She credits her grandparents with her success and dedicated the award to them for gifting their knowledge to her

atricia (Pat) Joe is a KDFN citizen from the Tagish Nation and the Dak’laweide Clan (Killer Whale and Wolf Crest).

This summer, she won a Canadian Teachers’ Federation award for leadership in Indigenous education and excellence in teaching that reflects Indigenous culture.

The award was presented on July 15, 2021.

“I owe this honour to my grandparents, Julia and Johnnie Joe,” she said. “I was born on the trapline and raised by my grandparents. During long winter evenings at the family homestead, grandmother would pull out the Na-

Pat is a teacher, mother, grandmother and knowledge keeper. She specializes in oral stories and oral histories. As a former Deputy Chief and Chief Land Claims and Self-Government negotiator, she also has many years of experience in politics and business.

Pat is a third-generation survivor of residential school and she diligently teaches about the legacy of residential schools and the impacts on First Nations. Throughout her career, she has been an outspoken advocate for her culture, history, beliefs and values.

“I accept this award, acknowledging that many Yukon First Nation Elders, past and present; colleagues, friends and family have supported me on my path and in my work. Because of the knowledge gifted to me by the ancestors, it is my duty to give back by supporting teachers and working with students, from K–12, in delivering the Yukon First Nation curriculum.” n

TELLING THE YUKON’S UNTOLD STORIES

W

hen Paul Gowdie first learned about the hundreds of Black soldiers who worked on constructing the Alaska Highway in the 1940s, he was surprised.

“I’m in a mostly white town, in a mostly white territory, and I attend this presentation and find out that 30 percent of the soldiers who built the highway were Black,” he said. “I thought, OK, I am not the first … there were others before me, and that was encouraging.”

He felt connected to the place he chose to call home, and that felt good. But it also made him wonder why he hadn’t heard about that part of the Yukon’s history before.

Gowdie wanted to find out more and that brought him to the Hidden Histories Society Yukon group in 2009.

Hidden Histories had formed almost a decade earlier, in 2000, to fill a gap to find and share the untold stories of Black history in the Yukon.

Charlotte Hrenchuk is one of the group’s founding members.

She has three adopted children from Sierra Leone and she started Hidden Histories when she saw what they were learning in school and knew they didn’t see themselves reflected in the history being taught at the time.

“I wanted them to be proud, and I wanted them to have figures they could look up to,” she said.

“We hear the horrible stories about slavery, but we don’t hear enough about all the amazing contributions that Black people have made to society.

“Those positive stories need to be woven into the historical tapestry as well.”

So, Hrenchuk and the group set out to help create that tapestry themselves, each story a thread.

And once they started following those threads, they became wrapped up in the work.

“The more we did, the more we wanted to do.”

With new members joining, the group broadened its focus to include the untold stories of Asian people in the Yukon. They brought attention to stories that colonial accounts of history tend to skip over—people doing everyday things, living good lives and enduring.

“When you say the word history, people kind of glaze over, but the personal stories touch peoples’ hearts,” said Hrenchuk. “These stories are part of the mainstream history; they’ve just been

PHOTO: : submitted overlooked, but they should be integrated and available.”

To bring those stories forward, the group used the resources they had available and sometimes simple grassroots tactics.

“At the beginning, we would go into the library and pull books off of the shelves and ask the librarians to display them for Black and Asian history months,” said Hrenchuk.

“After a while, the librarians started doing it themselves, and that’s when we feel like our work is bearing fruit … when someone else picks up the story and starts telling it.”

Since they began this work, the volunteer group has been supported by a secret weapon: archival researcher Peggy D’Orsay.

“She has the most brilliant ideas and she’s on all the time— always sending us the most obscure and interesting things,” said Hrenchuk.

Often, the hunt for those lost stories begins with a single photograph. Then the group

works together to dig deeper and find more connections through documents such as birth records and newspaper articles. They bring these pieces together to form a picture of the person’s life.

Over the years, the group has become a repository for those overlooked stories.

“There were many marginalized ethno-cultural individuals who tried to make a go of it, as well, that you just don’t hear about because they don’t fit the key points in the historical narrative,” said Gowdie. “They didn’t strike it rich or they weren’t outrageous enough.”

Lucille Hunter is a prime example. Pregnant at just 19 years old, Hunter travelled the Stikine Route to the Klondike in 1897.

Over her long life in the Yukon, she owned gold and silver claims in Dawson and Mayo, and she ran her own laundry business in Whitehorse.

The Hunter family’s story, and many other stories like it, had been stored in the archives until it was uncovered by the Hidden Histories Society. Ensuring stories like that are remembered is important to Hrenchuk and Gowdie. It’s what makes them continue their volunteer work.

“As I get older, I am more curious about my cultural and racial identity,” said Gowdie. “I am fully into it now that I have a daughter. I want her to have better experiences than I did.”

Since the early Gold Rush days, hunting and fishing pursuits have played a major role in tourism in the Yukon

I

n 1941, the new Alaska Highway rolled in across the Yukon, and hunters, fishermen and campers followed.

During the war years, wildlife received a serious crush in the harvesting of game animals. It was not until 1945, when the Yukon Fish and Game Association, with its 207 members, started to put pressure on the territorial and federal governments to institute strong hunting and fishing regulations.

Since the early days following the

Second World War, the Yukon Fish and Game Association and the Yukon Outfitters Association have played a major role in developing game laws, not only for fishing and hunting regulations but also for the future protection of wildlife habitats.

The word outfitter (prior to 1947) meant little more than the store or company that supplied hunting and fishing material. In 1947, the government of that day passed a game ordinance that labelled an outfitter as a person who engaged in the actual guided hunting of game animals or birds in the Yukon.

The outfitters’ business became big business for some.

In 1956, outfitters would guide about 70 hunters a year. By 1976, those numbers climbed to over 400, of which 10 percent were from European countries. Prior to COVID-19 settling into the Yukon,

5,219 hunting licenses were sold, of which close to 300 were nonresident licenses.

Fishing licenses were by no means a minor revenue for the Yukon government. From 2018– 2019, these sales brought in 19,446 dollars, alone, for paper licenses. Camping license fees brought in an additional $3,227, which actually climbed to $4,515 in 2021.

In the NWT, an outfitter’s business brings in close to 30-million dollars a year for a guiding business. In the Yukon, a single bear hunt with a professional outfitter would cost a hunter $18,000. That includes accommodations and food and guiding service. Should the hunter want to take a tour of the Yukon, that is all extra for the tourist industry—and that means more jobs and revenue for Yukon residents. n

e have all heard the term winter blues. I suspect, somewhere along the line, that is why winter festivals were created—something to liven up the cold, dull stretch of winter. In Canada, we have many winter festivals that take place every year. in the small northern town of Dawson City, there is Thaw di Gras Spring Carnival.

This year, Thaw di Gras will be held from March 18–20. You may be wondering about the name.

Yes, it is a word play on the Mardi Gras festival that is held every year in New Orleans, before Ash

Wednesday. “Mardi” was changed to “Thaw Di” because the end of March is when the Yukon starts to transition into the spring season.

Unlike Mardi Gras, which is known for participants who parade through the streets with colourful costumes and in marching bands, Thaw di Gras centers around

creative and slightly quirky winter activities.

Usually there are about 25 different events that take place.

Sometimes the events can change between the years. Past events have included adult tricycle racing, tea-boiling competitions, axe-throwing, searching for loonies in a haystack, snowshoe baseball, and human curling (where the rock is replaced with a human being who is slid across the ice), as well as a chili cookoff, dog show, cat show and the One-Dog Pull (where dogs try to haul their weight in dog kibble!).

There is also lots of live music, kids activities and a spectacular fireworks show over the Yukon River.

While Dawson City may be one of the smaller towns to host a winter carnival, it is by no means lacking in the fun and excitement department. And the best part is that most events are free! This year’s events have not been announced as of yet. For Thaw di Gras updates, visit www.

If you’ve ever thought of getting a tattoo, but are sitting on the fence, it’s worth spending a bit of time in local tattoo shops and chatting with the artists.

T

hey’re probably some of the most kind and communityminded folks you’ll find.

And if you’re like me, you might walk out wondering why the heck you don’t have any ink.

MOLOTOV AND BRICKS TATTOO — The Dynamic Trio —

Not having spent a lot of time in tattoo shops, I’m feeling a bit intimidated when I arrive at Molotov and Bricks Tattoo. But when I walk through the door, I’m warmly welcomed by one of the resident tattoo artists, Kirsty Wells, who is busy with a client.

Not long after, Dan Bushnell appears and immediately makes me feel at home. Wells’ sweet dog, Daisy, also totters up to say hello.

Bushnell and his wife, Sarah Gallagher, opened Molotov and Bricks in the same Wood Street location in 2012. Wells joined the shop permanently about five years ago. Together, the trio runs the shop. All three have equal voice in decision making, and they stand

behind the others when they have an idea. For example, Wells recently designed and sold T-shirts to support a COVID-19 fund for Canadian nurses.

“Any time you work with somebody and you get to lift them, is really great, really beautiful,” Bushnell said. “I have a lot of gratitude that we’ve been able to support so many people, because I’m fascinated to see what people do.”

While he’s pretty wellestablished now, Bushnell’s beginnings as a tattoo artist were a bit rocky. He was working in a youth arts and activism centre in Vancouver, which assisted young people in getting training.

One way to do this was through mentorships. When a young woman wanted to learn to tattoo, Bushnell set her up with a shop run by women. But there was a catch—he had to learn, too.

Up until then, Bushnell had worked on large art installations for cities. He was pretty proficient at it. But tattooing was a different story.

“I got a little full of myself in that whatever medium I studied, I picked up,” he said. “But then, when it came to tattooing, I didn’t have it. I wasn’t good at it. I had to learn to draw differently. I kind of sucked, at first, which made me have to do it.”

Bushnell’s background in community art projects (which involved a lot of collaborating with the locals) lent itself well to tattooing, which is a similar process on a smaller scale.

“You get really, really engaged with the community, in a really visceral way, where we see people in [the] super-dynamic moments of their lives. We see them when they’re celebrating, and we see them when they’ve had a loss.

And we’re asked to step in and be a part of that, with strangers, and it’s very powerful.” cont’d on page 7 ...

“You get to connect with people in a really safe and controlled setting. That can be as frivolous or as intentional or as emotional or as goofy as you want it to be.

Sometimes it’s really fun and sometimes it’s really meaningful, and that changes daily.

“Regardless of why someone’s there, it’s a moment I get to be a part of.”

Wells’ journey to being a tattoo artist was more linear than Bushnell’s. The first time she saw a heavily tattooed person, she was a little kid. “I ran to my mom, yanked on her dress and said, ‘Oh my god, Mom! Look at that person!

That’s what people have to look like.’ But I don’t remember that; I was too young.”

By the time she was 18, Wells was seriously pursuing becoming a tattoo artist. She worked in Germany for several years, and when she returned to Whitehorse to visit, she’d often be a guest artist at Molotov and Bricks, where she and Bushnell “got along like a house on fire.”

When it came time for Bushnell to find another artist to work permanently in the busy shop, Gallagher asked him who he’d like that person to be, if he

could choose anyone. He said that person would be Wells.

Coincidentally, Bushnell ran into Wells’ mom the very next day. She said that Wells was returning from Germany permanently and would be reaching out to him to work in the shop.

“It was kismet,” Bushnell said.

“That was a lovely moment.”

“Be careful what you wish for!”

Wells piped in from the next room.

For Bushnell, Wells makes him want to come to work each day.

“Kirsty and I really support one another,” said Bushnell. “We really lift each other up, and I know that if I’m feeling really bad and I really don’t want to drag myself in … I know that if I do, Kirsty will do something to take the edge off for me or to make it easier.”

Wells echoed that sentiment.

“I think I heard Dan mention that you can come into the shop in whatever mood you’re in—be it good or bad—regardless of how you come in, you leave a little different, more often than not on a more-positive note. That’s been a huge anchor in tattooing for me.

“I leave the shop, every day, a little bit better than when I came in.”

“Kirsty and I do a lot of things that are ridiculous, that make people pause, but we do it so joyously that you just can’t help but get involved.”

“A lot of people really find a stride with engaging in creativity when they come in here,” Wells said. “And that creates a huge sense of community.

“You come for the tattoos, you stay for the community.”

shop. Their chief executive officer, Jordi Mikeli-Jones, first opened Triple J’s as a music shop on Fourth Avenue in Whitehorse.

Mikeli-Jones said she was drawn to tattoos in her “formative years” when they were still taboo.

She got her first tattoo, at age 15, by an apprentice artist. Growing up in Whitehorse, she realized early on that there were no reputable, high-calibre artists in town. So, soon after she opened her music business, she brought up the first guest tattoo artist, in 2005.

“I never took a commission and really just wanted to spread the gospel of tattoo in the Yukon,” Mikeli-Jones said.

Since then, Triple J’s has expanded into other ventures, such as cannabis and skin care, and has also moved a few times.

The tattoo shop continues to feature guest artists who MikeliJones said are curated much like the “artists” in an art show.

“We look at what is currently being offered in Whitehorse, and finding specialty artists whose genres are not currently represented,” she explained.

“They must have a large portfolio and many years in the industry.

Most importantly, they must have a good attitude, be friendly and passionate about visiting the Great White North.”

That’s where Jamie Law comes in. Triple J’s initially brought him to Whitehorse from Edmonton, as a guest artist who specialized in script work. He’s now the sole resident artist.

“He very organically manifested into our next resident artist because he was here so often and was versatile in many

different styles,” Mikeli-Jones said. “He also loves people. When he made the decision to pursue a relationship with the Yukon, we made the decision to bring him on full-time. He has a very colourful personality, which jived well with our team.”

And it’s true. When I met Law, I was struck by the funny, friendly person behind the mask. He sums up in a few words his love affair with the Yukon and why he has made it his home.

“You fall in love with the place, fall in love with a girl,” Law said, referring to his wife, Kenedi Thompson, who is currently studying laser tattoo removal.

He describes himself as being like “the cat who came back”—he just kept returning to Triple J’s until Mikeli-Jones brought him on permanently.

But being a tattoo artist in the Yukon was not originally in his plans. After high school, he took the blue-collar path, working in a plywood factory for eight years.

It was around 2004 or 2005 that his best friend, who was dating a tattoo artist, suggested that Law consider apprenticing. That’s how he got his start, almost by accident.

“I’d always been artistic but never thought of art as a viable career,” Law said. “It’s always being made fun of in sitcoms, you know … but the creature I am always seemed compelled to create.”

Along with his creative abilities, Law brings a lot of people skills to his work. He said he has a good “bedside manner” with his clients.

“It’s a very unique skill set.

I don’t recommend it for most people because a lot of people

think Oh, it’s just drawing. It’s not just drawing. You have to be compassionate, you have to be mindful, you have to be empathetic—it’s a very intimate procedure, so you have to be able to deal with people.”

Law is best known for his script work, but he is proficient in many styles. For things he’s not so good at, like “portraits of mom,” he’s happy to refer clients to Kirsty Wells at Molotov and Bricks.

“When you start out as a tattoo artist, you’re full of ego and bluster and your id is on fullout Oh, I’m awesome … this is great, even though in your first five years, you’re producing your worst work. As you mature, you start to realize that other tattoo artists are not your competition; they’re your colleagues, they’re your friends, and they do different things than you. And that’s okay.”

Ultimately, Law hopes to open a family shop, with his wife and his sons, and to name it Vixen’s Den Tattoo and Removal. He also dreams of having a seasonal shop, in Dawson, called Outlaw’s Haven. He would like to visit smaller communities, such as Old Crow, rather than clients in those places always having to travel to Whitehorse.

Law is proud of the impact he has in people’s lives, and proud when his sons see people cross the street to greet him and to thank him.

“The love that I put in, I get back.

“You’re a positive part of the community, and people look forward to seeing you. That’s a cool job.”

He said that the more he learned about the art of tattoo, the more he appreciated it. He calls it “the top of art.”

“It’s so hard,” he said. “It’s so hard to do. It’s so ancient, too. It’s so old.”

Athron decided to become a cosmetic tattoo artist when the shop Gehmair was working in was looking for someone with that skill set.

“I blew my money and I took the schooling, and he started out as the junior artist down there,” she said.

The couple moved back to Whitehorse once COVID-19 hit.

Athron worked out of a home studio, at first, and they both worked for Highways and Public Works for a period of time. Now that Serotonin is open, they’re still in the process of setting up shop while juggling parental duties.

Athron’s work involves the intimidating process of tattooing a client’s face. She uses semipermanent and vegan inks to create freckles, powdering and lip colour. She shows me freckles she’s tattooed on her face—they are subtle and look natural.

In defining Gehmair’s style, Athron said that he does lots of “dark” tattoos, as well as Japanese-inspired designs and said that, between Gehmair and the other tattoo artists in town, people have a variety of options to choose from. She added that they would like to expand one day

and have even more tattoo artists in town.

“Offering more styles is just better for what you want to do for your body art-wise,” Athron said.

“Instead of getting the same style over and over, you can switch it up and get a bunch of different styles.”

The shop name, Serotonin Tattoos, stems from a desire to create “a happy environment to go to, to get away from what’s happening everywhere else,” Athron explained.

She added that getting a tattoo is a positive experience, addictive even though it’s painful, and both Athron and Gehmair recommend that everyone give it a shot.

“People come in and get a tattoo and feel like themselves,” Athron said. “It’s something they’ve thought about [for] a long time.

“They’re creating a self-image for themselves.”

While Athron acknowledges that Gehmair’s body tattooing may require more artistic ability and complicated machines, she said that their motivations are similar, and so is the impact on their clients. “It’s a passion.

It’s something we love doing. It changes lives. For me, people come to me and they’re very selfconscious about something and I get to literally change their lives.

“I’ve had people cry happy tears … They are just so grateful.

Those are the days I’m the happiest.”

“I enjoy it, it’s a passion,” Gehmair confirmed. “I learn something new every day, I get better and better every day.”

The Government of Yukon has announced new media funding initiatives with more options and opportunities for filmmakers from the territory ukon Media Funding has long been helpful to artists of all kinds in the territory, from musicians to filmmakers. As the arts and entertainment industry undergoes constant and rapid change, many creators find themselves needing to adapt, and their support programs need to adapt as well. This is why the Government of Yukon has revamped its media funding for filmmakers, with four new funding programs: the Predevelopment Fund, the Development Fund, the Media Production Fund and the Training Fund.

“The Yukon is full of excellent filmmakers, both new and established,” said Minister of Economic Development Ranj Pillai in a news release. “These new funds will provide them with the resources needed to take their work to new heights for the benefit of all Yukoners.”

The Government of Yukon heard feedback from the film industry, during public engagements, and took into account when deciding how to properly revamp their funding programs to best suit the needs of the industry. The new media funds serve as replacements for the previous film funds, which included the Film Location Incen-

The new funding will provide Yukon filmmakers with the resources needed to up their game while creating engaging work for their audience tive, the Film Training Initiative, the Filmmakers Fund the Film Development Fund, and the Film Production Fund.

These five programs were launched in 2004 and never received significant changes or updates. They had become outdated with the growth and changes the film industry has seen since then. Applications for the new programs will be taken in during a yearly opening period, starting this spring at varying dates for the four new programs.

There are no restrictions on the number of applicants that can receive funding, though if multiple submissions are received within 10 days of an application period’s opening date, and the funding to endorse them all is not available, applications will be assessed and prioritized based on the economic benefit their projects would provide to the Yukon. Successful applicants will receive funding once per project.

There are eligibility requirements that applicants must meet, chiefly among them being based in the Yukon, meaning must be regis-

tered to conduct business in the Yukon, must be majority owned by Yukon residents, must have a business address in the Yukon and other similar requirements. Between the four programs, many Yukon film industry professionals and beginners should be able to find something that suits them, and all who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply, regardless of how established they are.

In January, the Government of Yukon hosted a series of information sessions about the new programs. Those who missed the sessions are free to reach out with any questions or for guidance with their applications. O YE WILD IRISH An Ode to Irishness for St. Patrick’s Day

W

ith St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, and with mandates being eased for public spaces, it is likely that those of us deprived of access to communal celebration will certainly find a venue in which to toast a Guinness while belting out a traditional tune like “Drunken Sailor” or the softer “Galway Bay.” Yet, to consider any participation in St. Paddy’s Day festivities, one might check out the Irish section at your local Great Canadian Dollar Store and become overly concerned that any attachment to an Irish-streamed sentimentalism might relegate one to the realm of “Plastic Paddy” among more die-hard Irish loyalists.

I am certainly a Canadian, as my birth certificate states.

However, as we wade through globalized mosaics of societies, we learn of the power and threat of seeking out deeper connections to identity, and just how complex and political that concept has become in our modern world, as any historian on Ireland might well know.

As I grew up in Canada—in a small working-class community in the southern provinces—I came to understand my shallow ancestral connections to the “Old Country” through a variety of means: The Irish Rovers was the only music

my father would play, and The Dubliners seemed to be the only music my maternal uncle would weep over.

I got the sense, early on, that I was “Black Irish,” and had the meme: “I’m Black and I’m proud” from the novel and film by Roddy Doyle, The Commitments—a source of humour among my junior-high basketball team that consisted of a lot of self-identified Black, Brown and first-generation Irish descendants (needless to say I spent a lot of time benched, trying to prove my worth). And while I tried to tough it out on the court, at home, in my room, hung a poster entitled “Joyce’s Dublin” —a visual walking tour of prominent places from Ulysses.

“Broken Irish is better than clever English.”

My mum would make potato bread for Christmas Day brunch. It is called farls or fadge, depending on which side of the divide your “Irish” is sourced (from both in our family, of course!). A tradition my sister has carried on with her

own children. She will bake and send up slices to me, here in the North, as part of her Christmas package. A charming way to keep a connection alive, but, after two weeks in the mail, they arrive with quite a number of mould spores that aid both nostalgia and nausea.

My cousin was named Padraig (yup, an Irish Patrick). As he explained over a glass of whisky (the last drink I ever had) at his father’s (my uncle’s) wake: “My dad named me by a name he could never quite pronounce himself.” My uncle, who took a “Finnegan’s Wake,” was an oh-soIrish-Canadian (of third or fourth descent) stereotype, literate (for our family), drunk, who, unlike Finnegan, never quite woke up and who was passionately attached to the Irish cause. It was only after his death that a conflictual family tree emerged, one that challenged preconceived notions of our family’s “true” Irishness.

My late uncle: a much-loved character I have learned to equate to Margaret Laurence’s Uncle Dan (from A Bird in the House).

As I grew and learned aspects of Canadian and, by extension, the broader history of those who counted themselves among the Irish Diaspora, I came to view that history with both wonder and disdain. As the late Marxist activist and historian Noel Ignatiev states in How the Irish became White: “I wanted to understand why the Irish, coming from conditions about as bad as could be imagined and thrown into low positions when they arrived, came to side

with the oppressor, rather than with the oppressed [in some cases].”

As I grew, I also came to question why people would celebrate a day (and saint) that commemorated the mission of driving the pagan “snakes” out of Ireland. And with such drunken revelry?

Now, this Saint Patrick’s Day you will not find this writer dressed up in shamrocks, a leprechaun hat, with a drink or in any green attired outfit. During my younger years, you would certainly find me at the best Irish pub in town, with the darkest beer in hand, listening to the trance beats of the bodhrán— the Irish drum.

I think Ireland and the Irish people have created a rich cultural legacy. I find the history, music and storytelling traditions to be wildly fascinating, funny and worthwhile. And throughout that history, the Irish have accepted a plethora of characters as among

hose shows, all taking place in March and April, will mark the first time YAC has been open for performances since pandemic measures forced a closure on Dec. 21.

After the three-month hiatus, there’s a palpable buzz around the announcement, says Michele Emslie, director of programming at YAC. “Among everyone,” Emslie says over the phone. “From all of us who work here, to our volunteers, to our patrons.

The show is a co-production between the CanDance Network Creation Fund, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Edmonton’s Brian Webb Dance Company, YAC, dance Immersion and Canadian Stage, and is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Emslie says the show will have a local component to it, as Crazy Smooth is working with Yukon dancers through a partnership with Leaping Feats in Riverdale.

Other shows, including the one featuring local musician McNally and Biali’s, are postponements from previous months. Spidey the Mentalist, whose mindreading act has been featured on The Today Show and TMZ, was originally scheduled to perform in 2020, right before the pandemic caused widespread closures of performance venues.

Emslie says YAC is planning more outdoor shows for the summer, just in case, but she’s cautiously optimistic about the spring. YAC can accommodate 50 per cent capacity. She says if people can book in bubbles, it will help with fitting the maximum allowed, as YAC seats groups with distancing measures in mind.

Emslie says experiencing something together, safely, in a space that offers the sound and sightlines of the Arts Centre will be a poignant experience after so much isolation this winter.

“It’s not the same as sitting in your living room in front of your laptop, clapping together and crying together and experiencing the same emotions, or experiencing different emotions?” she says. “There’s nothing that can replace that.”

“We’re just so excited, really over the moon, that we’re open again for our shows, but also for other presenters like Whitehorse Concerts, that we can all bring live performing arts back again. It feels like a new day.”

The March and April lineup includes Juno winner Alex Cuba, a dance production called In My Body, concerts from Ron Sexsmith, Laila Biali with Jodi Proznick, Whitehorse’s Kim Beggs, Ryan McNally & Blue Moon Marquee, Jim Byrnes and a surreal performance from entertainer, Spidey the Mentalist.

Emslie says choosing one show she’s most looking forward to is like picking her favourite child, but she’s excited about Cuba and In My Body, partly because YAC is proud to have been one of five organizations across Canada that commissioned In My Body.

Bboyizm is the premier street dance company in Canada, run by dancer-choreographer, Crazy Smooth. For In My Body, Crazy Smooth brings together an intergenerational group of dancers and an international creative team for an intensely athletic investigation of the evolution of self and the effects of aging on street dancers. March 10 will be for an older audience while March 11 will focus on youth in Grade 8 and higher.

A gifted singer and songwriter whose songs are by turns earnest and playful, Ron Sexsmith has won acclaim not only from critics but from fellow performers like Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and John Hiatt. Originally slated for Feb. 16, this concert has been moved to April 12 instead. In partnership with Music from the Edges Canada, Yukon’s McNally will perform with swinging blues band Blue Moon Marquee.

Artists such as Lonnie Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, Memphis Minnie, and Django Reinhardt are deeply infused in the soul of Blue Moon’s music.

Ryan McNally puts most of his energy into his passion for studying acoustic traditional blues, jazz, and old-time music. This led him to spend a winter in New Orleans where he wrote the majority of the material featured on Steppin’ Down South.

Popular Yukon singer-songwriter Kim Beggs will be joined by a quartet to perform music from her new, upcoming album. Beggs delivers a heartfelt darkness in a beautiful backwoods beat driven performance. Sincere, vulnerable, clear eyed and tough, Beggs has garnered seven Western Canadian Music Award nominations and three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations plus a nomination for Independent Music Award in the USA. Kim is currently working on her 6th album recording. She has toured with Buffy Saint-Marie, Chris Jagger and more.

Legendary blues icon and actor, Jim Byrnes has released numerous outstanding albums including producing many with Steve Dawson, one of North America’s most critically acclaimed roots music producers. Byrnes has been performing the blues for nearly 50 years, earning multiple awards and had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues: from Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray.

TEAM WORK Victoria Gold’s AME Award for Excellence in Mine Development On February 2, Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell was honoured with the Association for Mineral Exploration’s 2021 E.A. Scholz Award for Excellence in Mine Development in BC or the Yukon.

Presented in a ballroom filled with McConnell’s colleagues and peers at the AME Awards Gala at Roundup in Vancouver, McConnell accepted this prestigious award on behalf of the entire Victoria Gold team recognizing how he and the team persevered to explore, define, develop, construct and advance the company’s Eagle Gold Mine to commercial production.

Accolades for McConnell and his work continue to come in from around the country; including from the territory’s leadership in a Government of Yukon statement issued on the day of the awards ceremony.
