Erin Holm tributes her late father by donating partial proceeds from her work to support cancer lodges in Western Canada

E

rin Holm will never forget the phone call she got while living in Australia in 2015. It was her father, calling to tell her he had been diagnosed with cancer and had only months to live. Holm moved home to Canada to be with him. In that time, he told her something important. “I will never retire, or travel, or do the things I wanted to do. I waited,” he said to Holm. “You never wait! I envy you. Now be the Erin I raised, and fight to find the job and life that truly makes you happy.” After his death in March 2016, Holm moved back to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The wood art that she had started crafting in her father’s garage on Vancouver Island as a way to get a break from his bedside, became an outlet for her grief that continued after his passing. That crafting has evolved and

now the wood photo transfer prints and home décor designs use Holm’s own photography and designs. She found she could make and sell to friends, family and others, while donating some to cancer lodges. “I soon realized that when most evenings and weekends were spent in the shop, there was something here, it was a real business-in-the-making,” Holm said via email. “I was on a contract position and when the term came up, I decided to jump in with both feet into entrepreneurship and started Den Designs in memory of my late father, Dennis.” With her art being sold in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, Holm moved to the Yukon last October and is expanding her business to the territory. She has been working with a number of businesses and companies to share her art with the Yukon.

Yukon Brewing was a natural fit. “I have always been a fan of delicious beer and Yukon Brewing was one of the first places I visited when I moved to town last October,” Holm said. “I was greeted by John in the taproom that day, who happens to also be one of my very first, and loyal, Yukon Den Designs customers.” Yukon Brewing reached out about a collaboration to expand events at their new taproom that opened this summer and the Meet the Artist event was born. Holm’s art is personal because it uses her own photography and designs that are then transferred onto wood and installations. Photography has always been her passion, but the woodworking is the legacy from her father that empowers the work. “I have always loved photography and I grew up in a family cont’d on page 3 ...

that loved to capture memories and moments,” Holm said. “My images are taken along my travels and are typically landmark or scenic in nature, making it great for tourists and locals alike. “Woodworking was never in my repertoire, but when my dad gifted me his hand tools before passing, I felt the need and desire to put them to good use. I had seen this technique, wood transfer, done before, but I took it a step further by using different types of wood and my own homemade medium.” She’d like to think of her work as “rustic chic.” The naturally grained wood adds an aged vibe to the recent photography and creates its own identity. Holm’s beer-themed exhibit at the brewery on Nov. 7 is entitled “Thirsty” and will have pieces on display on the tap room walls and for sale during the evening. In honour of her father, Holm also commits 10 per cent from all Den Design sales to support cancer lodges in Western Canada and Yukon Brewing has partnered to share part of proceeds from drink sales that evening as well. Her work can be found at some of the upcoming Christmas craft fairs in Whitehorse and online at www.DenDesigns.ca.

he research is in. When women lead the way, companies, organizations, and communities all benefit. Study after study has concluded that having more female leaders in top positions is correlated with increased profitability and performance. When it comes to public office, there is evidence that having women in elected seats impacts the whole community–women and girls, but also boys and men. The reasons behind these benefits are many. Decades of research has pointed to the importance of encouraging and having a diversity of voices. Diversity makes people and organizations smarter, harder-working and more innovative. When it comes to solving problems, the greater the number of voices, the better the solutions. A review study looking at leadership traits found that women out-performed men on almost all of them, including taking initiative, building relationships, collaboration, motivating others and championing change. The importance of women in leadership roles, and the business case for this, is clear. If we want to strengthen our communities and advance the economy, we need more women leading the way. And yet, women are continually not represented in these roles and are less confident in their abilities to be leaders. What’s holding them back is not a lack of capability, but societal and individual barriers that we need to collectively bust through. In late November, Yukon’s first ever women’s leadership summit will take place with the aim of breaking down these barriers. With two days packed with opportunities for skills development, mentorship and confidence-building, the summit is all about supporting women across the North to

Leaders are entrepreneurs, students, volunteers, advocates, parents, executives and mentors. They solve challenging problems and they break barriers. They lead in business, government, communities and families. “One of the most import-

These sessions are built on recognizing that while money is the currency of modern life, for many women, it can be a source of anxiety, fear, or irritation. Women often charge less, work longer hours for lower pay and are frequently overburdened by conflicting role expectations between home and work. Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

the effervescent sweet/ sour beverage? Statistics say you likely have. This ancient fermented tea drink is now the fastest-growing market in North America and experts say it could be worth $3.5 billion by 2025. Summit Kombucha, Yukon’s first “booch” brewery has made a name for itself with its locally foraged northern flavours, including spruce tip and haskap. But what is it and how did it become so popular? Kombucha is thought to have originated in China, around 221 BC, during the Qin dynasty with an emperor at the throne who was obsessed with health and immortality. He even tried to find an elixir for eternal life. I’d like to think the closest he came to it was kombucha and that it’s no coincidence the stuff was known as the “tea of immortality.” Centuries later, Korean physician Dr. Kombu brought back this tea to Japan for Emperor Inkyo as a health tonic. This is where the name kombucha originated. Eventually, due to the

Nicole Schoeneberg (left) and Hilary Seymour (right), owners of Summit Kombucha, enjoying their blueberry and basil kombucha, at their brewery international tea trade, kombucha arrived in Europe in the early 20th century. There, it gained popularity in Russia (kambucha) and Germany (kombuchaschwamm). By then, booch had gone out of fashion in Asia and became a drink that your eccentric great-aunt brewed in her dank basement. This sentiment was reflected by my father, who laughed at me when I told him I was brewing my own. Eventually, mainly through word of mouth, the health benefits of booch came to light. Since the early 2000s, the market has exploded with brands offering dozens of creative flavours. Hilary Seymour and Nicole Schoeneberg, owners of Summit, started selling their homemade booch last year at the Fireweed Market and kept selling out. They have grown enough in one year to move into their own brewery on Titanium Way. They have refill stations at Riverside Grocery,

Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters and Baked. It’s also on tap at the Wayfarer Oyster House. Seymour thinks the resurgence in popularity is due to its health benefits, particularly where gut health is concerned. It’s a great way to support digestive health, she said. As for the taste, someone who has never tried booch might find it a shock to the system. It has a unique zine. Even Schoeneberg thought it was “pretty terrible and very vinegary”when she first tried it, but she’s come to love it. “Being at the Fireweed Market, where we started, was the best place to engage with people who never had booch before,” Schoeneberg said. “Having the opportunity to talk to locals and give out samples was effective. It wasn’t a hard sell after they tried it and they kept coming back!” In fact, Yukoners love it so much that Summit had to triple

production since last year’s market season. Now they brew around 35 gallons and host “make your own kombucha” classes, which typically sell out weeks in advance. Both Seymour and Schoeneberg said the local community has been supportive of Summit and Summit, in turn, likes to support local producers, harvesters and foragers. They use cucumbers from Yukon Garden and haskaps from Yukon Berry Farms. Moving forward, they hope to be bottling or canning by next summer and then moving slowly into markets in the Northwest Territories and Alaska. Summit is already in Atlin, at the Trading Post, but the most important factor for them is to maintain a connection to the North. Anne Huang–Power is a British expat, not a big fan of snow and is just trying to survive her first Yukon winter. So far, so good.

I soon saw that he just wanted to be near her though and had no intention of harming her. His favourite time was nursing time. When I had my daughter cradled in my arms and she was nursing, he would sneak into my lap and spoon her. She’d smile and reach her little chubby hand behind her and be reassured when she’d feel his fur. It was so fun and special to hold these two gingers in my arms. It was a big love fest, really. He would purr, she would smile and giggle, and I would think “this isn’t so bad!” The beginnings of parenthood Kanye, a most memorable farm cat weren’t easy for me and Kanye definitely heaped on the love for anye eased his way into our lives Maddie when my patience was in like a comfortable habit that’s short supply. hard to break. It did not take very long for Kanye to take advantage. After a while he could regularly be found in front of our wood stove; soaking up the heat. He was a very personable and friendly kitty, but retained his independent spirit, doing his rounds on the farm and never staying inside with us for longer than a couple of hours.

Getting on the Wrench

Series:

Full name: Age: Trade:

PROFILES

Current workplace:

Riley Hildebrand, Skills Canada Yukon alumni 25 Heavy equipment, truck and transport technician Yukon Energy

What motivated you to get into this career? As a kid, I always enjoyed taking things apart and figuring out what makes them “tick.” Finding ways to make them work better or perform different functions than originally intended. Turns out a career as a heavy equipment technician allows you to get paid to do just that.

Was there someone who got you excited about this path?

Riley gets to work all over with his trade

Riley’s day could involve crawling into a hydro turbine performing inspections

My dad has always been a huge inspiration. From handing him wrenches and holding the flashlight just right for him while working on his truck when I was just a little fella, he was the guy who really sparked my interest in becoming a mechanic.

Was there a class in secondary school that helped you be more proficient at the work you do now? I took mechanics class and sled ed as well as intro to trades at Vanier Secondary School with Mr. Tait. I was able to learn a lot from Russ and then apply those skills in a workplace environment during the intro to trades course. That’s when it kicked in that a career in trades was a perfect fit.

What was it like to go to post-secondary school and work at the same time? It was an amazing experience. I received a great amount of support from my employers and from Yukon Government’s Department of Education to enable me to get my Red Seal certification. That is one of the things that I don’t think enough young people today realize about the trades. The fact that you can be earning money all the way through earning your ticket gives you a real leg up. Whether you’re fresh out of high school or are looking into trades later in life, the apprenticeship program allows you to get your trade without breaking the bank. And with all the programs and great instructors at Yukon College, you don’t have to leave your family and home to get an education that leads to a rewarding career.

What is the best part of being in your trade? I really enjoy going home at the end of the day knowing I’ve put my skills to work, solved problems and, most importantly, kept the lights on!

What does a regular day look like for you in your job? A regular day? Never had one. That’s what I like about my job. One day I could be troubleshooting issues with a modern natural

gas engine and the next could involve crawling into a hydro turbine performing inspections. It puts all areas of my trade to the test and pushes me to become a better technician every day.

If you met someone who was looking at getting a job in the trades, what piece of advice would you give them? I would say that a career in the trades is by no means a “last resort.” It is a great career path with so many opportunities and a Red Seal certification in the trades can allow you to work all over the country and the world.

How has your trade made your life better? My trade finds its way into many aspects of my life outside of work. It’s given me a critical eye for why and how things work around me instead of things working “just because.” Plus it has taught me that getting mad at inanimate objects doesn’t help solve any problems.

What is the most interesting thing/project you have worked on? Being involved in the overhauls of the natural gas engines has been my favourite project so far. Tearing into a massive, high-tech, precision engine like that is just really darn cool.

Riley Hildebrand gets into some tight spots with his career as a heavy equipment, truck and transport technician

How’sBUSINESS

The Wayfarer has picked some eclectic items to create a special ambiance in the restaurant

A pearl formed in these oysters How’sBUSINESS

How’sBUSINESS by Amy Kenny

E

ven after a year of operating in downtown Whitehorse, How’sBUSINESS Eddie Rideout, co-owner of Wayfarer Oyster House, stresses that his restaurant does more than just oysters. Some people still associate the 6th Avenue eatery with its pop-up origins, when Rideout and co-owners Brian Ng and Andrew Seymour would show up at different bars around town to shuck platters of oysters under the Wayfarer name. But he may not have to remind people anymore. Word’s getting around, and not just around Whitehorse, but around Canada. In early October, The Globe and Mail named Ng one of Canada’s top chefs. In late October, Air Canada named Wayfarer the seventh best new restaurant in the country. “Perfectly shucked oysters are a given—preferably with a 2017 NK’MIP Chardonnay,” read the story in En Route, the airline’s magazine. “The daily menu and chalkboard offerings deliver on dishes of cold smoked bone marrow with a bright vinaigretteslicked tangle of leeks, parsley and celery; seared scallops and ginger scallion jam; or an elegant tagliatelle dressed with pesto, pistachios and asparagus.” “It’s very humbling,” said Rideout. “We didn’t get into any of this

for the accolades. We got into this because we were passionate about it. (The accolades) are validation because two of the three of us have left pretty lucrative government jobs to do this.” He said it also feels good to be recognized because Whitehorse is a small town that punches above its weight class. It’s nice to see other people taking notice of that. “It’s really cool to be recognized because it’s not like we’re a small country. It’s not like you’re driving across Canada in a day.” Rideout said it’s been a whirlwind year to get to this point. When Wayfarer opened in November of 2018, its owners were hopeful people would embrace the idea, but they weren’t sure how things would shake out. They were astounded, said Rideout, at how well the restaurant was immediately received. Wayfarer was packed on opening weekend. caption Diners were elbowto-elbow as they sampled the menu, which consists of rotating mains, roughly a dozen appetizers including mussels, marrow and roasted cauliflower, and a selection of local beer, cocktails and wines. It was a surprise, but one that was easier to get used to than the idea that, in order to grow, they

would have to let go a bit. “Before the restaurant, it was just us (Rideout, Ng and Seymour),” he said. “Wherever we went, it was just what we did. But we had to kind of take a step back a bit and ensure that we staffed up and trusted our team to kind of grow this restaurant. We were living it 24/7 as new business owners and eventually we had to kind of get the team trained and trust them.” Rideout said Wayfarer isn’t doing anything to celebrate its anniversary on November 2 or the national accolades, as excited as they are by the news. “We’re coming to the holiday season fairly soon so traffic will pick up,” said Rideout. “It’s business as usual. We’ll continue to make great food, to showcase the talent of Brian and his team and offer a different dining experience. Just keep hoping people show up and give us a try.”

Amy Kenny lives in Whitehorse. Among other things, she works as a copy editor for What’s Up Yukon. If she’s not inside writing, she’s outside running mountains.

6pm: Free Trip to Egypt Seeking to build a bridge of mutual understanding and friendship, a Canadian-Egyptian entrepreneur decides to reach out to the very people who fear him. Traveling across the U.S. to find Americans concerned about an Islamic threat, Tarek Mounib makes them an intriguing offer... What these Americans experience in Egypt is illuminating and occasionally very moving. In English and Arabic with English subtitles. Dir. Ingrid Serban, 2019, USA, 98 min. “There’s something of a “nice Borat” quality to this sweet-but-slight documentary. It confirms its premise that exposure vanquishes bigotry.” ~Liam Lacey, Original Cin 8:15pm: Pain and Glory This deeply personal work from one of the world’s foremost filmmakers is pure Almodóvar: inventive and irreverent, poignant and exhilarating. A filmmaker confronting the autumn of his life experiences a series of reencounters. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love, his early discovery of cinema, and the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films. Stars Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, who won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his performance. In Spanish with English subtitles. Dir. Grey Matters

Author’s son and granddaughter in the Climate Strike march

with Susan Clark

Turning seventy I

turned 70 this year. I’m pondering what this means. At 55 and 60, various senior discounts kicked in and it seemed kind of fun. At 65, there is no doubt that one officially becomes a senior with Old Age Security, Pharmacare, Homeowners and Pioneer Utility grants. But what about 70? A compulsory Driver’s Medical? Is that all? I think that becoming 70 deserves a special term of its own. Am I now an elder, a sage, a crone, or just an old woman? According to the dictionary, a “sage” is a person who has attained wisdom. Traditionally a “crone” was a disagreeable, sinister, witch-like old woman, but also an archetypal figure of a wise woman. An “elder,” according to the dictionary, is an older person valued for their wisdom and experience. In First Nations cultures, the term refers to a person who is recognized because they have earned the respect of their community through wisdom, harmony and balance of their actions and their teachings. They are asked to teach others about culture, tradition, and “being a human being” based upon their life experiences. An elder is also wise enough to lis-

ten to the youth and learn from them. They are our future. I want to be known as an “elder.” I want to pass on some of the wisdom I have gained from my life experiences and reflections. One of the most important things I have witnessed is the effect of the increasing population on our planet. Along with this is the effect of the increasing affluence in the world (not for everyone of course) on all the natural systems of this earth. And, of course, the biggest of all these is climate change. I live with the guilt of having had “it all.” I’ve always had enough of everything, especially options. Options in terms of where I live, what education I choose, what I eat, where I vacation, whether I drive a car or ride a bike, how many children I have, what work I do, and so on. I also had the opportunity to live and work in rural Bangladesh and Nepal, and to know people who had few or no options in any of these areas. For now, many of us in the Yukon continue to have these options, but the people I knew in Bangladesh, for example, have fewer and fewer options as a large part of their country is becoming no longer habitable with the rising sea levels. Climate change! What wisdom can I share as an “elder” in my culture with those growing up with climate change and making the decisions about the world? I don’t know if I can actually make a difference, but I can be faithful to some of my ideals

and values. I want to pass on a respect for the natural world that affirms doing no more damage to our fragile ecosystems. I want to minimize my use of those resources that are not renewable and will not last even for the life of my granddaughter, let alone for the generations after her. On a personal level, I try to teach my children and grandchild by example how to enjoy simple activities in the outdoors. We go for walks, hikes, bike rides and paddles, and talk about the plants and animals that we see. We, in the Yukon, are privileged to have so many of these activities right outside our doors. I try to live “locally” as much as possible, and grow some of my own food. My husband and I have replaced our lawn with raised beds to grow vegetables. We are transitioning to a mostly plant-based diet, both for health and to go easier on the planet. My generation has spread its families across the country and the globe. Air travel is a huge producer of greenhouse gases, so we have decided that our air travel miles will be only “medical miles” or “love miles” (to maintain important family relationships). We are trying to use electronic means to stay in touch with distant folks, whether it is for meetings or personal chats. Skype and other video calls work well. Taking the bus as often as possible reduces my use of the car. These are some examples of

what I, personally, am trying to do to pass on the lessons I have learned and am still learning. Collectively, we “elders” need to use our influence to demand that our leaders act on the major climate change-related issues. This is difficult for them. Some of the measures needed are unpopular and contested by the industries and people whose livelihoods come from the activities that are most involved in causing climate change. These people need to be aided to make the difficult transitions that will be necessary to adapt and mitigate. We have all

PHOTO: Susan Clark learned to live with a short-term view and now we see that we must take the long view. At age 70, in a culture focussed on individual fulfillment, I recognize that, in the long-term, sharing and cooperation is better than circling the wagons. Making hard changes is not only an individual action. It takes a community of support. I want to be part of that. Susan Clark is a retired Family Physician who has been living in Whitehorse for the last seven years and has three adult sons and one granddaughter.

Lawyered up and ready The Phil Dwyer Trio will be at the Yukon Arts Centre on Nov. 3 for a Jazz on the Wing concert by Ken Bolton Tenor sax player Phil Dwyer performing in Berlin. The Phil Dwyer Trio will be onstage at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, Nov. 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

ithout question, Phil Dwyer was the only first-year law student at the University of New Brunswick in 2014 sporting an Order of Canada pin in his lapel. Odds are strong he was also the only frosh who could claim a 30-year career as one of Canada’s most in-demand jazz musicians. Or that his other option for a mid-life career shift might have seen him in a chef’s apron, rather than a lawyer’s robes. By 2004, Dwyer had already earned his spurs as a sax player, pianist, composer and universitylevel teacher in Toronto, when he decided to move his family to his Vancouver Island home turf. For the next 10 years, he plied the freelancer’s trade from the mid-island town of Qualicum Beach, which involved extensive travel to gigs in Vancouver and elsewhere. By his mid-40s, “the wear and tear of being on the road, not eating that well, and becoming more and more concerned about my carbon footprint” had begun making that lifestyle less appealing. “I was looking 30 years down the road and asking myself if this was really what I wanted to be doing for another 30 years. The answer was a resounding no,” he admitted. “Although I hadn’t lost my love of playing music, the zest for doing it as a vocation had sort of dissipated.” As a passionate cook and gardener, Dwyer had occasionally entertained a “fleeting fantasy” of opening a restaurant. He had even established a summer music camp for high school students, which grew into what’s known as the Phil Dwyer Academy of Musical and Culinary Arts. “Originally, the camp was a make-work project for me when I moved back here to Qualicum, because I was looking for ways that I could stay at home and work, rather than spending all my time in airports and hotels,” he said. “So, I invented this school. There was no real need for another

summer music camp, but we did it quite differently, in that we ran the camp out of our house and we had a very low student-to-teacher ratio.” The culinary aspect arose from a realization that most of the music students had no idea how to rustle up their own grub and relied on fast food outlets to sustain themselves. “A lot of them didn’t know thing one about cooking, which was a big passion of mine,” Dwyer recalled. “I thought, well, I’m going to have this camp where we’ll do music in the morning and music in the afternoon, but over the lunch hour, I will teach the students how

to make different dishes.” Those dishes ran the gamut from homemade pasta to ceviche and beyond. (But not one of his own signature dishes, prawn and chanterelle risotto.) “We taught them how to roll sushi. We cooked pizzas on barbecues. I taught them how to make curry, how to make a proper omelette, how to make spaghetti sauce. We did teach them risotto, but it wasn’t chanterelle and shrimp,” he said. Still, when it came time to add another reed to his professional arsenal, Dwyer passed on the idea of opening a restaurant.

“The only other thing I ever seriously thought about doing was going into law,” he said. Despite not having an undergraduate degree, Dwyer did well on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and was accepted to the Fredericton law faculty at the age of 48. “UNB was a great fit, because it’s quite a small school and Maritimers being legendarily friendly, welcoming people, that was great. I lived in Fredericton for two years, got a great education and met lots of nice people.” Dwyer spent his student summers in Toronto, playing music

and doing legal work for social activist Peter Rosenthal, whom he describes as “quite an interesting fellow who likes to sue the Toronto Police Force.” After articling and passing the requisite bar exams, Dwyer is now a fully-fledged lawyer, still learning to juggle the demands of his new career with those of his side gig as a musician. “Being a freelancer, you get used to saying yes to everything, and then figuring out how you’re going to wedge it all into your schedule. But your schedule is pretty flexible, so you’re able to kind of make it work,” he said. “Now I have somewhere between 45 to 55 hours a week that are already spoken for. That’s been a bit of a hard adjustment to make, but I’m slowly figuring it out and getting back some equilibrium.” When Phil Dwyer, C.M., J.D. returns to the Yukon Arts Centre stage this week, it will be as a decorated and widely-respected jazz musician, not as a relatively new family lawyer. Joining him in the Phil Dwyer Trio will be two former students and long-time collaborators, bassist Conrad Good and drummer Joe Poole. Dwyer has performed in Whitehorse several times, but his appearance at the Jazz on the Wing concert on Sunday, Nov. 3 comes almost 30 years after he first came to the Yukon with singer Holly Cole to play the Frostbite Music Festival in 1990. “I remember my cousin (the late MLA Steve Cardiff) running around like a maniac, trying to keep the heat on in that airport hangar where the concert was held,” he recalled nostalgically.
