When he moved to Whitehorse, Smith was 62 and had just retired from St. Paul’s Hospital. Cathleen had also retired from running the early childhood education program at Douglas College in New Westminster.

The couple settled in Whitehorse with their dog, Jake, and cat, Scrofula. They lived in Valleyview, then in Riverdale. Smith recalls that one winter while trying

n volume three of The Colourful Five Per Cent, Jim Robb devotes page 38 to Dr. Jaime Smith. From 1995 to 2001, Smith was the territory’s only psychiatrist. Although he lived in the Yukon for only six years, Smith and his wife, Cathleen, made the most of their time in the North and he remains a Yukoner at heart.

Earlier this year, Smith published a book called Stardust: memoir and essays by an astronomer who became a psychiatrist.

The memoir, entitled Foxtrot, is a very engaging account of Smith’s life so far, from his childhood in Minnesota; his work as an astronomer in Argentina; his return to the US as a graduate student; his move to the Kootenays to teach astronomy; his time at medical school at the University of B.C.; and his work as a psychiatrist in Vancouver and Whitehorse. The memoir ends with Smith residing in Victoria where he still lives today.

He caught the bus instead.

Smith joined both the Rotary Club and the Legion, so he met folks beyond his medical colleagues. He also met Jim Robb, who is just one month older than Smith. Robb jokingly refers to himself as Smith’s “elder.”

“We get along together as pals,” says Smith of Robb.

I remarked to Smith that in some ways he is similar to Robb.

Both are interested in folks from all walks of life. Smith agrees. He says he was drawn to psychiatry out of a desire to get to know people more deeply.

Smith also got to know the Yukon deeply.

“The whole area of the North was some place I wanted to experience,” he says.

He especially liked to travel by motorcycle. It was by this mode of transport that he went to all the communities.

Smith’s many experiences before he moved to Whitehorse. However, his work with AIDS patients at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver is particularly notable, as are his efforts as a member of the Gay and Lesbian Caucus of the American Psychiatric Association to lobby for the removal of homosexuality from the organization’s diagnostic nomenclature.

Smith and Cathleen went to Old Crow, where Cathleen met Edith Josie and ultimately made a documentary film about the Gwich’in writer best known for her column, Here Are The News.

Due to Cathleen’s health, the Smiths left the Yukon in 2001 for milder climes on Vancouver Island where they would be closer to family. They bought a house in Sydney. Smith built a “Yukon cabin” in the yard, complete with a woodstove and a leaning chimney, just like in a Jim Robb painting. He hung moose antlers that he acquired from Ken Quong over the cabin’s door.

Cathleen passed away in 2011.

She was a remarkable individual who Smith memorializes in Stardust as a “warrior woman.” Smith subsequently moved into an apartment he calls the Bear Cave. He tells me about the Yukon images he has on the walls, including the log highrise in downtown Whitehorse, a view looking over Lake Laberge, the start of the Yukon Quest and his motorcycle on the Alaska Highway. He has a flagpole to fly the Yukon flag on Discovery Day, and the Pride flag on Pride day.

Smith is moving to a seniors’ facility soon. He’ll be packing up his apartment and his Yukon memories, which he’ll take with him to his new home. He says he’s too old to visit the territory again, but he misses it and has many friends here.

“I still think of myself as a Yukoner.” n

GRIP AND GRIPES November can be a gloomy month.

T

hanksgiving and Halloween fun give way to the somber and serious reflection of Remembrance Day, before the work and joy of winter celebrations. For me, November also marks a return of the “gripes”—those small irritations that can negatively affect a person’s mood.

I’m slowly coming to grips with how bad my grip has become.

I was diagnosed with arthritis sometime in my late 20s, but, unlike some things that have gotten better with time, my ability to tolerate my arthritis has not. I drop things easily because my grip is precarious. I lack the dexterity to text easily. It hurts to hold a book for any length of time. I don’t dare hold my IPad without a keyboard tray as it costs too much to get it fixed once the warranty has worn off.

My gripes centre on manufacturers and service providers and designers who don’t seem to realize how difficult they can make life for a person with arthritis.

More than six million Canadians have arthritis as of 2020. Almost half of them are under the age of 65 (StatsCan data excluding the territories).

You would think that some industries would notice. Take smoked oysters, for example— a seasonal treat in our family, but not this year. I’m so tired of wrestling with the stupid little tabs that break off and the lids that won’t respond to a normal can opener. I’m also tired of that

Also on my gripe list are the tiny little foil caps with a tiny little foil tab, for shampoos and creams, etc. I often have to search for a knife or tweezers to try and pull them off—usually resulting in some kind of mess. I waste a lot of salt wrestling with that silly salt box spout, making superstitious offerings to the Roman goddess Vesta by throwing salt over my shoul-

der. I’m thankful that cardboard milk cartons are double-sided, as I often mangle the one side before trying to open the other.

And then there’s the medications, like eye drops. The otherwise-wonderful pharmacy I use tapes an extra prescription label on the teeny little bottle. I’ve poked my eye with the floppy label more than once as I try to squeeze drops from the hard bottle. I now rip the label off but the bottle label comes with it so I have to hope that I remember the

shape of each of the three bottles I need. And why aren’t the bottles themselves easier to squeeze?

Harrumph.

Finally, some applications that I use on my IPad will not change their orientation to landscape.

You either have to read things sideways, or hold the IPad and

keyboard cover awkwardly and precariously. Do these app developers think everyone lives on their phone? Me, I live on my tablet.

Time and space do not permit me to talk about the many issues facing those with arthritis in hips, knees, ankles and back. I will just say that walking should not be a hazardous undertaking, as noted in a recent Supreme Court decision about a woman getting injured navigating a pile of snow on a city sidewalk.

Of course, there are workarounds for many of these gripes.

If you don’t want to bang jars on the countertop, there are tools to help open them that mostly work. Prescription pills can be put into foil packs for those of us who wonder why we need childproof bottles at our advanced age.

There are so many apps it’s easy to find alternatives. The city could actually enforce the requirement for businesses outside the downtown core to clear their adjoining sidewalks and make sure their own sidewalks are passable, as part of being age-friendly. Stores could seek products that are easy to open.

As we near the winter holiday season, maybe friends and family could also give a thought to gifts that are easy for the recipient to open and use. In the meantime, letters and emails to manufacturers sometimes yield results if Santa isn’t on your mailing list, or if you’re not on his good one. n

“Those are real artifacts we brought back and displayed in the business because of their authenticity (they are real antiques that have been used by our ancestors) and it is a good luck charm, as well as reminding us where we are from and our value.”

It seems that the charms are working their magic, because business is booming for Morin and Veniat. But their success is not due to the charms alone—the two entrepreneurs are engaging, talented, and passionate about what they do. And Yukoners are crazy about their crêpes.

The crêperie is a dream come

true for Morin, who has always wanted to open a French restaurant. However, for seven years she lived in Vancouver, where there’s too much competition. Veniat invited her to Whitehorse in 2019.

The two visited Yukonstruct, where Veniat used Cospace. Morin saw potential in the facility’s kitchen, which was vacant at the

time. She even took a picture of it.

“I loved it,” she says of the space.Then COVID-19 hit and the dream was tucked away. Earlier this year, when the friends became aware that Yukonstruct was holding a competition for thescont’d on page 12 ...

Aiming to question conformist human housing choices, Tolton’s idea emerged from the observing an interesting phenomena: “Birdhouses are a man-made home built into the aftermath of ecosystem and habitat destruction resulting from the construction of our own homes ... often created as a miniature fantasy of the owner’s concept of an ideal home,” Tolton said.

“What does a condo mean as a home? What are the practical considerations?” she asks. “I wanted to explore the boundaries of birdhouse and human home, dream and reality”.

Manias drew inspiration from the Yukon River, calling on its intensity to influence their compositions.

“This (Yukon River) felt connected to my own work. … I view myself as a strongly fluid person

and believe that people and other living creatures do not all fit the gender binary constructs that have been popularized in the last few centuries. I believe it is our fluidity and dynamism that gives us our true creative potential,” Manias says.

“The body is not the focus, or used in an exploitative manner, as often happens with individuals who are seen as ‘other’ in popular western art history,” they say.

“It is a unique concept, not so commercially friendly... I would encourage the public to keep an open mind about what traditional portrait should be, and how we base our first impressions on appearance.”

Roberts tackled both fire and air in her stained glass work. Roberts, who started stained glass and mosaics work ten years ago, is primarily self-taught, and took her time at the residency as an opportunity to develop her skills.

Connecting Back to the River: The Chu Niikwän Artist Residency is back at Arts Underground in Whitehorse

orn in 2018 from a collaboration between the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, the Yukon Arts Centre and Arts undergrounds, the Chu Niikwän (meaning the Yukon River in Southern Tutchone) Artist Residency selects three visual artists and provide them with a space to work over three weeks. Supported by curators Teresa Vander MeerChassé and Heather LeDuc, the nominated artists created several new pieces. After months of work, three artists--Rebecca Manias, Kim Roberts and Sheelah Tolton--

are exhibiting the fruits of their residencies, a show entitled Elemental Transformations.

For this edition of the residency, the curators chose not to provide a specific theme, but rather to allow the artists the freedom to work on whatever moved them.

“For Heather and I, it was very important to let the artists guide the residency. When you have freedom, your art can go in any directions. You can show your passion in your work, try new techniques and propose projects of your own interest,” explains Vander Meer-Chassé.

“All artists are working with the four elements and a social awareness aspect,” observes LeDuc, a choice which came about organically as part of the residency.

icrowave your squash. Roasting it can take forever. While this yields a super sweet, flavorful result, sometimes you just want to get it cooked and on the table. Change up the spices in these fritters as well. Garam masala would be delicious, or even some freshly grated ginger and garlic. Serves 4

Microwave the squash by cutting it in half and scooping out all the seeds.

Poke the flesh of the squash with a knife or fork, but be careful to not puncture it all the way through. Season with salt and pepper, then add ¼ cup of water to the centre of the squash. Wrap in plastic wrap and microwave on high for 5 to 8 minutes, depending on size of squash. Let the squash rest for 10 minutes before removing the plastic.

In a bowl, combine eggs, flour, sour cream and turmeric. Whisk until smooth.

Heat a large drizzle of vegetable oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the batter to the hot oil by the tablespoon and cook until browned. Repeat with all the batter and serve with sour cream and chili flakes.

pace, they went to work to make the kitchen their own. They went through several rounds of competition and concept development until the selection committee chose their crêperie.

The decision to move to Whitehorse to follow her passion and open a restaurant didn’t come without some loss for Morin, whose partner still lives in Vancouver.

“I sacrificed my relationship because it was a dream,” she says. “This is my passion. I don’t

want to say one day ‘Why didn’t I do this?’ I didn’t want to have a regret. So I said ‘Yes. I have this opportunity, I will go to Whitehorse.’”

So was it worth it?

“A lot of people have been very kind,” Morin says. “They give me love.”

“It’s been so good, we’ve been so lucky,” Veniat says. “People have been super excited about the concept. Like the first week of opening we wanted to do a

soft launch so we didn’t speak too much about it ‘cause we wanted to make sure everything was ready and we were stressed and we were setting up. And day one there was a line. That was amazing. We felt so appreciated and so loved and day two? Giant line this way and it’s been that way since. It’s super successful. People are super kind.

People come back too.”

Of the two La Petite Maison co-owners, Morin is the most passionate about cooking. But making

crêpes the right way isn’t easy.

Morin went to Paris to learn how to do it authentically. She tells me how on the first day, she had jet lag and her initial attempts were a flop. But the next day she rallied and made the best crêpes in the class.

Then she came back to Whitehorse and taught Veniat, who shares cooking duties. She also takes care of the logistical side of the business, like ordering organic buckwheat flour from Quebec.

everyone, from strict vegans to gluten-free folks. The savoury crêpes, for example, are vegan and made from guaranteed gluten-free buckwheat. There are vegan cheese, sausage and butter options as well. Substitutions are happily provided at no extra cost.

The menu is extensive, with so many savoury and sweet options, you could eat there every day for a few weeks and not have the same crêpe twice. Specials are changed every week. Sometimes the toppings are not so much French as fusion. For example, at Thanksgiving the crêpes included turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.

Morin and Veniat try to use as many local products as possible, serving coffee from Firebean Coffee Roasters. They’ve bought apples to support school kids’ fundraising efforts. Their carrot cake is made from Yukon carrots.

“All people talk about the carrot cake,” Morin says. “Maybe better than the crêpe.”

The kitchen is open so people can sit at the counter and watch while Morin and Veniat, donning chef hats, put on a bit of a show while they cook. And while learning to make crêpes is hard, now that Morin and Veniat have mastered the technique, they can whip one up in a minute, maybe a bit more, depending on the top-

ping.

“Speedy Gonzalez,” Morin says in regards to her crêpe production.

And they have to go fast if they want to keep up with demand.

When I visit, they have a Friday catering job for 200 crêpes on top of their regular business.

As far as diners go, they have repeat customers who come every week. There are folks of all ages. Sometimes they host groups of elders.

“It’s really nice because they have so many stories to share,” says Veniat.

Morin and Veniat also tell me about a teenager who had a birthday celebration with friends at the crêperie, which delighted the owners. They remark how much it means “when you have a teenager telling you that it’s ‘the best thing ever.’”

They even amuse morning commuters who are driving by as the crêperie opens.

“Every day when we put out our sign to say we’re open, we put on our hats and people driving by are laughing at us,” Veniat says.

The truth is, Morin and Veniat enjoy creating happiness as much as they love making crêpes. And for all the love they put into their cooking, their customers give back by loving them and the crêperie in return. And La Petite Maison owners truly appreciate their customers.

Trail crew clearing the Cottonwood Trail I have witnessed the land shake off its summer greens for the riot of fall’s oranges, yellows and reds, and the snow line on the St. Elias Mountains has been creeping steadily lower. The chatter on the radio has proven park staff and their work are no less vibrant and diverse.

The Visitor Experience team are incredibly well-informed as they share detailed answers for the many questions from park visitors participating in guided hikes and tours and registering for backcountry trips.

Welcome to Kluane National Park and Reserve

I

n my life so far I have had 21 first days of school and probably a dozen first days at new jobs. Each time I’ve been full of anticipation, excitement, nerves, and have been driven by curiosity about what I was about to learn.

My first day as a Parks Canada Public Outreach Education Officer in Kluane National Park and Reserve

(NPR) felt similar, but turned to the max because, not only was I the new kid in the park, but I’d just moved 2,000 kilometres north, alone, for a four-year term in a little place called Haines Junction.

My first week passed by in the usual flurry of orientation, IT issues, new faces and names, and moving into my own office space.

On week two however, I was handed a park radio. It was then I finally started to understand just how much goes on inside Kluane NPR. The Kluane region is, without a doubt, a place of extremes. So far

They’re out on the water taking samples, in the air identifying key areas for management, or on the ground analyzing mountains of data. While out helping with kokanee salmon carcass sampling, the radio was abuzz with discussion of how best to move the land-based team upstream with the least disturbance to a grizzly bear feasting on spawning salmon nearby. No two days are ever the same for any team in Kluane NPR, but respect and care towards the creatures and landscape of Kluane are clearly shown by everyone.

As the busy field season has come to a close, the radios have gone quiet. Summer students and seasonal team members have moved back to their classrooms and winter work, and Trail Crew and Resource Conservation teams are getting ready for winter and their office-based data analysis.

For me, I’m eager to dive into my role; the coming winter will be full of learning, engaging with the community, and preparing programming for next year. I’ll be waiting though, for the return of

COMMUNITY Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship Program Deadline As part of the Comprehensive Cooperation and Benefits Agreement (CBA), signed by Victoria Gold and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND) in October 2011, a scholarship program was established in 2012 and is mutually implemented to help support FNNND citizens attending full-time university, college or trades and technical courses.

This initiative, the Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship Program, accepts applications twice a year; in August for the Fall school semester and in November for the Winter school semester.

The upcoming scholarship program application deadline is November 26, 2021 and scholarship awards will be provided in January 2022.

First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun citizen Robert Hoogland received a Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship earlier this Fall to pursue post-secondary studies.

The next Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship Program deadline is November 26, 2021 and will be awarded in January 2022. Program details can be found at vgcx.com/community

Robert Hoogland received a Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship earlier this Fall as he pursues his Home Inspector Certificate at the Carson Dunlop School of Home Inspection.

“The Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship has provided me with an opportunity to pursue my future goals and with the support, I was able to invest in equipment used for home inspection,” says Robert. “My plans include getting certified as a home inspector and becoming an entrepreneur, as most home inspectors own their own business or have become self-employed.”

Since its creation, the Victoria Gold/NND CBA Scholarship Program has provided over 125 scholarships to FNNND citizens for a total disbursement over $120,000.

“Education and training are important aspects to achieve your goals and dreams for success,” continues Robert.
