together, so I’ll save the suspense. The instrument in question was my ukulele. After wiping off the layers of grime (I’m exaggerating ... I do clean my room and its contents), I began to play. It was slightly out of tune so I tuned it by ear until it suited my purposes well enough. But it was all for naught because it was a ukulele, not a bass. Maybe that was the treble! n

‘VAMPIRES’ IN OUR MIDST

This column is not for the faint of heart!

Watch out … all furry animals can have fleas (us included).

They bite and suck blood—vampirelike. Cats such as lynx are a haven for fleas, as are fox and ermine, then squirrel and even mice. The little buggers can also be found in bird’s feathers. When you see a cat scratching its ears nearly uninterruptedly, then you know that this parasite is like a plague. The ermine’s coat turns white when the first snow falls and the temperatures drop, so one sees the fleas really well in that fur.

One-hundred years ago, powdered alum was used: it was sprinkled over carpets and rugs and by dipping papers in an alum solution and placing them under rugs. Not having rugs/carpets in your house is a good idea. Before the hygiene craze, people didn’t bathe very often or wash their bed sheets

The dog is ready to roll ... ever so eager to inspect new fur (don’t let him!)

regularly. Enter flea fur: fur from mink, ermine or ferret that was worn around the neck in hopes that fleas would prefer the fur and not human skin.

Fleas are pinhead size, two millimetres long, brown or blackish in colour and—get this!—flat. That makes it hard to grab and squish them. With their large back legs, they can jump impressive distances, up to 16 inches (up to 200 times their own body length!). With their six legs, they can also run. Flea “dirt” looks like dark specks (or black pepper) on skin and fur.

Fleas develop in nests, beds and wherever animals lie down

Adults will mate, then the females will begin laying eggs. A single female flea can hatch 500 eggs in her lifetime. It takes about 14 days for the eggs to develop to the adult stage. Eggs hatch in one to 10 days; after that come the

larva and pupa stages. The eggs are microscopically small, white and oval-shaped. The juvenile stages (eggs, larvae, pupae) are scattered throughout the fur. Fleas can live a year and a half under the right environment, considering temperature, food supply and humidity, but usually for just two to three months. Without a host for food, they’ll survive for just a few days and up to two weeks.

What to do if you and your dog don’t want to host these itchy beasts while trapping

If the furbearer is frozen when you get to it, the fleas should have succumbed to the cold (died), as they need heat (that’s why they just let themselves drop down to a warmer spot/host, from wherever they are at that moment). Having said that, don’t let your dog sniff at the critter from below). If the animal you caught is not frozen yet (especially lynx), it’s a good idea to have a garbage bag with you to wrap it in and take home. Back at your cabin, spray a load of RAID into the bag, close it and leave it for at least 20 minutes. Some fleas might still survive because they’ll go hide where there is still heat and less RAID stink; for instance, in the hairy paws or in the ears.

How do you know you’ve been selected by a flea?

It feels like something tiny is tickling you and your hair on your arm, and it also feels like a hair got stuck in your bosom (women with long hair will know what I’m talking about).

The most common fleas

The most common flea is the cat flea. Dogs will pick up fleas from other dogs or animals. Dogs will have fleas mostly on the back

of the ears, in their groin or inner thighs and base of their tail. Fleas can transmit tapeworms, so also get an effective prescription dewormer besides the vet’s recommended flea treatment. It is crucial to treat your home at the same time as you treat your dog or cat. In spring and summer, fleas cause problems because of the perfect environment. Launder your clothing at a high temperature to eliminate them. Hot water and high heat will kill them. Vacuum, discard the vacuum bag, wash bedding on high heat and use a deterrent spray in your home.

Ouch …

A flea bite will turn extremely itchy; a red and swollen weal will develop within half an hour of being bitten. After about a day, the weal will develop into a blister or a small wound. Fleas usually target your legs or feet. Do not scratch! (infection prevention).

Keeping the little vampires at bay

A natural flea repellent is apple cider vinegar. Fleas hate the smell and taste. Put equal amounts of cider and water in a spray bottle. Plants that deter fleas are mint (too strong of a scent for them), catnip (your cat will love you), rosemary, citronella, cedarwood and marigolds (you’ll notice, those are the same plants that we use to deter Yukon mosquitoes).

Now, the good news …

There are critters who eat fleas: they are ducks, chickens, and insects such as ants and beetles. (So, if you’re all itchy now, get some mint and rosemary seeds and start your lovely-smelling, fleas-will-stay-away herbs!)

MAVERICK’S TRAVEL ADVENTURES

From here to the other side of the world

Maverick is a very lucky boy; his mother (me) is Australian, and a dream, for most, became a reality for him at four months when we went to Australia. Before Maverick was born, my husband Ryan (fiance at the time) was supposed to come with me to visit my entire family

in 2020. So, that didn’t happen. But this time, husband and baby in tow, the baby was much more the star of the show.

However, I didn’t want to just visit my family. I wanted to mark off the list of the remaining states I hadn’t visited. As we planned our trip, we ensured that it made sense for time with an infant in each place. We gave ourselves an understanding that even if we did one thing a day, that was enough. So our plan looked like this:

Vancouver u Fiji u Gold Coast u Melbourne u Hobart u Adelaide u Darwin

Yes, I am insane and I took Maverick and Ryan on this crazy adventure for six weeks, to the other side of the world.

uFiji

Although we left in August from a rather unusually hot Whitehorse, it was no preparation for the molten death of heat that was Fiji. At 5:20 a.m. we thought we had entered a sauna after getting off the plane. To boot, our Airbnb’s air conditioner broke the day we arrived, so we literally suffered after a 12-hour flight from Vancouver. (We hated our lives and wondered why we decided to do this trip.) However, once the air conditioner was back on and we got some sleep, the heat wasn’t as bad. We ventured around the area. First, we spent the day visiting an island off the coast. This was Maverick’s first time swim-

ming in the Pacific Ocean. It was so beautiful and the water was crystal-blue. Paradise.

The amazing thing about Fiji isn’t its beauty or its delicious food. It’s the people. They are obsessed with babies. Everytime we ate at a restaurant, the servers would come to take the baby—literally. Free babysitting! It was amazing. We actually got to eat together, like a real date.

Our next day we visited a multicoloured, famous temple and the Sleeping Giant orchids—followed by a mud-pit visit.

We somehow managed this with a baby. Thinking about it now, I really don’t know how we did it. A stroller fan helped, for sure, and we kept activities that were short and were in the mornings.

years, and it was a new city and my family had grown. I hadn’t met my nieces or nephew since they were born, and my family had not only grown, but it had grown up. It was amazing to be back home. My mum was so excited to meet her grandson, Maverick, as well as all of his family. She met us at the airport with tears in her eyes. We even met Maverick’s great-

grandparents, one who turned 100 years old while we were on the Gold Coast!

Mostly, it was seeing and being with family while getting to

do some fun things. We went to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where we got to pet koalas and kangaroos and see the Australian flora and fauna. We visited a nearby mountain and Ryan and I actually got a whole evening away.

(Thanks, Nana!)

uMelbourne

This was a great little stopover for Ryan, as his best friend from University lived there. We visited the Victorian wineries, which is one of the many reasons I put on six kilograms of weight during our trip.

uHobart

Our very short stop in Melbourne was met with a trip to Hobart, Tasmania. We rented a car, which was a great idea in order to have the freedom and flexibility to visit around the island. First, we went to an island off the island from a bigger island (yes, that should all make sense). We went to Bruny Island, famous for its ferry penguins. Unfortunately, that either requires you to be there at dawn or at dusk. With a baby in tow, this was not a possibility. Instead, we enjoyed the beauty of the landscape, the food and the wine—as well as seeing native wallabies from our cabin.

After a couple of days on this little island, we went back to the somewhat-bigger island of Tasmania and went to see Port Arthur. This was Ryan’s favourite part, looking at old convict buildings in the rain. But, after getting wet and noticing that the area was not stroller friendly, I sat inside with a glass of wine by the fireplace at 10 a.m. (Hey, when you’re on holiday, why not!) We explored some spectacular natural landmarks that made it seem like you were at the end of the Earth. We wished we had more time to explore more of Tasmania, but it was time for our road trip.

cliffs, crashing waves, tiny towns and a fabulous road trip.

Our favourite highlight was Maverick’s first helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles, the rock formations by the cliffs at the ends of Australia.

Over the couple of days that we stayed, Maverick was amazing. We would get out and have his “bouncy” to stretch his legs and ensure that our driving time was kept short.

uAdelaide

Eventually we made it to Adelaide, which in South Australia was one of the states of Australia that I had yet to visit (so … check!).

Adelaide is like Kelowna, with wineries everywhere! If you visit Adelaide, make sure to have a car to drive on its windy roads to some spectacular locations, and eat and drink to your heart’s content.

sidered the dry season. I couldn’t imagine the wet season. Darwin is located in the Northern Territory, which was my last state/territory to visit in Australia. It was heavily collaborative with Aboriginal lands and we enjoyed art, food and lots and lots of crocodiles! Maverick even got to pat one!

The dirt is red, and the air is thick and hot. I would take Maverick on walks at dawn (the only time it was pleasant enough to be outside) while Ryan slept. Of note was getting to “swim” with the crocodiles in the Cage of Death (in the crocodile reserve at Crocosaurus Cove). My fear of claustrophobia was definitely gone when those crocodiles snapped their jaws! n

Ryan and Maverick ready to hit the town

u

Melbourne to Adelaide (and the Great Ocean Road trip)

When you say the words road trip and four-month-old baby, I think the reaction would be like, Are you nuts?! Probably. But one of my bucket-list items was to drive the Great Ocean Road. This spectacular drive features sheer

Of note was a Salvador Dali art winery, which had actual Dali work and inspired architecture. The wines were also not bad. Just the weirdness is worth the visit.

uDarwin City

Our final destination before heading back to the Gold Coast. When we landed, it was 34 C and the air was so thick with humidity that it feels like you are showering. (Why would anyone want to live there?) This was still con-

YUKON HONOURED THE 2023 CELEBRATION OF SPORT AWARDS RECIPIENTS

The Government of Yukon, Sport Yukon, Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle and Special Olympics Yukon celebrated many of the territory’s top athletes with an award ceremony on Feb. 12

The Sport Yukon Major Awards are presented annually to members of the territory’s athletic community for their contributions to Yukon sports in seven categories for Athletes, Team, Coach and Administrator of the Year. This year’s ceremony, celebrating many of the territory’s top athletes in 2023, took place on Feb. 12.

“For me, it is very humbling,” said Shereen Hill, Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle winner for Female Coach of the Year. “I actually don’t like to be the center of attention, but to be recognized for my career, which has spanned over 30 years, is very humbling and I appreciate the respect from everybody else and the credit for it. For me, the recognition was great.”

Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle president Gord Reed recognized both Hill and Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle winner for Male Coach of the Year, Ross King, in a statement.

“On behalf of the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle, we are proud to recognize and encourage these people for their leadership and the

development of their sport and ongoing commitment that shows their dedication to helping young people to succeed,” Reed said.

“These efforts don’t go unnoticed and require our heartfelt appreciation on behalf of our organization. Including the thank you that

the athletes they coach express, given the opportunity. I would like to congratulate both Shereen and Ross on their achievements—most importantly, with the athletes that they coach and inspire for their overall success.”

The Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle award went to Hill and King for their commitment to the advancement of their athletes and programs, Hill in swimming and King in Arctic Sports. The pair helped the North American Indigenous Games teams and Arctic Winter Games sports teams.

Other distinctions include The

Premier’s Award, which recognizes the achievements of Yukon athletes who competed internationally or nationally; and the Minister’s Award, presented to athletes and teams who excelled at the Arctic Winter Games, Canada 55+ Games, provincials, Western Canadians or national and international competitions. The former was presented to 23 athletes and four teams, and the latter was earned by 62 athletes and three teams. Additionally, Special Olympics Yukon presents awards for Athletes of the Year, Most Improved Athletes of the Year, Athlete and Sport Volunteer Rising Stars and the Heather Miller Sport Volunteer of the Year, each year. While Hill is grateful to be recognized alongside her peers, she says it’s also important to recognize those who work behind the

scenes and don’t get the same attention.

“There are a lot of people who work behind the scenes that didn’t get recognized,” she said. “I do appreciate all the volunteers from the Aboriginal Sports Circle who helped organize and facilitate everything [and] all the parent volunteers that jumped on board to be mission staff or support or chaperone in any way, because none of this can happen without them volunteering.”

This year’s awards ceremony marked the first time the celebration occurred in person since the 2018 awards. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the recipients were recognized virtually. To learn more about the Sport Yukon Major Awards and see the full list of recipients, visit sportyukon. com n

Victoria Gold’s Ongoing Support for the Yukon First Nations Hockey Association

Victoria Gold is pleased to once again sponsor the Yukon First Nations Hockey Association’s (YFNHA) 44th Annual Kilrich Yukon Native Hockey Tournament Presented by Victoria Gold taking place from March 21 to 24 in Whitehorse.

Victoria Gold has proudly supported the event since 2018 and has a commitment to the YFNHA as the tournament’s Presenting Sponsor through to 2025.  The tournament is the largest event hosted in the Yukon’s capital city on an annual basis and brings together hundreds of Indigenous hockey players from across the north and Canada. In 2023, the tournament expanded by adding a women’s division, which brought the total team compliment from 43 to 56 (the maximum amount of teams Whitehorse facilities can host on three ice surfaces over four days).

“Victoria Gold is very excited to present the 44th Annual Kilrich Yukon Native Hockey Tournament again this year and help promote Indigenous hockey for all ages,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “We extend our sincere appreciation for the ongoing dedication of the YFNHA volunteer board of directors and tournament organizers and our congratulations to all the players.”

The YFNHA was established in 1973 to help provide the opportunity for Yukon First Nation athletes to compete with other Canadian provinces and territories in sport.

“As a hockey fan, I certainly look forward to the excitement and action on the ice and am appreciative for all this tournament contributes to the Yukon economy each year,” adds McConnell.
