he leadup to the holidays is always a busy time for the Whitehorse Community Choir. With their annual Christmas concert around the corner, conductors Barbara Chamberlain and C.D. Saint, as well as their accompanists and singers, have a lot on their plates. Thankfully, we were able to get this year’s What’s Up Yukon interviews done ahead of time, before the real crunch. “It always takes lots of work and organization to get all of this done and where it should be,” said Chamberlain. “It’s going well. The notes are still being learned, but they’re almost there.” This year’s Christmas concert, called Christmas Through Time, features a mix of old to modern Christmas music performed by the Whitehorse Community Choir and smaller groups—the Persephones,

the Neptunes and the Chamber Choir—with accompanists Barry Kitchen and Cheryl Wishart. This year’s concerts will also feature Meta Epstein on harp, Jerome McIntyre on bodhran and percussion, Lee Covin on bagpipe, and Katie Avery on violin. Many of this year’s selections are from Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, which Britten wrote on a ship in 1942. Two segments will be performed by the large choir; and three more by the women’s choir, the Persephones. With Epstein lending her harp skills to the choir, it seemed a shoe-in choice for a concert based on the idea of Christmas through time. “They’re very famous pieces in the choir world, and they’re famous because they have harp,” Chamberlain explained. “They

were actually written for children, but they’re not easy pieces, so women’s choirs have taken over.” Incorporating a bagpipe can bring up challenges for the singers, and Chamberlain has to be strategic with the placement of the bagpipe player, given that the instrument is so loud. “When you have a full-sized bagpipe, you have to put the bagpipe behind the curtains in the back, in order for them to be able to sing over it, because they’re really loud,” said Chamberlain. “But the person I got to do it this year, Lee, plays a smaller one, so we’ll find out. I don’t know exactly how loud it is. Maybe we’ll have to place him to the side and back cont’d on page 3

Christmas with the Choir ... cont’d from page 2 a little bit, but we’ll see.” One thing Chamberlain wanted to make sure that this year’s show had was lots of variety. By choosing pieces that take audiences back centuries or decades, and by mixing them with modern works, there’s no shortage of potential for variety without straying from the theme. “You can go see art in a museum, but with music, the museum is brought to you. You can hear something composed in the 1600s, right in front of your face,” said Chamberlain. “Music Through Time has always been different from the other arts in that it’s very hands-on; it’s not something you put on a wall and look at. It’s something that is sung for you, composed 400 years ago, and we take it for granted that this ought to exist.” Big changes are coming for the choir, as this will be Chamberlain’s last Christmas concert with the group. After taking a sabbatical last year, the conductor rediscovered her passion for performing and decided she is ready to move on to other opportunities after this coming spring. “It will be bittersweet, always,” she said. “But really, it’s time to move on and do something else. I’m not getting younger.” Chamberlain is grateful to work alongside Saint, who is leading the Chamber Choir. This will be Saint’s second concert conducting his group of singers. “It’s a little different for me because often, with the Chamber Choir, instead of having a conductor out front, I sing with the choir,” Saint said. “We figure out how we’ll move through the songs as a choir, together.” Saint is happy to help Cham-

berlain work towards her semiretirement, and though the idea of stepping into more of a leadership role can be daunting, he is up for the challenge. Though Saint and Chamberlain have different approaches, they both find each other’s leadership skills inspiring. Saint’s Chamber Choir will be performing four selections for “Christmas Through Time”: two being Christmas songs and two leaning more on the secular side, as Saint notes that the holidays are not just Christmas for everyone.

“Some of the music is a little more challenging, and the singers wanted to be challenged in a way that’s different from how the big choir works,” he explained. “Often our stuff goes into eight parts, rather than four, and that’s where we’re working from, to build that sense of independence in [the] community. We’re all trying to do something that we can’t do alone. It really is an expression of community.” A relative newcomer to the territory, Saint has been living in the Yukon for four years but has found

a home in the vibrant arts community. He is excited for his future with the choir and the possibility of taking things in new directions. “It offers an opportunity for renewal and reconsideration of who we are and what role we play in the community,” he said. “Barb has had a good vision of that.” Christmas Through Time takes place December 1 and 2 at the Yukon Arts Centre. n July of 2014, I was attending the Moosehide Gathering, hosted by the Tr’ondëk Hëwch’in First Nation (THFN) at the community of Moosehide, located some five kilometres downstream from Dawson City. The THFN had lived at many locations along the Yukon River, for hundreds of years, at a time when there was no such thing as a border between what became Yukon and Alaska. One of these communities was the fish camp of Tr’ochëk, at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers (where Dawson City is now). However, when gold-mad prospectors arrived by the thousands during the Klondike Gold Rush, the First Nation moved some five kilometres downstream and set up the community of Moosehide. Gatherings were not held during and after the gold rush. However, as a means of bringing people from all Nations together for a celebration of the Han First Nation culture and traditions, based on the traditional potlash, the gatherings were revived in 1993 by Elders and interested citizens of THFN, at Moosehide. I set up a tent at the gathering and invited participants to share their sasquatch experiences with me. One such person was an Elder, a First Nation gentleman from Eagle, Alaska, who took the time to share his encounter. Eagle is located some 10 kilometres from the Canadian border, along the western shore of the Yukon River, while the First Nation village is only 6 kilometres from the border. In the fall of 2004, the Elder was hunting moose, along the river, with three other members of that First Nation. By late afternoon they were just about at the YukonAlaska border when they decided to set up camp for the night. They found a suitable location and two of the hunters started unloading gear from the boat, setting up the tent and campsite while the other two gathered wood for a fire.

PHOTO: Pixabay

Hunters claim to have witnessed a sasquatch swimming in the Yukon River While gathering wood, one of them heard what he thought was a baby crying—Odd to hear such a thing along the river, he thought. He thought perhaps there was a family group hunting nearby. He called his companion over and started walking in the direction of the crying. At one point, amongst large boulders, they observed a large, bipedal creature, which he described as a female sasquatch that was holding the hand of a very young sasquatch who was crying loudly. The two hunters immediately stopped walking and, at that moment, the mother noticed them. What happened next really intrigued the hunters … They witnessed something never seen before. The mother placed her baby on her upper back and the young one held her (or his) mother by her long hair. Then the mother gathered a few dead trees that were lying closeby on the shore, and while holding on to those (sort of wrapping both arms around them), she threw herself into the Yukon River. She used the trees as a flotation device and paddled with her feet, navigating the river for herself and her baby by taking advantage of the swift current. As she swam away, the two

hunters called to their friends, telling them to look at the river, and they, too, observed the mother swimming across the river with her young one on her back. The gentleman I talked to mentioned that he and his companions had shared this unique encounter with other members of their First Nation at Eagle, none of whom had ever witnessed such action before. He had never shared this information with anyone outside of his community. As part of my investigations, over a number of years, researching sasquatch-related websites, reading thousands of reports and talking with colleagues, I had never come across any mention of such sasquatch activity by this legendary bushman (in this case, a “wild bush woman.” Besides the swimming, which had been observed by many in the past, the significance of this story was the youngster, which showed the family aspect of the sasquatch phenomenon and which went hand in hand with previous reports of a pregnant sasquatch observed in 2008 (in my fourth column), and a newborn sasquatch observed in 2000, which I wrote about in my book Nahganne: Tales of the Northern Sasquatch. n

OLD-FASHIONED CLEMENTINE MARMALADE PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

C

lementines always come in bundles, and while I always want to eat the whole thing, there are inevitably some that end up sitting on the counter getting hard. Marmalade is a great way to use up that fruit, and adding some of the flavours of the classic cocktail—the Old Fashioned—is a fun play on a classic preserve.

INGREDIENTS ❑ 10 clementines ❑ 2 cups white sugar ❑ 1 cup brown sugar ❑ 1 shot bourbon ❑ A few drops of bitters, optional

Clementines

Juiced clementines

Sliced clementine rind

Adding sugar and getting ready to simmer

METHOD: 1. Halve and squeeze juice of all the clementines into a 2-cup measure, remove all seeds and discard. Thinly slice all the rinds in a pot. Fill the 2-cup measure with juice and water to the 2-cup line. Pour the water and juice over the rinds and add white sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook until the rinds are soft, about 30 minutes. Add the brown sugar and continue to cook until marmalade is thick. 2. Let cool completely then add the shot of bourbon and mix well. Add bitters, if using. Keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a month. n

CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE CHIP, CRANBERRY AND WALNUT COOKIES

PHOTOS: Miche Genest

E

arlier this year, I asked a lawyer friend for a favour: I needed help navigating the legal system for another friend. We went for a coffee, my lawyer friend and I, and I noted how much he enjoyed the café’s Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie. I filed it away. He gave me some great information (different from advice I’ve learned in the world of law) and we parted … He had to go back to work; and me, to go home. On the way there, I stopped off at the grocery store and picked up a tin of cocoa powder and a packet of chocolate chips. You see, my friend would have been embarrassed if I had offered to pay him, and he doesn’t drink alcohol, so a bottle of wine was out. Cookies were the perfect solution. Cookies often are the perfect solution—when you need to thank someone, apologize (after you’ve done the tricky part, with words), provide comfort in tough times, make friends with a new neighbour—the intended recipient will rarely turn away a batch of home-baked cookies. So go ahead, drop off a batch for the staff and volunteers at your favourite not-forprofit (call first), or for the guy who fixed the niggling problem in your van, or the friend who loaned you the dress for the party. If the shy, goofy smile my lawyer friend cracked (when I gave him his cookies) is any indication, your offering will be most appreciated. Pro Tip: I learned that brown sugar is absolutely key if you want your cookies to spread and have that lovely, crispy chewiness. To my instructor and fellow students in my writing class at YukonU, with whom I shared a non-spready batch, thank you for not minding.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

• 1 cup butter at room temperature

• Preheat oven to 350 F and place racks in the middle of the oven. Line 4 baking sheets with parchment paper.

• 1 cup white sugar • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

• In a large bowl, beat butter until light and fluffy. Add in sugars and beat until thoroughly combined. Whisk in eggs, one at a time. Whisk in vanilla.

• 2 eggs

• In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.

• 2 tsp vanilla

• Stir dry mixture into wet mixture until thoroughly combined. Stir in chocolate chips, walnuts and cranberries.

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• Drop cookie dough from a spoon onto baking sheets, spacing dough two inches apart (cookies will spread). Try to get 15 on each sheet.

• 3/4 cup cocoa powder, sifted • 2 tsp baking soda

• Bake for 12–15 minutes until bottoms are shiny and cookies are firm at the edges, but still soft in the middle. They’ll firm up more as they cool.

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• Remove from oven and allow to cool on pan, on a wire rack, for 5 minutes.

• 1 cup chocolate chips

• Transfer cookies from the pan to the rack and allow to cool to room temperature before storing in a cookie tin. (I am sure nobody will mind if a few warm cookies disappear from the rack.) Will keep for up to 10 days.

• 1 cup chopped walnuts • 1 cup wild low-bush cranberries

Makes 60 2-inch cookies.

EXPLORING PERU: PART 2

fter following the hot and dry Peruvian coast north to Lambayeque, we turned east. In a single day we left the Pacific Ocean, crossed the Abra de Porculla (the lowest pass through the Andes) and descended into the cloud forest of the Amazonas Region. Along the way, we saw rice growing along the highway, we bought a huge box of enormous and delicious mangos for an incredible bargain (which we ate for the rest of the trip) and we marvelled at how, in one day, we were able to experience such amazing changes in geography.

what we would still encounter en route. Each region we passed through was different, with its own unique textiles, special types of food and distinct dialects of Quechua. Our journey traced the spine of Peru southwards, blessing us with the experi-

lated to the Chachapoya culture. Gocta Waterfall Located about an hour’s drive from Chachapoyas (plus a hike of several hours), Gocta is one of the world’s tallest waterfalls, with a height of 771 metres. The area around it is home to a wide variety of birds and orchids. There are several lodges close by and you can do part of the hike on horseback if you prefer.

Overflowing river on the way to Kuélap We were travelling in February; and February in the Andes is the wet season. It’s the only month where the Inca Trail is closed and where floods and mudslides are quite common all along the mountainous and tropical parts of Peru. As we began to travel south, after a few days in Chachapoyas, we encountered rivers overflowing their banks, and violent thunderstorms on narrow mountain roads. We wondered how we would make it all the way back to Cusco and

Inca civilization referred to as the “Warriors of the Clouds.” The city of Chachapoyas lies at 2,335 metres above sea level and can be reached via flights from Lima, as well as by bus. It’s the jumping-off point to visit a variety of archeological sites and attractions re-

and sit on top of a high ridge overlooking the valley and river below. The circular structures exhibit incredibly sophisticated stone masonry skills and are easily accessible via a cable-car system constructed in 2017.

10 PERUVIAN ROAD RULES 1. Honking is everything Taxis honk at potential passengers; drivers honk on curvy mountain roads, to prevent collisions; and cars honk at pedestrians and stray dogs, as well as at each other, while yelling insults and profanities. Honking in Peru is its own kind of language.

2. Speed limits are hypothetical

Technically, there are speed limits, but in my experience they don’t seem to be monitored; most drivers drive whatever speed they want, which is generally at least 20 km/hr faster than the “official” speed limit.

3. Right turns on red are not permitted

Strangely enough, this rule is actually respected for the most part.

4. Not tailgating is seen as a weakness

If you drive with a safe and responsible distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you, others will see this as an invitation to squeeze into the space and dangerously cut you off.

5. Don’t use your turn signal

If you use your turn signal, you’re letting other drivers know what you intend to do and they will undoubtedly take it as a sign to speed up, to prevent you from merging or turning.

6. Beware of motorcycles

Motorcycles generally don’t position themselves in the center of their lane, in Peru. Instead, they stick dangerously close to the outside part of the road, giving the impression that there’s enough space for cars to pass, which may not necessarily be true, especially when there’s oncoming traffic speeding towards you or when the motorcyclist has had a few too many cervezas (beers) and begins to swerve.

7. Right-of-way belongs to whoever feels entitled to it

This is usually the largest or oldest (or, best of all, largest and oldest) vehicle; this can be observed especially well in roundabouts when an ancient Fuso truck enters and all the cars already in the roundabout have to stop.

8. Fixing a flat tire is cheap

Pull up to any rundown tire shop at the side of the road and you’ll be able to get your punctured tire repaired in a matter of minutes for somewhere between S/10 to S/15 (about $3).

9. Taxis don’t have meters

Taxis are a fast and generally inexpensive way to get around in Peruvian cities but be sure to negotiate the price before getting in. Taxis generally don’t have taximeters and a taxi driver can charge you whatever they want if you don’t ask before getting in how much the ride will be. If the price seems too high, just wait for another taxi to drive by and see if they’ll be more reasonable. Also, many “taxis” in Peru are not actually registered official taxis. Informal taxis are very common and basically anyone can put a “taxi” sign on their private car and pick up passengers as long as they are able to avoid police checkpoints.

10. Yellow/amber traffic lights mean “speed up”

If your green light turns to yellow, there’s no need to slow down; most lights, signs and road markings are only recommendations in Peru … Just remember to honk and you’ll fit right in.

Cumbemayo Located about a half an hour away from Cajamarca, the Archaeological Complex of Cumbemayo includes a vast stone forest (Los Frailones), as well as an astounding pre-Incan aqueduct that dates back to 1500 BCE. It’s a place that is Mountain roads in Northern Peru rumoured to have been used to worship water; and ferred to as the “Machu Picchu of whether you’re drawn to the the North.’’ Located in La Liberhydraulic engineering, the tad Region, its rugged position on top of a highland plateau, and its spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, also feels reminiscent of Kuélap. OMG!

Old guy best remembered for taking a school bus through the McDonald’s Drive Thru, in about 1987, and ordering 52 chocolate shakes.

IT’S A SELF-EVIDENT OBVIOSITY! Dedicated to the memory of Mr. Kennedy who taught grade-7 science, French (with a Scot’s accent) and music, many years ago: he coined the term obviosity and beat us over the head with it when we gave an incorrect answer in science class

Tis a self-evident obviosity that ... 1. If you put short, fat things on the tall shelf of the refrigerator, you have to move ’em to a short, fat-stuff shelf so you can get ‘yer milk carton and ‘yer juice jug in. Grrr! 2. When you’re talking about atomic energy, spell nuclear and sound it out before speaking! I don’t know where the hell you get nuculer. Also, what’s a nuculus? Look it up in yer Funk & Wagnalls. 3. You don’t need a course in Latin in order to pronounce et cetera. Just have a look at the abbreviation: It’s etc., isn’t it? Not “exc.,” hey? 4. Irregardless is a double negative. 5. You “orient” yourself or you have an “orientation.” You don’t go to an information booth to get “informated,” so why would you look around to get “orientated.” 6. Gift is a noun, give is the verb. So don’t “gift” me any more crap. Give it to me if you must. 7. The past tense of give is gave, not gifted. Gifted is also rarely an adjective. This time, perhaps, it is pejorative, describing people who misuse or mispronounce 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, above. Yeah, who am I to talk? 8. If there’s bear poop on the garden path, it’s not your day to do the weeding and watering. 9. Dirty water pumped from the creek is gonna plug yer drip lines in the garden. 10. The four food groups are Fast, Fried, Snack and Junk. 11. See 10, above: No salt on yer fries is a rip-off perpetrated

by health-food fanatics on yer favourite drive-through. 12. See 11, above: If ya grump at them, they’ll give ya enough packets of salt that ya won’t hafta mention it again for a long time. 13. The A&W parking lot is NOT a thru street to Superstore. 14. See 13, above: Speed limits don’t apply here, judging from some drivers’ behaviour. 15. If you get ‘yer butt out into the intersection while waiting for the yellow light, you might (just might) get around that left-hand corner. 16. See 15, above: Nobody else will. Thanks a lot. 17. The speed limit in Rabbit’s Foot Canyon is 90 kilometres. If you’re going 50 and somebody’s tailgating you, it’s ‘yer own fault. 18. See 17, above: Braking while the guy behind you is tailgating, is asking for road rage. 19. See 18, above: He’s already upset. Get moving or get out of the way. 20. See 19, above: It’s almost always a “he.” 21. A Yield sign just means you don’t have to stop. 22 See 21, above: A Stop sign entering the Klondike Highway apparently means the same thing. 23. Wind chill used to be an analog for the temperature at which exposed flesh freezes. 24. See 23, above: It may have some application to cooling ‘yer coffee or a spoon of hot soup, but it won’t freeze the same. 25. See 24, above: It has no effect whatsoever on your ability to start your car (unless your fingers are frozen): it’s ambient temperature that’s gelled your 15w40. 26. Cars abandoned at the side

of the highway are a direct result of tipping fees. A surge of wrecks taken to rural landfills occurred in the period just before rural tipping fees came into effect. Abandoned vehicles began to appear immediately thereafter. 27. It makes no ecological sense to close community waste sites. Burnt hydrocarbons taking garbage to the “nearest” transfer station far outweigh the pittance gained for disposal at the same place. 28. It’s idiocy on the part of a government not to provide fire protection to an historic town. 29. The City of Whitehorse planning department is expecting dozens (if not hundreds) of cyclists, in both directions, to use the Two Mile Hill–Chilkoot Way connector. 30. See 29, above: When is unclear. 31. I’ve seen one (1) cyclist since the two-way, twolane crossing was defined. He went straight through PHOTO: Pixabay on Fourth Avenue. When you’re talking about atomic energy, spell nuclear and sound it out before speaking! 32. Never mind truckers; they’re pros. It’s tourists in their 30-foot-plus motorhomes that are going to plow the downhill-side path. Why a toonie in ‘yer pocket, that’s a tear up their sides on those giant would anybody use it? $1.75 tip for the City. The formercurbs, or block traffic trying to get 35. Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

MAKE IT A HABIT Having good visibility on snowy roads can make all the difference. You will be able to see things clearly and avoid accidents and injuries. Here are a few tips to sharpen your vision and ensure a safe drive at night. First, check your lights. It is important to check your headlights that includes fog lamps, driving lights and brake lights if they are working properly before heading out. It is also important to visit your local mechanics if your vehicle requires to adjust or change your headlight bulb or if it requires some cleaning in order to have a safe and enjoyable drive.

Elsie Jordan Elsie Jordan made the Yukon her home in 2014. She has a passion for storytelling, with a focus on family (mis)adventures featuring a unique Yukon feel to them.

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT F

amily movie nights have always been something special in my household. Starting as a kid, I still remember those Friday nights when we would all hop into the car and drive over to the local Blockbuster of Rogers Video (I grew up in Ontario) to pick out some snacks and a couple of movies to rent. It was always something I looked forward to, and occasionally I was gifted with a few new movie posters to hang on my wall. This was incredibly thrilling as a pre-teen, especially during my whole Leo/Titanic phase. As I grew up, movies continued to play a big part of my life—from hosting Lord of the Rings marathons with my sister, to watching chick flicks at sleepovers, and movie date nights with the hubby. Because of this, I am excited to continue the family tradition with my son, who is finally reaching an age where he can sit still long enough to enjoy a movie. My little guy has never really been interested in watching movies. Sure, he has been happy to watch nursery-rhyme cartoons, Blippi and YouTube videos of toy cars driving into water (don’t ask), but whenever I would try and encourage him to watch a movie with me, I was always met with a shake of his head or a flat out “No” in response. I always put it down to his age … Having only just

turned three this past summer, his not wanting to watch movies, yet, wasn’t surprising. However, his enjoyment of Paw Patrol did eventually lead him to have some interest in seeing the film that came out a few months ago. With the promise of popcorn, my son, husband and I found ourselves first in line at the Yukon Theatre to see the Mighty Pups on the big screen. It was a real delight for me to see his reaction to his first trip to the theatre.

A collection of movies at home We planned it well, picking seats at the back and the end of an aisle (just in case our boy decided he was done with the experience and wanted to leave). I was relieved to see that the theatre had filled up with other families, just like us, with little ones in tow; so I knew that it wouldn’t be too terrible if my son made a bit of noise. All of the kids were eager to see their favourite characters on the

big screen, and it helped to create an awesome family-friendly atmosphere. And, to my surprise, not only did my little boy sit through the whole movie, but he had an absolute blast of a time. I think he was mesmerized by seeing a movie on such a big screen, amongst so many other families—plus, the snacks were a neat treat, too! It made for a wonderful experience and it gave me a bit of hope that we could soon have our own movie nights at home. After all, I have an entire collection of my favourite kids’ films that I want to share with him. My husband does too. It’s funny, really. I have spoken to a lot of other parents who have said that one of the things they get most excited about when it comes to having children is the chance to connect with them over things that they grew up loving. Whether it be a favourite storybook or a cartoon, these stories meant a lot to us as kids, so getting the opportunity to share them with our own children is like experiencing it again for the first time through their eyes. It really is magical. And so, it really warmed my heart when Little Buddy told me that he wanted to watch a movie with me. He said he wanted to have a movie night with me, just like ones I had described having when I was little. Fantastic! I let him pick the film—and I wasn’t surprised when he picked Frozen. After all, so many of his

friends at school love the movie and he is already familiar with the characters and songs. We were both giddy with anticipation as we got ourselves set up on Sunday afternoon for our mommyand-son movie night. We got the couch all cozy, with blankets and some Frozen plushies. We created a platter of mostly healthy snacks (he was eager to indulge in the big Aero bar he got for Halloween), and we snuggled up as PHOTOS: Elsie Jordan the movie started. Going to see a movie at the Yukon Theatre I’m not going to lie; I teared up a litate the magic of movie storytelltle. As a movie lover, this was a special moment for me ing. It’s what I’ve always loved and I relished in it. And I couldn’t about movies; and so, to see one help but laugh out loud as he be- fully engaging my own child is a gan to scold Elsa for not being nice marvellous thing. And as the movie ended, I asked when she ran away from the palace (he’s still a little too young to him if he did indeed like the movfully get what was going on, obvi- ie. I wasn’t so sure, as he started to become a little restless towards ously). It certainly was a different ex- the end. His immediate reply was perience for me as I found myself the request to watch it again, watching him watching the film, which assured me that my wish more often than watching the of doing this again with him will screen itself. EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY Annual Northern Lights Gala Fundraising Results The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society (Society) hosted its annual Northern Lights Gala on Saturday, September 23 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse and successfully raised $65,000 for the Society’s Every Student, Every Day funding program to support projects designed to curb the high rates of school absenteeism and increase Yukon student attendance and engagement.

“With the amount raised at this year’s annual gala, we are closer to our goal of funding $400,000 in projects designed and implemented by Yukon schools, school councils, community groups and Yukon First Nations governments for the 20242025 school year,” says Society President Tara Christie. “On behalf of Every Student, Every Day, we extend our sincere thanks to the donors, community partners and volunteers who came together for this annual fundraiser.” “This year’s event would not be possible without the generosity of Yukoners supporting Every Student, Every Day,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “We are pleased that the Yukon Government has also increased their funding commitment from $70,000 to $100,000 for the 2024-2025 school year. These dollars will make a big difference to support student attendance programs for Yukon children and youth.” Every Student, Every Day was established in 2012 to help address student attendance challenges in the Yukon and raise funds that schools and communities can apply for to develop and undertake innovative and local solutions which support student success. The next fundraising events are the annual VGCX Charity Golf Tournament on July 5, 2024 and the next annual Northern Lights Gala on October 19, 2024.

Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society President Tara Christie and Victoria Gold Corp President & CEO John McConnell address the event attendees at the annual Northern Lights Gala, which raised $65,000 for the Society’s Every Student, Every Day funding program to support increased student attendance in the territory.

The Eagle Gold Mine is situated within Victoria Gold’s 100 per cent-owned Dublin Gulch Property located approximately 375 kilometres north of Whitehorse and 85 kilometres north, northeast of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
