agic is coming to Tombstone this summer.

“Art Magic in Tombstone” is a series of workshops hosted by the Friends of Dempster Country society, and Yukon Parks, and will take place in Tombstone Territorial Park/ Ddhäl Ch’èl Cha Nän, throughout the summer. The workshops will be held on Saturdays at 10 a.m., with a small fee for materials.

Friends of Dempster Country is a non-profit society that aims to encourage appreciation of the natural and cultural history of Dempster Country. It is the tenth year that Friends has collaborated with Yukon Parks.

“Yukon Parks acts as host, advertises and provides the space and resources, while Friends coordinates the call-out and expressions of interest for the workshops, and obtains funding,” said Molly MacDonald, a board member of Friends.

“The workshops are about the artist’s artistic process and connecting it to their experience with Tombstone or nature elsewhere,” said MacDonald.

“They try to tie in the workshops with what’s going on in the park already.”

S

o you think you can’t get lost ... Well, I know some experienced hunters who have spent years hunting in the backlands who have gotten lost. I have also found myself lost, but that was due to an injury and panic.

You go afield without your magnetic compass or GPS, it is an overcast day and you find yourself lost. You quickly look at your watch to see how much time there is until evening darkness, but what you don’t realize is that your watch is actually a compass.

By the way, both my wife Lisa and I will stop a GPS. I still have a compass where the magnetic fields in my body have actually reversed the direction of the needle. I had been mapping out a deer yard, and after a couple of hours I looked at the compass only to find that the needle was slowly turning in a circle. Whether that was from my body or because I was in a particular area where specific metal contents were, I never figured out. In 1950 I did have the unfortunate accident of being hit by lighting, and often when I touch another person there is that surprising “Wow!” that comes from them when there is a little shock.

If you have a dial watch, you also have a compass. The key to

using your watch for a compass when you can see the sun (or even on a overcast day when you can see a cloud illuminated by the sun) is to point the hour hand directly at the sun. Next, divide in half the angle between the hour hand and twelve o’clock. You now have an imaginary line pointing north and south.

For example, if it’s quarter to 4, the imaginary line will run through 2 and 8. The sun has passed the south position but not yet reached the west position.

The south is on the same side as four o’clock and therefore south is on the two o’clock line.

Another way to find north is to carefully take note of a few of the tree trunks. Normally, and note that I say normally, moss grows on the north side trunks.

This is because the north side gets less sun. Use this method in open country and not in the shade of a bush. And it is important that you check a number of tree trunks, not just a single tree.

A month or so before hunting season, get out of those everyday shoes and start walking in hunting or bush-friendly boots . Walking a few kilometres each day in comfortable running shoes does not mean your legs and feet will carry you in the same comfortable

manner while walking in the bush.

First off, you will be wearing heavier socks and heavier boots.

And the ground is going to be a lot rougher. Your clothing will be heavier as well.

Now is the time to get those hunting clothes and boots out and walk on bush trails rather than on paved city trails. Remember, you may be carrying a firearm that will add an additional seven pounds to your overall weight ... so, like the Boy Scouts, “Be Prepared!”

Many people buy a single coat for cold weather. The best way to buy clothing for the outdoors is to buy layers for outdoors. This way you will not only save money in the long run, but you will be prepared for whatever weather you have to contend with. Remember, you are in the bush and not on a paved trail. Weather can change throughout the day, so one layer is not the way to go for many reasons. The worst thing will you have to contend with is sweat. If you get too warm, take a layer or two off. If you get chilled, put an extra layer back on. It’s just that simple.

A tip when going into the backlands: The best way to start a campfire with two sticks is to make sure one of them is a match.

he Yukon’s annual electronic Paradise Music Festival is back and is set to take off July 27–29 at Kettley’s Canyon, at Marsh Lake.

The Paradise Electronic Music Festival was born 13 years ago after festival founder, organizer and local DJ, Kevin Jack (who goes by the stage name of DJKJ), decided it was time to create a space where Yukon artists in the local electronic music scene could showcase their talent.

“Paradise was created from one of my best friends, Stevie Wonder,” Jack shared. The two DJ’ed alongside each other for years and played numerous shows together in local venues. “Stevie was about to move to Vancouver and we threw him a wicked goodbye party at Kettley’s Canyon, and from that I saw the real potential to do something more and it just grew from there,” Jack explained.

Jack was born and raised in the Yukon and started getting into the music scene about 18 years ago.

He has played gigs from Victoria, to Haines, all the way to rooftop clubs in Mexico and, of course, continues to perform regularly at local venues, such as Antoinette’s; and the Miner’s Daughter, here in Whitehorse.

The festival itself was founded to showcase Yukon talent in the electronic music scene but has grown exponentially within the past couple of years. It is also about building an inclusive place where everyone is accepted and celebrated. Jack has been DJing and producing music for 18 years now, and has also been a highlight performer at the event each year.

“Being a DJ is a full-time job; it is a hobby that I absolutely love and am so grateful for where I am at with it,” Jack said.

The Paradise Music Festival is a not-for-profit organization that is fueled by an amazing team of specialists and volunteers. This year, the festival aims to create more of a daytime atmosphere.

The festival will be offering daytime yoga workshops with Breath of Life yoga studio. Local art vendors will also be set up around the location, along with Lulu’s delicious food truck. The festival will also host a horseshoe tournament, along with life-size games of Jenga and Twister. A concession will also be running on location throughout the weekend.

The Paradise Electronic Music

Festival is an age-19-plus event and tickets are on sale and available for the 2018 festival at Triple J’s Music, Tattoos & Piercing, Dean’s Music, and the Yukon, North of Ordinary Experience Centre. People can also Facebook message the official page and arrange for tickets to be hand-delivered to their door!

Camping is available all weekend on the festival grounds, and camping spots are included in the festival pass for the weekend.

The festival will also have fullservice food vendors on-site and a shuttle service available for festival attendees. Authors on Eighth celebrates Klondike literature

E

ach summer the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA), working with the Dawson Community Library and the Writers’ Trust of Canada, honours the memory of four writers who have meant a great deal to the public profile and history of Dawson City and the Klondike: Jack London, Robert W. Service, Pierre Berton and Dick North.

The event begins with a writing contest, the rules of which were announced on May 30 in a press release inviting all writers to showcase their writing talents by writing “a northern-inspired piece of poetry or prose.” The contest will end on July 31, 2018, and winners will be announced at the annual Authors on Eighth Walking Tour on August 16.

Last year there were 29 entries in the event, from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and several countries in Europe. The Klondike Sun has been publishing the entries, beginning with the winners (alternating prose and poetry) since last September, and hopes to have them all in print before it’s time to begin the 2018 entries.

don Museum; Parks Canada, which manages the Robert Service Cabin; and the Writers’ Trust of Canada, which finances and manages the Berton House Residency with the assistance of the KVA and the Dawson Community Library.

Campfire Recipes with Sydney Oland

Pull-apart salami and anchovy bread T

his sandwich/pizza hybrid, stuffed with anchovy and salami, is a perfect riverside snack when you’re feeling a bit famished and the fish haven’t been biting.

All of these ingredients are pretty shelf stable—even a slightly old loaf of bread will come back to life when it’s packed with sauce and cheese. If you’re not an anchovy fan, leave them out; but if you’re trying to expand your horizons, give them a try in this recipe. They’re delicious across from the salami, and if you regret including them, they’re easy to pick off.

Have two pieces of foil on hand. Slice bread in a cross-hatch pattern, ¾ of the way through the loaf. Spread pizza sauce into slices, followed by salami, then shredded cheese. Sprinkle with oregano and red-pepper flakes. Top with anchovy filets and season with salt and pepper, then wrap loaf with foil so that the top piece of foil is easily removable.

I

’ve only experience skydiving back home in Australia when I was 17 years old. As the plane ascends into the sky, your heartbeat races with anticipation as the ground gets farther and farther away. You’re strapped to a “stranger” that you will entrust your life to, and as you shuffle towards the plane’s door, your heart beats into your throat as though it will pump out of your body. The doors whoosh open and the wind takes your breath away.

“You ready?!” the instructor yells rhetorically, as though you have a choice, and out of the plane you descend in freefall, adrenalin pulsing through your body. As the land draws closer and closer, like a terrifyingly exhilarating dream, there’s the sudden sharp pull upwards, of safety, as the parachute is released and you feel like a soaring bird overlooking mountains and lakes.

Bucket List: Skydive in the Yukon...

“Skydiving has always been popular and it has just now come back on the scene in Yukon, thanks to Skydive BC agreeing to come north to teach classes,” said Chani Fleshman, member of the Yukon Sport

Parachute Association [YSPA].

“The background of skydiving in the Yukon dates back to the late 1970s, but nothing consistent has ever been offered here. Recently the skydivers in Yukon started Yukon Sport Parachute Association to promote the sport in the Yukon.”

Skydive BC is based in Prince George and teaches tandem and solo first-jump courses. Yukon skydivers have been supporting the efforts of Skydive BC in travelling to the Yukon to teach classes, as this opportunity is not currently available here and would not exist without them.

The YSPA was formed in April 2018 and they currently have 14 members and counting. “The goal for our organization is to promote regular skydive events within Yukon,” said Fleshman. “We want

as many opportunities to share our beautiful land with the sports community (which stretches around the world) as possible.

Skydivers are a kind bunch who seek joy and spread it with others … something I really like about the sky community … purely sharing our joy and love of the sport.”

What’s involved in skydiving?

First, you must decide what kind of jump you want to do: tandem or solo? If you are only going to jump once, then a tandem jump is recommended. If you think you may want to take up skydiving, you can sign up for the solo class.

A tandem skydive is where you, the passenger, are along for the ride under the same parachute as a trained tandem skydiver. These jumps are taken from a higher altitude than the solo jump and allow for the freefall time before the parachute is open.

A solo jump requires more pre-jump training but allows the student to operate their own parachute landing under supervision and radio instruction. The solo jump is done from a lower altitude, focusing on the student’s canopy ride (with

Neither solo nor tandem students need to worry about pulling their own parachute on their first jump, which is where the instructors come in. If you are on a tandem, follow the instructions of your tandem master, as they will pull the parachute (you are just along to enjoy the freefall, the canopy ride and the beautiful view). If you are a solo student, the instructor begins the deployment of your parachute when you leave the plane.

If you are a tandem student, training is shorter but costs more.

The tandem instructor will brief you on procedure and body position, answer any questions and set you up with gear for the jump.

Although this could be as quick as an hour or two, depending on the weather, prepare for a whole day.

The solo course takes a whole day, including the first jump, de-

pending on weather, class size and how quickly students become familiar with procedures. Times can be booked, although weather delays are always possible and completely beyond anyone’s control.

Prepare to spend the day— bring snacks, meals and drinks.

There are many local businesses to check out in Carcross, as well, and the beautiful beach and other sights.

Skydive BC will be in Carcross July 20–August 20. They will be jumping daily, weather permitting, and want to help folks achieve their goals and make some checks on their bucket lists.

Celebrating 30 years of northern art and artists

First Nations artists and performers, from across the North, will gather with artists from around the world for the Great Northern Arts Festival on July 13–22

his summer marks almost 30 years of the Great Northern Arts Festival. The annual arts festival is held every summer in the vibrant town of Inuvik, from July 13 to 22, at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex. Each year, artists and performers from First Nations across the North, along with artists from around the world, gather for approximately 10 days in a shared celebration for the arts.

The Great Northern Arts Festival is a venue where artists can see and be exposed to each other’s work. It allows artists to

reconnect with long-lasting ones within the art world. The festival includes and encourages art of all types, from fibre arts to the performing arts.

Participants involved partake in master classes, demonstrations, seminars and workshops.

And the festival’s gallery offers pieces for sale. The festival also features cultural presentations every evening, which include storytelling, music, dance, concerts and fashion. The festival even has media coverage, bringing festival highlights to viewing audiences.

Given the remote location of most northern communities, the Northern Arts Festival gives artists and craftspeople from these areas a chance to access markets and buyers, as well as to attend professionaldevelopment seminars and workshops. The Great Northern Arts Society not only offers workshops and seminars on art, but they also offer workshops and seminars on pricing, marketing, creativity, artist biography writing, funding sourcing and grant-writing, artistic integrity and many other informative subjects.

This year, three Whitehorsebased artists will be attending the Great Northern Arts Festival. Karen Nicloux is one of the three who will be travelling to Inuvik to participate in the 10-day event. She is proficient in the art of embroidery, traditional sewing and beadwork. Karen was born in Mayo, Yukon, and belongs to the First Nation of Na-cho Nyak Dun. She is Northern Tutchone and a member of the Wolf Clan, and is also part Cree on her father’s side.

Another local artist who will be attending the festival from Whitehorse is Blair Thorson. Blair’s art consists of watercolors painted on maps, which feature subjects

Visitors to the Great Northern Arts Festival in 2017 were treated to traditional First Nations music, dance and arts and crafts that are Indigenous to the area illustrated, or objects of cultural or historical interest. His artwork echoes the northern lands in which he lives and has explored.

He also incorporates the element of copper into his artwork to help emphasize the story of his paintings.

Local artist, Vanessa Aegirsdoriir, will also be participating in this summer’s Great Northern Arts Festival. She is a textile artist with over 20 years experience working with yarn, fabric and other fibre-based media. She hand spins her yarns on a spinning wheel and uses a hand-built frame loom to produce her tapestries.

Certain of her works include metallic elements like copper thread

and leaf, as well as embroidery and floral eco-printing.

This year around 40 artists will participate in the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, from all across the North and around the world.

Odessa Beatty is a writer at What’s Up Yukon. She is currently a student at McGill University; however, she was born and raised in the Yukon.

Return of the Kingdom Vancouver heavy metal band Iron Kingdom to play four Yukon shows this July

n the beginning, there was Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motörhead, arguably the three most important bands in the history of metal music. The 1970s saw the rise of a dominant new scene, referred to as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, or NWOBHM. Decades later, metal music and culture has grown into a global phenomenon, with many new forms of the music taking charge over generations. One band with a mission to keep the sound of traditional heavy metal thriving is Iron Kingdom.

“Traditional heavy metal is what we grew up admiring and falling in love with,” said Chris Osterman, who sings and plays guitar for the quartet. “There’s

something about the sounds and vibes, the stage shows and the raw energy of it all. We want people in today’s age to be able to experience that type of performance from a young and hungry act.”

Hailing from Vancouver, Iron Kingdom will be travelling up to the Yukon for the third time, to play four concerts on their Enter Eternity 2018 tour—two in Whitehorse and two in Dawson. Osterman and other Iron Kingdom members pride themselves in being the band “leading the charge of the Rising New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal movement.”

“People should be able to go see a show that’s reminiscent of what it was like in the glory days of the 1970s and ’80s, but also with that twist of something fresh and new!” says the commanding frontman.

Iron Maiden vocalist, Blaze Bayley, who replaced Maiden’s classic lineup’s singer, Bruce Dickinson, from 1994 until 1999. Iron Kingdom is a band that fits well on a tour with a Maiden frontman, as, according to Osterman, at least one fan has described the band’s sound as a child of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. “... It’s a strange concept, I know, but Iron Kingdom would be born from it,” he says with a laugh.

After playing in the Yukon twice before, Osterman feels he knows what to expect from the crowds the band will draw in. A territory with a surprising number of metalheads lurking about is a safe bet for any touring headbangers to draw in a good crowd and share the energy of an electric show.

“We’re expecting to see everyone having a great time, but, hon-

estly, I don’t think the people of the Yukon have any trouble with that, haha!” said Osterman.

Iron Kingdom will be performing at Epic Pizza on Thursday, July 19 and Sunday, July 22, as well as at The Pit in Dawson City on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. This brings up another point— how does the pollen get moved around? We are constantly amazed at the tenacity of our wild bumblebees— they will fly in weather that would ground a seasoned bush pilot.

Back at the market, this has all got me musing on the growing recognition of the non-duality of gender when it comes to our own species. I apply m/f gender to my trees all the time: She’s got lots of fruit; he’s got a lovely form.

Perhaps that’s outdated. It’s definitely animal-centric. I think I’ll go sit under one of them and ask … maybe they will tell me what they like to be called.
