Ted Tullis’s fantastic steam machine

I

’m at Ted Tullis’s house in Porter Creek to talk about a steam engine he built. As I flip through several envelopes of photos on a coffee table, I’m distracted by images of a pink and purple airplane. Tullis tells me that he built it. “You built an airplane?” “Yeah, I’m afraid so,” he says. I tell him I like the colour. He seems surprised. “Most people thought it was a goofy colour.” Tullis likes to build things.

During the interview I learn, not only about the airplane and the steam engine, but also a Ford Model T. His affinity with engines is not surprising, as he was a heavy duty mechanic by trade. The airplane, the steam locomotive and the vintage car were what occupied him for the last 30 years. He is now 83 years old. Tullis moved to the Yukon in 1969. As a mechanic, he worked on the heavy equipment used in road construction. He has an image of a crew he worked with on the Dempster Highway construction in 1978. He also placer-mined for a few decades. Many of his photos are of mining areas near Carmacks

– Mount Nansen and Freegold Mountain. He owned all the big equipment in the photos, he tells me. He seems by nature to be drawn to vehicles of all sorts. This affinity appears to be the best explanation for why his vocation and his hobbies were both related to engines. When I ask why he made a steam locomotive, any definitive purpose evades him. “Well … I don’t know, I don’t know,” he says. “Like, they’ve got clubs down in all the western states and eastern states and in Vancouver and just out of Victoria somewhere. old geezers do. They build a locomotive and they run it around on their tracks. I’ve been at the one on Burnaby Mountain. They’ve got a park there. I just always wanted to.” He later adds that building a live steam locomotive and building an airplane were two things he wanted to do when he was young. Tullis no longer has the plane, but both the steam engine and the Model T are stored in outbuildings on his property. Tullis ordered castings and built the steam engine to spec according to blueprints. The

Ted Tullis standing in front of the snowblower

PHOTOS: Heather LeDuc “I’ve been so damn busy,” he says. Tullis also shows me the restored Model T, which has wooden side panels painted green. He says he built it from parts that came out of “a dozen junk piles scattered across Canada.” It took about 60 years to gather together all the pieces. The final piece of machinery we talk about is a snowblower in his yard. It’s bright red, and has a cab that Tullis built. He doesn’t plan on starting any new projects, he says he’s too old. But he would like to get the engine put back together one more time. Once he does, I hope to go back and see it under steam. n outbuilding where the steam engine is stored also houses the machine Tullis used to lathe the parts, as well as the drawings. “Those are just bare castings,” he explains. “Everything has to be machined on it.” The engine itself rests on a table about waist height. It’s not as big as I expected it would be, but it’s large enough that a person could sit on it, with a seat similar

$ EACH PLUS TAX

to a riding lawn mower. The locomotive is in a few pieces. But Tullis has photographs from 2013 when it was fully assembled. It’s the one time that he had the engine “fired up” or, to use the correct terminology, “under steam.” Shortly afterwards, Tullis had found that the engine needed more work and he took it apart. He hasn’t had time to put it back together.

MISFITS VERSUS CITY HALL

Continued from last week’s issue of What’s Up Yukon. Part 1 and 2 available online

T

he next morning, about a third of the population were greeted with two options: stay home or get some unexpected exercise. The telephones at town hall were definitely getting a workout. The dispatchers were earning their money, dealing with customers

who were not amused. Our message was delivered loud and clear with an enormous amount of discipline. The town was obviously getting legal advice, and waiting to see if we had staying power. Before we knew it, our first day was in the books. All four companies agreed everything went better than expected. By the second day, we started to fall into a routine. The four different taxis would park together and talk for awhile, a few times per shift. We were no longer competitors, we were working as a team. We could only park for a short time, because it would have been

awkward if a customer had come along and tried to hire one of us. Our goal was to stay visible, but away from potential customers. We put a lot of effort into making sure we didn’t irritate our customers. Long before Walmart started using the slogan we understood, “Who’s number one? The customer.” It wasn’t until the second evening that I experienced the first hiccup. I was riding shotgun with a different driver than the night before. He informed me that he was going to visit a friend at a party. I decided to go into the party with him. Being a total

PART 3

abstainer, I looked like a stick in the mud very quickly. This party was the full meal deal, they seemed to have almost as much booze as the liquor store, and there was enough weird smoke from weird tabacky to almost set off the smoke detector. I stuck it out for well over an hour, then I went looking for my partner. I found Buddy in the next room and I could see immediately that he had taken advantage of the full meal deal. He was completely pickled. I don’t think he knew me, or where he was. I called Buddy’s dispatcher and told her to fire up another taxi and send someone over to pick me up. I rode shotgun for a few more hours with another driver, and then we called it a day. Day two was over. We had no professional knowledge to measure if our action had been effective. We only had a blind belief we would win. Around mid-morning on the third day, we started to hear

through the grapevine that there was some progress with the town. A few hours later, we got the news. After sixty plus hours, the town all of a sudden came to the conclusion that a dollar minimum was reasonable. Contrary to the old adage “You can’t fight City Hall,” we had - and we’d won. It’s a funny thing being young: we came to the conclusion, “Well that wasn’t so difficult.” Within three days we had long forgotten what we pulled off and never talked about it again. We never realized if we had made a few mistakes, it would have turned into bitter disappointment. From the view of the twenty-first century, getting a twenty five cent raise sounds like peanuts. The fact is we received a thirty three percent raise in pay- show me a union negotiator that wouldn’t kill for results like that. Bottom line is, a bunch of misfits had accidentally done a lot of things right. n

Folks from Whistle Bend Place pose with the Quilt of Valour

A tall tribute

J

oseph Novak is a World War ll veteran and possibly the last in the Yukon who served overseas. Joe moved into Whistle Bend Place early this year and has delighted co-residents and staff with his passionate storytelling, unshakable love of music and gratitude for life. In October of last year, Joe was given a 7x7-foot Quilt of Valour in acknowledgment

and appreciation for his service. The quilt is immaculately stitched together with patches of detailed poppy flowers and leaves. It was made by quilter extraordinaire Lee Hugh. Joe has been striving to have this piece displayed in a public location since he first received it. “I want as many people to see it as possible,” he said. “I want them to remember those who fought in the war, those who never came home.” Joe’s dream was to have the quilt displayed in the Whitehorse

General Hospital or a government building, but soon after he moved into Whistle Bend Place, the idea of putting it up there became more and more attractive. Once the ball started rolling, it never stopped. Cynthia Onions, supervisor of recreation and psychosocial services, walked with Joe around the building to scope out where the quilt could go. They found the perfect spot. Soon after, lift equipment was rented to reach the high and mighty chosen location. On April 7, 2021, Todd, facility

maintenance, secured himself to the scissor lift and blasted off to install the quilt while Joe kept a proud watch. “It’s perfect,” he said. “You did a terrific job and I couldn’t be happier.” Thank you Joe, for sharing this very special gift with everyone who lives, works and visits Whistle Bend Place. We hope everyone will look at it and be reminded of their freedom, due to the sacrifices made by those who served in war. n

STEPPING OUT!

SAM MCGEE HIKE FROM CONRAD

Clear views of Tagish Lake

If you’re looking for an adventure day hike with rewarding views at top, look no further than the Sam McGee trail.

T

his trail goes from roadside to alpine following the tram line of a silver mine from the early 1900s. To find the trailhead from Whitehorse, take the South Klondike Highway towards Fraser. Past Carcross, keep your eyes open for the Conrad Campground sign. Just after the campground there is a gravel road on the left side

of the highway before the road bends right. You can on this gravel pit road. From the makeshift parking lot, walk back to the highway and cross the road into the ditch on the other side. Follow the bottom of the ditch to the right and you will soon see a trailhead sign on your left going into the trees. The Trailhead sign says Mountain Hero

– this is a bike trail that goes all the way over Montana Mountain and can also be accessed up Montana Mountain Road in Carcross as well. The trail is well-trodden and easy to follow. Your hike begins winding through the forest alongside the old mining tram line, the first structure of which you will walk under while still in

the trees. There are a few spots later on where the trail splits but the main trail is fairly obvious thwhole way. As you continue up, the trail incline increases, but it is solid footing. As long as you are moving your feet, you are making progress. cont’d on page 13 ...

Meet Brutus!

Brutus is a 1-year-old, male, American Staffordshire Terrier, young and full of energy! He is affectionate and feels that he needs to be close to people, in addition, he loves giving kisses, he does not know the meaning of personal space and he doesn’t understand how strong and heavy he can be (lol). Brutus is a heavy medium-sized, shorthaired dog and he will also need an experienced family that has time and patience to train, exercise and work to let him know that it is okay to be alone from time to time. He will do well with older children, with another female dog, but not with male dogs or any cats. If you are interested in adopting Brutus, please fill out an online application below. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him.

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5

NOSE TO TAIL

Don’t overlook the offal when meal-planning this winter

O

ffal—literally “off-fall”— refers to those parts of an animal carcass that have fallen off during butchering. While muscles represent more than a third of the weight of cattle, by-products including side meats, bones, skin, and intestines constitute most of the animal body. The brain, the trotters (aka feet), kidney, liver, sweetbreads (pancreas) and tripe (stomach) often end up in the bin in most western cities these days. That’s not always been the case though. In the distant past, bone marrow and offal were seemingly eaten raw, smoked or dried. Made of sheep’s stomach stuffed with a boiled mix of liver, heart, lungs and rolled oats, traditional Scottish haggis is another example of how these meats use to be treated. In France and Italy, consumption of various mammals’ organs is still widespread. Typically cooked in the countryside and brought

to light by chefs in cities all over the world, you might have heard of pâté, foie gras, boudin (blood sausage), trippa or vastedda (boiled spleen cooked in lard). In Africa, part of South America and most of Asia, those trimmings are also very commonly considered affordable and nutritious protein meals. To bring this tradition back to life in North America, some agrarians are re-appreciating these meats. Barbara and Bill Drury at Circle D Ranch offer an example of sustainable meat production and nose to tail eating. This fall, the couple is butchering their five pigs and 15 of the 30 Angus cows they keep on 300 acres north of Whitehorse. “When taking the life of an animal, we need to show them respect and one of the ways is utilising as much of the carcass as possible,” says Barbara Drury. For the last 40 years, the farmer has prepared bone broth for her family and customers. “Many of the nutrients from the beef and pig bones are very good for us—our digestive system, aching joints, bones or teeth—in a form that our body can assimilate.” This year, the farmers at Circle D will save the tripe, heads and

red offal, in addition to the bones, to make a range of products. Cleaned in the clear water from their creek, the cow stomachs will be slowly cooked with the carrots and parsley of their garden and transferred into jars for the cold winter. The pig and cow heads will be turned into pâté, marinated with brandy and haskaps.

1. Cut the stomachs into 1 to 2-inch square pieces. 2. Add the stomachs to a pot. Blanch for 4 minutes and rinse them into cold water. 3. Combine all the ingredients into a pot and cover with water if there is not enough liquid.

4. Let it simmer slowly for 8 to 10 hours. 5. If necessary, season with more pepper and salt before serving it hot by itself or with boiled potatoes. The ingredients and products can be found at the Circle D Ranch on the Alaska Highway. For more information and advice, please contact Barbara and Bill by email: strangerintheland@hotmail.com n

TRIPES STEW À LA MODE DE CAEN This is a traditional meal from the west part of France. The four stomachs of a ruminant (i.e. cow, sheep, goat, elk) are high in proteins, vitamins and minerals such as iron, copper and zinc. Add a slice (or more) of liver for extra iron. As part of a diversified diet, tripes make a nutritious stew for the winter. Ingredients: • 2 kg of beef stomach (cleaned rumen, reticulum or honeycomb, omasum and/or abomasum) • A slice of liver (or more) optional • 2 cups of carrots in small pieces • 2 cups of onions cut into quarters • 3 cloves of garlic • Thyme, bay leaves and parsley to taste

Sam McGee hike from Conrad ... cont’d from page 13

More tram towers and buckets in the alpine, not all are intact up you get as the ridges of the mountain begin to block some of the view. If you’re feeling ambitious, as mentioned before, you can stay on the Mountain Hero trail as it does continue along the mountain top, eventually leading you through the alpine to the other side of Montana Mountain. Please note this trail doesn’t loop, it’s one side to the other, so if you do want to hike across you may want to leave a vehicle on the other side, or you’ll be staring down a long walk back. Overall, the trail is totally worth it – stunning views, good workout without feeling intimidating (no rock climbing or shale to scramble over) and it’s doable year-round. Though, we learned the hard way last winter that you will definitely want snowshoes for the last bit up to the alpine in the winter months. Happy trails! n
