h e n I was a kid I rarely got mail.

And when I did, it was usually a card from a relative or a note from a pen-pal.

These letters came in packages of different shapes and sizes and would usually have an off-kilter, hand-written address adorning the centre of the envelope. Such addresses provided clues as to the identity of the sender. For example, if it was a girl, the mailing instructions might be written in fat, loopy cursive; if it was a boy, it might be impatient chicken-scratch.

My Grandpa had an efficient, ALL-CAPS style that was rendered ever-so-slightly shaky by the affects of arthritis. My method of printing owes much to his.

If the letter sender was particularly diligent, the envelope might also feature small drawings or stickers to increase the individuality of the article.

Despite the inherent differences of these pieces of mail, most of them had two things in common: they were heartfelt expressions of affection, and they went grossly unappreciated by me.

In those days, whichever of my parents picked up the mail would place it on the edge of the dining room table so that the other parent could leaf through the bundle when the opportunity presented itself. This mail-drop location allowed me to see what “adult mail” looked like, and I was jealous.

Their correspondence was not an assortment of higgledypiggledy envelopes; most of their letters came in standardized, offwhite, 4” X 8” envelopes — projecting power.

The style of letter they I most romanticized was the kind that came in an envelope with a clear plastic window on the left hand side. The exact size and location of this window varied, depending on the institution sending the letter, but they were generally about one inch high and four inches long.

Peering out from behind this window would be my parent’s name and address, in perfectly uniform computer font.

To me, these letters symbolized prestige and importance and I couldn’t wait until I started receiving them. Now I receive them all the time. In fact for each thoughtful, personalized piece of mail I get, I probably get 10 of those envelopes with the clear plastic windows.

What I know now is that such envelopes rarely contain good news. Rather they are overwhelmingly composed of bills, statements, and other documents reminding me I am only hanging on to middle-class status by my fingernails.

It would be easy to laugh off my childhood reverence of clear plastic windows as an example of the adorable naivety, but I don’t think I’ve learned much. I still unduly romanticize other people’s situations.

The chasm between what I perceived clear plastic windows to be and what they actually were is a good reminder to find small satisfactions in my present station in life.

And to write more letters.

ce climbing is a cold, miserable activity to do; these days technology makes it more comfortable, but still, you’re climbing up a frozen piece of water.”

Chris Grishler is doing everything he can to make ice-climbing appeal to the masses in Whitehorse.

Grishler is the owner of Equinox Adventures, the company that erected six ice towers behind Boston Pizza. He saw a picture of an ice tower once, and then built one in his backyard. He’s been building them every winter for 13 years now.

Equinox had been operating at Takhini Hotsprings, but now the company has space at Waterfront Station, near the Blackbird Bakery.

And Northern Vision Development let Grishler use one of its empty lots for his ice towers.

“In a few years this will be condos.” Grishler laughs.

Bringing the towers downtown lets more people see them, and the city setting gives the operation a different feel.

“So you’re up on the towers and you look one way, you see wilderness, Yukon-esque scenery, and then you look the other way and you see all these buildings

More people have been coming out to climb, and try climbing, since the towers have been in the city. But Grishler says it’s still overbearing for people to put on the harness, crampons, get roped in, and scale up the towers with pick axes.

So three towers are kept for climbing, and two are for Ice Treks. These towers have walkways leading up a level, then there are caves and a walkway and stairs. Everything is made of ice.

Tours are led up the stairs, through the tunnels — everyone connected to a safety line. Then there are two ziplines to get people back down to the ground.

eep in the woods, mysterious trees grow. They have a deformity that makes them more valuable. No, the dark arts are not at work, but rather the magic of Mother Nature, and the growth of burls, roundish outgrowths in trees. Most burls are found in hardwood.

Once the burl is split, unique artistry stretches from one end to the other. No two burls have the same pattern. This is where the perfection lies.

Furniture makers and artists search to find the perfect burl.

Due to their exclusivity, burls cost much more than normal trees.

Some run upwards of $70/pound.

They are used in furniture finishing, luxury vehicles, and art sculptures. Not only is the wood rare, it takes a skilled artisan to craft it. Burls have lots of twists and knots in the wood, due to the deformed wood grain. If you are going to create something from burl-wood you should know what you are doing.

So high is the demand that burls are sometimes subject to poaching. It seems burls have become the new ivory.

So how exactly does a burl form?

When a tree contracts an excessive growth hormone, it begins to deform. A large bulge forms on the outside of the trunk. Once the burl has reached maturity, it can be cut off from the trunk, and then split into pieces. Burls vary in size, in fact, some can grow to over 20 feet wide.

They can be found in Asia, Scotland, Wales, and many regions in America and Canada. Some of the popular designs stem from oak, maple, and redwood trees.

Meet Dennis Parent, a Whitehorse resident who co-owns some burls with a friend.

“My buddy and I were on a hunting trip and that’s where we came across them,” he says.

The burls themselves are located a few hundred kilometers outside of Whitehorse and are a bit spread out. But Parent knew they were a gem find.

“A lot of people who are into crafts have been buying them, we also have made some walking

St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Dawson City

ovember and most of December were mild in the Klondike this winter.

Wondrously, it only took two-anda-half days to warm up St. Paul’s Anglican Church enough to have a comfortable ecumenical Christmas Eve pageant. The building is primarily heated by a large, hungry wood stove. After the chill is off, and the temperature is up to zero, we turn on a couple of oilfired monitors to speed the process.

What worked at Christmas, when the temperature hovered in the minus teens, didn’t work as well about a week later when we had to heat the building again to hold a funeral service.

At that point, the temperature had dropped into the negative30s. Two day’s heating was not enough; people couldn’t take off heavy coats. Sitting in the choir, I would have appreciated another sweater.

Barring another funeral, we probably won’t use the pro-cathedral (the official name for the building that used to be the Angli-

can cathedral in the Yukon) again until Easter. It’s too expensive and too much work to heat the large building for weekly services. In the winter, we gather next door in the smaller Richard Martin Memorial Chapel. It can be crowded, but we take that as a sign that people are interested in what is being offered.

Nevertheless, the main building was constructed in 1902 (making it a designated National Historic Site), and has had to suffer the rigours of the Klondike climate ever since. It stands to reason that a fair amount of repair and maintenance will be required. Over the past nearly 20 years the congregation has undertaken projects to both improve and maintain the properties, which, along with the church and the chapel, include the Anglican thrift store, which is attached to the chapel, as well as Skinner House, the rectory.

The church was originally constructed with funding from the placer miners of the Gold Rush era, but the money needed to fix the roof, add some fans to improve

the heating system, reinstall rain gutters to prevent wood rot, and repaint the building, isn’t going to come from that source these days.

The congregation has been raising money through projects like recycling efforts, yard sales, and pancake breakfasts.

But, as with most projects of this nature, much of the funding will have to come from a variety of federal, territorial, agency, and denominational grants. The restorations and building committee has been spent many hours preparing grant applications. Local contractors generously provide estimates and advice. Much of the paperwork has been filed as of the date I am writing this column, and now we await the results of our endeavours.

The Pros and Cons of RRSPs vs. TFSAs It’s time to make a contribution toward your retirement and other savings goals.

Which savings vehicle is the best option?

It’s a perennial challenge for many Canadians — contribute to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Ideally, you should be making regular contributions to one or both throughout the year as part of a plan you’ve worked out with a financial advisor. If, however, you have some extra cash available, here’s a quick summary of the benefits and considerations of each option.

RRSP Pros and Cons RRSP contribution limits for Canadians continue to increase every year. Your allowable contribution is 18% of your earned income from the previous year to a maximum of $24,270 for 2014, $24,930 for 2015 and $25,370 for 2016. You may also be able to tap into any unused contribution room you have carried forward from previous tax years.

That allowable contribution is deducted from your gross taxable income for the year and you may end up with a tax refund (which many recommend putting right back into your RRSP for next year or even a portion into your TFSA). This makes an RRSP an ideal first choice for savings especially for high-income earners.

On the other hand, an RRSP only defers payment of income tax until your retirement years and forced annual withdrawal amounts after age 71 may reduce government old age benefits. Those with a rich pension plan, working in retirement or major sources of alternative income may want to consider additional savings options, such as a TFSA, in consultation with a financial advisor.

TFSA Pros and Cons The TFSA is an all-purpose way to invest as it can be used to save for any financial goal. Canadians can invest up $5,500 annually and carry-forward any unused contribution room. While that annual contribution is not tax-deductible, any growth in your TFSA investments is sheltered from taxation even when money is withdrawn.

Unlike the RRSP, you can withdraw TFSA money without paying tax at any time and, best of all, the full amount of any withdrawals can be put back into your TFSA in future years (but not the same year). So, if your $5,500 investment grows to $10,000 and you withdraw it tax-free, you can turn around the next year and put $10,000 (plus another $5,500) back into your TFSA to continue growing.

Also, unlike the RRSP, income earned in a TFSA and amounts withdrawn do not affect your eligibility for federal income-tested benefits and credits, such as Old Age Security or the Canada Child Tax Benefit. As well, unlike the RRSP, you don’t have to withdraw any money from your TFSA after age 71, so it is a great savings tool for seniors.

The chief disadvantage to a TFSA is that your contributions are not tax-deductible, so you don’t receive the immediate tax benefit seen with an RRSP. There is also no such thing as a TFSA spousal plan, but you can still give your spouse or common-law partner money to invest in their own TFSA, and the income earned on the contributed amount is not attributed back to you.

The Bottom Line The RRSP continues to make good sense as a first savings option for many investors. That said, a TFSA offers interesting investment opportunities for high income earners, those nearing retirement as well as seniors. It may also be valuable to investors with lower incomes or those needing to access cash at any moment without penalty.

Dessert and Dance will feature performances by the All City Band and the Whitehorse Big Band

M

any of us were introduced to dessert combined with music was through Tchaikovski’s Nutcracker. Imagery of Spanish chocolate, sugar plum fairies, lemonade waters, and a kingdom of sweets delights viewers while the orchestra plays on.

Fast forward to the present day — another combination of dessert and music can be found in Whitehorse. Simply titled Dessert and Dance, the beat swinging annual event takes place on February 14 at the Mount McIntyre Rec Centre.

Dessert and Dance will feature performances from the All City Band and the Whitehorse Big Band. This year will be the 11th event; proceeds fund the All City Band for an upcoming cantando festival in Nelson, BC. In addition to the swinging sounds, a silent auction will be held. And, of course, a wide variety of home-

made pies and cakes will be available to tempt taste buds. The Whitehorse Curling Club will also be operating a cash bar.

Facilitating the event is trumpeter Tristan Fox. The musician has been playing the trumpet since seventh grade and has never looked back.

“Honestly, I chose to play the trumpet because it has three keys.

At the time, the other choice of clarinet was bit intimidating due to its 36 keys,” he says.

He’s also learned a little French horn and baritone, but he remains true to his trumpeter craft.

In the past Fox has traveled to many music festivals to play with the All City Band, but this year he will be taking a break.

“Right now it’s all about looking after my small children, so if I have to make a personal sacrifice for my family, that’s alright.”

Life on the road is never easy,

especially for family men. However, since Fox loves the trumpet and All City Band so much, he is happy to be on board in any way he can.

“I hope everyone comes out for excellent entertainment and dessert,” he says.

As for Fox’s favourite dessert — he loved turtle cheesecake.

I don’t want to make any promises, but if the facilitator of the event has a favourite dessert, there might be some turtle cheesecake hanging around.

Dessert and Dance takes place Saturday February 14. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and are available at Dean’s Music Strings, Riverside Grocery, and online at allcityband.com.

We often receive three, sometimes four, different catalogues every winter, often before Christmas. But it isn’t until January that I am able to sit down and enjoy them.

what vegetables are grown in what plots. This prevents the soil from becoming diseased, and keeps the pests on the move, so they don’t take over.

But mapping out the gardens has another purpose as well — it is a visual way to dream of spring and summer. Deciding on the plots for the peas or potatoes takes very little time, but choosing varieties of peas and potatoes takes longer. Even if we intend to use the same cultivars as the year before, it’s always enjoyable to see what is new, or what might work even better.

Living in the North, I look for vegetable varieties that can stand our cold soils and variable weather. I look at where the seed is coming from, too — seeds have a “memory” of the climate their parent plant grew in, and they adjust to that climate. Growing heat tolerant cabbages won’t necessarily benefit us here, but growing cabbages that come from, say, the mild winters of the BC coast might; however cold our summers are here, they often aren’t as cold as winters there.

This is one reason saving seeds from our plants is a very good thing — they have Yukon summers logged in their memories; They’ll be better suited to deal with Northern idiosyncrasies.

I look to grow heirloom seeds as well; their memories stretch back for generations, and they remember a variety of climate conditions. Sometimes they’ve acclimatized to more than one continent. They are the tried-

and-true varieties grown for their taste, hardiness, and storability over long winters.

Seed catalogues also educate the gardener on the needs of each vegetable, often with a short write-up on the basics of growing the vegetable — when to plant it, how far apart, and when to harvest. The catalogue lists the nutritious needs of each plant, and sometimes they even say which plants make good companions.

An interesting part of a seed catalogue is the area, usually in the back, where gardening paraphernalia is found. There are tools for everything from starting the seeds to attracting birds, insects, and bats to the garden; tools used for every task in the garden, including decorative touches.

This is where the dreaming starts to take off.

Who wouldn’t want to stretch out on a hammock in the warm summer breeze, watching the humming birds as they feed from the nectar feeder? Or listening to the buzz of pollinating insects as they hop from flower to flower, all the while reading yet another book on gardening, under the midnight sun?

T

o descend the stairs into Bear’s Paw Quilts is to descend into colour. Quilts and colourful fabric samples line the walls.

This is more than a fabric store.

It’s a school, and a conduit to a world where quilting is the art of choice.

Quilter, business owner, and teacher Ruth Headley attributes Bear’s Paw’s twelve years of success to a team of knowledgeable quilters who work in the shop.

They’re a community.

Like the Yukon, Bear’s Paw has two main seasons. From September to April, the store hosts a class every night of the week.

In April, the sun shines, and “a lot of quilters quit for the summer”.

Then Bear’s Paw waits for tourists, who are looking for northernthemed fabric —bears, moose, and northern lights.

“Quilters are huge stash-builders,” Headley observes, and they want materials they can use to create memories of their journey.

She sells kits — packages that contain a pattern, fabric and instructions, well-compressed for cruise-

ship travellers.

Every two years, the Quilter’s Travel Companion seeks out and lists quilt shops all over North America. Tourists find Bear’s Paw quilts with this book in their hands. Also, the Milepost lists “Knitting, Quilt and Bead Shops”; quilters form a niche market in the Yukon’s tourist trade.

But don’t ask a quilter to hem your pants.

“We don’t sew. We’re not garment makers,” explains Headley.

It’s kind of like asking Michelangelo to paint the outhouse.

What do they do then?

There are two main branches of this art form: traditional quilting and art quilting. That is not to say that one is art and not the other. It’s more like the difference between a classical and jazz musician. One works with traditional patterns, choosing her own colours and fabrics, not unlike the way a classical violinist might interpret a piece by Bach.

Art quilters experiment with various techniques, including appliqué, painting, and printing onto fabric, often creating landscape or other representational imagery.

They make up no more than ten per cent of quilters.

But both agree on the definition of a quilt: consisting of three layers — a pieced top, batting, and then the backing. These layers are sewn together. That is the part called “quilting”.

Headley explains that while most quilters have quilted by hand over an old-fashioned quilt frame once in their lives, once is usually enough; it takes a lot of time.

Headley uses a household sewing machine for her quilting, skilfully bunching the material so she can draw leaves and flowers over the whole surface — she likes drawing leaves — or using more abstract shapes to sew the layers together. The designs come out of her head.

Each quilter is restricted to what she can draw with her machine. Headley admires the work done by her employee Joanne Love, on a domestic machine with a slightly longer “throat”.

Quilting machines work differently than domestic sewing machines. The quilt is stretched out, and the machine moves over its surface. Often bed quilts are

too big for ordinary machines to undertake.

And then, there are digital versions of these types of machines that quilt perfectly, although the result is no longer hand-quilted.

Five people in Whitehorse run quilting businesses, and a quilting machine costs about $40,000, indicating the popularity of this scene.

Before the quilting, there’s the piecing. In any workshop, participants choose their fabrics.

“You’ve got to love the colours you pick,” Headley insists.

That love motivates the work of finishing the piece.

Eight times a year, Headley teaches a Quilt Start course, for beginners. Students complete a table runner, start to finish, in a traditional “rail fence” pattern.

They aren’t allowed to go home until it’s all quilted and the final edging is partly sewn on.

Each student leaves the class a quilter, ready to take any other quilting class.

Headley believes in finishing projects.

“If you’ve made a mistake, you move through it. It’s better to finish it and not be perfect so you

can move on to the next quilt. We want the whole thing to be joyous and lively and fun.”

Bear’s Paw also organizes five four-day quilting retreats a year. I spoke to Headley just before their twelfth birthday retreat in Haines Junction. More than 30 women will bring their own projects to work on. Headley is available to help, and in between, she too, works on her own quilt. They stitch from morning to night.

Headley thinks people love quilting because it’s a way to be artistic within a structure. Within traditional quilting there are rules, and once they’ve learned these rules they can bend or break them if they wish, and still enjoy the success of making something beautiful, that might also happen to be useful.

The Dedicated Volunteers of the Yukon Quest

J

udy Beaumont talks about the early days volunteering in the Yukon Quest office. The cramped space was shared with the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous in the (former) Regina hotel.

“The office was in behind the bar, this little crappy office in the back,” she says. “We had to go through the kitchen and a plumbing room to get to it.”

Beaumont has volunteered for the Quest since 1992. She started taking billets at the suggestion of her musher neighbour, and has been doing so ever since.

Now a board member, Beaumont ran the Braeburn checkpoint for ten years. One year a huge field of mushers, 43 in total, landed at Braeburn at the same time.

There was limited space for teams, so precision and planning was key to a restful stay.

“I was so proud of the volunteers that night. It was amazing, once all the teams were there and resting, it was completely quiet.

You only noticed the headlamps of vets and mushers quietly walking around the teams.”

Beaumont also raves about the Canadian Rangers; they pack and mark the trail on the Canadian side. It’s a massive job, and they deal with extremely cold temperatures, and have to create trails in mountains of jumble ice on the Yukon River.

Gaby Sgaga has managed the Dawson City checkpoint since 2006; she’s been involved with the race since 1999. The Dawson checkpoint has the longest layover along the trail. But this year, twelve hours have been shaved off the layover time.

Sgaga doesn’t know how the layover change will affect her and the 30-plus volunteers, but she is ready for anything because the first year she managed the checkpoint the race ended in Dawson instead of Whitehorse due to lack of snow; she learned about the change with little time to prepare.

“That was exciting,” she says.

“Most volunteers had already left so we found some people hanging around town and some locals to

help out. We quickly got together everything needed to put the finish on the river.”

A recurring theme among the volunteers is that they are a big, (mostly) happy family. Lifelong friendships have been forges along the quest route.

“Like any family, there are always hiccups, but we still look forward to seeing each other year after year,” says Bev Regier.

Regier moved to the Yukon from Victoria twelve years ago and wanted to meet some people.

So she wandered into the Quest offices.

She had never heard of the Yukon Quest.

Now she’s in the thick of things.

She is the jack-of-all-trades in the Quest volunteer world. She answers phones, works in the office, arranges billets, does fundraising and arranges silent auctions.

Do she ever get a break?

“Nope. It’s year round work, there are board meetings every month throughout the summer, we have joint planning sessions and I call around local businesses to arrange for sponsorship.”

In 2013, Regier was awarded a Tourism Industry Association of Yukon Volunteer of the Year award.

Those days in the cramped office at the Regina hotel are long gone, but the passion remains.

“The Yukon Quest is a race run on volunteers, it takes a lot of us to make it happen.”

Stacie Zaychuk lives with her own 12 pack of very recreational sled dogs outside of Whitehorse. She was sucked into the world of mushing in 1999 and soon realized that there is no escape.

Thursday, February 12th The day kicks off with the festival’s final installment of the Fire Hall Film Talks, a series of free lunchtime discussions between filmmakers and artists about behind-the-scene development of projects. Thursday’s talk is on the changing face of music videos and narrative film.

Panelists are singer-songwriter John Southworth; Violent director and member of We Are the City, Andrew Huculiak; Andrew Stratis, of Headless Owl Records, and Tu Dors Nicole director Stéphane Lafleur.

Friday, February 13th Friday’s programming is rooted strongly in the multi-disciplinary space, exemplified by Shary Boyle and Christine Fellows’ Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home, at 7:30 p.m. Part ritual and part myth, Boyle and Fellows use sound, lyric, image, and light to tell stories that reconnect us with a sense of shared history and common humanity.

“This work premiered at the Northern Arts Centre in Yellowknife and was toured throughout the NWT in October,” says Connors.

Saturday, February 14th Saturday’s programming kicks off with a labour of love five years in the making, by Yukoner Celia McBride — Last Stop for Miles, at 10:30 a.m. The film was made

with a local cast and crew, and was shot on location in Whitehorse.

Connors laughs: “I keep describing the film as being made on a ‘micro-budget’ and Celia continues to correct my terminology to ‘no budget’.”

The evening will showcase 20,000 Days on Earth, at 9 p.m.

This film revolves around 24 fictitious hours in the life of Australian musician, author and screenwriter Nick Cave.

“Nick Cave is like Bob Dylan or Neil Young to me,” says Connors.

“He’s this legendary storyteller and musician, and this film captures his story perfectly.”

Sunday, February 15th The final day of the festival kicks off with a free screening of, Howl’s Moving Castle, a classic from legendary animation artist Hayao Miyazaki at 10 a.m.

“Studio Ghibli’s (Miyazaki’s studio) work is magical but they are very picky about the standard at

which their work is screened,” explains Connors. “We only have the right equipment in Whitehorse during the festival so it’s a priority for me to include their work in this window where we can meet the tech requirements.”

Later that day festival-goers will be treated to Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll at 12:30 p.m., which will allow audiences to experience the 20th Century history of the Cambodian people, culminating in the Khmer Rouge’s genocide, through music and culture.

“The film is able to look at Cambodia’s tragic past while also capturing the power of art to give people a sense of pride and identity,” says Connors.

Sunday also features DamNation at 5:15 pm., an eye-opening film about dam removal across the United States.

“It’s a timely piece, with Yukoners looking at further hydro developments to meet our energy needs, so we’ve invited Yukon Energy and Yukon Conservation Society to join us for a discussion after the screening,” says Connors.

The festival finishes with the new art house film from renowned English director Mike Leigh, Mr. Turner at 7:30 p.m., about the eccentric and talented British painter J.M.W. Turner. The film is up for four Academy Awards has already garnered Timothy Spall the award for Best Actor at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

magine being able to pick out a child from an assortment of infants and toddlers, as easily as choosing a puppy from a litter or candy from a dish. You might even take two.

It sounds like the plot of a fanciful children’s book, but that’s what people could do at certain convents in Ireland only a few decades ago. Now the practice is often referred to as forcible adoption.

When Philomena Lee met journalist Martin Sixsmith, she’d spent decades agonizing over a secret she’d kept for 50 years. In 1955 she’d lost her three-year-old son, Anthony Lee, when an American couple took him from the Catholic convent where he and his mother were staying.

Unwed and disgraced, Philomena gave birth there and was working off her debt to the facility, as required in these “Magdalene laundries”.

Sixsmith’s book about Philomena’s search, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, was adapted for the screen by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope and directed by Stephen Frears.

Released in 2013, it’s available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library.

Journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) has been fired from his job as a political advisor when Philomena’s daughter approaches him about investigating the whereabouts of Anthony. Sixsmith isn’t interested at first, but without much else on his plate, he finally agrees to meet Philomena (Judi Dench).

The nuns of the convent are impervious to Philomena’s questions, but Martin’s sleuthing uncovers information that points to the United States. In short order, they discover that Anthony Lee became Michael Hess, a high profile political consultant, who died several years earlier. Martin’s story and Philomena’s quest seem destined for an abrupt end, but Philomena decides to continue the journey, looking for friends and family who can tell her about Michael. There is still a surprise in store for her — Michael left a message for his mother.

While the subject matter is infuriating, Philomena’s buoyancy makes her good company — it’s Martin, not Philomena, who refers to the nuns as evil.

Her interactions with Martin are comic as well as wise, as he eventually comes to respect that the unworldly Philomena has re-

serves of strength that he can’t match — even if her taste in the bodice-ripping genre of literature confounds him. Philomena Lee is served well by Judi Dench’s warm portrayal.

Philomena is a surprisingly light film, considering the subject matter — mostly due to Philomena’s determination to refrain from bitterness and the rapport between Philomena and Martin.

But while the film celebrates resiliency, it doesn’t deny the grief that the convent’s actions caused, either. A haunting melancholy is seen in the figure of Michael (Sean Mahon), who is glimpsed in grainy home movies and still photographs. The real Michael Hess is seen in some of the footage.

ast November, Whitehorse entrepreneur Stephen Kwok Wai-Kan was in Vancouver in his part-time role as liaison officer between the Yukon and Chinese governments.

When Her Excellency Lui Fei, China’s consul general in that city, asked if he’d be interested in having some Chinese performers come to Whitehorse to help celebrate the Chinese New Year, Kwok didn’t hesitate.

“She said, ‘What’s your idea for a show?’ and I said, ‘First thing I need is martial arts. Everybody loves martial arts,” he reports.

As luck would have it, one of the world’s top martial arts troupes was already scheduled to be in Vancouver to help usher in the Year of the Sheep in the Chinese lunar calendar, which starts on February 19. Fitting in a couple of Yukon shows would not be a problem.

“It is just a celebration, and an opportunity to give the Yukon an open eye to this kind of big event,” Kwok says.

“Even myself, I have never seen a real martial arts performance in my life, so I’m not going to pass up this opportunity when I have Chinese government support, plus Yukon government support.”

The 19-member group known as Shaolin Wushu Masters will appear at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on February 15 and 16, starting at 7:00 p.m., presented by the Yukon-China Community Association.

The name Shaolin Wushu, also known as Shaolin kung fu (or Shaolin quan), refers to the style of martial arts first adopted more

than 1,500 years ago by Zen Buddhist monks at the temple of Shaolin at Songshan Mountain in the central Chinese province of Henan.

Born from necessity, as a way for the monks to protect their monastery and its extensive grounds from marauders, it has since gone on to become the dominant school of kung fu, with an extensive repertoire of both barehanded and weapon styles of engagement.

According to some sources, an old Chinese saying has it that “All martial arts under heaven arose out of Shaolin.”

Monastic life at Shaolin still involves a rigorous regime combining several hours a day of martial arts practice (“quan”) with regular periods of religious study (“chan”), as well as the routine domestic and administrative chores of communal life.

According to Kwok, the Shaolin Wushu Masters coming here next week performed before world leaders at Beijing’s “bird’s nest” stadium during last year’s APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit last November.

“The school has performed in over 80 countries all over the world, and the famous actor Jet Li is from the same school, so they are very high profile.”

In Whitehorse, they will perform on a 40-foot-square area that will use up nearly half of the cultural centre’s floor space.

The performance will include a variety of techniques, including pictographic animal boxing, knife and whip group boxing, variations of hard qigong (involving pikes

and steel nails), and use of the 18 weapons developed by Shaolin monks over the years.

Kwok admits he has no direct experience with traditional martial arts.

“None. I love Chinese food.

Does that count?” he jokes. “But I don’t use chopsticks, I use a fork and knife.”

Still, the owner of 38 Famous Video and the nearby Riverdale Neighbourhood Pub recently uncovered a possible tie-in between the kung fu presentation and one of his other businesses, the city’s only bowling alley, which is scheduled to close in April.

Referring to Stephen Chow’s over-top comedy, Shaolin Soccer, filmed in Hong Kong in 2001, Kwok says some customers suggested a way of raising money to avoid the bowling alley’s closure.

“When they found out I was bringing these guys in, they said, ‘Shoot a movie called Shaolin Bowling,’” he laughs.

“If the ski hill needs money, or the curling club needs money, maybe we could all put on a sequel.”

a handler’s tale like a good handler. I did it the way I had seen handlers do it in the past. Basically, I strung up a tarp and laid out straw. Gina pulled into Dawson and the hours of slugging coffee and talking nonstop at checkpoints had caught up with her. She was a little delusional.

“Where are my cigarettes?”

I was confused so I just stared at her. She couldn’t possibly be yelling at me.

She was convinced that somewhere in the 250 road-less miles between Eagle and Dawson, I had snuck up on her and taken her ciggies.

This continued until we found her smokes buried at the bottom of her sled bag. She didn’t even light one up, which I was somehow disappointed by, after all the yelling.

In case you haven’t met Gina, she is tiny, but she is mighty. She’s a spitfire of an Alaskan dog musher who used to drive heavy equipment for DOT when she wasn’t running dogs. I liked her instantly.

Meanwhile, in Dawson, extreme fatigue got the better of her and she soon passed out. I got to work, feeding and walking the dogs as much as they needed. I had never used a cooker before. And Gina, in her haste to make it to the start chute, didn’t really cut up the blocks of chicken parts that she would use to feed her team. So I wound up boiling huge chunks of chicken in her cooker pot, which is generally, strictly reserved for water.

Then the boiling water is usually poured over small meat chunks and kibble in a cooler and dished out to hungry huskies accordingly.

I messed it up royally until another handler came to my rescue.

Also, in Dawson, I overslept one morning and in my rush to get to the dog yard to give the dogs another meal, I backed hard into another dog truck. I ripped the door off one of the dog boxes, but managed to jury-rig it back on with the help of yet another handler. Gina didn’t care about the damage to her truck, but I’m pretty sure she was still sleeping deeply when I told her.

Fast-forward again to the end of the race and the makeshift finish line in Dawson. Gina was last that year, but only 11 mushers finished. It was hard year, maybe one of the hardest. But she did it, and boy, was she happy.

I met her at the finish line with a hug, a coffee and, of course, some cigarettes.

hen I showcased my subpar dog handling skills in a race for the first time, it was the 2006 Yukon Quest. But I was no stranger to the Quest, because I had covered it five times before that as a reporter for the Yukon News.

I figured I knew a thing or two (or three, or four) about grumpy mushers. In 2004 and 2005 I went to Alaska as a summer handler for a couple of Iditarod and Quest veterans, before jetting off to frigid northern Finland for six months to strap tourists on dog sleds and whisk them into the wilds for days at a time.

After all that, handling for rookie quester Regina Wycoff, or Gina, who lived and trained in Healy, Alaska, should have been a breeze.

Turns out, handling is a hoot, yes, but only after you forget about the exhaustion and the yelling, the driving and the panic.

It was a helluva year, 2006.

It was the year the storm on Eagle Summit prompted the U.S. military to send in giant helicopters to rescue several mushers and dog teams; it was the year the reroute of the trail sent mushers from Dawson, to Pelly, and back to the capital of the Klondike; and it was the year I learned to bury my ego. (Who are we kidding? My ego is alive and well. But being a handler is a lesson in humility to say the least.)

I thought for sure Gina was stuck up Eagle Summit in the storm. I was waiting in central, listening to updates and trying not to worry. I even laid down and tried to get some sleep. But then something amazing happened. Gina and her team came skidding into the checkpoint. Gina was smiling.

She loved it. She loved the storm, she loved helping other mushers, she loved being scared.

She loved everything about it. My job as a handler then, I decided, was to praise her and let her recount the tale a couple times in the checkpoint after she had taken care of her dogs.

A couple times.

I practically had to pry the coffee out of her hand and yell in her face: “Go to bed. You have to sleep now. No more coffee. No more talkie.”

I’m surprised she didn’t punch me.

Fast-forward to Dawson and the halfway point. I set up her camp

East Coasters Come North Jon Mckiel and Julie Doiron play ALFF

with a band, his Yukon debut will be a solo affair.

“I’m not going to be bringing those guys,” he says. “It’s a very long journey. It’s a plane-type journey. I’m just going to play alone. Which is going to be terrifying. Every time I do it I say I’m never going to do that again.

“Maybe I can get a band together in Whitehorse.”

But his more recent pieces might suit the intimacy of isolation in the North — his latest album was recorded on an eight track in a small wood-heated cabin-like studio.

“It’s exciting to take the means of my own production back. It’s more hands-on, it’s not the kind of thing you can rush.

“You give more of yourself.”

Julie Doiron will also be performing solo — although she won’t be travelling that way. Doiron is heading to the Yukon with her eighteen-month-old daughter Elsie, who already has her own passport and has joined her mom on multiple tour stops.

Our conversation also begins with the weather.

Also hailing from New Brunswick, Doiron says the storm piled

hen I reach Jon Mckiel he’s in the middle of a New Brunswick snowstorm. I’m in the Yukon, where the temperature has dipped below -30°C. We talk about what to expect when he arrives in Whitehorse to perform at the Available Light Film Festival on February 13. He’s never been here, and I’ve never been there, so we’re unsure how to compare, but it sounds like the temperature will be similar.

While our groceries might be more expensive, he’s used to shopping in a town with only two stores that often run out of things.

“I don’t know what else to expect,” he says. “I hope to see the northern lights.”

But his impression of the northern arts scene does precede his visit. He’s aware that this place a magnet for artists; his latest selftitled album has even been produced by Yukon’s own Headless Owl Records.

He’ll be bringing his unique sound (which is said to channel Daniel Johnston) to a late-night cabaret this Friday alongside east coast indie legend Julie Doiron.

about six feet of snow in front of her back door.

“But it was so windy,” she says.

“Our front door is totally clear.”

Doiron has been in the Yukon before; she played the Dawson City Music Festival in 2008. She left wanting to come back — looking up flights.

And it’s fitting she’ll be returning with a child in tow. After twenty years, Doiron is taking a break from music, sort of. She’s been focusing her energy on being a mom, and she’s totally enjoying it.

“I think I just really like being a homemaker,” she says, as she is taking a short break from hanging out with Elsie to speak with me.

“That’s kind of where I think I thrive. That being said I have this new song I’ve been waking up with in my head every morning...”

Doiron has been a mother for

just about as long as she’s been a musician. Her oldest is twenty, and he came into her life around the time she began her solo career. This isn’t her first break from music — after her daughter Rosie was born she took a year off.

“It’s kind of the most amazing year I have spent,” she says.

“Walking kids to the bus. Meeting them after school. I felt like I was doing what I wanted to do.”

“But,” she says, “If I had quit music entirely…I don’t know if I would have been happy.”

Doiron has produced 10 studio albums and participated in countless collaborations; she’s a Juno winner and a Polaris shortlister.

“It was worrying me last fall... will I ever write a song again? Will I care? What do I have to say anymore?”

But though Elsie was her reason for a break, she’s also brought

This will be Jon McKiel’s first trip to the Yukon Doiron back.

“I honestly think it’s because I’m seeing something through a toddler’s eyes again,” says Doiron.

“She plays all the instruments and thinks they are the most amazing things in the world.

“It’s just really nice to just do it for fun.”

T

he best album I heard last summer, and probably all year, came out of Dawson

City.

Hope, the debut album by The Naysayers, totally rocks. Led by singer-songwriter Drea Nasager, the band fuels its folk rock songs with a heavy punk edge.

Nasager’s lyrics are sung, snarled, and spat; they mix with Jonathan Howe’s lead guitar and the driving rhythm section of Dan DeGroot on bass and Matt Sarty on drums, for a sound somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Sleater-Kinney.

“It totally has an aggressive rock n’ roll feel because that’s how we perform,” says Nasager.

“That’s our style for sure. At the CD release, a lot of people said The Pretenders, and they referenced a lot of Patti Smith and that kind of vibe, and I’m super OK with it.”

‘Aggressive’ is an apt description. A Naysayers gig leaves the performers and audience drenched in sweat, as their packed CD release at the Westminster Hotel and Nasager’s post-show selfies from the band’s recent tour prove.

Originally from Peterborough,

Ontario, Nasager moved to Dawson City with the intention of making it big.

“I’ve been coming here personal since 2003, playing music, and I moved here permanently in 2011.

I moved here to be a big fish in a small pond and to take the opportunity of being a national musician from small town.”

The band formed after Nasager was performing solo at Bombay Peggy’s.

“Matt and Jonathan approached me to be in a band,” she recalls. “And we had heard that Dan was a bass player and just kind of roped him in. After a practice we just realized that that was a perfect fit for us.”

Drummer Sarty agrees.

“We started this band in the deep dark winter months. I think that that bonded us for a bit, like we thought, let’s be a band for a while. The winter months definitely bond the friendships, and it bonds the band.”

Nasager’s lyrics are raw and personal, and steeped in uncensored emotion. She says of the album: “It’s singer-songwriter so it’s very autobiographical. Since moving to Dawson I went from a trailer

to a divorce to owning my own home. I’ve been a single mother for about four years now, so the album been a long time coming.

It’s a genuine expression, and it’s so honest and I think the crowd and the fans and the people who like the music, they don’t feel like we’re bullshitting them at all.”

The honesty is felt on ‘Family Farm’, a song about the plight of a small farmer: “Today they sold the family farm/Cut at the elbow to save the arm”.

On ‘Hope Pt. 2’, she responds to a breakup first with, “I ain’t going to sing about hope”, and finally, with no suitable words, just screaming.

“That’s how I feel, that’s how I write,” Nasager says. “And that’s why people tell me, ‘I don’t buy CDs but I bought this, because I just went through this thing and that’s exactly how I felt’. And that’s what I want.”
