The Guild brings a new play to town for its first show this year

I

n selecting the Guild Society’s first play of the 2021 theatre season, artistic director Brian Fidler sought help from Calgarybased director Clare Preuss. He had a few criteria in mind. He was looking for something that could cross into the queer community, was relatively new, and had a lot of joy in it.

Preuss responded by sending Fidler five plays for his consideration. He chose Canadian playwright Christopher Duthie’s A Dinner Party.

“This one really jumped out for me,” Fidler says.

Preuss shares Fidler’s sentiment. She saw A Dinner Party when it premiered in Calgary in 2019 and immediately wanted to direct it. She feels like Yukoners will make the perfect audience for what will only be the second production of the play.

“I love Whitehorse audiences, from what I’ve experienced, because there’s an eagerness and also an openness to absurdity that I find really fun and this play gets really weird,” Preuss says. “It’s very relatable, but then it really tilts in the most fun ways, but still always speaking to the human condition.”

Both Fidler and Preuss remark on a sudden twist the play takes, when the reality of a mundane dinner party is shattered and things rapidly go sideways. Neither wants to give too much away, but they use the same adjectives:

playful, super funny and, most of all, absurd.

The playwright responsible for the absurd turn, Christopher Duthie, wrote the play as his thesis for a Master of Fine Arts from Guelph University. He said that he had a dream with a scene involving “anxiety dreams,” and this planted the seed for what would become A Dinner Party.

“It felt like a very intuitive process of just following that one scene that I woke up with in my head,” Duthie says. “It was a very pleasurable thing to write just for myself because it felt in some ways that it wrote itself.”

“I have a deeply entrenched love for the absurd that comes from my family—my mom and dad and my sister,” he says. “What I

Meanwhile, back in Whitehorse, Preuss says there are challenges to directing Duthie’s absurdist vison. However, Preuss says they are part of what makes the play so fun because they are “challenges of creating effective hijinks.”

“There’s some magic-making for sure,” she says.

Among those making the magic with Preuss are four actors: Andrea Bols, Heidi J. Loos, Jessica Westman and Erica Ward.

“They’re all so funny,” Preuss says of the actors. “They all have awesome comedic timing.”

At the same time, Preuss says that the actors need to keep the play grounded in emotional truth so audiences can still relate. We

need to believe the relationships between the characters, which in the case of this production are all queer. Duthie wrote the play so that it would work with characters of any gender.

“I felt really strongly that I didn’t want the play to be about two straight couples,” Duthie says.

“I really wanted to have diverse depictions of love and romance on stage. That’s more reflective of the social circles I travel in. I

needed to put a check on my own hetero-normative perspective … I was excited about imagining the different versions of the play.”

Unfortunately, Duthie won’t be able to leave Calgary to see the Guild’s production of A Dinner Party. He is excited that it’s being produced here, though. And Preuss is excited to be directing it.

Some COVID-19 restrictions still apply for the production. Seating is limited, with folks sitting at small tables in their pods. Fidler isn’t sure if the bar will be open; they’re playing it by ear for now.

Whether or not the bar is open, the production offers Yukoners a chance to experience live theatre again. A Dinner Party is a good fit for the times, according to Fidler, as it deals with a reunion of friends who haven’t seen each other in a while. It’s also a wonderful play to program at this time

of year, Preuss says, when we’re returning to theatre.

“It will be a fun adventure,” she promises. “It’ll be a good time.” n

We had no idea what we had stumbled upon. The town was going to find out very quickly how vulnerable they were. It was hard for private people to own a vehicle in highway-less Inuvik. Less than 10 per cent of the population had one, so it was difficult to bum a ride. Transportation to the airport, which was eight miles away, was a headache without taxis.

After we got the good citizens safely delivered to the local watering holes so they could guzzle down their favorite hooch, our action started at around 8:00 PM. Right from the start, Mother Nature became a partisan and turned the thermostat down a few degrees. I took the first shift for our company with my shotgun in tow. Over the course of the action, I would do a shift in my car and then I would do a shift riding shotgun with one of our counterparts. Every taxi was out of service, with the exception of seventy five year-old Bruno, who had a radio-less car. The old man did his thing and was more of a safety valve than a threat to us.

On a lot of occasions, even a full complement of taxis could not prevent fights over taxis when the Zoo (Mackenzie Hotel) closed.

Night after night between fares, we tried to figure out how to put a system in place that all of the companies could trust. The first decision made was to eliminate the bad blood between the companies. Stan approached the other owners and they came to a decision that all negotiations between the companies would go back and forth, through a secondary person in each company. I was the secondary person for Stan. In a couple of days, we had the details of the scheme worked out.

The scheme was simple: two sets of companies would pair off and each company would supply one car 24 hours a day, with the other company’s driver riding along keeping watch (shotgun).

Each company kept dispatching around the clock. When the calls came in, the customers were told, “We’re busy.” The four owners agreed to be by the phone night and day in case there was a problem that needed to be ironed out.

Thinking back on it today, I can remember how clueless we were.

Jim Robb is still coming up with new ideas

I

t’s pretty much impossible to imagine what our understanding of Yukon’s history would have been if not for Jim Robb.

How colourless might our view of post-war Yukon be, without characters like “Wigwam” Harry Fleck, Andy Hooper and James D. Richards, AKA Buzz Saw Jimmy?

Jim Robb turns 88 this year.

For 66 of those years, he’s lived in the Yukon. He worked a few jobs until one day in 1957. Someone put a quarter in a jukebox at the White Pass Hotel restaurant called The Grill. Wigwam Harry “came out of nowhere” and started to dance. That’s what “sparked” Jim Robb to begin his decades-long project to capture “the Yukon’s greatest treasure: her colourful characters and exceptionally fine people.”

In other words, what we all know as “the Colourful Five Per Cent.” A lot of these folks are from a bygone era, and many of them dwelled in Whitehorse’s squatter areas—Whisky Flats, Moccasin Flats, Sleepy Hollow.

Just as he loves to capture the people, Robb has recreated these vanished neighbourhoods over and over again.

How does one qualify to be part of the Colourful Five Per Cent? The word Robb uses most to describe these rare humans is “interesting.” They march to the beat of their own drummer.

I speculate that, as time goes by, there must be a smaller pool to draw from. Robb agrees, but also assures me that he’s still finding subjects.

“There’s always up and coming interesting people,” he says.

“A lot of them now are wearing metal in their mouths and tattoos on their behinds,” he says, laughing. Over the years, Robb has portrayed dozens of people, using charcoal on moose skin and watercolour on paper. Robb is also a prolific photographer.

He would take his $12 camera to Whisky Flats to document the lives there. He preferred black and white photography, and his portraits are especially strong.

“I seem to know how to take people pictures,” he says, “Maybe because I know the subject pretty well.”

Jim Robb is, above else, interested in all kinds of people and their stories. He’s documented individuals that others might overlook.

“I love the people,” Robb says.

“The thing is, we’ve got some really wonderful people [who] the average person wouldn’t really figure out. Like, I talk to everybody. I don’t care if they’re on the street broke or in bad shape… Some of their faces tell a story, that’s one of the reasons I take a lot of people pictures.

You’ll see it in my work.”

Robb’s buildings have almost as much character as his people.

He continues to pay tribute to the squatter areas, of which there are just a few remnants left on the Whitehorse waterfront. His famous artistic style, dubbed the “exaggerated truth,” features lopsided structures with bentover stovepipes, and was derived from leaning buildings in Dawson.

describe the ramshackle squatter cabins of the past.

This term does not apply to contemporary Whitehorse architecture, which Robb seldom portrays. However, in a recent work called “From Outhouses to Condos,” Robb compares the romance of past housing versus the metal dwellings of the present.

Pale, multi-level condos linger listlessly behind rustic, animated wooden cabins, a log skyscraper, clotheslines and outhouses.

When I ask Robb what he’s proud of, he doesn’t respond with his 2003 Order of Canada, as I expect. Instead he says he is proud of this recent work, “From Outhouses to Condos.”

This suggests that Robb is not resting on his laurels, but rather is looking ahead and exploring new techniques and new materials.

Many years ago, Robb had the original idea to draw portraits with charcoal on moose skin which were stretched on snowshoes for him by Harry and Annie Silverfox and their son, Billy.

These days, he’s experimenting with watercolours on wood with great success. He found large cross-sections of wood from Rustic North in Marwell and is now using them as a painting surface.

He shows me a piece called “Blueberry Hill, Whisky Flats.”

The knots, natural colours and rings in the wood serve as the perfect background for Robb’s meandering cabins. He says the piece is destined for a local bar.

This is fitting, since Robb’s earliest commissions involved painting murals and drawings for bars including the Taku Hotel and the Rainbow Lounge in the Whitehorse Inn. Another recent exploration for Robb is using vintage doors to frame his prints. He shows me an example hanging in the Ravens Inn’s Railwork Lounge. The print is a collaborative work he did with Chris Caldwell. It features the inside of an old cabin on El Dorado Creek. Robb painted the piece based on an actual cabin.

CORN PORRIDGE WITH FRIED TINNED LUNCH MEAT AND JALAPENOS

T

his porridge can be topped with anything to make a lighter or heavier meal. Leftover pulled pork? Perfect.

Fried egg? Absolutely. Melty cheese? Heck yes. Wilted greens? Get at it. Fried tinned meat makes for a lovely, salty, crispy, meaty treat which is nicely cut by some pickled jalapenos, but definitely try out whatever

you’ve got in your fridge and pantry. Serves 4

Bring water and butter to a boil in a pot over high heat. Add the chicken bouillon powder, then add all the cornmeal at once, whisking constantly.

Once porridge has thickened, add the evaporated milk and corn kernels.

Stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Keep warm while you fry the tinned meat.

Heat oil in a cast-iron skillet over high heat until it shimmers. Add the cubed, tinned meat and cook, tossing often until browned on all sides.

Remove from the pan and set aside.

Place a scoop of porridge in the middle of a bowl, then top with fried meat and chopped jalapenos.

Another memorable collaboration that Robb was involved in is the book Their Own Yukon, a compilation of images collected from numerous Indigenous individuals, from Robb himself, and other sources. Robb worked with anthropologist, Julie Cruikshank, to produce the publication, which was reprinted a few years ago.

“We hitchhiked all over the Yukon,” Robb says. “She [Cruikshank] didn’t know anyone, so I introduced her to elders and stuff. She became great friends with people like that. Angela Sidney and people like that.

“I keep in touch with her, she’s a great lady. First Nations really loved her.”When I remark to Robb that he is probably one of the Yukon’s most popular artists, he shrugs it off. He mentions other artists whose work he admires and collects, including Ray Ladue, Halin de Repentigny and Nathalie Parenteau.

Still, I insist, his work is wellknown and loved by several generations of Yukoners. He admits that some younger people seek selfies with him.

“I have young people coming [saying] ‘Can I get my picture with you?’” Robb says, amused.

“I say to myself ‘What the hell?’

They like what I do I guess.”

I also mention a CBC story about a young woman who has a Jim Robb work tattooed on her back.

“I don’t push that kind of thing, but it’s a walking advertisement,” he responds, laughing.

Thanks to his popularity, Robb has never had to promote himself. This gives him more time to make daily rounds of cafés and bars, to work on his art, and to add to his collection of artifacts.

He’s amassed quite a number of items over the years and places great value in the collection.

He also sees great promise in the work of other Yukon visual and film artists, who give him hope for the future.

“We have a wonderful creative community,” he says.

Robb has been a part of that community for over six decades.

His unwavering commitment to the Colourful Five Per Cent and his familiar, quirky artistic style have won him fans of all ages.

Just like the “colourful characters and exceptionally fine individuals” he pays tribute to, Jim Robb is a beloved territorial treasure.

This book begins with him still mourning after having come up 300 miles short of a finish.

The current story takes us through the decisions that led Hank to try to run the Yukon Quest, which he and Tanya seem to feel is the harder of the two races. This was in 2011.

The journey begins with the selection of the team, and so chapters two and three contain doggie bios of his potential racers and take us through some of the training before the shorter early winter races that Hank uses to make his final selection.

Following that, it’s off on the 5,000-kilometre cross-country journey to Whitehorse, where the

race began that year, and the lastminute busyness of getting ready to hit the trail.

The remaining nine chapters are a travelogue of the race, with engaging vignettes from Braeburn, Carmacks, McCabe Creek, Dawson City and on along the trail.

Some time before Fortymile, in near whiteout conditions, Hank experienced a sort of vision that seemed to augur well for him finishing the race, but he felt odd about it.

“Some of my First Nations friends ask me why I question what I saw, because they don’t. I had a dream about Lazer leading us through a storm; then he was in the video at the start of the banquet; then he was on the trail; maybe I don’t need to question the vision any more than that.”

Lazer, an older dog, was not one of those on that year’s Yukon Quest team.

Hank would go on to finish last and collect the Red Lantern in spite of missing the closing banquet. “… some of the other mushers, vets, volunteers, and fans had come from the banquet to cheer us across the finish line. It

In spite of having done better at this race than at the Iditarod, Hank records that he was bitter for a while. But it turned out the publicity allowed him to develop a side career as a motivational speaker, applying the lessons learned mushing to ideas about team leadership. The epilogue of the book deals with some of these experiences, and before that there’s a four page glossary of mushing terms.

The book ends with a sort of dedication to Lily, one of his oldest and most faithful dogs, who finally retired at the age of 11 after teaching all the kids how the job should be done. Having finished the training, she took the

decision to stay behind, out of Hank’s hands, by refusing to leave her kennel when they were getting ready to leave for Alaska for another try at the Iditarod.

After Hank and the team were gone, “Tanya … went to Lilly’s box and opened it and Lily jumped right out and was bouncing around like a puppy.” Thus proving that it was her decision.

Hank would go on to run the Iditarod successfully and actually take home some prize money in 2012. A second Yukon Quest run in 2016 had him dropping out when too many of his dogs had to be left behind. Down to nine dogs, he scratched in Eagle.

From the hints in the text we can expect to read more about those races in subsequent volumes. Should be interesting. n

“M

r. Spock,” my 1998 camper van, is pure luxury. My old arthritic bones will no longer take sleeping on the cold, hard ground, even with a foam mattress. I managed eight trips totalling about 3,300 kilometres to nine campgrounds on Yukon and Atlin roads in the last six months. There were many more I would have loved to travel to, but it was definitely a full summer.

It’s the most camping I’ve done, either solo, or with my woman friends. The advantage to camping with friends is that we shared in meal preparations and had communal meals depending on our individual schedules—some being early risers for coffee and others sleeping in, or napping during the day. We took reading, writing and art materials for times when we felt inspired, or if it was rainy. I learned how to play cribbage and I even managed to win one game, although I suspect my friend may have given me a few extra points while scoring. I went on solo retreats, or with a group at Braeburn camp to write and read. I felt replenished after those outings.

My husband provided the maintenance support before and after, filling the tank with fresh water and emptying the septic, chopping kindling and checking to make sure all mechanical systems were operating properly. After an initial refresher from him on setup and takedown of the camper, I felt confident to handle all the systems. My husband chose to stay home and do his projects around the yard or have his own retreats at home without a “honey, please

I had not until I met a real one at the park. She was an expert and opened up the world of lichens and their beautiful colours and delicate lacey designs. There are many activities still to explore at other campgrounds. There are recreation sites and opportunities to learn about wildflowers, medicinal plants, birds, beavers, ber-

ries and bushcraft. I have already started a list of places to visit next year.

In my camping travels, I did a bit of informal research on agefriendly campground features in Yukon. By age-friendly, I mean outdoor spaces that are safe and comfortable for oldsters like me who may have limits on sight, mobility, physical strength and hearing. One of the features that I think is ingenious are the campcont’d on page 21 ...

Age-friendly oudoors ... cont’d from page 19 itations, but we found that once we explored the other trails, we weren’t sure where we were. A few additional signposts would have assisted us in easily finding our way back to the campground.

I felt very fortunate to be able to access the outdoors during the last six months. Now I will take on the challenge of the next six months. Hopefully Yukon communities will consider age-friendly measures to ensure walkable and accessible trails and sidewalks so that we can remain active outdoors in the winter. Clearing of snow, ice free and well-lit pathways, accessible public washrooms and benches in public outdoor meeting spaces (e.g. around the Totem pole at the end of Main Street), would make our communities safer and healthier for elders and older adults. Hopefully these are points for newly elected mayors, councillors and politicians to keep in mind in the planning ahead. n

sites with adjustable cooking grills over the firepit. In many campgrounds, those sites are designated for people with mobility limitations, but we did try out one of them. It was perfect, not only for those of us with arthritic backs but also just for ease of adjusting the heat for cooking.

Another feature I saw at the Wolf Creek campground was a rubber mat with large mesh/grid design that kept the gravel in the camping spot packed down for ease of mobility for people with walkers or wheelchairs. In all campgrounds, there were outdoor toilets with ramps, but in some cases the ramps had a small lip which could cause tripping.

I think people in wheelchairs, or with limited upper body strength would have difficulty lifting the lids on the bearproof garbage bins. In addition, these bins are usually on wooden platforms that prevent getting close enough to the bins for wheelchair or walker aid users.

Larger font on signage for toilets and more frequent signage on trails would be useful in finding one’s way. Wolf Creek provides a wide gravelled trail suitable for walkers with mobility lim-

The recipient of the Commissioner of Yukon Award for Literary Contribution is Joanna Lilley

W

hitehorse author Joanna Lilley has won this year’s Borealis Prize: The Commissioner of Yukon Award for Literary Contribution. Though Commissioner of Yukon, Angélique Bernard, does not choose the recipient, she was happy to present it to Lilley. This year marks only the second year of the Borealis Prize, but Bernard hopes it will continue, as she emphasized the importance of the Yukon’s literary community and all those involved.

“What is a bit different with the Borealis Prize is that we recognize writers, publishers and editors, but we also recognize community builders,” she said.

“So, we recognize the volunteers that work behind the scenes that we don’t always see at events, but who always show up.”

The Borealis Prize only began in 2021, meaning Lilley is second winner of the annual prize. The inaugural award last year was given to Patti Flather and Leonard Linklater for their work in founding Gwaandak Theatre and other contributions to the local literary community.

“It’s great to know that in the two years we’ve had it, we’ve had great recipients,” Bernard said of

Lilley arrived in the Yukon in 2006 and has published five books.

She has made many contributions to the literary community with her works, which include a novel, a short story collection and three poetry books, as well as her sup-

port in the development of the community, according to the Commissioner.

Bernard established the Borealis Prize last year in collaboration with the BC and Yukon Book Prizes. The process of picking the winner starts with online nomina-

tions, meaning each candidate has to be submitted by one or more supporters. When the jury picks a recipient, Bernard has that person visit her office where she presents the award. Since creativity and civic pride are two of her four pillars as Commissioner, Bernard

felt it was important to create an award that would celebrate the Yukon’s literary contributors.

Presenting the award has been a highlight of the process for Bernard.

“A trend I have seen is that people are really surprised to be nominated and chosen for the award,” she said. “Most of the people do their work to do good in the community and necessarily to get an award, so being recognized on that level is really humbling for them.”

The criteria for the award is simple enough: literary contributors and writers of any kind who have lived in the Yukon for the past 12 months, or at least three of the past five years are eligible. Writers up for nomination can have writing published anywhere in the world, not just in the Yukon. Bernard said she wants to encourage anyone who can think of a literary contributor deserving recognition to make a nomination for whomever that may be.

“As soon as you think of someone that has done wonderful things for the Yukon, don’t hesitate to get online and nominate them,” she said. “The more people that Yukoners nominate, it really shows the strength of the literary community.”

CAREERS Kelly Parker: Vice President/Eagle Gold Mine General Manager On October 1, 2018, Kelly Parker started his career with Victoria Gold during the construction of the Eagle Gold Mine as Mining Manager. This past April, he was promoted to Senior Operations Manager and on July 1 to Vice President and General Manager at the mine; a career trajectory that began as an equipment operator and continually progressed.

“My role is to provide the Eagle Gold Mine team with strong leadership and clear communications surrounding the company’s values, goals and priorities,” says Kelly. “From health and safety, environmental protection, productivities and cost alignment, I strive to make continuous improvements to the mine’s operations and to our working relationship with Yukon First Nations and all Yukoners throughout the territory.”

Kelly’s typical workday starts at 6:30 a.m. within which he conducts meetings with all mine departments, analyzes the daily safety, productivity and costing reports and tours the mine. Recently, he implemented an Employee Crew Representative program to help ensure all employees can bring forward their ideas and suggestions for continuous improvements in all areas at site.

“I typically return home to Whitehorse on weekends, where I stay connected with the mine,” continues Kelly, whose wife Bonnie is Victoria Gold’s Operational Resource Coordinator based in the company’s Whitehorse office.

“The best part of my job is the opportunity to meet a lot of people and help them find employment with the company,” says Bonnie. “The sense of community is strong here and we really enjoy participating in local events including the company’s annual golf tournament and Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society’s Every Student, Every Day Gala.”

“I thoroughly enjoy being in camp, meeting and working with the people who contribute to the success of Victoria Gold and the Eagle Gold Mine and the feeling of teamwork and community my job provides,” adds Kelly.

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine located northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND).
