he ennui of being a 20-something in Oslo. The devastating impacts of a dam built in B.C. a half century ago. The world premiere of a documentary about a Yukon “communications pirate” in pursuit of a CRTC license. These are a few of the films demonstrating the diverse offerings at the 2022 Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) happening online, and maybe a bit in-person, from Feb. 11 to 28.

The programming team for ALFF this year includes Andrew Connors, Yukon Film Society artistic director, Kinga Binkowska, programmer, and Siku Allooloo, associate programmer. I spoke with Connors and Binkowska and asked them what they considered to be the “must-see” films of the festival.

“Obviously we’re excited about all the films,” Binkowska says. “Every film is unique and everyone will find something different and will learn a lot.”

Still, Binkowska and Connors did highlight a few favourites that festival-goers won’t want to miss, beginning with a few exceptional international dramas: uThe Worst Person in the World is a Norwegian film directed by Joachim Trier that is winning awards at many of the big festivals. Cast member Renate Reinsve won Best Actress at Cannes.

“It’s a really entertaining film,” Binkowska says, “I would say it’s a romantic comedy for people who don’t like romantic comedies.” uBrighton 4th is a Georgian drama that follows a father on his journey from Georgia to Brooklyn to get his son out of a gambling debt. “It’s a really great, complex film,” Binkowska says.

thought-provoking, eye-opening environmental documentaries.

Connors highlights two related films by Indigenous filmmakers in B.C.

uScarborough is a story about the struggles of three children from different communities who meet in daycare. Directed by Rich Williamson and Shasha Nakhai, who is Filipino Canadian, the film had a mostly BIPOC cast and crew.

“It’s really deep and touching and a really impressive first-time feature from two diverse filmmakers.” Binkowska says. “It’s really remarkable, the way they made it. It’s beautiful, a really important story.”

uDƏNE YI’INJETL | The Scattering of Man reveals the devastating environmental, social and cultural impacts of the WAC Bennett Dam, which was built on the Peace River in 1968. It was built on the traditional territory of the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation. The story is told from the perspective of the community. Luke Gleeson, the filmmaker, is a member of the First Nation.

uWildhood, the festival opener, is a queer coming-of-age story. The film is written and directed by Two-Spirit L’nu filmmaker, Bretten Hannam.

“It’s really beautifully made,” Connors says. “It’s a journey film, a journey on foot. It’s a stunning, stunning debut.”

uWochiigii lo: End of the Peace comes to audiences from Heather Hatch, Haida filmmaker. It returns to the same river and the megaproject known as Site C Dam, which is currently underway. Hatch follows the efforts of members of the West Moberly First Nation as they battle with the B.C. government against the dam’s construction.

Wildhood ALFF is also a champion of northern film, including homegrown Yukon fare. uJessica Hall’s Rob is Analog, chronicles Rob Hopkin’s “quixotic quest to attain a CRTC license for an over-the-air community tv license.” It will have its world premiere at the festival.

uThere are also numerous northern shorts, including the northern premiere of Arctic Song, a stunning animation based on the graphic work of (and co-directed by) Germaine Arnattaujuq (Arnaktauyok), a Yellowknife-based Inuk artist.

The commitment to presenting northern and Indigenous films has created a following for ALFF beyond the Yukon. The unique programming is what distinguishes ALFF from other film festivals, says Binkowska, who works for the Vancouver International Film Festival as well.

“I’ve been following ALFF’s program for a few years and I always love it because I kinda feel that sometimes, on the Canadian film circuit, there are films that repeat themselves and I always enjoy finding new films by filmmakers from the North.”

“Honestly, it’s very unique that ALFF puts a focus on Indigenous films and diverse films, which is really great.”

“That’s been our intention for the last half dozen years,” Connors says. “We really made that our focus. You know, I’ll credit Vivian Belik, co-programmer and producer for many years, for helping build that.”

While Connors admits that “it’s a bummer” that most of ALFF has been moved online, Binkowska says there’s a silver lining in that the festival will be more accessible to folks who don’t live in Whitehorse, whether they’re in other communities or across the country.

And if the pandemic situation changes, ALFF organizers might be pivoting to present some films in the theatre this year. Ultimately, ALFF could be a hybrid festival that can be enjoyed by audiences both inside and outside of Whitehorse.

“We’re looking for the day we can do films both on-screen and online,” says Binkowska.

rica Dee Mah’s new album isn’t exactly a new album.

Titled The Sargasso Season, it’s made up of songs Mah wrote roughly a decade ago, but shelved after recording some demos.

“It wasn’t until lockdown days I revisited it,” Mah told What’s Up Yukon. “I gave it a listen with fresh ears and thought, ‘I would really like to finish this project.’”

Mah enlisted long-time collaborator Jordy Walker, with whom she had recorded the original demos of what would become The Sargasso Season, obtained some funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Yukon Government and Culture Quest, and set about turning her old ideas into a new record. Though Mah and Walker have worked together on several occasions before, this project was different than anything they’d done before, for many different reasons.

“On this project, I feel like I’m leaning into my classical training a bit more,” Mah said. “A lot of it is just really exploring the possibilities of a traditional instrument as a songwriting instrument.”

The traditional instrument in question here is the guzheng— a Chinese plucked zither, which usually has 21, 25 or 26 strings.

The Sargasso Season is Mah’s first record featuring the guzheng as the main songwriting instrument.

In exploring the possibilities of the instrument, Mah found herself connecting unexpectedly to her heritage. She equates it to

Erica Mah learning a language. Her intention was not to show off with the instrument, but to find a way to build songs around it that explore its potential and demonstrate its possibilities.

“I’m not a virtuoso player,” Mah admitted. “So, it’s not about showcasing really fancy techniques, but more about how we can wrap these songs really artfully and really enhance that imagery that goes with the songs.”

Mah was happy to work with Walker again, given the strong working relationship and creative chemistry the two have built up over the years “I love Jordy’s approach,” she said. “He’s just very curious about the possibilities of sound and he’s very easy to work with in that way. He brings such a creative ear to the process and I think he and I really feed off each other’s ideas.”

Mah performs guzheng and vocals, while Walker handles Rhodes, percussion, bass and piano. Additional musicians include Mah’s husband, Darcy McCord, on cello and vocals, Alana Martinson on violin and Toby Moisey on alto flute. Mah praised the work of all her collaborators,

saying the record, though it was her project, also felt like a team effort.

Part of the reason Mah shelved this project for such a long time was out of worry that it was too different from anything she’d done before. Though she is a multi-instrumentalist and has played in several different styles before, she felt The Sargasso Season was a complete departure from the rest of her catalogue, and those familiar with her past work might not understand it.

“I toyed with coming up with a band name or a pseudonym to separate it from my singer-songwriter work,” she said. “But, if anything, this album is even more me and I didn’t want to separate it from who I am.”

“The songs are rooted in my ancestry,” said Mah. “The music is rooted in the way I hear music.

Some people may be surprised, but I think that’s a good thing.”

The weight of wood

Y

ukon firewood is sold by the cord which, as everybody knows, is 4’x 4’ x 8’ or 128 cubic feet. Big companies such as sawmills, pulp mills and lumber producers buy and sell wood by weight using a very simple universal formula to calculate the value of the wood. Professional scalers know exactly how much each kind of tree is worth, from the heaviest (white oak at 5,580 lbs per cord) to the lightest which are larch pines weighing about ten pounds each.

According to Wikipedia, you will find the most common trees sold as firewood in the Yukon Taiga described thusly: “Boreal forests occur in the more southern parts of the taiga ecoregion that spreads across the northern parts of the world. The boreal forest zone consists of closed-crown conifer forests with a conspicuous deciduous element. The proportions of the dominant conifers (white and black spruces, jack pine, tamarack larch and balsam fir) vary greatly in response to interactions among climate, topography, soil, fire, pests, and perhaps other factors including floods.”

mid-septuagenarian Yukon retiree, 75, has three readily apparent options for a productive summer fitness program: 1. Fishing, 2. Golf or 3.

Firewood.

For the purposes of this piece, your participatory journalist chose the latter because he felt certain he needed at least a 10cord pile of good firewood close to the front door of the funky old cabin located northwest of Whitehorse, in the electoral district known as Grizzly Valley, within the considerable shadow of Pilot Mountain.

The contractor, 38, who supplied the raw 16” logs over the

course of the cutting season is a total marvel at his chosen profession and a Rembrandt in the ancient artform of shrinking dead trees to fit into pits and/or stoves.

For the fair price of $250 a cord, he delivered nine cords, one at a time, in his modified one-ton wood wagon. That fee is a rarity in this remote northern territory, well-known for speculative woodcutters, many of whom charge far more for tinder-dry swamp wood that burns like cardboard.

The fitness fun begins when the wood flies off his trusty truck upon delivery. It takes this old splitter/stacker 20 hours of slow, steady work to process each cord.

That means 10 days total because here is the secret to success with old, life-battered muscles: If you only work at it two hours per day, you can go all summer, May through October, from Monday to Friday with Saturdays optional and Sundays a mandatory day of rest, no exceptions. The pudding’s proof is in the pics. Remember this: Firewood is a marathon, not a sprint. n

After researching several other wood-buying sites, we averaged everything out and came up with these figures for the approximate weights of a cord of Yukon firewood: 4,250 lbs for green and 4,050 lbs for seasoned.

Any wood cut down between April 1 and Oct. 31 and dried for a minimum of two months can be sold as seasoned. Everything else is considered green. Any wood dried over six months under the midnight sun in summer is considered aged. All that coffee shop chatter about firekill vs beetle-kill is just Joe-talk between sips and bites. It doesn’t matter what killed the tree as much as when it happened.

The optimum amount of moisture content in firewood for maximum heat is 20 to 25 per cent depending on which source you trust.

In summary, our almost 11 cords of split and stacked firewood for the winter of 2022 weighed in at slightly more than 23.75 tons or 47,500 lbs.

That should satisfy just about anybody’s definition of a good summer workout …at least for a 75–year–old former working man with a worn-out Yukon back. n

Four versions of the 58th Yukon Rendezvous Festival are ready to roll

es, keep growing the beard and your leg hair, and dig out your garters and feathers—the Yukon Rendezvous Festival returns! The 58th annual event takes place in Whitehorse from Feb. 11 to 27. The storied festival, founded in 1964, has planned four possible versions of the festival this year, to quickly adapt to changing health regulations. Fittingly, the theme this year is The Great Outdoors.

Rendezvous plans a robust schedule of events and contests, including familiar favourites such as Pet Parade, Snow Carving, the mobile Can-Can line, Style and Strength contests, the Wrap-up Parade, Sourdough Sam show and the Fiddle Show.

Your dog will be happy to hear there will be no fireworks this year. Midnight Sun Fireworks Producers have released a statement saying, in part, “we’d like to thank Yukoners for all the support over the years, as well as our crew, whose countless hours of volunteer work have made it possible for us to create award- quality shows.” The one-hundred per cent volunteer fireworks specialists “look forward to providing you with the best pyro-musical in the Yukon yet in 2023.”

“All in all, my favourite part is the community.”

Regarding taking on this role, Knopf says it’s an honour. “I do not take this opportunity lightly. The Yukon can rest assured this is not my event to take and run with— Rendezvous is run by its board of directors and volunteers, and I am just here to help execute a great event for everyone who comes out.”

He added, “It has been great and a lot of fun! Getting to work with many of our fantastic sponsors, dedicated board of directors and staff to bring their vision of the festival to life has been an honour.” Unfortunately, this year won’t return to the full-blown Rendezvous of old, but he is hopeful it can be ramped up in the future, especially for the 60th anniversary festival.

As for the current situation, the Rendezvous team states that they cannot predict exactly how COVID will impact venue capacity.

According to the official website, Rendezvous will be enacting a policy for this Festival that will give the earliest in-person ticket purchasers seating priority in the cases of reduced capacity. For now though, tickets are for sale based on 50 per cent occupancy at all the venues.

Knopf advises that festivalgoers prepare for the unknown.

“In all seriousness, the COVID situation is changing very quickly,” he says. “Especially with the new variants. That means we really don’t know what our regulatory situation will be like for the last

half of February.”

Whatever happens, Rendezvous will be ready!

“Currently we have at least four different Rendezvous planned depending on the regulations we might be in come festival time,” says Knopf. “Keep up to date on the most recent festival plans and a watchful eye on our website (www.yukonrendezvous.com), or follow us on our various social media platforms.”

Rendezvous planners advise that live shows are already planned to run at a limited capacity and should the situation require a further reduction in seat count, first sold tickets will have priority and oversold tickets will be refunded. All Yukon Rendezvous 2022 shows will require proof of vaccination to enter and masks must be worn by all guests.

Knopf seems to take the stresses of co-planning a big festival during a global pandemic in stride.

DAY 3: Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk

ur journey to the Arctic Ocean finds my husband Ryan and I at the Gwich’in campground just outside of Inuvik. Our goal is to make it to

We pack up our camp area and start our journey into Inuvik. We drive through and are surprised how big the town is, however, we decide to return to explore later in the day. We aren’t sure of the road conditions and, as it’s quite arduous along the Dempster Highway, we don’t want to take any chances.

Once out of Inuvik, we are on the official Tuk Highway to the Arctic Ocean. Instantly the trees

disappear and only tundra and brush seem to be able to survive the harsh weather of the Arctic.

It feels like an alien planet as the windy road maneuvers through the permafrost landscape.

The road is in incredible condition as we start to approach the outside of Tuk’s town limits, where it quickly turns into a rutted nightmare. Again, I’m thankful I’m not driving and that we have a truck.

Once we arrive in Tuk, we note the drastic differences for those living in the Arctic. All the buildings are built on stilts due to permafrost heaving. The town has this eerie feeling of being on the edge of the world. To make it even more difficult, it’s Sunday, so nothing appears to be open. We find a small building with information. It isn’t open yet. We decide to head to the Arctic Ocean and it’s absolutely freezing cold!

The winds are a brutal force with nothing to stop them. There’s two other vehicles. Another tourist takes a snap of Ryan and I officially at the Arctic Ocean.

“So? Are you going to jump in?”

Ryan asks. “Maybe later,” I tell him.

We head to the information centre and get a map of Tuktoyaktuk and some tips on things to see and do in the town. Here’s the top list:

What is really cool is there’s estimated to be 11,000 pingoes in the world, but Tuktoyaktuk peninsula is supposed to have the largest number—1,350! I had no idea the little hills we saw along the way were pingoes!

Nor did I have any idea we literally drove past one several times in town. So it was time to “hike” up the pingo and get a slightly higher view of Tuk.

Tuktoyaktuk ... cont’d decide to eat in the truck. The muktuk is interesting. It doesn’t really have any distinct flavour, but the texture is chewy. I’m not a fan, but I’m sure it’s like when someone eats Vegemite from Australia!

After our visit in Tuk it’s time to head back to Inuvik to explore!

The most famous landmark is

the igloo church, known as Our Lady of Victoria Church. Unfortunately, you cannot go in to visit, but we got to admire the interesting architecture. We decide to park the truck and wander around the town, trying to locate something for dinner. As we walk, we note that they also have a community centre that looks eerily

similar to Whitehorse’s Canada Games Centre. Happy thoughts of a shower come to mind, so we decide to go and enjoy the facilities.

After we lose about an inch of muck from our bodies, we decide to go to the same campground to sleep before the journey back down south. n

4. Try muktuk at Grandma’s kitchen Tucked away we find Grandma’s kitchen (which is actually a little trailer). The kitchen is boarded up and we wonder if it’s not open because it’s Sunday. A man is standing there awkwardly and says, “my wife just went to go ask.” Minutes later the wife appears and says,”I just woke her up so she will be out soon.” It’s 2 p.m., but when you own your

own business, you can make your hours!

After about 20 minutes “Grandma” arrives and starts taking orders. The couple before us is told there is only one plate left of muktuk (boiled beluga whale blubber) and our hearts drop that they will take the food we wanted to try! However, the couple orders burgers and we rejoiced. We order muktuk and jerky.

nowing how to cook tofu is a great tool in the kitchen. Tofu is cheap and healthy. It can be cooked in fast and satisfying ways.

This crisp baked tofu can be used all over the kitchen—on salad, as part of a stir fry, dressed in a sticky sweet spicy sauce. It’s also great in these wicked easy vegetable packed rolls. I’ve kept these rolls filled with veg and not rice noodles to keep them on the lighter side, but feel free to throw in some rice noodles if you want to bulk them up a bit. Serves 4

STOP IN at 2157-2nd Avenue, Unit C

Set the oven at 425 degrees. Slice the tofu into 8 even pieces. Place between two towels and set a weight on top. Let the tofu drain for 10 to 30 minutes.

When tofu has drained, toss with sesame oil and soy sauce, then toss with cornstarch. Grease an ovenproof dish with olive oil and place the tofu in the dish. Cook for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through until tofu is crisp. Remove from the oven and let cool.

Place a moist towel on a cutting board. Fill a bowl with hot water and dip a sheet of rice paper in the water until it begins to soften.

Place the sheet on the towel and place a piece of tofu in the centre.

Top with sliced kale and sprouts, then wrap with the rice paper by bringing the sides together and rolling it up from front to back. Repeat with remaining ingredients and serve with desired sauce.

KDFN Citizen Kiri Geen builds a career in Hollywood North

DFN Citizen Kiri Geen says she got her first job in the film industry almost by accident. A friend was casting background extras-the people you see walking behind the main characters in a film scene-and Kiri stepped forward for the job. Little did she know that side gig would turn into a life-long love and lead her to a career in writing, acting and producing.

Kiri, who prefers to be called by her first name rather than her last, has been involved in the Vancouver film industry-affectionately known as Hollywood North-for a decade now. During that time, she’s been involved in hit shows, such as CBC’s Arctic Air. Kiri spent two years earning a Fine Arts diploma at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art in Terrace, BC. Now she is preparing for the debut of her new short film Kiri and the Girl, which she produced and co-wrote with collaborators Christopher Logan and Ken Shapkin.

“Chris and I wrote a script about a girl, we used my name (for the character), who has lost her mother,” explains Kiri, “She and her mother were very tapped in to the spirit world and her

“I think it’s amazing timing right now for a film like this because it’s such a positive story and it’s about healing, it’s about community, it’s about culture, it’s about healing through your culture. And I think it’s a good time, especially with the children being found right now, to have a positive message. And even my own personal healing journey, the majority of my healing has been done through ceremony and First Nations culture.”

Kiri and the Girl was a low budget, independent production.

As such, it came with its own unique set of challenges.

“Our biggest challenge, I think, was filming in the time of COVID,” says Kiri. “We had a lot of safety precautions and a lot of planning to make sure everybody was safe because we did have Elders and children on set. But it worked to our advantage.”

“I might sort of call it a COVID opportunity because we got the crew we wanted because the whole industry was shut down.”

Kiri’s dream cast and crew included director Grace Dove, an established First Nations actress who has been featured in The Revenant and Monkey Beach. And Whitehorse actor Tahmoh Penikett, who was a series regular on Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse. Up-and-coming actor Isla Grant plays the main character, Kiri.

The film may have an extremely talented and respected cast and crew, but its existence was never a guarantee.

“When we applied for the grant to the Canada Arts Council, we never thought we’d get it,” says Kiri, “But we spent five months researching which grant would work best for us.”

The hard work and dedication paid off. And, Kiri has some advice for those looking to pursue their dreams.

“Just take your time with these things and believe in yourself because you’re capable of more than you give yourself credit for,” she says. “It’s like bungee jumping: You’ve got to take that first leap. That’s the most terrifying, but once you do, it’s amazing.”

So far, Kiri and the Girl has screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Victoria Film Festival, the American Indian Film Festival, the San Francisco Film Festival and the St. Johns International Women’s Film Festival. n

DREAMLAND UNDERGROUND Process and progress

S

ometimes the key to appreciating art is understanding the process behind it. For example, there is a misconception that “anybody could make” a Mondrian painting because it seems like such a simple concept.

To grasp what Mondrian was trying to do with all the squares, rectangles and primary colours, it’s useful to follow his gradual progress from figurative art to purely abstract painting.

These days, at least in the Yukon, there is a similar misunderstanding about digital illustration.

For folks who aren’t familiar with the digital artist’s process, it may seem like the computer simply does all the work. It may seem like anybody could do it and it’s not “real” art.

For artists in the Yukon Illustration Coalition (YILCO), this misconception means their art might not be taken as seriously as fine artists, says Teagan Beemer, coalition member. It can impact everything from illustrators’ success in selling work, to their ability to obtain grants and exhibitions.

mented their pieces at different stages of completion. Then, in the exhibition, the various stages are exhibited next to the final version, so the viewer can see how the artist used the digital medium from beginning to end.

At the time of writing, I had access to images of the dreamland theme as interpreted by three of the artists: Beemer, Asia Hyde and Sheelah Tolton. All three of the artists take various explorations in fantasy, including a girl in the garden with friendly toadstools (Beemer); fairies in flight (Hyde); and a man discovering dragon eggs (Tolton). In comparing the work, it’s clear that the artists have unique artistic visions and distinguishable styles.

In Beemer’s “In the Garden,” the first stage of her process is a sketch with very simple lines and shapes. Beemer used a stylus to draw the sketch in her tablet, just as another artist might use a pencil. As the work progresses, more and more detail is added, including bright colours and dapples of light. The final piece is a charming illustration reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland.

That’s why Beemer pitched the idea to the coalition of having an exhibition that revealed the processes involved in creating digital illustrations. The show, Dreamland: Demystifying Digital Illustration, can be seen at Arts Underground from Feb. 4 to Feb. 26.

“Fine artists don’t have to explain how their work is created for it to be understood,” the coalition says in its online statement.

Dreamland is the coalition members’ efforts to explain their practice in order to be understood.

The exhibition is meant to help audiences see that making art in a digital format requires the same artistic skill and individual creativity as when using more traditional media such as oils, acrylic and watercolours.

For the exhibition, Beemer chose a broad subject theme (dreamland) so artists could have fun and interpret the idea however they wanted. As the artists created their work, they docu-

Whole,” begins with a simple sketch as well. However, her process differs from Beemer’s in that she began her sketch on paper before moving her work onto the computer. Hyde gradually added more detail, such as facial features and shadows, in the progressive versions of the work. Then she integrated muted blues and purples.

Tolton painted her piece using Photoshop on her tablet. You can see the different techniques that Tolton has used, similar to painting with a brush on canvas. Beemer points out that while she uses

simple, defined lines, Tolton uses a more painterly approach with visible brushstrokes creating shadows, shading and depth.

The tone of the works is also unique to each artist. Beemer’s illustration is marked by its cheerful, playful vibe, while Tolton’s is more realistic, with earthy colours and a darker mood. Hyde’s piece has a dreamy quality, with the fairies floating in a magical, moon-lit landscape.

ell … I have to admit, I may whine a little.

The straw has finally broken the camel’s back. It’s the mountains of snow that have played havoc at our place. There have been so many challenges and setbacks to deal with COVID. Like many Yukoners, I’m eager to escape to another planet, or tempted to hibernate for the rest of the winter. We keep asking ourselves when this will all end. My friends and family have brightened my day with words of encouragement, emails, funny YouTube links and phone calls. There are lots of valentines that go out to them.

After last month’s record snowfall, my husband used the ATV to plow the driveway on our rural property.

He plowed for about two or three days in a row and the driveway got more narrow with each pass of the blade. Twice, our neighbour came to push the snow back with his truck plow, but the accumulated snow was too much for the plow to have much impact.

Then we heard from a friend that Yukon Highways and Public Works provides a (schedule permitting) driveway clearing service for rural Whitehorse area seniors. Of course, top priority goes to clearing the highways and side roads and we thought we’d be waiting for a long time. We

Attracting a way through difficulties

T

hings haven’t been all that easy for us. We are years into a pandemic and well into the depths of winter. We are waking up to uncertainty and may feel afraid of that reality. This may leave us feeling fearful and stuck in our lives, unsure of the best way to move forward.

There are many approaches we can use to navigate these difficulties. We can go within to connect with our inner knowing through practices such as meditation. We can reach out to friends, counsellors and healers for additional support. We also have the option of reaching out to physical

objects for help.

For instance, a culturally universal and age-old practice is the use of talismans. A talisman is a physical object that holds specific meaning and intention. They are considered to have magical powers and can attract desirable qualities into a person’s life, including love, peace and abundance.

Most talismans are for personal use. Think a necklace pendant, ring, or pocket-sized stone. However, talismans can also be found in bigger settings and spaces, including inside buildings or in architecture, to attract a group or community’s desire.

Talismans are man-made objects and can be made from a variety of materials, even paper.

That being said, many believe it is important for talismans to be made from materials aligned with their intended meaning. The idea is that the material itself brings about the manifestation. As such, the talisman maker may choose to use specific plants, metals or gemstones, or create the talisman in a specific colour. Others believe that talismans can be made from any material and that it is the charging of meaning into the talisman that is more important.

In addition to what it is made from, there are many ways in which an owner can be empowered by using a talisman. When the owner believes in the talisman’s power, it can provide them the additional courage and commitment they need to move toward their goal. The physicality of the talisman also reminds the owner of their desire, increasing their focused attention on what they want to manifest. This focus

of awareness can change the owner’s perspective and can activate their intentions through the subconscious mind. Where on the body one wears a talisman is also of significance. The act of wearing a talisman as a necklace pendant, for example, keeps the intention close to the heart. In addition, the talisman shows respect to the unseen world, through embodiment of meaning. The owner’s effort itself to honour and communicate with the unseen can attract a favourable response from the spiritual realm.

Some talisman makers even infuse astrological content into talismans. Similar to how we have astrological charts, based on the date and time we were born, an astrological talisman is thought to embody its own astrology. This kind of talisman is believed to come into the world with specific astrological energy that ripples out into the owner’s reality, attracting certain attributes. Those who make these kinds of talismans will create the object on a specific day and time to reflect the purest form of the desired astrological meaning.

Although very similar, an amulet, which is also a physical object of meaning, is commonly used to keep away unwanted qualities from the owner. Talismans may, like amulets, prevent unwanted energies from approaching the owner, but the talisman does so by attracting protective energy to the wearer, rather than deflecting the unwanted energy away like an amulet. talisman impels or enhances the owner’s powers. Today, the word talisman is used more broadly and may include amulets.

The word talisman originated in the 1630s and refers to a magical engravement in the object that is made under certain observances.

Its origins speak to consecration ceremony and rite of passage, inferring that talismans were used in transformative ceremonies.

The Ancient Greek root tilsam, for example, means “initiate into the mysteries.”

Given that talismans have magical and mystical origins, many believe that it is important not to take the creation and wearing of talismans lightly. Out of respect for their potential power, there are many resources one can read to learn more about talismans before advancing.

Interestingly, talisman also has Greek roots in teleos, meaning the end, or fulfillment and completion, and kwel from Indo-European origins, meaning to revolve, move around and dwell. Ancient language origins of kwel, such as Sanskrit and Norse, describe the word’s meaning as cycle of events, wheel, road or way through.

Based on these ancient origins, it appears that, in addition to attracting and nurturing our desired experience of the world, talismans may also help us find our way through difficulties. The talisman reminds us that events are cyclical and the magic of life remains available to us, no matter where in the mix we may find ourselves. n

2021 Eagle Gold Mine Results 2021 resulted in numerous achievements at Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold Mine as the team continued to navigate challenges brought on by the global pandemic.

Last year, annual gold production at the Eagle Gold Mine, which employs hundreds of Yukoners, many of whom are women and Yukon First Nations citizens, was 164,222 ounces; a 41 per cent increase over 2020.

“COVID-19 has had a significant impact on operations at the Eagle Gold Mine in 2021, however our team has been very innovative adjusting to conditions and we achieved record annual gold production,” says Victoria Gold Corp President & CEO John McConnell. “This year will undoubtedly present new opportunities and challenges and I look forward to working with our team to continue the steady growth we have realized since the mine began operations.”
