he choice of a nickname or phrase seems like a whimsical opportunity to express the fun and comedy of language, as well as a conversation piece with the contributors and readers of What’s Up Yukon. So how does a callow (not the incorrect Chasing Amy definition) editor create an atmosphere of irreverence, fun and imagination during his tenure at the publication? Rhetorical device: a use of language that creates a literary effect (but often without regard for literal significance) -vocabulary.com In this case, he seeks a phrase that, like the immortal Socrates, he hopes provokes those minds to ask questions and dream beyond the simplicity of our lives. To seek stories and tales that lay bare the fabric of who we are in the Yukon. To capture that whimsical, humorous space in the magazine that former editor Ken Bolton carved from his own irreverence. Rhetoric: the art of speaking or writing effectively a: the study of principles and rules of composition formulated by critics of ancient times b: the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion

Rhetorical: of, relating to, or concerned with rhetoric -Merriam-Webster.com Such misguided fervour to pursue the artistry of words from an un-inked editor, yet to win pen or paper, left a trail of confusion. Readers quietly wondered, “how could an editor leave such an obvious typo, or misunderstanding of literary terms, in such an obvious place?” The offending term emblazoned business cards and rested obviously in the email signature. Devise: to form in the mind by new combinations or applications of ideas or principles : INVENT - Merriam-Webster.com And yet, those thoughts lurk in the mind, sowing uncertainty and sparking questions, but never galvanizing a straightforward inquiry as to the term. The Canadian veneer of politeness forbids a question that may embarrass an editor, if he has unwittingly abused literary mechanics in such a hackneyed fashion. And so, as a farewell, an editor will make an overture of explanation for those polite souls, unsure if they should ask if it’s a typo or something else entirely, and share the stumbling pun that this editor attempted. cont’d on page 3 ...

Rhetorical Devises (a rhetorical device): to form new combinations or applications of speaking or writing effectively - Danny Macdonald, Editor - What’s Up Yukon, Sept 2017 - Jan 2020 That sentiment was the way I tried to approach this role as a caretaker for the Yukon’s cultural community, our hobbies and those stories that should be celebrated, but perhaps flew under the radar. I won’t be completely gone. Our new editor Erika has already assigned me some stories, so I will appear in the pages of What’s Up Yukon in the future. It has been a truly gratifying opportunity to share our paper with everyone.

Nicole Edwards

Local singer songwriter provides a tool for listeners by Fawn Fritzen

L

ast month, singer-songwriter Nicole Edwards quietly released a new album. Yukon Lullaby for Mental Health has just one song, but also includes a suite of mindfulness education tools. It’s an innovative take on what makes an album and, like Edwards’ past projects, it comes with a passionate cause.

5

whatsupyukon.com

“My message is that we are all in this together–through light and dark times,” said Edwards. “By practicing mindfulness tools, we can build compassion for ourselves and others.” Edwards has been practicing mindfulness for years, but when she first started, she didn’t even realize she was doing it.

“There are a few songs from Sage and Wild Roses that are related to mindfulness before I had a vocabulary for it. I was figuring it out as I went along,” she said. “If you listen to the lyrics to Grumpy Pants. . . I was naming the emotion and then shifting it using humour. I would change it now, though, if I were writing it again because there’s judgment in it. In the song, I’m saying, ‘I don’t like this feeling.’ What I’ve learned over the years with mindfulness is not to judge the emotion. But the first step is just noticing it. And sometimes that’s all we can do, is just notice it.” Mindfulness is simply the act of intentionally paying attention to the present moment without judging your experience. It is not passive. It is not clearing your mind of all thought. And it isn’t necessarily relaxing. Unlike anything else in life though, when you practice mindfulness, failure is success. That’s because the moment you notice your mind wandering (it will!) and gently bring your attention back to the present, you’ve won the whole game and it starts all over again. There’s at least a decade of research that demonstrates mindfulness meditation has measurable effects in the brain. In 2011, Sara Lazar and her Harvard team found mindfulness meditation strengthened the hippocampus, involved in learning and memory, and shrank the amygdala, responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress. Mindfulness can take many forms. It can be a formal meditation practice, or noticing the details of your lunch. It could be paying attention to sounds you hear as you walk the Millennium Trail, or sitting down after an argument and observing the emotions you feel. Or it could be music.

Edwards has been living with chronic illness for 20 years, but in the fall of 2017, her health took a steep dive. She has been confined to her bed and couch. Mindfulness became a vital tool to cope with symptoms and with her grief at losing her independence. Yukon Lullaby for Mental Health came to Edwards after traumatic interactions with caregivers in the hospital. “They didn’t have the tools to de-escalate things when I was flooded with emotion, and that made things worse.” Her response was to write a song to help her cope and self-soothe. Once she’d written it, she wanted to share it as a tool to help others. “The song can provide some dignity for disenfranchised care recipients who are going through really hard stuff,” she said. “And caregivers are human, too. They need tools and self-care.” The melody for the song is from Robert & Richard Sherman’s 1962

song “It’s a Small World After All.” The album includes sheet music, a lyric poster, a brain science poster, and two lesson plans, one for children, one for adults. The lesson plans explain how the song can be used to regulate emotions in moments of stress. Anyone can download the album for free from the Mindfulness page of Edwards’ website at NicoleEdwardsMusic.com. “Throughout my life, singing became a meditation. I needed tools, and I used them because I felt better when I used them. I’m motivated to share these tools with the hope that others can benefit from my experience,” she said. Fawn Fritzen is a Whitehorse freelance writer.

Yukon History with Doug Sack

My favourite Johnnie Johns hunting story

“He said his cow moose call was so sexy, it could make the bulls stampede.”

T

he reopening of the refurbished Caribou Hotel in Carcross this summer brought the names of two Yukon legends back to mind, Johnnie Johns and Polly the Parrot, both of whom frequently entertained in the Caribou. Your humble correspondent never had the pleasure of meeting the foul-mouthed bird, but spent many hours in Whitehorse listening to Johnnie Johns’ tell stories in Cal Miller’s Capital Hotel in the 70s and early 80s. While I chose not to believe his yarn about killing a charging grizzly with a .22 by shooting it through the eye socket, I did believe his epic story about becoming trapped inside a dead moose and nearly freezing to death. I consider it his best tale, certainly my favourite. In a nutshell (for reasons of editorial space), here is the story Johns told to a table of cheechakos in the early 70s. Cal was also in the audience but had already heard it many times. He was tracking a young bull moose he had attracted with his famous moose call imitating a cow in heat, which he said was “so sexy I could make the bulls stampede.” It was late autumn, near Halloween, but had been mild so he was tracking the bull in a light jacket and failed to notice the dropping temperature and departing daylight just as he made his killing heart shot and quickly gutted the foolish moose. With no cabins nearby for shelter, he decided to camp inside the rib-

“Slow down, youngster. Don’t rush me. I’m coming to that part. So I’ll tell you now. After half a day of lying in there thinking about all the rotten and mean things I had done in my long life, I felt so small, I stood up, brushed myself off and walked right out that moose’s asshole.” His standard reply when people asked him where he was born was “under a spruce tree.” He is justifiably famous and revered for many things other than his hunting and guiding skills, including trailblazing the route of the Alaska Highway on horseback in 1942-43 from Teslin to Carcross. For that he was paid $26 a day and $2 a day for each of his eight horses. His hunters in the 50s, 60s and 70s came from all over the world and paid him $100 a day. At one time, his clients held the world records for Dall Sheep, moose and caribou. He also bought and owned the Caribou Hotel for a while because he spent all his time there anyway and didn’t want it to close down. He was never out of money between the ages of 19 and PHOTO: Pixabay 90, or so they say. And he was also never out of Yukon stories to tell. Doug recalls a good Johnnie Johns’ tale for telling around the hunting campfire This one is just a personal favourite because it still cracks me up 50 years after I first had another chance to live my life heard it. Get ready to howl

Racers take off from the start line at the annual Buckwheat International Ski Classic

PHOTOS: courtesy of Log Cabin Ski Society

The 34th annual Buckwheat International Ski Classic honours its founder by Amber Church

B

uckwheat Donahue arrived in Skagway from Colorado in the 1980s. “He made an immediate impact in the establishments on Broadway,” said William Brady, secretary of the Log Cabin Ski Society. “After a winter in town, he famously said he’d like to start a ski race to bring more women to town in the winter.” He succeeded, and 34 years later, the annual Buckwheat International

Ski Classic has grown into a highlight of the winter calendar for many Yukoners and Alaskans. The cross-country ski race typically draws around 400 participants, marking the end of the racing season in Alaska, Yukon and British Columbia. It features 10 km, 25 km and 50 km courses for the adults and a 5 km course for the kids. All take place on the groomed Log Cabin ski trails,

north of Skagway. The race always has a theme, with participants strongly encouraged to dress in costume, along with a lot of extra fun including snow carvings and a banquet. Donahue passed away last October, but not before leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of many across the North. “Buckwheat was one of those larger than life characters and the best thing we can do to keep his spirit alive is to keep howling at the event he loved most,” said Brady. Donahue’s trademark howl was a fixture in past races and no Buckwheat International Ski Classic would be complete without at least a few howls. To honour Donahue’s memory, this year’s race will be dedicated to him. “Usually we have a fun theme

The racer’s founder, Buckwheat Donahue, dressed to impress

associated around a movie, book or character and there are hundreds of costumes,” said Brady. “This year, with Buckwheat passing away last fall, we will be honouring the man who made this all happen. But we still want it to be fun. We want everyone to wear their best costumes from past races, but we also expect a few Buckwheats and/or his old dog Leo out there. At the banquet we will be asking people to share memories about Buckwheat, in the spirit of celebration … participants can expect a howling good time. “Only about 20 per cent of the 300 to 400 people who show up every year are really racing for the prizes. The rest of us are out for a fun day of skiing on the Log Cabin Cross Country Ski Trails. The central aid station is a Mecca of sorts. Once you finish your race, everyone heads back out there for the fun. The snow castle this year will have sculptures from Buckwheat’s past. Then we all head down to Skagway for a great meal and more fun downtown.”

Brady reflected on the very first iteration of the race. “The first year, we started the race in Carcross and ended in Log Cabin,” he said. “This is before we knew what we were doing. We had Scott Home of Dyea camped on the ice of Lake Bennett. He was the aid station and all his orange juice was frozen. Anyway, I was Buckwheat’s accomplice, of course, and he planted me at the finish line while he buzzed off on a snow machine to see where everyone was. About an hour later, here comes Bob Boorman, the first of our 16 skiers, about three hours ahead of schedule. He was happy, but then he looked around and said, ‘Where’s Buckwheat?’ A few minutes later, here comes Buckwheat on the snow machine, embarrassed that he missed his first finisher. He never lived that down, but I don’t think Bob ever had to pay for a beer in Buckwheat’s presence ever again.” If you would like to get involved cont’d on page 11 ...

Buckwheat Donahue was the heart and soul of the race for many years. This year’s event will allow his many friends, and those he inspired, to honour his memory in the event, but aren’t interested in strapping on a set of skis, Brady would encourage you to volunteer. Visit the website. The event needs aid station workers, timers, parking lot attendants and more. “We have 125-150 volunteers annually, and they continue to make this race happen. We have a lot of Yukoners and Skagwegians and we thank them all,” said Brady. The 34th annual Buckwheat International Ski Classic will be

held on March 7. It takes place earlier in March than usual to avoid conflicting with the Arctic Winter Games later that month in Whitehorse. The race is a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Ski Society, based in Skagway, whose volunteers groom and set track on about 30 km of ski trails in the cross-country skiing recreation area managed by Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. The trails are located on the South Klondike Highway, 27 miles (43.5 km) north of Skagway. A link to the

race’s Zone 4 registration site is available online on the Race Entry page at: BuckwheatClassic.com.

five perennials for the northern flower garden Feel comforted knowing your flowers will return in spring

T

houghts of vibrant flower gardens seem whimsical when it’s -42 C and snow covers any evidence of those gardens. But seed catalogues are starting to arrive in the mail and what’s more fun than imagining your garden from the comfort of your couch? Vegetable farming is what we do here on the farm. My little flower garden just outside my door is pure luxury and I want it to be beautiful and lowmaintenance, without a cabbage in sight. Perennials are less demanding, as they don’t need to be planted each spring. This year hardy perennials are just what I’m looking for. Benefits of Perennials

A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years which means it will reappear each spring. It is comforting knowing that a plant will start growing in the spring without being planted. It seems like one more chore in early summer to trek to the garden centre to pick up the usual flat of petunias, marigolds and pansies. I love annuals but have decided I’d rather have my flowerbed be perennials interspersed with some annuals. I’ve asked my talented northern gardening friends and consulted The Northern Gardener by Barbara Rayment (available at Whitehorse Library) to find out what some hardy perennials are. I am excited to try these:

iums come in all kinds of blues and purples. I will try these towards the rear of my flowerbed as they’ll have support against the house wall.

Poppy

There are many annual poppies available but also hardy varieties of perennial poppies that grow well here. Have you ever been to Atlin in the summer? They seem to bloom in every garden and alley. My poppies are small, orangey-red, vibrant and abundant. They bloom early each spring and keep going until the fall. They are so fragile-looking yet hardy and long-lasting. They produce a lot of seeds and reseed themselves. I’m excited to try some different colours this year.

Primrose

Delphinium

Delphiniums do very well in northern climates. They tend to be tall and sometimes need staking, but there are shorter varieties that are as beautiful and don’t flop over easily. Delphin-

Primroses bloom early in the spring and range in colour from white to blue. I was a bit overwhelmed when looking into primroses, as there are endless varieties, but my neighbour Lara

Melnik has one called Matchstick primrose that grows well in her garden. Garden centres have lots of options. Look for healthylooking plants, preferably with unopened buds. They like welldrained soil and need consistent watering once planted.

Globeflower

They’re related to buttercups, but are larger and flashier. They last through the harshest winters up here and are prolific. They like full sun and moist soils and once they are established and like their spot, you’ll be rewarded with white to orange flowers. It’s easiest to buy a young plant as it’s hard to germinate the seeds.

Pyrethrum Daisy

I picked up a seed packet from Sage North Seed Company at the 12 Days of Christmas Market and am excited to try these. Apparently they do well in this climate and come in shades from white to purple with yellow centres. Daisies are cheerful and can eas-

ily be cut for a nice bouquet. It’s important to prune them back to promote bushiness. These daisies are also non-invasive. Oxeye daisy is an invasive species and should not be planted. Look carefully when buying the seeds to make sure you’re getting a noninvasive.

Taking Care of Perennials

A healthy garden shouldn’t need much maintenance. A cleanup in the spring works well, removing excess dead plant material. Don’t bother cleaning up too much in the fall though, as the dead leaves and branches provide insulation over the winter. Once planted, perennials require regular watering and fertile soil to become established. Perennials need to form a strong root system before winter comes. After the first year, perennials are generally more efficient at scrounging for water and nutrients than annuals. Deadheading means removing the spent flower heads. This

will keep the plants looking flashy and trigger them to put out more flowers. I let seedheads form on my poppies and pansies in the late summer as they do a good job of reseeding themselves. Mulching perennials during the growing season retains moisture and can prevent weeds from coming up. It also provides a layer of insulation on top of the soil which can help root systems buffer the cold over winter. Wood chips or straw are great for this. Dividing perennials that have grown large is important to do every three to four years so they don’t take over the flowerbed. It keeps them healthy and you’ll have some plants to share with your friends! Happy gardening and I’d love to hear what perennials you enjoy. Meredith Winkelaar likes digging in the dirt and is up to the challenge of finding the perfect perennials for her little south-facing flower garden.

Rendezvous struts its stuff This year’s Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous will highlight local designers in a fashion show by Amber Church

T

he theme of this year’s Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous is local, community participation. With a theme like that, it makes sense that when designing the festival’s first-ever standalone fashion show, the organizers would look to the local design community to bring the event to life. The event will feature the work of Sportees, the Fashion Art Design School of Whitehorse, local designer Lipstick Lou, as well as Shelley MacDonald, and Dancing Storm Creations by Calgary’s Livia Manywounds, who is a proud member of the Tsuut’ina First Nation. Although past Quests for the Crown (formerly the Rendezvous Queen’s competitions) have included fashion show elements, this will be the first stand-alone fashion show for the festival. The event will last two hours and has capacity for an audience of 250. It won’t just be women walking the runway. The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous has been working hard to make its festival more inclusive. One male contestant is joining his female counterparts in the Quest for the Crown this year and two women will join the men in the other competition that runs in the week leading up to festival weekend, the Call for the Cup. competition.) “The Quest for the Crown competition is definitely more inclusive which I think is a great thing as it represents our wider community better,” said Anne “a la Mode” Huang, Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous board member and the coordinator of the fashion show. “It moves the festival into a more modern direction without losing any of its heritage or historical charm and significance. “The audience can expect a fun two-hour show that celebrates the creativity of the Yukon. Expect to see designs from local designers, Yukon College and the candidates as well as performances from the Can-Can Line and the Snowshoe Shufflers!” The evening will be emceed by Kimberly Graw, who may be joined at the mic by guest emcee, Hon. The Delta Rambler with Dennis Allen

Calgary snowmobile

I

was driving to work this morning when I saw snowmobile tracks on the side of the road. It reminded me of the time me and my buddy Chubby had to drive from Calgary to Edmonton on an old Elan skidoo. Let me tell you about it. We were stranded in Calgary because Chubby blew his pogey cheque at the Stampede Casino. He tried to blame me cause I talked him into going there and we got cleaned out. I was going to college in Edmonton and heard through the grapevine that my landlord had thrown all my stuff onto the street for non-payment. So I was in a bit of a bind. We started hitch-hiking early the next morning and got picked up by a guy in a beat-up old truck that had a hand-painted sign on the side that said, “Sal’s Salvage.” It was mid-November and we were happy for the ride. He said he was only going as far as Olds, but would gladly take us there. When he asked us where we were from and I said Inuvik, he damned near drove off the road. He told us he used to drive taxi and bootleg in Inuvik back in the ‘60s. We had a good laugh about the old days all the way to Olds, talking about his best customers and all the shenanigans they got into. When we got there, he pulled

off the side of the road like he was going to let us out. Then he said he always felt bad for selling bootleg whiskey to our people and wanted to pay them back somehow. We suggested he give us $500 and we’d make sure we split it even with his surviving customers. He just laughed and said he barely had five bucks in change. He said he had an idea. We pulled into his junk yard in Olds and he said he’d give us a car to get home with as some kind of payback. But none of the three he tried to start actually started. He had an old Elan skidoo buried under a pile of tires and tarps which I dug out as he was trying to boost another car. I cranked on that old Elan skidoo and I’ll be damned if it didn’t start. It was blowing blue smoke and we had to run for cover or get gassed. But it ran. I told Sal we’d take the Elan instead. He was laughing like a hyena as we pulled out of his yard. We had to drive down in the ditch cause we were doggone near causing a pile-up along highway two as cars and trucks came to sliding stops to gawk at a couple of fools driving down the highway on a skidoo. Plus all them vehicles coming at us at 60 miles an hour was unnerving. Somebody must have called

the cops cause just before Bowden a cop car tried to pull us over. He was telling us through a bullhorn to pull up to the road. I knew we’d be in some kind of trouble and I was in no mood for trouble, so we just kept driving along the ditch with him yelling at us to stop. Then he took off. And about half an hour later, two RCMP on big ATV’s pulled up beside us and were waving at us to pull over. I knew damned well we hadn’t done anything wrong, so I wasn’t going to pull over. Plus it was getting dark and we had to find a place to make camp. They tried to block us, but they forgot I won the Elan race at the Muskrat Jamboree year before. I outmaneuvered them as they tried to prevent us from getting past them. I slowed down and pretended I was going to stop. But the last minute I gunned it and took off between them. They gunned their ATVs and crashed head-on and flipped over each other. When I looked back I saw one of them pull out his gun and shoot in the air. I sure as heck wasn’t gonna get shot over a little speeding ticket, so I took off. But at the next overpass, there were about 20 RCMP cars and two helicopters. One said RCMP AIR

Dennis has a tale of crashing an old Elan skidoo into a cop car PHOTO: Boombardier via Wikimedia Commons PATROL, and the other said, CTV NEWS. I tried to jump over those cops cars like Smokey and the Bandit but we didn’t have enough speed and slammed into the side of the RCMP cruiser. Good thing we flew right over top or we sure would have got hurt. We got charged for evading capture, but got bailed out by Lanny McDonald from the Calgary Flames who just happened to be watching the news. We jumped bail and headed back to Inuvik. Then one winter, the NHL old-timers played

in Inuvik against the Town Ookpiks and I was time keeping. Lanny was coming up the ice with the puck and when he saw me, did a double take, then ran into the boards. I jumped out the back and took off. If you ever see him tell him I’ll pay him back. Dennis Allen is an awardwinning filmmaker, forlorn songwriter and hopeless storyteller. He’s the only guy he knows who’s never seen the Stones.
