himsical. That’s the word used to summarize the famous and funky log “skyscrapers” of downtown Whitehorse. In 1999, a heritage building report was created for the City of Whitehorse by Midnight Arts, and the term whimsical is used to best describe both the two- and three-storey log structures on Lambert Street. Built in the 1940s by Martin Berrigan (who was around 75 himself at the time!), and using a simple lap-notched log design, the buildings have remained much the same throughout the decades and are both a tourist draw and a cultural icon for the city. The structures have been photographed extensively, have appeared on letterhead and postcards, have been painted by equally-famous artists, were the headquarters for a federal party leader (and MP) and have even been incorporated into the nameplate of What’s Up Yukon. Terry Atkins, of Griffiths Heating and Sheet Metal, is the current

the first apartment buildings in the Yukon,” he said, adding that the three-storey structure is probably better known than its two-storey sibling. “It’s the most photographed building in the Yukon.” In addition to being the Yukon headquarters for NDP party leader Audrey McLaughlin and the first office of the fledgling entertainment publication What’s Up Yukon, Skyscraper Treasures was a long-time fixture in the smaller of the two buildings. The original sign from Yukoner Irene Pugh’s souvenir shop now hangs in a spacious room in Atkin’s home. He said Pugh had

owner and landlord of the historic buildings (which turned 75-yearscont’d on page 3 old in 2023). Atkins said he purchased them two decades ago and has enjoyed them every day since. When you look around his home in the Southern Lakes, you can appreciate his love for history, travel and, of course, all things Yukon, including the beloved log skyscrapers. Atkins has been collecting everything—from paintings to coffee mugs and photographs, to signage—all depicting the vintage buildings. A flat copy photo of the Log Skyscrapers “They were

storey building, allowing for the creation of a new rental unit. Of course, there have been modern interior upgrades—and upgrades to utilities, he added. One particularly interesting historical fact about the two buildings is that when they were constructed, the top units were accessible only by ladders as there were no stairs. As for the projected lifespan of the buildings, there seems to be no slowing them down as they age gracefully. After the foundation additions, over 40 years ago, the buildings have seen little in the way of degradation (with the exception of a deliberate fire set in the upper unit of the twostorey building in 2010), and At-

kins agreed they could easily be around for another 75 years. “They are pretty structurally sound,” he said. For those interested in renting one of the units in either building, the need for a good amount of patience is probably the first thing to reconcile, as the apartments have never been empty while under Atkins’ ownership, with current tenants being offered the opportunity to move up to the higher floors should they desire. Currently, there is a long line of people who would love to call the log skyscrapers home. “There’s a waiting list,” Atkins said with a chuckle. ■

and, of course, the iconic buildings were very Yukon-centric and fit into the WUY brand—literally. “The logo was designed on a napkin,” she said, adding that it was inspired by the work of long-time artist Jim Robb. Beese said she had originally wanted Robb to design the logo but he was preoccupied with other work at the time. So she worked with a designer to create the now easily recognizable logo for WUY, with a nod towards Robb and his work. “He was the inspiration,” she said. Beese said that having the office space for the publication, and the logo in the name, just made sense. “It’s iconic Yukon.” Atkins said the buildings have been pretty much the same since their construction in 1947, with the exception of the addition of the concrete foundations in the 1970s that created a substantial space at the bottom of the three-

An old colour photograph of the buildings on Lambert Street many items emblazoned with images of the log skyscrapers, which she sold to tourists who stopped by to see the famous structures over the years. Many of those souvenirs can be seen at Atkins’ home, which is a veritable museum of log skyscraper paraphernalia depicting, in great detail, the various decades the buildings have existed. He said he wasn’t sure how that all came about but that items have just slowly accumulated over the years. “I think it’s just because I like collecting stuff,” Atkins said with a grin. When Tammy Beese, owner and publisher of What’s Up Yukon, was looking for an office space for the new magazine in 2005, she found exactly what she was looking for. “When I set out to get my first office [one of] the log skyscraper [units] was for rent,” she said. The iconic three-storey Log Skyscraper on Lambert Street in downtown Whitehorse is one of the most photographed buildings in all of the territory. It, along with its twostorey sibling, have housed artists, businesses, politicians and soldiers. The two structures—which were the very first apartment buildings in the territory—turn 75 this year.

The Old Log Church

B

uilt by Reverend Bowen in 1900, the Old Log Church has been a constant presence in Whitehorse. The building has been in continuous use for over 120 years, first as a church and community gathering space and now as a museum. The Old Log Church Museum has a unique presence, as the building itself is an artifact. When people come to visit the museum, they are walking into a building that has welcomed “people from all walks of life, with a multitude of perspectives, for over 120 years,” said the director of the Old Log Church, Christine De Brabandere. Step into the Old Log Church Museum and a sense of peace will greet you. The Old Log Church is primarily a museum, yet it does hold historic services in the summer. Preserved there is the atmosphere of spirit and peace. The Old Log Church and Rectory are among the oldest structures still standing in Whitehorse. Bishop William Carpenter Bompas (Rev. R.J. Bowen) had already constructed small log churches at Forty Mile and Dawson City. Bowen had the church built in just two months. The first service was held on October 7, 1900.

The church uses simple halflap log construction. Subsequent additions show the growth and development of the Old Log Church through improved craftsmanship and the incorporation of traditional church design features such as the sanctuary, vestry and baptistery. Bowen came to the Yukon in 1895. He began his ministry for the Anglican Church in the North as the Bishop of the Diocese of Athabasca, in 1865. He came from England to minister in the wilderness with his wife, Selina. By 1891, their work had resulted in the appointment of William Bompas as the first Bishop of Selkirk, the district which encompassed the Yukon. His refusal to accept the rapidly deteriorating conditions of the First Nations of the Yukon, as white prospectors moved in, would eventually result in the arrival of the North-West Mounted Police in the territory. Before the Old Log Church was built, the first church services in Whitehorse were held in a tent structure with the rector and his wife living in a tent. The log church was built by October 1900. During the winter of 1900, the forward portion, which now con-

tains the chancel and sanctuary, was partitioned and used by the missionary and his wife as their living quarters until the completion of the rectory in 1901. The bell tower was originally separate from the church but, in 1910, the tower fell over in a storm and the bell was cracked. Although a new bell was placed atop the church, it was not enclosed until 1945. The Old Log Church was also used by the congregation of St. Simon’s Church, for many years. In 1960, a new cathedral was built beside the Old Log Church. Two years later, the Old Log Church became a museum. Since 2014, it has been declared as a Yukon historic site and a historic site in the city of Whitehorse. Today, many artifacts that showcase Yukon history are showcased in the museum. Visitors can learn about life in the Yukon before the gold rush and also explore the art of the Vuntut Gwitchin and life in Old Crow, looking through the eyes of Beth-Anne and Rev. Kenah Exham who worked there in the 1960s. The museum holds over 4,500 artifacts and also preserves a big part of Yukon history. ■

FOSSILS IN THE YUKON

Take a peek into the territory’s expansive fossil collection, going back millions of years

G

rant Zazula has been a Yukon government paleontologist since 2006, overseeing the territory’s fossil collections, research and other aspects of the program. “Most of our work is focused on the Ice Age history of Yukon,” he said. “So, stories and research about Beringia, the Bering Land Bridge and the different types of animal communities and plant communities, how climate change has impacted those over the years, how these different mammals have changed and how that’s reflected in the fossil record, is the work that we do.” For Zazula, there are many reasons why the Yukon is an exciting and interesting place to practice paleontology. During the Ice Age, regions like the Dawson City and Old Crow areas actually remained icefree when most of Canada was covered by glaciers, meaning there were animals living there during those times. “They weren’t able to live in the Northwest Territories or Saskatchewan or Alberta because it was covered in ice,” he explained. “It was this refuge for animals during the Ice Age and, because of the permafrost, the remains of those animals are

Bison skull preserved very well in the frozen ground in the Yukon. What’s really neat about it, for me, is it provides the opportunity to provide clarity on how the modern world of the Yukon came to be.” Looking back a few thousand years, Zazula noted that the environmental and climate conditions were very different and that

people could actually see live wooly mammoths, lions and other animals that the Yukon doesn’t have anymore. “The study of Ice Age paleontology in the Yukon really [helps] us to understand why we don’t have mammoths anymore, but why we do have moose, and why we still have caribou,” he said. “The fossil records of those animals, setting the scene for what we have today, is pretty exciting.” Today, many fossils from the Yukon’s vast history are on display

Black-footed ferret and can be viewed by the public at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre’s Great Hall, as part of a new exhibit that opened in June. Christie Grekul, who has been the manager of the interpretive centre for eight years, said she is very excited to be showcasing these fossils. ”Since our previous exhibits in the Great Hall were a lot of casts of skeletons that were not from the Yukon, we wanted Yukoners to be able to directly interact with the fossils and the made-inYukon stories about Ice Age discoveries, research and collaborations,” said Grekul. “When students come to the Beringia Centre and can experience fossils like a 30,000-[year-old] mummified Arctic ground squirrel, it is a pretty neat and unforgettable experience for them.

Caribou And then they get to learn about how these tiny Arctic ground squirrels successfully adapted during the Ice Age and that researchers use their preserved nests to help determine what the Ice Age mammoth steppe environment looked like!” In the summers, the Yukon’s paleontology teams spend a lot of time doing fieldwork around Dawson City, where the gold miners are tearing through permafrost with heavy machinery, as Zazula explained. During the mining process, fossils from Ice Age animals can be uncovered and collected. “Our teams are out there working with gold miners all summer, and we also work with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation from Dawson City,” said Zazula. “We

Wolf pup also do this kind of work in the Old Crow region.” Once the fossils are brought back after being uncovered, they get cleaned up and identified before being catalogued. According to Zazula, there are over 45,000

Prehistoric fossils in the paleontology lab fossils catalogued into the system now. “In particular, with the Beringia Centre, in the last couple of years, there was a process of renovating the museum, so we wanted to get many of our favourite Ice Age fossils on display,” he said. “We brought a bunch back from Ottawa that were in the collections of the national museum, the Canadian Museum of Nature, so we went through this whole process of choosing and picking and deciding what stories we wanted to tell, then putting those fossils on display.”

The fossils aren’t all extinct creatures. Zazula mentioned that one particular fossil may be that of the world’s oldest caribou from a million and a half years ago. These kinds of things can pique interest in the Yukon’s natural history, since many people may not know that some of the animals that we can see today existed long ago, alongside mammoths and other extinct species. According to Grekul, the Yukon’s natural history is like that of almost nowhere else on Earth. “Yukon is one of the few locations where fossils allow us to get a glimpse into the Ice Age world,” said Grekul. “These fossils, found in the Yukon permafrost, are incredibly preserved, and it is so great that visitors and students from across Yukon can come to the Beringia Centre and see and learn about things such as a 1.5-million-yearold steppe mammoth tooth or the oldest caribou bone ever found in the Yukon.” To learn more about the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre and its fossil displays, visit www.beringia.com. “It’s a really great opportunity to tell the stories about the changes we’ve seen in Beringia, through time, over the past few million years,” said Zazula. “Hopefully people get the chance to learn about it there.” ■

WHAT DOES YUKON’S HERITAGE MEAN TO YOU? PHOTOS: Jessica Surber

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey

Two such often overlooked relics are the S.S. Klondike and the Yukon Theatre. S.S. Klondike National Historic Site Many of us drive by it every day, maybe not even giving it a second glance anymore. It’s symbolic of Whitehorse, as well as of the Yukon; and yet, have you really thought about what that paddlewheeler lived through? For example, did you know that the S.S. Klondike that now sits on the banks of the Yukon River, in Whitehorse, is actually the second S.S. Klondike? The first ran freight between Whitehorse and Stewart Landing, as well as between

ere in the Yukon we are so lucky to be surrounded by an incredible richness of heritage and historical places. Like all things inherited, however, it can also, at times, feel like a burden just as much as a privilege. Some might think that the North is just a place filled with trees and snow and bears, and yet there’s thousands of years of history permeating the landscapes that we get to live, work and play in each day.

Artwork in glass at the the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre There are the obvious tangible things around us: the slightly-tilted buildings built more than a hundred years ago, the rusty artifacts brought up during the construction of the Alaska Highway, the mammoth tusks unearthed in the melting permafrost, and impressive First Nations artwork. But, just as vital and important are the intangible things: the songs and dance passed down through generations, the cherished family recipes (such as sourdough bread or bannock), the skills to hunt and trap in this unique environment, the stories told around thousands of fires, and the ancient languages spoken, now, only by a few. These pieces of Yukon heritage are links to the past, to memories and to people. They’re real, immediate ways of touching an ear-

It’s not a matter of glorifying the past but of seeing it as part of where we are now, in the present. We’re just another link in the continuation of our ever-evolving heritage. Not all parts of our history are things that we can be proud of; and yet they, too, need to be remembered and recognized. Like the shadow parts of a person’s identity, these dark periods of the past are undeniable components of us as a people today. As Marcus Garvey said, heritage is the root system of who we

The Yukon Theatre was built in 1954 during the post-war period, only a year after Whitehorse was freshly designated as the Yukon’s capital. In 1980, it was taken over by Landmark Cinemas until it was closed in 2020 during the pandemic. Fortunately, two years ago, in December 2021, the Yukon Film Society reopened this historical building’s doors and Whitehorse, once again, is home to a movie theatre.

Klondike II was built after the first ran aground on a submerged gravel bar north of The Thirty Mile section of the Yukon River (where it still lies today) and was in use from 1937 to 1952. In the early ’50s she was converted into a cruise ship by the White Pass and Yukon Route, but cost of operation was high; and so, after being abandoned in 1967, the S.S. If you’re interested in exploring historical places in the territory, the Yukon Historical and Museums Association has a long list of heritage places, historical buildings and self-guided walking tours on their website at heritageyukon. ca. Looking at their list, I know there’s still many places I hope to someday experience, especially Herschel Island–Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park and Vuntut National Park. Also, check out yukon.ca/ en/yukons-living-heritage to see what you should do if you stumble across a heritage find. And remember that heritage is so much more than just museums and decaying buildings. Look for the intangible things—such as dance, language, stories and food—because they are history that is still alive and breathing and being shared. What does heritage mean to you? And how can you honour and nourish your own roots a bit more? ■

TR’ONDËK-KLONDIKE ACHIEVES WORLD HERITAGE STATUS

T

wenty-six years after it was first proposed by Pierre Berton, in 1997, and 19 years after it was officially submitted by Canada, Tr’ondëk-Klondike, as the nomination came to be known, has achieved World Heritage status, having been officially inscribed at the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on September 17, 2023. It’s been a long journey since that headline in the Klondike Sun and the Whitehorse Star, in 1997, proclaimed “Berton Proposes Dawson for World Heritage Site Status.” This wasn’t the first time it had been suggested, but it was the beginning of a process that led to the following entry on the UNESCO website on Sept. 17. The UNESCO website announcement (whc.unesco.org/en/ list/1564) was concise and to the point. Tr’ondëk-Klondike “Located along the Yukon River in the sub-arctic region of Northwest Canada, Tr’ondëk-Klondike lies within the homeland of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation. It contains archaeological and historic sources that reflect Indigenous people’s adaptation to unprecedented changes caused by the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century. The series illustrates different aspects of the colonization of this area, including sites of exchange between the Indigenous population and the colonists, and sites demonstrating Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in’s adaptations to colonial presence.” Parks Canada went into more detail on its website (parks.canada.ca): “Tr’ondëk-Klondike World Heritage site is a serial property comprised of eight distinct heritage locations: Fort Reli-

Screen shot from meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Celebration at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre ance; Ch’ëdähdëk (Forty Mile); Ch’ëdähdëk Tth’än K’et (Dënezhu Graveyard); Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine; Tr’ochëk; Dawson City; Jëjik Dhä Dënezhu Kek’it (Moosehide Village); and Jëjik Dhä Tthe Zra’y Kek’it (Black City). These sites collectively total 334 hectares of land and encompass component sites along parts of the Yukon River and the Blackstone River.” “The unique cultural makeup of the region is the product of the coexistence of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and settlers over the last century and a half. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in experience and adaptation to European settler colonialism

marked the landscape with distinct cultural heritage attributes that remain to this day.” This is a distinctly different site than the Gold Rush commemoration that Berton and his nominating partner, Pierre Dalibard, had in mind when they proposed this during the Gold Rush Centennial years (1996–98). Berton, of course, spent his pre-teen years in Dawson and wrote the Governor General’s Award winning Klondike: The Last Great Gold Rush,

1896–1899. He continued to write about the area until the last of his 50 adult and 23 children’s books. Dalibard had worked for Parks Canada when the Klondike National Historic Site was created back in the 1960s. He also went on later to sit on the UNESCO board (ICOMOS — International Council on Monuments and Sites) that governs World Heritage Site selection. Parks Canada press release* (parks.canada.ca) explained some of the process: “During yesterday’s proceedings at the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Tr’ondëk-Klondike, located in the homeland of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in in northwestern Canada, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. “Led by the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government and the Tr’ondëkKlondike World Heritage Site Advisory Committee, with support from the Government of Yukon, the City of Dawson, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Parks Can-

ada, Tr’ondëk-Klondike tells the story of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in’s experiences and responses to the startlingly rapid expansion of colonialism in their homeland between 1874 and 1908. Archaeological and historical evidence denotes timelines of both Indigenous and settler occupation of important sites throughout the region and together are a comprehensive record of the events that transformed the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in way of life.” An earlier version of the proposal had attempted to include the goldfields, while specifically allowing the continuation of current and future mining activity. The branch of UNESCO that advises on conservation efforts—IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature)—raised objections to this, and when it was clear that submission would not be accepted, it was withdrawn and a revised submission was created which did not include active mining areas and which refocused on the Indigenous experience. Disclosure: This reporter broke this story in 1997, after interviews with the original proponents, and has been an active member of the Tr’ondëk-Klondike World Heritage Site Advisory Committee (TKWHS) since its inception. A search of the WUY website will reveal several articles written during the first phase of this process. *License for use of source: whc. unesco.org/en/licenses/6 ■

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

HOW ARE THINGS UNDER THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR? Have you had a look under your hood, how are your fluid levels, what about your belts and hoses. Most owners manuals show you where to check fluids at, if you have to add any fluids make sure they are the ones for your car. The belts and hoses are sometimes a little harder to check, if you are unable to check them or have any questions, take your car to your mechanic so they can have a look at it for you.

Elsie Jordan Elsie Jordan made the Yukon her home in 2014. She has a passion for storytelling, with a focus on family (mis)adventures featuring a unique Yukon feel to them.

BACK TO BERINGIA W

e were looking for something fun to do … As my son is getting older and continues to appreciate any opportunity to learn about new things, I thought, What better way to embrace this than to take him on a family outing to the Beringia Centre? We have been there before, for special events and trips with visiting relatives, but he had always been a little too young to really explore the centre. The engaging exhibits,

Checking out the skulls

Inspecting fossils which showcase an important part of Yukon history, had always gone over his head, but I was hoping this time it might be a little different. Sure enough, when I told him where we were planning on going, he seemed excited to check out the large animals they had on display that he recalled from the previous time we visited—especially the mammoth family, which had brought a big smile to his face. He insisted on taking a

car. It brought me a lot of happiness that he was proudly describing them as mammoths, this time around, as last time we experienced some difficulty with explaining to him that they weren’t a family of elephants (a tough task with a stubborn preschooler). I do have to say, though, that the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre does a great job at providing an immersive experience, right away, by introducing you to historical creatures as you walk on the little wooded path towards the main entrance. Together we read the plaques, scouted for wildlife and even took a photo of Little Buddy giving the giant beaver a hug. It was definitely a great way

Psst, I’ll let you in on a secret, SANTA LOVES SKAGWAY!

It’s Santa’s busiest time of the year, but he’s hanging out in Skagway, Alaska. Don’t worry, he’s left his best elves in charge at the North Pole, so Christmas is right on track.

Santa wants to hang out with YOU, so come visit!

to start the visit. Once inside, I was pleased to find that the exhibits had continued to be well set-up and included a new child-play area since the grand reopening in June. The play area consists of a cave-like structure that my boy enjoyed climbing in and out of as he explored the colouring activities and animal figures and plushies that they provide for young ones to play with. His favourite had to be the scimitar cats, which he had a great time role-playing with. It was also a treat to watch him experience the hands-on stations that the centre provides. We had so much fun exploring skulls; inspecting the fossilized pollen, with magnifying glasses; and checking out all of the tools that the First Peoples of Beringia had used in order to survive, all those years ago.

Steppe bison

The exhibits are well laid out and it was a breeze to take my three-year-old around the centre to see everything. It doesn’t take too long to explore all of the displays and exhibits, and my son was entirely mesmerized by the fossils and bones that we spotted throughout. There was so much to see and learn about that his little brain was firing on all cylinders as we both learned new things about the land we live on and how much it has changed. SANTA LOVES SKAGWAY! Friday, December 1 Friday, December 8 Santa lights up Broadway at the Skagway Tree Lighting

He shows up on a Fire Truck all lit up with holiday lights. It’s pretty cool! Grab a warm beverage at the NPS Trail Center, then listen and even join in the caroling while you wait for Santa’s arrival. You can also explore the Fire Hall and Police Station at their open house before the tree lighting. Santa is heading over to Happy Endings to warm up at their fireplace after the tree lighting. He’d love to visit with you while he is there!

Meet Santa at WPYR

Santa is down for Saturday’s big train ride and will be hanging out at the train depot from 5-7 pm.

Saturday, December 9 Santa Train & Rail Sale Artisan Market

Santa and you on a train ride. Need we say more? The ride is free and there are two departure times, 11 am & 1 pm Alaska time, so everyone can enjoy the ride. After your train ride, pop over to the AB Hall for the Rail Sale Artisan Market, then head to the Skagway Brewing Company for live music with JuanSolo.

With all the fun things happening in Skagway, it’s no wonder it’s Santa’s home away from home! View the complete Yuletide schedule at skagway.com/events
