Local musicians Keitha Clark and Graeme Poile donated the proceeds from their new EP to Whitehorse’s Community Outreach Van

n St. Patrick’s Day, Keitha Clark and Graeme Poile released their new EP, Now is a Far Country, a collection of original Celtic tunes. The fiddle-based songs were composed mostly in 2020, and recorded live off the floor at Old Crow Recording Studio with audio engineer

The goal was to capture the subtle lyricism of an Irish session and combine it with the spaciousness of the northern landscape, as per the EP’s press release.

“Graeme and I both really like playing Celtic music,” Clark told What’s Up Yukon. “This project has also really allowed me to support the community as well.”

The duo decided to centre a charity fundraiser around the release of Now is a Far Country, with donations going to the Blood Ties Four Directions’ Community Outreach Van. The van provides the Yukon’s vulnerable population with goods including warm winter clothing, hygiene products and naloxone kits, as well as services such as harm reduction and overdose prevention education, and even needle disposal and pickup.

The musicians and the staff of Blood Ties Four Directions were blown away by the success of the fundraiser. They raised more than $1,500 the first day, and are now sitting around the $2,000 mark.

“I love all the great work that the Outreach Van does in our community,” said Clark. “It seemed like a really hands-on thing to be able to support.”

Clark hadn’t worked with the Outreach Van before, but because she lives downtown, she would often see it in her neighbourhood, and knew it was an organization she wanted to be able to support in some way. Using her artistry to give back to the community and help people in need was a logical use for her talents. Clark also said the Outreach Van has seen an increase in demand for its services since the pandemic hit.

“All the work they do to distribute harm prevention kits and nursing, and just the social network they provide for people, especially during the pandemic, is really important.”

Clark said she is grateful for the support she and her music has received from the Yukon community, and wants to be able to give it back and pass it on in a meaningful way.

After releasing a bigger album

last spring, Clark wasn’t expecting to put out another recording project so soon, but she and Poile received some funding from Jazz Yukon that really got the ball rolling, she said. Before settling down in the Yukon, Clark lived in Halifax in her early 20s, and was taken by the east coast’s strong Celtic music scene and artistic culture, since she had been playing Celtic music since her teenage years.

“I just really loved the culture, the music and the energy

Now, playing this kind of music makes Clark feel nostalgic for her time on the east coast, reminding her of the times she had and the friends she made. She said she is lucky to live in the Yukon now, as it is another place with a strong

musical and artistic community.

“We have many great music scenes up in the Yukon,” she said.

“We’ve had some really great Irish music sessions up here too.”

3. Even if people were willing to do that, how ecologically responsible is it to drive to a meeting that could easily be held online?

4. People with mobility or other health issues can worship and serve

well, live streaming has the ad vantage of including anyone from anywhere who would like to attend (and who never would have made the trip to a service in person, even pre-COVID. 10. When it comes to continuing education, there has been an astonishing array of events featuring scholars that I, for one, would never have taken the time and money to travel for, but are available right in my living room. I’ve listened to countless first-class webinars while polishing furniture and chopping vegetables. What’s not to like about that?

11. And finally, speaking of my living room, attending all these things in my pyjamas with the coffee pot beside me warms my introvert’s heart.

Of course it’s not like being in person. And there are definite downsides. I know it’s very hard on extroverts, who need human contact. And we ALL need human contact.

I find myself embarrassed, though, that until now I hadn’t truly considered the people whose needs prevented them from in-person gatherings. On-line gathering truly is more inclusive and more attentive to the whole community.

Some day soon we’ll be back gathering without restrictions.

At least I imagine that’s true. For now, though I’m playing the glad game. Online options are more inclusive and ecologically sound.

8. When it comes to worship, we at WUC now have regular participants from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Arkansas, Australia and parts of western Canada. I assume

hen I was a little girl, someone gave me a children’s book about Pollyanna. She always played what she called “the glad game.” No matter what the circumstances, Pollyanna tried to find something to be glad about.

My mom read that book to me over and over. I can still see the illustrations in my mind. And then mom and I would play that same game with whatever was going on in our own lives. Apparently it made a pretty big impact because I still do that.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am, to say the very least, not technologically adept. Perhaps that’s partly generational (although many of my age cohort are competent and at ease in the tech world) and partly a natural technophobia, but I’ve been dragged, kicking and screaming into things technological. When it comes to things computer-related, I have a hard time playing the glad game.

This far into the pandemic, however, I’ve taken my old Pollyanna hat and put it back on, even for technology. And so, what I’m writing about in this column are the benefits and blessings of technology that I’ve discovered in the last year. I’m a clergywoman, so this is in some ways specific to my job, but can easily be more broadly applied.

Here’s what I’ve discovered about meeting and worshipping online.

1. It’s easier for people who live at a distance from the church.

Folks who work in town and commute several kilometres don’t want to do that again on weekends any more than necessary.

2. Evening meetings in person are problematic for the same reason. Do they stay in town over the supper hour to attend a 7 p.m. meeting? Drive home and back again? More likely they just won’t attend at all.

Yukon Provisions is a new collaborative space for local food entrepreneurs Yukon Provisions had its official launch on Wednesday, March 31.

The business collective is made up of four local food sellers, each bringing wholly different foods to the collaborative space. One is Yukon Chocolate Company, owned

by Sydney Oland, the mastermind behind Yukon Provisions.

Oland said she is optimistic and excited about the summer to come and is already looking at expanding Yukon Provisions in the future.

“The farmer’s market is always such a great experience,” she said. “Especially with the opportunity to collaborate with the team at the factory. I hope that we can expand our hours and offer more retail options to our customers.”

OPEN FOR TAKE OUT SERVICE for Yukon Provisions because she wanted a way for businesses to thrive in the face of unaffordable commercial rental spaces in Whitehorse. Bringing together a team of fellow food-based businesses to share a space seemed like the perfect solution. A year ago at the start of the pandemic shutdowns, she got to work transforming Fred’s Plumbing showroom into a food factory to fit her vision.

Joining Oland in Yukon Provisions are Anne’s Dumplings, Landed Bakehouse and Daddy’s Donuts. Anne’s Dumplings is a new business, recently opened

by Chinese-born British Canadian Anne Huang, who set out aiming to bring authentic Chinese dumplings to Yukoners after graduating from Yukonstruct’s Entrepreneur Bootcamp last December. Foodbased entrepreneurship is a new field for Huang, but with her background in fashion industry PR and marketing, and her passion for the food she grew up eating, she has the necessary skills to transfer.

“I’m looking forward to scaling up production to provide more dumplings for Yukoners, using local ingredients,” said Huang.

“I’m excited to see what the future may hold for everyone at the factory.”

Landed Bakehouse, headed up by baker Michael Roberts, is a bakery specializing in artisanal sourdough loaves Roberts makes with his own freshly-milled flour.

He also takes inspiration from his British heritage to create unique Anglo-Yukon treats including Scotch eggs, pasties and sausage rolls, all using fresh local produce.

Rounding out the crew is Daddy’s Donuts, a venture of local musician Alex Johnston, known for his work as part of The Midnight Sons. He’s returned to churning out his yeasted donuts after a brief hiatus, and is ready to un-

veil even more flavours, such as mocha-stuffed chocolate-glazed donuts, honey twists and banana pudding.

Yukon Provisions is located at 8-151 Industrial Road. It is currently open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., but its team hopes to expand its hours soon.

They will also be operating at this summer’s Fireweed Market at Shipyards Park on Thursday evenings. While Yukon Provisions is still in its infancy, its future is looking bright.

“We’ve only just opened our doors to retail one day a week but I’m excited to see what opportunities this brings and what Landed Bakehouse can offer to locals,” said Roberts.

idea was horrifying. Luckily, that wasn’t the case for us, and your dad never had to leave my side as you were born.

My love, one day you will learn all about how 2020 affect-

ed people. How it caused many to lose their jobs, including your dad, for a time. You’ll learn about the fear and death it caused all over the world. You’ll hear all about the toilet paper shortages

and how difficult it was to find cleaning supplies, medicine and baby products. People will go on and on about how long it was until they were able to go to a mall or eat in a restaurant. And you’ll no

remember it well. I was sitting in a restaurant in downtown Whitehorse with your dad, Oompa and Grammie, eagerly waiting to ring in the year 2020.

It was New Year’s Eve and I was about three months pregnant with you. We had just announced you to the world a few weeks earlier and the new year held so much promise. We were so excited for what 2020 would bring to our family. It was going to bring you, my love, into our lives, and we couldn’t wait!

There were so many plans in place for when you arrived. Your Auntie Judy was going to fly in from Ontario to help set up your nursery. Your grandparents were booking flights to come visit too, so they could be here to welcome you into the world and help your dad and I with the newness of becoming parents. Everything was truly perfect.

And then, three months later, the world changed. Drastically.

The world was suffering from a pandemic that shut everything down and laid waste to any plans that your family had made to come and see you. The ultrasounds and doctor’s visits, the ones to make sure you were growing strong and healthy, became visits that only I could go to. Your dad was asked to wait in the car. He missed the first time I was able to hear your little heartbeat drumming away.

It was hard for him and he was sad, but he stayed strong for us anyway. I remember the fear I had when word got around that mothers might not be allowed to have any support people in with them while they gave birth. The

doubt hear the term “Quarantine Babies” when referring to you and your classmates.

Yes, things were challenging.

Very challenging. I was only one of thousands of parents who cried, raged and mourned over the world that their children were born into.

It still doesn’t seem fair that your grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins didn’t get to hold you as a newborn. It’s not right that your first visit with Santa had to be a distanced one and that your family could only share Christmas with you through video calls. It’s unfair that you had two parents who were more exhausted than they would have been if they had been lucky enough to have support from family during those months when you went through your purple crying phase. I also feel guilty about the knowledge we lost out on having by not being able to attend the cancelled lamaze classes.

I wonder about when you’ll be able to visit a zoo, a waterpark, or a playground full of other children. I wait patiently for the church to restart its family services again. I plan an online baptism for the friends and family to share in. I worry about all the things that you’re missing out on.

All the things I had planned to do with you in your first year that are impossible with how the world is now.

But then. Then I look at you and you’re smiling. You’re busy exploring, devouring, smashing, learning and experiencing your world. Your world. This is the one you have, not the one I wanted you to have.

I realize, as I watch you laugh at yourself in the mirror, that your world is wondrous to you. It’s full of all of these amazing things that I have been too blind to see.

You don’t look at the world through the lens of what is missing, because everything is new to you. You don’t see your grandparents on a video call and feel sad because they aren’t physically there to hold you; no, you see them and you get excited becont’d on page 11 ...

No, you don’t get excited at the pool because you finally get to go; you get excited because you’re learning how to swim and you love the water.

You live the moments you have, without thought of ones you lost out on.

You, my love, make me realize that while 2020 was a challenging year that took many things away, it also gave so much back. It created the world that you love to experience every single day. This world may not be what I pictured for you, but it is yours, and it is its own kind of wonderful.

Your world is one where gettogethers are not taken for granted. Visits with family and friends are cherished more than ever before. People are learning what it’s like to live more simply and are realizing that some of the things they used to think that they couldn’t live without,

they are actually better off without. People are learning what really matters to them. Hopefully we won’t be so quick to take the people and things we value for granted.

But the most important thing that 2020 gave back, my love, was you. You, who make me so unbelievably happy. You challenge me, exhaust me, entertain me and enlighten me. You make me realize that 2020 was not a year I will look back on with disdain. I will look back on 2020 and think about you with a smile on my face.

I will think about the first time we called our family from the hospital after you were born and how proud we were to show you off. I will think about coming home to find that our front door had been decorated with cards and well wishes by people who already loved you and want to welcome you from a safe distance. arol Kung is measuring the cross-section of a deck beam on a 108-year old mining dredge. Dredge No. 4 is a giant gold-seeking machine. It measures two-thirds the size of a football field, eight storeys high and weighs more than 1,000 tons.

This wooden behemoth gobbled up riverbeds in Yukon’s goldfields between 1912 and 1959. The vessel now rests as a national historic site near Dawson City, hosting thousands of visitors on guided tours every summer.

As a structural conservation engineer with Parks Canada, Kung works with site teams to keep historic resources like Dredge No. 4 in good condition. On this winter day outside Dawson City, the temperature is a biting -18 degrees C,

but Kung doesn’t feel the icy gnaw of the arctic breeze. She is 4,340 kilometres away, snug within her home office in Ottawa, using Finite Element (FE) technology to build a 3D model to help conserve this historic structure.

“The idea is to understand how the structure is behaving as a whole right now,” Kung says.

“Through analyzing the outputs, we can identify the areas that may need intervention.”

FE modelling is a digital process that lets engineers visualize and understand how a structure is responding to existing or applied forces. The structure is drawn within a software, piece by piece, and each small element is given properties including material cont’d on page 13 ...

“The primary step is building the geometry and making sure that it’s as representative as it can be,” says Kung. “I’m looking at the beams and the columns.

The floor system, the wall system. It’s interesting, because it’s a boat. So it’s got a different type of geometry than what a building would have.”

Even without COVID-19 travel restrictions, getting engineering specialists like Kung to this far corner of the country for extended periods is a challenge. Since Kung can’t measure the dredge in person, she pores over 470 historic drawings and laser scan data to aid her model building.

“I can go into a drawing and size up a beam to know the crosssection. And I can put that into the model. Any measurements I would take on site to get the geometry is exactly what I would have to do now through the historic drawings and laser scan data.”

When the model is run, contours are generated showing areas from lower to higher stress. “The model outputs the response of the building. And it’s for us to look at the information … and to analyze and interpret that information into useful information for us,” Kung says.

Dredge No. 4 was designed to float on ponds and systematically dig, sift and expel river gravels.

For decades it has been continuously dry-docked on wooden cribbings, an unnatural state for a vessel and one that can impact its structural integrity over time.

Kung sees the model as an important step toward planning for future conservation work on the vessel.

“A lot of times we act reactively to projects. I think that by having a model that looks at a structure holistically, you can not only use it for the specific projects that we have on hand, but we can

use it as a tool to proactively plan future work on the dredge.”

The power of using an FE model is in its adaptability. Once the model is built, refined and stresses identified, it can also be used to test how different solutions to problems will work. The model will help Parks Canada determine the best options for conserving Dredge No. 4.

“That is one of the benefits of the model. Not only can we build it to what it is now, see the final distribution of forces, areas of stress, areas of possible concern.

But we can manipulate the model afterwards to see how interventions can affect it.”

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively.

Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air.

Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance.

Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT Be prepared whether hiking for an afternoon or backpacking for a week

W

itnessing the slow return of light to the territory has brought to mind this popular quote from Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring: “Those who contemplate the beauty of the Earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

As we move closer to spring, we are reminded of the value in other repeated rhythms.

Walking, hiking or backpacking is one of the most uncomplicated ways to connect with the natural world. We can hold different ideas about how to do these things. There’s inherent value and joy in seeing new things while walking or hiking. There is also joy that can be found in deepening one’s relationship with a place by walking familiar trails.

Despite the wide breadth of resources, literature and opinions on backpacking culture, it is an activity that doesn’t need many specialized pieces of gear to find success. It’s important to check local sources, animal sightings and the weather, and ensure you respect and consider those whose land you are traveling on.

Whether you are out for a short or long day hike, or planning to

camp overnight, here’s a few ideas to have in your back pocket (or your pack).

Before you take a single step, take off your shoes and socks and take a good look at your feet. Are there blisters or sore spots with the shoes you’re currently wearing? Whether you choose to wear a sturdy shoe or a boot, it’s important to ensure the first time you wear them isn’t when you’re about to head off on a long multiday hike. Wear them around your apartment, climb the stairs and wear them to work. Consider how it feels to be in those shoes all day.

If you’re walking and start feeling a warmth or a pressure on your feet, you’ll want to stop right away and pad that spot out.

Medical tape works well, as does moleskin, a type of fuzzy tape that creates a barrier between the sore spot on your foot and the rubbing irritant on your shoe. If you wait until it’s a fully formed blister, it becomes harder to protect that spot as you’re moving.

It also becomes increasingly challenging to keep it from getting worse once it forms. Tincture of Benzoin is a good thing to have in a first aid kit. When applied to a hot spot, it helps prevent infec-

foot over long days and also keeps you warm. If you have extra plastic bags, they can be put on outside a pair of dry socks and inside your shoes.

Using them as a moisture barrier, especially if your “dry” camp shoes become wet, will keep you warmer as you stand around in camp.

If you’re carrying equipment in a backpack, consider lining the inside of your bag with a large, sturdy garbage bag. This is a simple way to keep the interior of your bag dry when you put it on the ground or use it as a seat while taking a break. A sit pad, or a piece of foam is also a great option for a dry, insulated seat on cold or wet ground.

A good bag will be designed to carry weight on your midsection or hips and not your shoulders. Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest The Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society is excited to present its Every Student, Every Day Water Break Photo Contest; a territory-wide awareness campaign to encourage Yukon students to be active, healthy and stay hydrated, while reducing plastic waste and its impact on the environment.

Every Student, Every Day, established by the Society to help address barriers to student attendance in schools across the territory, is providing all Yukon students with a branded water bottle, donated by Victoria Gold and distributed to Yukon schools by contest partners Air North, Yukon’s Airline and Small’s Expediting Services.

All Yukon students will receive their water bottle at their school and are encouraged to participate in this fun photo contest by submitting a selfie with their water bottle as they go about their favourite activity or hobby. Entrants will qualify to win prizes in three different age categories.

The contest entry deadline is September 30, 2021 and winners will be announced in October. Yukon students can also participate in the contest without the water bottle by drawing or downloading and printing the Every Student, Every Day logo and displaying it in their photo. Parental supervision and assistance are encouraged for younger Yukoners in photographing their activities.
