or the Yukon’s theatre and live-performance community, 2024 is set to start on a strong note, with Nakai Theatre’s Pivot Festival returning to Whitehorse from January 2–26. This year will feature even more events and performances than last year’s edition, and among the programming is a visit from the Filipina Spice Girls of Comedy, Toronto sketch comedy and musical troupe—the Tita Collective. “We’ve travelled to a couple of different places outside of Toronto, to do shows, but never as far as Whitehorse,” said Tita Collective member Maricris Rivera. “We love performing in Toronto, but we’ve always been really intrigued and excited about the

Claire Ness idea of performing outside of our home city.” While Rivera and the rest of the Tita Collective, consisting of Ann Paula Bautista, Belinda Corpuz, Ellie Posadas and Alia Rasul, are bracing themselves for the cold January weather. They’re also looking forward to bringing their unique brand of comedy to a whole new audience and to seeing the northern lights. In addition to Tita Collective’s performance, this upcoming edition of Pivot Festival will feature a Kids’ Week at the Sun Room, with music, movement and storytelling in the Sun Room, which will be decorated to look and feel like an otherworldly beach planet; and the Riverfront Poetry Crawl, the annual tradition of stomp-

ing through the snow to meet local poets in unusual places. The Riverfront Poetry Crawl will end at the Old Fire Hall where crawlers will be treated to hot cocoa and the unveiling of this year’s Old Fire Hall TV and will feature five short video works from artists, near and far, who share the joys, challenges and weirdness of northern life. Old Fire Hall TV will be streaming, each morning and evening, from the corner of Front and Main. Additionally, Pivot Festival will include Burn Things!—a short parade to Shipyards where fire artists will dance and breathe flames; and Short Works, which will span across two nights—one cont’d on page 3

For Rivera and the rest of the Tita Collective, being part of a festival with such an eclectic host of programming is another exciting component to their participation, as

“

house is a big thing out there in the street. Why not art it up?” asked Tanya Handley, Whitehorse-based graphic designer and upcycling artist, when I asked her about Fenix House. Fenix House stands at the northeast corner of 6th Avenue and Wood Street in downtown Whitehorse. Handley owns the building in partnership with Bill Slater, an environmental engineer, and his wife Shehnaz Ali. All three came to the Yukon in 1992 and became friends. They were looking for a project in 2009. Slater needed an office. Handley and Slater, having building skills, thought that they should buy an old house and renovate it. Soon they realized that no one else would have pulled the house

back from the state it was in. The basement was avalanching. The original builders hadn’t done the footings right. They took down walls and replaced them, redoing 50 feet of wall on three sides. The top floor had rotted out because it was made before the introduction of vapour barriers. So they removed it and added a taller second floor but kept the same roof line. It began to seem like a miracle. When their friends came by to see what they were doing, they told them to tear it down. Instead, they made it into a work of art. “We think more like renovators than build-from-scratchers,” reflected Handley. They bought their 23 windows used. That’s where the distinctive half-moon window comes from. It was origin-

ally meant to be an arch, but they put it on its side. “It didn’t work to put it the other way.” That’s also where they got their circular window. Many of the design choices were determined by what was available in triple-paned windows. Handley observes that the group’s creative process starts with “what do we have” rather than “I can have anything I imagine: What do I want?” Moving towards zero waste and reusing things are values that they share. Handley travelled on the Camino in 2010. The renovation was unexpectedly still in progress, as these things often go. She noticed that almost every town had cont’d on page 7

Fenix House ... cont’d from page 4

Handley uses colour and strong lines to create an effect like how the owl and the tree branches form a connection across the side of the building skating rink and the river, down at Shipyards Park, you can see more of her work. Handley found deadfall in the forest and rusticized the chain-link fence around their garden, adding whimsical

Handley works with branches and birds to wrap Fenix House in whimsy a “Fenix” street and she told her friends about it. When she got back home, they were calling it the “Fenix House,” referring to the mythological bird more commonly spelled phoenix, in English, which is reborn from fire. For the house’s fiery colours, Ali is from Trinidad and she and Handley agree that flashy colours look best in winter. People know Fenix House for its yellow and orange colours. Handley reminisced about the beauty of Victorian houses—the “gingerbread” ornamentation that people worked on for years. Fenix House has many artistic touches, which you can see from the street. Handley said the reason she added these touches is partly because she’s the owner. She didn’t have to apply to anyone to do it. She just had to ask her co-owners, and they always said yes. For example, there’s a dead tree at the corner. Handley was going

to take it down, but her friend and neighbour, Sally Wright, said it was a stable structure. So Handley cut birds out of hardboard, painted them and installed them in the tree. The railings of the wheelchair accessibility ramp echo the lines of that tree. Handley doesn’t weld, so she teamed up with another friend, Katherine Alexander, who had gone to welding school, to make that ramp. The tree motif also appears on the alley side of the house. Handley wanted to put art there to avoid graffiti—“beat them to the punch”—and so far, it’s worked well. If you continue on around the alley side of the building, you’ll see an owl that Handley made using up the scraps from the birds in the tree. And as for the raven on the front of Fenix House, when Handley had to paint the house, after its first 10 years, she rented a Genie

boom, which she said was “super fun!” She rented it for a threeday weekend and, when she finished repainting the house, used it to put up the raven. Handley used the scrap siding from Fenix House to make the frame for an enormous owl sculpture. She used worn-out bike tires and tubes (from Cadence Cycle) to make its body. It still stands outside the Yukon Conservation Society at Hawkins Street and 3rd Avenue, a few blocks away. Tourists have their pictures taken with it. Handley often does graphic design work for the Yukon Literacy Coalition. If you visit their building in the Pioneer Hotel between the

concentric-design elements. Also, if you look closely, you’ll notice that the metal shutters over the windows aren’t the blank dullgrey of buildings nearby. Handley worked hard on creating realistic compositions from photographs, adding enough reflections that the dogs, for example, in the illusionist windows, look like they’re behind glass. Fenix House will be one of the stops on a walking tour of downtown public art by current and past members of Yukon Artists at Work (YAAW). Tours will leave from the YAAW gallery at 4th Avenue and Wood Street at 2 p.m. on January 13, 20 and 27. Find out more about Tanya Handley’s work at www.bearbait.ca/index. html. You can also see one of her silk-screen prints in the Salon Wall at Recollecting Yukon Artists At Work—on display at the Yukon Arts Centre until February 16. ■

MUSHROOM PASTA RISOTTATA A one-pot creamy mushroom pasta

H

olidays are wonderful and special, but also very expensive! Cooking a short-style pasta, using the same technique as risotto, elevates the flavour but also saves on a bunch of expensive ingredients and keeps it on the healthy(ish) side. And using a single pot makes it a welcome relief from the piles of holiday dishes. Serves 2 as a main, or 4 as a side.

INGREDIENTS ❑ 4 Tbsp butter, divided ❑ 1 shallot, thinly sliced ❑ 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced ❑ 3 cups thinly-sliced mushrooms ❑ 1 1/2 cups short pasta (shells, penne, ziti) ❑ 1/2 cup white wine ❑ 3–4 cups water (or stock) ❑ 3 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste

Shallots, garlic and mushrooms

Sautéed mushrooms

With the dry pasta added

Grated parmesan cheese

METHOD: 1. Melt 2 Tbsp butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and garlic and cook, stirring often, until soft, about 4 minutes. Add mushrooms and continue to cook until mushrooms begin to brown and have released their water, about 5 minutes. 2. Add dry pasta to the pot, then add wine. Continue to cook and stir until wine is absorbed, then add water or stock 1 cup at a time, stirring often until pasta is cooked. Add parmesan cheese and stir until incorporated. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. ■

EGGNOG, RUM SAUCE AND CHEESECAKE! PHOTOS: Miche Genest

I

am chagrined. I missed our neighbour’s open house. Not only is this party the best place to catch up with friends that we only see here, once a year, but also, my neighbour is famous for her killer eggnog. Creamy, frothy, spiked with rum and singing with nutmeg, it is delicious, potent and requires several return visits to the punch bowl just to be sure it’s as good as you think it is. (It is.) Having missed out on hers, I just had to make my own. Then, having made eggnog, I just had to make eggnog cheesecake. I discovered in my research there are many, many ways to make both eggnog and eggnog cheesecake. I sifted through methods and ingredients and came up with variations on both themes that I’m quite happy with. You don’t have to cook the eggnog: there are versions that incorporate whipped egg whites at the end, and versions that use raw eggs and whites. I wanted mine to last a bit longer, though, so I opted for the stovetop approach. Similarly, you don’t have to use eggnog in an eggnog cheesecake. Many of the recipes I found that did use eggnog in the filling called for the addition of flour. Who needs flour in a cheesecake filling? So, along with TV food star Ricardo, I went with sour cream, plus lots of nutmeg and lots of rum to get the full eggnog flavour. Finally, I was worried about cracks in the top of the cheesecake. So I made a little cranberry rum sauce in case the cracks needed disguising. Many recipes advised wrapping heavy tinfoil around the pan and placing it in a water bath to avoid the surface cracking as it cooked, but I didn’t want the palaver. I can live with a few cracks. Put the sauce on the top, on the side, or eliminate it altogether. Finally, If you plan to make this for the holidays, be sure to do it on a day when you don’t need the oven for hours and hours for other things, like large roasts or long braises. Cheesecake wants the oven to itself.

EGGNOG RECIPE INGREDIENTS • 3 cups milk (2% or 3.5%) • 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg (more to taste) • 4 large eggs • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1 cup 35% cream • 1/2 cup dark rum METHOD • Combine milk and nutmeg in a medium saucepan and heat over medium, just until steaming. • In the meantime, whisk eggs, salt and sugar together in a heatproof bowl, until lemony in colour. • Once milk is steaming, pour it slowly into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Pour egg/milk mixture back into the pot and cook, stirring constantly with a spoon, until the mixture coats the back of the spoon and has reached 160 F on an instantread thermometer. • Remove from the heat and pour into a bowl. Add 1 cup 35% and ½ cup dark rum and stir until combined. Cool the eggnog to room temperature before pouring into jars and refrigerating. Store in the refrigerator and consume within a week.

Sprinkle the reserved crumbs evenly over top. • Bake for 45 minutes, until the sides of the cake are set and the middle is still a bit jiggly. • Turn off the oven and leave the cake inside with the door closed for 45 minutes. (Put a note on the controls so no one turns on the oven by mistake.) Open the door sightly and leave for another 30 minutes. *This should help you achieve a cheesecake with no cracks in the surface, but there is no guarantee, and besides, a cracked cheesecake is “rustique,” to quote a dear friend and fellow baker. • Cool cake in the pan for 30 minutes before removing the rim and parchment paper. Once it has reached room temperature, chill for several hours before serving. Makes one 9-inch round cake.

WINTER’S INVITATION TO TURN INWARD “We don’t have to wait to be snowed in or for the power to go out in order to rest, reset and recharge.”

T

hese past several weeks, life in the natural world has been slowing down. Plants have died back, deciduous trees have lost their final leaves, and hibernating animals have been turning in for the winter. We humans don’t really make many adjustments, anymore, as the seasons change: work still starts at the same time, school buses head into

the changes going on around us, we ignore how it affects us. We choose to believe that only plants and animals benefit from a period of dormancy and rest and that we, as a species, have found a way to avoid the hassle of slowing down. Our well-being pays the price, however. Our bodies pay the price. And unfortunately it’s often illness that finally gets us to slow

the essentials (warmth, food and hopefully some good company). Remember what a snow day felt like as a kid? That’s the feeling I yearn for. We don’t have to wait to be snowed in or for the power to go out in order to rest, reset and recharge. We can give ourselves permission to dim the lights, dig out some candles, cook something

Nature knows that there is beauty and nourishment in slowing down

town in the wee hours of the morning—life goes on as it has all year long (although, now, a large part of it is lived in darkness). We’re a stubborn species and most of us stick to our routines and schedules, even when all around us are signs that it’s time to slow down. Electricity has given humanity the opportunity to do more and to be more productive, but it’s also disconnected us from the rhythms of nature. Modern society never slows down; in fact, this time of year stress levels often ramp up and life becomes more hectic around the holidays. We try to ignore what’s going on outside of our warm homes and offices. We press on despite the limited hours of daylight, the freezing temperatures and the growing blanket of snow. Even if we’re aware of

down. What if we didn’t wait that long and instead took a break voluntarily? This is the time of year to rest, to reset our nervous systems, to reflect and to relax. It’s a time of nourishing and softening. Rather than trying to push through our to-do lists and endless errands, why don’t we try to turn down the dial a little? What if we chose to be gentler with ourselves? I don’t know about anyone else, but I love a power outage. It’s incredible how still the world becomes. The constant hum of gadgets and home appliances quiets, and everything gets simple. There’s no Wi-Fi and no TV. There’s just the crackling of the fire in the woodstove and, if you’re lucky, something yummy bubbling in a big pot on top. The world outside melts away and you’re left with

antidote to the taxing pressures of the holiday season. When was the last time you listened to a record in its entirety, submerging your-

self in the lyrics and the notes? I remember, as a child, watching the vinyl spin round and round on my parents’ turntable, noticing the slightest pops and clicks that were created every time a fleck of dust would hit the needle. Analog, low-tech, tangible things are perfect for this time of year. Let yourself be soothed by simple pleasures as snow falls softly outside—moonlight casting shadows of bare tree branches on the white ground. Memorize a poem, listen to your favourite album from beginning to end (in the dark), write someone a letter by hand, meditate, take a nap, go for a slow walk in the fresh snow, gaze into the fire, journal, reflect on the past year and set intentions for next one, read a good book, and cook something comforting that has to simmer all day. Soften and turn inward. On the days that you can, start your day slowly, enjoying the coziness of a warm home, a period of empty time and a cup of something hot. And in the evening, choose to go to bed early as the stars twinkle in the sky above. Conserve your energy, sleep the kind of sleep that gives your body a chance to rest and repair itself, and tap into the spirit of hibernation so that you’ll be ready to blossom once again in spring. ■

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

AUSSIE GIRL IN THE YUKON

Kylie Campbell-Clarke Kylie Campbell-Clarke is an Australian-Canadian writer and photographer exploring the Yukon.

TRAVELLING WITH A BABY: PART 2 T ravelling (literally across the world) requires planning and also luck when you have a five-month old baby. But my husband Ryan and I managed to survive on our recent trip to Australia and Fiji. So, here are some tips for international travelling!

you keep a consistent schedule for your little one, and organizing the time of your flights can really help with that. Get flights that are overnight: the baby sleeps, you sleep, and often you save on accommodation.

PREPARING Airlines are pretty good with SEATING (FOR BABY!) This miracle contraption is a babies. We flew with five different must for any baby under nine airlines and each one was a little months old! Our flights from Van- different. The low-cost airlines couver to Nadi, Fiji, were 10 to 12 hours, and the thought of holding Maverick for that long made me cry. So, when I was perusing my favourite group for mothers who like to travel, there I saw it—a bassinet seat. It’s a bassinet that Maverick in his travel bassinet clips into the plane so it sits in front of you in the bulkhead row. You have lots wouldn’t let us of room to play with your baby bring our strollers and keep bottles, etc., that you to the gate, but will need throughout the night. It the higher-quality costs a little more but it is worth ones like Fiji and Qantas did. So it. be prepared that you won’t always TIMING Flying at weird times over the be able to take international date line can cause the things you your head to spin. I left Vancou- want or need … ver on Friday night and got to Fiji but—you will alon Sunday; but, in reverse, I left ways be allowed Fiji Monday evening and landed in to take anything Vancouver on Monday afternoon. to feed or change What?! It’s really important that your baby. Make

sure you prepare bottles or bring a pump (it’s allowed!). Make sure you have a good diaper bag: I have a No Reception Club bag and it is the best bag, which seems to be like Mary Poppins with my never-ending bag of baby goodies, and you’ll be able to take a little satchel to the bathroom, to change your baby, or pull out your cooler bag of bottles to put in the airline fridge. When you’re tired and delayed and travelling for long periods of time, having everything prepared will save you and your marriage!

BOUNCING Maverick wasn’t doing much when we went to Australia, and being in a bassinet seat or car seat for hours on end, he wanted to bounce or stand. We travelled with a pop-out bouncer and it was a life saver! I highly recommend (for whatever age group you are travelling with) that you bring something. Every (yes, every) airline allows three infant items. We had a car seat that clips into our stroller and the bouncer (cot). It

and frustration. But, we survived six weeks in two different countries and didn’t kill each other. ■

ENTERTAINING Possibly a contentious topic, but Maverick loves Hey Bear. It’s literally a YouTube channel that features dancing fruit and vegetables. Download offline to your devices (you’ll thank me!). ENJOYING Sometimes you just have to laugh, because delays happen and s@#t (literally) happens. Just enjoy each moment. It wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine, travelling. There were meltdowns and fights

WHITEHORSE PHOTO CLUB SHOWCASE

December 2023

Walter Gutowski — Smashing the Gate Yukoner Mackenzie Jenner smashing a slalom gate at the recent Mount Sima Aurora Cup FIS race

Carol Foster — S.S. Klondike on the Yukon River (circa 1953–1955) This is a photo from a slide that my dad took, between 1953 and 1955, of the SS Klondike on the Yukon River

Ray Marnoch — Mutual Curiosity After the last cruise ships departed from Skagway, I enjoyed a quiet drive down the South Klondike Highway, stopping to take in the amazing views of the coastal mountains in their fall splendour. Several large groups of wild mountain goats grazed in the warm sun on the slopes above the waters of Windy Arm. As luck would have it, a healthy billy goat appeared close by and interrupted his munching to stare at me. I was transfixed when our eyes met.

Steve Wilson — On Golden Pond “The fall colours were at their peak on September 25, 2023, when Kim and I took a drive on the Carcross-Tagish Loop. This pond was near the Tagish Road between Tagish and Jake’s Corner.”

Jerry Gallant — Frosty Yukon Day A Frosty image taken at the Rotary Centennial Bridge last December.

Sunny Lewis — Hot Water Mist Taken in my yard on a very cold day.

Carol Foster — Swallow Leaving Home A swallow leaving its nest in Stewart Crossing.

John Reeve — Ballet On Ice I was surprised when the swans landed on this small pothole lake in Mount Lorne, after it had frozen over. They rested for the better part of an hour before departing.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy Holidays On behalf of Victoria Gold, I extend my warmest wishes to Yukoners throughout the territory for a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season. As Victoria Gold reflects on the year that was and looks forward to a new one, we would like to thank Yukoners for their continuing support of our work at the Eagle Gold Mine and the benefits and opportunities responsible mining provides. We would also like to extend special appreciation to Yukon Wildland Fire Management and to Village of Mayo residents and businesses for their commitment to the community and to the Eagle Gold Mine throughout this summer’s wildfire threat to the region and to our operations. Yukoners’ spirit is both unwavering and inspiring. From our Yukoners At Work and our partnership with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun, within whose traditional territory we are privileged to explore and mine within, to the hundreds of employees and contractors who help make our operations possible, Victoria Gold is very grateful to work here in the territory. From my family to yours, thank you and Happy Holidays! I look forward to connecting with you in the new year. John McConnell

Tara Christie and John McConnell with their daughter Kate and faithful friend Ollie. Seated: Tara’s parents, and longtime Yukon placer miners, Jim and Dagmar Christie.

The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens.
