Q
uilters Without Borders has been going strong for 14 years, based in Bear’s Paw Quilts on Second Avenue. I had the pleasure of chatting with four members of Quilters Without Borders one Thursday afternoon to get some insight into the organization and the women who make it happen. Joining me were May Gudmundson, Lee Pugh, Sharon Westberg and Edith Healy. “It came about from a flood at the shop,” said Gudmundson. “Ruth Headley, the shop owner, found herself with a lot of flooddamaged fabric, unfit to sell, but still useful. Judy Gibbons and Headley decided it should go to charity and they came up with the idea of Quilters Without Borders. The name is inspired by Doctors Without Borders and Engineers Without Borders. They gathered a group of women together to turn the fabric into quilts to give to people in need.” Fourteen years later the group is still at it, and with some of the same members.
It was clear from talking to the ladies and how they showed me their work that they love quilting. When I asked if they had a sewing machine at home, as well as at Bear’s Paw, they all laughed and corrected me: Did you say how many? The manner in which it is determined who gets the quilts varies depending upon the circumstances. In some cases, the group contacts someone directly, such as when there has been a house fire or other disaster, or through someone who knows someone, and in other cases, organizations have contacted the ‘Quilters’. “Many of the quilts go to patients in the chemotherapy room – up to forty quilts in a year - or to people in extended care.” Pugh said. “The way it works in the chemo room is patients get a quilt for themselves when they first come in for treatment and then they get to take it home with them when they are finished with treatment. We also send quilts to the
Teen Parent Centre every year for the graduating class,” Westberg added, “and we also sent twelve down to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Vancouver for children and young adults.” “One of the wings of that facility is named for Bryce Davidson, who was a local boy who passed away from cancer. So, it was really appropriate that the quilts went there. In accordance with the wishes of another young man who had received a quilt from Quilters Without Borders, we donated the Canuck Place quilts in his memory.” Gudmundson said. “All organizations are quilt worthy,” Pugh explained. “But if Joe Blow off the street just came in and said my granny needs a quilt, we would say, no, you can buy one for your granny, unless there is a special circumstance.” “The quilts are more for people going through difficult times. That is our main criteria” Westberg clarified. cont’d on page 3 ...

Quilters Without Borders ... cont’d
On the Cover Quilters Without Borders gives the opportunity for the quilters to enjoy the camaraderie of working on the quilts together, regular social connections and knowing that they are helping people. As Gudmundson said: “It makes me feel good that I have a purpose and the skills to create something beautiful. It’s like giving a hug to somebody” Quilters Without Borders appreciates donations, either in the form of quality cotton fabrics or cash to be used to purchase material for the quilts which are
given away. Also, Quilters Without Borders occasionally sells quilts to be able to pay for the materials for the quilts which they give away. Quilters Without Borders also appreciates Headley making the space available at Bear’s Paw Quilts for them to meet, store their materials and create.

In addition to the warm feeling of giving to those in need, there are other benefits to the members. “We look forward to Thursdays because we do a lot of chatting in addition to the quilting. We have the advantage of seeing and trying new patterns. One of the other things I like about this group is we are not perfectionists. We do our best work, but we don’t try to be fancy” Westberg said. “We don’t do competitiongrade. We try to use fairly simple patterns, which are quick to put
together, especially if there is a sudden demand for them.” Pugh offered and Gudmundson added, “We are all very supportive of each other.” “And we always stop for lunch. We never forget lunch!” Healey laughed. “We usually use larger blocks because we don’t know where the quilts are going and assuming some of them will be in the laundry quite often, we want them to be durable. We use 100% cotton, quilt quality with simple patterns.” Pugh noted.

Community CONNECTION
Whitehorse Community Choir Goes Virtual

n these uncertain and unusual times, the “new normal” doesn’t always look like the old one! The Whitehorse Community Choir has come up with a way to permit members to sing while still respecting their health and safety – a virtual choir. The choir will be holding virtual practices on Zoom starting on Monday, September 14th. On Monday nights, altos and tenors will rehearse together from their own homes from 7 to 8 pm, while sopranos and basses will rehearse from 8:15 to 9:15 pm. The choir term will run until December 5th. Between rehearsals, members will be expected to learn their parts. YouTube links for the pieces, sheet music, and recordings of song parts will be provided to assist choristers to learn the pieces. The plan is to learn a minimum of
three Christmas songs. Each singer will need a computer/laptop/tablet/cell phone and will need to download the free Zoom app. They will also need to be able to record themselves singing using a cell phone or other device. The choir will send out clear instructions on how to do this. It doesn’t require any fancy equipment – some members have already had experience recording their voices and will be able to help out others. Singers will start to record their first song by mid-October, with each member recording on their own computer/laptop/tablet/cell phone and submitting their sound and video recordings to the artistic director, Barbara Chamberlin. Only she will be able to hear each individual singer; the final result will be a blend of all the participants’ voices. There may be a pos-
sibility of sections recording at the Yukon Arts Centre if the Yukon plan for lifting COVID restrictions permits. “Hearing your own voice singing without others or any accompaniment can be intimidating at first, but we expect that the magic of sound editing will make you sound like the very best version of yourself,” she commented. Rehearsals will continue throughout October and November as needed, or smaller group coaching sessions will be scheduled to work on areas for improvement. Registration will be online only; registration forms with further details can be found on the choir’s website at www.whitehorsechoir. org. Catherine Simpson is an organizer for the Whitehorse Community Choir.

An ABC Aviation Adventure
Alis the Aviator

here are all sorts of ABC books out there, but they are seldom as focussed on a particular subject as this one, which manages to do the job of introducing all the letters while remaining firmly in the air. The Alis of the title is named for Dr. Alis Kennedy, who was one of the first indigenous women to get her commercial pilot’s licence in Canada. There’s a full page biography and a second page of photographs about Kennedy following the last alphabet page. Now retired from flying and the military, she does a lot of community volunteer work (11 different groups) and most recently, in 2017, was the flagbearer for that year’s Invictus Games. It’s quite neat to be reviewing this book the same week that the media has reported that Champagne and Aishihik citizen Shadunjen van Kampen has obtained her pilot’s licence, and is now believed
to be the first Yukon First Nations woman to be commercially licensed. Metcalfe-Chanail has taken the route of naming 26 different types of flying machines - mostly aircraft, but one hot air balloon and a zeppelin. The text is in simple rhymed couplets, and begins this way. “A is for Arrow, the one that got away. “B is for Beaver, great for work and play.” Of particular interest to us is the page for the Canadian Pacific Dakota aircraft, which is shown as a weather vane outside the Yukon Transportation Museum. There is also a spread on the Queen of the Yukon, sister ship to Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, a page illustrated with a facsimile of the front page of the Whitehorse Star from May 11, 1928. The individual pages don’t give a lot of information about the aircraft, but the author and artist have taken care of that with an illustrated glossary in which each aircraft gets a full paragraph of explanation. The artwork in this book is bright and cheerful and surprisingly three dimensional, with each page rendered in cut paper by Patel, who is based in Toronto. Alis is the continuing figure on each page, and is somehow drawing attention to the aircraft that is the main feature. It’s been 10 years since Danielle Metcalfe-Chanail spent three months living and working at the Berton House Writers Residency in Dawson. If you Google her name and the program you can see a

A Look Back at Arts in the Park 2020 Because of gathering restrictions and other factors, this year’s edition of Arts in the Park was adapted into a live radio show. Here’s how it went.
Steve Slade recording for Arts in the Park
The Cryptozoologists
Garbage Man
By Manus Hopkins
I
didn’t expect Arts in the Park to happen at all this year. Everything was getting cancelled, from big festivals like Atlin Arts and Music Festival and Dawson City Music Festival, to smaller bar shows with local acts. It just seemed like live music wasn’t going to be something that was happening at all, and events being postponed was more common than them being adapted to somehow fit within COVID-related guidelines. Eventually, there was a social media announcement about Arts in the Park taking place as a live radio broadcast show on CJUC 92.5 FM and a few job listings along with it. I sent in an application that day and within a few weeks I had hit the ground running
as the show’s associate producer. Things went generally pretty smoothly over our four-week run. Of course, live music is the preferred way to present a series like Arts in the Park, but working a radio show wasn’t so bad.
Week One
Drea Naysayer kicked off our series as a solo act on July 6. We’d spent a long time getting everything ready, but when the first day came, stress levels were high and there were a lot of nerves. After all, this was live radio. There would be no fixing disasters after the fact, so we had to just do our best to avoid them altogether. Drea’s show came and went and the only thing that went wrong was a ticking clock that one of
our microphones picked up. We removed the clock and decided if that was the worst thing to happen, that meant things were off to a good start. Our sound technician, Etienne Girard had a constantly full plate, with almost every act requiring a different setup, and only an hour before each performance to get everything figured out. As there was no real visual component to the show, our producer, Sarah Ott, took photos of each performer to use for social media promotion, and we kept the recordings of each show to post online for people who may have missed them as well. Over the rest of week one, we had hip-hop duo Local Boy, Arts in the Park cofounder Steve Slade, a Wednesday
evening show with Cryptozoologists, a Thursday broadcast from Dawson City with Andrew Laviolette and Kristen Poenn, and Stockstill and Rose closing the week on the Friday afternoon.
Week two
We had gotten the hang of things a bit more after the first week, which felt like a bit of a trial period. Erica Mah and Darcy McCord started off the week, with Selina Heyligers-Hare joining us for our Tuesday show. We brought some speakers from Music Yukon that week to put outside while the show was going on, so people in Shipyards Park could hear. Unfortunately, we couldn’t always have them out, because it Was raining more often than not, but it
was still nice for the shows where we could make that work. Each Wednesday morning before the noon-hour show, which was usually a kids or family-friendly show, we had the Yukon Literacy Coalition come in and read some children’s books. The changeover could be a challenge sometimes. The book readings were supposed to lead right into the performances, and with everyone having to be two metres apart in the small CJUC cabin, and all equipment having to be disinfected after each use, this would have been a pretty likely time for any blunders. But, we managed to make it work and it got a little easier every week. Michael Brooks joined us that cont’d on page 7 ...

A look back at Arts in the Park 2020 ... cont’d Elijah Bekk
Chuck Charlebois, then Ellorie McKnight and Ryan McNally. Wednesday was another busy day, with Claire Ness handling the noon hour show while Nakai Theatre listened from the park where they were hosting a puppetmaking session, and the evening show featured Elijah Bekk, who had travelled from Faro to join us, and Aiden Tentrees playing standup bass for him. The next day, Evrytt Willow’s showcase was broadcasted from Dawson, while we were hard at work all day and evening pre-recording the grand finale show for Friday. It wasn’t possible to have five different acts come through and perform live within the hour-long slot, so we had Sour Do Re Mi bookend the finale with a busking-style performance, and the rest of the performers, Fawn Fritzen and David Restivo, Calla Kinglit, BJ Maclean and Bob Hamiton and Paris Pick and Aiden Tentrees, pre-record their 15-minute sets and splice them together into one show. Yukon Artists @Work, who had been running a viewing series called Artists in the Window, came out and set up their projects at Shipyards Park, while Nakai Theatre demoed their puppets and we played the finale show over the speakers for the finale. Members of the public were able to walk through, looking at the art and puppets, while listening to the show. And thankfully, it was actually nice out that day. Things may have been a lot different, but Arts in the Park still happened at least, and it was actually pretty cool to present it in this new format.

Wednesday for a stripped-down version if his Bingo Bongo Boogie Band children’s music act, featuring just Roxx Hunter on guitar. Later that evening, we had one of the most complicated setups of the entire series, belonging to Groan Boy, consisting of Dawson Beaulieu with an elaborate guitar setup and Patrick Hamilton, with a full drum kit. The Dawson show that Thursday featured Susu Robin, and we had Graeme and Jody Peters of Speed Control end the week on a high note.
Week three
At the beginning of our third week, it didn’t at all feel like we were already halfway through our season. The first two weeks had zipped by, and time didn’t start slowing the further into the series we got. The first act of week three was Ragtime Annie and Yukon Sal, usually known as mother and daughter Annie Avery and Sarah Hamilton. Since Sarah’s brother Patrick had been in the week before, and their dad Bob Hamilton was part of the final show in week four, that made the Hamilton-Avery crew the only entire family to take part in Arts in the Park this year. The week continued on with Alex and Dan on Tuesday, who are best known as members of the Midnight Sons and the Shaggy Manes. The Wednesday afternoon show was an interesting one. The
forecast didn’t call for much rain, and it seemed pretty dry out despite some storm clouds in the distance. We decided to take our chances and put the speakers out with garbage bags over them for singer-songwriter Toots’ show. About halfway through the performance, the rain started coming down heavily, forcing Etienne and I to run out and bring the speakers in, drenching ourselves in the process. Sorry about that, Toots. We didn’t take our chances with the speakers after that, and only put them out when it was sunny and dry. Later that evening, we had Aiden Tentrees’ new act Garbageman deliver a dose of strange spacey rock, and luckily we didn’t get rained on then. Word began to spread and we started to get people coming down to the park just to listen, but on the nice days the park was often full of unsuspecting people who just happened to be there anyway. That week’s Dawson performance was by Sophie Noel, and French pop covers duo Edith Cocotte wrapped up the week.

Powering the North
Northern Energy Innovation awarded for renewable energy project in Arviat by Heather LeDuc
W
hen it comes to energy, northern communities require sustainable, reliable solutions. There are many challenges to planning a power project in the North, including severe weather and electric power networks that span great distances. Renewable energy technologies can work, but they need to be carefully planned and designed so they meet the power needs of remote communities. Northern Energy Innovation (NEI), a program at Yukon University Research Centre, works to help communities reduce their reliance on diesel, and to make the integration of renewable energy sources a success. The program’s work has contributed to projects in communities across the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. NEI is a Yukon University research program that partners with Arctic College in Nunavut and Aurora College in the Northwest Territories. Earlier this year, NEI was recognized for its exceptional work in the Hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut. It placed third in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engin-

whatsupyukon.com eering Capstone competition for its work in completing a power grid assessment for Arviat and its partner NRStor, a company that develops energy storage solutions. The assessment is an important step when planning a renewable energy project in the North. “NEI creates models of the electric power system of communities based on information provided by our utility partners and the project proponents, and from information collected in the field,” said Jason Zrum, NEI research analyst. “We then perform analytical and simulation studies of the system to assess the potential impact of a renewable energy project, with the goal of ensuring that projects don’t negatively affect the reliability of the system. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is for a renewable project to cause a number of blackouts or other issues.” The project in Arviat will integrate wind, solar and a battery system into the local power system as an independent power producer. Once the project is complete, there will be 50 per cent renewable energy penetration, reducing the hamlet’s reliance on diesel. NEI partners with the Northern Energy Consortium, which consists of ATCO Electric Yukon, Northwest Territories Power Corporation, Qulliq Energy Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation. “NEI’s research areas are determined by the Northern Energy Consortium to address the needs of the utilities and then we propose projects within these research areas,” Zrum said. “One of these areas is the integration of renewable energy in remote communities.” Michael Ross is the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Industrial Re-
search Chair in Northern Energy Innovation. Ross leads NEI’s research projects, which have included nine communities in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. “Our team is committed to working with northern communities and their utility companies to provide the information needed to incorporate sustainable energy
The NEI has completed assessments for several other communities including Old Crow and Beaver Creek in the Yukon, and Cape Dorset in Nunavut. Zrum also highlighted other projects NEI has on the go. “We’re currently working on an impact study in Łutsël Ké, Northwest Territories, in partnership with BCIT,” he said. “We also

have a range of projects ongoing in other research areas, including a project assessing the efficiency of a variable speed generator in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, and a project looking at electric thermal storage in Whitehorse, to
name a few.” The NEI is playing a huge role in making renewable energy solutions a reality in northern communities. The Capstone Award for the program’s work in Arviat is well-deserved recognition for research that may fly under the radar, at least for the average Yukoner. And while Zrum is pleased with the award, he also shares credit with the NEI’s community and industry partners. “It really takes the involvement of the communities, project proponents, and the utilities to make any renewable project be a success. Our work can help these projects to move forward by providing an unbiased assessment of the potential impact, but ultimately it is the community and proponents who make these projects happen. It has been great to receive an award for some of our work, but it wouldn’t have happened without the support of our industry partners and the drive of many communities to pursue renewable projects.” More about NEI’s projects can be found on the Yukon University website at YukonU.ca/Research/ Our-Research/Energy.
Heather LeDuc lives in Whitehorse with her partner and a menagerie of dogs, cats and bicycles.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy
Smashed cucumber salad with ginger F
resh, crisp cucumbers are perfect at any summer meal. They add texture and contrast when paired with grilled meats. This version can be served as a salad, or as a garnish, next to pretty much anything you’d throw on a grill. Letting the cucumbers drain is an important step, so it’s better to let this dish sit too long rather than not long enough. If you’ve got some fresh herbs kicking around, a few leaves of cilantro, chopped basil, or mint is a great addition. Serves 4. INGREDIENTS ❑ 2.2 lbs thin-skinned cucumbers (about 10 small Persian cucumbers, or 2 large English cucumbers) ❑ 1 tsp salt ❑ 2 tsp sugar ❑ 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
Sliced, seeded cucumbers
Grated garlic and ginger
❑ 1 garlic clove, grated ❑ 1 1/2 tsp rice vinegar ❑ 1 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil

❑ 1 tsp soy sauce

Mmmm… sweet blueberry goodness
I
don’t believe I’ve ever seen so many berry pickers as this year in the White Pass near Fraser, B.C., southern Yukon’s favourite place to find blueberries. The pandemic was driving us out into the stunning moonscape of small lakes, rock, balsam fir, lichen, alder and dwarf birch from Log Cabin to Summit Creek in search of an outing and of berries, whether we call them blueberries, huckleberries or bilberries (the vernacular is so confusing!). Some grow high (Vaccinium ovafolium) and some grow low (Vaccinium uliganosum, Vaccinium
Fall In Love With The Yukon . . .
caespitosum), most require twisting the body into pretzel shapes, balancing on tree roots and dancing amongst boulders in order to get to the plants. This was an activity I found absolutely crazy the first time I went, brought by new friends the year I arrived in Whitehorse. “Why would you even do this for a yogurt container of berries?” was my attitude then, perched with one foot on a rock and the other in a hard place. Now I can’t imagine not going on this annual pilgrimage, even if I already have berries in the freezer. It’s a seasonal touchstone, a way of connecting to the annual round of foraging, of re-grounding oneself in the landscape. I remember every spot and who I went with, what the weather was like, how much we harvested, what we ate
for our snack, which dogs were with us, whether we saw a bear. (For me, never, just lots of blue poop. The dogs’ poop is often blue the next day too.) When I put the bags of cleaned berries away in the freezer, I write the date and the place they were from. And so the memory is cooked right into the berries.

Blueberry Pilgrims ... cont’d Blueberry Compote Ingredients 3 cups wild blueberries ½ cup sugar 2 Tbsp lemon juice Method Combine 2 cups blueberries, sugar and lemon juice in a small pot. Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes, then add the remaining cup of blueberries and cook 5 minutes more. (There’s so much juice in the berries you don’t need to add water.) If the compote is too liquid for your liking, strain into a small bowl, reserve the fruit, return the liquid to the pot and simmer until reduced to a syrup. Mix in berries, cook for 1 minute more and remove from heat. Serve warm or at room temperature. Compote will keep in the fridge for 2 to 3 weeks. Makes about 2 cups.
Camembert Dutch Baby Ingredients ½ cup flour ½ cup milk
3 large eggs 1 tsp whisky, bourbon or vanilla 1 tsp salt 1 Tbsp sugar 5 oz Camembert or Brie, cut into 5 or 6 thin slices. (For more bite, use a stronger cheese like old Cheddar or Parmesan.) 2 Tbsp butter Method Whisk flour and milk together in a medium bowl. Your goal is to eliminate as many lumps from the batter as possible, so start here. Whisk in eggs, followed by vanilla, salt and sugar. Whisk until no lumps remain, and allow the batter to sit for 20 minutes so that the flour absorbs the liquid. (You can always make the batter in a food processor or blender to get really lump-free.) Put a cast iron skillet on the middle rack of the oven and heat the oven to 425F. When the oven beeps, remove the hot pan and add the butter, swirling so that it coats bottom and sides. Carefully pour the batter evenly into the pan, and lay the slices of cheese across the batter. (Remember the pan is really hot. Put an oven mitt across the
handle to remind yourself.) Return the pan to the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the pancake is puffy, golden brown on top, and a darker brown at the edges. The Dutch baby will deflate as soon as you remove it from the oven, but don’t worry. You are left with a concoction with a crispy bottom and a soft interior, covered in caramelized melted cheese. Serve at the table (remember, the pan is really hot!) with a bowl of compote, or slice into wedges and plate. Makes 1 large pancake, enough for 2 to 3 servings.

Because you deserve the best.
ENGINE OIL Your Vehicle’s Operational Lifeline Engine oil provides proper lubrication for all the moving parts inside an internal combustion engine - to disperse heat and prolong the life of all components. Without engine oil, serious damage can occur in a very short amount of time. Modern engine oils prevent blockages and contaminants from restricting oil flow. Oil breaks down and loses its properties over time, you should always check your oil on a regular basis. We recommend every 10,000km to 20,000km. Some circumstances, may require more frequent changes. For example if the vehicle is operated under abnormal conditions like 4 wheel driving, towing, racing, or excessive stop-start driving.
25% OFF ON ALL CELLULAR SHADES
It is also important to use the correct grade and specification of oil in your engine. Many modern European and diesel engines require certain additives which are present only in specific oil grades, and using the wrong specification can cause major and expensive engine and component damage.

A Pacific loon I have a confession. I work for CPAWS Yukon and I’ve never been into the Peel Watershed. (The small exception is the time I canoed the Blackstone River when I was a kid). Still, I’ve never hiked the jagged ridgelines of the Mackenzie Mountains, or admired the crimson-speckled stones on the shore of the Snake River. I haven’t watched dall sheep wander down to salt licks overlooking the Wind River. I haven’t tasted smoked whitefish at a Tetlit Gwich’in fish camp.
T
hen why do I feel such an affinity for the Peel? Conservation photography is a big reason why. For decades photographers have been sharing compelling images from the watershed. Without these photographs I’d have a vague sense of there being mountains, rivers, rocks and trees, but no appreciation for the character of the watershed. Photos bring it into focus. Some images distill the play of light across mountain vistas, and others portray the precise details of the landscape, like wildflowers trembling in the wind, or the intensity of a fox’s gaze. Photos of elders stringing up fish to dry show human connections with the watershed, while images of soaring canyon walls dwarfing canoers capture the sheer scale of the land. Photography is a powerful tool for conservation, especially in the expanses of the north, where it
can help people relate to places where they’ve never set foot. We’re fortunate to have worked with photographers like Peter Mather, and organizations like the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). We need to be careful, however; photos may reinforce conceptions about wild spaces being “untouched,” when in fact Indigenous Peoples have inhabited and shaped landscapes across millennia. It’s important that conservation photography recognizes the relationships Indigenous Peoples hold with the land, but that brings challenges too. Photography projects shouldn’t only benefit the photographer, and need to be built on trust. This is something Photojournalist Keri Oberly explored in an excellent piece called From Assignment to Ally. cont’d on page 19 ...
