ukon Music Camp Society has opened registration for the second year of Yukon Summer Music Camp, pandemic edition. While last year’s camp was considerably smaller than usual, and limited by stricter COVID guidelines, this year’s will look more like it has in previous years, thanks to the incredible progress the Yukon has made in curbing the spread of the virus.

Whether that is able to happen or not, Yukon Music Camp Society is still welcoming some new additions to the summer camp faculty team. Simone Kitchen, who was born and raised in Whitehorse be-

fore moving to Toronto to pursue post-secondary education in political science and journalism, will be taking on the role of producer.

Kitchen is a former student of the music camp, and has since worked

in theatre, radio and TV. Another new faculty member this season is Angie Tremblay, who will be serving as administrative officer. Tremblay has worked for such organizations as Jazz

Aviation, the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority and Indigenous Services Canada. She has also taken courses at Yukon

“We are delighted to have Simone and Angie on board,” said Schiman. “They both bring the experience, energy, enthusiasm and commitment that has allowed this camp to thrive for almost 35 years.”

Schiman also expressed gratitude to departing camp coordinator Katherine McCallum, saying McCallum grew the camp greatly during her years of service.

“Working as the music camp producer for the past eight years has been an absolute treat,” said McCallum. “I plan to return every year as a student, as do my kids.”

This year, the Yukon Summer Music Camp will be offering a variety of classes, such as vocal classes with Diyet van Lieshout, fiddle classes with Kieran Poile, music theory classes with Graeme Poile, guitar and ukulele classes with Steve Slade, piano classes with Andrea McColeman, jazz combo classes with David Restivo, rock band classes with Paris Pick and Selina Heyligers-Hare and many others, for an absolutely packed schedule.

Something new this year that has never been offered before is a class in beatboxing with Marshal

Buyck, also known as John Stosh.

“I’m really trying to plug the beatboxing class this year, because Marshal is unreal and it’s the first time we’re offering it,” said Kitchen.

While the early registration period has passed, regular registration is open May 31 until July 15. Late registrations sent in af-

ter the deadline will be subject to an additional administration fee of 15 per cent. Classes without a sufficient number of registered students will be cancelled and cancellations will be announced on July 18. Classes are offered for children, youths and adults.

ARTS IN THE PARK IS BACK ON THE AIR For the second year in a row, Arts in the Park will be presenting an adapted season to fit with pandemic protocols Last year, the pandemic forced nearly every planned summer event in the world to be cancelled or adapted to be presented in a different format. Rather than postpone the Arts in the Park season, our team decided to present the annual local concert series as a live show on the radio, in partnership with CJUC 92.5 FM Whitehorse Community radio.

After a successful, four-week run, it was clear that, this summer, the show would be able to look much the same, especially given that Arts in the Park’s usual stage is in Lepage Park, which is under construction this summer.

Artist in the Window: Joyce Majiski is demonstrating bookmaking and artist book works (11a.m. to 2p.m. Wed June 9th to Friday 11th at Yukon Artists @ Work) runs from May 31 until July 9, and consists of a noon-hour performance broadcast live each weekday, with an additional youth-based performance each Wednesday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. The Thursday shows will be presented in partnership with Parks Canada and CFYT 106.9 FM: The Spirit of Dawson, and will feature artists from Dawson City, recorded at the Palace Grand Theatre.

Among the several new features this year is a series of inperson concerts at MacBride Museum. Each Friday, Arts in the Park, in partnership with MacBride Museum, will present a free noonhour show, while a re-run of a previous broadcast will be played during the Arts in the Park radio slot. With pandemic restrictions easing, the opportunity to bring back an in-person component to Arts in the Park was an opportunity we had to take advantage of.

Joining our team this year is well-known Whitehorse musician Keitha Clark, who has stepped into the role of producer for the 2021 Arts in the Park season. Clark moved to the Yukon 16 years ago.

On her second day in Whitehorse, had already been asked to perform at that year’s Arts in the

Park. She has since played at Lepage Park during Arts in the Park’s usual season every year.

“It made me realize I made the right choice about where I wanted to live” she says of the community she discovered through the concert series.

Clark has brought her own children, a friend of hers who is in her 80s and visitors of all kinds to see shows at Arts in the Park, and considers it an important part of the Yukon’s artistic culture.

“I’m so proud of what Arts in the Park brings to our community on so many different levels,” she says.

Because one of Clark’s favourite parts of Arts in the Park’s typical season is seeing the residents of care homes come out to the shows at lunch time, she is excited to bring yet another piece of in-person programming to this year’s edition, having select artists perform in the care homes for residents.

“I’m excited about the different partnership opportunities this has created,” Clark says of the adapted season.

METHOD

If you’re using herbs with woody bits (thyme and rosemary), remove the tough stems before you process them.

Coarsely chop the herbs then place in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Run the food processor on high

Some activities and events will look different this year, but Sport Yukon is still offering summer programming for 2021

A

s the school year winds down, Sport Yukon is shifting its attention away from its academic year kids’ programming and onto its various summer activities and events.

Sport Yukon, a member organization which includes sport governing bodies, clubs and associa-

Last year was a tough season, as many events and programs had to be cancelled, including the 2020 Arctic Winter Games, a particularly harsh blow.

Typically, the biggest annual summer event Sport Yukon is part of is the Klondike Road Relay, a bicycle race from Skagway to Whitehorse that has been happening every September since 1983.

Last year’s edition had to be cancelled due to COVID and a virtual event was hosted to make up for the cancellation. While what this summer will look like is still unclear in many ways, Sport Yukon is determined to host a relay in

some form and is asking potential attendees to stay tuned for info on the 2021 “not-so-Klondike” Road Relay.

According to Sport Yukon office coordinator and KRR administrator Julie Monaghan, several more sports are slated to start up once the snow is gone, including softball and soccer. Additionally, Flatwater Paddling, Yukon Canoe and Kayak Club, Yukon Orienteering Association and Athletics Yukon are expected to offer summer programming. Polarettes Gymnastics, Aboriginal Sport Circle, Wolfpack Basketball and Glacier Bears Swim Club have been operating indoors all year and should continue to operate during the summer. The City of Whitehorse offers camps for youth and will continue to do so this year, with some modified programming and safety measures.

The listed associations have all had to have their pandemic guidelines approved in order to move forward. The protocols are based on the advice of their national sport governing bodies.

Many guidelines for Sport Yukon’s summer programs revolve around the usual steps to control the spreads of the pandemic: masks, distancing, sanitizing, gathering limits, etc. To participate in Polarettes Gymnastics’ summer programming, all athletes must wear masks and keep plastic bags to store their masks in the event that they are removed.

Members must also wash their hands thoroughly before entering the facilities, declare their health and travel history and show up dressed to play, as changing rooms are closed. The facilities also have a one-way traffic flow to prevent crowding.

It can be complicated to ensure all these happen with certain team sports, so it is important for Sport Yukon’s members to have thorough plans for how their guidelines will look. Softball Yukon’s return-to-play protocols include the league being required to play in bubbles, each of no more than 60 people. Players are also required to wash their hands before entering the dugouts and discouraged from having team meetings.

Community water jugs are not permitted, and players must have their own personal water bottles.

Equipment is also not allowed to be shared amongst players. Necessary cleaning will take place between games. Luckily, during sports like softball, players are able to stand very far apart.

Red Wigglers turning kitchen waste into “Brown Gold”

Gold, the shiny yellow metal that is sought the world over, affects our lives.

T

he word itself has an energy and power of its own, especially for Yukoners. We seek it, we wear it, we are in awe of those who have it.

We want our own stash. We have the Gold Rush and the reminders of the excitement and heartbreak of that event all around us.

“Brown Gold” is more readily available, however, and easily within your grasp for minimal effort. Brown gold is compost. We all know we should compost. It is the right thing to do, even in bear country. Composting is the

natural process of decay. Organic material is reduced over time by bacteria, fungi and worms to a nutrient-rich soil conditioner.

Composting is giving back to the earth. It is recycling kitchen scraps and yard waste into food for your flowers and vegetables.

Unlike gold mining, where something is taken from the earth, composting is the process of returning organic material back to the earth. It is the magic of taking things you would otherwise throw away, letting them break down or decompose, and using the resulting “soil” in your garden or flower beds. Compost promotes plant growth like gas and a spark promote fire. This year we planted potatoes in a raised bed of what was almost pure compost.

We had many potatoes that were twice as big as any you would see in a store.

You can turn your kitchen scraps, including onion peels, apple cores and carrot tops, as well as your yard waste (think grass clippings and leaves) into a rich soil enhancer. It is the ultimate recycling process. If you get a gardener talking about composting, their eyes will likely glaze over when they gush about the benefits of compost—how it promotes plant growth and how worm castings (aka poop) are worth their weight in gold.

The secret to compositing is the red wiggler. Red wigglers are the kings of composting worms.

These little creatures, which twitch when uncovered and exposed to light (hence their name), can eat up to half of their weight in organic material each day. Imagine having an army of red wigcont’d on page 12 ...

Composting options range from elaborate indoor worm bins to casual outdoor piles in a corner of the garden. You can invest as much time and effort as you want.

Expending very little effort can

reap huge rewards. Red wigglers will help every type of compost operation. They work tirelessly, munching away at your unwanted organic items, turning them into brown gold.

Where do you get red wigglers?

You can buy them, or you can seek out a composting friend who will

give you some.

Here are some things to remember when composting, especially in bear country. Feel free to compost kitchen scraps consisting of fruit and vegetable matter, coffee grounds and tea bags.

Egg shells are fine, but I rinse and crush mine before adding them to

the compost pile. Garden waste is also fair game, including dry grass, leaves, garden plants, even weeds. Avoid meat, bones and fish. Don’t add cooking oil, dairy products or wet grass. Always try to cover new materials with a bit of soil when adding them to the bin.

Composting is the ultimate recycling program. It encourages the natural process of decomposition and creates a usable, magical substance your garden will love. Red wigglers, the unsung heroes of composting, will work tirelessly for you. That is the secret to successful composting. n

y the time you’re reading this column, the paperback version of Eva Holland’s fascinating study of fear will be out from Penguin Canada for about $10 less than my copy. The hardcover is the one I read though, so it’s the one I’ve listed at the head of this column.

By the way, I think the paperback cover is much more evocative of Holland’s actual major issue.

Yes, it knocked her down when her mother died, and the huge spider on the cover of the original is something that most of us will react to, but the triggering event that made her decide to dig into this issue so deeply is her fear reaction to heights. The paperback illustration captures that perfectly.

I empathize with the height issue. It was one I didn’t really have until my mid-40s, when I moved to using graduated lenses in my glasses. Realizing that the problem stems from the optical distortion caused by looking down through the reading portion of the lens allows me to understand what’s happening to my sense of balance, but it doesn’t make the problem go away.

I don’t like ladders anymore and I take my glasses off when I have to change a light bulb. Thinking back to when I used to run all over the rock formations at Peggys Cove (they dropped the apostrophe a few years ago) and leap from one boulder to another, I know I wouldn’t dare now.

I actually identified more with the issues that came after Holland’s several vehicle accidents.

I’ve never had a rollover, but I’ve left the road a few times, and the scare I got inching my way down the glare ice on the Dome Road one early winter while touring

with one of our Berton House writers remains with me more than half a dozen years later.

Holland fills us in on all the incidents that left her with a kind of PTSD, but then she goes on to examine the science behind the feeling, accepts the reality that a certain amount of fear is hardwired into us, and investigates what things one might do to ameliorate what can become a debilitating problem.

- Meet Pasha! Pasha is a 3 year old, male Pyrenean Mountain Dog, which is a large breed guardiantype of dog, so he will need adequate space both indoors and out – preferably an acreage or farm. Because of his guarding instincts he is wary of strangers and has quite a big bark, and will need some time to warm up to new people, but once he does he loves pets and to play for short bursts. He is currently undergoing treatment for an ear infection, which is common for this breed and others who have big, floppy ears. He would do best with older children and while he’s adjusted to having other dogs around in our outdoor kennels, he might do better as an only dog. He may also be able to make friends with cats, as guardian breeds are quite gentle with those they view as part of their family.

Holland tried repetition, medication and counselling (with one of my daughter’s high school friends), but I think it was most important that she immersed herself in the topic, learning so much about it that she could produce this fascinating book, and could experience rational fear, which she concludes is absolutely essential, without going into panicked hyperdrive.

This was necessary for her to be able to pursue some of the adventurous subjects she has taken on as a writer.

Near the end she talks about not having to make her world smaller in order to be able to live in it. Overcoming our limitations is a worthwhile goal and this book underlines that point very well. n

Kate Alexander, Visitor Experience Product Development Officer at Kluane National Park and Reserve, managed the Thechàl Dhâl’ exhibit renewal project.

This is Kate’s first and last Parks Canada article for WUY as she has just retired in order to explore the Yukon, full time.

The beautifully renovated Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre in Kluane National Park and Reserve opens for the 2021 season Everything at the south end of Lhù�ààn Mân (Kluane Lake) is massive: the mountains, the lake, the dazzling wildflower meadows and the megafauna, including Dall’s sheep, moose and grizzly bears. Everything, that is, except Kluane National Park and Reserve’s diminutive Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre. But this hidden gem, usually dwarfed by its namesake mountain, now shines bright after a major renovation and exhibit renewal.

Open for the 2021 season as of May 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre is a 45-minute drive north of Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway. The new exhibits are big, bold and beautiful, like the surrounding landscape. Parks Canada and Kluane First Nation collaborated on the exhibits, with valuable input from Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, to tell stories that reflect the presence of Dań (Southern Tutchone people) on this lovely but challenging land.

Scientists from the Yukon and beyond have studied the bears, bees and birds of the valley; the rare plants that thrive here; and the extraordinary effects of nearby glaciers.

The indoor exhibits present Dań Key� (the people’s land) through maps, activities, stories and song. Learn about hunting and using all parts of Mäy (Dall’s sheep). Discover how to respect Big Grandfather (grizzly bear) and what might happen to you if you

displease him. Hear Diyet’s song of yearning for land lost, then regained. Admire superb beadwork by women of Kluane First Nation who are using the patterns of their grandmothers and creating their own.

2021 Exploration Season Update The Victoria Gold team is pleased to announce the exploration season at Dublin Gulch is now underway, with timelines ramped up earlier than planned due to favourable operating conditions, which will result in a longer, more intensive season for 2021.

The 2021 exploration program in the Dublin Gulch Raven Zone will allow for a minimum of 15,000 metres of diamond drilling and related exploration initiatives targeting the definition of a maiden gold resource on this rapidly emerging, high-grade, near surface gold deposit.

“Victoria Gold is excited to begin the 2021 exploration program at Raven,” says John McConnell, President & CEO of Victoria Gold Corp. “Last season’s work at Raven proved consistent gold mineralization across the zone, which extends well beyond the areas drill tested to date.

This season, we will build on that success with the aim of defining a meaningful maiden resource at Raven.”

Currently, there are four diamond drill rigs on site. In conjunction with this season’s extensive drilling program at Raven, a regional Dublin Gulch Gold Camp exploration program will include surface trenching, expanded soil geochemistry, detailed structural/geological mapping and prospecting.

Raven was first identified in 2018 with late season surface trench discoveries. Follow-up drilling repeatedly returned high-grade gold intersections accompanied by prolific visible gold occurrences along a major and consistently mineralized corridor, which has grown from a single trench to 750 metres of defined mineralized with significant expansion potential.

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens.
