Idiomatic Origins with Josephine Holmes

Crossing your fingers is more than just child’s play

A

promise made is a promise kept, as they say. However, as a child, promises that were made were not always kept. And sometimes, shamefully, promises were made with fingers crossed behind our backs, a move that rendered the promise null and void.

My mother, Florence, was one of the kindest people you could meet. My teachers were upstanding individuals. Both had taught me well. So where did I learn these things? In the schoolyard.

And what was said in the school-

This was about the same time, when I was eight or nine, that “liar, liar, pants on fire!” was a common, not-so-kind refrain on the playground. I can’t remember the comeback for that, although I’m sure there was one (children are witty).

Anyway, crossed fingers had multiple meanings. Finger-crossing was used positively (still is, even now) to wish another good luck. You could employ one of many variations to let someone know you were crossing your fingers for them.

Going back to its early origins, it was commonly used among Christians as they formed the sign of the cross. This originated with the early Catholic Church and signified the power of the cross for protection—a sign that could be

made by one saint or even by two, just as you might see one person placing their hand over another’s as a sign of support. It was believed to ward off evil, whether real or perceived. I have used the sign of the cross myself, though gesturing in fun when faced with something I was tempted to eat, but knew I shouldn’t.

In an even more rare sign of support (one I have not witnessed), someone may link their index finger with another’s in a show of support likened to a pat on the shoulder, a hand placed on top of another’s, a thumb’s up, an A-OK, or even a wink.

As for child’s play, I soon learned that crossing my fingers while making a promise just did not feel right. And I definitely did not enjoy being called a liar whose “pants were on fire” (the verdict when a promise was not kept).

Gestures are useful, indeed, but crossing my fingers is one gesture that I left behind so very long ago. Right after I pronounced myself “King of the Castle.”

human and robotic players whose instruments range from traditional flutes and marimbas to pots and pans, even bits of scrap metal.

“You’ll have a different experience than the person sitting next to you, depending on where you choose to look,” according to Sarah Fornace, one of the five artistic directors of the Chicago collaborative theatre company, Manual Cinema.

“And every experience of the show is the right one to have.”

The show is Frankenstein, the

latest creation of a group born 10 years ago this summer when Fornace met Julia Miller while they were both working with an outdoor-theatre company called Red Moon.

Chicago, Fornace said, is “a really rich place, full of young artists who are interested in making ensemble work, coming together in groups to make original pieces.”

When Miller shared her idea for a short film project called The Ballad of Lula Del Ray, about a young girl on a quest from her satellite array, Fornace immediately hopped onboard, also recruiting her life partner, Drew Dir, a writer and illustrator.

The circle expanded when Miller met two young musicians, Ben Kauffman and Kyle Vegter, at a house concert. Trained in both experimental sound design and classical composition, they offered to render a cinema-like score for the project.

Of all the shows the five coartistic directors have worked on since, Frankenstein is the most ambitious.

It was Dir who first pitched the idea of a project based on Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking novel about the hubristic scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who “creates” human life from various discarded body parts.

Fornace was already wellacquainted with Shelley’s masterpiece from a course on narrative theory she had delivered as a Teaching Assistant during her graduate work in English in Toronto.

“It’s such a beautiful example of Russian nesting-doll structure, and it’s kind of like a novel of frames, and the questions it throws about reliable narrators and who is telling what story,” Fornace says.

“The person who pitched Frankenstein was actually Drew, who not only loves that era of literature, but also grew up with Universal [Studios] monster movies. So we’re kind of

approaching it from both the films and the book.

Unlike Shelley’s original work – published anonymously in 1818 when she was 21 – the initial frame of Manual Cinema’s version is not Victor Frankenstein telling his tale to an Arctic sea captain, but the author’s own personal story.

Much of that material came from the foreword Shelley wrote when Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus was republished under her own name, following the deaths of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and her philosopher father, William Godwin.

“She has to make a defence, like ‘Hey, Percy Shelley didn’t write this novel. This is my hideous progeny; this is my masterpiece,’” Fornace explained.

“And she talks a lot about her postpartum experience, losing her first baby, Clara [she and her poet husband actually lost three of their four children], and having a nightmare about resuscitating her back to life.”

As one of the five puppeteers, Fornace portrays both the young author and the anti-hero she conceived during the welldocumented storytelling contest involving the Romantic poets Byron and Shelley, and others, on a stormy night in Switzerland.

“For me, performing the role, I really thought a lot about what Mary gets out of imagining herself as this mad scientist with unfettered ambition who brings himself down,” Fornace said.

“Like, what freedoms does she get through playing this role? And we really approach the process of her writing the novel as a part of her grieving and closing and processing a childbirth experience that she had.”

Far from the shy wallflower

she’s often portrayed as, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was actually a “firebrand” who grew up among the most progressive thinkers, writers and activists of her day, Fornace stressed.

“It blows my mind that for so many years, for over a century, she wasn’t given credit for inventing a genre [the science fiction novel]. In her own time, she wasn’t even given credit for writing a novel. It’s so unfair.”

Calling Shelley’s life “extraordinary”, Fornace added, “If I were going to write a League of Extraordinary Women, like a graphic novel series, I think I’d start with Mary Shelley.”

The Chicago ensemble’s production, though, is not just about the creator of the misguided “creator”, Victor Frankenstein Some 500 paper puppets, along with numerous other elements, combine to produce “a kind of silent-film esthetic” that explores such themes as love, loss and abandonment, as well as beauty, horror, and the responsibility of creation.

It also promises all the sturm und drang associated with various cinema versions of the Frankenstein story.

“There’s wall-to-wall music and sound design in the piece.

And the sound design is made in quadraphonic sound, just like you would have in a movie theatre, so the sound moves around the audience in 3-D.” Advisory: the performance includes loud sounds and scenes of violence.

Recreating Frankenstein

Chicago’s Manual Cinema is bringing Frankenstein to Whitehorse

he Yukon Arts Centre is presenting a recreation of Frankenstein in an upcoming show. Once heard, it is hard to forget Mary Shelley’s dark tale of creation. Published in 1818, it tells the tale of Victor Frankenstein, a man obsessed with creating life.

In his efforts, he feverishly brings together bits and pieces of different people’s bodies to terrible and unforeseen consequences.

As the story goes, while the

Shelleys were traveling with friends in Switzerland, cooped up one rainy day reading ghost stories out loud, their friend Lord Byron challenged each of them to write a horror story. Thus began Frankenstein.

Now, 200 years later, Chicago’s Manual Cinema is bringing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein back to life, recreating and patching together the stories of Mary Shelley and her characters Victor Frankenstein and The Creature.

“We were fascinated by the story of Mary Shelley, an extraordinary woman who invented a literary genre (science fiction) in a time of huge societal change,” said Sarah Fornace, co-artistic director of Manual Cinema. “Our production explores abandonment and obsession and technical sweetness—the allure of creating the thing, or solving the puzzle that can, at times, obscure the ethical issues and broader implications of one’s work. Mary’s story is the outer frame of our show, but it also intersects and parallels Frankenstein as if the storylines are each the subconscious of each other”.

Julia Miller, co-artistic director of Manual Cinema, said the story stitches together two stories to tell an unexpected tale about the beauty and horror of creation.

(A tale she said is appropriate for younger viewers who would be fine with a PG-13 film.) Manual achieves this through a combination of shadow puppetry, live actors in camera, 3D puppets, immersive surround sound design and a live original score written for an array of percussion instruments, including clarinets, flutes, cello and vocals. All are performed live.

“There are even little robots that bring the stage to life playing percussion instruments when the creature wakes,” said Miller, “who invites audiences to get onstage after the show to see the puppets up close and speak with the cast and crew. The experience is watching a feature film, but the whole thing is made live on stage in front of you … we hope the audience is moved by our story and experiences live performance in a new way that engages

Though the play has been performed at the Public Theatre in New York City and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, as well as in Nashville, Chile, Texas and more, this spring marks the first time it has toured Canada. Miller said “the company is excited to visit the Yukon and hopes to see the northern lights and experience local culture”.

Paddling in the Peel

I

n the early 1900s, when she was a teenager, Bobbi Rose Koe’s great-great-grandmother and her friend paddled a moose skin boat through the dangerous stretch of fast-flowing high water at Peel Canyon.

In the Gwich’in language the rocky, high-cliffed canyon is known as Tshuu tr’adaojìich’uu or Tshuu tr’idaodìich’uu, which directly translates as “water-rough, hateful.”

“When you’re going through it you have to pay attention and work as a team,” said Koe, who is Teetl’it Gwich’in from Fort McPherson. “There are huge eddies the size of a room and if you get stuck in one you’ll get slammed against the cliffs. You could get pushed into an area where you won’t make it out.”

Usually, the women and children would get out of the boats and walk around the canyon area.

Only the men would navigate the rough waters, but this time the two women needed to do it.

“When they made it through, they celebrated and they yelled,” said Koe. “It’s really amazing when I get to share that story and I know that my ancestors have been through that area and survived, and because of them I’m alive today and still paddle that area.”

In 2015, more than 100 years later, Koe joined a group of five youth from First Nations in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories on an 18-day, 500-kilometre leadership canoe trip that began on the Wind River and finished in Fort McPherson, NWT. Along the way they also passed

through the treacherous Peel Canyon. It was the first time Koe had paddled through without her older, more experienced family members in the boat. Once they made it through, she thought about her fearless great-greatgrandmother and she celebrated.

The 2015 journey was organized by the Yukon Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society to bring youth from Aklavik, Tsiigehtchic, Fort McPherson, Old Crow and Mayo into the wild lands. The goal was to teach leadership skills and to connect the youth to their ancestral lands.

Geri-Lee Buyck, from the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, also went on the 2015 trip after being convinced to go by elders in her home community of Mayo.

She was unsure at first—Buyck didn’t know whether she would be up to the challenge—but she pushed out of her comfort zone and she surprised herself by rising to the occasion. In the end she had a life-altering experience.

“It changed me in that I was able to awaken this strong connection and this strong eye-opening responsibility that we have as young people,” said Buyck. “We began helping more and working with our elders and leadership in our community to fight this battle in a good way, to protect the Peel.”

During the trip the group formed tight bonds. Afterward they came together to create Youth of the Peel. Moved by the experience they had travelling through the river systems, they worked to ensure the pristine wilderness was protected. They also worked to bring other youth

to the area, to see the land and breathe the air, so they could develop their own relationships with the plants, the crystal-clear water and the animals.

“We realized that we wanted to keep this group momentum going and still stay connected and work together too,” said Buyck.

“So other youth could experience what we experienced that was just so life-changing and very impactful.”

For the past few years, they have offered youth the opportunity to take the journey through the watershed where they hone their paddling skills, share knowledge and stories, and talk about the future.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 “I didn’t really want to get up in front of people and speak, but it was my grandfathers who nudged me and poked me and gave me the eye, and literally told me to get up and speak because I had a connection to the land and to the people and the animals that were there,” said Koe. “I knew firsthand who I was speaking for and they didn’t have a voice, so I had to speak for the elders and for the young people who continue to travel the area.”

The process of ensuring the Peel was protected was long. Environmental groups and First Nations have been working toward this goal for decades and there were many bumps along the way.

“There was a time when my grandfather called me and he was crying because the government was treating us like we weren’t around,” said Koe. “They were going to open it right up to development. It was like the end of the world for us because that area’s home for us.”

Both Koe and Buyck’s families have a long history in the area.

“It’s like how when you’re a kid, you want to go to Disney World? Well, my Disney World was the Peel Watershed. That’s where I wanted to go because that’s what my grandfather talked about,” said Koe. “It’s a place of beauty and stories and our people, our heritage, our culture and everything that’s where our people all came from and where our people all were living before colonization.”

In August 2019, the Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan was signed by the Yukon government, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, the Tr’ondek Hwëch’in, the Vuntut Gwitchin Government, and

the Gwich’in Tribal Council. The plan laid out how the area will be managed and protected into the future.

“It was mind-blowing to hear it was protected. I’m thankful and my grandparents are happy that most of it is protected, but I think there’s still a lot of work yet to do, and I think it’s going to take a while,” said Koe. “But I know the sun will shine over it for the rest of our lives and the lives of my grandchildren and my great-

great-grandchildren too.

“The Peel Watershed is home and it’s a healing place.”

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy INGREDIENTS

Tacos de Lengua

❑ 1 onion, chopped ❑ 2 carrots, chopped ❑ 2 tbsp pickling spice

stove for a few hours. Later on that week you can just chop, fry and tuck into some tortillas and have dinner

Quick note - make sure you peel the tongue when it’s warm just after being boiled. Once it’s fully cooled the exterior membrane is much, much harder to remove.

METHOD

In a large pot, combine beef tongue, onion, carrots, pickling spice, garlic, and dried chilis. Cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 3-5 hours, or until the thickest part of the tongue is tender when pierced with a knife.

Remove the tongue to cool on a cutting board. Strain the stock if you’re planning on using it, otherwise, discard. When the tongue is cool enough to handle, peel off the outer membrane that covers the tongue

(make sure to do this while the tongue is warm!).

Coarsely chop the tongue into 1/2-inch chunks. At this point, the chopped tongue can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To serve, heat 2-3 tbsp of oil in a large cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Sear the tongue until it’s browned on all sides, then serve tucked into warm tortillas topped with chopped onion and hot sauce.

Serves 4.

Love your liver

How I learned to do it

diets that didn’t work, so you avoid the potholes and get healing faster than I did.

There was the three-month candida cleanse without any fruit and carbs, exactly missing the foods that the liver needs to detox. The first day I ate an apple the candida was back. Candida consumes toxins and, therefore, helped to protect me from the mercury and lead I didn’t know was in my system. By trying to starve the candida I starved my overworked and underpaid liver even more.

Candida overgrowth is a message that there is something wrong in your body and candida is only the messenger. Please don’t shoot the messenger. Instead, look for the underlying cause.

Our reality is that we live in a toxic world, where we ingest even plastic.

Livers have to store toxins if they are too run down, which is often the case because they have to battle pathogens, heavy metals, or a constant stream of cortisol from stressful jobs. Once my liver got healthier and was able to get rid of toxins instead of containing, then I was able to easily shed some weight.

I was told that I had lead and mercury in my system. Lead literally gave me lead feet. I had to put my legs up against the wall to feel better. The mercury had gotten into my brain, which caused brain fog and probably was the main cause of 40 years of suicidal thoughts and depression. Just like mad hatter’s disease was caused

hy would I ask you to do such a thing? Because your liver rocks and, according to Anthony William, the author of the Medical Medium series, it has over 2,000 functions, many of which medicine hasn’t discovered yet. If you get your liver function tested by your doctor, you might be told that your liver is fine. Unfortunately, these tests only show a problem when your liver is quite sick. A traditional Chinese doctor told me more than 20 years ago that my liver wasn’t doing well.

It took me a long time to address the issue, mainly because I did all the wrong things to get healthy.

The liver is a much underestimated organ, but it’s essential to a healthy body. The brain and the heart get all the attention, but it is actually the liver that protects both of them. If your liver is com-

Then there was the keto diet. It was more fun and appropriate for my dogs than for me. I ended up with increased cholesterol levels and not the good ones. After I went back to being vegetarian, my cholesterol level went back to normal.

If what I wrote resonates with you and you want to get healthier, this is my morning routine: I drink half a litre of water with the juice of half a lemon. Thirty minutes later I drink half a litre of celery juice. Another 30 minutes later, I have a heavy metal detox smoothie. And it’s ok to eat fruit without fat and protein. As a matter of fact, from my experience it’s essential for your health and weight management.

y child just went to a sleepover and my husband wondered why all her friends’ parents seemed so much younger than us. “It’s not like we were that old when we had her,” he lamented.

I am in my mid-40s. Admitting age is not always popular. My mid-40s have taken me by surprise. I expected my hair to turn grey. I made the decision to wear it grey. I expected the grey hair, which came from my dad whose hair greyed early. I went to a hairdresser to dye my hair black again and the hairdresser told me she couldn’t do it professionally, saying I’d worked so hard to grow it in. I spent a long time letting it go. It hadn’t looked nice during that time—black line against the grey hair that grew in, but it was inevitable. My long hair was fully grey by my sister’s wedding and I expected my younger sisters to tease me. Years later, though I must have seen the same change in some of my relatives, I was surprised to see my eyebrow hair go grey.

There were a few other unexpected changes. The women I knew from previous generations didn’t talk about them openly. I don’t want my own daughters to reach my age and be caught be caught off guard.

I don’t want women readers to reach this age and be surprised by long periods, cramps like they had when they were 13, short periods, or long stretches without periods before they return. I don’t want my children or readers—both men and women—to be surprised by uncontrollable mood swings, depression, or the increased anxiety and irritability that come with the grey hair and the menopausal hot flashes.

I don’t get the hot flashes I saw in previous generations. My face doesn’t turn red. I didn’t receive joke hand fans to help with hot flashes. (Some women don’t get hot flashes I’ve since learned.) So when I got dizzy sometimes, or had trouble focusing, I thought it had nothing to do with menopause.

I looked to previous generations for advice, which ended up surprising me. They’d been through it all—mood swings, vertigo, bloating, clamminess— but they hadn’t talked about it. I looked to medical help, due to some of the unexpected changes in my own body. I left an appointment at the Yukon Women’s Midlife Clinic, practically skipping, with a sheet titled “You’re not going crazy … It’s Menopause,” which listed the top 40 perimenopauseal symptoms. I wasn’t going crazy. The sheet included irritability, moodiness, increased anxiety and even dizziness. Weakened fingernails are also on the list.

For a while, my nails had been breaking. One of my nails even broke before my appointment there.

• Overall, the clinic has received a great response and has been successful with patients because it fills a gap in services specific to menopausal women. Part of its success is that it’s the only collaborative care menopause clinic in the Yukon.

• Perimenopause and the menopausal transition will occur in every woman’s life.

It can be a very challenging time for some women and the clinic provides support, education, resources and health care services specific to this transition. It also helps women navigate changes that can occur during this time of transition, hopefully helping with the entire journey through menopause.

• Similar clinics across Canada focus on women’s midlife health.

• Yukon family physicians provide excellent care to patients. Unfortunately, many of the women who come to the clinic do not have a family physician.

The clinic also occasionally sees women who have a family physician. In this case, the clinic collaborates with that family physician regarding that woman’s care.

Japan in a nutshell Beautiful countryside, incredible food, kind and respectful people

Part 1 of 2 destined. Next you have a choice of one, two, or three weeks. Finally, you decide between regular class, or green class, which is a first class option. The green cars are slightly nicer and roomier with more luggage storage options. The downfall is the price of the pass is higher and all seats are reserved, so you must always stop into a Japan Rail office to book a seat in person before every train ride. If the green car seats are already booked, you end up in regular class anyways. The regular class seats are more than good enough; they are comfortable, clean and there are luggage racks above the seats. I briefly considered the green car option, but was completely satisfied with the regular fare pass.

You can pre-book seats at no extra cost on regular fare cars as well, but the option to just hop on unreserved cars gives you far more flexibility. I opted for a countrywide, three-week, regular fare ticket and was pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. The rail system itself is a little intimidating, but most signs and announcements are offered in English as well, for the benefit of tourists. I found an app by Navitime called Japan Travel that was extremely helpful for planning train times, navigating transfers (especially between Japan Rail and Shinkansen aka bullet trains) and figuring out which trains are covered by the pass. Pretty well all trains between towns are covered

by Japan Rail, including Shinkansen, but you may find intercity transport (especially in Tokyo) is not covered.

Anything that isn’t covered the app will tell you roughly how much it will cost.

We love Japan but does Japan love us? The answer is a resounding, “kind of.”

The country seems to be somewhat split on foreigners and I can safely say it only takes about five minutes there to understand why.

While tourism is growing and foreigners are warmly welcomed, we can also come as a nuisance and it’s important to understand the little ways in which we can be more respectful. From what I observed, they have built a culture around not irritating other people in public. You will hear announcements on public transportation asking you to put your phone on silent and not answer calls. It is considered rude to have loud conversations in public spaces, so be mindful of those around you and how you may be impeding upon them. Japan, as a whole, is very orderly, so word to the wise, if it exists then there is a line to it and you better queue up like everyone else.

From trains to restaurants to exhibits, there will be orderly lines and it is a sin not to adhere. Be mindful around shrines and temples as there may be signs requesting no photographs. Noise should also be contained within the premises. There are few garbage cans around and somehow no litter anywhere, so please be like the locals and carry out whatever you carry in. The easiest place to find garbage disposal is at convenience stores, though it’s customary to purchase something from the store to use their facilities, includ-

ing garbage receptacles.

These little efforts to be respectful to locals will go a long way to bettering our reputation while visiting.

If you are linguistically gifted and interested in learning Japanese, even a few words will greatly please the locals.

Most days I feel like I barely have a handle on English so I tend to shy away from butchering other languages, but I can tell you that any effort is sincerely appreciated and when you make mistakes you’re more likely to amuse them than you are to offend.

The food is to die for. I can’t say that I had a single bad meal. The gyoza are steamed to perfection, ramen is piping hot, the sushi is so fresh it may have been swimming in the tank beside you seconds before, yakitori is an experience more than a meal. Even the 7-Eleven food is great. The foodies will riot, but I swear it’s actually good and convenient. When you need a snack, why eat chips when you could have chicken and rice and veggies?

Oh, and there are bakeries everywhere which I definitely didn’t not binge on. If you are adventurous in the realm of food, both horse and chicken sashimi are available to try.

Personally, I stuck to the fresh-out-of-the-oven doughnuts and surprisingly good vending machine coffees.

had high hopes for Japan and my expectations were still blown out of the water. I don’t think I could be more in support of absolutely everyone making time to go explore this very special place.

I have always had a soft spot for Asia; its way of looking at life through a totally different lens. If you’ve been anywhere over there, I’m sure you understand why Asian tourists take pictures of absolutely everything while they are in North America and you’ve likely been guilty of doing the same over there.

Japan is easily the safest country I’ve ever wandered, so if you’re intrigued by the pull of the east, but hesitant about foreign travel in a nonEnglish speaking destination, this is the country for you!

My travels began in Sapporo, went all the way to Ibusuki and back up to Tokyo, all by rail. The Japan Rail pass is a unique opportunity offered to tourists only. You do have to apply beforehand and receive your voucher by mail before entering the country.

There are a handful of online agencies that offer passes.

I would suggest looking at a few options, as prices can vary though the product is the same. Allow about two weeks for your pass to arrive in the mail. It should be redeemed at a Japan Rail office in Japan within three months of issue. Getting started is simple. First, choose where you want to travel. Will you be in one area of the country, or do you need to be covered for everywhere on the main islands? There are multiple options of area coverage depending on where you are

Getting on the Wrench PROFILES What motivated you to get into this trade?

When I was in high school I joined a Skills Canada Yukon Skills club for hairstyling. After learning about the trade I was totally motivated to make hairstyling my full-time career.

Was there someone who got you excited about this path?

Erin Neufeld, who was my co-worker and Skills Canada Yukon coach at the time, was a huge influence for the trade.

Was there a class in secondary school that helped you be more proficient at the work you do now?

There was no hairstyling class when I was in high school. I was able to take a class called “work experience” which allowed me to do a work placement at Kutters Hairstyling. Being able to do a work placement before going to

What is the best part of being in your trade?

Helping people feel more confident with themselves and helping people express themselves with their hair.

What does a regular day look like for you in your job?

My days are different every day! I could either have a bunch of haircuts, or more colours that day, or a good mix of both.

If you met someone who was looking at getting a job in the trades, what piece of advice would you give them?

I would tell them that having a trade is an awesome thing to accomplish and you are able to practice your trade wherever you want.

How has your trade, if any, made your life better?

My trade has let me become a more outgoing person! Further, becoming a hairstyling coach for high school and postsecondary students, which is very rewarding. I am also very lucky to have met fellow hairstylists (who) are a huge inspiration in my career and to get the opportunity to learn from them.

What is the most interesting thing/project you have worked on?

I have had lots of interesting projects! Colour corrections and doing fashion colours on clients usually takes multiple appointments, or at least a day to a half-day of work.

I love the challenge and to see the process the hair goes through to reach the client’s goal.

A play on words

Vuntut Gwitchin language and stories told through radio plays

Leonard Linklater, Gwaandak Theatre co-founder, a Vuntut Gwitchin citizen and one of the creative team members, believes that theatre is an important tool for healing.

“Our language and culture have been heavily disrupted through the colonization process.

Language, education, spirituality, ties to the land, everything has been affected. I am looking for tools to regain all of that. Storytelling through theatre seems like a natural fit because there has always been storytelling and it has been very theatrical in Indigenous culture. It’s a great way of reintroducing stories, moral teachings and history in an entertaining way,” he said. “These stories hold the rhythm of the land in them and are a source of strength in a challenging environment. Language grows out of the land. The stories reflect our relationship to that land. The more you are tied to the land, through strong roots, the more confident you are to grow as a person. These stories also teach non Gwich’in people the importance of the caribou, land and water to the people of North Yukon.”

Patti Flather, Gwaandak Theatre co-founder and one of the creators of the radio plays, discussed what she saw as the biggest challenges in creating these plays.

This was meant to increase awareness and spur actions to promote and protect Indigenous languages around the world. According to the UN, an estimated 6,700 (or 40 per cent) of the world’s languages are in danger of disappearing.

The majority belong to Indigenous peoples. Gwich’in, the other seven Yukon Indigenous languages (Hän, Kaska, Northern Tuchone, Southern Tuchone, Tagish, Tinglit, Upper Tanana) and the majority of Canadian Indigenous languages are identified as endangered.

Within this context, and understanding the importance of both language and storytelling to Indigenous culture, Gwaandak Theatre has partnered with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government. This partnership has produced a series of radio plays entitled Ndoo Tr’eedyaa Gogwaandak (Forward Together)—Vuntut Gwitchin Stories. The radio plays are based on stories from the village of Old Crow, Yukon, ranging from before contact with settlers to contemporary stories.

Elders, community members and theatre artists collaborated in Old Crow more than three years ago, taking part in storytelling sessions, theatre workshops and public readings. They also co-wrote

“One of the challenges was just getting started. We had to develop trust. We needed to allow the people contributing to work at their own pace, to find a rhythm.

Sometimes I needed to slow down and listen better.”

Linklater expanded on the steps involved in the process, beginning with Vuntut Gwitchin Heritage Department’s archival recordings of long-ago stories in Gwich’in with English translations.

“In some cases, such as with Sarah (Joseph) Abel Chitze’s telling of Vah Srigwehdli’—The One Who Survived, we would hear the story as told in Gwich’in, review and discuss the English translations, then dramatize that in English and translate the script back into Gwich’in, while making sure elders and the community approved.”

While Linklater thinks that saving a language ultimately comes down to communities and families trying to reclaim it and reintroduce it, he also believes that these plays have already been a success.

“They are a success because people are talking about them and hearing the lessons that these stories tell. Creating the radio plays was also very empowering for the people involved, as writers and performers.”

Even Linklater learned something about his people through the creation of the radio plays.

“I learned how open they are telling a story. They just dove in and they were laughing all the time.

We saw how much they cared and how much they would go out of their comfort zone to tell their stories. That surprised me and they did a great job.”

Flather expanded on that growth in participants.

“There are many performers in the plays who didn’t think that they could speak Gwich’in, but working through the stories, they realized they knew more than they thought and are speaking Gwich’in in the radio plays.”

Gwaandak Theatre has been empowering Indigenous and northern voices since 2000. As the only Indigenous-centred theatre company in the Yukon, Gwaandak is committed to presenting artistic programming that promotes meaningful reconciliation and deeper understanding between Yukoners, both Indigenous and settlers. Gwaandak’s stories explore themes of decolonization, cultural identity, social justice and human rights. One meaning of the word Gwaandak in the radio Flather and Linklater explained that while Gwandaak has changed

professionally over the years by getting its own office space, having more permanent staff, developing a board of directors and having more national touring, it has always challenged people, utilized non-traditional theatre spaces and looked to engage Yukoners.

Linklater emphasized the importance of diversity. “We try to aim for engaging the communities.

I think it is important that they are represented and reflected in work done by Yukoners. It is important to fulfill our mandate to reflect diverse voices.”

The radio play podcasts, as well as illustrated script booklets, in Gwich’in and in English, have been released on VuntutStories. ca and are free to download. The play podcasts and booklets will be widely shared with radio, schools, First Nations and the public.
