his morning, Kyle showed up with his bulging leather tool belt, his cordless shop vacuum, and a clutch of 16x25x1 furnace filters. It’s one of those annual rituals I’ve come to both welcome and dread.

As sure as fallen leaves and frosty pumpkins, a visit from Kyle heralds the unofficial beginning of the season that lies ahead. Since calendars and thermometers seldom agree with one another in this country, I’ve learned that a visit from Kyle means it’s only a matter of days before the inevitable descent into winter. (At this point, a gesture of comradeship and concern is in order for those who live in parts of Canada that have already been walloped by premature winter storms.)

Kyle is young, efficient, and well-bred enough to take off his outdoor shoes without even being asked. He’s able to dismantle our gas-fired furnace, tweak its innards as required, and remantle it (according to the Urban Dictionary, that word actually exists) in less than half an hour.

The first time he came, two years ago, I felt the Geezer’s need to hover and ask endless stupid questions about what he was doing, what each component was called, and what function it was intended to perform.

Last year, not so much. I hung around in the basement just long

Ken shares his curiosity of how things work and appreciation for those with the skills to fix them enough to ensure myself that he didn’t need my help. Today, I merely said, “You know where it is. Let yourself out when you’re done.”

As someone who is endowed with endless curiosity about how things work, but little in the way of practical skills, let alone much eye-hand coordination, I always appreciate the chance to watch an accomplished tradesperson at work.

My father-in-law, Bruce, is one such person. He’s an auto mechanic who has an unquenchable passion for the kind of vehicles people drool over at antique car show-and-shines. Even at 80+ years of age, he can yank a flathead V8 out of a 1939 Mercury coupe faster than I can Google what kind of engine a 1939 Mercury actually possessed.

And, like experts in almost

any given field, he is both able and willing to go on at enormous length about his particular specialty, even when his audience of one doesn’t really know the difference between a dipstick and a rear diff.

Fortunately, Bruce and I share two particular characteristics: we both have fairly advanced hearing loss, and we’re both too vain, too stubborn, or too lazy to wear our hearing aids on a daily basis.

Which means we can communicate brilliantly. Bruce rattles on about cars. I nod and smile, giving him the impression that I’m capable of understanding even an iota of what he’s saying.

It’s a win-win.

n the autumn of one’s life, one often sits back in the easy chair and rehashes all the good and the bad, the indifferent and some moments I don’t care to ever disclose. For the past few years, I have gone one step further and am attempting to put those memories down in a book that Lisa is constantly nagging me to finish. Actually, I don’t mind her nagging, as in another three months, I graduate into the senior class of 87 years.

Generally at that age you have lost some of your hearing and anyway my memory is sometimes clouded and I always seem to forget to put my hearing aids on.

First you have to be fair in your thinking of others, but there are times you just have to be a mean son of a bitch. You have to accept that your working days are not an eight-to-four job, but could be a 24-hour job or even longer.

You will be working alone in this specialized job, day or night. At times, you will be wanted, but other times, clearly unwanted.

When some people meet you in the backlands, they will call you conservation officer and maybe, if you are lucky, even “sir.” But when you are gone, the reference might include game warden, fish cop, or worse. When some fisherman or hunters ask you a question on some fish or wildlife, they expect a detailed explanation. But on the other hand, should you explain something to them on those subjects, they may think you are a know-it-all. Oh yes, as a conservation officer, you have to realize that if you hunt or fish in your own patrol area, you are said to be taking exceptional advantage of your government job.

That is why I chose to hunt moose a long ways from my patrol area. In fact it was a 13-hour drive to get to the wild Groundhog Riv-

er in Northern Ontario. Then it’s a day and a half to rope freighter canoes up over the Ten Mile Rapids. As we pulled the canoes with a long and short rope along the shores of the rapids and looked out into the 2 to 5 grade white caps, we knew that, with a moose in the freighter canoe, it was not going to be just one Hell of a ride, but rather, a ride down through Hell itself. On our first year down through the “The Devil’s Run,” my true-to-heart hunting buddies in the other two canoes suggested my canoe should go first because I was a conservation officer and knew how to do this stuff. In reality, they were saying, “you are a conservation officer, and therefore can be the sacrificial lamb.”

Now what about a conservation officer’s family? No doubt if I charged one of the other kids fathers for illegal fishing or hunting, there was going to be some trouble brewing at school. Not so bad with my family because I had five kids and to bully one meant the other guy better have a bigger gang than the Martin family. (It remained at five for, being a conservation officer, I studied the sex lives of animals and recognized cont’d on page 5 ...

Now things are a little different even for conservation officer’s wives. My wife would go down to the local butcher shop and ask for any meat scraps. Often the butcher, who knew conservation officers did not have a big pay salary in those days, would offer her a free roast, or four or five chops for the family. She would say it was for our pet owl. “Oh sure,” he would say, not really believing her, that is, until his cat became a side order for Hoot. Well of course there is more to the story of Hoot, but we will leave that also to PHO T the book I’m being encouraged (I think) to finish.

Forgot about those darn hearing aids again.

Of course conservation officer’s wives don’t have many things that normal wives do. Number one, they can’t expect for that dear C.O. to be home when he promises you he will be. Number two, don’t expect life to be normal or plan anything further than 15 minutes ahead.

Most normal families have pets. This could mean a cat or a dog, maybe a gold fish in a glass marine cage, or a singing budgie in a bird cage. Of course, we had a German short-haired bird dog that would become quite famous in later years, but out in the cage in the garden was a great horned owl. Actually, I found the owl near the base of a tree. It had its one eye pecked out and then pulled from the nest by the crows, just a few days after it had broken from the eggshell. As days and weeks went by, we set up a mouse trap line and would feed the dead mice to Hoot the owl. Later we would trap the mice alive and put them in the cage with Hoot and Hoot soon learned her own preparation for lunch.

Later on, I helped the police force in our small town 1,000. With just one police chief (the only cop in town), any time he called on me for help, I responded. One day he knocked on the door.

I told him to come in and wait until I got my uniform on. He quickly said that he didn’t need me to go out, but he was calling on me because of Hoot.

Now Hoot was free to go at any time but would always come back to her open cage.

The reason for the call was that Hoot had already killed 11 cats in the community, but now I should keep that story for the book Lisa keeps nagging me to finish.

As strange pets go, the next was Bobby the skunk. Of course, conservation officers have to respond to all wildlife situations.

A female skunk had been killed by a vehicle, but a newborn was staying with the body. When I saw the small skunk, it looked like the baby skunk was not yet six weeks old and would not be capable of spraying. I picked it up and took it home and put in a box in the back outside the kitchen. The next morning, I walked into my friendly barbershop and asked my friend if he would cut the white strip off my pet’s back. For some reason, using words found in the

e managed to shoot the photos needed for the annual Christmas Pageant slideshow on Sept.

28. It happened just days before the arrival of an early snowfall (one that stayed, for a change) that would have made it difficult and quite unpleasant.

Most early snowfalls here melt away and turn things to mud in just a few days, returning in earnest

by Hallowe’en, but this one lingered.

The slideshow is a tradition that goes back over two decades here in Dawson. Necessity was the mother of its invention.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church may have the largest venue for an ecumenical Christmas Eve service, but it would make a terrible place to stage manage a live pageant. The anterooms are crowded and unheated and the stage area limited in size as well.

The slideshow solution allows for a 10 or 15-minute presentation of the Christmas Story to be cobbled together, along with an appropriate narrative script, from the literally hundreds of photographs that are taken during the two to three-hour pageant shoot. This year, the plan made use of the many possibilities along Church Street, util-

soldiers, dignitaries and simple townsfolk on their way to Bethlehem as commanded by the Empire’s order for a census.

It was chilly that morning, but

needed to have people posing for tableaux.

We minimized the walking around and the returns to the Richard Martin Chapel for costume

changes by shooting the scenes according to locations and costume needs.

As a result, the scenes showing the announcement of the census and the folks walking to their family homes, one of the early images in the finished product, were just about the last pictures to be taken.

When all this began back in the 90s, we were still using slide film, which had to be developed elsewhere. We shot a limited number of pictures because it was an expensive process. Projection used to require two machines where the images kind of dissolved into each other.

Now, you can afford to shoot hundreds of images, vary the angles, get closeups and pick the best shots from each photographer.

The finished sideshow, somewhat padded by appropriate singing from a densely packed congregation, is always a favorite seasonal event.

Keep in mind that the blue box needs milk and butter as well so the only thing you need for this recipe that is not totally shelf-stable is cheese. Using this as your base you can add lots of stuff without a lot of extra work as well - throw broccoli or peas (frozen of both of these would totally work) in the water while you’re cooking the pasta, or fry up some bacon, any sort of leftover meat, or even roast potatoes. Saunders, like many of us, sees things that “suck.” But rather than getting her down, those things energize her and spark ideas of how she can contribute to making the world a better place. For Saunders, this shift in how we approach problems and challenges we see is key.

“I tend to flip things from the negative to the positive in my mind, all day long,” Saunders said.

Behind this change in how we see the world’s problems is a framework of mindset shifts Saunders believes we need to make to help us collectively create dramatically different outcomes for our communities and our future.

Among those shifts is moving from scarcity to abundance, from control to trust, from fear to radical generosity, and–importantly–a shift from being in it alone to working together.

“How can we as women bring our desire to be a changemaker to our work, whether it’s how we run our businesses or to our career in government or another sector?

I think making change is easier together,” Saunders said. “So, find the others! What are the things you want to change? Talk about them with others. Does anyone else think this is an issue? Gather together.

Make a plan. Get started. Experiment. And of course, see if you can find someone to take action with, it’s always easier together.”

If you’re feeling stuck in getting started, then starting with something small is your way forward.

Saunders sees taking action as a muscle that needs to be exercised and built. Through small steps and through dreaming about and reflecting on those steps, we can build that muscle and it can help power us through bigger actions.

With bigger actions comes the possibility of failure, a possibility that can stop many in their tracks.

The fear of failure can be so strong and persistent that it can keep some from even taking that first step.

Saunders embraces failure and has found that the many failures she has encountered in her journey are responsible for getting her to where she is today.

“My whole life has been a giant experiment with a gazillion failures on the way to SheEO,”

Saunders said.

It’s not at all easy to believe that you can create the change you want or have the impact you dream of. Many of us have mindset blocks and belief systems that make it seem impossible to get there. Saunders is no stranger to these.

“I spent 30 years in scarcity, isolated, thinking I had to do everything on my own,” Saunders said.

“When I think back now I realize it was not the only option I had but I had a ton of voices inside my head saying, ‘you aren’t ready, you don’t matter, you should know this already, they are probably too busy even though they said they wanted to help.’”

Working through these voices and shifting our mindset from problem to solution and from limitation to opportunity is a journey.

Saunders will be delivering the closing keynote at She/Ze Leads the World–the women’s leadership summit taking place in Whitehorse Nov. 19 to 21. The keynote will take us on the journey of Saunders’ thinking around shifting our mindset. She’ll show how using this framework of mindset shifts can get us to radically different models and solutions.

“This is a beautiful, painful, challenging, glorious moment in time we are living it,” Saunders said. “We’ve got a giant colossal mess globally that is all interconnected that requires us to work together, to collaborate, to care for one another. Most of the rules of the game and systems that have caused these problems were not designed by women. We weren’t at the table. We have a huge opportunity to bring forth another perspective; new models, new mindsets and new solutions to get us to a new world. It really is a great time to be a woman and to step into all of our power, together.”

SHE/ZE Leads the World is hosted by SMRT WOMEN and the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre and will be held November 19-21.

Grey Matters with Deborah McNevin

Online connections

I

n the old days–good or otherwise–interpersonal connections were via letter or phone or face-to-face. Now there are any number of interactions that can take place online and can lead to connections with real people.

For example, Facebook, where you can use your trigger finger to like what you see. You may get a momentary buzz of pleasure, or annoyance at those privacy-sucking ads. The feelings tend not to be intense, but you have to avoid the “Pavlov’s dog” response of seeking more “likes” that keeps you coming back for more.

You can up the feeling ante by commenting instead of just using an emoji (graphic) to express your reaction. Personally, I avoid commenting on things I don’t like, to avoid the anxiety and negative reactions that can result from other people’s comments and perspectives on my comment.

There are also many groups that you can belong to, where similar-minded people share similar-minded stories, ideas, articles and so on. This can help you feel secure in your opinions, but can also lead to the “bubble” phenomenon. That is where you are quite unaware that others may not share the same opinions as you. It can lead to some abrupt awakenings in “real life” such as when attending family gatherings, having dinners with friends, or even in casual conversations.

You can imagine what feelings can result from such awakenings, be they rude or gentle.

There are online support groups that can help you achieve personal goals–weight loss or healthy living examples abound. You can build some connections, however transient.

You can make some friends through online connections. The chat feature on my Scrabble app has led me to befriend a writer in San Francisco, a retired woman in Minnesota and a friend of my now-deceased aunt in Ottawa. We inquire about each other’s doings and share key events in between bouts of fierce Scrabble battles.

That’s fun, I think, especially on days when it is hard to get out of the house.

Texting as a means of connection mostly sparks feelings of frustration in me, due to its limitations and my arthritic fingers. The speech feature in some keyboards for texting can be great. It can also lead to some rather hilarious bloopers if you don’t check it carefully before hitting send.

There are a number of apps that have emerged as leaders in communications, other than Facebook. I have used some of them, but have stopped due to data breaches, (like What’s App, now owned by Facebook.) Online tools for connections can lead to feelings of paranoia due to privacy concerns, but it may not just be paranoia. For example, have you seen the ads that crop up almost immediately after you’ve searched for something? Creepy.

You can turn off that personalization, but there is no doubt some

Online connections can strengthen existing friendships or family relationships. Aside from video or voice calling, they are not great for repairing said friendships or relationships.

My last example is a rather sad one. I used to belong to a virtual support group for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Members posted daily, or weekly, or occasionally, depending on their circumstances, or their desire. There were (still are) many shining lights of hope and some very strong-willed people posting on this forum.

The personal stories of struggle could be inspiring and/or spark anger at the callous treatment

of some health care systems. As the disease progressed for some, there was a notable sense of loss.

When several leaders of this group passed away, the sorrow and grief was almost overwhelming, even though we had never met in person.

In the end, I withdrew from regular contact with this forum. I still check in occasionally, but I do not participate regularly. I guess I prefer my online bubbles to be a little more grief-proof.

Overall, I value my online

connections. I do look for opportunities to learn and develop friendships through these means, although they do not and cannot replace the sense of community and belonging through “real-life” interaction.

Remembrance Day 2019

THANK YOU from the Whitehorse Legion

TO ALL YUKONERS for supporting the 2019 Remembrance Day activities throughout the Yukon.

The City of Whitehorse, Staff of the Canada Games Centre, City By-law Department and Whitehorse Transit.

The parade, colour party and cenotaph guard participants: Veterans and Legion members, Canadian Armed Forces members, RCMP members, RCMP Veterans, Whitehorse Fire Department, Whitehorse Correctional OfďŹ cers, Yukon Regiment Army Cadets and Air Cadet Squadron 551. The Midnight Sun Pipe Band. The Whitehorse Community Choir. The St John Ambulance. Scouts and Guides. All the wreaths layers. All Legion members and non-Legion persons who offered poppies to the public.

The businesses that allowed us to leave poppy trays at their place of business and those who displayed Remembrance Wreaths at their businesses. The Yukon schools and senior care facilities for inviting us to participate to their Remembrance ceremonies.

The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse for ying the Poppy Flag. OMNI Production. Our bugler.

Our Chaplains: Dean SeanMurphy and Father Szwagrzyk. The Legion Staff and the many Legion volunteers.

Funds raised will be used to support Yukon Veterans and their families: by providing PTSD support programs, specialized medical aids, the purchase of a service dog and supporting Honour House; which provides a home away from home to Veterans and their families undergoing medical treatments in Vancouver.

Wreaths will be placed on the headstones of our veterans.

A Veteran is a person who has served as a regular or reservist member of the Canadian Armed Forces or Allied Forces and members of the RCMP; in NATO operations, in UN peace missions and/or at home.

The Whitehorse Legion is forever grateful for the support of the Yukon community.
