emember when, back in ancient-Egypt civilizations, hieroglyphics were used as a written form of communication?

Today, you could easily say that emojis are the modern-day hieroglyphics. If I used between four to six emojis, instead of words, the receiver would have a very good idea of what I am trying to say.

For example, (I would like a bottle of wine, please).

Or, (I don’t feel well and may have the runs).

While most emojis are relatively straightforward, as to what they are and mean, there seems to be a lot of speculation surrounding the poop emoji. Is it actually poop?

Or is it a chocolate soft-serve icecream swirl? Based on my research, it would seem that the poop emoji is, in fact, poop.

Emoji use was first implemented in 1997, on Japanese cellphones. It was not until 2010 that emoji use began to pick up some traction, as many different operating systems started to have them available to users. It was also the first time a emoji, as we know it, was seen.

Prior to 2010, it looked like a brown pile of mush, with flies buzzing around it. Definitely reminiscent of what you would see on a farm, with flies buzzing around .

The fly-buzzing version (on the emoji) had some mixed reviews.

In Japan, it was popular, but apparently, at Google, some thought it to look offensive (if used in an email). So, in 2010, when Unicode

The infamous Pile of Poop (“poo”) emoji was introduced—an updated version of emojis—the poop emoji was redesigned to look more “friendly.”

The flies were removed, the brown pile changed to more of a less-obvious swirl, and a smiley face was added. Some will say that this improved version of the emoji bears a resemblance to a Japanese cartoon character called Dr. Slump. I suppose it is possible that the designers of the new emoji sought some inspection from this funky retro cartoon, as Dr. Slump looks like a pink-poo swirl, with a smiley face.

Aside from the design, it also seems that the Emoji Dictionary registers the poop emoji as poop.

When you start to type words in a text message, emojis will pop that relate to the words you are . When you enter the word poo, comes up as the related

emoji. When you type ice cream, two emojis show , or . You can tell from the construction of the swirl on the cone, that it is a different swirl than that which is the emoji.

So, based on this writer’s findings, there is evidence to support the fact that the emoji is .

But, the great thing about emojis is that they can be used in any context and have multiple meanings.

So by all means, use as chocolate ice cream ... or a happy face … or anything else you find that comes to mind. Not even the ancient Egyptians had hieroglyphics down to a perfect (science). See ... to some, those emojis would represent science; to others, they would be colourful “randomness.”

The emoji language is whatever you want it to be.

The highway toilets along the Alaska Highway

The outhouses along the Yukon’s highways are truly unsung heroes. Here’s what you should know, to better appreciate them

M

aybe you picked up a morning coffee to get you through that long, early

drive. Maybe you were rushing out of the house to get your hours behind the wheel over with as soon as

possible. Or maybe you woke up with an upset stomach and decided to still make the 45-minute trip into town, to go to work, against your better judgment. Whatever it is that happened to you, there’s a good chance it resulted in you meeting with one of the Yukon’s most-overlooked unsung heroes— the highway toilets.

We’ve all used them in a moment of need; they’ve truly saved us all in a real pinch. They’ve always been there for us, saving us from having to do our business in the woods and miserably attempting to clean up afterwards with a leaf, yet they never get the appreciation they deserve.

Who sings the praises of the highway outhouses? Who even talks about them? We reached out to the Yukon’s Department of Highways and Public Works, to find out what we could regarding the cost, maintenance and more of these road-trip pit stops, and were given quite a massive load of information.

“There are a number of reststop pullouts, along Yukon highways, that provide travelers with bathrooms, garbage disposal and interpretive messaging on Yukon history and environment,” Krysten Johnson, MPR (a communications and public relations analyst for Highways and Public Works) told What’s Up Yukon. “There are 58 concrete outhouses installed at these rest stops.”

Johnson went on to say that the Government of Yukon regularly makes necessary repairs, to ensure that highway rest stops can remain open, safe and sanitary for the traveling public.

The rest stops, within the highway corridor, are maintained and inspected, often, to ensure they are clean and well-stocked with necessary supplies, according to Johnson.

“We also maintain a rest-stop schedule, to ensure the travelers’ needs are being met throughout winter,” she said.

On average, the Government of Yukon spends approximately $900k, each year, on the maintenance of these rest stops. The wooden toilet facilities typically have lifespans of around 15 years, while the concrete ones can last twice as long, for a 30-year lifespan, on average.

“One issue we have been seeing at our rest stops is the overuse of our garbage cans, which has been attracting bears,” Johnson said.

“Sometimes people even dump their garbage in the outhouses themselves! It’s important that all Yukoners remember to be WildWise and do their part to keep our rest stops clean.”

A fun fact, Johnson said, that people might not know (about the highway toilet-facility rest stops) is that they are a favourite food of porcupines.

“These prickly critters like to peel and eat the plywood that makes up the outer shell of our wooden outhouses,” said Johnson.

“We’ve had to reinforce the bottom few feet with sheet metal, to help prevent this from happening.

Otherwise, the outhouses become a bit too breezy for some!” ■

here does our poop go after we flush? Most of us don’t give it a second thought. It magically disappears, never to be seen again.

I contacted Karen Furlong, manager of Water and Waste Services for the City of Whitehorse, to get the “poop” on our sewage system. Turns out our liquid waste undergoes quite a journey after we flush, and we can help ensure that the system runs smoothly.

The sewage system has been around for many decades, although it has, of course, required expansion and maintenance over the years.

“The system has grown in stages, as population and subdivisions have been developed,” Furlong explained. “The oldest

sections may be from the 1950s; however, different portions of the system—for example, downtown— have been through subsequent iterations of retrofitting.”

According to the City’s website, the sewage system consists of: • One main lagoon system that serves Porter Creek, Hillcrest, Takhini, Downtown, Riverdale and, more recently, Whistlebend • One minor lagoon system that serves Crestview • Four major lift stations and a flush tank • Five minor lift stations The main Livingstone Lagoon is on the east side of the Yukon River.

You may have seen it from the air as your plane circled the city and prepared to land. I asked Furlong if there was any concern that the

rapidly expanding subdivision’s poop generation would overwhelm the system.

“The design capacity considers future population growth; so, no, the increased population does not currently put a strain on the system,” Furlong said. She added that in 2021, the system dealt with 4,418,825 cubic metres of sewage.

When you think of it, the wastewater generated by Whitehorsians has quite a distance to travel, and you’d wonder how it makes it across the river. Furlong explained how it travels through the sewage system before reaching its final destiny in the lagoons.

tional and industrial users—and travels, by gravity, through the underground wastewater collection pipes, to low points, where lift stations pump the wastewater into intermediate stations or all the way to the Livingstone Lagoon, which is the city’s main wastewater treatment plant.”

And how does the sewage get from one side of the river to the other?

“It’s generally gravity fed to a pump station in Marwell, where it’s then pumped in a pipe, under the river, to the lagoon,” Furlong

explained. “The only exception would be parts of Porter Creek that are 100 per cent gravity fed to the lagoon, but part way there it goes into a holding tank, then again is gravity fed to Marwell and through pipes to the lagoon.”

Furlong says that about 25 people, on and off, are responsible for sewage operations in the city.

Unfortunately, there are times when their work involves unclogging inappropriate materials and items that folks flush down toilets.

This is where the “three Ps” come in.

“Only the three P’s should go into the toilets: pee, poo and (toilet) paper,” Furlong said. “The City spends time and effort unclogging wastewater screens and pump impellers, which become tangled with cloth, trash and ‘flushable’ wipes—[which are] not flushable—and shouldn’t be disposed of through the toilets.”

Some of the common culprits that folks flush include dental floss, tampon applicators, diapers, underwear and condoms. As well, said Furlong, “Fats, oils and greases should not be flushed or

put down the drain, either, because they group together to make a large mat that looks like a glacier or lily pad, or stick to the sides of the walls of the stations, reducing their capacity and increasing odour issues.”

No flushing cat poop, either, unless you’ve trained your kitty to do their business directly into the toilet.

“Cat poop is usually collected through litter boxes, and if the poop from the litter boxes is disposed into the toilets, it would transfer a certain amount of litter material into the wastewater, and the litter

could accumulate at the bottom of the sewer lines, diminishing its efficiency to wastewater flow,” Furlong explained.

The Business of Portable Toilets

P

orta Potty, outhouse, Johnnyon-the-Spot, and honey bucket are but some of the words people use for those plastic, square portable toilets. I chatted with Robin Fairclough over at Northwest Vacuum Services in Whitehorse about portable toilets, and got to ask every question you never thought to ask about those plastic booths.

“Be careful of who you’re marrying,” Robin said to me with a laugh when I asked her how she got into the portable-toilet, septic and vacuum-truck business. “You never know what you might end up doing.”

Robin and her husband, Robert, are partners in Northwest Vaccuum Services. Together with five employees, they operate three vacuum trucks and 150 portable toilets, the majority of which are distributed around the Yukon right now.

Summer is the season for portable toilets, though they always have a few out year-round. The demand is driven by the construction industry and all kinds of events ranging from music festivals, to dog shows, weddings and graduation parties.

The events requiring the most portable toilets, at any one time, are usually the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay, the Klondike Road Relay, and the Atlin Arts and Music Festival.

Robin always asks a lot of questions when people call to request toilets. “I’m not being snoopy,” Robin said. “There’s a lot of planning.”

There’s a bit of math involved

in knowing how many portable toilets are needed at any given event.

She said as long as no alcohol is involved, the average person uses the washroom five to eight times per day. They have a small box outhouse that has a 30-gallon capacity and is good for 200 uses. Their larger 50-gallon outhouse can handle about 400 uses.

“And what if alcohol is involved?” I asked.

Robin laughed a little, and said if you drink, then you know. It turns out that events where alcohol is consumed use double the outhouse capacity because people who are drinking use the facilities twice as often.

She also noted that those of us who urinate standing up typically fill the portable toilet a bit more slowly, as a nearby tree poses an easy alternative.

The portable toilets get shipped out with two rolls of toilet paper, and many of them come with hand sanitizer. Robin said she likes to keep the newest portable toilets for weddings.

In the summertime, as demand goes up, Northwest Vaccuum Services hires a full-time employee just to handle the portable toilet program. The larger 50-gallon portable toilet is cleaned out with a vacuum truck, but the smaller 30-gallon one has a removable box for the waste, so you can actually remove the waste box and trade it in for a clean one, all while keeping the toilet in place.

I asked if they’ve ever found anything of value while cleaning the portable toilets. They often find garbage (please don’t put your garbage in the hole!), but also the occasional cellphone and articles of

clothing.

I confided in Robin that one of my fears is someone tipping over a portable toilet while I’m inside. I asked if my fear is a reasonable one. “I’ve never had anybody say they’ve been tipped over while they’ve been inside,” Robin said. While they can be tipped over, she said it wouldn’t be easy. The portable toilets have a wide base (four feet by four feet) and are eight-feet tall. Empty, they weigh 120 pounds, but the waste can add up to 300 pounds. “They would really have to work at it,” she said reassuringly.

Really big windstorms have been known to tip portable toilets over.

Robin did suggest that portable toilets be placed up against something solid, when possible.

Portable toilets last a long time: They’ve only lost a couple over the years. Robin said that sometimes people try to light them on fire. She said Yukoners are generally pretty good to the portable toilets.

When she said that to me, I wondered if that’s because Yukoners seem to be more welcoming to the idea of outhouses than people are in other places I’ve lived. A lot of Yukoners use outhouses as their main commode, after all.

I asked Robin if there’s a preferred term for Porta Potty in the industry. She told me folks are welcome to use “whatever name gets the job done,” but did note the construction industry tends to refer to them as portable toilets.

So, whether you call them a sh*thouse, a portalet, a Jon or a port-a-loo — don’t put trash in them, don’t set them on fire, and rest easy knowing they’re pretty hard to tip over. ■

Frequency of bowel movements is another good indicator of intestinal health. Have you ever noticed the same person missing, after dinner, at the same time every night, just when it is time to do the dishes? If they are truly pooping (and not just trying to avoid cleaning up the kitchen), they are exhibiting a regular pooping pattern … a good indication that everything is ticking along just fine. It is considered healthy and regular to poop one or two type 4 poops a day. A slight deviation from your regular bowel movements is nothing to worry about. If, however, you are no longer able to poop at all, or you spend the entire day on the toilet, it’s time to talk to a healthcare professional.

Taking the time to check out your poops, whenever you “drop them off,” is time well spent during your bathroom break. Knowing your poop is one step closer to understanding and maintaining overall health and wellness.

Seven simple steps to help the production of regular, chocolatebrown, #4 poops …

1. Lower your stress levels.

This shy but very sweet girl arrived with her mama, Bunny. She is quite shy and submissive when meeting new people, treats help to warm her up!

She will be large, and will need regular daily exercise. She will need a family willing to work on training and socializing.

She would do well in a home with older children, and with proper introductions, another dog. We do not know how she is with cats.

‘SIT’ HAPPENS

M

ost of the time I think I am doing a good job as a parent.

Sure, there are days where I want to scream into a pillow or cry into a bowl of ice cream while binge watching serial-killer documentaries. And sure, I will openly admit that I make mistakes in my parenting decisions. Heck, I make them daily. However, in-between mouthfuls of chocolate-chip cookie dough, I assure myself that my kid is happy, healthy and living with more confidence than my husband and I combined. For that to be the case, I tell myself that I must be doing something right.

My son, who turns two this summer, is a total whirlwind of chaos.

My love for him, I am certain of— it’s everything else that has me utterly confused, at times. As most parents will attest to, what is true one day for their children does not mean it’s true for the next. The blueberry sausage that my son absolutely loved to eat, last week, I was hit in the face with, this week, as he whipped it across the room last night in utter repulsion. The act of brushing his teeth can morph from mind-bursting fun into an act of torture, within seconds. It truly feels like living with that Batman villain who bases his every decision on the flip of a coin. The results will either bloat my ego or send me down a rabbit hole of self doubt. It’s truly amazing how much power this child has over my self-esteem.

These days, my little guy is becoming quite the joker (another Batman villain … Oh dear!). He has always loved attention and typically wears a big smile, most of the time.

However, as he’s getting older, he is much more concerned with doing things to make others laugh. He wants to be the star, and he’s building a catalogue of material to entertain his audience. Unfortunately for me, his most-recent bit of material gives indication that I have not been on my A game when, I assure you, in this case, I have been.

The other night, at dinner, my husband and I were pleasantly surprised that the coin toss had gone in our favour and the meal had gone incredibly well. Our kiddo had even eaten his broccoli, without complaint, despite his months-long aversion to any type of green food.

He had happily babbled on with us, as we all ate in familial bliss, and I was relishing in the feeling of what

great parents we were when, all of a sudden, he decided it was time to share a carrot with his teddy bears.

This wasn’t unusual, and I was at least satisfied with the fact that feeding his stuffed animals a carrot would not result in a big mess to clean up. Not like spaghetti has done, in the past (but that is another story altogether).

After being content that each one of his bears were well fed, my husband informed him that it was time to rejoin us at the table and finish his meal. “Come eat your dinner,” I insisted, as my husband added a “Come, sit.”

The coin toss continued to go in our favour, and our little clown came running back to the table and proceeded to climb up onto his chair to resume his meal. Only, he did so while repeating what he had been asked to do, and confidently blurted out the word, “Sit.” Now you should know that our son has been expanding his vocabulary exponentially these last few weeks.

Everyday we are ecstatic to hear the newest groups of words that he is saying. He gets such a proud look on his face when he says something new, and often looks to see how we react. It is also important to note that my husband and I have made a very conscious effort to watch what we say around the little guy, now, as he has been repeating almost everything … or at least trying to. The last thing either of us want is to be the one responsible for him saying his first cuss word. Sure, it’s funny when other people’s kids do it, but I don’t want to be the mom on the other end of that judgemental look (you know how those parents get in those scenarios). I can honestly say that we have been doing a good job of keeping our child “cuss-free.”

Except … the moment we heard him utter the word sit, we knew that no one was going to believe us anymore.

He said, “Sit.” He did. Really.

That’s not what it sounded like, though. You, reader, know exactly what it sounded like. You can picture hearing it in your mind. You can see it, can’t you? … this innocent cherub, sitting at the dining-room table, with his teddy bear in one arm and a smile on his face, uttering what sounds exactly like the word sh*t.

Of course, we made the rookie mistake of laughing. It was just so unexpected; how could we not? And, of course, as a result of our laughter, he got the reaction he loves most.

He knew immediately that he had done something entertaining, and that meant only one thing in his toddler mind. Do it again. Do it nonstop.

“Sit. Sit. Sit.” The whole drive to daycare the next morning was cringeworthy, as I dreaded the possible reactions from other parents.

“Sit. Sit.” And because this little funny man insists on bringing his teddy bear with him in the car for drives, these days … “Bear. Sit.” I made the pre-emptive decision to notify the daycare, the night before, that he had just learned a new word. And so far we haven’t had any comments about it. Inwardly, I hope that it has just become something that he entertains his mom and dad with. After all, I can’t exactly tell him not to say the word. As horrible as it is, coming out, he is just

repeating a direction he was given.

And he does know what it means. I know this because, as I watched my pride and joy make his way down a set of stairs, in a seated position, he repeated the word each and every time his little bottom touched the steps …

“Sit. Sit. Sit.” I know this will pass. In the meantime, I am doing everything in my power to get him fixated on another, more-desirable-sounding word. I also know that while I may die inside a little bit if, and when, he decides to blurt this out in public, in the near future, that most parents will sympathize rather than judge. And at least it’ll give people a laugh—if only because it’s not happening to them. ■

Allan Benjamin is a poet, a cartoonist, a fiddle player and a snowshoe racer from Old Crow, Yukon. Allan is a Vuntut Gwich’in artist who provides cartoons and poems to What’s Up Yukon. He introduces us to two sets of characters who represent Allan’s family and traditional Gwich’in life growing up in Old Crow.

It is a small, rustic camp located on Braeburn Lake (about an hour and a half north of Whitehorse).

Director and Assistant Director work hand-in-hand to build the camp from the ground up. They hire and train the counsellors, organize camp activities, and handle any problems that may arise. Friendly, encouraging leaders, the directors of Braeburn Camp are passionate about nature and working with children. Campers are supervised 24-hours a day by our qualified and well-trained counsellors.

We employ four counsellors (2 male and 2 female) who are trained with basic First Aid, water safety, and who have practiced camp emergency procedures. They sleep in cabins with the campers and guide them through their daily schedule.

If you love working with kids, are passionate about the Yukon outdoors, and are interested in working in a compassionate Christian environment, consider joining our team!

Besides our paid positions, we also welcome volunteers to help out with kitchen, waterfront, crafts, or camp maintenance. 14 and 15-year olds can volunteer as counsellors-in-training (CITs).

Victoria Gold Spring Break Colouring Contest for J.V. Clark School Throughout February, Victoria Gold’s Community Liaison worked with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun and Mayo’s J.V. Clark School to create a colouring contest to help engage the school’s students and their families over the school Spring Break.

The contest was open to all school students up to Grade 7 and 18 imaginative, colourful entries were received once school re-commenced after the break.
