he summer of 2020 could have been a bleak one for the women’s mountain biking community if not for Michelle Friesen. The Contagious Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) had to cancel Dirt Girls, its rides for women, due to COVID-19. The program is very popular, and riders were missing their weekly outings. Luckily, Friesen stepped up to the plate and created an informal community called Shredhers as a temporary alternative to Dirt Girls. “I saw a lot of new women in the sport and I saw posts on Facebook, like, ‘Where are the new trails? What does a ‘blue trail’ mean? What can I ride?’” Friesen says. “I saw that gap, because Dirt Girls couldn’t run last year. And

a year.” Friesen hosted a Facebook page where she invited women out for rides and posted skills videos aimed at women. She also applied for funding under TakingITGlobal’s Rising Youth program funded by the Government of Canada and was awarded $1,500. With that money she offered the first Yukon enduro mountain bike race for women. “I thought the enduro would be a good way to get women out,” Friesen explained. “I felt like we already deal with isolation a lot here in the winter, and then COVID hit, and then we all stayed home through the whole spring, and I felt like that was taking a big toll on people’s mental health. I just really wanted people to get out of the house, and connect with other supports and talk to people, and do it in a safe and healthy way. I thought the enduro would be a good way to do that.” The Shredhers Enduro was a cont’d on page 3 …

huge success even with the measures Friesen implemented due to the pandemic. She limited the race to 30 riders, because she also had 15-20 volunteers and her cap for total participants was 50. There was no registration fee, although people were invited to make contributions for the Whitehorse Food Bank; 10 to 12 bags of groceries were collected. The youngest rider was 12, the oldest was 65, “so we had five generations. I don’t know, it was really cool,” Friesen says. The range in rider age and skill level reflected Friesen’s goal to have an inclusive event where everyone felt welcome and supported. “It was also about empowering women too, because races can be really scary and can feel really intimidating and I wanted to create an environment where they could feel confident even if it was their first race or even if they were only on their third bike ride,” Friesen says. “You don’t have to have the best bike, you don’t have to be the best biker – anybody can do this, it’s just for fun. And I think it was really cool to see the confidence people had when they completed their first race.” Friesen is now preparing for the second Shredhers Enduro, which takes place June 26. This year, CMBC will be sponsoring the enduro as an annual club event. Friesen is once again at the helm and is scouting Grey Mountain trails for a suitable course. “The intent of the enduro is to be really inclusive and really accessible, so I’m trying to stay true to that,” she says in regards to finding a course for all levels of riders. “I don’t want to make it too difficult; I don’t want people to leave feeling discouraged.” In addition to organizing the
enduro as a CMBC event, Friesen is also organizing an event under the Shredhers banner. Thanks to her work on the enduro last year, as an “outstanding alumni” she is being awarded another $1,500 from the Rising Youth fund. For 2021, she’s holding a Shredhers mountain bike retreat for an entire weekend in July. Friday night, retreat participants will get social with glass-blowing at Lumel Studios and drinks and appies at Gather. On Saturday, the group will head out to Boréale Explorers, their base camp for riding in Carcross. Folks will spend the night at Boréale Ranch, where they’ll have a Zoom chat with Canadian pro mountain biker Micayla Gatto. Sunday will feature a bike mechanics clinic. The retreat will be free, thanks to the funding Friesen has received. As well, Dirt Girls is back on track for 2021, and Friesen is organizing the weekly rides as a CMBC board member. About 40 women showed up for the first night in early June, with volunteer leaders hitting the trails with beginner, intermediate and advanced groups of riders. The season will include a few shuttle rides, including a finale on the Blown Away trail on Mount McIntyre. Michelle Friesen is part of the next wave of amazing Yukon women aiming to make mountain biking accessible and inclusive. And she’s clearly happy to be leading the way. “I had probably my favourite summer riding last year with all the women, to see how excited they got, to see how much confidence they got,” Friesen says. “And I can’t wait, I can’t wait to ride with all the girls again this year.” n

FOR THOSE WHO NEED TO RECONCILE
O
ne of the Tarot’s many gifts is the power to illuminate the dark. There is so much darkness made available to humans, who also create darkness. The Tarot helps us remember how and where to find the light. Question: May we please have advice for residents of Canada who need to reconcile? The Card: Ace of Swords, Minor Arcana Rulerships: Gemini, Aquarius, Libra, Scorpio. Element: Air. Colours: White, Yellow. Direction: East. The Deck: The Rider-Waite Coleman-Smith, first published in 1910. Card illustration here by Aimée. Astrological Circumstances: I cast the reading during the Waning Gibbous Moon in Aquarius, in a plume of white sage, with compassionate intentions. May it harm none. Physical Description: In an otherwise clear sky, a swirling cloud presents a radiant hand holding a single sword. A gold crown encircles the blade. One side of the crown carries a palm leaf, the other an olive branch. In the far distance lay jagged blue and grey mountains. Metaphysical Description & Advice: The element for the suit of swords is Air, where we encounter the vantage point of the bird kingdom. Air provides perspective— seeking it, finding it and using it for the highest and greatest good of all. The greatest perspective, from way, way above us, includes the health of every living thing on Earth. The element of Air reveals truth greater than human law. The Ace of every suit introduces the purest form of the suit, here the purest communication is indicated. Residents of Canada who need to reconcile are advised to communicate with unprecedented purity and clarity. We are also collectively called upon to take just actions. There are a lot of weapons in the Tarot, especially in the Minor

Grasp the hilt of truth
Creative Dir:
VB
PHOTO:Aimée Dawn Robinson
The element of Air reveals truth greater than human law Arcana, the human-sized part of the deck. With so many weapons around, we become used to seeing them. We have become accustomed to seeing one another’s hurts and pain. It is important to remember these symbols are also real things. Swords wound. Swords cause trauma. We are advised, everyone, to immediately stop causing harm. Look at your own life with clear eyes and with a bird’s eye perspective. Wherever and however you are harming any living thing, stop. Just stop. This includes ceasing self-harm. You can do it. I believe in you. The atmosphere and craggy peaks of the mountains in the Ace of Swords show the stakes are high. We need to find the just and clear perspective to restore our sense of basic human potential, or we will fall onto the jagged mountain peaks. The pain of Colonization is in those rocky points. Without pure communication and just clear action, loss and pain will continue. The Ace of Swords tells us we need to communicate even when it is difficult, even when we feel scared. Have courage, grasp the
hilt of truth. The suit of swords also represents narratives and stories. We are called upon to recognize what narratives and stories are true, and which are not. Please pay attention to the stories you see and hear, and seek and tell the truth. Collectively we are advised to have the courage to do the work of reconciliation; the future is more positive than the past. There is encouragement in the olive branch and palm leaf in the Ace of Swords. The palm represents victory, abundance and beginnings. The olive symbolizes peace and healing. Go towards healing, speak truth towards peace. May it harm none. -30Tag: Specializing in nomadic arts, Aimée Dawn Robinson is a dancer, writer, visual artist, Tarot reader and astrologer. GREEN TALK WITH YCS
Lewis Rifkind is the mining analyst for the Yukon Conservation Society, and yes, he bikes to work.
Filling in the gaps
T
he rise of the commuting cyclist in the Yukon’s capital over the past decade or so has been a joy to behold. Note that this is commuting cyclists, and not recreational cyclists, although often the two are one and the same. When one thinks of a cycling city, the northern Canadian cities do not generally jump to mind. Whitehorse is no exception. Severe and long winters, roads designed for cars and trucks, and the dreaded Two-Mile Hill or Mountainview Drive separating downtown Whitehorse from most residential subdivisions are but a few of the perceived obstructions to commuters using cycling as an option for getting to and from work. Technology has, to some extent, overcome these obstacles. The rise of fat tire bicycles has allowed cycling in all but the snowiest and iciest of conditions. Electric bicycles, which assist in pedalling, permit easier uphill climbs. While some cycling purists scoff at electric bikes (or e-bikes) their ability to assist in getting up steep inclines is appreciated by most. It allows those workers who toil in downtown Whitehorse, but live above and beyond Two-Mile Hill, or at the far reaches of Mountainview Drive, to get home at the end of the day relatively relaxed and sweat-free. The Yukon is already known as a great place for summer recreational cycling. The mountain bike
trails in and around Whitehorse, the incredible system developed at Carcross on Montana Mountain, and the single-track systems being developed in other Yukon communities is a joy to behold. Cycling is so much more than just a recreational pastime. There are those, many of them, who choose to use bicycles to commute to work, to the stores, or to access recreational sites. Now, the number of commuters who are choosing to cycle appears to be on the increase. This is based on anecdotal evidence from long-time cyclists in the city. The rise of bicycle retailers over the years also shows there is increased demand for pedal-powered transportation. There are some, one hopes a minor few, Whitehorse car and truck residents who don’t like to see cyclists on what they view as their roads. Share the road is what it is all about. One advantage to vehicle drivers of the increased number of commuters choosing cycling as their means to get to work, or to go shopping is that it reduces the pressure on parking. More cyclists mean more parking spots. The City of Whitehorse currently has a hodgepodge of bike lanes, paths and trails that are slowly getting connected together and upgraded. As the author of this article once snidely remarked “if we’re not careful, Whitehorse could become a pretty decent place to bike.” Much work has yet to be done.
PHOTOS: Pixabay It’s slowly getting better, but the lack of decent bicycle racks at places of work and stores has to be addressed. Some of the more progressive offices now have shower stalls to let sweaty employees shower before work. The bike lane and path systems
are far from complete and there are some crucial gaps in the system. A good example is the lack of a bike path or lane connecting the Two-Mile Hill system with the Waterfront path. Despite the incompleteness of
Whitehorse’s bike paths, the lack of decent bike racks, the occasional irritated car driver, and the odd bit of inclement weather, the Yukon’s capital is turning into a cycling commuter city. n

DREA NAYSAYER IS STILL ROCKING A new incarnation of The Naysayers will be releasing a self-titled album on June 25 via Coax Records
felt she had to pick one over the other, despite any pressure she’s felt to do so and despite the difficulty of balancing the two. “There’s such a taboo around mothers in the music industry,” she says. “Trying to find creative time where you can indulge yourself and go into that creative space is very difficult.” The Naysayer’s album was recorded over nine months, with lots of people across the country operating remotely on the postproduction aspects throughout the process. The songs were recorded in Whitehorse with Jim Holland at Green Needle Records. Naysayer’s band is comprised of herself on guitar and vocals, and three other well-known local musicians—Paris Pick, Selina Heyliger-Hare and Tara Martin. “This is far and away the best band I’ve ever had—technically, creatively, emotionally,” says Naysayer. “The collaboration and support have really taken my music to a whole new level. All the parts I hear in my head are really wellreflected on this record.” Naysayer says the upcoming record shows her at her most authentic, making it the most successful musical experience she’s had—she’s not necessarily referring to commercial success, but more to inner success from knowing she is making exactly the music she wants to make. “I think as long as I’ve been doing this, I’ve just grown and grown and stuck to who I am,” she says. Naysayer has also noticed an ongoing shift in the politics of music scenes and the music industry as a whole. She doesn’t feel she has to fight so hard to prove herself now as she once did. “There was no #metoo when I started out,” she says. “Having a vagina was seen as, like, a disability. If anything, the evolution of gender equity has driven me so
D
rea Naysayer has a fiery intensity about her. An unwavering passion for her music shows in every word she says, and even more so in the ardent vocal delivery that’s her signature style as frontwoman of The Naysayers. She’s full of excitement as she talks about her band’s new album, especially given that she’s decided to give it a vinyl release—her first record to come out in this format. The album, simply titled The Naysayers, will see an initial soft release June 25. The vinyl copies will be available in August. “I’m telling people it’s the release so nice I’m doing it twice,” she says with a laugh. “It’s nice because the summer here is so jam-packed, people will probably forget about the June release by the time August rolls around.” A vinyl release is expensive and Naysayer know this, but she says she is proud of enough of this album to throw all her money at it and give it the treatment it calls for. “I think the album is worth it,” she says. “I think the product deserves this. I haven’t really ever felt like making that kind of investment before and this feels like it needs to be honoured that wat because vinyl is just so righteous.” Naysayer has been in this business a long time. She’s released 10 albums and toured nationally. Though she has a family and a life outside of music, she’s never let them interfere with each other, or
much more. I’ve been saying this stuff for so long and now I finally have a place.” Naysayer doesn’t have a secret as far as how she’s kept her passion and intensity. She attributes at least half of it to just who she is—a “high-strung, driven person.” She’s also very autobiographical in her music. To her, that can be an outlet for washing away her negative experiences and dealing with baggage in order to become the best version of herself possible. Naysayer knows her upcoming release is special. In a lot of ways, it feels to her like this is finally the album she’s always been aiming to make. “It all just feels like it’s exactly the right time and the right place,” she says. “I don’t like to use the word ‘deserved’ but I’m not totally surprised that all this feels so natural, just because I’ve never given up on the vision of having something like this.” The Naysayers will be released initially on June 25 through Coax Records, an independent Canadian label. Check out the band’s Facebook page at facebook.com/ dreanaysayer/ for summer show announcements and more details on the vinyl release. n

rawn Together: embroidered portraits by Meshell Melvin and Doortraits: Intimate Pandemic Images by Alistair Maitland,
PHOTOS: Nicole Bauberger two exhibitions on display right now at the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery, will be most meaningful for an audience of Yukoners. As you view the art, you will look for faces you recognize. I found this experience both timely and poignant as I walked through the gallery, a
Meshell Melvin uses a contour line approach to drawing in her embroidered portraits on canvas
mask obscuring my own features. In both shows, the presence of the artist becomes part of the observation of the subject. The large photograph that greets the viewer coming into Alistair Maitland’s Doortraits: Intimate Pandemic Images features a smiling older couple, seen through a window. The reflection of trees and sky outside would have made them invisible, but for the shadowed shape cast on the window by the photographer’s silhouette, the arc of his finger over the shutter button. Large-scale photographs high on the wall evoke the distance we have all been respecting and from which we have been viewing each other. Smaller images lower on the wall proliferate the people depicted and bring us, as viewers, in for a more intimate gesture of viewing. Maitland began making these
Meshell Melvins embroidered portraits and Alistair Maitlands doortraits both evoke a sense of our community observed photographs in the first scary weeks of the pandemic when we were self-isolating, confronting the almost existential presence of all we did not know about COVID-19. He came to realize in that moment “how much of his own identity was wrapped up in his work highlighting the identities, adventures and achievements of others.” He found a way to do this anyway. I found many feelings looking back at me from these photographs. Intimacy, family love, worried children, brave smiles, staginess and silliness, not only from human Yukon residents but their animal companions. A Northwest Coast-style mask, beaded moccasins–these photographs also bear witness to the household art
that sustains us. No tags give you names, but you will see people you know, even just from the grocery store. The choice to leave individuals unidentified shifts the intent of this portraiture, from the depiction of a particular individual, to a portrait of our community at a historical moment. In the next gallery, I am delighted to see Drawn Together: embroidered portraits by Meshell. This project dates from 2003 and coincides with my own earliest days in the territory. I sat for Meshell on at least one occasion, “being seen without judgement and with kindness and regard,” as she writes in her artist statement. cont’d on page 18 ...

FAREWELL, KONA’S COALITION Animal welfare service Kona’s Coalition is shutting down after nearly a decade By: Manus Hopkins
I
t was a difficult yet necessary decision to shut down Kona’s Coalition, according to founder and president Jordi Mikeli-Jones. The Whitehorse animal protection non-profit has been serving the community since 2013, but with board members leaving and the pandemic bringing new difficulties, it wasn’t feasible to continue. “At our inception, we were four women that were very passionate about animal advocacy,” said Mikeli-Jones. “At our last board meeting we really talked seriously about what we had in the bank, what we were prepared to do, and if we could make it to our 10th anniversary. We did some soul-searching and decided it was time for us to wind down operations.”
For the last two years or so, Mikeli-Jones and Madeleine Girard were handling operations on their own as the only two remaining board members. It became too much work for two people alone. The pandemic also made it more difficult to fundraise, with inperson events becoming rare and strict. Mikeli-Jones used to be heavily involved in event management, staging music festivals including Sunstroke and Moonstroke, as well as Halloween parties, fashion shows and golf tournaments. She said the organization spent around $250,000 in fundraised money during its time. While it’s sad to have to call it a day, Mikeli-Jones said she is trying to focus on the positives, remembering the great work Kona’s Coalition did for animals and families in the Yukon during its nearly 10 years of operation. “I feel it’s been an arduous journey, but one I’m really proud of,” she said. “I know that we’ve made a difference and ultimately, that was our fundamental goal: to improve animal welfare, increase advocacy, focus on education and help animals and families in need, and we’ve helped thousands.” Some of the outreach Kona’s cont’d on page 19 ...

The Sundog Veggies project continues for a second year
I
n 2020, when the Yukon closed its borders to the outside world due to COVID-19, Sundog Retreat owners Andrew Finton and his partner, Heather, found an opportunity in the challenge. They created the Sundog Veggies project, allowing them to pivot from
a focus on tourism to agriculture. In so doing, they created a space to mentor youth while supporting the community and increasing Yukon’s food security. Despite getting a late start on the season (beginning to plant around Easter), last year’s project was a huge success. “We hired thirty people last year, planted almost three acres of crops, and harvested 40,000 pounds of vegetables, all by hand and starting from scratch,” says Finton. In the process, he re-ignited his
passion for community development and training projects, combined with his long-standing interest in food security. “I’ve always enjoyed working with youth,” he says. “I did a similar project to this 30 years ago with youth in Brazil. It has been really inspiring to create a similar project again here in the Yukon.” Finton worked closely with Yukon youth in the past when he founded the Sundog Carving Project (which became the Northern Cultural Expressions Society), which has allowed him to draw on

Got Puppies…? Did you know that If you surrender all the pups to YARN, we’ll raise the pups, pay for all their care and veterinary costs, find them homes using a responsible adoption process – and spay your mama dog for free and give her back. We are trying to reduce the future over’PUP’ulation in the North, by adopting to family’s that will spay & neuter. Each female dog that is not spayed could produce up to 67,000 descendants in her lifetime. Unwanted dogs - suffer. For more information or to send us a message visit our

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips
HOW ARE THINGS UNDER THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR? Have you had a look under your hood, how are your fluid levels, what about your belts and hoses. Most owners manuals show you where to check fluids at, if you have to add any fluids make sure they are the ones for your car. The belts and hoses are sometimes a little harder to check, if you are unable to check them or have any questions, take your car to your mechanic so they can have a look at it for you.

existing relationships, especially with the local First Nations, to make the Sundog Veggies project a success. Recognizing that the farm is on the traditional territory of the Ta’an Kwach’an Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nations, the Sundog Veggies project was designed to benefit the communities on whose traditional territory it is housed. In 2020, the project provided 13,000 pounds of vegetables to the Whitehorse Food Bank, Ta’an Kwäch’än and Kwanlin Dün families, and other community families and volunteers. In 2021, the project aims to build on its relationships with Elders and young people wanting to spend more
time on the land. After the success of the 2020 Sundog Veggies project, Finton is working with several organizations to train young people in the agricultural sector this summer. “We’ve got a great team of growers, learners and mentors eager to start as soon as the snow melts.” The snow is slowing things down a bit however, as fields are buried in three feet of snow. The Sundog Veggies team has sectioned off about 11 acres with game fencing to keep the deer out of the fields this year. The plan is to plant roughly the same area as last year (about three acres), but to house more of the produce in greenhouses.
There are four key goals to the Sundog Veggies: Our Growing Community Project for 2021: Build and offer a youth agriculture training program, based on the 2020 pilot program. Increase local food production for Yukon residents. Strengthen agricultural and community networks through paid mentorship opportunities. Utilize existing tourism infrastructure to support transition to an agri-tourism social enterprise. “We started really last-minute last year, says Finton. “It was really sort of off-the-cuff, but the crew who worked here was amazing and what we accomplished with them was amazing. The support from the community has been incredible, and we owe thanks to a huge number of people who helped and made this a success. We’re really excited to continue the project for a second year.” n

The monumental number of Meshell Melvins portraits create a world you can get lost in looking for people you recognize Each portrait, drawn in olive green thread on an 8 x 8 piece of raw canvas, claims both embroidery and portraiture for the practice of drawing. The locations or events where Melvin set up her Universal Movement Machine and drew all comers, as well as the years in which she drew each group of portraits, offer landmarks to help figure out who you know here. As in Doortraits, individuals aren’t named. Part of the mystery of this show lies in looking at all the faces, trying to find who you recognize. I encourage you to
circle the space many times, as you’ll notice different things as you go. I am sure that some of the people in these portraits are not with us anymore. I noticed that people are more recognizable from a distance of as much as 10 metres. Most faces fill the square, gazing directly at you, but some look down, evoking blinking, which gives a sense of rest and relief from all the direct gazes. Some portraits have space around them, children and sometimes adults, which give me a deeper sense of their vulnerability. There are in-

For me, Melvin’s practice draws from her own background as a performer. Over the years, her public drawing sessions have inspired and comforted me. “The greatest work for me is to be fully present with the model in focussed attention,” she says. Her most recent portraits highlight some of the opportunities that COVID’s proliferation of online communications carry with them. Her portraits from 2020 and 2021 were carried out over digital means, but rather than including only people physically present in the Yukon, they also draw from models across Canada, the USA and Europe. Sometimes the constraints that narrow our worlds also widen them. What is art? As an arts writer, I like to leave this question openended, to give me space to wonder. Looking at these two shows, it seems to me that whatever art is, it is something made out of human attention, including the attention of the artist and the attention of the audience. I would suggest that the qual-

Farewell, Kona’s Coalition... cont’d from page 12

Kona, pictured here, was Mikeli-Jones’ dog, the first dog ever helped by Kona’s Coalition
Coalition provided included a safe haven for pets program, a vaccination clinic, a spaying and neutering subsidy program, mobilizing youth through a junior ambassador program and, of course, offering fostering for animals in need. “There’s an emotional toll that it takes when you’re in animal welfare,” said Mikeli-Jones. “In the 20 years I’ve been involved in animal advocacy, it’s certainly toughened me up a little bit. But we’ve always been that voice for
animals. We never let people or politics get in the way of what we were doing and I think that’s why we had so much success.” Mikeli-Jones said she is able to take comfort knowing that the services Kona’s Coalition provided are not going away completely. She has connected with Sammy Salter, a Whitehorse veterinarian who works with The Humane Society and Whitehorse Connects to offer a mobile clinic. Mikeli-Jones is supporting Salter’s work by allo-

In Mikeli-Jones’ mind, she will always be involved in animal welfare in some capacity, and is always willing to help wherever and however she can with animal protection organizations in the community. While she is busy with a family and her role running the ever-expanding Triple J’s business, she’s also taken up a new project in her spare time. “I’ve dedicated 20 years of
my life to animal advocacy in my community. I think where I’m headed next is to build my own hobby farm,” she said. “I can redirect some of this energy to my own animals at home. I have 10 now and we’re looking to grow, so there could be something I might do on a personal level which could involve taking in animals who need homes as pets.” Mikeli-Jones said that one of the best parts of running Kona’s Coalition for so many years was
being able to keep alive the memory of her dog, Kona. Kona was the first dog helped by the organization, which made an amputation possible for the pup. “It was never easy,” she said. “But we put our hearts and souls into keeping this organization alive.” Visit konascoalition.org to read more about the organization. n

Community Victoria Gold Klondike Gold Ruff - Event Success The entire team at Victoria Gold extends its congratulations to Humane Society Yukon and all the event organizers and participants for coming together to make the Victoria Gold Klondike Gold Ruff 2021 such a resounding success. Victoria Gold was very pleased to sponsor, and participate in, this brand new 5k, 10k and half marathon virtual event, to raise awareness and funds for the Society’s efforts towards animal welfare and care in the territory. Over $29,000 was raised by 283 participants (and their furry friends) between May 22 and June 5 to benefit the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter in Whitehorse and other animal rescue operations in the Yukon. The Victoria Gold team, the Hearts of (Victoria) Gold, made up of employees from across the company, raised $17,621 towards this achievement. Victoria Gold’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mark Ayranto and his dog Murphy, were the team’s top fundraisers.
