The end of the line, the Arctic Ocean in Tuktoyaktuk Check out the May 12 issue of What’s Up Yukon for Part 1 of this story, or find it online on our website.

When a Canada 150 project resulted in a road linking Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, the shores of the Arctic Ocean were newly accessible. So too, then, were my plans to drive the length of the Dempster Highway.

y wife and I made plans to drive to Tuk and put our hands in the Arctic Ocean. We were tenderfeet, like those inexperienced souls who came to strike it rich in the gold fields. We wanted to mine the maximum of experiences, see the maximum amount of countryside, camping along the way. Unfortunately, we are not campers by any stretch of the imagination. My wife’s idea of roughing it is not having a place in the bathroom

Physical Description: In the Tarot card Justice, Major Arcana XI (in some decks, XIII), we encounter a figure seated on a stone throne in a place of great universal power, law and learning.

The figure’s face is both serene and intense. Their robes indicate wealth but are not flashy. They are

wearing a simple gold crown atop a classic bob haircut. In one hand, we see a sword, in the other hand she/he holds a set of balanced scales. There are stone pillars on either side of the throne. Between the pillars is a plum-coloured panel of fine cloth, velvet or heavy silk.

Golden light comes from behind the fabric panel. The atmosphere of the card is calm.

Metaphysical Description & Advice: At first, I was surprised by this card’s appearance in our summer love reading. Perhaps I was expecting something racier. Then I considered the depth of the connection between love and Justice.

In Tarot and Astrology, we talk about “rulerships”. The system of rulerships is a gorgeous web of interrelated planets and zodiac signs to which all objects, lifeforms, and entities have affiliations. For example, Venus rules our values and how we like to relate to others (and a lot of other things).

The Tarot card Justice is ruled by the astrology sign Libra, and therefore has quite a lot to say about seeking balance and fairness in love and in relationship. If you are seeking love this summer, start by being honest and fair with yourself about what you desire, then take this honesty and fairness into your courtship and love affairs.

Your values and legal matters will affect your approach to love.

Justice is clearly a huge theme in human interactions right now. Worldwide people are fighting for this very thing. This summer, love is not only about how you feel, but what your values are.

Balance is key. All things considered in 2021, if you seek more than one lover, honesty is extra important. The Justice card indicates less than honest dealings will lead to consequences. There is a big sword there, after all.

Legal matters and education are indicated by the Justice card. You may find love in an educational or academic environment. If your love life currently involves legal proceedings such as divorce, strive for fairness, consistency and balance. Justice can also indicate the legal side of getting married. the Interpretive Centre, 75 kilometres from the start. At a lookout just north of the Interpretive Centre there are great views of the Tombstone Mountains.

The gravel road is meant to be taken slowly. If you are going too fast, the road will tell you. If you are going too fast on washboard, the collection of wine glasses and coffee cups in the cupboard might not make it to the next stop in one piece.

The Arctic Circle is that imaginary line that demarcates the land of the midnight sun. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set in the summer, nor does it rise in the winter. For those of us who do not live in that situation, this was a novel experience. Surprisingly, there was no black dotted line on the ground, marking the Arctic Circle.

When I think of the Arctic, I think of tundra, flat expanses without trees. The Arctic Circle, at least the part that intersects the Dempster Highway, was not

like that at all. Yes, there was a distinct shortage of trees, but there were mountains rising up in the distance. It was not what I expected at all. Challenge your perceptions and go see for yourself.

There are many things to see along the Dempster Highway. The Dempster Highway Travelogue, produced by the Yukon government, was an invaluable resource.

There are things to look at, rock formations that march across the tops of mountains that look like elephants, or the remnants of a gold mine from years gone by.

There was breathtaking beauty around each corner.

Along the way, we learned the tragic history of the Lost Patrol and the North-West Mounted Police officer who solved the riddle of the missing men and their fate as they tried to travel from Fort MacPherson to Dawson City in December, and had the highway named after him.

Inuvik was an interesting place. We stopped at the North

Mart (think of Walmart, but in the North). You could buy anything from a snowmobile, or parka to groceries and hardware. The North Mart was across the street from the Igloo Church, which was closed, but we peered through the windows to try and get a glimpse inside.

The new road to Tuktoyaktuk, which means “Place of the Caribou,” snaked between ponds or small lakes of the Mackenzie Delta. Shrubs grew only knee-high.

Some of these were berry bushes.

Trees were scarce.

At last we reached the end of the road and found the Arctic Ocean. It was a cold day in August, the sky as grey as the water, and the wind pierced our fleece jackets. We made our way down to a sheltered place and put our hands in the water, which seemed warmer than the air temperature.

Traditionally, people dip their toes in the water. We are not going back to do it the right way. There are other roads to explore. n

ALONE TOGETHER AT WOOD STREET CENTRE How the MAD program’s original new play came together in the age of COVID

I

t’s no surprise to learn that the pandemic was a huge part of the inspiration behind Alone Together, a new original play by the Wood Street Centre’s Music, Arts and Drama (MAD) program.

With COVID consuming an entire year of everyone’s lives at this point, it seems almost natural for creatives to produce work that reflects the strangeness of these times, and the isolation that comes with being stuck in them.

The show centres around a home for children from all sorts of backgrounds who have found their own community and family with each other. An unnamed pandemic changes the lives of the children and they must learn how to navigate their new normality.

Yet another, less expected inspiration was the song “Freak on a Leash,” by ‘90s alternative metal act Korn, off their seminal 1998 breakthrough album Follow the Leader. Specifically, it was the scatted midsection of the song that caught the ear of MAD instructor Carolyn Westberg, as some of her students recount.

“Our director, Carolyn, really liked “Freak on a Leash” by Korn…

I’m pretty sure I’m telling this story right,” says Cadence Milford, a grade 11 student who plays Macy, a bubbly 11-year-old girl who is the youngest child in the home. “There’s one part that’s very primal and she imagined that as a kid picking up the phone and hearing their parent on the other end, and I think that inspired the entire show.”

Westberg came up with the concept and wrote the bones of the play, and then the students, who range from grade 10 to grade 12, fleshed out the script with additional scenes, according to Chris Thompson, a grade 12 student who plays Simon, one of the boys who has been at the home the longest, at 17 years old.

“He’s definitely had a very sheltered kind of life,” Thompson says of his character. “The home is very much away from the rest of the world.”

The students came up with their characters themselves and were taught certain exercises to learn how to get into character.

“Dave (Kanary, who teaches MAD along with Westberg) and Carolyn would make us choose an animal to use to symbolize our character,” explains Gabriel Hopkins, another grade 12 student, who plays Joey, an anxious know-it-all who obsessively studies his surroundings, and had a hard time connecting with the other kids when he arrived at the home. “Mine was a dolphin be-

Another method involves a similar approach but with a colour to symbolize each character rather than an animal. The students were also encouraged to pick a quirk for their character and play it up to the maximum, and carefully construct their characters’ movement styles and voices to suit their per-

sonalities.

While the students hail their instructors as excellent mentors and guides, they are also thankful for the control they are given and the capability the teachers believe they possess.

“They’re very confident in our ability to get stuff done,” Milford says, referring to Westberg and Kanary. “Almost everyday it’s just ‘okay, go get done what needs to get done.’ It’s nice.”

Because the program is legally

considered a cohort, the students don’t have to be masked or distanced during rehearsals, but when their choreographer comes in, that changes. The stage will also be further away from the audience than usual, meaning the students will have to project their voices even more and work harder to connect with the attendees.

Unfortunately, they are also not allowed to sing during the show, so the play is entirely spoken.

While the students are all writers and actors, they also each belong to one of four production teams: public relations, set, costumes and props. Milford, who reached out to What’s Up Yukon and set up our interview, is on the PR team, while Thompson is on set and Hopkins is on props.

“The costume team will get all the costumes for all the characters, the props team will make or find all the props, and the set team will literally build the entire set,” says Hopkins.

MAD’s Alone Together runs from June 2-6. The shows start nightly at 7 p.m., except for the June 6 show, which starts at 2 p.m. There is also an afternoon show on June 5 at 2 p.m., in addition to that evening’s performance. The students have reserved seats for their family members, and the remaining tickets will be available at the door.

FORAGING IN LOCAL MARKETS FOR CHEESE PIE MAKINGS At the end of April, after a halcyon week of blue skies and blazing sun, the weather in Whitehorse closed in. We had wind, we had snow, we had cold, bonebiting rain. The new grass just showing itself in the yard looked fed-up and dejected, as if it too were saying, “Come on, really?” The foraging season seemed to recede into the distance.

As for the gardening season, the very idea of young rhubarb pushing its fists out of the soil was laughable.

D

iscouraged by this dismal prospect, I bundled up and set off around town to forage in supermarkets and small shops for local and locally available foodstuffs to bring home and play with.

The first stop was Cultured Fine Cheese in the Horwood’s Mall for some Klondike Valley Creamery (KVC) cheeses. I had a cheese pie in mind; one I’d first tasted in Sweden years ago and recreated

using Canadian cheddar in place of the beloved Swedish cheese, Västerbottonsost. Why not try a Yukon cheese this time round?

I was in luck—KVC’s Kerrsdale cheddar and The Dutchman were in stock and I scooped up 200 grams of each, along with pickled cherries and green olives stuffed with orange peel for accompaniment (Cheese pie pairs well with tart, briny flavours). It was a slow moment in the store so owner

Next stop was Wykes’ Your Independent Grocer in search of local flour. Yes, local flour, in the Yukon. Wykes’ dropped this bombshell in a Facebook post on April 13, and Tum Tum’s Black Gilt Meats followed suit on April 15, both welcoming Hinterland Flour Mills products to their shelves. Trevor

love the market. You will see me frolicking through the market. Literally.”

Jeszika Mae is clearly looking forward to market season. In addition to loving the Fireweed Community Market, they also love to feed people.

Fortunately with their business, Bacon and Bonbons, they are feeding folks all the time. Sometimes Mae cooks for people in their homes, other times they’re catering to other businesses, such as The Coffee Shop, Java Connection and the Yukon Asian Market. In spring and summer, you’ll find their popup at the Fireweed Market in Shipyards Park.

Mae’s penchant for public markets began when they were living in Montreal’s West Island, where their favourite places were the Atwater and John Talon markets.

They came north for a summer job six years ago and never left.

They currently reside in a cabin and they also live in a yurt in the summer.

“It’s nice in the yurt,” they say.

“It’s like living in a seashell. You’ve just got the air and the wind sounds.

It’s beautiful.”

Mae’s journey from the Montreal suburbs to yurt life and a culinary business in the Yukon involved a few professional and personal twists and turns along the way.

Their interest in cooking began as a teenager when they were asked to replace the cook in the daycare where they and their mom worked. cont’d on page 11 ...

“It’s a shared experience [in a restaurant],” they say. “From my perspective as a chef, watching people enjoy that food is so nice, just to see people get energized from it.”

Mae also believes that enjoying food is more about taste and involves most of the senses, including touch. For example, she highly encourages eating steamed asparagus with one’s fingers.

Mae loved preparing food for kids, who were their first critics.

“Kids are such discerning judges of food,” they explain. “If you don’t shape it right or you don’t present it the right way, it doesn’t matter how it tastes, they’re not even looking at it.”

Cooking for kids didn’t set Mae on an immediate path to be a chef. They first aspired to be a lawyer and work in social justice, but were sidetracked by administrative jobs, which they loathed.

The decision to pursue what they loved to do led them to the Tourism Institute of Quebec to study the culinary arts.

Since then, they’ve worked in a number of settings including restaurants, which offered immediate feedback and appreciation

Mae currently works from a space in the Marwell industrial area which they share with Alison Pakula from Alligator’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese. In their workspace, Mae has a portable counter which she can roll into her van and take to any location, such as the market.

Mae enjoys the tranquillity they have found in the shared Marwell space. The flow they ex-

perience working there is like ballet, they say.

The day I visit, Mae has two types of macarons on the go.

There are basil and strawberry versions heading to The Coffee Shop, and ubé and black sesame ones destined for the Yukon Asian Market. The macarons, along with delectables such as baklava and marshmallows, represent the bonbons side of their business slogan: “Bacon and Bonbons – smoked meats and sweet treats.”

While the smoked meats production is currently on the back burner, Mae is still very enthusiastic about bacon.

“I don’t want to say bacon is bae, but I love bacon. Bacon is one of my staples and it’s so good in everything.”

They’ve had bacon produced for them by the Rudge family, who own Tum Tum’s Black Gilt Meats.

Mae procured pigs from Mario Ley at Can Do Farm and the Rudges made bacon based on Mae’s recipe. Three weeks later, they had their coffee, whisky and maple bacon.

“They’re such a lovely family, they’re such nice people to do business with,” Mae says of the Rudges, who are their go-to people for meat.

While bacon production is on hold, Mae still has lots to offer at the Fireweed Market. Among their offerings is mac-and-cheese to-go that folks can pre-order and pick up. Mae is also adept at improvisation. In the years before COVID, they arrived at the market with hamburger ingredients as a main dish, and shopped from fellow vendors, such as Elemental Farms, to make up the salads and other sides. However, don’t ask for ketchup for your burger.

“I’m anti-ketchup,” Mae says.

“Ketchup is not a food.”

Ketchup aside, Mae sees the market as a community that brings

the best out of everyone, including the vendors and the customers who support them.

“I’m not a fan of people but there are some persons I really love and a lot of them seem to congregate at the market,” they say. “The market brings out a part of society that’s not the mainstream, everyday way society runs. Market society is the way I see the world working.”

“The market is where it’s at,” they conclude.

artisanal products can be pricey for lots of good reasons (a small local market, the expense of production) so if times are tight, just substitute brand-name allpurpose flour and cheddar cheese and I promise, the results will be different but just as delicious.

KERRSDALE AND THE DUTCHMAN CHEESE PIE Cheese pie and a salad make a lovely spring supper. Another great option is to arrange slices of pie on a charcuterie platter with some olives, sour cherries, cheeses, sausage, crackers—you name it.

Ingredients Pastry • 1 cup all-purpose flour • ⅓ cup Hinterland Hard Red Spring Wheat Whole Grain Flour • ½ cup cold unsalted butter • 1 to 2 tbsp cold water Filling • 3 large Little Red Hen or other local eggs • 1 cup 35% cream or crème fraiche • 2 cups grated Klondike Valley Creamery Kerrsdale cheese • ½ cup finely diced Klondike Valley Creamery Dutchman cheese • 1 tsp finely ground black pepper • 1 tsp kosher salt Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 425F. 2. Whisk flours together. Cut butter into flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

only if the dough doesn’t clump together cohesively when you pinch it. Note that the dough will be crumbly even after the addition of water.

3. Transfer the dough into a 10inch flat-bottomed pie pan and press evenly into the bottom and up the sides. Prick the pastry with a fork and freeze for 10 minutes.

4. Bake shell on the bottom rack of the oven for 5 minutes, move it to the middle rack and bake 5 minutes more. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature.

5. For the filling, whisk eggs until light and creamy. Fold in crème fraiche or whipping cream, cheeses and salt and pepper. Pour into the cooled tart shell.

Tara Borin’s homage to The Pit

I

n Romance Capital, a poem from Tara Borin’s debut collection The Pit, something magical happens. I won’t spoil the surprise, but I will say the poem was partially inspired by a hunting tale, an impromptu moose-calling contest, and a guy riding a horse into a subarctic dive bar. All of these things were real-life events that happened in Dawson City’s infamous Westminster Hotel, more affectionately known as the Pit. Borin took those events and stitched them together to write Romance Capital. Their familiarity with the Pit runs deep. They draw the poems from the experiences they’ve had, and stories they’ve heard, while bartending there.

They also wrote the collection in one of the rooms above the bar, which the Westminster Hotel rents as studio space for artists. Borin says they were “very Pit-infused – I was working there, I was writing there.”

The slim volume contains 30 short poems arranged in sections called Beer Parlour, Rooms For Rent, The Regulars, The Hard Stuff and Last Call. The book can easily be read in one sitting, which is what I did at first, to get an overall impression. Then I returned to each poem and flagged the lines that most got me in the gut, or made me smile.

Although I enjoyed all the poems, the section with the most flags is called Regulars. It includes

Poet Tara Borin intimate portraits that are poignant and compassionate. One example is a poem called Dearest, which Borin says is about a person they deeply care about. The fellow requires a few pints to steady his hands, but he also sings tenor and plays crib for money.

Wishing they could take care of him beyond serving him drinks, Borin gently wonders “who he’d be / in a kinder timeline.”

A similar sentiment is shown in

a poem called Offering. One of the regulars, whose “drugstore reading glasses / tangle with a pair of sunglasses / pushed back over her faded hair,” tells the story of when “she had the skating rink / all to herself,” her arms float up to shoulder level, chapped fingers full of sudden grace.

Anticipatory Call for Proposals, REACHING HOME FUNDING The Government of Canada plans to provide Reaching Home with another $1.4 million to prevent and reduce homelessness in the Yukon.

Reaching Home will fund capital projects and service delivery projects for people experiencing precarious housing or homelessness.

The bartender sees the customer “made new” in the shared experience of a memory from kinder times.

Some of the Regulars are about a specific person, others are composites. Portrait of the Retired Barmaid pays tribute to two muchloved women who once worked at the bar, as well as to Borin’s grandmother, whose drink is rye and coke. All of the characters are finely drawn in these short poems.

Borin makes it possible for us to imagine the barmaid primping before her mirror, or the “bearfaced” water-witcher seated at the end of the bar with a “whisky at happy hour.”

Compared to the Klondikeera poems we’re familiar with, it seems that Borin’s poetry breaks ground by presenting a post-gold rush, post-Robert Service perspective of Dawson. Borin documents the struggles of the Pit dwellers – their addictions, disappointments, broken hearts and hangovers.

When I mention the significance of their more contemporary representation of Dawson, Borin agrees: “I often say there’s so much more to the Klondike than the gold rush.”

At the same time, they recognize that there are still new stories to be mined (sorry) from the Klondike Gold Rush, and Borin is about to embark on an alternative narrative. Their next project is a gold rush adventure novel featuring queer main characters. Borin is just getting started, and is hoping to have a rough draft sketched out

by September.

For now, Borin is enjoying the positive reception The Pit is receiving, and is “surprised and overwhelmed” by the response from the locals in Dawson.

“I guess a part of me thought ‘Well it’s poetry so how many people are going to read it?’” they say. “But Maximillian’s, here in town, when they got their shipment in, it sold out in a few hours.”

“It’s such a nice feeling having it out there and people reacting to it and having feelings about it. It’s pretty cool.”

And how about The Pit? Will Borin ever grow weary of going there?

“No, I never get tired of the Pit,” they say. “It’s my second home.”

... OF THE ANNUAL SPRING BIRDATHON When Mary Whitley went bird-watching up the Fish Lake Road recently, she knew she’d likely see bald eagles. She didn’t expect to witness raptors in rapture.

“I

saw a bald eagle come flying in, quite low, and I watched it fly over to a tree that was mostly dead, on the hillside, where there was another eagle. And they proceeded to copulate! There’s a lot of wing flapping, I’ll tell you, when eagles copulate. Oh my word! I mean, that was a sight. I’d never seen that before. I mean how often do you get to see eagles mating?”

It’s moments like these that make bird-watching a thrill, even for a veteran birder like Whitley, who’s been at it for decades both in the Yukon and in other parts of Canada and the world.

Being out there constantly, in bird habitat, can bring surprises.

She remembers a time hiking the Sheep Creek Trail in Kluane country and being amazed by two

thrushes, Townsend’s Solitaires, who were trying to impress a female.

“The males would fly up and sing and sing and sing and fly around in circles and sing and sing. And it’s a beautiful, beautiful song, “ she recalls. “They’re ordinary-looking birds — until they fly — and they’ve got these translucent, pale yellow tail feathers that you can’t see until they’re flying. Beautiful birds.”

These kinds of experiences could be in store for participants in the upcoming annual Helmut Grunberg Yukon Birdathon. Whitley has been named Feature Birder in the event, a 24-hour birding marathon that takes place every year on the last weekend in May. From 5 p.m. Friday, May 28 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 29, birders will head out to identify as many different species as they can.

They’re encouraged to go by their own power - foot, bike or paddle.

Participants can get sponsored per species or they can sponsor Whitley, as the Feature Birder. The event is the main fundraiser for the Yukon Bird Club, supporting educational and bird conservation activities such as birding field trips, the Christmas bird count and scholarships for students committed to environmental conservation.

Whitley has taken part in almost every birdathon since the first one in 1986. “I think the value of the birdathon is that you might stretch yourself somehow. You’ll

do something or go somewhere or learn something you didn’t know before.”

She remembers one birdathon when she and a friend had stopped to rest while walking the Takhini salt flats. “And a peregrine falcon flew in and landed on a dead tree like right in front of us. We looked at each other and went “That bird has huge feet!’ And they’re bright yellow! So that’s the last thing their prey would see — is these huge yellow feet coming at them!” she says. “It sat there for the longest time. Then it went off to kill something.”

She believes one reason the bird lingered is that she and her friend were practicing good birding behaviours. It’s important to wear subdued, earthy colours (not whites or brights), to move slowly, speak softly and avoid sudden gestures, she says.

Beginner birders, Whitley says, can increase their chances of identifying birds by learning in advance about a few species they’re most likely to see. The bird club lists the species of Whitehorse, Dawson City, Faro, Watson Lake, Herschel Island and the entire Yukon on checklists that can be found at yukonbirds.ca. It also reports on the 139 species observed in last year’s birdathon. You can pick a few and learn how to identify them using online resources such as allaboutbirds.org, with apps such as Merlin or Sibley, or with field guide books.

The best places to bird around Whitehorse include Schwatka Lake, the McIntyre Creek wetlands, Lewes Marsh, Haeckel Hill, Mary Lake, Wolf Creek, M’Clintock Bay, the Quartz Road wetlands, and the Millennium and Yukon River trails, according to the bird club’s publication, Birding in Whitehorse. Great birding spots in other parts of the Yukon include Nares Lake, Wye Lake, the Dezadeash River, Teslin Lake, the Dempster Highway, and the La Biche River.

Whitley says, however, you don’t have to go far to find birds.

She now has limited mobility, and plans to bird this year by doing a “big sit” in one or more places.

She says the most important tool, for any birder, is binoculars.

“Always carry your binoculars.

You’re going shopping, bring your

binoculars,” she says, adding they should be out and not in your pack. That means you’re always ready for the surprises birds bring, no matter where you are. She and her late husband, Gerry, spotted “one of the nicest birds we ever saw,” a scarlet tanager, outside a Belize airport while waiting for a flight home. “When I lived in Hillcrest, we had a picture window in the front and one in the back of the house. I’d have my binoculars on my body, in the house, because there were sometimes birds in the front and birds in the back. So, carry your binoculars!”

ESG – Earth Day 2021 Clean Up As the snow began its retreat in April, and in the spirit of Earth Day 2021 and Victoria Gold’s commitment to the environment, several members of the Eagle Gold Mine team, led by VP Operations and General Manager Dave Rouleau, collectively tidied up the outside area surrounding the camp’s administration offices.

“Thank you to Dave Rouleau, and the site’s administrative team, for continually contributing to better practices at the Eagle Gold Mine,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “Spring clean ups at site, and throughout the Yukon, are something we can all do to help preserve our valued environment.”

Eagle Gold Mine staff teamed up to tidy the area surrounding the camp’s administration building in the spirit of Earth Day 2021.
