HOT TAKES

There is one thing FROM PETER JICKLING stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come.”

eter Jickling was part of What’s Up Yukon’s editorial team from 2012–2015, during which he wrote a weekly column called “Jickling’s Jabberings.” He essentially had free reign to write whatever he wanted—humorous anecdotes, touching real-life stories and hottake opinion pieces, among other things. He’d had the idea to put some of his stories together into a book, for some years, but it took a backseat to other projects of his, until recently. “After I left What’s Up Yukon, towards the end of 2015, it was always on my mind that I should compile a little book and put it out … of a selection of these columns,” he said. “It had been on my mind for a while.” Jickling’s book, titled I Believe This is Not the End: 52 Hot Takes, was in the works for close to a decade. In 2016, he started choosing stories and giving them an initial edit, but shelved the project for some time when he took up poetry and explored some other creative outlets. This spring, Jickling revisited the idea and decided it was time to finish his book. “It was almost more for my own sense of completion, or finishing the circle, than anything else,” he said. When Jickling picked his project back up, he was initially worried that too much time had passed since the columns were written, and he wasn’t sure how they’d aged. He found this wasn’t so much of an issue, however, as lots of his stories delved into topics that could be relevant at any time. “They still seemed like they

would be entertaining for a modern audience,” he said. “So, I just picked up where I left off.” Given that Jickling wrote about pretty much anything he wanted in “Jickling’s Jabberings,” within the confines of a family-friendly magazine, the selections that made it into his book cover a variety of topics. He recalled the public’s reception to certain stories, as they came out, and asked friends and family which ones they’d like to see make the cut. “The topics really range,” he said. “I wrote one about losing my grandparents; all in the same year, I wrote one about why Theroen Fleury should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame; there’s one about cannibalism and kind of my own take on cannibalism; there’s one on Calvin and Hobbes, one of my favourite comic strips growing up, there’s one about The Tragically Hip; there’s one about drinking beer in the shower; there’s one about selling my old car and getting a new car. There’s 52 of them, altogether, and they really range across topics quite widely. A lot of them are humorous, but not all of them. Some are quite sad or quite serious, so it really covers a broad spectrum.” To publish his book, Jickling started his own publishing company called Icebound Editions. He wasn’t sure that there would be a market among publishers, to put out a compilation of decade-old and previously published columns from the Yukon, and he’d always thought it would be fun to run a

Peter Jickling has released his new book, I Believe This is Not the End: 52 Hot Takes book publishing company, so it was a move that made sense. “I decided to just do the whole process, from the very beginning to the very end, and see how it felt, see if I liked it, and see if it was something worth repeating,” Jickling said. “What better way to start than with your own book? It was sort of an experiment to see what the process of publishing a book would feel like.” Jickling is hosting a book launch party on Nov. 5 at the Woodcutter’s Blanket, during which he’ll be reading a handful of the stories from his book, and selling and signing copies. The doors open at 7 p.m., the readings will start at 7:30, and the event is set to wrap up at 10. It will be an open house for people to drop in, pick up a book and chat with Jickling. “I think it’s like anything else,” Jickling said. “When you’ve got something you worked hard on that you’ve thought a lot about and now it’s finally coming to fruition, you get excited. I get to have a party, and all my friends can come and buy my book and that’s cool too.” ■

THE YUKON REMEMBERS The Whitehorse Remembrance Day Ceremony will take place Nov. 11 at the Canada Games Centre (CGC)

ver the past few years, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 254’s Remembrance Day Ceremony, in Whitehorse, has faced numerous challenges, being that it is a large event open to the public, with various COVID restrictions. With things mostly back to normal, as they have been since the pre-pandemic days, the small but dedicated team behind the ceremony is hard at work making sure everything is ready to go. “We’re always busy prepping for this thing; we started a couple months ago,” said Whitehorse Legion president, Joseph Mewett. “The Remembrance Day Ceremony is on the 11th and there are lots of moving parts for it. Trying to get everything together is good, though. It’s not a small thing.” Mewett said there have been some “growing pains,” over the past few years, in grappling with the restrictions placed on large public gatherings. With some smaller versions and livestreamed footage taking over the ceremony during the heights of the pandemic, last year, the ceremony was held in its usual form, but Mewett believes some people were still nervous about attending large gatherings. “This year, we’re getting a lot of interest because the paranoia is dying down a little bit. 2022 Remembrance Day ceremony at the Canada Games Centre (CGC) are getting used to it and going with the flow,” said Mewett. “We’re hoping this year will be a bigger turnout. The CGC is putting out more chairs on the floor, from my understanding, because they don’t have the spacing restrictions they had last year, so that’s better.”

In addition to the large public ceremony, the Legion also runs a smaller ceremony in each of Whtehorse’s three retirement residences. A few years ago, when Mewett was in the military, he participated in some ceremonies in retirement residences down south, meant for those who

weren’t able to make it to their community’s main ceremonies due to mobility restrictions or health reasons. “The older people are the ones that, in some cases, lived it or

experienced it,” Mewett said. “When we moved up here, we decided to take it to them. We basically took the Canada Games Centre ceremony and condensed it. We go in, myself and two or three other veterans; we have to keep it small because they don’t have a lot of space and we don’t want to bring outside contaminants in. But we go in, do a little bit of a welcome, play “O Canada!” for them and do a little bit of a ceremony.” These smaller ceremonies don’t happen right on Remembrance Day, but in the few days leading up to the main ceremony. Typically, they are only around 15–20 minutes long, and Mewett said the community members appreciate still being able to take part in a ceremony for Remembrance Day. He also said that sometimes the veterans stay for up to an hour talking and sharing stories with the residents. During COVID, the Legion was not able to visit the homes at all, so Mewett is looking forward to bringing the small

ceremonies back this year. With the public ceremony, Mewett believes being open to the public and having public involvement is an important component. “The public has relatives that served,” he said. “There’s a family history there and sometimes that history affects the current families. They’ve heard the talk of things but might not actually understand it. It’s important for a couple of reasons: It’s a community event and the community needs to get together and remember this. It’s history and we don’t want history to be repeated. History can’t be changed, but we don’t want it to be repeated.” While younger generations today may not have direct family members who served in WWI, Mewett noted that there are hundreds of veterans of different wars living in the Yukon, including three WWII veterans, and many people might have family ties to some of them. Understanding history is still important for those

who did not experience it, and attending a ceremony is a different experience than learning about history in class, according to Mewett. “People have to realize there are still veterans here, and that’s part of the reason for this,” he said. Mewett also attends the Remembrance Day ceremonies in the schools and hopes the students find it valuable to gain some insight from veterans themselves. “When you learn history, you’re doing the bookwork,” he said. “It’s totally different to hear a veteran’s perspective on things.” This year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony will once again be held Nov. 11 at the CGC. The Cenotaph Guard marches at 10:25 a.m., so everyone is asked to be seated before they begin. The event is open for the public to attend and will include a speech from veteran John Nysted. HOT DOG, RED ONION AND RUSSET-POTATO HASH PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy

I

miss summer already, and to

me summer means endless hot dogs. Here’s a quick and cheap hash that has some flavours of summer. If you don’t have cooked potatoes in your fridge, poke raw ones with a fork, a few times, and microwave them until they’re soft.

Serves 2. INGREDIENTS: ❑ 4 Tbsp butter, divided ❑ 5 hot dogs, sliced ❑ 1 small red onion, finely chopped ❑ 3 cooked russet potatoes, coarsely chopped ❑ Salt and pepper, as desired ❑ 2 eggs ❑ Sliced green onions, to garnish

Chopped red onion

Chopped potato

Hot dogs and onions cooking

Add the potato

METHOD: 1. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. When melted, add the chopped hot dogs and red onions and cook until onions are soft and hot dogs begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped potato and cook until the potato begins to brown in spots, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, season to taste with salt and pepper and keep warm. 2. Add remaining butter into a nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. When melted, break the eggs into the pan and cook until whites are set and yolks are runny. Divide hash between two plates, top each one with an egg and sprinkle with sliced green onions and a dollop of hot sauce. ■

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

An old but timeless concept that reaches down through generations

I

hear lots of doom-and-gloom talk about the rising costs of food, gas, wood and electricity … in articles, radio and TV commentaries, online stories and opinions expressed in my family. I’m not the kind of person that can completely shut out the news or be immune to the tragic stories of people losing their homes or being displaced from their communities due to wildfire and floods. My heart ached for the people of Old Crow and Mayo this past summer. I checked regularly with family and friends in B.C., Alberta and Ontario, after news about wind and rainstorms, fires and road closures. Our proposed road trips south to visit them were cancelled due to these climatechange-induced events. Some of you may feel secure and prepared for any Alaska Highway closures, with a stockpile of food in the freezer and pantry. Perhaps you have a generator, in case of power outages, a wood stove as backup, and a ready wood supply. You may be fortunate to have a roof over your head, with no mortgage or rising rent to worry about. Although my family and I feel relatively secure, I am concerned for those in our community who are experiencing homelessness or who are without a permanent home, or who rely on the food bank for their weekly supply of food. According to the Point-inTime Homelessness Count, at least 197 people in Whitehorse experienced homelessness on April 19, 2023. What will winter bring for them and our community? What “old” models for family and communal living are worth considering? Now we’re seeing various generations under one roof: grandparents, parents and adult children sharing in the costs and

Canada Food Board SOS poster that circulated during wartime and promoted saving and preserving food maintenance of the household. Different acquaintances of ours happily shared property with their sons and family, who built separate living quarters for them on the same property. Both gain mutual support from each other, as

well as making it more affordable. Trust and good communication are essential for this to work. According to the latest Census of Canada report, 418,370 bedrooms remain empty in seniorowned homes across the Lower

Mainland of B.C. I wonder what it is like in the Yukon? Some seniors in other provinces and countries are using home-sharing services to matchup with younger adults. The matches are carefully vetted for criminal and other background checks to ensure they are the right fit. Professional counselling services are provided if there is a need to resolve conflicts. Ideally, the older person receives some companionship and support with household tasks; and the younger person, a financial break on the rent—and friendship with an older person. As an older person, an Elder, a knowledge keeper, a baby boomer, what can you and I do? A large percentage of community volunteers are seniors who provide their knowledge and skills and energy to various boards, committees and community organizations. Our extra energy and time may go towards the care of grandchildren or older friends and family members. Many of us have skills (learned from experience or from our own parents and grandparents) that can be passed on. I’ve rekindled my skills in darning socks, patching jeans and reusing fabric from old clothing or linens. My mother was the ultimate recycler. As a kid growing up in the ’50s and ’60s, I felt embarrassed by sandwiches packed in reused, plastic bread bags for school lunches. Eventually, my mother caved in to the idea of using plastic wrap and Ziplock sandwich bags. When we were cleaning out her house for her move to a seniors’ residence, we discovered a stockpile of plastic bread bags and cottage-cheese and other hard-plastic containers that she collected. “Waste not, want not” was my parents’ motto, and the motto of their genera-

tion. Many of us are reapplying those lessons learned from our parents and grandparents. We grew up on vegetables grown in our backyard garden. I helped pick and process them for pickling, canning, freezing and drying. Many of these skills I use today, although I admit I’m not as skilled as my parents in either gardening or food preservation. As a nurse in Japan, my mother used traditional medicinal teas and methods like massage and moxibustion (burning sticks of herbal mugwort placed on pressure points on the body), to treat various ailments. As a “cocky” teenager, I wondered why they just didn’t go to a Western doctor for a pill to cure their ailments! It would benefit all of us if we shared knowledge and skills among the generations. What traditional knowledge do they or you have that can be applied to, today, in this time of rising living costs and uncertainty? What skills of hunting, fishing, preserving food, making herbal medicines and creating and fixing clothing or tools can you learn and apply today? Check out the Repair Café workshops and community gatherings through Yukonstruct.com, Computers for Schools and Raven ReCentre (recycling), to learn how to reuse, repair and repurpose clothing and other goods. Support and learn about Extended Producer Responsibility (yukon.ca/en/ learn-about-extended-producerresponsibility). We can forge links to create and support all of us in our community—young and old. How can we apply the “Waste not, want not” motto? ■

NAME : AMMANDA PARTRIDGE working with me!

Skills Yukon Affiliation: National Technical Committee member

What does a regular day on the job look like? Every day is different because of the variety of training I have taken: No two days are the same. I start my day by setting up and looking forward to the guests I will get to see. I have been in the industry a long time, so my guests are like friends and it feels so good to build those relationships with them and to help them feel their best.

Age: 40 Trade & Certifications: Certified Cosmetologist— Esthetics Current workplace: Elements Hair Studio and Day Spa and president of Elements Esthetics Academy Tell us about your experience in the trade sector so far? I have worked in all aspects of my trade—from educator, to employee, to entrepreneur—and I am now opening a school! What was the process of opening your salon like? Opening my salon was fairly easy because I took over an existing business and there was a good clientele that came with that. I had also worked in Yukon, for a few years, building my own clientele, so I had a great start. It definitely would have been more challenging if I didn’t have that clientele intact! What were your breakthrough moments in the process of opening the school? Opening the school has been a long process; I have so much respect for educators and educational facilities, as I now know how hard they had to work to make it happen! My biggest breakthrough was hosting my first single skills course, and I am so looking forward to having my first diploma course in the new year! I’m most excited about my small class sizes making it a really personal experience for the students and me! How did you start exploring the trades career path? Origin-

If you met someone who was looking at exploring the trades sector, what piece of advice would you give them? Do it! It is an incredibly rewarding career path. There is constant change, constant room for growth. It is a lifelong journey, so start now.

Ammanda, after winning Business Leader of the Year for Elements Hair Studio and Day Spa (and her idea to launch Elements Esthetics Academy) ally, I went to university after high school because I had received a full scholarship, but I always felt a pull to the trades. I enjoy the creativity and technicality involved in aesthetics, so I decided to pursue it, and I’ve never looked back. It has been the most-rewarding career and there is so much room for growth! Was there someone who inspired your journey into the trades sector? My mom. She went back to school when I was 11 years old. She was a single mom with four kids and showed me it’s never too late to chase the dream. How has your trade and/or technology career made your life better? I get to spend my days making people feel good about themselves; I have the best job in the world! I have enjoyed travel opportunities, educational opportunities and personal fulfillment in my career. I have also had the pleasure of watching other women succeed in their career while

What is the most-interesting project you have worked on? My experience teaching esthetics in Old Crow for Yukon College [Yukon University] is what inspired me to start a school here! Old Crow was such a unique experience: I met amazing people and the community was so welcoming and hospitable. Is there something about your trade that you think not many people know? We make an impact—and not just from the cosmetic value of what we do. We are caretakers, and guests give us the honour of choosing us to be part of their best days (weddings, new babies, et cetera), but also their most challenging (after losses, periods of personal distress). To be chosen to support someone— not just in their best times, but

PHOTOS: Ammanda Partridge

Ammanda, unleashing her “inner scientist” as she performs her favourite service - a facial also their most challenging—is a testament to what we provide for guests, beyond the cosmetic effects. Where do you see your career in five to 10 years? I will have a thriving school and support industry growth in the Yukon by training new service providers who will hopefully bring their services to the communities.

As the newest National Technical Committee member of Skills Canada Yukon, what do you hope to achieve with Team Yukon? I hope to build excitement and awareness about our trade. I hope to correct misinformation about our industry and to support young people in pursuing an incredibly rewarding career through mentorship and coaching! ■

Dennis Allen

INDIAN PIE

Dennis and his band’s experience with the “pretendian”

A

ll this talk about Buffy Sainte-Marie’s true identity reminded me of the first band I was ever in. Me and my buddies had a hairball idea to approach the manager of a bar called The Trading Post, in Inuvik, and tell him that we had a band and would play for free if he let us. He agreed. He told us we could do the Saturday-afternoon jam and if someone actually danced and no one threw any beer bottles at us, he’d hire us on the spot. I only knew two songs all the way through, “Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode,” and my cousin Derek knew a couple of tearjerkers. The third stooge, Eddy, knew one or two and we figured we could bullshit our way through the jam with what we knew. When the owner asked us what the name of our band was, Eddy blurted out, “Indian Pride!” If you did the DNA on three of us, you’d be hard-pressed to find a big toe, between the three of us, that was full-blooded Indian. He tore off a flap from a case of Five Star Whiskey and scribbled “Saturday Jamboree with Indian Pride” and thumbtacked it to the front door. I had an electric guitar that was missing one string, but I plugged it in, anyway, into the house amplifier and damned near fried myself from all the loose wiring. Derek borrowed a bass from the church. It had a neck more crooked than the preacher’s. Eddie taped the words, “Indian Pride” on the front of the house drum kit, with hockey tape, and our band was official.

PHOTO: Dennis Allen Derek had the bright idea to smoke a joint before we went onstage, and we spent the first halfhour trying to figure out how to get the sound system working and then untangling our feet from all the wires. He was testing the mic and standing in front of the speaker when Eddy turned the volume to ten and almost made Derek’s ears bleed from the feedback. The owner came running up from behind the bar and threatened to throw us out if we didn’t get the damned jam going. When we finally figured it out, I started singing. Derek was playing

bass in the wrong key and wrong time signature, and Eddy was playing a beat that, to this day, I’ve still never heard of. There were only a few people in the bar and, as drunk as they were, even they couldn’t make sense of our version of “Bobby McGee.” I could have kissed Eddy for finally playing an outro to indicate the song was done. Derek cleared his throat and called out, “‘Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.’” “What key?” I asked him. “I don’t know,” he replied. “Well, sing it so I can find the

key.” It took us five minutes of me leaning in to hear him sing while I tried to find out what key he was singing in. This drunk guy walked up to the stage and told us our guitars were out of tune. “Do you know how to tune it?” I asked him. He stepped onstage but fell backwards onto the drums. The owner came running up and was fuming. In the meantime, the “R” and the “D” in the word Pride had peeled off and the words read “Indian P i e.” Somebody yelled out, “Who the (expletive) is Indian Pie?”

The owner growled at us through gritted teeth, “Sing a (expletive) song or get the (expletive) off the stage.” (If looks could kill, they’d of been embalming us on the spot.) Derek cleared his throat again and started singing. He forgot the second verse and ended up humming it and making up the words to the chorus. I don’t believe in miracles, but when this couple got up and waltzed all the way through the song, I changed my mind … so, the next time you meet a “pretendian,” think of Indian Pie. ■

She’s a 1-year-old Lab Pitbull Cross.

Although Zeus is a senior dog, he is filled with life. He’s a big fan of toys and treats and knows all the important commands. He loves going for walks, all while sporting his parka in preparation for the colder weather ahead. He hasn’t shown much interest in other animals, seemingly preferring to mind his own business. With his small size and high energy, we believe he would do well in a mildly active family capable of giving him the opportunity to live out his golden years.

Soongaii came to us all the way from Old Crow. She’s a very loving girl and has a sweet disposition. She adores getting attention from anyone she can. She likes to go for walks and play in the yard. She’s very treat motivated, which will make training a little easier. She’s generally good with other dogs, but proper introductions should be made. She gets wiggly when she’s excited and loves getting butt scratches.

If you are interested in adopting Zeus or Soongai please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards them. Note: Please submit only 1 application, noting your first choice. SHELTER HOURS: Tuesdays - Fridays 12pm-6pm, Saturdays - 10am-6pm

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5

CYCLING UTAH B

Goldilock picking her porridge, sticking to the middle is always an option and we did just that. In the same vein, being both averse to touristic areas (ditto on the crowded cities front), there would be no Bryce Canyon, Moab or Salt Lake City on the itinerary. Instead, we cycled We made it to the pass up the Koosharem Valley through a mix of small towns, farmlands and low mountain passes. I had planned a route in a figure 8: two loops, upper and lower, with a connecting location in the middle (of Salina, Utah), which we would pass through twice. Our car was left parked at the top of the

upper loop in the small town of Mona. From Mona, we cycled south on rural roads, going away from the busy Highway 15. We camped a night at the beautiful Yuba State Park, which we had to ourselves (given the time of the year). Next, cycling to the town of Scipio, at the valley bottom; and later, to its high-altitude reservoir. Poor in water but rich in farm lands, Utah and many more western states have large bodies of water (often man-made) for irrigation purposes. These lakes, called reservoirs, are vital for the farming industry. They look natural, for the most part, but oftentimes are polluted with algae bloom and cow dung. Despite those rather offensive qualities, we camped at reservoirs more than once. For frugal travellers like us, the U.S. government maintains free or cheap campgrounds on their shores. After Scipio reservoir, a last climbing effort brought us to the top of the pass, where a long descent to Salina followed. We had cycled the first half of the upper loop. Traffic converging from Highway 89 and Highway 70 made

A rural road passing through farmland in Central Utah

These were the thoughts on our minds this past September, touring in Central Utah. The beehive state presented itself as a fine choice for two amateur tourers like my boyfriend Mark and I. We both liked mountains but didn’t want to climb too much on our loaded bikes. We wanted to drive to our trip location, and since we were already in southern B.C. for the summer, staying in the western part of North America was ideal. And we both fancied arid climates. Utah it was. Between low desertic plains and renowned mountain peaks, Utah is a land of extremes—but like

Cycling away from Yuba State Park Salina a restless place despite its small size. It didn’t help that our campground had its tenting area right beside a bustling boulevard. We dug out the earplugs at night time. But not everything was lost in the noise. We were visiting the USA, afterall, so we treated ourselves to burgers and fries from a local American diner off Main Street in Salina. Past Salina, we were met with quieter roads and kept cycling south into remote areas on the lower loop. Seeing rural Utah and its people was intriguing … enriching, to us. More than one local scratched their heads at us for mispronouncing Bible-derived town names, exposing our status as outsiders and non-believers, as Utah is the “Grand Central” of Mormon faith in the U.S. We also got used to speeding motorcycles on highways—its operators bareheaded, as no law in Utah forced anyone to wear a helmet. Ranchlands were omnipresent around us, as well as farmlands. Cactuses sided corn fields, cattle grazed at the foot of steep slopes where one or two escapee cows roamed around. These

1,400-pound Houdinis would come straight at us, with intense curiosity, from nearby fields, so much so that we didn’t always know how to handle the situation. “Don’t look it in the eyes.” “Try speaking ‘Cow,’” we advised each other, passing them as carefully as possible. At the bottom of the lower loop was the most scenic stretch: Kingston Canyon Road. This quiet road connecting two valleys sat at the bottom of impressive red canyon walls. Hoodoos and large caves dotted its contour. Past the canyon road, we cycled back north and upwards in the Koosharem Valley, reaching Salina, once again, a few days later. This time, we skipped the noisy campground and stayed in a cheap motel for the night, watching a rerun of Dirty Dancing on cable TV. After we were well-rested, the last half of the upper loop was completed in four days. Then, back to the car after about two-and-a-half weeks on the saddle, we looked at our nicely tanned shins and finally recovered the rain jackets—right at the bottom of our packs. ■
