Though their season was put on hold last year, Whitehorse’s All-City Band perseveres with a modified program

t wasn’t easy for the All-City Band to postpone its slate of annual Christmas events. Being part of the musical ensemble often brings a sense of community to its students, according to Toby Moisey, Porter Creek Secondary School’s (PCSS) band teacher.

While the band was on pause and its future was uncertain, its musicians felt like they had something important taken from them.

“For many people, the band is a big community group and social draw,” says Moisey. “Lots of people were finding that they were missing a part of their lives.”

With guidelines constantly changing and no clear light at the end of the tunnel, the All-

Eventually, in the new year, things started to look up, and they started to plan concerts and rehearsals with a new approach.

“To me, it was a complete miracle,” says Marie Gallagher, the All-City Band Society’s administrator.

In February, the All-City Band put on a Valentine’s Day concert.

It wasn’t feasible to put on a full live performance, so the group recorded and streamed the show.

By presenting it digitally, they were able to have people outside of Whitehorse view it, including some of Gallagher’s family in Scotland. Moisey said the band may continue to stream shows, even when they go back to playing for an audience.

“It was fun putting it together and it was a really good experience,” he says. “We got a highquality recording of the band as well.”

the band. First, they played another virtual show for Rendezvous weekend that was streamed on Feb. 26. Coming up at the end of March, the band will be presenting yet another two online events, this time to make up for their lost Christmas concert. The team chose to have the band play pieces that reflect the versatility of its musicians, according to Alex James, an All-City Band director.

One piece the band is excited to showcase is “The Witch and the Saint,” by Steven Reineke. The piece is story-driven, and follows two sisters who were separated at birth, one becoming a witch and one becoming a saint. Another is a piece called “Wayfaring Stranger,” arranged by Christopher Nelson.

“There’s some pretty exciting, fast music,” says Moisey. “But also very slow, reflective music with lots of colours.”

Secondary School (VCSS) and Jack Hulland Elementary School.

In order to accommodate social distancing, the band’s setup had to be completely changed. In order to ensure that there could be a minimum of two metres of distance between each member at all times, the band had to relocate to a larger room and start having rehearsals in the PCSS cafeteria instead of its music room.

“Now I can’t even think of how we fit 60 people in that band room for rehearsals!” says Moisey.

James says the new setup allows the band to be able to work more on its respective sections and the spacing actually helps the musicians hear each other better.

It doesn’t come without its hassles though. The band can only play for a half hour at a time before the members need to put their masks on and leave the room to allow the air to circulate.

The leaders agree that working with these new challenges fostered unexpected growth within the band. James says that in these times, it is easy to feel stuck and discouraged, but music is something that can push people forward and inspire them to get through the tougher days.

“It feels like a triumph to allow this to continue this happen,” he says.

“Especially for the kids— it gives them something to be striving towards. It keeps me hopeful about what we’re able to do and what we’ll continue to be able to do.”

It’s a simple love of music that keeps Moisey, Gallagher and James doing everything they can to find ways for the All-City Band

to continue through the pandemic. While James and Moisey both came from musical families and started taking piano lessons as

children, music came to Gallagher later, when she was a teenager and a schoolteacher discovered her musical intuition.

During a class exercise, students were asked to make a drawing prompted by a piece of music.

The piece was “La Cathédrale Engloutie” by Claude Debussy, and Gallagher drew a church.

“We didn’t know what the piece of music was called,” she says. “We knew nothing about it.”

The next thing she knew, she was being told by the music teacher that she needed to play an instrument. She had no idea at the time, but music would become one of the most important parts of her life.

riving back to the Robert Campbell Highway, we headed down the now unpaved road into apocalyptic-looking storm clouds. Other travellers passed us, headed in the opposite direction, which was becoming a hallmark of the vacation; us driving into ominous landscapes while everyone else fled. The unsettling feelings passed when we pulled up to the campground 40 minutes later and found most of the sites were full. The downpour was finally passing and I suggested we check out the canyon before setting up our tent.

Dousing ourselves again in bug spray, we took the trail next to our site to see what Lapie Canyon looked like. The trail was free of mushrooms, but was full of moss and asters. As we made our way to the end of the trail we walked up an outcrop and saw the huge opening of the canyon and the fastflowing Lapie River below. The water had a green-blue hue to it, accented by several white rapids.

On our right, the river stretched out wide and calmly nestled up against the rocky shore.

“I didn’t know water in the Yukon could look like this,” I said. I was used to the silt-filled Yukon River and the dark, freezing waters of the Klondike River.

With hikers and their dog on our tail, we detoured left and quickly walked through the narrow, wet, brushy trail. The further we walked, the better the view and the more my anxiety kicked in from standing close to the edge of the canyon. We walked all the way

to the bridge that crosses the river on the highway and then decided to turn back, to set up our tent and start a fire to cook dinner. The bug spray didn’t have a long-lasting effect on these pests, so my embarrassing head net went on.

“You seem calmer,” Paul said. I wasn’t. I tucked my hands in the sleeves of my rain coat to spare them from the mosquitoes and nodded.

After eating dinner, preparing our lunch for the next day and writing a few postcards I found in the Faro Discovery Store, we called it a night and quickly changed into warm pajamas for cont’d on page 11 ...

Paul Rath’s Fishing with My Fathers is out now In 2017 Paul Rath attended the North Words Symposium in Skagway. He joined an early morning session in the library hosted by Deb Vanasse, an experience that led to the birth of his first book, Fishing with My Fathers, earlier this year.

“Deb started off the session by challenging us to write out a list of 10 things of which we were masters,” Rath says. “I only came up with six, but fishing for white fish topped my list. As I’ve been doing it for 40 years with my family, I do truly feel like I’ve mastered that skill.”

When Vanasse had participants expand on one of the items from their lists, it was a no-brainer for Rath.

“That paragraph turned into a story, and that story turned into a set of stories about fishing with my father and my other fishing teachers,” he says. “Fishing provided us with the chance to talk, and we talked about everything, nothing was off-limits. We talked about what happens after you die, my place in the tapestry of my family, the difficult bosses. Those conversations were my father teaching me how to be a good human.”

And that single story turned into an entire book.

He has dedicated Fishing With My Fathers to his grandson and father called the point,” says Rath, relating one of the stories from the book. “I think of it as my spot.

There are a million things that come together to make that spot magical. One day we arrived to fish and there was someone already there. Fishing protocol required that we needed to leave that spot to the person that got there first and we would have to move further down the lake. But as we fished I noticed that he wasn’t very good. My brother and I crowded him and started catching fish right beside him. Eventually he got disgusted and left.

As he was walking away my dad called him back and then dumped all of the fish I had caught into his bag. I realize now that it was my dad teaching me that you can’t

benefit from being rude.”

This book is Rath’s tribute to his father, his grandfather and the other fishing teachers who tried to teach him to be a man.

He says the process of writing the book was like climbing a never-ending staircase. The process of writing, refining and sending your work out again and again is relentless.

“It’s been a long, hard climb for an old fat guy with a bad knee,” he laughed. But now it’s out there.

T

he Yukon is well-known for its gold, but less known are the gemstones. What determines whether a mineral can be called a gemstone is open to interpretation. The American Geological Institute defines a gem as “a general term for any precious or semi-precious stone, especially when cut or polished for ornamental purposes.”

Evidence of the use of gemstones dates back 25,000 years.

Ornamental jewellery in the form of shells and bones dates to 100,000 years ago. Through Egyptian, Greek and Roman times, use of gems exploded. Other centres started in China and India. Eventually the use of gems for jewellery spread around the globe.

Which minerals are considered

precious has changed over time.

Due to new discoveries in South Africa in the late 1800s, there was a large surplus of diamonds. Aside from being the hardest known mineral and filling some niche industrial uses, no one knew what to use them for. A company named De Beers was formed in 1888. It developed a marketing strategy that first involved buying up all

the existing mines and creating a monopoly. Next came an advertising campaign launched in the 1930s. It created stories around the romance of diamonds, culminating in 1948 with the “A Diamond is Forever” slogan. Increased demand and tight control on supply made De Beers an international giant.

Carat for carat, rubies are

worth more than diamonds. Gem quality rubies are much rarer than diamonds. A carat is a unit of weight used for gemstones. One carat is 200 milligrams. Rubies are red varieties of the mineral corundum, an aluminum oxide.

Sapphires are blue or yellow corundum. Chromium in the crystal structure of corundum gives it the red colouring, while vanadium and titanium give the blues and yellows.

Corundum is the second hardest mineral, just behind diamonds on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It is not a rare mineral, but the deeply coloured gem quality crystals are. Corundum is made synthetically for industrial use.

The aluminum oxide in sandpaper is synthetic corundum, as are the “rubies” used in ruby lasers.

The main producers of rubies are alluvial sources in Africa, southeast Asia and Australia. Alluvial deposits are laid down by rivers or creeks, much like Yukon placer gold. The sources seem to be related to a certain type of basalt similar to some found in the Yukon. There are no known occurrences of rubies here, as yet. Ruby, Alaska, along the Yukon River received its name when placer miners thought they found rubies in their sluices. They turned out to be common garnets. If you are looking for rubies in the territory why not start in the Ruby Range?

There are reports of diamonds being found in the sluice boxes of placer miners. About 20 over the years from various creeks in the Klondike and Kluane areas. None of these have been scientifically proven, but some in Alaska have been.

Diamonds are carbon that has been subjected to extreme heat and pressure, conditions that exist only in the mantle of Earth. The diamonds are transported to the surface by very dark green rocks called ultramafics, specifically kimberlites and lamprophyres.

Kimberlites are named after the city of Kimberley in South Africa where they were discovered.

In the early 1990s, geologists Charles Fipke and Stu Blussom discovered the first diamond bearing kimberlite near Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories. This led to a series of other discoveries that became Canada’s first diamond mines. The kimberlites were hidden under small, circular lakes.

Most prolific diamond occurrences are found in kimberlites located in very old Precambrian shield rocks.

Shield rocks underlay the Yukon northeast of the Tintina Trench, but they are covered by thousands of metres of younger rocks.

It is possible very small hidden diamond-bearing pipes occur in the Klondike. They could be from space, as diamonds have been found in some meteorites.

The Yukon Geological Survey, in its publication Yukon Placer Mining Industry 2003-2006, references a paper by Yana Fedortchouk. Titled “Yukon placer diamonds: Possible sources,” the paper concludes that the source is still a mystery. Diamonds are not much more dense than your average rock, so sluice boxes designed for much heavier gold would not usually trap diamonds. There may be more out there then we know.

The term “Yukon Diamonds”

was the name given by the oldtimers to cassiterite pebbles found in various Klondike and Mayo area creeks. Cassiterite is a tin oxide that is usually brown with black bands, giving it the historical name of wood-tin. “Alaska Black Diamonds” are actually hematite, an iron oxide that has a very shiny grey-silver lustre. Most mineral shops always have a bin of these polished stones.

The third most valuable gemstone is the emerald, first discovered in ancient Egypt. Emeralds are the vivid green variety of the mineral beryl, a beryllium aluminum silicate. The addition of chromium to the crystal structure gives the bright green. A paler green variety forms with the addition of vanadium. Aquamarine is a blue beryl, thanks to iron.

Emeralds have been found in the Yukon. In 1997, Yukon prospector, Ron Berdahl uncovered green beryl around a tungsten showing near Cantung, NWT. Chemical analysis showed the green came from vanadium rather than chromium, so, technically, they were not emeralds. The year after, true emeralds were discovered by Yukon geologist, Bill Wengzynowski, who was working for Expatriate Resources in the Finlayson Lake area. Chromium was confirmed to be present.

The property was acquired by True North Gems Inc. in 2002.

Later that year a six-tonne sample of the deposit yielded 120 grams of gem grade emeralds. The emeralds are relatively small due to extensive fracturing. It’s not economical to mine them. Very high-quality emeralds come from Columbia. The largest emerald discovered comes from Brazil.

400 million dollars, it weighs 340 kilograms or 1,700,000 carats. It stands over a metre tall.

Since 1976, the Yukon has had its own official gemstone, lazulite.

It is an aluminum-magnesium-iron phosphate with pyramid-shaped crystals. They are a brilliant azure blue colour, sometimes whitish or green-coloured. The Blow River area of Ivvavik National Park is renowned for its beautiful crystals.

Lazulite is often confused with lapis lazuli which is composed of the mineral lazurite. Both have similar colours and properties.

Another gemstone you are likely to come across in the North, especially if you are wandering along Broadway Street in Skagway, is tanzanite. Tanzanite is a blue-violet version of the mineral zoisite, a hydrous calcium-aluminum silicate. The incorporation of water into the mineral structure makes it a relatively fragile gemstone compared to most. Tanzanite is a new gemstone, discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania. It was actually the international jeweller Tiffany & Co that created the name tanzanite. Blue zoisite was not sexy enough for marketing purposes.

We also recognize that investment in early learning creates strong and lasting social and economic benefits. Through investments in early learning, we are helping our economy and reducing the burden on our health and social services later in life.

On behalf of Yukon families throughout the territory, a Yukon Party government will make strategic improvements to the Yukon’s childcare and early learning system that focus on affordability and quality.

If elected on April 12, we will: • Recognize the value of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) by increasing their wages.

• Create incentives for ECEs to enhance their education, skills and training.

• Support much needed improvements to daycare facilities through a dedicated upgrade fund.

• Enhance and provide long-term stable funding to the Yukon Child Development Centre.

In order to address affordability, we will ensure ALL Yukon families are supported. This is the most important investment we can make in our future and why a Yukon Party government will create: • The Yukon Universal Child Benefit of $500 per child per month, through a non-taxable benefit directly to parents for each child up to the age of five. Parents will receive a monthly nontaxable amount to help with the cost of childcare.

• $100 per child per month, through a non-taxable benefit directly to parents for each child aged five to 10.

By Supporting Healthy Families, the Yukon Party team and I believe families are best positioned to decide which childcare options work best for them.

EYE ON THE OUTDOORS

KNOWING THE CANADIAN BEAVER

B

ack in the 50s and 60s, before many of my readers were even born, as a conservation officer I had the pleasure of undertaking many studies on specific wildlife. These included banding waterfowl, tagging and following fish species, partaking in tagging waterfowl, netting and tagging fish, big game management such as flying the winter yards, and aging the harvested big game animals. I also helped with a three-year study of the life cycle of the “King of the Upland Birds,” the Hungarian partridge. But of all these species, the most interesting of all was the Canadian Beaver.

Long before becoming a conservation officer (actually age 12) I accompanied my neighbour who was an explosives expert and took out stumps for people. Together, we blew apart large areas, making way for roads, etc. In my later years as a CO, my experience with

dynamite meant I was given the responsibility of removing beaver dams that were becoming a problem in our eastern Ontario district.

Of course, there are good sides and bad sides to most stories.

Blowing up beaver dams comes with some unique tales. One such incident took place in a rural section where a gravel township road passed over the wooden bridge of a small creek creek. I received a call from the township roads supervisor about a beaver dam under one of their rural roads. At 2 p.m. the following afternoon, I met the roads supervisor at the bridge as arranged. He offered me a refreshing drink from his (shall I say) cold tea, if you catch the phrase, but I declined. As our conversation continued, he told me he had already put four sticks of dynamite in the dam under the wooden bridge, but it had not gone off for some reason or the other.

I asked him what he knew about using dynamite. “What is there to know?” he asked. “Bang is bang.”

It was clear he knew little if any, about what fuses or caps he should be using, or the number of sticks required to safely remove the dam. I backed my cruiser away from the bridge and radioed the office to tell my boss I would not be blowing the dam under the bridge as instructed. The foreman then got a little upset with me and asked me to give him some dynamite. Of course I asked my boss and, of course, I was told to do so. I opened the trunk and he took four sticks from the box. I handed him a cap and some waterproof fuse and he marched down to the bridge, crawled under it and planted four more sticks in the dam. When he crawled out from under the bridge, he was on my side and his truck was on the other side. He came back to my cruiser,

PHOTO: Pixabay now a safe distance away, and there was one big BANG. We drove up to the creek and got out of the cruiser. I did credit him in removing the beaver dam, but gave him no comments on also removing the bridge.

Of course there were other occasions to deal with beaver dams.

Some of the beaver dams that had to be removed were in tough areas to get to, so I would be choppered in to blow the dam. Now I had flown different fixed-wing aircraft and this young chopper pilot stated that fixed-wing pilots were not really pilots as it wasn’t much different from driving a car. Flying a chopper was being a real pilot.

Often he did his best flying that small Bell chopper and me into hard-to-access areas. We would land close to the beaver dam, I would do my job of setting the explosives, then climb back into the chopper for the pilot to lift and back away from the dam. Now lifting off and backing away is rather

a poor description, as we would almost do a loop, scaring the, well, you-know-what out of me. Even landing close to the beaver dame guaranteed I would not have a constipation problem, as I thought that the blades of that confounded small Bell chopper would assist the beaver in cutting down the trees.

Finally I told the boss I would pack into these remote dams and if I had to camp out overnight, it was worth adding a few more positive years to my life. Now my wife Lisa tells me she would like to learn how to fly a chopper. Well honey, I love you, I will do the dishes, wash the floors, wash the clothes and cut the lawn, but before you take me up in any chopper and pay me back for some of the minor tricks I played on you, there will have to be two moons in the sky.

I shouldn’t even think there could be two moons in the sky as just before I go to bed I peek out the curtain to be sure that could not be possible. n

ADAPTIVE STRATEGIES Two Recipes That Love Substitutions

D

uring this bizarre year of COVID constraints, home cooks have had to develop adaptive culinary behaviours to increase our success in the kitchen. Sometimes key ingredients for a recipe simply weren’t available, so we acquired new competencies. We became masters of substitution. Old tricks our mothers taught us came back to the fore, like souring milk with a teaspoon of vinegar if we didn’t have buttermilk, or using yogurt instead.

We started designing meals around what we could find, choosing recipes that had a certain amount of flex, that could bend to the occasion if the cupboard was bare of oregano, but rich in pasture sage, or if the bacon was finished, but there was still some moose sausage left.

Sensitive to our plight, online cooks and bloggers accommodat-

ed us, offering bendy dishes that could support all kinds of changes and substitutions. One such gift came over the transom from the New York Times in mid-February; a recipe by Dorie Greenspan for cake salé, a savoury bread served in France at the cocktail hour to accompany the aperitif.

You can do just about anything with this bread, as long as you don’t fool around with the basic proportions. Substitute olives or sundried tomatoes for the dried fruit, throw in bits of chorizo or ham, or use any herbs and cheese you have on hand (grate the harder cheeses like Parmesan). Once you start exploring you’ll find recipes that substitute butter for oil, or even mayonnaise. See? You can do anything with this bread.

Instructions 1. Place a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350F. Butter a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. In another bowl, mix the dried fruit and herbs, and keep the cranberries and cheese at hand.

3. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until frothy, then whisk in the milk, oil, birch syrup and orange zest.

4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just about blended. Add the dried fruit and herbs, stir once or twice, then add the feta and cranberries and combine everything with a few swift strokes.

5. Scrape the dough into the pan with a spatula, pressing the dough into the corners. Smooth out the top by patting it with a wet hand. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden, the cake has started to pull away from the sides of the pan, and a tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

6. Unmould the cake onto a rack, turn it right side up and let it cool to room temperature. To serve, cut the loaf into thick slices, and cut the slices into smaller lengths. Have some tapenade and some ricotta or goat cheese on the side, and try out all the combinations.

The loaf will keep for several days, wrapped well, and it’s great toasted on the second or third day.

OLIVE AND DRIED CRANBERRY TAPENADE Olives with pits retain their flavour better than pitted, but do use pitted if you want to save time. I find chopping the olives by hand results in a pleasing chunky texture, but again, if you want to save time, put all the ingredients in a food processer and pulse until combined, stopping before the tapenade is smooth.

5. Cover and refrigerate, but bring the tapenade to room temperature before serving for maximum flavour.

Set your oven to 425 degrees. Rub each trout filet with oil then season to taste with salt and pepper. Place on a tray in the oven and cook for 10 minutes, so until the trout is cooked through and flakey. Let cool to room temperature.

When trout is cool enough to handle peel away skin and discard and toss with thinly sliced Brussels sprouts, mayonnaise, and mustard and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Place 1/4 cup of filling in the center of each wrapper, brush the edges of the wrapper with beaten egg then fold the bottom corner over the filling, and the two side corners over top, and roll the spring roll around itself like a cigar. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers and brush each spring roll with oil.

FOR PEAT’S SAKE

P

eat moss is commonly used around the garden.

But what is it really? Peat is the partially decayed organic matter that comes from bogs or muskegs. And bogs are the most efficient carbon sink there is.

These peatland ecosystems take thousands of years to develop.

Peat forms in wetlands where there is stagnant water, which blocks the airflow and slows the rate of decomposition of vegetation. The peat bog provides habitat for very distinct fauna and flora. Not only does harvesting peat change this habitat, it drains the bogs. This exposes the sequestered carbon and releases it into the atmosphere. It also takes centuries for the bogs to recover from any disturbance. So it isn’t very sustainable.

In some places, peat is harvested as a source of fuel and heat. This makes it a fire hazard as the fires in peat are not extinguished easily. We have even had some wildfires in the Yukon go underground and keep burning in the peat for many years.

Peat moss has been stocked in gardening centres for decades. It is used in container gardening to retain moisture, as it absorbs up to 10 to 20 times its weight in water. It is even in the very convenient peat pellets used to start plants in. But all this gardening use is destroying wetland habitat.

And while the peat will rebuild, it will take centuries. Which makes it more of a non-renewable than

It is very beneficial to the garden as it can be used as a mulch to prevent moisture loss in the early spring, but then it breaks down relatively quickly and will then add nutrients to the soil. And if you leave the raking of the lawn until spring, wait a while before that clean-up project to allow any hibernating insects to awaken naturally.

Well, here are some substitutes that might work: COIR: Derived from the outer husk of the coconut, coir can be used in much the same way as peat. I did notice that it does have very long strands sometimes, which may be difficult to work with, but it mulches much the same as peat.

It does have to be shipped to the Yukon, so the carbon footprint is larger than if it were produced in the territory.

COMPOST: Always a good addition to any garden. Not only does it add water retention properties to the soil, it brings nutrients as well. And if you compost, it costs next to nothing and diverts waste from the landfill.

BARK CHIPS/WOOD FIBERS: Can be used as a mulch in the garden. But they do have the disadvantage of needing a source of nitrogen in order to break down and do the garden some good. If you have outdoor animals, chickens, or pigs, the wood fibers can be used as bedding first, com-

posted and then spread onto the garden. This is a great way to clean up the bark leftover from a season of heating with wood.

PINE NEEDLES: Help retain moisture and suppress weeds when used as a mulch. If it is tilled into the soil, it helps with drainage and will provide nutrients. It does raise the pH a bit, but for berry bushes this would be perfect as they require a bit more acid in the soil. So when fire smarting this summer, remember to collect the pine needles to be used in your gardening.

ANIMAL MANURE: Especially if it has composted for a season or two, it’s a very good addition to any garden. The nutrients are ready to be taken up by plants right away. It aids in water retention in the soil and gives good bacteria something to eat so they can thrive as well.

Some plants are able to make use of fresh manure but most will actually be damaged by it as the nitrogen is too high. So care should be taken when sourcing animal manure for your garden. One thing to keep in mind is the source animal. There are some diseases that can be transferred from cats, dogs and human manure. So it is best to avoid these, especially for the vegetable garden.

By using something other than peat moss, our gardens will still grow as well but without contributing to the destruction of a wetland somewhere. So this spring, for peat’s sake, use something else. n

search, I found out the barge had been built in Vancouver in 1964 and then rebuilt in 1985, probably in Dawson City. And I learned the community names on the sides of boats have to do with where the vessel was initially registered.

On our long drive back, Paul was keen to take “the other highway” that had been cryptically suggested by acquaintances. This was a narrow dirt road that wound for 53 kilometres between three campgrounds at Frenchman Lake, Nunatuk Campground and Tatchun Lake. Dense, old spruce trees and poplar lined the highway.

Pulling into the empty Tatchun Lake Campground, I noticed there were no COVID-19 signs posted anywhere. Nothing on, or inside the outhouses where they’d been displayed at other sites. The campground was eerily deserted. I couldn’t help but feel like we were unexpected guests.

Paul took his fishing rod down to the dock and I hauled out supplies to make coffee to fuel the last four hours of our drive. The forecast looked dismal. Charcoal

clouds inched closer and wind blew out my matches as I tried to light my stove. While waiting for the water to slowly roll to a boil, I watched a squirrel make its way up to the picnic table,

bypass me and scramble into a spruce tree. It had made a nest in some branch dieback from an infection on the lowest limb of the tree. The squirrel was chewing on a large twig and stuffing it into its lodge, adding more support for the rain storm we were about to have.

I walked our coffees down to the dock and asked Paul if I could cast a line in the water. I don’t fish, so I listened to his instructions and cast the line twice.

Feeling more confident on the third cast, I flung the rod in the direction of the lake and nearly caught him in the chest. The hook bounced off his shirt as he tried to dodge it.

We decided to pack everything up just in time to miss another downpour.

While taking over my share of the driving, I reflected on how grateful I felt to have a change of scenery and a small break.

Weather, nature and life in the wild (mosquitoes included) continues to carry on, untouched by COVID. n

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE BEAVER RIVER Learning about the land and myself

“W

ho wants to sit up front in the co-pilot’s seat?” asked Adam, the float plane pilot. No one in that tiny plane had a chance to say anything. I was so eager to be right up front, I jumped at the opportunity. It was my first float plane ride and I, along with several others, was heading to paddle the Beaver River in one of the most pristine parts of the world. Lucky for me, this is also my traditional territory. The view from where I was sitting was extraordinary and I couldn’t wait to be down in the heart of it all.

CPAWS Yukon has, for the second year in a row, organized a paddling trip on the Beaver River for the youth of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. It’s a way for us to see what could perish if mining companies continue to stake claims and develop roads through this vast, untouched area. Our world, it seems, has so few real untouched places left.

This trip was even more special for me as I got to paddle the Beaver River with my older and younger sisters and one of my very good friends, the well-known Bobbi-Rose Koe from the Teetl’it Gwich’in first nation. Bobbi-Rose is an inspiring young First Nations woman who has learned and retained a lot from her Elders.

She recently became a Teetl’it Gwich’in river guide and is starting up her river guiding business, which is such an inspiration for young Indigenous youth! Throughout the trip, she and I shared stories and I listened in awe. BobbiRose has a beautiful way of telling stories that makes you feel like you are living the story alongside her.

Being out on the land with my sisters, cousins, and friends old and new, sharing stories, food, laughs and tears, I got a sense of how our ancestors must have lived and how they took in the beauty of the land and used all its offer-

ings with respect and restraint.

The simplest things are burned in my memory, such as little animal trails leading to the water from the side of the creeks; squirrels and muskrats; wild, plump and sweet blueberries; salmon fry swimming in the shallow waters of the Beaver River. The list truly does go on.

The first few days of the trip, I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that there are businesses that don’t stop to think of the impact resulting from developed roads, nevermind the fact that there is already blasting and drilling going on in many similar, pristine places. Why would anyone want to disturb this natural habitat for the animals, fish and trees? The waters that flow throughout that area are so crystal clear and clean to drink. I thought constantly about the fact that this is what our ancestors got to experience and have right at their fingertips. The mountain peaks were also magical

Jodie in a canoe to me. I had never seen any landscape like that before and it made me want to also experience the Wind, Peel and Snake Rivers. I have only seen photos and know now that I need to see that area as well.

Over the course of the 12 days paddling and portaging, we went through the waters of the Clark Lakes, Scougle Creek and the Beaver River. We met up with the confluence of the Rackla River, and the well-known Stewart River.

All these bodies of water flowed in their own way. When we hit a new body of water, you could tell just by the colour, especially the Stewart River. The landscape surrounding the Stewart dramatically changes once you hit those waters. The spruce trees are thick around every corner. The swirling eddies remind you of the fact that this body of water can swallow you up whole. It’s a dangerous place to be. But I felt safe, knowing my people have gone down this path

so many times before. And I then got a sense of feeling almost at home, and that this experience was coming to an end. I was sad that day, knowing our journey was almost over, because I had this feeling that I could have stayed out in that beautiful country for at least another few weeks.

With only a few more days to go, I worked up the courage to stern the canoe. It can be quite cont’d on page 27 ...

Yukan Canoe provides a wide range of Paddlesport Courses for you to learn from certified passionate Instructors. Courses Include Canoe-solo/tandem, Sea Kayaking, Whitewater Kayaking, Swift Water Rescue, and new for 2021 Packrafting. We provide a safe supportive environment for you to build your paddling skills and confidence.

We take pride in watching our students succeed and connect with the water.

INTRO TO MOVING WATER $249 Our flagship course. Students will be introduced to moving water fundamentals.

Skills learned will be used in all future paddling.

In this 2 ½ day course you will learn canoe strokes, equipment, front ferries, eddy turns, reading the river and canoe safety. This is a moving water course and not a Whitewater course.

My experience on the Beaver River ... cont’d from Page 25 Jodie in a plane scary on the river, but Bobbi-Rose was a great teacher. I did really well and I was happy to make Bobbi and my new “Beaver River family” proud.

I sterned for two whole days and let me tell you, my right arm was very sore! A good kind of sore, however, the kind of pain that makes you know you were tough when the going was rough.

We finished our journey in my hometown of Mayo, aka the Heart of the Yukon. We were met by the community and a socially-distanced welcome home parade where we all received a certifi-

cate in Junior Guiding & Leadership training. All of us learned so much about ourselves and each other during this almost twoweek endeavor. I saw the two youngest on the trip, Liam and Irene (my sister), both 13, overcome long, hard days with smiles on their faces. At the end of those days, they didn’t want to rest, but stayed up to play Monopoly beside the campfire. I saw Bryan Moses, who I’ve known all my life, in his element. I learned that he knew so much about the area, the fish and wildlife!

I never knew! It truly goes to show that everyone has a different side of themselves when out on the land. We become richer, deeper, and somehow simpler people. I can’t thank CPAWS and Na-Cho Nyak Dun enough for the opportunities they gave me and my fellow citizens on this epic and wild canoeing adventure.

Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Smoke and Sow has evolved from a popular food truck to one of Whitehorse’s newest restaurants

R

ay Magnuson was working as a chef in high-end fine dining restaurants in Calgary and it was burning him out. He had been in Calgary for 15 years, after moving south from Whitehorse to pursue his Red Seal training.

“A friend of mine was moving back home to Ontario and he gave me his smoker before he left,” says Magnuson. “I set it up on my condo balcony and just fell in love with it. I started trying to smoke all kinds of things.”

Understanding that one of the great secrets to a happy life is to follow your passions, Magnuson and his wife Dayna moved home with the intention of opening a southern-style bbq restaurant.

Whitehorse, especially at the Fireweed Market. It’s taken a few years, with a lot of twists and turns, and an amazing business partner, Steven Clapp, but the dream of a bricks-and-mortar restaurant has become a reality.

Smoke and Sow now graces Porter Creek with one of Whitehorse’s newest dine-in restaurants.

Magnuson acknowledged that their timing hasn’t been ideal.

“We picked pretty much the worst possible time to open a restaurant, with COVID and the associated restrictions. But the community has embraced us with open arms. I really couldn’t think of a better place in the world to open a business than in Whitehorse.

“It’s been going really well.

We’ve been open to the public as a sit-down restaurant for about three months, and a further two months before that for take-out only.”

Smoke and Sow focuses on southern-style bbq. The menu includes beef brisket, pulled pork, racks of ribs and whole chickens.

Since opening in Porter Creek, take-out has been a core element of the business. While take-out will always be offered, Magnuson is excited to see the response of the dine-in clientele.

“It’s pretty awesome to see so many smiling faces inside the space,” he says.“It’s also surreal.

BRAKE FLUID

Regular brake fluid changes ensure that a car’s braking system operates safely and effectively.

Modern braking systems use brake fluid to transfer the application of the brake pedal down to the front and rear brakes, to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The fluid is usually silicone based, which does not compress, giving a solid pedal feel and an increased temperature rating. The downside to using this style of fluid is that it absorbs moisture from the air.

Constant braking causes massive amounts of heat to be generated by the braking components, which is then transferred into the fluid. If there is moisture in the fluid, this will decrease the temperature rating of the fluid, and can result in a soft brake pedal and increased stopping distance.

Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years, regardless of kilometres travelled, but it may need to be changed more frequently if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions.

He says Smoke and Sow wouldn’t be where it is right now without the entire team, but in particular without Clapp.

One might suspect that between the dine-in and take-out business, the team at Smoke and Sow wouldn’t have time for much else. But they found ways to make the holidays extra special for their loyal customers.

“For Thanksgiving and Christmas we took orders for take-home turkey dinners that were really popular,” says Magnuson. “People who missed out on those should keep their eyes peeled on our social media heading into Easter as I think we’ll put together something special then as well.”

Customers can also expect new menu items this spring. Beers and cocktails will appear on the menu, along with expanded hours that will feature lunch as well as dinner.

HOW SHALL I THEN LIVE?

B

oth my husband and I have received two shots of COVID-19 vaccine. Now what? I think that is a question that many of us are asking and I would like to believe that I might have some thoughts on how to answer it. Many of us have read the book or seen the movie The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. That was one of my first reflections on the responsibility involved in choosing how and what to eat.

I have been fortunate to have always had a choice. When I lived in Bangladesh, I met people who were grateful to have the same rice and lentils every day. That dish or nothing was their choice.

But with options come responsibil-

ities. Just as with food options, whether it is vegetarian, vegan, organic, local, etc., so it is with other areas of life that the pandemic has shown us.

Many of us feel as if we have had no choice in our activities over the last year. We have not been able to be with friends or family, share food around the same table, hug each other, or gather to do the things we feel are important for our lives. We have been asked to live primarily within our local milieu. That has been a shock to people like me who feel entitled to go where they want and do what they want. Many of us have turned to exploring our own territory, camping, hiking, biking, paddling, skiing, etc.

But we have missed the travelling, holidays in warmer locales, exotic hikes in places such as South America, sipping coffee on terraces along the Seine in Paris, visiting game parks in Africa, and road trips in New Zealand, to name a few.

More importantly, we’ve missed visiting family and friends who live in distant places.

But now, as life begins to return to “normal,” how will we choose to live?

I am not a climate scientist and I am lucky to be past my working (for pay) life, but I have been en-

been helping to improve the planet. Many of us have been trying to consume less, reduce the waste that we produce, to reuse and recycle. I know folks who have had the time to declutter and reorganize their homes. Some are working from home and many may continue to do so even after it is no longer essential. That could mean big reductions in commuting and vehicle congestion, especially in cities. I believe that if enough people are committed to making changes, new work options will open up in green industries.

So then, how will I decide? Especially on the issues of travel? I have close relatives in Ontario, England, and France and I really want to be able to see them again. Should I decide never to fly again? Sounds hard. I have a son in Powell River, B.C., and even travelling there usually means a flight. And what if I need a medical specialist in Vancouver? Perhaps I should restrict myself to essential only air travel? Or how about one flight every two years? Only to visit loved ones? Or an overseas flight every two years? And what if no one else is willing to change? Why should I make sacrifices if no one else does? It’s not fair! But what is fair?

What is just?

Since the Victoria Gold NND CBA Scholarship was collaboratively established by the company and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun in 2012 through the mutually developed and implemented Comprehensive Cooperation and Benefits Agreement (CBA) 120 scholarships have been awarded to the First Nation’s citizens pursuing their post-secondary studies for a total disbursement totalling well over $100,000.
