JESSE DEVOST’S SUPERPOSITION

 

I

n Superposition, Jesse Devost’s new exhibition at Arts Underground, the artist explores how to give visual representation to invisible subatomic states. In doing so, Devost offers an apology to the quantum physicists who might take issue with his interpretation of a complex concept. “I am not a physicist,” Devost admits. “And so, I need to apologize to anybody who is because I’m probably getting parts of this wrong.” With that caveat out of the way, Devost defines superposition as “the physical paradox of two distinct states, when added together equal a new valid state… The superposition state exists until it interacts with or is observed by an external viewer, af-

A pause

Vertical holding

Quasidimensional efficiency

ter which the superposition collapses and a single state or outcome remains.” “It’s totally beyond my understanding,” Devost admits. Superpositions may be beyond Devost’s comprehension, but it is within his reach to imagine and to represent what they might look like. In doing so, he typically starts with an image or symbol we find familiar – old buildings in Dawson, for instance, or Mount Everest. Then, Devost adds seemingly unrelated elements onto the surface of the image to convey the idea of multiple states. For two of the works – A pause and Quasidimensional efficiency – Devost had photos of Dawson City street scenes enlarged and printed onto large pieces of wood. He then used a marker to write randomly-generated words and to draw zig-zag waves on the image surface. His additions represent

sub-atomic particles called neutrinos that rapidly fly through the universe in the trillions. The themes and the methods Devost uses in Superposition are similar to some of his earlier work. For instance, he has often used hands-on manipulation of surfaces to explore unstable or uncertain states in the human mind or, in the case of Superposition, in the universe itself. “A lot of the art I make is about the ephemeral nature of a thought, or trying to remember something, and I feel that fits into this as well,” Devost explains. “You’re looking at a moment but there’s so much more going on in that moment than what you’re seeing, and I think this is an extension of some types of art that I’ve been exploring for a long time.” However, there is one difference in his approach to Superposition compared to earlier work. In the past, Devost took a funda-

mentalist approach to art-making, using as rudimentary methods as possible and eschewing the use of technology. With Superposition, Devost decided to ease off a bit on this hard-core, DIY approach, especially when it stood in the way of his imagination. “This time I took a step back because I was really struggling with making the images I was thinking of in my mind,” Devost says. This admission led to the large photos on wood, which Devost had printed for him. Whether he uses technology or not, art-making provides Devost with a way to “nerd out” and explore complex concepts that can’t be visualized otherwise. In doing so, he creates a world that is vaguely familiar, but also strangely beautiful and askew. Superposition will be at Arts Underground until June 26. Check out work from all Devost’s exhibits at jessedevost.com. n

FRIDAY IS CONCERT TIME AT THE GAZEBO

Project funded through the federal government’s New Horizons initiative.

CHROMATICDREAMS.NET

Most Fridays this summer, whether there is rain or shine, it will be concert time at noon at the Front Street Gazebo.

T

he first of these events, organized by the Klondike Visitors Association, kicked off in spite of a very light sprinkling of rain, on June 4. Featured performers for the first event were the Fiddle Club. While some locals were fooled into thinking this might be young-

sters from the Dawson’s Youth Fiddlers, who can sometimes be found busking around town in the summer, this was a trio from Whitehorse, Ryan McNally, Sarah Hamilton and Ellorie McKnight delighted an audience that grew to about 50 over the hour with a mixture of country and traditional instrumental tunes and songs, featuring the three of them interchangeably on fiddles, guitar, double bass and vocals. As noted in his introduction to the band, the KVA’s Andy Cunningham said, “Fiddle Club isn’t a club, it’s a band… of fiddle nerds. Fiddle Club just had a better ring to it! Sarah Hamilton is Artistic Director of the

Fiddleheads and also released an amazing old time & western swing solo album. “Ellorie McKnight’s fiddle playing and angelic voice is probably one of the Yukon’s best kept secrets. She’s also a scientist. “They are joined by some guy named Ryan who seems unable to put an instrument down even though he doesn’t know how to play it.” This free event was broadcast remotely over CYFT-fm, and recorded for what may be a later broadcast. The summer long event is being sponsored by the City of Dawson, the KVA, Diamond Tooth Gerties, KIAC, DCMF, the Yukon Government, and Parks Canada. cont’d on page 5 ...

aren Thomas takes a lighthearted approach to artmaking. This makes for a joyful experience for folks who take in her exhibit 2020 Landscape Series: A Path Forward which is currently showing at Arts Underground in Whitehorse. “I don’t want to take anything too seriously, especially as I get older,” Thomas says. “It’s so liberating because you stop worrying about pleasing other people and you allow yourself to just have fun. And I want to keep it playful, and I don’t want to tie myself down to one certain style or expectation of anything – I just want it to keep evolving and have a playful, childlike approach where you can do anything you want. It doesn’t have to have any rhyme or reason to it.” In spite of the exhibit title, Thomas says that her original intention was not necessarily to create a series of landscapes. The body of work began with Thomas’s desire to experiment with 4’x4’ canvases, and the landscapes emerged from there. “I don’t usually plan what I do,” Thomas explains. “It just sort of fell into place that there were landscapes coming into the scene in that square format.” One of the first works that Thomas completed in the series is a scene on the Dempster Highway. Wildflowers and grasses burst from the front of the canvas in myriad colours and shapes. Meanwhile, a grey mountain lurks in the background, and seems to play second fiddle to the floral celebration taking place in the foreground. Many of the paintings are hu-

Midday Meeting mourous and engaging. A peaceful gathering of wild animals in The Midday Meeting suggests the potential for unity and overcoming differences. An amply-bosomed Sasquatch strolls furtively through Miles Canyon, a rare representation of a female of the elusive creature. As playful as many of the paintings are, Thomas was impacted by the events of 2020, and her troubled subconscious erupted in unexpected ways in her work. In one large canvas, a small bear stands in a burnt forest peering out at the viewer. Thomas created the painting at the beginning of the pandemic. She was “in a

daze” as people around her were doing unusual things like stocking up on toilet paper, making bread at home, and placing hearts in windows. Thomas realized in hindsight that the bewildered bear is a self-portrait. It’s expression is as if to say “Oh my goodness, what’s happening?” Thomas says. The two final pieces are not paintings, but collages composed of images from previous works from which Thomas cut out what she liked, and discarded the rest. This bold act of repurposing suggests that Thomas refuses to see art as sacred; it can always be destroyed or reused. This also reflects her interest in constantly

exploring, even if it means she doesn’t have a recognizable style. “That’s ok, that’s not something I strive for,” she says, referring to an attributable style. “I want to allow for evolving and changing all the time.” 2020 Landscape Series: A Path Forward will be at Arts Underground in Whitehorse until June 26. You can see more of her work on her website kitdottir.ca and on Instagram @kitdottir. n

Come and see the wildlife! ... cont’d “We’re open the entire summer, which is exciting compared to last year,” said Lindsay Caskenette, manager of visitor services at the Wildlife Preserve. Last summer, the facilities were not able to open until June, but this year, the Wildlife Preserve has been off to a strong start already, even without tourists being able to enter the territory. According to Caskenette, the Wildlife Preserve has received a huge level of local support, with Yukoners coming out to see the wildlife, despite the less-thanstellar weather so far. “Members and locals are diligent in visiting,” she said. “We have some members that come almost daily, rain or shine.” The Preserve offers daily interpretive bus tours, spanning an hour and a half, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., for patrons who wish to develop a deeper understanding of the Yukon’s wildlife and their habitats. Visitors are also free to walk around the facilities on their own timeline, or even bike. Memberships for individuals and families can be purchased for the Wildlife Preserve. Members receive admission during regularly scheduled hours and can take part in bus tours, as well as receiving other benefits. “We’ve really seen a huge uptake in memberships in the last year,” said Caskenette. “That’s been really fantastic.” One of the most exciting things about this summer in particular is the new baby animals. The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is home to 11 different species now, and recently welcomed two bison calves a couple months ago. “We are hopeful to see a few more baby animals join our collection of animal residents,” said Caskenette, noting that it’s possible a few caribou calves and lynx kittens may be born this summer. “We’re still keeping an eye on those species for any offspring to be born in the next little bit.”

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve offers a safe and respectful way to get up close with the wildlife that can be found in the Yukon, and keeps its animals in humane conditions. The Wildlife Preserve also cares for orphaned and injured wild animals, rehabilitating them so they can be sent back into the wild. To raise funds for these efforts, they put on a 5-kilometre fun run each year. “That’s always a well-attended event every year,” said Caskenette. “It’s a great supporting event to all the animals that come through.” Luckily, the preserve is large and mostly outdoors, so there aren’t many restrictions that change the visitor experience. Bus tours are back to full capacity. Patrons must wear masks when seated on the busses, but those who choose to walk or bike out-

side do not need to. Visitors are also free to buy tickets online if they don’t feel comfortable lining up in a queue. “Over the last year, we’ve been really endeavouring to stay open for the locals,” said Caskenette. “Us Yukoners know we need to get outside any time of year, and if you wear the right clothing, that can make all the difference.” The Wildlife Preserve’s hours have also expanded from last year, and the facilities are open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. To find out more, visit https:// yukonwildlife.ca/ n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively. Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop. The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air. Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance.

3. Blend until completely smooth. 4. Pour into a large cup or mason jar and enjoy. Makes 1 serving.

 Banana substitutions: instead of using a fresh whole banana, you can also use frozen banana slices (about ¾ cup worth). 

Coconut milk substitutions: instead of using coconut milk, you can use unsweetened or vanilla oat milk to bring out more of the oat flavour.

 Peanut butter substitutions: If you have an allergy to peanuts, you can swap it out for sunflower seed butter or any other type of nut butter.  Oat flour substitutions: instead of using ground oat flour, you can also use rolled or quick oats. You may want to soak the oats first so you don’t end up with little oat chunks in your smoothie.  Maple syrup substitutions: inPHOTO: Tara Klippert

ART WITH MAYA

Maya is a visual artist and art teacher, based in Whitehorse, Yukon. She was born and raised in Israel, and has traveled to the United States, Canada and Europe. She teaches art classes and workshops across Yukon in varied frameworks, for painting, drawing, crafts and more. She is also exhibiting in varied art galleries across Canada. Her work reflects the connections of art, love and nature, through colours, and how it empowers us and our communities through colours. Her website is mayaart.ca and you can find her on social media at “Art by Maya”.

MINI WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPES Hello artists! Our art: Today’s art is inspired by the beauty of a single colour—blue!

I

love blue colours. Our work today will be a great example of how we can make a beautiful landscape, even if we only have one colour. We will be inspired by monochromatic colours/blue hues and perspective. I encourage you to explore blue hues with me, but also to keep exploring many other colours after today, whatever you love best. Remember, we can’t make mistakes in art! Today we’ll make our little mountain landscape. Let’s start!

1. Design mountain lines on your paper as in the picture—bonus point to be inspired by your favorite hiking places!

Take one blue (I used ultramarine, but anything works) and add white to make a lighter color for the sky. Colour the sky above the mountains.

3. Take another blue (I used phthalo, but, again, anything works!) and add it as on the first, closest, layer of mountains. The mountains that are closer to you will be darker. This helps to create perspective and depth.

5. Blend a bit more white in with your blue and add it to the next layer of mountains. Repeat with as many mountain layers as you have.

What you’ll need:  Watercolour paper  Watercolours  Brushes and a water container  Pencil

2. Get two blue colors ready

Enjoy! Bonus: add a bird/other animals in your landscape.

4. Add a little white to the same blue you used in the mountains and add it to the next layer of mountains.

Paul David Rath Paul David Rath was born in Brazil on November 4, 1957 to Canadian Lutheran missionaries Ernest and Crystal (Hutchison) Rath. He passed away suddenly at home on June 4, 2021, at the age of 63 years. Paul was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, son and husband, as well as a hunter, a fisherman, a joker, a toastmaster, a punster, a poet, a storyteller, a book collector, and a tremendous friend. He was the pet of two dogs, Bear and Boo, back seat drivers who also thought he was great fun. Paul is survived by his wife Lisa Douglas, his son, Jonathan, his son Aaron and his wife Hollie (MacIntosh) and beloved grandchildren George and Emerie, by his siblings, sisters Rosemarie (Richard) Klein and Katharine (Cecil) Howell and brother Daniel (Lily) Rath, and their families, and by Laureen Baker, the mother of his sons. Brazil couldn’t keep Paul long enough to even begin his compulsory military service as a Brazilian. Ernest and Crystal brought him to the North — Alberta’s Peace River Country — at the age of five and then to Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley, where he learned to scout Okanagan Lake for the legendary Ogopogo instead. Later, Paul made homes of his own in Victoria, Oliver, Prince Rupert and the uppermost northwest corner of British Columbia, where he learned to scout the roadside for moose made out of trees twisted by cold and wind. It helped the miles fly by. In addition to laughing with delight at life, Paul committed himself with respect and diligence to many jobs over his life: People’s Food Mart in Kelowna, Revenue Canada, Canada Post, and selling life insurance. When the last of those didn’t work out, he devoted 25 years to the Canada Border Service Agency and retired at the rank of Superintendent. In retirement, he was a maintenance contractor. When there was work that needed to be done, Paul always stood up to do it. His sense of ethics was of the highest order. He loved all parts of his job, except maybe shovelling snow. To him, that just didn’t seem fair. Such might just be the mysteries that attend Canadians born in Brazil. Paul shovelled the snow.

n

Paul was an avid traveller and rejoiced in seeing the world with Lisa. In recent years, they travelled to Antarctica, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Tanzania and Amsterdam. Yes, to him it was a country in itself! A 2020 cruise to the Caribbean was cut short by the pandemic. Gifted storyteller that he was, he turned even that slow trip into an adventure. Paul especially loved his journeys across Canada. One of his favourite destinations was a birthday trip to Churchill, Manitoba to see the Polar Bears, which, he agreed, were just as good as the grizzly bears back home in the North, who ate dandelions off his lawn. One of his favourite Canadian treasures was a collection of red and white tulips, the colour of the Canadian flag, which he brought back from Ottawa. They had been a gift to Canada from a grateful Dutch nation for liberation in World War II. Paul was so proud to be Canadian that he dug his tulips free of the snow every spring so they could bloom before winter. Paul came from Russian-German farmers on the Black Sea and he loved the earth. He delighted in everything

that grew from the soil and loved to sink his hands into it. He was passionate about gardening, always keeping his grandfather’s antique tools polished and ready for work. Even the North couldn’t stop him. He invented bear-proof ways to compost and was intensely proud of his Halloween pumpkins. Every fall, they could be seen ripening on the windowsill, so big he never could quite wrap his farmer’s hands completely around them. Paul was an accomplished writer. From studying poetry and short story writing at the University of Victoria in the 1970s, he wrote occasional poems and ballads for many people. He never gave up his dream of being published himself and became a contributing writer of the Arts and Entertainment Magazine What’s Up Yukon. Paul’s greatest dream was to be a father and grandfather. In February of 2021, his second greatest dream also came true, with the publication of a memoir of white fishing on Okanagan Lake: Fishing With My Fathers. The book’s warm and wise portrait of fathers, sons, God and fish was a bestseller through the spring. To be able to share his stories with the world brought Paul great joy. Paul had all the gifts of a pastor, a talent he turned into an active life on Facebook, bringing friends and family together from across the continent with silly puns, heartwarming sayings and, every time he travelled, enthusiastic animal reports, richly illustrated with photographs. Pandemic isolation from Coast to Coast was lightened by Paul’s devotion to keeping everyone focussed on joy. Paul touched many people in his life. He was a friend, a counsellor, a champion and a protector to so many people, and caught everyone up in his care. He left no-one out. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Paul’s favourite Canadian charities: World Vision, Operation Smile, the Heart and Stroke Society, the MS Society, and the Red Cross. A memorial will be held in November in Penticton. Following the service, his ashes will be spread at the fishing point across from Ogopogo’s lair, where many of the stories from Fishing With My Fathers came to life and he learned his greatest lesson, to pass on the gifts and care given to him. He did it so well.

Message from the President National Indigenous Peoples Day On behalf of the entire Victoria Gold team, I extend my best wishes to all Yukoners as we come together to reflect upon and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, June 21. This very important day provides us all with an opportunity to recognize the rich histories, cultures, voices and traditional knowledge of Yukon First Nations here in the territory and of Indigenous peoples from coast to coast to coast. We are very proud of our company’s long-standing partnership with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun and its citizens, within whose traditional territory the Eagle Gold Mine is located and operates. We look forward to the ongoing dialogue this partnership brings and to continued meaningful and respectful working relationships throughout, and beyond, the life of the mine.

Partnerships are key to the success of the Eagle Gold Mine. (L to R): Yukon Premier Sandy Silver, Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell, First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun Chief Simon Mervyn at the mine’s ground breaking ceremony, prior to the mine’s construction, in August 2017.
