ultured Fine Cheese is owned and operated by Larra Daley. Behind the scenes, her husband, Stephan Biedermann, offers her moral support and carpentry genius. The shop, which is located in Horwood’s Mall, opened in June 2015. Daley became interested in fine cheese because her holiday meals often included cheese platters and friends—snacking and sharing cheese with great company. She said she has always loved great food and “cheese is so naturally conducive to relaxation and socialization.” With Cultured Fine Cheese she wants to “build a culture around that; spread a little joy, happiness and togetherness through the tasty medium of cheese.” Though Daley was unsure about the shop’s success, she overcame her fear of failure and is grateful

for the community support she’s received. She said locals have truly been at the heart of the sustainability of the business. Cultured Fine Cheese sees increased visitors during the holidays and from June to August. The additional floor space that accompanied a move in November 2018 has allowed Daley to welcome and assist more customers. She feels honoured that many of her regular customers introduce their visitors to the shop with a good measure of homegrown pride. The shop’s most successful sellers include Swiss cave-aged Gruyère, and Canadian classics such as Appletree smoked cheddar and Lindsay clothbound cheddar. Depending on the season, the shop can have anywhere from 100 to 125 varieties available from importers in Canada and Europe. Some suppliers

even hand-deliver their goods. “A big highlight of 2019 was having the opportunity and honour to feature Klondike Valley creamy cheese from Dawson,” said Daley. Varied suppliers allow the shop to offer a broad selection that has increased since the November expansion. This, in turn, has increased sales. The oil and vinegar bar has become a draw and the diversified selection includes cheese and many accompaniments from sweets to savouries, local to import. Cultured Fine Cheese has become a specialty shop that offers the necessary ingredients for a fabulous meal and the perfect snack. Erika Serviss-Low is the current What’s Up Yukon Editor. She is happy to see the mountains and hear Yukoners’ stories.

ver wonder why some young people grow up without difficulty while others struggle? Think back to your childhood and teen years and reflect on the structures, activities and relationships that contributed to who you are today. Were there key people or experiences that were in your life at just the right time to help you find a positive path forward? Does your child have several caring adults around them who can help build those similar experiences today? Based on research by The Search Institute of Minnesota, there are 40 factors that are essential to young people’s success. These 40 developmental assets include traits, values and experiences that all young people need to be healthy and successful, and to reach their full potential. Many youth-centred programs throughout the Yukon are currently using these assets to build programs for young people, but we also have a responsibility as individuals to build good things for young people so they are on a good path. They say it takes a village to raise a child. We need to ask ourselves, what are each of us doing as villagers? The 40 developmental assets are common sense things that all young people need. They are grounded in more than 25 years of research on child and adolescent development, risk prevention and resilience. Regardless of gender, ethnic heritage, economic situation, or geographic location, the more of these assets young people have, the more likely they are to thrive, make healthy choices

and avoid harmful behaviors. The beauty of the assets is that anyone can build them for young people. Building assets is as easy as calling a youth by their name when they are serving us at the grocery store. Imagine how the young person would feel if every person who went through their checkout during their shift interacted with them in this positive way? The assets are broken down into two categories, including external assets and internal assets. External assets are the supports, opportunities and relationships young people need across all aspects of their lives. When a young person feels supported, has clear rules, boundaries and expectations at home and at school, and is encouraged to use their time constructively, research shows they are more likely to be successful in school, maintain good health and resist dangerous situations. Internal assets are the personal skills, commitments and values young people need to make good choices, take responsibility for their own lives, and be independent and fulfilled. Adults can help

All are welcome to learn about the 40 developmental assets on Monday, March 9 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the community room at the Whitehorse Public Library.

Yukon’s 40 developmental asset model is grouped into these categories: • External • Support • Empowerment • Boundaries and expectations • Constructive use of time • Internal • Commitment to learning • Positive values • Social competencies • Positive identity build these internal assets through the positive relationships they create with children and youth. Every interaction we have with young people has the potential to change how they see themselves and their future. The Yukon’s 40 developmental asset model is not a program, but a mindset. Increasing assets will improve the lives of Yukon’s young people by enhancing their health, education, and physical and mental well-being. We can all build assets for young people by simply having a positive relationship with them. To download a copy of the “Yukonized” asset list, visit Yukon.ca/40assets. We’re all old people in training

“W

e’re old, we’re bold, behold!” That’s a phrase that I love. It’s from the book, This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism by Ashton Applewhite, available in the Whitehorse Public Library. This book changed many of my ideas about aging and gave me renewed energy to explore this journey that we all share. Applewhite describes herself as an “old person in training,” an idea first coined by geriatrician Joanne Lynn. It acknowledges that no matter our gender, race, class, or age, we share this common path. It challenges us to truly look at and listen to older people and recognize the underlying messages in our society that stereotype older people. From this point on in this story, I’m going to refer to older people as “olders.” What is it that makes some of my younger olders so reluctant to admit they’re collecting their pension, qualify for the senior discount, or that they’re a member of the Golden Age Society, ElderActive, or Yukon Council on Aging? I think it’s ageism. The term was coined in 1968 by Dr. Robert Butler, a gerontologist and psychiatrist. When someone assumes

another is too old to do something and sets a limit on activity, appearance, or relationship, that’s ageism. It can apply to young as well as old. I admit I’ve been guilty of thinking “oh no, another senior moment,” or “I’m losing it.” When I’ve forgotten to do something, I have used those phrases. Who says that people 30 or 40 years younger than me are never forgetful? Maybe I’ve forgotten to do something because I’ve had a very busy schedule, or perhaps it wasn’t a priority for me. Granted, if it occurs regularly, or others often notice it, maybe it is an issue and I’ll get it checked out. In the meantime, I’ll continue to make to-do lists, update my calendar daily and practice being mindful—being here and now and

Collage of the beneficiaries of the industry savouring each moment. While people may not say that old people are boring, out of it, or incompetent, they may convey this through their actions by ignoring or dismissing the ideas of olders. Olders have a wider range of interests and experiences than younger folks, merely because they’ve lived longer. Take a moment to consider that olders can range in age from 55 years and up. You don’t assume that youngsters, from toddlers to 20-year-olds have the same interests, skills and abilities. Why would you assume that olders are all cut from the same cloth and have the same interests and abilities? Get to know your olders—whether neighbour, relative, co-worker, or customer—and you will likely find an interesting character with amazing stories and a wealth of experience under that grey hair. Next time you’re at a gathering, why not take time to mix with people younger and older than you. There’s much value in intergenerational mixing. We’re constantly bombarded by ads, media and everyday comments about staying young. We seldom challenge them, or are even aware they are ageist. I decided to keep my grey hair, my wrinkles and my liver spots. I admit some days when I see my reflection in a store window, I’m surprised by the slightly stooped, old lady staring back at me. The years have slipped by so quickly I still think I’m 20 years younger! I’m happy not to have to worry about the “power suits,” coloured hair, or anti-wrinkle treatments. Have you ever thought about who benefits the most from this industry? People are denying their age and

wanting to appear younger because society tends to devalue olders and believe that old people are a burden on society. In fact, olders continue to contribute to the community as volunteers, leaders, caregivers, paid employees, taxpayers and consumers. Their contributions have often not been measured and, although they contribute economically, they also provide their skills, experience and knowledge for many of the nonprofit and recreational groups in communities. Many olders internalize this ageism and don’t believe they have any right to ask for help, question those in authority, or speak up when they have been harmed. As Applewhite suggests, we need a radical age movement. She encourages some of the following actions: Challenge ageism and reject demeaning stereotypes in ourselves, in friends and relatives, in practices, policies and organizations. Recognize we’re all an “old person in training” and create new models that break down barriers to full participation at all stages of life. Inspire and help develop caring communities that bring together generations offering their gifts at all ages. Recognize our own mortality by bringing death and dying out of the closet. I support Applewhite’s idea that “age pride is for everyone.” She suggests it’s time for “we’re old, we’re bold, behold!” to join the playlist of social movements. Lillian Nakamura Maguire, a retired rural Whitehorse resident, enjoys writing plays, personal essays and haiku, and exploring other creative expressions.

U O Y K N for A TH supporting the Comedy Nights that save lives. Prostate cancer remains the leading cause of internal cancer in men, but the associated mortality rate has been decreasing steadily in recent years due in large part to the awareness and research funded through events such as the Yukon Ride for Dad Comedy Nights. All of the money raised by the Yukon Ride for Dad is used for prostate cancer awareness and research directly impacting Yukoners. Yukon men are now able to participate in a significant research endeavour that stands to change the way aggressive prostate cancer is detected. Through helping to validate this new blood test, within the next 3 to 5 years, we can shift to sending blood instead of men out of the territory for definitive testing. This way, aggressive cancer is caught sooner and easier and can be treated before it poses a fatal risk. This is one of the ways that all of the money raised by the Yukon Ride for Dad goes to save lives and impact families right here in the Yukon. Thank you again to all of our sponsors, everyone who comes to the show, everyone who rides with us in the summer or pledges those who do. None of this happens without your support and we hope you feel the pride you deserve for supporting our efforts.

eraldry is a way for individuals, institutions and groups to identify themselves visually. Coats of arms tell personal stories about the people they represent. “While we see aspects of heraldry every day, most Canadians are unaware of this ancient art form and how it can be used for their individual visual identity,” said Steve Cowan, president of the British Columbia/Yukon Branch of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada. “Canada is unique in the Commonwealth in how heraldry is available to Canadians as well as institutions and groups.” On March 3, Cowan and his colleague David Hjalmarson, another branch director of the society, will make public presentations on heraldry and military genealogy. The event will include a presentation followed by the opportunity for discussion, and a question and answer period. Samples heraldic shields and coats of arms will be on display. Special booklets from the Canadian Heraldic Authority will be given out to the participants. After the presentation, Cowan will screen a presentation on military genealogy. Cowan hopes

igs’ feet can be a lot to prepare if you get them straight from the farmer. They’re often a bit hairy and dirty and need to be scalded and scrubbed. If you get them from a reputable butcher (like Tum Tums near Takhini, where these are from) they come clean, halved and

ready to work with. This means that all you’ve really got to do is assemble the ingredients and shred the cooked feet once they’re done. Trotters are all about texture—chewy tendon, soft braised skin,

Getting on the Wrench

“The best part of my trade is the dynamics involved,” said Laosomboon

W

hat motivated you to get into this career?

Growing up in Thailand gives someone an appreciation for food. Like in any culture that is food-centered, you learn from an early age to appreciate the composition of various dishes. As a kid, I always wanted to cook and get better at it. Back then I never thought of it as a career; however, it was a passion that I wanted to pursue. Upon moving to Canada, I gained a new understanding of trades and the status associated with having one. Realizing that being a cook is a valuable career goal was exciting news. I could take my passion to a new level.

Was there a class in secondary school that helped you be more proficient at the work you do now? My secondary school functioned differently from the schools in Canada. Instead of covering a broad range of subjects, you specialize in an area. My focus at the time was in accounting which was a respectable profession in Thailand at that time. Unfortunately, none of my courses in secondary

It has been a simple transition to go from work to school and back again. I lucked out and was offered an intern position at Yukon College, working in the same kitchen that I went to school. This was highly advantageous for me, as I did not have to overcome a new learning curve. (I) was already familiar with the system. I found this allowed me to focus more on what I was doing at work. What is the best part of being in your trade? The best part of my trade is the dynamics involved. Although it may apply to other trades as well, I find that cooking has so many opportunities. There is so much variation that no two days need to be the same if I choose. Endless combinations of ingredients and processes make each meal an exciting adventure in itself. There is so much history and culture involved that I could only just scratch the surface in a lifetime of cooking. I find cooking goes hand in hand with another passion of mine, travel. The more I explore the world and keep my mindset in my trade, the more I will learn about it. What does a regular day look like for you in your job? During a typical day I start early and finish early relative to other professions. In the morning I focus on prep for breakfast. Meals must

If you met someone who was looking at getting a job in the trades, what piece of advice would you give them? I would tell them that the most important aspect when picking a trade is to get involved in the one you are most passionate about. Don’t just do what your friends are doing for the sake of socializing. If you want to succeed, you need to care about what you are doing. If you care about what you are doing, you will be driven to learn more. The more you learn, the more you will care. It is a positive feedback loop that will guarantee success and happiness. How has your trade made your life better? My trade has made my life better in multiple ways. Firstly, it gives me the opportunity to follow my passion on a daily basis. What better way to live than to be required by your employer to do the things you love? Another aspect is my development of skill and ability over time. As I learn more at work, I am able to bring those skills home and share them with friends and family. I also have noticed a significant increase in my self-confidence. As time goes on, I

am more confident in my abilities and make an effort to show others my talents. Finally, this trade has offered me financial stability. I am very pleased knowing I can support myself through dedication to my trade. My trade takes care of me.

for cooking. This was a superb opportunity to meet individuals with similar interests. I learned a lot about myself and my drive to become a Red Seal (chef) has only grown since. It was a challenging event for me to train for and I appreciated every moment. A big thank you to my instructor, Ryan C., and my friend and skills competition alumni, Terresa K., without whom I would not have achieved as much as I did.

What is the most interesting thing you have worked on? The most interesting event I took part in was the Skills Canada competition. In 2018, I competed in the National Skills Competition

As my interest was developed in my past, there are also key individuals that helped fuel my interests. In particular, my grandmother. She was a skillful cook who supplied the family with a plethora of dishes on the daily. As her food brought joy to the family, I aspire to bring joy to others through cooking.

What was it like to go to postsecondary school and work at the same time?

be ready for students upon the opening of the cafeteria in the morning. Following this is prep for lunch period. These meals are also served in the cafeteria. I sometimes spend time organizing/developing menu items for the cafeteria or the bistro, which is an in-house restaurant. When the opportunity arises, I will help the cook students with tasks and through advisement.

Was there someone who got you excited about this path?

hen we moved to the Yukon, nearly six years ago, one of the pictures from Takhini Hot Pools Hair Freezing Contest had gone viral and my friend said, “I hope you are doing this.” I’ve since learned that the annual competition has been around since 2011. The prizes have increased in value each winter. This year, they’ve reached such great heights (the value of all prizes totals more than $10,000) that 2020 has garnered more submissions than ever before. The five categories for competition this year include best male,

best female, best group, Nongshim’s people’s choice and Tim Hortons most creative. The winner for each category will receive $2,000, an unlimited pass for the current year, and some passes for the new hot springs facility, which begins construction later this year. To enter the contest, go to the Takhini Hot Pools when the temperature is below -20 C. Pay regular admission and, once you’ve perfected your hairstyle, ring a doorbell to have a staff member take your photo. Before you leave the pools, sign up in the lobby to officially enter.

“For every entry into the contest five packs of Nongshim’s instant noodles will be donated to the Whitehorse Food Bank and Tim Hortons has agreed to donate a portion of each entry fee into the hot springs to The Outreach Van.” The contest runs until March. Vote online. All winners will be announced April 1. Erika Serviss-Low loves seeing the mountains and hearing Yukoneers’ stories.

The bead goes on

Weekend symposium brings together beaders from across Canada by Nicole Bauberger

L

Museum and Library, the University of Winnipeg, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). At the WAG, I met the new assistant curator of Inuit art, Jocelyn Piirainen (the first Inuk in this position) and saw some breathtaking Inuit beading. There were more presentations than I can do justice to here, but here are a selection. On Friday we heard about the Manitoba Museum’s scholar-inresidence program. This sum-

teresting to meet them in person and hear about the dynamics behind this internet sensation. On Saturday, Amber Sandy talked about a wonderful project she led through the Native Canadian Centre in Toronto that brought seniors and elders into dialogue around objects in the centre’s collection. To begin with, they met twice a week for eight months, but the relationship and learning continued from there. After lunch, Whitehorse re-

curators Sherry Farrell Racette, Cathy Mattes and Michelle LaVallee. They are developing a large show of beadwork for the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, opening November 2021. Together, they talked about their research for the exhibition, including a visit to the Santa Fe Art Market. They encourage Indigenous beadwork artists to send them images of their work. On Sunday, there was a presentation by Tsiigehtchic’s Margaret Nazon, famous for her celestial beadwork based on images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Nazon painted a vivid picture of her world and art practice, including personally witnessed history of how beadwork as an artform evolved in the McKenzie Delta. She also talked about how her unconventional work interacts with expectations of more traditional beading. After lunch, the conference concluded with a tour of the Manitoba Museum’s stellar beadwork collection with curator, Dr. Maureen Matthews, who welcomes its use for research, especially as part of a project of decolonization. There was also a visit with beading artists at the ManiMontreal curator Lori Beavis (left) and Winnipeg-based Métis artist Jennine toba Métis Federation. ast year there was a beading conference in Toronto. It was organized in conjunction with Beads They’re Sewn So Tight, an exhibition of contemporary beadwork curated by Lisa Myers at the National Textile Museum. Ziigimineshin Winnipeg 2020. The event took place from Feb. 6 to 9. I attended, partly in order to report back to interested Yukoners who were unable to make it. The first presenter, Métis beadworker, Jennine Krauchi, has spent years studying the collection of beadwork at the Manitoba Museum by making replicas. She screened a short film about the installation of the 20-foot tall octopus bag commissioned for the Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg, which she created and beaded with her mother, Jenny Meyer. After that, I viewed beadwork in collections at the Manitoba Craft

bead artist from Nipigon, Ontario. Her First Nation, the Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek, supported her in coming. She came hoping to learn beading techniques. She found people who shared their techniques with her informally in the context of the conference, so she returned home satisfied. If you’d like more information, come share some tea at Arts Underground on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. I will present my notes from the presentations in more detail and share more pictures, especially details of the beadwork from the collections.

Three elderly hermits live deep in the woods, cut off from the rest of the world. While wildfires threaten the region, their quiet life is about to be shaken by the arrival of two women... a luminous older woman unjustly institutionalized her whole life, and a young photographer charged with interviewing survivors of the region’s deadliest forest fire. This touching and heartbreakingly beautiful film was a favourite at ALFF 2020. In French with English subtitles. Dir. Louise Archambault, 2019, QC, 126 min. “Archambault goes straight for the heart in adapting Saucier’s novel. The result is poignant and profoundly moving.” ~ Pat Mullen

8:00pm – Les Misérables Voted best overall film by audiences at ALFF 2020, this intense dramatic look into police culture and the young, hopeless malaise of a generation growing up on the brink will squeeze you in its stunning grip well past the closing credits. When three cops of varying lawfulness cross paths with local toughs, the Montfermeil district of Paris violently descends into chaos. In French with English subtitles. Dir. Ladj Ly, FRA, 103 min. Happy birthday, Charlie Bear!

Dog-Owner relationship gains strength through life’s highs and lows by Monica Garcia

O

n Feb. 1, Rachel Morgan celebrated the birthday of her steadfast k9 companion, Charlie Bear. The female corgi/bear dog cross turned nine. A “Carcross special,” as Morgan affectionately calls her, because both parents hail from said town. Charlie is small in size, but her personality is larger than life.

This month also marks Morgan’s 7th year in the Yukon. It was here that she met both Charlie and her late partner and fiancé, Ted Lambert. “Charlie was Ted’s baby. Well, until I came along,” said Morgan with a laugh. “Then she fell in love with me.” It was Morgan who later added “Bear” to Charlie’s name, in the

her. Along with Lambert, the family of three shared some very special years together. When Lambert took ill, and then died in 2018, Charlie Bear took on an even more meaningful role.

Charlie Bear Smiling Yukon Chamber of Commerce, where she greets people from underneath Morgan’s desk. None of these workplaces were dog-friendly when Morgan and her furry partner arrived. “I totally won them over with Charlie Bear and, for

“Not unless you’re scared of her little smile.” A dog who smiles? “Yeah, it’s so hard to explain, but she basically shows her teeth. She smiles so big that she scrunches her nose and then she can’t breathe, so she sneezes. She keeps doing the same thing; smiling, sneezing, smiling, sneezing. It’s so funny!” Having grown up on a hobby farm in Ontario, Morgan drew from a large realm of possibilities when she thought to give Charlie Bear an animal companion. She decided on a pet bunny, which she named Bun Chatta, because, as she explained, “everybody names their creamycoloured pets Baileys, so I wanted to go with something a bit different.”

Bun Chatta, Charlie Bear’s pet bunny hopes of making it sound a bit more feminine. Lambert adopted Charlie Bear from Humane Society Yukon a couple years before meeting Morgan. “Ted always told the story that all the other puppies were bouncing around and excited and she was over in the corner, very meek and quiet. So he went over and said hi and she got all excited. That’s how he knew she was the one for him,” said Morgan.

some of them, it stuck. Current staff can now bring their pets in!” said Morgan. When I asked if Charlie Bear is a good guard dog, Morgan just chuckled.

Charlie Bear was a pretty chill girl, but Lambert took puppy training seriously and helped shape her into the most likeable sidekick around. To this day, she is well-behaved (she never barks!) and works her way into everyone’s heart. For example, Charlie Bear happily accompanied Morgan to every one of her Whitehorse jobs, including the ski hill, then the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous office and now the

Evening cuddles on the couch with Charlie’s favourite human companion, owner Rachel Morgan

The two (pets) fell in love right away with Bun Chatta jumping excitedly over and around Charlie Bear. Having been taught well by Lambert not to bark, Charlie Bear tends to “chomp” when she is particularly excited. Really, Charlie’s only transgressions are stealing Morgan’s socks and underwear and stockpiling them in her dog bed, along with chips, which Charlie’s recently decided she doesn’t care for. Go figure! With so few bad qualities and such an endearing personality, it’s no surprise that Morgan has friends lining up to take care of Charlie Bear when needed. Morgan calls these friends Charlie Bear’s “aunts and uncles.” I laughed when I heard that and teased Morgan that it sounded more like her child than her dog. “Yeah, she totally is. I have no interest in having children, she is my baby,” she agreed. Clearly, Charlie Bear is family and was from the moment Morgan met

“I kinda just looked at her and said ‘it’s you and me now!’” said Morgan. “Charlie Bear is a big cuddler now, but she used to sleep in her kennel. When Ted and I were in Vancouver while he was in the hospital for four months, I missed her so much. When I returned home she greeted me at the airport and we both cried. “That night, as I went to bed alone for the first time, she knew and she crawled under the blankets and snuggled up into my arms. Now that is how we sleep every night.” Much more than any material item, Charlie

Bear’s gentle nature and unwavering companionship were “a living part of Ted that carried on, that I could hold on to” said Morgan. Charlie Bear was right by her side through their grief and continues to be a most deserving and empathetic companion–smile and all!

Helping Northerners Deal with the Realities of Climate Change Yukoner Brian Horton Joins the Canadian Institute for Climate Choice’s Expert Advisory Panel on Climate Adaptation by Amber Church

B

rian Horton, Manager of the Northern Climate ExChange, has recently been appointed to the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices’ Expert Advisory Panel on Climate Adaptation.

Brian Horton The Canadian Institute for Climate Choices is a newly created independent climate policy research organization. With the assistance of expert advisors from across Canada, they will focus on providing an integrated, evidence-based and practical perspective to inform climate policy development and decision-making by governments. Horton explains more, “the expert advisory panel includes members from academia and the private sector from across Canada. We will be bringing our knowledge of climate change adaptation gained from practical experience and an understanding of the key issues from our respective regions and/or sectors - to provide guidance on areas for the Institute to focus its work and maximize its

impact for all Canadians.” Of the fifteen voices that make up the panel, Horton is the only member based in one of the three Territories, although he highlights that one of his fellow appointees is from Labrador and does some amazing work with the Inuit in the Eastern Arctic. Reflecting on the opportunity, Horton says, “It’s exciting to have a voice at the very outset of this new organization. There is a lot of potential for this group to provide new ideas and propose solutions to some of society’s biggest and most complex challenges.” He adds, “I’m also honored to be surrounded by some of the foremost adaptation experts in Canada on this Panel. I look forward to not only providing a northern voice on the panel, but to bringing home some lessons that could help the North as it faces the challenges of climate change impacts.” Ensuring that Canada’s North has the knowledge required to make climate-informed decisions is nothing new for Horton – it is

the core of the work that he and his team at the Northern Climate ExChange do. Horton explains, “We are doing research, and translating climate knowledge that is tailored to the needs of the North. In the North, we see the effects of climate change in our daily lives, and at Northern Climate ExChange we are working to answer some of the really tangible questions that northerners have about what climate change means to them.” Currently most of Northern Climate ExChange’s expertise is focused on understanding permafrost, hydrology, and some of the many social impacts of climate change. “For example,” says Horton, “we work with Yukon Government’s Department of Highways and Public

Fieldwork around Aishihik Works to investigate how permafrost thaw will continue to impact Dempster Highway. We are working with Yukon Energy Corporation to develop forecasting tools that will allow them to project river flow and make informed decisions about water management. Also, we are working with Yukon First Nation partners to develop better access to climate research, and more targeted studies that begin

to address their questions regarding climate change impacts.”

Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.
