ARTISTS CREATING A ZINE

ukon Conversation Society (not to be confused with the Yukon Conservation Society) is a group of artists, a creative collective. Its Facebook site has 81 members. They are organizing open mics and meetings and are publishing a zine—a self-published magazine.

“Our publication is really just for the sake of bringing artistic minds together and helping people showcase their work. So, in 2021, we got together with a mind to bring back community and culture,” said Nolan Boehm, a collaborator of the team who is putting together the zine.

Zines got popular during the era of punk. Starting in the 1970s, DIY culture of punk created a thriving underground press. Usually the zines would be given to people at concerts. According to Wikipedia there has been a revival in the alternative publication culture, beginning in the 2010s, in tandem with the influx of zine libraries and as a result of the digital age,

which has sparked zine festivals across the globe. The San Francisco Zine Fest started in 2001 and features up to 200 zines. The Magazine Broken Pencil features reviews of hundreds of zines and

a platform that Yukon Conversation Society is using to showcase art: drawings, poems, stories and more.

more about the creation of the zine: “It all started with openmic events in different locations.

We planned and implemented an open mic for poets, storytellers and musicians, most of whom were amateurs. That is, most of the presenters were doing it for the first time that night, sharing with an audience something that they wrote. It was a beautiful, inspiring evening.”

There have been two more open mics of this sort, one online and another in person, this past summer. These evenings of sharing and creation led to the publication of a zine, compiling content from as wide a variety of people as they could reach. Boehm explained that it doesn’t matter if the texts are in French or even German, because there are French and Germans living in the Yukon. Boehm is also a contributor to the zine. The 33-year-old ESL Teacher writes poetry and short stories.

The upcoming zine will be the third. The theme of the first was simply “The Era of the Broken Windshield (Life in the Yukon).” The second publication, which they put together this past spring, was called “Stampeding Wildflowers” and was all about change and growth.

“Just recently, we decided on a theme and title for the upcoming publication: ‘Spicy Lattés: Laughing Through the Harvest while Preparing for Rebirth,’” Boehm said.

The deadline for the zine is November. Artists can send their work to yukonverse@gmail.com.

“We accept any medium that can be printed on paper, so long as it is in keeping with the theme, and we encourage people who have been practicing an art for a while, without sharing, to take this as an opportunity to try.”

THE YUKON REMEMBERS The annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Whitehorse will return to its full capacity and programming at the Canada Games Centre on November 11

T

he Remembrance Day ceremony at the Canada Games Centre (CGC) is something many community members have missed, over the past couple of years, when Covid protocols didn’t allow for large indoor gatherings. This year, however, the ceremony will look much like it did in pre-pandemic years. It’s been a lot of work to put together again, according to Whitehorse Legion President Joseph Mewett, but this year’s edition will once again be an event the whole community can take part in.

“We’re actually doing a fullblown ceremony,” said Mewett.

“The only difference is it’s going to be about a half-hour shorter than normal, and the only reason behind that is we’re not laying as many wreaths. A lot of wreaths will be pre-laid the night before.”

As Mewett explained, an hour and a half is a long time to ask so many people to stand, so only the key 20 wreaths will be laid as part of the ceremony, which include those of the Commissioner, the Legion and the RCMP. Community engagement is a key part of the Remembrance Day ceremony in Whitehorse, and Mewett is happy that the public will be able to participate this year.

“It’s nice to be back where we can involve the public more,” he said. “That was the biggest downfall, that we couldn’t get

the public engaged as much as we wanted to, and the public wanted to be engaged.”

Last year, the Legion was hoping to hold the ceremony at the CGC, as usual, but with a smaller capacity.

Unfortunately, that didn’t end up being possible and many members of the public chose to have their own outdoor gatherings to honour Remembrance Day. Mewett says it was nice to see people taking it into their own hands, but the coming together of the entire community was missed. The Legion, itself, hosted a small, 25-person event at its headquarters.

“It’s nice to know that people remember and want to do something,” said Mewett.

Mewett said that, over the last few years, he has heard more and more people say that we are losing our veterans—a notion he doesn’t completely agree with.

“Yes, our WWI veterans are gone, and we don’t have many of our WWII veterans left,” he said.

“But there are still lots of vets kicking around—we’ve got the Cold War vets, we’ve got the Afghan vets, we’ve got guys that were in UN missions around the world.

There’s still lots of us kicking around, but a lot of people don’t look at us as vets.”

To Mewett, Remembrance Day is about honouring all veterans.

Mewett, himself, first joined the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserves in 1981, before transferring, in 1983, to the Regular Force.

Over the years, he served various positions in the Canadian Armed Forces, including serving three tours of duty, both within Canada and overseas.

“In our eyes, a veteran is a veteran, is a veteran,” he said.

“You signed the line to put your life on the line; you’re a veteran.”

According to Mewett, there are actually a few-thousand veterans in the Yukon, including three living WWII veterans.

The poppy campaign has started up again in the Yukon, this year, which began with the first poppy presentation and the raising of the poppy flag at City Hall on October 28. Up until Remembrance Day, Scouts Canada, the Cadets and others will be set up in various stores and businesses, around town, handing out poppies.

“Contrary to popular belief, we don’t charge for them,” said Mewett. “We just ask for a donation, and all the donations we make here in the Yukon, stay here in the Yukon.”

The Legion holds all poppy donation money to support veterans in the Yukon, and their families, in times of need. In the past few years, they’ve helped veterans, who temporarily had no housing, to get back on their feet, as well as helping injured vets, who couldn’t work, with everyday expenses.

Additionally, the Legion has donated money to the hospital to better help vets with their injuries and has bought crutches and scooters for vets who needed them.

“The military does get a pension, but it’s not huge,” said Mewett. “The supports aren’t there for a lot of these guys. When they suffer from injuries from being overseas, whether they’re mental or physical, it’s hard. A lot of guys can’t hold down full-time jobs because of the injuries they received overseas, so that’s where all this money comes into play, to help them out.”

he Old Fire Hall, on Front Street, will be roaring on November 19, as The Open Pit Theatre launches its Silent Film Night fundraiser with an early twentieth-century theme.

The event will screen old silent films from the early 1900s, while being underscored in real time by local musicians Andrea McColeman, Lonnie Powell and Dave Haddock, said co-artistic director Geneviève Doyon.

The fundraiser, which is twofold, is for the Open Pit Theatre’s current production of a mask and puppetry show called Radio Silence, which was launched

this past spring and is now touring in Victoria, B.C. In addition, a brand-new piece called Look Up, designed for people with reduced mobility (those in continuing care homes, hospitals, etc.) is currently in the works.

“It’s a very different kind of show,” Doyon said. “It’s short performances that is designed for audience members to be lying on their backs.”

The idea will be to have an overhead projector that will project onto the ceiling and that combines live animation with the overhead projector, along with live storytelling and a live soundscape.

Doyon added there is still much outreach and research to do, as the production is developed, and that will be worked on over the winter.

As for the Silent Film Night evening, Doyon said the fundraiser is a dress-up event, with a photo booth and some special 1920s treats such as era-specific drinks.

Sorry kids, this one is for the adults.

“A joke we often say [about the event] is it’s not a silent film night, as there is live music and improv,” Doyon added with a laugh.

Attendees line up for the Make A Plane Game at a previous fundraiser The format will consist of showing three short films, and for one of them there will not only be the improvised music, but also improvised (voice) acting.

“There are going to be improv actors, improvising the voice-over to the film,” Doyon said.

She was quick to point out that the actors have a limited prescreening of the film so that their narrative doesn’t go completely

off track. The films of that era also have title cards cut in-between the moving images, so that will be a little bit of help to the actors but will allow them to still be creative with their delivery.

“It makes for a really funny [show],” said Doyon, adding, “I think it’s a really refreshing thing to witness, as a 2022 audience, because the acting in those films is really outrageous. It’s so big;

it’s so over the top.”

That combination of the audience’s enthusiasm, along with the actors having fun and getting into their roles, makes it fun on a huge scale, she said.

Another major highlight of the evening will be the Make A Plane Game, which is always a huge deal and a lot of fun, Doyon said. The game sees participants make a paper airplane, which is

then thrown in the direction of a volunteer holding a suitcase. A plane that lands in the target (or is closest to it) is declared the winner, with the lucky individual getting a free Air North round-trip flight to one of the destinations on the airline’s western routes.

“I’m really excited about this specific one, as we haven’t done one since 2019,” Doyon said, adding, “I have been out and

about a little bit, in the last few weeks, and there really is a sense that people are so happy to see each other and celebrate together, and it’s a very celebratory type of event. It has it all in the sense that there’s acting, films, live music, dress-up. It’s right downtown. It’s very festive and it’s very exciting.”

As for Doyon’s role with Open Pit Theatre, she says she has worn many hats with the company and that the concept of it all is very group-oriented, with people coming and going as needed, based on the particular production.

“I like to say I am a theatre creator. Sometimes I perform, sometimes I write. I have done some directing in the past.” Doyon also said that she (along with her fellow co-artistic director Jessica Hickman and the board of directors with Open Pit Theatre) doesn’t really adhere to the traditional hierarchy of theatre where the director is at the top. That includes not always conforming to pre-written scripts, but rather letting the inspiration come from improvised input and from ideas that can be extrapolated on.

“We are basically interested in non-traditional theatre and nontraditional ways of creating.

“We are very collaborative,” Doyon added. “Really, the idea is that each piece should have its own unique creative method to it.”

This year’s productions— Radio Silence and Look Up—will mark the 12th year of Open Pit Theatre’s performances.

NEVER SHOW UP AN ELDER T here’s only one way in the North to deal with an arrogant prick (Lord knows we’ve had our fair share) and that’s a damned-good practical joke. Some of the legendary ones include Old Joe Bourque convincing a smart-ass city kid he’d met in the bar to come over to his

hosts Louie Goose and Les Carpenter of Inuvik. They had a co-worker who wouldn’t shut up about how tough he was. They got him drunk and convinced him to fry up a slab of rancid muktuk in a redhot cast iron frying pan. The guy got thrown out of his apartment after the landlord had to evacuate

The kid picked his teeth and complimented Joe on the deliciousness of his cooking. But he threw up for three days after Joe told him what he actually ate was a raven.

I met Victor 30 years ago when he packed me out of the snake pit, thirty seconds after I told a bunch of hippies that they looked worse than us Indians. If you know Victor, not only is he a cultural icon; he’s also a pretty decent bullshitter, to boot.

We were sitting around the fire, trading licks, when I made the mistake of showing Victor up with one of my jokes that had everyone doubled over. One thing about elders … you don’t show them up. No matter how good you are. You’re simply the opening act, and they’re the main attraction. And anyone in showbiz will tell you, you don’t show up the main attraction.

Victor’s got pretty thick skin and he took it in stride. Just then, a raven flew over and Victor got dead serious. He told us to gather around cause he was gonna tell us a legend of the raven. “Especially you,” he warned me. He went on to tell us about how his culture holds the raven in highest regard. The raven is a good friend and needs to be treated with the greatest respect. Victor had us in the palm of his hand as he recounted the numerous times raven led him to fresh moose tracks, knowing that he would be rewarded with a fresh gut pile after the kill. He handed me a pair of fancy moose-skin gloves and told me he was going to show me how to do the “coveted raven dance.” He assured the crowd that this was a sacred dance and he only showed a lucky few how to perform this sacred dance. I puffed out my chest and felt like a big shot for this special attention.

There was a smattering of tourists, kids and elders. The tourists, hungry for culture, edged to their seats and gave us their full attention. The kids balanced open cans of pop as they jockeyed for a ringside seat. Unbeknownst to me, the elders jabbed one another in

“Follow me,” he instructed, as he crouched down, imitating a raven hopping across the grass and cawing like a raven. “If you do it right, elders are gonna throw money at you,” Victor assured me. Wanting to impress everyone, I followed Victor’s every move, cawing with all I had and holding out my hand and doing my best raven hop.

There was a group of old ladies listening to Kevin Barr on stage, and Victor pointed to them. “Go dance for them,” he told me, following behind and chanting in Han. I hopped up beside the unsuspecting elders, with my hands out, doing my best raven caw. I looked at Victor for assurance and he shooed me forward.

The elders looked at me, then at Victor, then back at me, then back at Victor. “Louder!” Victor demanded. My tonsils were flapping like a cartoon as I cawed like I was auditioning for a part in North of 60. My throat began to crack and my eyeballs watered as I tried my best to impress Vic-

tor. Kevin actually stopped singing to watch me. His crowd slowly cranked their heads around to see what Kevin was watching.

My suspicion began to grow, as a smirk slowly came across Victor’s face. “What you’re stopping for?”

He demanded. “Keep going.

Raven doesn’t stop for anything.”

My hopping and cawing slowed considerably as I saw a group of elders slapping their knees and pointing at me. By this time, Victor couldn’t hold it any longer and doubled over in laughter. He pointed at me and managed to say, “Look at him. Doing raven dance,” then he busted out into uncontrollable laughter.

When everyone finally settled down, Victor leaned into me and said, “Don’t ever show up Elder, cause they’ll get the last laugh on you.” Then he turned and looked toward the river. “Come on,” he said, “I’ll show you salmon dance.”

I looked him up and down and said, “No way, man. No flippin’ way.” n

C

horizo and chickpeas—simmered in a paprika, spiked, and olive-oil hearty sauce—makes for a fantastic dinner with just some crusty bread and a tart salad, but cooking toasted dry pasta to the sauce makes it into something really special. The preparation of this pasta is based on Spanish fideos, thin spaghetti-like noodles that are often toasted.

If you’ve never toasted dry pasta before, you’re in for a treat. The simple act of toasting pasta in some olive oil changes the flavour of the pasta, adding a funky, toasted texture to the whole dish. When cooking pasta in the sauce, keep an eye on it so that it doesn’t dry out.

Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS • 4 Tbsp olive oil, divided • 1 red onion, chopped • 4 garlic cloves, sliced • 2 tsp paprika • 5 chorizo sausages, casings removed • 1 - 798 ml can whole peeled tomatoes

1 Break the pasta into 2-inch pieces

Chorizo, Paprika and Chickpeas, with toasted whole-grain pasta

• 1 - 540 ml can chickpeas, drained • 180 g whole-grain spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces • Salt and pepper, to taste INSTRUCTIONS • Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and, when shimmering, add onions, garlic and paprika and cook until onions are soft and paprika smells toasted, about 6 minutes. Add chorizo and cook, using a spatula to mash and break up the sausage until the sausage is browned, about another 5 minutes. Then add tomatoes and drained chickpeas and bring to a simmer. Continue to simmer for 30 minutes, adding additional water when necessary.

• In a large skillet, over high heat, add the remaining oil and add the dry spaghetti. Toss the spaghetti in the hot oil until it begins to toast and brown, about 3 minutes.

When the pasta is toasted, add it to the sauce along with 1/2 cup water. Simmer, stirring often and adding additional water, as needed, until the pasta is cooked, about 8 minutes. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper, and serve. n

y old friend Julie called to me from the back of her car, where she’d just finished loading her groceries. I waited, one hand on my shopping cart, until she caught up to me.

“I’ve been giving my friends bags of the local barley,” she said excitedly. “But they keep asking me what to do with it. I wondered if you would consider sharing a recipe in one of your columns.”

“On it,” I said.

The local barley that Julie (and I) are so excited about is grown

by Hinterland Flour Mills, owned and operated by Trevor and Marie Amiot.

The Amiots harvest barley and hard red spring wheat on 400 acres, not far from Whitehorse, milling the grain themselves and selling an array of products, such as breakfast cereals and cookie, pancake and cake mixes, as well as flours and whole grains in Yukon grocery

making processing much easier. The Amiots are as excited as Julie and I are about the joys and benefits of eating this versatile, healthful grain and extolling its virtues on the company website. Recently, Trevor Amiot pointed me to an excellent online resource for barley recipes: gobarley.com. But he also gave me a simple tip: use barley instead of rice in any of your favourite rice recipes.

Rice pilaf is one of my favourite side dishes for wild meat; picking up on Amiot’s suggestion, I conjured up a combination of mushrooms, nuts and dried fruit that might complement the nutty PHOTOS: Michele Genest taste and chewy texture of barley and stand up Barley Pilaf to the strong flavours of moose, bison or caribou.

❑ 1 1/2 cups hulless barley, rinsed, soaked in water to cover overnight and drained*

• Combine soaked, drained barley, 4 cups water, and salt in a medium saucepan, covered. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce heat to medium low and simmer until soft but still chewy, about 40 minutes.

• While barley is cooking, toast hazelnuts in a dry frying pan, over medium heat, for 5 minutes, until just beginning to turn golden. Cool, rub in a tea towel to remove some of the skins, and coarsely chop. Reserve until later.

• Squeeze morel mushrooms to remove excess liquid, saving the liquid. Chop morels into chunks and reserve.

• In the same frying pan you used to toast the hazelnuts, melt butter and oil over medium heat. When it is shimmering, add onion and sauté, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in thyme, cinnamon and pepper.

• Add chopped morels to the pan and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes.

Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional 2 minutes.

• Pour in 1 cup of reserved morel soaking water and simmer until the liquid has almost entirely evaporated, about 5 minutes.

• Stir in hazelnuts and chopped apricots.

• Once barley is thoroughly cooked, drain and return to heat.

Stir in onion, morel, hazelnut and apricot mixture, until thoroughly combined.

• Just before transferring to a serving dish, stir in lemon juice and all but 1 tablespoon of the chopped parsley. Sprinkle remaining parsley over top, once pilaf is in a serving dish.

Makes about 6 cups, enough for 6 to 8 people. n

❑ 4 cups water ❑ 1/2 tsp Kosher salt ❑ 1 cup hazelnuts ❑ 1 Tbsp butter ❑ 1 Tbsp oil ❑ 1 cup finely chopped onion ❑ 2 tsp dried thyme ❑ 1 tsp cinnamon ❑ 1/2 tsp black pepper ❑ 1 cup dried morel mushrooms, soaked in hot water to cover for 30 minutes ❑ 2 cloves garlic, minced ❑ 1 cup morel soaking water ❑ 1/2 cup dried apricots, coarsely chopped ❑ 1 Tbsp lemon juice ❑ 1/2 cup chopped parsley *Soaking the barley for several hours or overnight means it will cook more quickly on the stove. Unsoaked barley can take over an hour to cook.

raft Fairs are a way for local vendors to sell items they have made, and with the Yukon’s dark, cold winters, it is the perfect way to spend a few hours exploring what is on offer.

The majority of these business owners are women, with a 30 per cent increase in women-owned businesses over the last decade.

My first craft fair as a seller …

It was a cold and dark Saturday morning as I prepared items for my first-ever craft fair at Jack Hulland Elementary School. As I set up my table at the Haunts & Holly Craft Fair, I noticed that everyone else had proper display cases and lighting. Meanwhile, my table cover was a fitted bed sheet!

I’m not normally a craft-fair seller, I’m usually an attendee spending all my money on all the things. But with my recent children’s book, I felt this was a great way to sell some books while getting to chat with people all day.

I was sitting next to “the bannock lady,” Grandma Treesaw, and she was selling before the fair had even officially opened. I thought to myself, What if I don’t sell anything!?

Then the first person showed up and wanted to buy my book.

She pulled out a fifty-dollar bill.

F*ck! I thought to myself. I hadn’t even thought about a cash float!

“I’m so sorry I don’t have any

change yet,” I admitted. “This is my first craft fair.” Instead, the lovely lady sent me an e-transfer.

Phew!

The day continued and the people were never-ending. It was bustling with people. It really reminded me that even though Whitehorse is small, there are still a lot of people I don’t know.

All of a sudden it hit 2 p.m. and there was a lull, with an hour left.

I suddenly felt ready to go home, but then a final burst of people came to buy more items.

Eventually it was closing time, so I packed up my table and went home. I walked to my bed, fully clothed, fell onto it and went to sleep.

Being on the other side of the craft fair gives me new respect for all of the incredible people that do this as a side hustle or a full-time business. All day, you are talking to people, selling and doing things. You may not sell anything; you may sell a lot. It’s unnerving!

your own business? Definitely gives me more time with my son and him being home with me.

First Craft Fair: In a tiny town in Alberta, in 2003 The Experience: I had quilted and sewn goods. I sold nothing and it was devastating! I had no

idea what I was doing.

Why do people love craft fairs? We have a long winter up here, and I think it creates artists and crafters. There are so many amazing and talented people in the Yukon, and also very supportive customers. You are more likely to find unique, special and oneof-a-kind items at a craft fair that you cannot find anywhere else.

We have a lot of environmentally conscious Yukoners who want to decrease their carbon footprint, as well as keep the money in local businesses versus giant corporations.

What makes you want to be your own boss? I run my handmade business to complement my full-time job, which is very policy based, rigid and cerebral.

My handmade business allows me to be creative in my thought process and to also work with my hands in many mediums. I love to do woodwork, to sew and to bake challenging items like French macarons. Most of all, I like creating colourful, beautiful products

that serve a purpose in one way or another.

Tips! Your display is very important. Items on a flat table aren’t very appealing, no matter how cool they are. You are selling your brand—your items as well as your personality and overall vibe.

Don’t hide behind your phone or a book: stand up, make eye contact and smile. If you are introverted, bring an extroverted friend.

Selling other people’s items is sometimes easier, as they are less emotionally invested. Price everything! Customers do not want to ask, in case it is out of their budget, and then it just gets awkward.

SOUTHWEST SASKATCHEWAN IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK A Yukoner’s bike-touring trip in the prairies

T

his summer, I went cycle touring for three weeks in southwest Saskatchewan.

I was lured by “Saskatchewan is flat.” Sure, it would be easy riding. It was also part of the plan to travel somewhere at the opposite end of the landscape spectrum I was used to in the Yukon. In the deserted southwest, cactuses and Pronghorn antelope are not mirages but are very much alive.

Boundless prairies and wheat fields are kings and queens. And it is flat, right?

After many months of careful planning, I hit the road on August 27 at the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan on the Trans-Canada Highway. The first major stop was Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park on Highway 21. I didn’t pay too much attention to the word hills, but I should have. Reaching

One notable exception was the infamous Big Muddy Badlands, between Big Beaver and Bengough, on Highway 34. There, the road took a deep, deep dive at the bottom of the Big Muddy plains, to emerge on the other side, but not before offering an expanded view of the surrounding badlands.

Every single kick of the pedal was worth it.

I made it into Regina, via Highway 6, on Saturday morning, September 17. This was not random timing. While studying the road map, I came to the brutal realization that in order to reach the big city, I needed to cross two highways: the Trans-Canada Highway and the Regina Bypass.

These are no small roads for cycle tourers to cross. Saturday morning would surely be quieter, making riding on the overpasses safer, I

Next was a long and bumpy stretch of road moving south of the Frenchman River Valley.

Robsart, once a thriving little town (now a ghost town), provided an overnight stop for what would have been an extra-long day into the next campground. Perfect! I thought. I will camp at the ghost town and maybe see a ghost or two. Once in Robsart, I learnt quickly, by the sound of roaring trucks, that flesh-and-bones humans are still calling this place home. Nonetheless, I picked an abandoned house at the outskirts of town and called the front deck my home for the night. Getting a mattress and sleeping bag on the wooden structure, a strong feeling of excitement filled my heart.

What a joy it was to sleep in the open air, falling asleep as shooting stars and satellites criss-crossed the night sky.

Under a punishing sun and a grasshopper invasion, I reached the town of Eastend the following day. The mighty insects were

in the hundreds, hitchhiking on the bike panniers or getting cozy in my sandals. They proved to be constant companions for the whole trip. I was back in the Frenchman River Valley, the river itself flowing through town.

I felt too incapacitated by the heat to make a trip to the T.rex Discovery Centre, built to house bone remains of one of the most complete T.rex skeleton ever discovered. In 1991, Scotty the T.rex was found in a nearby hill, by a local high-school teacher who had joined paleontologists on a field trip.

For the next two weeks, the gruelling heat didn’t leave. Low to mid 30s was the new normal. A change of plan was needed to bike, every day, without suffering from heatstroke. The new strategy: morning riding, when the heat was not strong enough yet to melt all of your chocolate bars.

From now on I carefully watched the weather forecast, and each morning I planned departure time accordingly. Quite a feat for a morning slacker like me.

And it worked. Until a high of 37℃ appeared on the forecast in Val Marie. I could not believe it; we were in September, after all. By now we could get snow back home

seen anytime.

No wonder the Canadian government established Grasslands National Park to preserve this one-of-a-kind habitat.

The park is home to many rare and endangered prairie species, both flora and fauna, that can only be seen in this part of the country.

S u n d a y, September 4, 2022 After an especially long and hilly day on the road, and only after reaching the campground in the Village of Mankota, did I open my smartphone to check the weather forecast. Great! Now was the time to wash my dirty shorts and socks, after days of relentless sweating. Still short of seeing flat prairie land, I took a day off in Rockglen to hike around the surrounding hills.

Now, cycling northward, en route to Regina, the roads were becoming flatter, sort of.

thought. Terrified but determined, I made it over the overpasses, waiting for a break in the traffic so I could cross exits and entries.

With great relief and a modicum of pride, I finished my Saskatchewan bike tour in Regina—a grasshopper or two by my side. n

COMMUNITY Victoria Gold’s Commitment to Yukoners Victoria Gold is pleased to support teams from across the territory undertaking different pursuits including Village of Mayo resident Cheryl Klippert and her ‘Victoria Gold Corp’ 2022 Klondike Road Relay team in early September.

“We were happy to sponsor Cheryl and her team of runners in the 2022 Klondike Road Relay,” says Victoria Gold President and CEO John McConnell. “We have supported her team in this event every year the race has been held since 2017 and from our Victoria team to her race team, we extend our sincere congratulations.”

The 175-kilometre relay begins in Skagway, Alaska and is broken into 10 legs, varying in distance from nine to 25.6 kilometres. It begins at sea level, ascends to an elevation of 1,004 metres in the first two legs, and descends to 610 metres toward the finish line at Rotary Peace Park in Whitehorse. The race was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic and/or resulting cross-border logistics challenges.

“Our 2022 team, which we called ‘Victoria Gold Corp’ to acknowledge the company’s support, was compiled of energetic and committed runners from Mayo, Dawson City, Whitehorse, and Manitoba,” says Cheryl. “Our Leg 1 runner started running at 8:45 p.m. on Friday evening in Skagway, the rest of us ran through the night and our final runner crossed the finish line at 5 p.m. on Saturday.”

The relay was conceptualized in 1982 by the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon as a means of attracting visitors to the territory in the Fall. In 1983, the first race took place with 25 teams. The 2022 relay boasted 158 teams from across Canada and the U.S. “The weather was on our side and the full moon was a bonus,” continues Cheryl. “Thank you to Victoria Gold for supporting us. At the end of the day, we were all wearing smiles.”
