Arts Underground’s current exhibition, Fantasy in Miniature, brings a little magic into the darkest month of the year.

T

he artists, who are all members of Yukon Art Society, were free to interpret the theme any way they liked, in whatever medium they chose. The result is a variety of work ranging

from abstract painting and mice in knight costumes to small pottery vessels and fanciful pincushions. Edwige Graham’s whimsical pincushions are like ornatelyadorned cupcakes in a pastry shop window. It’s like the star baker from The Great Canadian Baking Show made an amazing show-stopper with felt, beads and buttons instead of flour, eggs and milk. Similar to Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot, Asia Hyde’s root vegetable `guardians” (Carrot, Beet Root and Green Onion) are spindly-legged characters that will brighten your kitchen while perhaps providing some protection. Dee Bailey presents us with an enchanted forest in three small works. A small lantern is hung from the branch of a Lodgepole pine, lighting the way for forest

Heidi Hehn takes us back to fantasy with small paintings of mice dressed as knights. Kathy Piwowar’s series of hares under the full moon seems like an ode to the winter solstice. Valerie Ross’s Moonlight Ride features a witch silhouetted against a similar moon. ploit or endanger, intentionally or not. Collection is a mixed media work with a grid with specimens of butterflies and moths, victims of human’s tendency to capture, contain and categorize nature. Tundra Ghosts features three barely-perceptible caribou in a vast, empty tundra that is marred with streaks of black, oils perhaps. The animal subjects in Wandering Hare and Rabbit Business seem to inhabit odd worlds with strange

colours and damaged landscapes. In Viewpoint, four mountain goats are perched atop rocky cliffs, reminding us that we will never surpass their ability to navigate in their treacherous habitat. A few of the works feature brighter colours. YUKON VENTURE ANGELS HAS LAUNCHED A new Yukon-based angel investment group by local leaders is now in operation

Y

ukon Venture Angels (YVA) was born out of a desire to see the Yukon’s private sector lift up and champion local start-up businesses and diminish the divide between grant funding and later-stage investments. The initiative was introduced to the community in November with a virtual introduction event, held over Zoom during Yukon Innovation Week, in which members of the public were invited to join and participate by sharing their thoughts and ideas. An in-person launch gathering at Northlight Innovation Hub was planned, but has since been postponed due to COVID. YVA is an angel investment group, meaning it aims to provide capital for start-up businesses to get off the ground, which is usually given in exchange for convertible debt or ownership equity. YVA as a group does not invest, rather it is a group of investors. Both experienced investors and first-time angels looking to learn more about the world of growing businesses are welcomed and encouraged to collaborate with YVA.

room for improvement in how this is done in the territory. By leveraging the power of private investment and membership, they aim to help build a genuinely diverse,

robust and resilient Yukon economy. As the business world becomes more and more global, it is imperative that the Yukon adapts, as YVA president Barrett Horne articulated. “Historically, the Yukon was thought of as an isolated place— but remoteness is no longer defined by geography,” said Horne in a press release. “Today, it’s defined by connectivity; the Yukon’s market is now the world.” Because the territory’s relative isolation is not the barrier it once was, Horne believes companies from the Yukon should seize the opportunity to expand their enterprises across Canada and beyond, with YVA helping them achieve this. “Our local should have access to capitol that will allow them to become global-facing ventures, and that starts with a strong network of educated, impact-minded angel investors at home.” To learn more about Yukon Venture Angels, and to stay up to date with the postponed launch event, www.yukoninnovationweek.com/ event/introducing-yukon-venture-angels-2/. “Resiliency in our future means a diversified territorial economy,” said Horne. “If we are to be resilient in the face of whatever happens next, then we need strong, private-sector businesses with start-ups hiring and rooted here. How do we fertilize the field? We create the conditions for success to foster and grow.” n

Julie Jai and David Trick Julie Jai and David Trick are the co-founders of the Yukon Prize for Visual Arts.

ART IN THE YUKON, ART IN MONTREAL Maybe not so different?

W

hat does it take for an artist to become wellknown in the Canadian art world? We often think the Yukon’s situation is much different from that of Canada’s major cities. But recently we spoke with Clarence Epstein, executive director of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation, based in Montreal. He argued there are common threads between the situations of artists in the Yukon and artists in Montreal. What does the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation do as it relates to the visual arts? The Bronfman family has supported the arts in Canada for three generations. In the current generation, Stephen and Claudine Bronfman have made it their priority to focus on Montreal as a centre for the elaboration of the Canadian arts scene. Montreal is a hub of culture, and they want successful projects in the city to be a springboard for other local, provincial and federal initiatives. But Montreal is already a great cultural centre. Why did they choose this priority? Montreal has many cultural strengths. But its communities are often divided by ethnicity and language. They each see Montreal through a different lens, so it’s not always easy to get them to align on a common cultural plan. What’s missing is some cross-community threading, so people who are committed to the arts realize their overlap with other likeminded people in the city. Montreal is like a petri dish of Canada. We have so many diverse groups dedicated to the arts, it’s all there, but people don’t have

Montreal, one of Canada’s premier artistic hubs the connections. As a Foundation, we are very hands-on in all of our projects, trying to create the bridges that will reinforce the city as a whole. If we can make it work in Montreal, we can work with partners to scale it up and make it work nationally.

we need to help artists get their messages to more people. Private donors can help create the momentum. It’s hard for artists, by themselves, to generate enough attention outside their own community. That’s where a strong ecosystem comes in.

Through your work you see many aspects of Canada’s arts ecosystem. What are its strong points? What is missing? In Europe people are raised to appreciate art as a central aspect of their identity. In Canada this is missing. Our arts ecosystems – in other words, the network of people and institutions who teach and create art and make it possible for others to enjoy it – are based distinctly in each of our provinces and regions. Culture should be something that connects the country. To help us see what we have in common,

What does this mean for artists in smaller communities? Local artists often find they have to leave home to be recognized. This same pattern applies to athletes and entertainers, too. It applies whether you are from the Yukon or from Montreal. No matter where artists are, they need to get out, develop their reputation, build their network, and become relevant on the national or international levels as much as in their regions. Once they achieve a certain level of critical success, their hometown is often all the more proud to recognize them and be

associated with them. Social media can help make connections, but a good network includes being represented by a dealer. It’s hard for an artist to make all their commercial contacts, do the marketing, promote their work, and sell it, all on their own. An elite athlete who is obligated to having a second job never gets up to the level of the athlete who has a support system that allows them to focus on honing their skills. Does it matter that Yukon art does not have a defining characteristic or brand, the way there is for Inuit art? No one wants to be stereotyped. Artists should not follow what they think is popular or what fits a local pattern. They will fail big time if they do that, and they know it.

PHOTO: Pixabay You should celebrate the artists and spread the word about their talent – irrespective of their local connection. A community can support its artists, but ultimately the innate talents of artists is at the core of their success. ******************* Speaking with Clarence gave us new insight into the challenges facing Yukon artists. The Yukon does not have the art dealers, galleries, critics, and large base of art collectors that Montreal enjoys. Yet as a share of the total workforce, the number of Yukoners who make a living as visual artists is the highest in Canada, probably because artists like living here and find inspiration here. To truly support artists, we need to step up our game and think about how to share their talent with a wider audience. n

THE STEELES WANDERED AT RANDOM AROUND THE WORLD Meanderings by Peter Steele Self Published 313 pages $19.95 Kindle edition $6.99

P

eter Steele begins this book by defining his terms and setting the stage. “’Meander’ in the Oxford English dictionary reads ’To wander at random, winding sinuously,’” This is very definitely what happens in this book, which chronicles the number of journeys, Peter began in 1985. At the time, he was 50. His marriage to Sarah, his wife and travel companion, was 25 years old. They journeyed every couple of years for the next decade, until Sarah’s death in 1995. Following that, there was one more journey that he took with a good friend in 1998. Peter may have been born with a wandering foot. Born in London, he had lived and worked there, in Nepal, Labrador, Suffolk, Bristol, Mount Everest and finally in Whitehorse. He still lives here in retirement, except for forays to Atlin about which he has written an entire book, the first of his that I ever read. When not working as a doctor, he and Sarah travelled, spending time in various parts of China, India, Bhutan, Tibet, South America, lots of Europe and the Sahara. Peter likes to walk, ride a bicycle (lots of that in this book), mush and ski. The journeys in this book are mostly about the pair of them deciding to revisit places they have

been before, so it begins with a trip to China. As with each section of the book, there’s a simple sketch map to give an approximate idea of where they went. The Steeles liked to travel both lightly and frugally. This shows in

stay, they found they could get into Tibet, which they had not been allowed to do the last time they were in that part of the world, so they jumped at the opportunity. Perhaps because it was new to them, this is one of the larger sections of the book. The first odyssey concludes with a tour of India, where they had worked and knew a few people they wanted to visit. This meant that some of their accommodations were a step up from the sorts of places they’d found while not travelling the usual touristy routes. The way they travelled, a good bath or shower was often a luxury. The next trip, four years later, was to Africa, mostly the southern and eastern parts. The trip followed the usual meandering pattern, avoiding high-profile tourist spots and sometimes taking off on tangents, exploring bits of Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa. In 1993, the trip began with Peter teaching environmental wilderPHOTO: Promotional ness medicine on a small cruise ship all of the narratives. They trav- sailing close to Antarctica. road—grotty hotels, buses with no leg room, faucets that dripped, cracked basins and the thousand natural shocks the Overland traveler is heir to.” Tis not, to continue borrowing from Hamlet, a way of travel devoutly to be wished by most folks, but one which the Steeles did desire. They meandered up through Chile and Patagonia, particularly interested in the areas that had been settled by the Welsh, as Peter had spent part of his childhood in Wales. There was every intention of doing more travelling together, but Sarah, who had been ill for some time, died in 1995. In 1998, Peter set out with Rod Tuck, an old friend, to retrace some of the journey his grandfather, a Presbyterian missionary, had followed when travelling from China to home in Britain. It was to be largely a trip by train, along the old Silk Road route, what might well be a three week journey “to hell (and hopefully back) and a good chance of ending our long and happy friendship.” It was not without its moments of acrimony, this 20,000 mile odyssey, but Peter records that their attempt to live on $10 a day ended with them still speaking to each other. A sketch map shows the route, east from Russia to China, north to Beijing, through Mongolia and Siberia, back to Moscow, and west to Latvia, all by rail, although the travelling conditions were often no better than those buses in India, Africa and South America. “We were rarely bored, our friendship was strengthened, and we had seen, albeit superficially, a huge portion of the surface of the northern hemisphere.” n

WINNER ANNOUNCED FOR THE YUKON PRIZE FOR VISUAL ARTS The recipient of the second annual Yukon Prize for Visual Arts is Joseph Tisiga

T

he winner of this year’s Yukon Prize for Visual Arts, selected from 107 entries, is multidisciplinary artist Joseph Tisiga. Tisiga was selected out of a slew of finalists that also included Ken Anderson, Amy Ball, Krystle Silverfox, Sho Sho Esquiro and Veronica Verkley. Tisiga was announced as the prize’s winner at a gala event on November 20. Joseph Tisiga’s multidisciplinary arts practice is mostly rooted in painting and drawing. His work includes performance, photography, sculpture and installation, and reflects upon notions of identity and what contributes to this construct. Themes in Tisiga’s art such as community, nationality, family, history, location, real and imagined memories are becoming more and more relevant in the current climate. His works explore cultural and social inheritance, as well as the mundane, the metaphysical and the mytho-

and later another virtual panel with remaining finalists Sho Sho Esquiro, Ken Anderson and Amy Ball. The day of the gala event, the artists took groups of attendees through their exhibitions to give them new perspective and insight into their work, inspirations and creative processes. The six 2021 finalists for the Yukon Prize were selected by an independent jury of three arts professionals which included Gaëtane Verna, Ryan Doherty and Candice Hopkins. Verna is the director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, while Doherty is Chief Curator of Contemporary Calgary and Hopkins is an internationally known independent curator and a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation. Now in its second year, the main objective of the Yukon Prize for Visual Arts is to recognize the achievements and quality of work of the Yukon’s diverse community of visual artists, as well as to facilitate promotion of Yukon-made visual art beyond the Yukon, both nationally and internationally. To read more about the Yukon Prize for Visual Arts visit https:// yukonprize.ca/. Applications are not yet open for the 2022 edition, but the Yukon Prize will return next year. n

Gingerbread protein smoothie

C

hristmas is coming and with it, all the gingerbread-flavoured things! So next time you’ve got a hankering for gingerbread cookies, try this delicious protein smoothie recipe. Ingredients: • 1 cup eggnog (or milk of choice!) • 1/2 tbsp molasses • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract • 1/4 cup oat flour (or 2 tbsp of cashew or almond butter)

• 1 scoop of collagen powder (or vanilla protein powder) • 1/8 tsp cinnamon • 1 pinch of ground ginger • 1/2 to 1 cup of ice cubes (optional, to thicken and chill) Directions: 1. Put all of the wet ingredients into your blender or food processor. 2. Add your dry ingredients on top as they tend to stick to the sides of the blender if you put the dry ingredients in first. 3. Lastly, add your ice cubes on top. 4. Blend thoroughly and enjoy!

Make a difference! Take action to fight climate change

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BATTERY The Yukon is experiencing climate change twice as fast and more intensely than much of the world. You can take action to build resiliency and mitigate how the climate crisis affects you, your family and your community. Check out the Government of Yukon’s social media campaign over the next four months to:  see how climate change is impacting us right now;  meet Yukoners who are taking actions;  learn concrete steps to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions too! Everyone can take action and make a difference in our fight against climate change. Get informed! Find us on:

Batteries store energy that is needed to start your vehicle, there are a few things to remember about batteries. Regular maintenance #1 is making sure the battery is secured properly so it doesn’t vibrate, keeping connections clean and tight at the terminal, with loose connections you may run into problems like vehicles won’t start, alternator not charging properly and could cause battery and alternator failure. Making sure your battery is ready for the colder weather we see in the Yukon like adding a battery pad or battery blanket to keep it warm when the vehicle is not in use; by keeping the battery warm in colder weather you will get the most power out of the battery on start up. Here is a side tip: if you don’t drive your vehicle on a regular basis and are experiencing battery problems, you could ask you local mechanic to install a low amp battery maintainer; this will keep your battery fully charged even when the vehicle is parked for a long time.

HISTORY Decade in Review; Becoming the Eagle Gold Mine Excerpt from Dublin Gulch: A History of the Eagle Gold Mine by Michael Gates In June 2011, Victoria Gold and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun signed an extension to their exploration agreement, which was superseded later in the year by the signing of a Comprehensive Cooperation and Benefits Agreement (CBA). While providing certainty for developing the Eagle Gold Project (now the mine) and expanding the exploration program, the agreement provided the First Nation with employment and economic development opportunities while respecting and promoting their desired environmental protection objectives. Among other things, the agreement created a protocol for ongoing communications between the two parties. The environmental assessment process was also progressing and the feasibility study was nearing completion and was expected to be released early in 2012. Meanwhile, the Victoria Gold team had expanded from 10 employees to 30. By August, gold had broken through the $1,800 per ounce mark and in the following months it went on a frenzied roller-coaster ride. But not was all roses and sunshine for the company. After reaching historical highs, the price of gold began to tumble through 2013. Dublin Gulch: A History of the Eagle Gold Mine, which earned a prestigious Axiom Business Book Award earlier this year makes for a truly local gift this holiday season. It is available at book stores in Whitehorse and Dawson City, in the Village of Mayo and via amazon.ca. All proceeds from sales in Mayo benefit Every Student, Every Day to support increased student attendance in the community.

Good news came at the end of 2015 however, when Victoria Gold received its water use license allowing for the construction, operation and closure of the Eagle Gold Project. Today, the Eagle Gold Mine, which celebrated its first gold pour in September 2019 and commercial production on July 1, 2020, employs between 350 and 400; 50 per cent of which are Yukoners, including First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun citizens making Victoria Gold the territory’s largest private sector employer.

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine located northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
