Who’s behind the mask? Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous brings a masquerade to this year’s festival by Amber Church

The Masquerade is YSR’s big Saturday event

MLA FOR LAKE LABERGE
here have been some changes to the “traditional” Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) schedule for the 2020 iteration. One of these was to make the Quest for the Crown Coronation more family-friendly by shifting it from a ticketed evening event to a free event that takes place Saturday afternoon at the main performance stage. By doing this, YSR freed up a space in the schedule for a new signature evening event—the Masquerade Ball. “We wanted to keep the ‘ball’ aspect of the event on the Saturday night,” said Heather Grant, YSR board member and the or-
ganizer for the ball. “We believe that the masked ball will appeal to all generations (19+) and will be a great night to dress up, dance and have a great time. “We wanted an event that everyone could participate in. The only requirement is a mask. Being a ball, we also suggest formal attire.” The masquerade doesn’t have a theme beyond simple elegance and mystery—it’s an opportunity to get dressed up and it asks that attendees wear a mask. “There is something alluring and intriguing about a mask,” said Grant. “I am looking forward to seeing the variety of masks that
everyone wears.” The Masquerade Ball serves as YSR’s big Saturday event. Major Funk and the Employment will provide entertainment for the evening, and there will be dancing and a prize for the best dressed. It takes place Feb. 22 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at YukonRendezvous.com, or at the YSR office, located at 4230 4 Ave., in Whitehorse’s Yukon Inn Plaza. Early bird tickets are $25. After Feb. 7, the price rises to $30.
Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything, but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

oint Task Force North (JTFN) will once again participate in the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR). The Canadian Armed Forces have a long history in the North (harking back to the Yukon Field Force in 1898), and JTFN is honoured to take part in YSR and celebrate Yukon Heritage Day events. For those who don’t know, JTFN reaches out to southern units to provide support to northern operations and activities. The participation of these southern resources is crucial to the success of Canadian Armed Forces operations in the North. Every year, members of JTFN are joined by Canadian Armed Forces members from across Canada to take part in YSR. In addition to JTFN, participants include Area Support Unit (North), 440 (T) Squadron, 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Band, Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre Pacific, the Royal Canadian Navy and 2685 Yukon Regiment Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Concurrently, The Royal Canadian Air Force will have aircraft at the Eric Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport for the Kingscote Air Display.

PHOTOS: provided by Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Taking part in YSR offers JTFN an opportunity to strengthen relationships with the people of the Yukon, to demonstrate the capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces, to compete in challenging events and to celebrate the best that a winter north of 60 has to offer. During Rendezvous, Yukoners can connect with members of the Canadian Armed Forces in and around the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC). There will be displays adjacent to the CKRW snowpad near Lumel Studios, including one from JTFN, as well as the Royal Canadian Navy display bus, displays from the Canadian Rangers and the Army Cadets, and recruiters for the Canadian Armed Forces. As there are no recruiting centres in the Yukon, this is a great opportunity for interested members of the public to connect with recruit-

Log split with force ing personnel. Canadian Armed Forces members will also participate in various events, including the Community Challenge. The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Band will perform for the first time on the main stage at the KDCC. At any given time, there will be approximately 25 military members in the vicinity of the KDCC, displaying, competing and engaging in activities. To finish the festival, the Canadian Armed Forces will have a contingent in the YSR Parade. “I think the parade is one of the most enjoyable moments for visiting Canadian Armed Forces members, as it provides an opportunity for all who took part in the festival to celebrate in the streets of Whitehorse,” said Major Alex Trousdale, detachment commander for JTFN. “It is a great way to wrap up a very enjoyable weekend.” JTFN would like to thank local First Nations, the City of Whitehorse, and the Yukon for its ongoing support and warm welcome. Saskrita Shrestha is the Executive Director of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR).

The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is the place to be this February. That’s where the majority of events are taking place for the 2020 Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR).
T
he most famous, or at least the most notorious, of the outdoor activities is the Mad(am) Trapper competition. “The Mad(am) Trapper competition is comprised of four different events this year, and is meant to test both your physical and mental skills,” said Ron de Avila, vicepresident of the YSR board and organizer of this year’s competition. Events include a sede saw, log toss, chainsaw chuck and axes throw, all of which take place on Feb. 22. The event, open to men and women, ages 18 and up, has a $60 registration fee. Gold nuggets are given to those who place in the top three. “It’s a great way to show off your crazy outdoor skills and have a ton of fun,” said de Avila. “The costumes, the personalities, the events bring out the best in the Yukon, and to see the veterans showing the newcomers the best way to compete in the event, it really does embody the spirit of the Yukon.”
Can HEALTHY and TASTY happen at the same time?
For those who aren’t quite big enough to toss an axe (yet), there’s KIDSFEST! Programming aims to satisfy kids from toddlerage up to 12-year-olds, with a separate youth zone for those 10 to 18. KIDSFEST! takes place from Feb. 21 to 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. It includes a mini log toss, parent pull, flower packing, programming from the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, a mini tug of war, a clown and a family barbeque. The Colour War is a separate event that invites participants of all ages, though organizers caution it might be a bit intense for very young children. “The Colour War is the craziest, most colourful few minutes of Rendezvous,” said coordinator Jenna Paton. “It’s an event you do not want to show up late to because it happens fast and is over before you know it! You also want to wear things you’re ok with getting a bit messy and colourful!”
During the war, boxes containing pigment-filled envelopes are set up. There’s a countdown and then a free-for-all, during which participants grab their envelopes, crack them open and start throwing the colour around. By the time the last envelope is emptied, everyone is covered in rainbow powder. This event takes place Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. on the CKRW snowpad beside Lumel Studios. No registration is required. Visit YukonRendezvous.com for more information on all these events.
Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything, but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

tanding outside in a parka in -35 isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time, never mind standing outside in a sequined bodysuit. That’s why, this year, when Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous (YSR) hosts For the Love of Drag, it’s going to be a little more temperate for both the audience and the performers. “The drag show that we had a couple years ago was in a tent,” said Felicia Bailey-Cash, coordinator for the event. “This year it’s in the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, so it will be a bit warmer for the queens getting dressed.” Another upside to holding the event indoors, in the longhouse at the KDCC, is that capacity is greater there. Bailey-Cash said there’s space for 250 people at the venue, though she added tickets are selling quickly. A month out from YSR, half of the VIP tickets available for the drag show were already sold. The $50 price tag on VIP admission allows ticket-holders to arrive an hour early for seat selection, as well as pictures with the queens. All five performers for the evening (along with an emcee) are part of Vancouver-based Tuck Entertainment. Gloria Hole, Jerri Lynn Spears, Jaylene Tyme, Mina Mercury and Kendall Gender are among those performing on Feb. 21. VIP tickets, as well as general admission tickets ($35) can be purchased online at YukonRendezvous.com, or at the Rendezvous office (suite 900, 4230 4th Ave.). Bailey-Cash said the show starts at 8 p.m. and runs for a couple hours, ending before midnight. “It sounds like a full, fun drag show,” she said. “We’re really excited to have it come up this year.” cont’d on page 7 ...

Mr. and Mrs. Yukon 2020 are Valerie and Dan Drummond By Danny Macdonald
involved in multiple Rendezvous events, Recognition of two longtime Yukoners and the couple will be who have made contributions invited to be special guests at a number of important festivities across the territory, including visits to Dawson City for the Commissioner’s Ball this summer, as well as potentially Discovery Day celebrations. “On February 10, we get ‘pinned’ and get our banners from YOOP,” Valerie said. “And then make our first official appearance at The Royal Feast the following night. “We’ll likely attend the local Canada Day Parade in Haines Junction… and Yukoner’s Night in Vancouver.” ach year, the Yukon Order of The couple were recognized Pioneers (YOOP) selects Mr. and Mrs. Yukon in recogni- for their extensive contributions tion of two longtime Yukoners who in the community including volunhave made lasting contributions to their communities. This year Valerie Drummond they have named Valerie Drum(born Wakefield) mond (born Wakefield) and Dan and Dan Drummond Drummond of Haines Junction as the worthy representatives. They didn’t know each other when they arrived in the Yukon, Valerie first in 1973 and Dan in 1974, but it’s no secret that their partnership is quite the iconic Yukon love story. They met over Valerie’s blackjack table at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s in Dawson City. Dan may have won a few dollars, but it was the promise of moving back to town that following winter and seeing Valerie again that was the real prize that night. Dan and Valerie were married in 1976 and have always called the Yukon home, having been valuable volunteers and community members in three different places; Dawson City, Whitehorse, and Haines Junction. The recognition as Mr. and Mrs. Yukon provides a real opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to build new acquaintances, according to Valerie. “It took us by surprise when we found out we were nominated,” she said. “We are looking forward to meeting a great number of people in the territory.” As part of the role, YOOP supports Mr. and Mrs. Yukon to get

teer firefighting, organizing minor hockey, Christmas festivities in Haines Junction, work with Scouts Canada, and past work with the Yukon Fish and Game Association, to name just a few. That community spirit continues today with Valerie’s work with women’s hockey and their work for the Kluane to Chilkat Bike Relay. The year promises to be one that they’ll both enjoy and will let them reconnect with people around the territory. It’s something they’ll both be proud of for their community. “Renewing acquaintances is important,” Valerie concluded. “And we’re very excited to be representing Haines Junction and the Kluane region.”

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy
INGREDIENTS
Braised goat and mandarin orange on toasted baguette
❑ 1.1 lbs goat stew meat and pepper to ❑ Salt taste tsp ground ❑ 1/2 coriander
G
oat meat has the reputation of being tough and gamey, and that reputation is well deserved. Eating badly raised and cooked goat is like eating an old tube sock. Luckily we have a local farm that raises goats with lovely meat, which makes cooking it well a very simple task. The real trick is choosing the correct cut for your cooking method and then cooking it enough. Stew meat is a forgiving cut as long as you’ve got the time to really let it cook and rest. If it’s not tender after an hour, don’t be afraid to let it cook for another 30 or 40 minutes. Serves 2
tsp ground ❑ 1/2 cinnamon
❑ A drizzle of canola oil inch fresh ginger, ❑ 1grated cloves garlic, finely ❑ 2chopped
❑ 1 small onion, chopped ❑ 2 bay leaves ❑ 1/2 cup red wine mandarin oranges, ❑ 3halved
PHOTOS: Sydney Keddy
❑ 1-2 cups water cilantro, to ❑ Chopped garnish
Season goat meat liberally with salt and pepper
Halved mandarin oranges and chopped onions
Braised goat and tangerines
Lime, mint, cilantro and green onion for garnish
mint, to ❑ Chopped garnish green onion, ❑ Chopped to garnish
❑ Lime, to garnish baguette, sliced ❑ 1/2 lengthwise to serve
METHOD
1
Season the goat meat liberally with salt and pepper, then sprinkle with cinnamon and coriander.
2
In a large skillet over high heat, heat a large drizzle of canola oil until shimmering. Add the seasoned goat and brown on all sides, then remove the goat and return the pan to the heat.
3
Add the ginger, garlic, onion and bay leaves. Cook until soft. Add red wine and stir, scraping any bits that are stuck to the bottom of the pan. Return the goat to the pan and add 1 cup of water. Squeeze each halved mandarin into the pan, then add the mandarin halves to the pan as well. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low and cover. Cook for 1 hour, or until the goat is tender, adding additional water if necessary. Once the goat is tender and the cooking liquid has evaporated, remove from heat and season to taste with salt and pepper if necessary. Remove mandarins and chop, then return to pan.

Braised goat and mandarin oranges on toasted baguette

“W
hen your Japanese lifetime is coming out, drink all the sake you want. Have a little bash.” This quote was made famous by spiritual teacher, Frederick Lenz. If you happen to be in Whitehorse on Feb. 28, you can follow his advice at Sake Fest. The first inaugural Sake Fest is being hosted at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre by the Japanese Canadian Association of the Yukon (JCAY). Members of JCAY have worked to put the event together with the help of funding from the Yukon Government’s New Canadians Event Fund. “This event will be a great opportunity for people to learn about sake and to be able to compare them,” said Fumi Torigai, a member of JCAY. “Sake is a huge part of Japanese culture. We are happy to host this event to contribute to the diversity of cultures in Whitehorse.” Eight types of sake will be available for sampling, along with small food pairings. Some of the sake featured is made in (almost) locally, in British Columbia, while
others are made in Japan. A sake sommelier from Calgary will be on site to educate festival-goers about the different types of sake. Sake Fest isn’t just about the sake though. Special Japanese entertainment includes a dancer performing a selection of beautiful, classical Japanese dances. There will also be a taiko drum performance, which is not to be missed. The large drums deliver quite the bang, paired with a theatrical performance. Tickets for the 19+ event are $48. This includes entry, three one-ounce sake samples and catered finger food. If you like what you taste, additional sample punch cards can be purchased. Each $10 card is good for three samples. And just so you know, when you’re asking for that fourth sample, the correct pronunciation of sake is, sake-eh, not sake-ee. Additional fun facts are below: Sake can be served hot, chilled, or at room temperature. There are 11 types of Sake. Sake is usually served in a ceramic vase called a tokkuri. It
is poured into small cups called choko. Sake is made from rice that has been brewed and fermented. During the fermentation process the starch converts to alcohol. Most types of sake will contain 14 to 16 per cent alcohol content. Genshu is a sake that contains an alcohol content of 18 to 20 per cent because it is not diluted with water. In North America, we refer to Japanese rice wine as sake, but in Japan it is called nihonshu. Most importantly, kanpai is how you say cheers in Japanese. Come out to enjoy the sake, or simply to enjoy a cultural event by buying your ticket at TicketStripe. com. The tasting takes place in the KDCC’s multi-purpose room. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the event running from 6:35 until 9:30 p.m.

L
inda Leon’s newest exhibition, Wild in the City, is an exploration of the relationship between animals and urban centres. “I’ve lived most of my life in large cities,” said Leon. “Urban centres contain another parallel, world inhabited by animals. Sometimes we put them in zoos to contain them, or confine them in our homes. Humans have always tried to control what might be too wild otherwise. Wild is a threat. I think that that is why we gathered in cities in the first place. And maybe to keep the other, wild part of ourselves contained too. “I’ve always noticed and been intrigued by animals. They continue to be a subject of my art practice. In Beijing, an impossibly polluted place, you can see sparrows. How miraculous!” Wild in the City consists of 12 new works, featuring multi-media drawings, pastel drawings on paper and acrylic paintings. Horses, cats, monkeys and gibbons all make an appearance in Leon’s work. “I hope the audience will go away intrigued, thoughtful about our place in the animal world and, perhaps, with a higher regard for their house cats,” said Leon. Wild in the City runs from Feb. 7 to March 1 at Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery, located at 4129 4 Ave. The show opens with a reception on Feb. 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but, she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.

Volunteerism, a true Rendezvous tradition Have fun this winter
Seeing Rendezvous from a new angle: Miriam Smith Volunteering at KIDSFEST
by Saskrita Shrestha
W
ithout volunteers the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival (YSR) would have never started, let alone gotten to its 56th year. It was a volunteer board that came together under the leadership of Rolf Hougen, the society’s first chair, to plan the events, organize the people and source the prizes from local businesses to make the first Rendezvous possible. Ever since then, our volunteer board of directors has worked year-round to make sure we can carry on this tradition. Even with the months of planning the board puts in, Rendezvous wouldn’t happen without the hundreds of people who show up to help out every February. Volunteering at YSR is a fun and exciting way to get out and do more this winter and we hope you will join us this year. It’s a great way to experience the traditions of our annual winter festival from a new angle, and really appreciate the passion and planning that goes into every one of our events Depending on your interests you could find yourself helping out on the main performance stage in the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, helping to judge beards and tattoos at the Strength and Style Competition, or even serving bar at our Masquerade Ball, or Drag Show! It’s not just about
Volunteers at Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous
PHOTOS: provided by Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous
what you can do for YSR though; it’s also about what the society can do to thank you for your hard work and effort! Throughout festival weekend, our volunteer lounge offers space for you to hang out and warm up, or help yourself to food and beverages, all free for our volunteers! Depending on when and where you volunteer, we also have some exclusive volunteer swag for you, including engraved water bottles, toques, buttons and a commemorative volunteer photo ID badge and lanyard. Finally, at the end of Rendezvous weekend, after the parade has come in, the Colour Wars have gone off and the grounds have closed, we host an exclusive volunteer appreciation party before we close out the KDCC. Featuring special entertainment, food, drinks, door prizes and more, it’s just another way to say thank you for coming out to make our community’s festival happen! If you’re interested in joining YSR in this 56 year tradition, sign up in advance at YukonRendezvous.com, or visit our office on Baxter Street in the Yukon Inn Plaza. As always, you can also come by the volunteer lounge to sign up during the festival weekend. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved at Rendezvous 2020, where fun meets the North! Saskrita Shrestha is the executive director Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous for 2020.

Small world,eh?
Plan this year’s Camino 101 on Saturday February 22 by Dianne Homan
I
t’s a small world, at least along one of its dimensions – the line between Canada and Spain. There I was in Spain a few months ago walking the Camino de Santiago, a 1200 year old pilgrimage route, and already I’d met an orthodontist from Ottawa and two retirees from Saskatoon who knew friends of mine. Then I walked into Castrojeriz, one of my favorite towns on the whole Camino with its castle ruins on the hill and charming cobblestone main drag along the ridge. I found a new and wonderful albergue in which to spend the night and had dealt with my hand laundry and bunk set-up, and was ready for an afternoon beverage. I sat down in the sunny courtyard with two men speaking English, and after the usual introductions and Where-are-you-froms, one of the men said, “Oh, I just met someone else from Whitehorse today.” “Really? Are you sure?” I asked. I didn’t know of anyone else from here who planned to do the Camino during my dates. I thought maybe he’d confused place names. But later, I headed up the cobblestone street for a pre-dinner tour of town and met some other English-speaking pilgrims. “Yes, there’s another woman from Whitehorse. She’s sitting on the back patio right now.” So I went and found Tracy, someone I had not met yet in my role as local coordinator for the Canadian Company of Pilgrims. It turned out that one of our active members, a neighbor of Tracy’s, had shared essential information about the Camino and encouraged her to go. Weeks later I arrived in Santiago de Compostela, the historic endpoint of the Camino, and got a small room for two nights in a former monastery. It’s my regular place to stay in the city, partly because it has a fabulous breakfast

The castle ruins on the hill above Castrojeriz The cathedral in Santiago buffet. There I ran into another into Natalie, another Whitehorse active member and the first in our chapter to have volunteered as a hospitalero (or host) at albergues along the trail. Natalie’s presentations at our gatherings have inspired other locals to give back to the Camino by volunteering. To date, five of our members have participated in hospitalero training and have spent, or will soon spend, two weeks working at an albergue greeting pilgrims from all over the world. The lines between Canada and Spain grown tighter and stronger. One of the ways that our local chapter helps to strengthen those bonds is by offering Camino 101 every February or March, just before hiking season begins in earnest. Camino 101 includes a slide show, useful handouts, and lots of information about history, how to get there, what to pack, how to get one’s body ready and keep
it happy while walking, and how to navigate some cultural differences. This year’s Camino 101 will take place on Saturday February 22 from noon to 2:00 at the Whitehorse Public Library meeting room. Bring a lunch – drinks are provided. It’s a fun event that’s open to anyone who’s curious or who is planning a Camino. For more information, call Dianne at 335-4512 or email whitehorse@santiago.ca. You can find the Whitehorse Chapter of the Canadian Company of Pilgrims on Facebook. Dianne Homan has walked six Caminos and is a coordinator of the Whitehorse Chapter of the Canadian Company of Pilgrims. She is the author of Walk Your Own Camino, available at Mac’s Fireweed, Well-Read Books and on Amazon.

5:30pm – And The Birds Rained Down (Il pleuvait des oiseaux) Three elderly hermits live deep in the woods, cut off from the rest of the world. While wildfires threaten the region, their quiet life is about to be shaken by the arrival of two women... a luminous older woman unjustly institutionalized her whole life, and a young photographer charged with interviewing survivors of the region’s deadliest forest fire. This touching and heartbreakingly beautiful film was a favourite at ALFF 2020. In French with English subtitles. Dir. Louise Archambault, 2019, QC, 126 min. “Archambault goes straight for the heart in adapting Saucier’s novel. The result is poignant and profoundly moving.” ~ Pat Mullen
8:00pm – Les Misérables Voted best overall film by audiences at ALFF 2020, this intense dramatic look into police culture and the young, hopeless malaise of a generation growing up on the brink will squeeze you in its stunning grip well past the closing credits. When three cops of varying lawfulness cross paths with local toughs, the Montfermeil district of Paris violently descends into chaos. In French with English subtitles. Dir. Ladj Ly, FRA, 103 min.
