2016 article in The Guardian stated that one-third of new mothers struggle to bond with their babies. For me, and still to this day, I am trying to bond with my baby.

When you grow up, TV, movies and even (it seems) every woman portrays that you will instantly love your baby and that you will coo and cah and immediately be an amazing mother. Well, hold your horses, because that is utter bollocks.

Growing a baby inside you doesn’t make you bond any more than the father does with a newborn baby. This makes it incredibly difficult when taking care of your baby.

For me, I have these annoying hormones that make me fret, every hour of every day, that our baby is still alive. My husband does not have this problem.

Maybe it’s because of my age.

I’m being told, a lot, that the older you are when you become a mother, the harder it is (the more you are set in yourself and your life). So, when this little poopmaking, sleep-sucking, feeding machine comes into your life, it is disrupted—forever. Your life has changed and you cannot go back.

You can only go forward, which is hard when you used to be able to just do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted to.

Maybe if he looked like me or I could see myself in him? He has ginger hair and blue eyes and translucent white skin. So I guess he’s like me, but looking at photos of my husband and I as newborns, he definitely looks like his dad (I guess the baby has to look

like their dad so they know it’s theirs?).

I think it would help if I could look at him and see me … easier to bond with, maybe. But he doesn’t look like me. Within the last couple of weeks he started smiling and cooing, which is rather cute.

But the majority of the time he cries and screams. So does that smile make up for the hours of screaming. No, it does not—at least not in my books. Will it get easier? I have no idea. Will I ever bond with my baby? I hope so. It hasn’t gotten easier but it won’t stop me from taking the best care of him that I can in the meantime.

Here’s what several mothers had to say about their bonding experience …

Mother #1 When did you bond with your baby? [At] 13 weeks pregnant, I started talking to her as she wiggled in my stomach. Then, the moment I started breastfeeding, we really connected.

Do you remember the moment you bonded? The moment she was born.

What advice would you give someone who doesn’t immediately bond with their baby? Talk to your baby like they understand everything you are saying. It’s interesting how much they take in.

Use your instincts. Medical advice isn’t always the best.

Mother #2 When did you bond with your baby? I bonded with my baby 15 minutes after her birth.

Do you remember the moment you bonded? When I woke up af-

ter her traumatic birth, she was pulled out of my doula’s shirt and [placed] onto my chest.

What advice would you give someone who doesn’t immediately bond with their baby? I did not have a bond with my baby for the entire pregnancy. Nothing is wrong with you if you don’t bond with your baby while they are inside you. They feel weird; they aren’t a person yet and it’s okay to just feel how you have to feel to survive the nine months.

With my first, it was probably [at] four months. Due to some health issues [that] he had and my motherhood not being what I expected, I spent a lot of time outsourcing my parenting and avoiding him. It was a tough-love conversation with my mom that snapped me out of it and, once I stopped doing those things and started spending time with him, things changed.

With my second, I felt like I was going through the motions.

I breastfed, co-slept [and took] contact naps … all the things that facilitate bonding. He wouldn’t accept care from anyone else, so I was his primary care provider but he felt like a stranger and it felt like I was babysitting and waiting for someone to pick him up, for the first year. In this case, I think it was time that helped.

I didn’t struggle to bond with my third.

Early bonding with you baby is never a guarantee she was two days old. My partner had been feeding her and changing her diapers while I was healing from my C-section, but he had to leave the hospital for a quick meeting. I was really scared to be alone with her (as I had zero experience with babies prior to this) and was hoping she’d sleep through the hour he was gone, but she started crying within fifteen

minutes and I frantically buzzed the nurse in, to ask her what I should do. The nurse laughed and said it was because she was hungry. So I had to feed her myself and then change her diapers. I held her against my chest, after that, and suddenly felt this connection with her. I was more than happy to have her lie on me instead of placing her in the bassi-

net after that.

With my second, it was different. I bonded with him when he was only six or seven months old. I couldn’t bond with him so early because I wasn’t ready for a second baby, so quickly, and I was basically doing everything on autopilot. I did love him; I just didn’t feel connected to him. The bonding started when he was less

of a potato and was rolling around lots. He would smile whenever he saw me and [he] clearly enjoyed his private moments with me while my other [one] was at daycare.

Cantalloc Aqueducts Just a few kilometres outside the city of Nazca lie a series of aqueducts that appear like a string of spirals winding down into the ground. This impressive feat of hydraulic engineering is said to have been built by the Nazca civilization, around 1,500 years ago, and is still partly used today by farmers in the arid region, to grow their crops. Underground channels carry water down from springs in the mountains and bring life to what would otherwise only be desert. Archaeologists suspect that the spiral entrances to the aqueducts also had a ceremonial function.

The Cantalloc Aqueducts one I would never have been able to experience alone. The places, the companionship, the freedom, the luxury of time. Most Peruvians never get the chance to travel around their country the way we did—to experience the places that they had to learn about in school, to see the rivers they had to memorize the names of and to interact with the distinctly different cultures and people who make up Peru.

We started in Cusco and drove west to the coast, north through Lima and all the way to Lambayeque where we turned east to Chachapoyas and then followed the Andes south, back to Cusco.

We were on the road for a total of 21 days and racked up a little over 6,000 kilometres on the odometer.

It was four of us in a Kia Rio, in blistering heat and in snow, getting delayed and rerouted by mudslides and flooding rivers.

Peru—or at least the Peru beyond Cusco. My ignorance diminished little by little with each kilometre we travelled. We saw so many incredible places and yet we only scratched the surface. At each new place we visited, I think all of us wished we would have had more time to spend there and we caught ourselves wondering if we’d ever be fortunate enough to return there one day.

For many foreigners, Peru equals Machu Picchu, the land of the Incas, llamas and maybe the Amazon jungle, Lima and Lake Titicaca.

That’s what official tourism campaigns are selling and what most trip itineraries include. And yet, Peru is so much more than that.

Here are some highlights from that trip around this varied and beautiful country. May they inspire you to explore the less famous places, wherever your travels take you.

The Nazca Lines Nazca Lines Mysterious and awe-inspiring, the Nazca Lines are a renowned group of geogylphs made by the Paracas and Nazca cultures between 500 BC and AD 500. Some say they are sacred paths used for ritualistic purposes (possibly related to water); others believe them to be a huge astronomical calendar or that they were created to be seen by deities in the

sky. The most popular way to view the numerous figurative designs and lines is to take a flight over the Nazca Desert. There’s a less expensive option, however, to at least get a glimpse of these cryptic lines. The Pan-American Highway runs right through the Nazca Lines and you can go up a viewing tower, by the side of the road, for a few soles and see three designs: The Tree, The Lizard and The Hands. That’s what we did on our way north.

The first is a resort village built in the middle of a sea of sand dunes around a small oasis. The water is said to have therapeutic qualities, and the dunes are a popular place to do sandboarding and take dune buggy rides. The second is surrounded by vineyards and agriculture (including cotton, olives, mango, asparagus and avocado) and is home to the famous Pisco brandy, as well as numerous winery and distillery tours.

Larry Leigh is an avid angler, hunter and all-round outdoors person who prefers to cook what he harvests himself. He is a past president of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and retired hunter-education coordinator for the Government of Yukon.

USE UP THAT BURGER! S

o you checked the freezer to get something for supper and were surprised to see how many moose- and/or bison-burger packages were still there—but just under what you needed for supper. And some or maybe all of it is from last year (but, wrapped properly, it will be fine for some time yet). Burgers are great, but if served too often, they lose their appeal. There are a number of meals using this meat, but the following two suggestions are really quite simple and can be frozen in meal-sized portions for future use.

#1: BURGER SOUP Simple, and ready to eat in less than 2 hours. Recipe is for 1 lb of meat, so multiply if using more.

Ingredients (for 1 lb meat) • 1 lb meat • 1 cup each of chopped carrots, onion and celery • 6 cubes beef bouillon • 5 cups water (or equivalent stock) • 1 can tomato sauce (8 oz) • 1 can diced tomatoes (16 oz) • 1 tsp each of salt and basil • 3 Tbsp ketchup • 1 10-oz pkg. frozen corn niblets Method • Brown the meat and frain off the fat if using beef or generously-fatted game meat.

• Add all of the above ingredients, bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for at least 1 1/2 hours.

Note: Remaining or leftover soup can be frozen in yogurt, margarine, sour cream, etc., containers. These seal up tight to prevent air leakage (drying out/freezer burn) and should be labelled (masking tape) to avoid freezer “mysteries” or surprises.

Serves 4.

#2: TASTY MEATLOAF

Very easy, and ready to eat in 1 1/2 hours. Recipe is for 1 1/2 lb meat, so multiply if using more.

Ingredients (for 1 ½ lb meat) • 1 1/2 lb meat • 1 egg • 1 onion, chopped • 1 cup each of milk and dried bread crumbs • Salt and pepper, to taste • 2 Tbsp brown sugar • 2 Tbsp prepared mustard • 1/3 to 1/2 cup of ketchup Method • Mix the meat thoroughly with first 4 ingredients and place in a lightly greased 5- x 9-inch loaf pan.

• Mix the brown sugar, mustard and ketchup together, then pour over the meat.

• Bake at 350 F (175 C) for 1 hour.

• You can add zucchini strips on top of 2/3 full pan, then cover with remaining meat.

Note: Leftovers can be frozen in sealed plastic containers or ZipLock bags. The Zip-Lock bags seal very well but are fragile when frozen, so careful handling is necessary to avoid freezer burn (drying due to moisture leakage). These bagged packages can also be placed in a large-enough protective container (lid not essential) to prevent them from being damaged by contact with other freezer contents.

SAUSAGES AND LENTILS

ealthy, fast and cheap.

Lentils and sausages are an easy-to-prepare meal that you can serve with a simple green salad and some crusty bread for a meal that feels far more decadent than its parts.

Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS: ❑ 4 Tbsp butter ❑ 4 sausages ❑ 1 red onion, finely chopped ❑ 4 garlic cloves, sliced ❑ 1 carrot, finely chopped ❑ 2 ribs of celery, finely chopped ❑ 1 cup green lentils ❑ 2-3 cups of stock ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste

METHOD:

Diced onion, garlic, carrot and celery

1. Melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

When melted, brown the sausages on all sides, then remove from the pan and reserve. Add onion, garlic, carrot and celery, then cook until vegetables begin to soften, about 5 minutes. Add lentils and stir until everything is evenly incorporated, then nestle sausages back in the pan with the lentils and vegetables. Pour 2 cups of stock over sausages and bring to a simmer.

2. Cover and turn heat to medium-low. Let the mixture cook for 20 minutes. If lentils are still tough, add remaining stock and continue to cook until lentils are tender.

3. When lentils are tender, one from heat and serve sausages topped with a heap of lentils and a big dollop of mustard. n

very fall, for the past several years, my sister has said to me, “Sister! Have you made a pumpkin pie from scratch with a sugar pumpkin?”

My sister is a Red Seal baker, an accreditation that means much more to me than it does to her … Whenever I remind her she got her Red Seal, she says, “Miche.

That was twenty-five years ago.”

Nonetheless, when she asks me a question like this, I feel a certain weight—Why have I not made a pumpkin pie from scratch with sugar pumpkin purée?

Also known as sweet pumpkin or pie pumpkin, the sugar pumpkin is the smaller, finer cousin of the gangly field pumpkin we carve faces into at Halloween.

The sugar pumpkin’s flesh is finegrained and dry, while the field pumpkin is blessed with watery, stringy flesh—those orange strings so hard to scrape from the interior of our Halloween pumpkins.

Last year, on the day I went to buy a field pumpkin, all the grocery stores were cleaned out. My neighbour was in the same boat.

She had just moved into the hood and wanted to show up for her first Halloween in the right spirit, and I did too, and so began a frantic search for a pumpkin— any pumpkin to carve and light up and put in our windows for the five or six trick-or-treaters we get in our neighbourhood.

At 3 p.m. on Halloween, my neighbour called. “I am holding the last two sugar pumpkins at Riverside, as far as I know the last two pumpkins in Whitehorse. Do you want one?”

“But they’re for baking—” “Do we have a choice?”

We did not. My neighbour delivered the cutest, roundest, softball-sized pumpkin to my door. It looked sweet enough to bite into.

I carved for it a tiny face and a tiny hat, placed an artificial candle inside and set it out on the top step.

“Awww, cute pumpkin,” said the parents of the trick-or-treaters.

“Yeah, it’s really cute,” chimed in their offspring.

Our house had three visits, my neighbour’s had two; nonetheless, we were proud: we

had shown up for Halloween.

Next day, I cleaned, skinned, baked and puréed my little pumpkin, put it in a container in the freezer for a future delicacy and forgot about it.

I found it the other day. I wasn’t in the mood for pie (we were still eating the pumpkin cheesecake from Thanksgiving, made with canned purée—delish).

Then sprang to mind a coconut pumpkin soup I used to cook at the Chocolate Claim. I never had a recipe but it was always a huge hit, and so I took the frozen purée and added some onion and ginger, some homegrown carrots and a sweet potato, and is it ever good.

Tonight I will phone my sister.

This is what I will say: “Sister!

Have you made pumpkin soup, from scratch, with a sugar pumpkin?” (I am the older sister, an accreditation that means far more to me than it does to her; nonetheless, I believe my question, too, will carry a certain weight.)

And I hereby promise, the next sugar pumpkin I find goes into pie.

Pumpkin and Coconut Soup Though fresh sugar pumpkin is lovely, canned purée works beautifully too. And you’ll have enough purée left to make muffins.

Ingredients • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (2 cups) • 1 medium carrot, chopped (1/2 cup) • 1 medium sweet potato, chopped (1 1/2 cups) • 2 Tbsp grapeseed or coconut oil • 1 1/2 inches of ginger, peeled and minced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp turmeric • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper • 2 cups pumpkin purée • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth • 1 can full-fat coconut milk • 1 tsp salt Instructions • Heat oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Once it is shimmering, add onions, carrot and sweet potato. Cook until the onion is translucent and the other vegetables begin to soften, 5 to 7 minutes.

• Stir in turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.

Add ginger and garlic and stir to combine.

• Stir pumpkin purée into the vegetable mixture until evenly combined. Pour in chicken or vegetable broth, cover, and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, until vegetables are thoroughly cooked.

• Purée soup, until smooth, with an immersion blender, in small batches in a blender or food processor, or by pressing through a sieve with a wooden spoon (the old-fashioned way still works!).

• Rinse and dry the saucepan and return the soup to the pot. Turn burner to medium-low, pour in coconut milk and heat until steaming. Add salt at the end, to taste. Serve at once, or cool to room temperature, store in the fridge, covered, and serve next day when it will taste even better.

Makes about 6 cups.

Bonus Recipe!

Pumpkin, Pecan and Cranberry Muffins Really good with pumpkin soup …

Ingredients • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup Hinterland Hard Red Spring Wheat Flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger • 1/2 tsp allspice • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1/2 cup melted butter • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed • 1 1/2 cups canned or homemade pumpkin purée • 2 large eggs • 1/4 cup milk • 1 cup chopped pecans • 1 cup low-bush cranberries, frozen or thawed Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 F and line 18 muffin cups with paper liners, or grease them thoroughly.

• Whisk dry ingredients together in a large bowl and set aside.

• In a smaller bowl, whisk granulated and brown sugar into the melted butter until thoroughly combined.

• Beat in eggs, pumpkin purée and milk, then whisk until mixture is a uniform colour.

• Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon, going right to the bottom of the bowl to be sure all of the flour is incorporated.

• Stir in pecans and cranberries.

• Spoon batter into muffin cups, filling right to the top. Bake at 350 F for about 30 minutes, until tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

• Cool in the pan for 5 to 10 minutes before sampling, with a dollop of butter or a slice of old cheddar cheese.

• Store in a tin in the cupboard for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. (These muffins freeze really well.)

GRIZZLY ENCOUNTER

When you stand in front of a bear (small or large), it makes you feel very inadequate indeed

T

he grizzly we harvested this fall relied on berries, roots, horsetail and moose. We encountered the big bear only 10 days before, on our trail to the river, and we were only 20 metres apart from each other. Luckily, he decided to turn around and walk away (you never hear a bear approach or leave!), but the chance was 50:50 of him deciding to come after us or turn around. One of our wildlife cameras captured him once more before we bagged him. We get many grizzly photos,

was not so. This year we’ve only seen a cow, with one calf from last year, wandering through. We figured the grizzly had learned to stalk the cows until they gave birth, then he killed the calf. It seemed, as well, that his territory had shrunk in size, as we saw new signs from him more often—even bark ripped off of trees, and hair rubbed on a tree right beside our cabin. Whenever we’d walk our one-hour round trip, there were new signs—diggings, droppings and tracks.

to rest or sleep not far from the kill site, where he can keep watch on it. If you should accidentally come upon such a place, alarm bells should start ringing loudly— because chances are that a bear is watching you!

We felt that the balance was off: our trapline is inhabited mostly by grizzlies (very few black bears, as grizzlies won’t tolerate black bears in their main territory) and lone wolves that team up to go after moose calves, as well. Now it feels like moose have a chance, once again, and we’re curious to see when a new grizzly will make his home in this place.

We are hoping a moose cow will live at the lake again, to rear her young there. Maybe we’ll see a black bear more often and not just once every few years in the middle of the summer.

Trappers play a role in keeping the balance: depending on where a trapline is. However, it isn’t just trappers that harvest a moose.

There may be others hunting only moose (alone in the wilderness while hearing wolves howling).

And when it comes to those same wolves, hunters may choose not to harvest any of them because they don’t know how to properly prepare a pelt.

Respect plays a role, as well: trappers should use everything they can from a harvested animal and prepare its meat or hide (or other parts, such as skulls) to their full satisfaction.

A very good book to check out is Commercial Standards for the Marketing of Wild Fur, by Antoine Martineau-Rousseau, Pierre-Yves Collin, Gaetan Fournier, Andre Blais, and Roch Lessard (Yukon Trappers Association might have it in stock).

THE KINGS ARE BACK IN TOWN

T

he Kings of the North are back In the Yukon.

The feature film Kings of the North is slated to run at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) on Nov. 10, 2023, and one of the film’s cocreators, Peter Zenkl, couldn’t be happier.

“It’s super exciting,” Zenkl said about having an opportunity to get the film shown again at the YAC. He added that when he, Peter Mather and Matthew Lien were making the film, the trio often didn’t see the film as a whole because they were so consumed with the day-to-day tasks of making it.

But now that it’s hitting screens on a regular basis, it puts a smile on his face. “It’s a big thrill to see it every time.”

What makes it even more special is the rising demand to see the film, by the people Zenkl encounters when he’s out and about.

He said he often receives comments from Yukoners who want to know when the film will be showing again in the territory. “There still seems to be a lot of interest in the show,” Zenkl said. The filmmakers had a small showing at Winterlong Brewing, in the early spring, and then had its premier at the YAC in April. Since then it’s been shown in Haines Junction,

Dawson City and Vancouver and will make an appearance at both the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival on Nov. 16 at the Rio Theatre on East Broadway and at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival slated for January 16–23, 2024, in Naples, Fla. The evening will consist of a photo showcase by Jesse Winter, also a Kwanlin Dün First Nation Elder (TBD) who will tell a story about salmon, and Peter Mather will hold a book-signing session.

The evening will conclude with the screening of Kings Of The North and a reception with a Q&A session, Zenkl said. Proceeds from the sale of beer from Winterlong Brewing will be donated to the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

Mather, videographer Zenkl, and Lien came together over the past two years to turn what began as a photography project for Mather into a major passion project for the trio. Having an opportunity to document these bears is something Mather has wanted to do since he was a youngster and an emerging photographer and was hearing stories about the famous ice bears.

He recalled one about an older bear, in the village of Klukshu, who was respectfully named

“The Mayor” by locals who said the older bear would often drive off younger bears from the site.

Mather said it made for a good relationship between the bear and the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) using the river, as it reduced the chances of human-bear contact.

Zenkl, who has been photographing and filming northern lifestyles in the Yukon for the last several years, for magazines and social media in Europe, said the opportunity to work with Mather was an amazing one. He said it was definitely hard work (he also became a new father during this time), and those two major changes in his life have helped define who he is, he said.

Zenkl said he is thrilled with the chance to showcase the film at the YAC, once more, and is grateful for the support he and his cocreators have experienced.

“It’s an amazing space at the Arts Centre,” he added. “We are really grateful for all the interest and support.”

In addition, he said he thinks there is still a lot the film can offer people.

“We think it has a very powerful message.”

She is a very smart dog, and really likes people as she has bonded with her foster a little too much. She loves to chase balls and is very fast, she learns quickly and is pretty quiet unless I’m leaving and then she gets anxious. She is crate trained and learned quickly where to go to the bathroom. She eats well. She’s not really leash-trained but her fosters are working on it.

a wolf (or any other mammal) for taxidermy purposes. Near the end of the Yukon Hunting Regulations booklet, there’s a page detailing the number of animals harvested the year before (which is broken down into Game Management Zones).

Yukon grizzlies (Ursus arctos) are undoubtedly the kings of the bush and are a symbol of the wilderness. The only competitor for a grizzly on a kill site is a wolverine.

These bears can easily weigh up to 275 kilograms!

The heaviest grizzly studied in the Yukon, as of the ’80s, tipped the scales at 430 kilograms. It is believed that he enjoyed prolonged meals of garbage. In the fall, grizzlies can put on one kilogram per day when enough berries are available (grizzlies can eat up to 200,000 berries in a single day).

near the treeline; that’s where we saw (three years ago) a fresh track veering off our snowmobile trail towards the mountains. At that point we were already up at the treeline and coming back from the North Cabin. It was the same bear that was ready to move a ton of earth out of the hillside to make himself a cozy den that would be one metre high and oneand-a-half metres in diametre.

A mattress of grasses, moss and branches would line the den. The bear’s heartbeat and breathing rate would be lower, but its body temperature would remain near normal, which means that it could wake up quickly.

hile the beginning of November signals the closure of the vast majority of big game hunting in the territory, another incredible opportunity is just getting underway.

Whether you’re still looking to fill your freezer with some highquality organic protein or just want a good excuse to get outside with your friends and family, then I have good news for you—bison hunting is now in full swing. And that means five more months to get out on the land and experience the Yukon winter in an exciting new way.

However, bison hunting season also coincides with the darkest, coldest months of the year.

It presents us with a unique set of challenges and variables to grapple with and overcome.

Fortunately, with some planning and preparation, this hunt isn’t as daunting as it sounds.

it’s essential to do a comprehensive assessment of your winter gear. Cleaning and treating waterproof and down equipment ensures that your clothing system will be up to whatever curveballs Mother Nature throws your way.

Dust off the old parka and ensure that moths haven’t chewed a big hole in your insulation. If you have holes or leaks in your outer layers, use some gear tape (or Tuck tape) to patch it up. If you’re considering retiring some old winter garments, now may be a good time to invest in some new pieces.

Reliable clothing is essential for bison hunting, and holiday deals are just around the corner.

I like to use Merino-wool base layers because they keep you warm, even when slightly wet from sweat, and also outperform synthetic fabrics during more static activities. While bison hunting, you’ll likely find yourself driving a

CHECK YOUR GEAR One of the most important things you can do to stay safe during winter outings is to check your gear and plan ahead. The old saying—“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”—is particularly true for those adventurous enough to explore the depths of the backcountry in search of North America’s largest (and possibly most iconic) terrestrial animal.

As you prepare for a bison hunt,

snowmachine across frozen lakes, or motionlessly glassing basins and mountainsides for hours on end. It gets cold. So, dressing accordingly is paramount.

Fur hats and mitts are a great investment. With some upkeep, fur will outlast almost any other material, and buying fur also supports hard-working local trappers.

Bring these “essential” items with you on every outing, regardless of the forecast. The temperature may be mild at the trailhead, but you’re likely to experience adver-

sarial conditions while you’re out there. And nasty winter storms can sneak up on even the most experienced hunters.

Footwear will also be critical to staying focussed on the task at hand. Check your old muck boots for cracks and leaks. Mukluks can be an excellent option for deep cold, but bison hunting will often take you into wetlands, lakes covered with overflow, or across open creeks. Having footwear that is both warm and waterproof is a must for me, which is why I opt to wear military “bunny boots.” You can usually find a lightly-used pair on military-surplus websites.

Easy-to-use firestarter headlamps, with extra batteries, a solid tarp or emergency bivy, a robust first-aid kit, a GPS and a functioning two-way satellite communication device are also critical items to include in your pack. Test your survival gear before you head out the door, and make sure you know how to use it under pressure. When things go sideways during the winter months, being able to access and use this gear readily can save your life.

Whether you like to hunt with or

without a machine, transportation will also significantly affect your ability to find and pursue these animals. The Aishihik Wood Bison population is notorious for venturing into the most rugged terrain their core range has to offer. So, whatever method you choose, take some time before heading out, to ensure everything is in orderly, functioning condition.

Wax your skis, treat your snowshoes, feed your dog team an extra meal, or check the components of your machine and skimmer.

However you choose to do it—just buckle down and make sure your vehicle is serviced and ready to go. Take a shorter day trip (or two) to get back in the groove and shake that lazy-summer rust off. These outings will also help you acclimate to the frigid temps.

Lastly, make sure you have the freezer space to house hundreds of pounds of meat for the next year. And if you don’t, maybe think twice about whether you really need to harvest a bison this season. They are incredibly large animals and produce a lot of meat. Hunt with friends and family and, if you get lucky,

be sure to share your harvest.

There will be plenty to go around.

SIGHT YOUR RIFLE Another crucial piece of the puzzle is choosing an appropriate firearm that meets all the legal requirements. Bigger calibres are usually better, but as long as it meets the minimum requirements, the most important thing is to be comfortable using your bison-hunting rifle.

Practice, practice, practice. Hit the range and sight-in your rifle, with your selected hunting ammunition, before you go out on the land. Use a lead-sled or a sandbag to “zero” your rifle from a bench.

Once you’re dialled in, do your best to practice shooting in a way that imitates a real-world hunting scenario. Shoot from multiple positions and in deeper snow.

Common situations will have you standing (using a shooting stick or tripod), laying down behind your pack or shooting from a natural piece of cover like a rock or a log.

Winter is Coming ... cont’d from page 25 tice this way, but it’s going to pay off when you get the opportunity to take a clean shot at one of these spectacular animals.

Carefully select a bullet that’s constructed to ethically take down large-bodied animals. For this reason, I reach for monolithic solidcopper rounds. Although, there are also some bonded bullets that work well for thick-skinned, big-boned animals like bison. Do some reading online, talk to your friends or visit our local hunting store if you have questions about sourcing appropriate ammunition.

It’s also a really good time to learn more about bison anatomy, because it differs significantly from other ungulates like moose, caribou and sheep. The vital zone on bison appears proportionately lower due to their massive thoracic vertebrae. To make an effective shot, you may be aiming lower than you’re comfortable with if you don’t understand where their heart and lungs are situated.

Wounding loss from bad hits on bison is likely higher than it is with other ungulates, partially because they are such resilient animals, and partially because they sometimes get hit in “the hump” far above the vital zone. It’s our responsibility as hunters to ensure a clean, ethical kill. So, let’s do our part in conserving these opportunities for future generations.

When you’re practicing, it’s also a good idea to take followup shots, because you may need to make a few shots in order to bring down a bison. You won’t

lose much meat in doing so, and it’s a good idea to “shoot until it’s down” with these animals.

Reacquiring your target can be tricky with higher-power rifles that recoil a substantial amount.

Having someone to spot your shot placements can be a fantastic help. Carrying a second magazine (or extra rounds) in your pocket is also wise. You never know when you’re going to need them.

Beyond that, wait for a good shot opportunity. Broadside is always best. Quartering towards and away angles can be tricky for many shooters, under the best circumstances, and can be entirely ineffective on animals this size.

Don’t take headshots. If you want to know why, just go into the Environment office and ask to see a cross-section of a bison skull.

Always approach a downed animal from the rear, on the spine side, and use caution. Look to see if the chest is rising and falling, or if steam is coming from its breath. If you need to dispatch an animal, do so from a safe but fairly close range and put a shot into the base of the skull where it meets the spine. When you walk up to the bison, poke it in the hind quarter with your rifle, and then remain on the spine side and poke the eye to see if there is a reflex.

MENTAL PREPARATION Like other winter pursuits, bison hunting can be mentally trying.

There’s a good chance you will

The key is not to be surprised when it does happen. Expect the unexpected and you’ll be safer for it.

Approaching every bison hunt— whether on a day trip, a weekend or a week-long mission—with a positive mental attitude makes a massive difference and often leads to a successful hunt. Be prepared to endure some hardships, but try to do it with a smile

and the confidence of knowing you’re ready to tackle it with all of the planning you’ve put in.

The most successful hunters I know all seem to imbibe the same attitude: patience, positivity, and perseverance. And remember, the greatest challenges often come with the greatest rewards.
