andscapes. There is probably no other subject that has inspired so many painters in the Yukon. Every artist brings to their work a particular perspective that informs their style and distinguishes their landscapes from those of other artists. Virginia Wilson, whose exhibit Travels with a Sketchbook is currently showing at Yukon Artists @ Work (YA@W), approaches landscapes with a background in geography. In discussing the significance of her academic education to her landscape practice, Wilson says it’s similar to having specialized knowledge in anatomy when drawing or painting the human figure. “What I have is a background in the anatomy of the landscape, because I have a smattering of all the earth sciences,” she explains. When one has such a background, Wilson says, “You look at a landscape in a completely different way. You’re looking for shapes in the rocks, structures, vegetation zones…the way water moves…the way it meanders around.” At the centre of the exhibit are several sketchbooks with watercolour drawings of places where Wilson has lived and visited. She created most of these scenes on paper en plein air, working outdoors directly with the landscape. Many were later used as references for acrylic paintings that Wilson completed in her studio. The gallery walls include some recent acrylic landscapes, with scenes of the Yukon including downtown Whitehorse, Miles Canyon, Fish Lake and others. There are also panels featuring reproductions of selected watercolour sketches which are used to illustrate and illuminate Wilson’s artistic process and development.

Virginia Wilson works on her Quill Creek painting in Yukon Artists @ Work gallery For example, one panel demonstrates how she first began creating watercolour sketches while on a trip to Alaska. For these first efforts, she used a pen to draw the scene, then filled it in with watercolour. This took hours, because she used the pen ink to create effects such as shading. Later, for a trip to the Grand Canyon, she turned the method around and started with watercolours. This allowed her to work quickly to apply the washes before the spectacular light and colours of the canyon scene disappeared. Then she used the pen to create lines and distinguish forms. This technique was faster and much more efficient, and she’s used it ever since. Another panel shows how Wilson discovered that Crayola

crayons could be used to create lines. When ink wouldn’t work because the wash was still wet, Wilson grabbed her granddaughter’s black crayon to make lines instead. The on-the-spot improvisation proved successful. The method became part of Wilson’s ongoing practice, so that she was buying boxes and boxes of crayons just to get the black ones (she can now buy black separately). A third panel demonstrates Wilson’s use of both sketches and photography as references for her final paintings. Photographs are certainly useful, but often fail to reproduce the desired composition or the subtleties of light and colour. This is evident in an acrylic cont’d on page 3 ...

painting of Quill Creek which is a work-in-progress in the gallery. Wilson explains how the watercolour sketch she’s using for reference reflects the brilliant turquoise water and river beauty flowers on the creek banks. These elements don’t come through in the reference photograph. The photograph also fails to convey the emotional response to the landscape, or the “sense of drama” which Wilson captured in her sketch. Through her watercolours, she can recreate the feeling of being overwhelmed by looming mountains, or awed by the depth of a gorge. The sketches also allow for some “artistic license”; for example, Wilson will move mountains over a little to allow for a feature in the foreground to be highlighted. “Mount Lorne sometimes gets nudged over a bit,” she admits. If you visit the exhibit, you probably won’t notice where Wilson has moved mountains. However, you will learn about her artistic journey as a landscape painter. Give yourself time to read through the panels and browse through the sketchbooks. That way, you can fully appreciate the transformation of the watercolour sketches into their final acrylic counterparts. Travels with a Sketchbook is showing until May 29. Wilson will be painting in the gallery every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:30 am to 2 pm for the duration of the show. You can also check out her webpage at avwilson.com. n

nnie Johnsgaard’s lovely (inventive, often amusing) ever-changing chalk murals brighten the walls of Yukonstruct Cospace, where she works. Here’s what she has to say about her latest temporary piece.

Artist Statement:

“For me this drawing shows the peace that comes in transience and change. Drawn in chalk, three swans tangled in a triquetra are falling in front of an ambiguous sun or moon. “The nature of the medium makes this piece temporary. It will only exist for a month and then will be wiped away and replaced with another image. “The triquetra is an interlaced symbol of three that’s meant many things to different cultures at different times. Possibly stolen, possibly shared, it’s been

a symbol of maiden, mother and crone. It’s been life, death, rebirth. Mind, body, spirit. Land, sea, sky. Past, present, future. The heart of it is constantly changing depending who you talk to. “I’ve also been watching the swans this month - cherishing the brief time that they’re here and appreciating them for leaving a place when it no longer suits them. Nothing about this piece is expected to be here long, but it can be colourful and whimsical while it lasts.” n

020 wasn’t a great year for any international event. With travel bans and gathering limits imposed due to the pandemic, events like the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay (KCIBR) were practically off the table, especially because of how suddenly COVID-19 gripped the world. While not everything is back to normal, KCBIR is technically still happening this year, though things will look very different. The event has become a virtual version of itself, so it can work within guidelines. Instead of the typical relay from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska, this year’s KCBIR will be a ride people can attend from their backyards or neighbourhoods. “It’s not a race,” said coordinator Mia Lee. “It’s an event.” This year, the board of direc-

Riders can ride on any road surface they like, including gravel, mountain bike trails or the road, and take on as many legs as they want. Teams are also allowed as long as their members follow their local guidelines. The racers will all be connected virtually, racing together in all but physical location. In order to mimic what the race is normally like, the virtual version will consist of eight legs for a total of 240 Racers at the kilometres. 2019 KCIBR “This can be done anywhere in the world since it’s virtual.” The 2021 edition of the KCIBR will take place from June 12 to June 20. Registration is $20, and can be done through the relay’s website. Registration starts on May 7. It’s unclear what the turnout will be like for a virtual version of the KCIBR, which usually fills up in 10 days and consists of roughly 1,200 riders. Despite the uncertainties, Lee and the other board members have enjoyed the challenge of adapting an event like this to a virtual format. “We just want to celebrate riding bicycles,” said PHOTO: Courtesy of Mia Lee Lee. “We want to get people race would require us to develop a (just for this year) e-bikes. It’s back in the saddle and back outwhole new route and have COVID still an outdoor event though, so side.” For more info and registration, measures in place, which would indoor bikes like trainers will not visit kcibr.org. n take a great deal of planning,” be permitted. tors for KCIBR realized the relay wouldn’t happen in its usual format because the borders remain closed between Canada and the U.S.A. Rather than postpone the event again, the board decided to change it up for the year, putting together what would end up being an entirely different event. “The idea of posting a modified

THE POWER OF ART

with

Julie Jai and David Trick

Julie Jai and David Trick are the co-founders of the Yukon Prize for Visual Arts. (www.yukonprize.ca)

A conversation with Victoria Fred (Tut.Latseen)

R

ecently we met with Victoria Fred (lawyer, art lover and collector, and dancer and drum carrier for the Dakhká Khwáan) to discuss what collecting art means to her. Victoria is Tlingit from the Gaanaxtei.di Clan and a citizen of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.

PHOTOS: Courtesy of Victoria Fred

What art do you collect? I began collecting art in the late 1980s when I lived in the Northwest Territories. Over the last 15 years I have focused on acquiring pieces from Yukon First Nation artists. My collection of Yukon First Nation art includes paintings from Jackie Olson (Tr’ondëk Hwech’in First Nation), Jean Taylor (Daklaweidi) from Teslin Tlingit Council, Shirley Adamson (Daklaweidi) from Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, and lifelike sketches created by my brother Clifton Fred (Gaanaxtei. di) from the Kwanlin Dün First Nation. I am equally proud to bring into my home carvings created by young and inspiring Tlingit artists, Jared Kane (Gaanaxtei.di) from Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and Calvin Morberg (Daklaweidi) from Teslin Tlingit Council. I particularly like to support Yukon First Nation artists because I view my collection as a way of investing in our First Nation communities. I enjoy collecting from Yukon First Nation artists who grow through their art, strive for excellence, challenge themselves, tell stories in their pieces and take pride in the journey. It’s all so very inspiring.

Victoria Fred and her daughter Sabrina, in regalia

What do you mean when you say art tells a story? Most, if not all, of the pieces that I have collected or commissioned have a story of sorts. Whether it is the picture of Sedna, the Inuit Sea goddess and caretaker of marine life, or the painted regalia apron I commissioned from Jared Lutchman (Gaanaxtei. di) Carcross/Tagish First Nation where the image connects me to my ancestral homelands of Marsh Lake and to the woodworm story (Gaanaxtei.di first potlatch), highlighting the importance of my daughter, the next generation. Then there are those pieces where the image and story continue to give in so many ways. I have a charcoal sketch brought to life by Shirley Adamson. As a history major who went on to study law, I find this particular piece relays the complexities of a clashing society and competing cultures, and it raises questions about justice during the turn of the 20th century. The piece reflects the 1898 hanging of two Gaanaxtei.di men, Jim and Dawson Nantuck (Raven moiety). The beauty of the piece is the transformation of the Gaanaxtei.di man as his Raven spirit leaves his body in the piece, and also what the discovery of this story in 2000 meant for my particular family. Through the discovery of the Nantuck remains in Dawson City in 2000, the story raised questions and stimulated efforts within my family to revitalize our Tlingit stories and Gaanaxtei.di ties. One piece of art that I recently commissioned from Lumel Studios represents an important childhood memory of family, community harvest and the love of salmon. This piece is one of my absolute favorites. Using the smoothness and good energy of blown glass, it shows what the salmon represent for Tlingit and for all Yukon First Nations: sustenance and teachings and the generosity of the Southern Tutchone people. The power of art ... cont’d person’s spirit and their whole energy. This is one of the joys I have when I see my daughter in her regalia or dancing a headdress. For these reasons I am forever grateful for the strength, passion and commitment of the late Doris McLean and her daughter Marilyn Jensen, whose efforts have made it possible for children, young people and their families to grow through the work of the Skookum Jim Dancers and the Dakhká Khwáan.

Glass salmon sculpture, by Lumel Studios piece I hold close to my heart. It reminds me of my time as a little girl watching my uncle Alfie gaff salmon at Klukshu. This was when salmon was plentiful. Today there are hardly any salmon. The piece reminds me that salmon is life. It didn’t just feed us, but was also used to pass traditional teachings. I recall my Aunt Dianne telling me that elders used to hang fish ears on babies’ ears to give them special qualities like the ability to be good listeners. The glass salmon reminds me of these stories and our coming together as a community but also of the changes to the environment.

What is the connection between art and regalia? Regalia is a storyboard. It identifies who we are, as a member of a clan, a community, as a people, our place in society, our identity. There are protocols relating to regalia. For example, as a Gaanaxtei.di, I need to be careful not to wear emblems that belong to other clans of the Raven moiety within the Tlingit Nation. As a Raven (Yéil), I also cannot wear emblems that belong to my opposite, those who belong to the Gooch (Wolf) clans. I view regalia as living art, where the spirit of the art comes alive. And regalia can transform a

How is art powerful? Art invites conversation. For example, someone may ask about the special beadwork on my moccasins, or about the healing totem pole at the foot of Main Street in Whitehorse, which represents a point in time when Yukon First Nations began reclaiming space and elevating the celebration of our identity and culture. Art has power and energy. I always believe that art carries a part of the energy and spirit of the hands and heart that creates the piece. I have had experiences where art pieces can carry a strong draw, a strong positive energy – that makes you want to be around them all the time. The Raven/Frog piece I acquired from Jared Kane has such energy. I always smile and feel good when I say good morning to it at my office. Art continues to inspire me. In particular Yukon First Nation art and the artists themselves continue to inspire me and make me more hopeful for the future. When I reflect back of the experiences of my grandmother’s generation and the limitations imposed on our culture and communities, on our potlatch systems, the inability to sing our songs or speak our language, I see Yukon First Nation carvers as storytellers who are aware of our history, but have used their gifts as doorways to celebrate our stories, our identity and have elevated our culture to new heights, unapologetically. n

Instructions Thaw the frozen shrimp ahead of making this recipe. Cook your jasmine rice in a rice cooker or pot, following the directions on the back of the package. Set aside. In a large pot on medium to low heat, melt coconut oil and empty both bags of frozen vegetables into the pot. Once the vegetables have thawed and are starting to soften, add the thawed peeled shrimp into the pot and continue cooking until the shrimp and vegetables are cooked through. At this point, add the cooked rice, canned coconut milk, salt and green curry paste and mix thoroughly. Continue stirring for one or two

minutes until everything is hot, turn off the burner and serve. Makes 6 servings. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Total time: 40 minutes

Substitutions:

Variations:

• Shrimp substitutions: instead of using shrimp, you could also use either chicken breast (or tofu if you are avoiding animal products).

• Make this recipe vegan: omit the shrimp, and replace with tofu for added protein. • Make this recipe lower carb: replace the jasmine rice with konjac rice or noodles. You could also use spiralized zucchini noodles for the base of this dish. Both of these can be found at most local grocery stores.

• Coconut oil substitutions: instead of using coconut oil, you can use any other type of oil or butter.

• Jasmine rice substitutions: you can also use basmati rice, long grain rice, brown rice etc. This recipe would also be great with white or brown rice noodles. • Green curry paste substitutions: instead of using green curry paste, you could swap it out for red curry paste. n

RACING THE CLOCK

Water quality sampling in the Dezadeash Wetlands

T

he sound of inflation bags wheeze in the morning as the packrafts slowly take form. The pile of monitoring gear is prepared to be loaded into the rafts. Today, Parks Canada staff will be collecting water quality samples of the Shadhäla Chù/Dezadeash River and wetland complex in Kluane National Park and Reserve. Once the first sample is taken, the clock starts. Water sampling in the North can be

tricky; to get accurate results, our samples have to make their way to a lab in Vancouver to be analyzed within three days. But even before we start sampling, our day is already interwoven with the story of water’s passage. Mornings are different for everyone, but likely, teeth are brushed, the shower runs, the toilet flushes, the kettle or coffee pot is filled, dishes are washed. According to 2017 data from Statistics Canada, the average daily residential use of water in the Yukon was 383 litres per person per day. Few of us think about where that water goes after using it. In the Village of Haines Junc-

tion, the water makes the journey from the pipes of homes to the wastewater treatment facility located south of the village. After undergoing treatment, the water is discharged periodically to free up volume in the facility, returning to the natural system that crosses invisible boundaries of village land, settlement land and national park. Water quality is an important component of the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Kluane National Park and Reserve is 22,000 square kilometres of mostly vast icefields and tall mountains, but also of boreal forest, alpine tundra, wide river valleys and wetlands. The Dezadeash

River, which meanders across the traditional territory of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, flows into the park, ultimately joining the Kaskawulsh River to form the Alsek, a designated Canadian Heritage River. Wetlands are biologically diverse systems that enhance water quality and provide habitat and sanctuary for species such as wood frogs and migratory birds. The Dezadeash wetlands span across an estimated 30 square kilometres of channels large and small, with water seeping across waves of grass. Swans and other migratory birds can be typically found using this landscape as a rest stop or refuge before pushing

further north, while others call it home for the summer. Parks Canada collects water samples of this river system at six sites, twice per season, once prior to discharge from the water treatment facility to gain a baseline of that year, and a second time after discharge to see the possible influences of the treated effluent. Monitoring yields information including temperature, pH, total and dissolved metals, and nutrient levels. To determine the best spots to sample, we turned to an unexpected helper. ucts we consume (even in most toothpastes) and can be detected in very low concentrations. Since they don’t occur naturally, artificial sweeteners act as a unique tracer, showing us how the discharge moves through the wetlands and helping to inform sampling locations. Results from the water sampling are shared with partnering organizations to ensure that a high standard of water quality is maintained. Parks Canada works with the Village of Haines Junction, Environment Yukon, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and researchers from the University of Waterloo and Western University in monitoring the overall health of the wetlands and greater Dezadeash River. The methodical rhythm of

Dezadeash River running towards the Kluane front ranges

plunging paddles moves us closer to the next site as we follow the path of the water. The continual hum of nature is interrupted by the flight of two large trumpeter swans honking at our presence. With the final squeal of the Nalgene lid, the last sample bottle is closed. Ice packs are jammed into the cooler, as the water is prepped to make its last leg in its sampling journey. This evening, the water will travel to Whitehorse, and by tomorrow morning will be taking flight, travelling in ways that we are currently unable to, while the remaining river water runs across the B.C. and U.S. borders, passing glacier after glacier, eventually consumed by the Gulf of Alaska. The only rule that water seems to obey is that of gravity, as it ripples and eddies, ignoring our boundaries and our deadlines. n

Whitehorse’s canoe and kayak rental companies are shifting their focus to the local market for a summer without tourists

C

ompared to some other parts of the country and the world, things are looking pretty good for the Yukon this summer. While COVID restrictions

and gathering limits are still in place, there’s still a lot to do, and getting outside for recreational activities is one of the best things Yukoners should be taking advantage of this summer. But for companies like Kanoe People, Up North Adventures and Yukon Wide Adventures, border closures can spell out uncertainty for their businesses. Summer recreation in the Yukon relies heavily on the tourism industry, and without tourists being able to visit the territory, the owners of these businesses must turn their focus towards locals, and hope that there will be enough interest to keep them afloat.

Tsuki is a 2 year old, female Alaskan Husky who, although at first is timid of new people and surroundings and may take a long time to settle in, once she warms up, is very sweet and loves pets! Watch out though, this little escape artist will look for a fence to jump or squirm through a hole if she can. She would do best in a home without children but, with proper introductions, should be fine with dogs or cats. If you are interested in adopting Tsuki, please fill out an online application at https:// humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/tsuki If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 6336019 to put your application towards her.

Canoeing this summer? ... cont’d from page 14

been incredible so far, and his season has started off with a bang, which was a pleasant surprise. In focusing more on the local market, Kanoe People will be offering half-day local guided trips, with the hope that people will get confident enough to go out and explore on their own afterwards. Mark Stenzig, who owns Up North Adventures has had a similar experience, as his company is selling canoes and kayaks to locals on a regular basis already. “We’re seeing a very strong uptake with the local market spending money locally,” he said. Up North Adventures will be operating on its regular hours through the summer, open six days a week. Thomas de Jager is the owner of Yukon Wide Adventures. He said he is less optimistic about locals buying canoes and kayaks,

because so many people have them already, or can just borrow from friends. He has also noticed that locals are not as interested in guided tours, and groups from Ontario, Quebec and other places will not be making it up this year, giving him no reason to sink his time and energy into trying to make the tours happen. Instead, he is looking to other streams of income to get by this summer, including ATV and quad rentals, and his usual gig supplying race boats to the River Quest. “Luckily, compared to most of the other tourism businesses, we don’t rely 100 per cent on tourists,” said de Jager. The River Quest has been won with de Jager’s boats for the last four years, making Yukon Wide Adventures the go-to for race boats in the Yukon. While

this year’s River Quest will be a smaller affair than usual, without national and international teams coming up to compete, supplying boats to the local racer will still be a big contract for Yukon Wide Adventures. “I invested lots of money in high-end race boats which are built in Estonia and Europe,” de Jager explained, adding that he also ships the boats nationally for racers to use for training. The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce’s new Buy Local Program encourages Whitehorse residents to spend their money on local businesses, as they need the support now more than ever. Stenzig said Up North Adventures has seen tremendous benefits from locals show support the in-

Yukon Wide Adventures owner Thomas de Jager with his boat collection itiative and make an effort to buy from businesses like his. Additionally, the shutdown of the tourism industry goes two ways. Stenzig said that while tourists won’t be able to come to the Yukon, Yukoners also won’t be able to fly to other parts of the country or the world to visit family or take summer vacations, creating an opportunity for businesses like his to capitalize on the fact that most everybody will be around all summer and itching to get out and do things. “People are wanting to get out on the water and enjoy what the Yukon has to offer,” Stenzig said, “which is a lot.”

McDougall echoed a similar sentiment, saying he has noticed an increased desire amongst Yukoners to explore the territory this summer, especially with their typical vacation and travel budgets collecting dust. “We live in such a beautiful part of the world,” he said. “A lot of locals are discovering their own Yukon—their own backyard. They’re getting out and doing things they’ve never done and going places they’ve never been.” For more information on these three local businesses, visit their websites at kanoepeople.com, upnorthadventures.com and yukonwide.com. n
