Maya is a visual artist and art teacher, based in Whitehorse, Yukon. She was born and raised in Israel, and has traveled to the United States, Canada and Europe. Astrological Circumstances: I cast the reading during the Waning Crescent in Leo, in a plume of white sage, with compassionate intentions. May it harm none.

Physical Description: We encounter The Queen of Swords seated on stone throne carved with butterflies and cherubs. Clouds billow at the level of the throne, but the sky above is clear and blue. A single bird flies way above the Queen’s head.

The Queen holds one very large sword in her right hand. Wrapped around her left wrist is a mourning bracelet. Her crown is made of gold butterflies and her robes are decorated with clouds. There are trees in the distance; the Queen sits on a higher level, well above the treetops.

Metaphysical Description & Advice: In the Queen of Swords, we are situated in the element of Air, where we find the bird’s eye view and a higher perspective on life events. And, well, actual air.

Rulership:

Communicate your needs. Be brave and let people know how you are doing. Try admissions like, “I feel some social routine would help me feel stronger. Can we make a standing weekly phone date?”.

Air flows and moves and can change quickly. Remember when you feel anxious, the feelings are not going to be permanent. Do not grip the feelings, instead observe them, and like a cloud, let the feelings change. The Queen of Swords, advises mentally riding the clouds into the sky to shift your perspective. See how small human bodies really are on this big planet. Think of yourself as one part of the whole, just one part of the butterfly wing. You do not have to carry the whole burden alone.

Grief and depression often accompany anxiety. The Queen of Swords is familiar with these difficult experiences. She knows loneliness will most likely aggravate anxiety. Try to spend time with folks in-person and through phone and video too. It can be a

lot of work to stay connected, but the effort will pay off! Don’t give up. I believe in you. Please always seek counsel when you are feeling overwhelmed emotionally.

Communicate your needs. Be brave and let people know how you are doing. Try admissions like, “I feel lonely, but I’m having trouble making and keeping plans, can you please help? or, “I feel some social routine would help me feel stronger. Can we make a standing weekly phone date?”. Your loved ones can help you better if they know what is happening. Communicate the hard stuff, get it out and see if you feel lighter.

The Queen of Swords reminds us of the dangers of loneliness, but also of the joys of independence. You may need to literally get some fresh air by yourself to clear your head and gain perspective. Remember who YOU are and what YOUR dreams and needs are.

The Queen of Swords suggests we battle anxiety with a clearhead and logic. Communication is also key! The suit of Air holds narrative and stories – what we tell who and how. Clean up your communication and turf stuff like gossip, cruelty, passive-aggressive comments, rudeness, anything hurtful. If you allow someone to hurt you through language, or if you hurt others, this will make your anxiety way worse. Think carefully about the stories you tell. Seek truth and speak truth, keeping in mind the higher perspective. What effect ultimately will your words have? Be honest but be careful. Ease up on your intense judgements of others, you will only be judged harshly in return and no gains will be made.

Observe and listen. See and hear the others around you. Perhaps there is something in their perspective you are missing.

Step out of your mental silo and see more clearly what really surrounds you. n

SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS Yukon’s first renewable-energy cooperative

Y

ukon’s first renewableenergy cooperative has kicked off with the formation of the Solstice Energy Co-Op. This organization intends to build a utility-scale solar power project that any Yukoner can invest in and, over time, profit from! Renewable energy co-ops are a major shift in power production that’s happening worldwide. Community members take power into their own hands by pooling resources to build significant renewable energy projects. The power that is generated is sold to the utility company and the earnings are distributed to the owners. It’s a win for the climate and a win for the community.

This model of green investment has swept across Europe and North America, not only as a means of developing renewable energy, but also as a safe, reliable investment.

By selling power to the grid, cooperatives have the advantage of being able to anticipate their year-to-year earnings based on long-term power purchase agreements. It is this predictability that has made them a popular form of direct investment in contrast to other volatile market-based investments. Both Vancouver and Toronto’s solar co-ops currently expect 4 per cent annual returns on investment. In Europe, there are approximately 1,900 solar coops operating today, with over 1.2 million members.

“Well can’t I just put solar panels on my roof if they are such a good idea?” you may wonder.

PHOTO: Pixabay Household solar is a great idea and a great way to save money on your power bill, but not everyone has this option. Solar co-op projects make investment in solar power a possibility for those of us living in condos or renting. Furthermore, the cost of putting solar panels on your house can be very high. In a solar co-op you can choose to invest in a single share or as many as your budget allows.

So far, Solstice has secured

$84,000 in feasibility funding, with support from the Cooperators, New Market Funds and the Yukon Government. Solstice is currently in the process of identifying an installation location. The facility may be constructed on an appropriate rooftop, or built at ground level. Once the site is selected and the scale of the project is finalized, Solstice can begin estimating power production, anticipated revenue and share prices. They

are targeting a spring 2022 construction kick-off, if the pandemic-related supply chain challenges allow it.

With COP26 (2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference) underway and with the constant barrage of worrisome news about climate change, it can feel like it’s too late. Maybe we resign ourselves to the sense that one person can’t do enough. However, it is not too late for us to turn that

worry into action, understanding that any reduction in carbon we achieve today will benefit the communities of tomorrow. Projects like Solstice are acts of community solidarity in reducing our emissions but are also a powerful signal to government and private equity; if a bunch of neighbors can make money on solar, then what are you waiting for?

sing buttermilk in place of regular milk makes the batter a bit thicker, so feel free to add an additional few tablespoons of water if you’re having a hard time getting the crepes to spread.

The buttermilk also gives the crepes a lovely, fresh, slightly sour taste that plays off the salty bacon and the slightly bitter birch syrup. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS ❑ 1 ½ cups butter milk ❑ 1 cup flour ❑ ¼ tsp ground or cracked black pepper

In a bowl, whisk together buttermilk, flour, black pepper, eggs and sugar until smooth.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place bacon on a lined sheet and cook until crisp, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and keep warm while you make the crepes.

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add a dollop of butter and, when melted, add ¼ cup of crepe batter to the skillet and swirl so that the batter covers the pan. When bubbles begin to form on the surface and edges are brown, flip the crepe and cook until the other side is brown. Repeat with remaining batter.

Serve the crepes topped with bacon and drizzle with birch syrup.

isiting Karaky Grocery Store is unlike any other shopping experience you’ll find in Whitehorse. The family-owned business is run by Basem and Kaitlin Alrawashdeh, who opened the store in the former Greyhound station on Second Avenue last year. In the midst of the significant challenges of opening a new business, and the birth of their baby in January, the couple are bringing Yukoners an endless variety of international foods.

Karaky is a family business, and the couple support one another through the ups and downs. They also have their son, their “little guy,” who has a playpen for on-site visits while his parents are running the shop. The grocery has a laidback, friendly vibe that encourages a slow saunter down the aisles and a friendly chat at the check-out as part of the shopping excursion.

Karaky is named after the small town in Jordan where Basem grew up in a business-oriented family.

When he moved to Canada four years ago, he brought with him a vision of owning a business of his own.

“He’s the brains behind Karaky,” Kaitlin says.

While Basem didn’t initially know what kind of business he wanted to open, Kaitlin says her husband is happy with his choice.

It’s his mission to provide Yukoners with international foods they might not find anywhere else in town. The products come from many countries and represent a wide variety of cuisine – Middle Eastern, South Asian, European and Japanese to name a few. Some highlights from my first shopping trip included a large tub of halva from Turkey and

some delicious ready meals from India which Kaitlin says are one of their most popular items.

“People come in and buy five, six, seven at a time,” she says.

Basem brings in foods that are requested by customers, many of whom are relative newcomers to the Yukon. Kaitlin says that her husband realized how much comfort people get when they have their favourite meals available.

For the Alrawashdeh family, Kaitlin says it’s always special when they sit down and have a Jordanian meal. For example, when Basem’s brother, who also lives in Whitehorse, recently returned from a trip to Jordan, they reminisced about home and their mom’s cooking.

“If you can go home and have a home-cooked meal that feels like home, there’s a lot of comfort in that,” Kaitlin says.

“Food sparks memories,” she adds. “And different stories come from that.”

Basem “really tries to find” the foods that invoke stories, whether they’re memories from faraway hometowns or from international travel. In order to do so, Basem deals with suppliers across Canada. He’s travelled to Edmonton, he’s been to BC, and he works with someone in Toronto to access products.

For these efforts, the Alrawashdehs are getting an appreciative reception from the community.

Customers come not only from Whitehorse, but from other Yukon communities as well, including Carmacks, and Watson Lake. Kaitlin mentions folks from Dawson who call ahead of time and do a preorder for pick-up when they’re in town.

The pre-order process will be made easier when the Karaky website gets launched in the future. In

COVID-19 restrictions mean an online (but still joyful!) holiday concert this year

he Whitehorse Community Choir is back with a new show, “Tidings and Tinsel,” for the 2021 season, albeit online only.

The group had initially hoped they’d be able to perform live this year, and had planned several shows at the Yukon Arts Centre, but unfortunately the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the territory and the return to a state of emergency made that impossible.

Disappointed but undaunted, the choir quickly switched gears, and the company will now be recording one show with all three choir groups in it.

The three choir groups who will be performing are each made up of 20 singers, and each group will enter from one side of the stage and exit from another to ensure that the groups are not able to mingle between sets. Usually, there is no limit to how many people can participate in the community choir, but this season, registration was full within three days due to the limited number of people allowed in.

Despite still being under restrictions, director Barbara Chamberlain said the singers have been happy to be able to get together and sing together. They are all looking forward to presenting a variety of ma-

“It’s really nice to be able to sing together and everyone’s loving that,” said Chamberlain. “But we still have to wear masks and it’s hard to take a breath, even if we’re using our choir masks.”

The rehearsal season for the Christmas concert hasn’t been without its difficulties either.

Some singers have had to miss rehearsals to isolate after coming into contact with people infected with COVID-19. One member, a doctor, even contracted the virus himself. Luckily, by taking strict safety precautions and cancelling rehearsals when needed, the choir

has been able to continue on.

“Any time anyone is sick, they don’t come,” said Chamberlain.

Some of the song selections for “Tidings and Tinsel” include Christmas songs such as “Seven

Joys of Mary” and “Christmas in Carrick,” which will be sung by the Women’s Choir. Also performing will be the SATB Choir and SATB Advanced Choir, who will also be performing Christmas songs, both

lesser-known and more popular ones.

Chamberlain has a general rule that she doesn’t like to repeat songs at Christmas concerts within a five-year period. Selecting the songs for this year’s shows was tricky, as a limited budget meant Chamberlain had to pick most of the selections out of the library the choir already had.

“You want a variety,” she said.

“We’re just trying to keep things upbeat here too, so I picked mostly stuff that was upbeat. There’s three slow songs in the whole thing and that’s it.”

The performances will be directed by Chamberlain, and the choirs will be accompanied by musicians Barry Kitchen and Andy Slade.

“Tidings and Tinsel” will be presented via video by the Whitehorse Community Choir from Dec. 4 to Dec 16. Tickets are pay-whatyou-like and can be purchased at yukontickets.com.

the meantime, customers can see new products, like baklava, teas, and spices, posted on Facebook and Instagram.

Along with his tenacity in sourcing foods, Basem is a friendly and easy-going presence behind the grocery counter. During my first shopping experience at Karaky, I accidently knocked a chocolate bar off the counter and into my shopping bag. When I hurriedly returned it to the counter, he placed it back into my bag, and added another without charging me for either.

“Basem is very personable,” Kaitlin affirms. She says that he has long chats with customers and shares their stories when he gets home from the grocery.

As popular as Karaky is, opening the business was not without its obstacles. One of those was of course COVID-19, but the Alrawashdehs were able to put the pandemic into perspective.

“I think Basem would also say that although [the pandemic] had its challenges, we’ve been okay,” Kaitlin says. “We’ve been able to navigate it.”

Another challenge for the couple was finding a suitable location for the business. It’s not easy to find commercial space in Whitehorse. Basem wanted a good location, so he worked hard to get the old Greyhound station. And once he had it, the space needed to be converted into a grocery store. When the contractor they’d hired to build shelves didn’t show up, Basem did the job himself, even though he’d never done carpentry before.

“Basem would never tell anyone that,” Kaitlin says. “I do, because I’m so proud of him.

Whether it’s contractors or COVID or different things, he loves a challenge. For him it’s like, ‘You know what? This is just another challenge.’”

Kaitlin adds that, because Basem comes from a businessoriented family, he’s accustomed to working hard, and is wellequipped to deal with setbacks.

“You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

It’s not as easy as you might think

I

don’t honestly remember my first encounter with chipmunks, but my mother has told the story so many times I feel as though I remember it clearly.

I was three years old, as was my friend Peter from the cottage next door. We liked our tiny striped friends who ran around stuffing their cheeks with fallen raspberries. We began to feel sorry for them because they lived in dirt holes. One industrious day we decided to clean their home for them—by pouring a pail of

soapy water down the tunnel we’d seen them disappear into.

Chipmunks are members of the same family as red squirrels, but they don’t have the same tendency to gnaw through the wiring in your house, or pull the insulation out of your walls. They pretty much mind their own business.

They’re beneficial protectors of our forests due to their habit of hiding food under old leaves. This acts as a mulch to help forgotten seeds sprout and grow.

At 16, I spent a summer at my friend Lisa’s cottage. We wore a lot of beads and wrote a Jethro Tullinspired song called The Giraffe’s Nodule. We taught chipmunks to eat out of our hands using the one recipe they simply cannot resist— peanut butter on toast. It must be

the waft of air from the hot bread that carries that most delectable scent past their noses. If you make it, they will come.

The first time I saw a chipmunk in the Yukon, I was on a hike with my husband at Miles Canyon. We sat on a tree to rest. There it was, sitting just over there looking at us. I had no idea they lived this far north. Since then, I’ve seen the odd one here and there, in forests or peeking out of wood piles.

Time To Get Creative PHOTO: Pixabay past. I hadn’t seen one for years!

I remembered how much I liked them.

So I decided to see if I could tempt chipmunk to stick around.

I cleared a spot on an old table stacked with recycled boards and stashed a few peanuts there. It’s a small, awkward place to gain access to which, I was fairly certain, would prevent the larger, conniving squirrels from snatching the treats.

I hid several peanuts there every day and the next morning they were always gone. I really wanted to know who was taking them and (finally!) one evening noticed that some, but not all, the peanuts had disappeared!

Was the perp in the process? Were those dastardly squirrels raiding the proverbial cookie jar? I stuck

around to see what I might see.

I didn’t wait long. After two or three minutes there was a rustling sound. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a blur of movement under the table! Such a quiet sound, but there it was again, followed by a small peep which didn’t sound anything like the brash scolding of a chattery squirrel. Any moment now and the charming striped suit of Chipmunk was bound to appear!

I was taken completely by surprise when up popped a nuthatch! I blinked several times, possibly gasped out loud. How did a bird even find the stash? I recognized the blue-gray feathers, red breast, bold eye stripe and the bossy, brazen attitude.

It gave me a steely look from where it sat on the edge of a

board, defending the peanuts, then grabbed one in its beak and flew off. A couple minutes later, nuthatch returned, repeating the procedure until every gem had been relocated.

I have seen nuthatch working a peanut pile several times since. I have not seen any evidence that anyone else has managed to pilfer even a single goodie, and it has been more than two months since I saw chipmunk in the garden.

This entirely unanticipated result of my roughly devised experiment has steeled my resolve to have chipmunk return. I’ll have to increase my observations, redesign the stash point layout, probably change the location and definitely rework the menu … will that be smooth or crunchy PB? n

classic guacamole recipe made with fresh, colourful and nutrient-dense ingredients that can be enjoyed with corn chips, tacos, or even on salads or sandwiches.

HOMEMADE GUACAMOLE Makes roughly 6 servings.

Ingredients: • 3 avocados (ripe) • 1 tomato • 1/4 cup diced red onion • 2 tbsp lime or lemon juice • 1/4 cup fresh diced cilantro • 1/2 tsp salt • 2-3 garlic cloves Instructions: 1. Cut your avocados in half, take out the pit and squeeze the avocado flesh into a large bowl.

2. Using a fork, mash the avocados up until they are soft and creamy.

3. Dice up your tomato, red onion, garlic and cilantro. Toss in the bowl.

4. Juice your lime into a bowl so that you can Guacamole pick out the seeds, then add roughly 2 tbsp to the bowl with the other ingredients.

5. Add salt to taste.

6. Stir everything up and enjoy!

Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest Winners - Part 2 of 2 The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society extends its congratulations to the winners of the territorywide Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest.

The contest was launched last Spring to help motivate Yukon students to pursue healthier habits, stay hydrated, reduce their impact on the environment and be more engaged in learning to help increase student attendance.

Every Student, Every Day was established in 2012 to help increase student attendance in Yukon schools. Since its creation, the initiative has directly supported over 140 grass-roots, community-developed and led student attendance projects in almost every Yukon community with over $1.2 million.
