Ken admits that he feels out of sorts when his phone isn’t within reach

I

love my cellphone. Let me rephrase that. I am addicted to my cellphone. I’m enslaved by it. In its absence, I feel abandoned, disoriented, slightly less than a whole person. I’m not addicted to the same degree as many others I encounter on a daily basis, who walk into traffic with their faces glued to the screen, or gabble on their devices throughout every meal, even during in-person conversations. I have been known to go for up to half an hour at a stretch without checking what is happening in the world, or what the weather is like where it’s happening. I don’t even feel an emotional attachment to this phone in particular. To be honest, it’s a bit lar-

ger than I prefer – approximately the size and shape of one of the stone tablets Moses fetched down from the mountain. I’ve enjoyed other phones more, particularly the compact, flip-style ones with tiny screens and not much of a camera, but

with a sense of privacy when held to one’s ear. And a flip-phone has never accidentally pocket dialed a total stranger in Tokyo, right? Still, my current gadget takes excellent pictures, the screen is adequate for binge-watching Netflix movies, and I can summon up a keyboard large enough for my not-so-nimble thumbs when I feel like texting. Incidentally, it also makes and receives phone calls. So imagine my chagrin recently, when I returned from a day of running errands to discover my phone had not returned with me. I’m certainly not the only member of the What’s Up Yukon cont’d on page 3 ...

Something’s missing, but I don’t know what ... cont’d family who has had this experience, so you may relate to the sense of panic such a discovery unleashes. The mind goes places that defy reason. I knew I had used it in the outside world several times during the day, but that didn’t prevent me from turning the house inside out. I searched repeatedly in every place a cellphone could conceal itself: the piles of paper on my desk; the wastebasket; the laundry hamper; the fridge; the pockets of every garment I own. Behind, between and under the sofa cushions. When Herself got home from work, I enlisted her to call my number. Nothing. Even with my hearing aids at full torque. Not so remarkable, really, since I often forget to reactivate the ringer after attending a show, as I had done a few days previously. By that time, alas, most of the places I had visited during the day were closed. The next morning, I began systematically retracing my steps. No phone at the doctor’s office, or in the nearby lab. No phone at the gas station, the supermarket, the beer store, or several other places where I’d browsed. When the reunion finally took place, it was at my bank. Thank you, honest person who turned it in. I feel whole again. Our resident Geezer admits to being a bit of a scatterbrain southeast of Whitehorse.

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

Walking stick - what you see, but don’t see to be female. This is not the only insect that has these rather rare capabilities. Another most interesting feature about the walking stick is its capability to regrow a lost limb. If a bird swoops down and grabs the

walking stick by one of its legs, it can actually drop that leg off and then rebuild a replacement leg. Now things start to get more amazing. The female walking stick will lay about 150 small weed-like seed eggs. She drops them on the ground and the egg blends into its surroundings. Ants love these eggs and soon a bunch of walking stick eggs end up in the ant hill dining room. The ants will feed on the fats and nutrition part of the egg and then cast the rest off. The egg actually continues to develop. When the nymph hatches it simple works its way out the ant nest undisturbed. There are about 3000 different species of walking sticks and they are spread out over every continent in the world, with one exception: Antarctica. One such species of walking sticks hold the world record of being the largest insect of all insects in the world and that is up to 12 inches long. A closing thought to ponder: “The truth doesn’t hurt unless it ought to.”

PHOTO: Murray Martin

T

here is an old saying, “I can’t see for looking.” That could be very true when it comes to actually seeing a “walking stick.” The walking stick is a most interesting insect to study. Being from Ontario, where there are plenty of these insects, I had plenty of chances. It’s apparently not so common here in the Yukon and most people walking in the bush, or even in their own backyard, could be looking right at one of these insects, yet not actually seeing it. The reason for this is its unique camouflage that makes it look just like a twig. Unless the walking stick sways in a side to side pattern, its unique camouflage makes it fit right into part of the tree bark. This one to three inch insect has some amazing features built into it. First and foremost, it will not hurt you and is a herbivorous insect it eats plant life rather than other creatures, like the praying mantis does. Next is its amazing reproduction abilities. The female walking stick does not have to actually breed with a male species. It can reproduce by itself. The one catch here is that if it has not connected up with a male partner, all its eggs will turn out

Murray shares some information on the unique stick order of insects

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Time marches on, but backwards sometimes T

here’s a significant date that is fast approaching. No, I’m not talking about the election on Oct. 21, though that is an important date. A week or so later though, on Nov. 3, we’ll face the annual chore of adjusting to Standard Time. That inevitably causes a return to the discussion of why we continue to do this, and whether or not we should stop doing it. Here in the Yukon, setting our clocks back one hour is probably the most annoying part of the exercise. With wall clocks, it’s just a matter of turning the hands back-

wards. Analog watches are pretty easy to deal with in the same way, but it seems that every brand of digital watch has a different set of buttons that you have to push in a different set of sequences in order to get the desired result. Then there are all the appliances that have clocks as part of their make-up these days: stoves, microwaves, televisions and all of their accessories. I usually forget the date/time stamp on my cameras. If you’re like me, you probably make most of these alterations before you go to bed on the night before the change. All of your digital devices do it by themselves at 2 a.m. You probably noticed, when the British Columbia Premier, John Horgan, visited here recently, he raised the issue of ceasing this semi-annual ritual. He’s suggesting that British Columbia might go to permanent Daylight Savings Time, instead of going back and forth. He also mentioned that he’d like to see all of the west coast states, provinces and territories make the same move, in order to coordinate businesses and activities along the same longitude. This of course, is why we started

Looking west –that hill cuts an hour off an hour of direct sunlight every fall

PHOTOS: Dan Davidson to follow B.C. time in the first place. This same discussion has popped up in the Alberta legislature as well, no matter which party is in power. A good chunk of Saskatchewan already doesn’t bother to change from Central Standard Time. Given that Daylight Savings Time tends to provide more light in the evenings, I can see why provinces Outside might prefer that option. When I was discussing it on Facebook however, some farmers objected to that idea and said they would rather be on Standard Time for the sake of their animals. Of course, someone reminded me that here in the Yukon we are actually on double Daylight Savings Time in the summer. That’s been the case since 1973, when Dawson City and Old Crow finally made the switch that everyone else in the Yukon had made to Pacific Standard Time in 1966. In the central Yukon, changing the clocks doesn’t make a whole lot of difference. We tend to gain or lose about six minutes a day at the extreme ends of the cycle, so it only makes a noticeable differ-

ence for seven to 10 days. Where I live, on 7th Avenue in Dawson City, there’s a far more significant change that happens as the sun’s arc moves steadily to the southeast around this time of year. Looking west across the Yukon River, there are two hills with a bit of a dip between. The one to the south is taller, and as long as the sun’s arc is high enough for it to clear that hill, it also shines clearly from the valley between the hills, and over the second hill, which is shorter. Just during the last week or so, the sun’s path has become shallow enough, and the time it takes to get past that first hill long enough, that that is effectively when it disappears. We still have our long twilight after that, but direct sunlight is gone. So, from my point of view, the difference is mainly one about whether we have to change our clocks or not. “Falling back” in November is a lot

less of a nuisance than the “spring ahead” will be in early March. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

That’s not a trail, that’s a goat path Skiathos Trail Run challenges the legs and determination of competitors

The race has a short stretch amongst the steps and buildings of Skiathos Town

The race start and finish line was at the old harbour Bourtzi PHOTOS: Danny Macdonald

he Yukon River Trail Marathon is considered a grueling course that challenges competitors to overcome hills, grabbing roots, rough terrain and even a foot bridge, usually during August heat that can approach 30 C. Having finished that half-marathon in August as a training run for the Klondike Road Relay, I was certain of my ability to casually run and enjoy the 21-kilometre Skiathos Trail Race, taking photos and enjoying the morning. Reality, however, can be a jarring experience; because while the Yukon

River Trail Marathon is a tough course, the Skiathos race makes it look like an easy jog along the Millenium Trail. I would categorize it more of an adventure race. The course starts at the beautiful Bourtzi, a small Venetian-style fortress at the historic harbour that houses the Skiathos Maritime and Cultural Museum. The location means participants start and finish in front of the many tourist cafes and restaurants along the waterfront. It also means they get to run on old-style cobblestones. The course then goes north, quickly up some steps and into the maze of white-washed buildings that are Skiathos Town. The paved portion doesn’t last long as the town isn’t large. Runners are then directed down onto the beach for a short stint, running along the sand, dodging the waves and sunbathers along that narrow stretch. Runners are then directed back to a paved incline

The first big climb quickly moves off payment to a narrow steep trail

that turns into a path near the outskirts of town. The incline is steep and the path itself is made up of uneven rocks and loose scrag material, creating unsure footing. I lost count of the switchbacks criss-crossing the 300-metre ascent. I was forced to walk most of this, partially to conserve energy and also to ensure I didn’t lose my footing on wobbly legs. The forested hillside presents fantastic views along the west coast of the island from breaks in the foliage. There were small breaks of even ground, but these were shortlived and the trails seemed to go on forever. I had planned to rely on aid stations for water, which were thankfully handing out full bottles. The heat had risen to about 30 C by then and I carried a bottle with me from then on. (Big mistake not taking my own water bottle.) There was a small reprieve at the first of the four monasteries that the course tours, but the climb continued from there. The never-ending ascent eventually summits at a beautiful plateau of olive trees, with fantastic views of the mountainside. I was already looking at 45 minutes of time. The hill climb was like mul-

tiple versions of the steepest hills in Whitehorse, stacked atop each other, kilometre after kilometre. In addition, parts of the “trail” were a shin-deep groove, only wide enough for a single foot at a time. It was time-consuming to carefully place feet, particularly for fatigued legs. At this point of the trek, several groups of guided day hikers were making use of the trails to the north side of the island as well. They all helpfully moved aside on the narrow trails to let runners pass and even cheered us on. The trail became a rolling path. It was one of the more pleasant sections; up and down, but no horrific climbs. The views were excellent and often provided shade from the hot sun. This portion concluded at the second monastery, where they were checking runners. I was asked if I had seen anyone behind me, and was relieved to find that I wasn’t last (there were three runners behind me), though I was disheartened to learn this wasn’t halfway, but only about 7.5 kilometres into the course. The next portion became a cont’d on page 13 ...

My hopes of only downhill were dashed when the course again veered onto a trail that began climbing over the final hill that rested between me and Skiathos Town. I had hoped to skirt around it, but true to form, the course went over the top. The long climb arrived at the final monastery, where the surface became cobblestones. The sure footing on pavement provided an extended downhill run. I began to feel that the ease of paved running would guarantee a finish, but yet again, the path veered into the narrow, rocky trails leading downhill towards town. I could see Skiathos Town in the distance. I moved as quickly and safely as my wobbly legs could carry me. Along the back trails, farms with goats, donkeys and sheep whirred by and suddenly the trail emerged on the road. Cheers from the trail monitors encouraged me and I was told it was only 500 metres to the corner and then turn right towards the harbour. The road into the harbour was slightly downhill and I opened my stride as much as possible. As I recognized the landmarks, I knew that the finish was close at hand, and a quick glance at my watch showed that I would barely finish under the four hour deadline! A few runners were seated at benches and gave words of encouragement as I ran along the harbourfront. I could see that the race officials had already started dismantling the finish line and had dispersed, but I came across the line and felt massive satisfaction. The finishers’ medal and several bottles of water were a welcome reward. For more information on the Skiathos Trail Run, visit www.skiathosrun.gr/en/.

shaded creek bed heading downhill. There, I saw an opportunity to make up some time on a less strenuous portion of the course. This treacherous trail betrayed my brave plans, as the leaf-strewn ground hid the dangers of an uneven surface. There were also no fewer than five creek crossings (only one by bridge) with footing slick and uneven, so I almost slipped and fell a couple of times. Unable to speedily descend, I reconciled myself to safety over pace. At the bottom, a long multikilometre climb began again on a gravel road, devoid of any shelter from the sun. I had been finishing bottle after bottle of water from checkpoint to checkpoint in order to survive the heat. Near the top of this second grueling climb, I checked my time. “I’m not sure I’ll make the four-hour cutoff mark,” I thought as the two-and-a-half hour count passed on my wristwatch This climb brought runners to the third of the four monasteries and then a long run downhill on another gravel road, that was interspersed with rough cobblestones. Other than the paved bits, this portion proved the best on the entire course to open up and run freely on. The dirt road again began the third major climb, before shifting on to a path to navigate aroundseveral farms. Weariness was starting to set in and hill after hill seemed to blend together. As well, the pressing matter of time burned in my head as I feared failing to finish after traveling so far. The climb plateaued out and I met a checkpoint in a field where a boy told me the distance left was about five kilometres away. With just under 45 minutes to go, and hopefully only downhill, I hoped to

Hikes Fall Away

Courtney looking out over precipice

Smoky September at Spirit Canyon by Graydon Keenan

When the aspen and willow are sporting their rich reds and yellows, some of the most scenic landscapes can be found in our backyard and some of the trails are much more than a walk in the woods.

S

pirit Canyon is no exception. A friend and I went this smoky September. It’s an easy 1.5hour hike that has some incredible rock features, it’s close to town and it offers a large panoramic view of Ibex Valley. The turn off is on the Alaska Highway, 41 kms westbound past the north Klondike Highway. From there, turn right onto what’s called the Kluane Wagon Road. (Google struggled with the KWR, so resetting the odometer would be clutch.) cont’d on page 16 ...

Hikes fall away ... cont’d from page 15 You will see the KWR double back toward Whitehorse. The trailhead is just shy of two kilometres down the road, past the road leading to a private property. You will often see cars parked or tire marks, sometimes orange flagging. When we made it, we thought it looked like bush, but with hope and a heartbeat, we were on the main artery heading up the knoll. We saw some weird stuff, but they were just rocks. Once that was all cleared up, we came across a large grassy hill with a consistent grade, suitable for kids. I saw a wee bike stashed on the side about half way up. I guess some just want to send it. Along the way, large panoramic views opened to the Ibex Valley with the gorgeous Mt. Ingram

front and center. Further up long rock beds were above us, measuring more than 100 feet long, with multiple rows. Before you knew it, we had found a veritable “land before time.” Staring at a 150foot rock face that was almost completely vertical, the canyon cut up the hill and was almost bridged by the side you hike up on by these large rectangular monoliths. These massive, long, square cut rocks lean here and there like giant Lego pieces. The rocks host lush green organics and plants, photo-worthy from the micro to the macro. Spirit Canyon truly is one of a kind. For the explorers at heart, budget an hour or more to muck about the rocks so you can find all the nooks and crannies. All in all, we were back at the car in

2.5 hours, but we could have easily explored longer. The hike was easy, the views were wonderful, and the geological features were a blast to explore. Get out, get gains!

It was a beautifully coloured hike up to the grassy knoll 

6pm: Free Trip to Egypt Seeking to build a bridge of mutual understanding and friendship, a Canadian-Egyptian entrepreneur decides to reach out to the very people who fear him. Traveling across the U.S. to find Americans concerned about an Islamic threat, Tarek Mounib makes them an intriguing offer... What these Americans experience in Egypt is illuminating and occasionally very moving. In English and Arabic with English subtitles. Dir. Ingrid Serban, 2019, USA, 98 min. “There’s something of a “nice Borat” quality to this sweet-but-slight documentary. It confirms its premise that exposure vanquishes bigotry.” ~Liam Lacey, Original Cin 8:15pm: Pain and Glory This deeply personal work from one of the world’s foremost filmmakers is pure Almodóvar: inventive and irreverent, poignant and exhilarating. A filmmaker confronting the autumn of his life experiences a series of reencounters. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love, his early discovery of cinema, and the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films. Stars Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, who won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his performance. In Spanish with English subtitles. Dir. Pedro Almodóvar, 2019, Spain, 112 min. “A film to savour like a fine bourbon, watching how Salvador (and Almodóvar) wrestles with demons of the mind, heart and body.” ~Peter Howell, Toronto Star Tix: YAC Box Office + yukontickets.com YukonFilmSociety.com

The Joy of Northern Kleptoparasiticpredation Mythology #6

Ravens have a rivalry with seagulls

by Doug Sack

“This food fight … has been going on for at least 33 million years.”

T

here are two sides to every story, sometimes more. Entry-level journalism students are taught, ad nauseum, by wizened old editors to strive to present both, or all of these sides, to their readers in order to honour the elusive literary gold standard called “objectivity.” Of course, there is an opposing viewpoint which proclaims that objective journalism is an oxymoronic impossibility because human writers are subjective by nature and highly opinionated by job description. Therefore this crusty old wordcruncher was delighted to stumble upon a new one never encountered before, in a long career, which perfectly explains our current kerfuffle between the villain called Jonathan Livingston Seagull and the hero named Joe Ben Raven. Kleptoparasiticpredation: [a] (literally, parasitic predation by theft) is a form of feeding in which one animal takes prey or other food that was caught, collected, or otherwise prepared by another animal, including stored food. This food fight between ravens and gulls (“seagull” is a common but inaccurate nickname) has been going on for at least 33 million years. This is when the fossil record shows gulls coming onboard the evolutionary peace train. Ravens are considerably older, going back to the Theropod flying dinosaurs, which first appeared during the Carnian age of the late Triassic period 231.4 million years ago. That’s the first reason ravens don’t like gulls. They are evolutionary cheechakos, or newcomers. The second is that big word above, since both species are scavenger thieves of the first order, with near identical eating habits except more seafood for the web-footed gulls. Joe Ben Raven has a third reason, but puts it in more earthly terms for human comprehension. “Gulls are thieving airborne assholes who should have been wiped off the face of the Earth by evolution.” THAT is the Yukon perspective,

where ravens are idolized as the official territorial bird and the avian symbol of the great Canadian North including Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, which has honoured ravens as their municipal bird. However, the people of Arizona and Utah might disagree. The Mormon-founded state of Utah, home of the Great Salt Lake, made the seagull their state bird and erected a monument in Salt Lake City. The monument was named “The Miracle of the Gulls” for the gulls’ role in saving their ancestors from a plague of crickets by eating them. (The crickets, not the ancestors.) The nearby state of Arizona has an annual lottery to allow the shooting of 2,000 ravens by license, which resulted in 1,997 official raven deaths in 2018. That’s because they are considered vermin who attack, kill and eat newborn lambs. The unofficial number of annual raven deaths in Arizona by assassination and murder is unknown, but Joe Ben does not holiday or hunt in Tombstone, Tucson or anywhere else in America except Alaska. However, the ultimate insult to our noble and revered ravens comes from Birds of North America: “A group of ravens is called an ‘unkindness’ or ‘conspiracy,’ which seems fitting, since ravens are traditionally considered creepy; in fact, seeing many of them in one place can induce Hitchcockian-like flashbacks in even the least ornithophobic people with a fear of birds.” Really? Is that why it’s against the law in Texas to shoot seagulls, which are considered an endangered species along the southern border of the USA and the oily Gulf of Mexico? And, in Native American symbolism, the seagull represents a carefree attitude, versatility, and freedom, which is almost identical to how northern Indigenous people see the raven. When you consider seagulls can drink both fresh and saltwater, at least the Utah monument seems

with noted in the subject line

Doug notes that seagulls hold spiritual symbolism to Native Americans in the lower 48 United States to make sense whether they ate all the crickets or not. Could it really be that simple? Are gulls American and ravens Canadian? Joe Ben has reported raven elders spoke of a Great Bird War between the two species during the Klondike Gold Rush. “The gulls followed the mostly American stampeders over the mountain passes where the ravens were waiting to ambush them,” he said. “The humans were very close to having a war too, but they were fussing about the border between the two countries. We were fighting over the food they weighed and discarded at Sam Steele’s scales.” Nobody won, nobody lost. To this day, both ravens and gulls share the territory, although not equally. The gulls seem to take over Shipyards Park in the sum-

mers when the lakes and rivers are thawed, but it’s a different story come winter. The gulls fly back to saltwater and the ravens come back from summer bush camps to reclaim Shipyards and all the rolling Timbits therein. That’s the difference between locals and summer tourists in the world of birds. We implied in our last issue that Jonathon Livingston Seagull was the sole inspiration for this never-ending conflict with Joe Ben Raven, but that was a slight exaggeration. He’s just one bad bird who mused one bad book to inspire this sad state of avian affairs. The true cause of this venomous angst between these two competitive birds is the historical longevity of their mutual kleptoparasiticpredation, a wonderful word which so accurately describes why Jon and Joe will NEVER get along if they live for a million more years. Although the number keeps changing due to newer archeological discoveries in the Bluefish

PHOTOS: Pixabay Caves near Old Crow, it is now considered to be roughly 14,000 to 16,000 years since roving human mammoth hunters crossed Beringia from Siberia to become the first human inhabitants of the Yukon, Canada and arguably all of North America. When that number is crunched into the raven appearance estimate of 231.4 million years ago, the percentile of who was here first is 99.00004 per cent in favour of the raven. Versus the seagull which arrived 33 million years ago, the number is 86 per cent. Are there any further questions why Joe’s noble ravens are honoured as our official territorial bird and Jon’s screechy garbage dump gulls are not?

Idiomatic Origins with Josephine Holmes

Here’s mud in your eye …

Josephine explores the old saying getting mud in your eye

I

had cataract surgery; you know, where they pop out your lens and pop in a new and improved one. Out with the old, in with the new and all in a matter of minutes. The thought of a scalpel in my eye was a bit unnerving— heart-pounding, actually—as well it should be. After all, we’re not talking about a speck of dirt or even a bug in your eye. A scalpel. Merely the thought of anything in your eye is unnerving, right? Well, the surgery wasn’t all that bad. Didn’t feel a thing. And I wouldn’t be writing this, right now, without it, so for that I am grateful. Speaking of eyes, there’s a saying that always struck me as humorous or at least as lighthearted or well intended—”here’s mud in your eye.” But who says that anymore? I can’t recall when it was that I first heard the expression, but I do know that it was never said in my company. I imagine the modern equivalent of this expression to be a fist pump, perhaps a high five, or, as I have countered back, a high

thumb (so much easier on the hand). It’s a toast, like “Cheers!” or “Here’s to you!” But it doesn’t sound as friendly as these well wishes. After all, who wants mud in their eye and why would you wish that on anyone? The phrase is thought, perhaps, to have been bandied about by WWI soldiers, as they slogged in muddy trenches, but it is also thought, possibly, to be connected to horse racing, as thundering hooves kick up mud as they race. (Pity the unsuspecting horse-race enthusiast watching from the stands.) But, and perhaps more plausibly, others believe the phrase has a biblical origin … from the famous passage in John, chapter nine, where Jesus picked up some dirt, spat into it and then turned to the man who was born blind and said, “Here’s mud in your eye!” (I’m kidding, of course he didn’t say that.) In the biblical account, Jesus did spit into the dirt—with enough saliva to make mud—and then rubbed the mud on the man’s eyes. And, lo and behold, shortly thereafter, the blind

man could see. So, according to this possible origin, “Here’s mud in your eye” isn’t some unfortunate accident. It is, rather, a way of saying, “Cheers!” and “Here’s to your good health!” before sharing a toast with friends or family, one that is heard at family gatherings or during formal dinners, in a moment when conflicts are, if not forgotten, set aside and where camaraderie prevails. A moment when eyes meet and the punchy pat on the arm or the firm handshake are there in spirit, as glasses are raised—no matter the contents. Doesn’t matter. What matters is the spirit of the thing. So next time you are at such a gathering, why not raise your glass of cheer and wish your loved ones, friends and family, the best of health and happiness. Whatever you believe about the origin of this phrase, I take my leave with this parting wish for you: Here’s mud in your eye!
