he Yukon Film Society (YFS) aims to bring limited release theatrical films to local audiences every winter through its Available Light Cinema (ALC) series. On Aug. 26, the society will showcase the films Echo in the Canyon and Yesterday. According to artistic director Andrew Connors, another 39 film screenings are planned through the end of March, with more to add. “We’re looking for films that

are in theatrical release,” Connors said. “The August films have been lighter fare. We’re trying to bring in world perspective and then diversity.” The ALC series focuses on films that have moved past their film festival life and are limited in theatrical release. The YFS picks up films that would otherwise not see the screen in Yukon. Connors is looking forward to sharing several of this fall’s

films with Yukoners. In his role, he screens hundreds of films that are made available throughout the year. He also seeks out films to show, like he did on his trip to Hot Docs in Toronto, where he saw Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind. “These other films I saw those at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto,” he said. “Gordon Lightfoot went beyond a typical bio pic. It was really well done and entertaining and captured his dedication to his craft.” Connors noted that the society has a couple other films that might interest Yukon film buffs, including nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, Meeting Gorbachev and Last Black Man in San Francisco.

Silver screenings ... cont’d Connors said they considered bringing in nîpawistamâsowin as part of the Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) in the spring and inviting the director for a postscreening discussion, but the film has been in theatrical release for a while. (Normally, films curated for the ALFF are still in their film festival stage of release and haven’t seen larger theatrical release.) The film focuses on the failure of the colonial justice system in the prairies by looking at the Gerald Stanley trial that took place after the death of Colten Boushie, and would be an excellent focus for what the YFS film festival aims to provide as content. Meeting Gorbachev is a film that has been in theatrical release for a while and will move to digital soon. It is a documentary that focuses on the man responsible for ending the Cold War, based on interviews and news footage. Connors also said he’s looking forward to the response from audiences to the Sept. 16 film Last Black Man in San Francisco.

“(It’s) a neat piece of cinema that will resonate with some audiences and will turn others off,” Connors said. “It’s a poetic film about place and attachment to place; and about class and gentrification in San Francisco in particular.” Connors also thinks Toxic Beauty, showing Oct. 7, is important. The society is looking to bring in a guest speaker to lead a post-film discussion around the themes and topics. The film is about the lack of overall regulations in the personal care industry. It focuses on the class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and looks at the known carcinogens in women’s

HOTTER. JUICIER. TASTIER. THE CLASSICS. REMASTERED.

recently wrote about my new vocation as a DIY coffin maker. OK, strictly speaking it’s not a coffin. It’s a casket. On a draped bier. Thanks to the braintrust at Google, I now understand that a casket is rectangle-shaped, whereas a coffin is tapered at the head and foot. (The sort of vessel from which you might expect Bela Lugosi to emerge.) It’s only taken me 76 years to appreciate that distinction. I also learned the difference between a full-couch casket and the half-couch version. The latter has a hinged lid that allows mourners to view only the upper half of the dearly departed’s remains. Because my construction project is for a stage play, certain compromises have been necessary for purposes of practicality and theatrical illusion. For one thing, the box is slightly shorter than the standard 84-inch model, which is designed to accommodate almost anyone other than a deceased NBA player.

For another thing, the lid is not split exactly in half. The ratio is more like two-to-one because one actor has to conduct a certain amount of stage business on the lower portion, while another poor shmuck has to crouch inside the top portion throughout most of the play. Another critical design requirement is that this body containment device needs to appear solid while also including enough uncovered area for the poor shmuck’s voice to emerge clearly. Additionally, it has to contain enough ferrous material to drive a metal detector crazy. On top of everything else, the whole contraption must be easy to take apart and stuff into a van so that it can be schlepped from one venue to another if the play makes it onto next year’s Fringe Festival circuit. If this sounds a tad ridiculous to you, I agree. After all, I wrote the darned thing that put me in this (pardon the expression) box in the first place.

The biggest challenge, however, is not technical. It’s aesthetic. This is supposed to be the crappiest-looking casket ever seen. It says so right in the script. Problem is, while it’s fair to describe me as a mediocre carpenter at best (the term “wood butcher” seems appropriate) I also happen to be a bit of a perfectionist. When I’m staining and varnishing a lovely piece of pine trim, for example, I struggle to fight my natural instinct to avoid any globby drips or missed spots that would detract from the satiny finish. It may eventually require a sub-contractor to rough the thing up with chains, lace it with worm holes, gouge it liberally with a chisel and cover it with galvanized patches. Oh, how we must suffer for our Art! Our resident Geezer may be approaching the end southeast of Whitehorse.

Aussie Girl in the Yukon with Kylie Campbell

Friends discover Yukon

Part 2 of 2

Showing the delights of why we choose to live in the middle of nowhere

Day 2

We awoke to a ferry horn blaring its arrival into the port. We went to Glacial Smoothies & Espresso for a delicious breakfast burrito to fuel us for the drive back to Whitehorse. On our way, we made a second stop, this time at the Carcross Tagish First Nation building. Sam got to learn about First Nation history and culture from the informative reception. Our drive was mostly uneventful, though Sam saw his first black bear, thankfully from inside the car. We then went to Mount Lorne’s “Thrift Shop,” also known as the Mount Lorne dump. Sam actually found a little treasure of a Yukon firefighting jacket and was excited for his free souvenir. It was a beautiful day and we decided to head down to Annie Lake to shoot some guns at targets and clay pigeons. The drive there was beautiful and Sam was very excited to shoot

guns, that is, until he got too close to the scope and sliced his forehead open. Whoops. We should learn not to

injure the guests when visiting the Yukon. We stopped on our way home at Winterlong for some well-deserved flights of beer and bison pepperoni. After a while, only the red gashes with the giant, egg-like lump on Sam’s forehead reminded us he’d smacked himself in the head with a rifle.

We continued on our way home, taking a slight detour to Miles Canyon before eating at Klondike Rib and Salmon.

Day 3

The hot, sunny weather didn’t last and we awoke to rain. We decided to head to Winterlong’s fourth birthday party, where we were one of the last people to get a souvenir glass. In the rain, we stood drinking our summer beers, telling Sam “Welcome to the Yukon” as we glared at the weather. With our rainproof jackets, we decided to head to Schwatka Lake for Yukon Yamaha’s boat day. We got on a boat, life jackets in tow, and went for a rip around the lake. Despite the poor weather, it was quite fun. Back home, I made dinner out of two lake trout I caught a while ago and both were delicious. That’s what counted as a wild night Saturday night for the two of us, but Sam did have to be on a 6 a.m. flight back to China. Next visit: To be determined Which country: Does anyone have an idea? A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

A stroll along the Writers’ Block Jack London’s cabin (on the left) and the museum (on the right)

D

awson City would not be nearly as well-known as it is without the writings of three men who lived here for parts of their lives. This year we will once again be celebrating all of their lives and works with a stroll along the Writers’ Block, that portion of Eighth Avenue where they once lived. When Jack London lived in Dawson, he was mostly either in the north end of town, or at Father Judge’s Hospital. However, one of the cabins on Henderson Creek, in which he spent his winter trying to be a miner, now sits at Jack London Square. Actually, it’s half of the cabin. The other part has been relocated to Oakland, California, as part of the deal that Yukon journalist Dick North struck with the Americans who financed the 1964 expedition that located and authenticated it. Jack London Square now boasts the London Museum, created from North’s collection of London memorabilia, and run by the Klondike Visitors Association. (KVA.) It’s interpreted by North’s protégé,

Dawne Mitchell, along with her crew. Just up around the bend, on the high side of the avenue, is the cabin Robert Service rented (he did not build it) from Edna Clarke. There, he wrote his second collection of poems, Ballads of a

for him to return to. He didn’t, though some of his descendants have. The cabin is now owned and managed by Parks Canada. Daily interpretive programs take place there during the tourist season. Right across the street is the cabin where Pierre Berton lived

Berton House, seen from the viewing platform with the interpretive panels Cheechako, and his first novel, The Trail of ‘98. After Service left Dawson in 1912, Clarke kept the cabin, which was already beginning to attract visitors, vacant

Summer contest

the late John Gould. Gould was part of the group that persuaded Berton to buy back the house and land in 1989. Over the next seven years, the KVA helped to get the place back to a livable state. It also struck a committee I had the pleasure of

Robert Service’s cabin, where he lived from 1909 to 1912

for most of his pre-teen years, before his father lost his government job and the family moved to Victoria. Here, he was a school chum of my former next-door neighbour,

serving on, which, with the help of the Yukon Arts Council, devised a writer-in-residence program. That program launched in 1996 and has seen nearly 90 residents

PHOTOS: Dan Davidson since that time. It is now managed by the Writers’ Trust of Canada, with some assistance from the KVA and the Dawson Community Library. As it is a working home for whoever is there, the Authors on Eighth Walking Tour (held this year on August 15) is the only time the general public gets to take a peek inside. It’s the last stop on the tour that day and the place where the winners of the annual Authors on Eighth Writing Contest (covered here on June 19) are announced. I made up the term Writers’ Block as a pun back in the 1990s. Certainly these men were anything but blocked in their writing, but it caught on and is often used to refer to the three sites as a group. After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years. Please send comments about his stories to dawson@whatsupyukon.com.

P

ackaged hummus at the grocery store is expensive and full of preservatives. Instead of buying it there, make it at home and save yourself some money!

This version uses lots of lemon to keep it super fresh. It’s great for brown bag lunches. Make sure to serve it topped with lots of extra olive oil. Serves 4.

The Robert Service Way eagles have

returned to their old nest in the pull-out on the Yukon River

where the “Welcome to Whitehorse” sign is. There are three

babies this year, which is fantastic. It is fun to watch the reaction of tourists who stop here to get a photo with the sign when the realize that there is a full nest of bald eagles looking down at them. What an

YOU ROTATED YOUR TIRES?

Come and cheer on Yukon’s athletes with an intellectual disability!

SPECTATOR SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - FREE ADMISSION! Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin

A stew to go hunting for I

THE RIGHTS AND THE WRONGS OF COOKING WILD MEATS

f it’s worth going hunting for a big game treat, then it’s worth cooking that meat in the proper way. There is a big difference between cooking domestic meat and wild game. Let’s not spoil the gift of the hunt for a misfortune in the kitchen.

To get rid of the wild taste in big game meat, make sure you remove as much fat as possible, as well as any tissue. If you have wild meat frozen, thaw the meat slowly and completely. Moose meat can be very dry, so add about 1 lb of ground domestic beef to 2 lbs of moose meat. You might also secure a strip of beef fat to the roast. When travelling for Winchester Repeating Arms Company, I came upon many top wild meat cooks. Most suggested that when you plan to cook a steak or roast, you marinate the meat prior to cooking. There are many types of marinades, but for a quick and acceptable marinade, simply mix a cup of vegetable oil in a cup of red wine. Add some of your favourite spices to the marinade.

This is one stew recipe that I picked up more than 30 years ago. It has yet to be outshone by any other wild game stew I’ve made. Start by trimming away as much of the tissue as possible and then get into the kitchen …

DEER OR CARIBOU STEW

Ingredients 2 lb deer or caribou stewing meat cut in 2-inch cubes ½ cup all purpose flour ⅓ cup vegetable oil 1½ cups red wine 3 medium carrots, peeled and quartered 1 cup beef broth 3 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 cup sliced white onion 1 large yellow turnip, peeled and cubed 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 lb canned tomato 2 tsp salt 8 black peppercorns 2 garlic cloves, peeled and left whole 1 tsp dried rosemary Using a large, shallow mixing bowl, combine the wild meat with next 8 ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 to 8 hours. Drain the meat, reserving marinade. Cover meat with flour in shallow baking pan. She said she’d encourage anyone to experiment and give it a shot because it’s free. Next up, fans can expect the 22nd instalment of Lee Baker’s series, Vinnie the Vegetarian Vulture, to be completed by September and ready for purchase this Christmas. In the meantime, Lee Baker will be the featured writer at the Stony Plain Library in Alberta during Culture Days this fall. Toni Tanager and more in Lee Baker’s series can be found on the shelf of Mac’s Fireweed Books, or purchased online at Amazon.com. They can also be found in the communities, at the Faro Art Gallery, during the Christmas Tea in Faro and Ross River, and at the Yukon Public Library. When Carrie Boles is not submerged in dystopian novels, she very much enjoys the spirit and idealism found in children’s literature.

A contemporary Yukon storyteller John Firth launches his latest book by Pat McKenna

H

is latest book includes the signature of a ghost. He has competed in the only two Dyea to Dawson races, in both 1997 and 1998. He has written six books, including the recentlyreleased Caribou Hotel. He grew up in the Yukon with famous family figureheads nourishing his imagination and fostering his love of Yukon history. He continues to embrace the North in wilderness adventures of his own. John Firth is our own contemporary Yukon storyteller. Firth’s books profile a wide variety of subject matter. River Times–Racing the Ghosts of the Klondike Rush, weaves together the events of 1898, including the story-within-a-story literary romance of his T.A. Firth grandparents, and succeeds masterfully in paralleling the sweaty Dyea to Dawson athletes with the stampeders of old. Firth also profiled the one and only Jamaican dog sled entry in the 2009 Yukon Quest, “One Mush,” and supported Ramesh Ferris in his “Better than a Cure” journey, when Ferris hand-cycled 7,000 kilometres across Canada. In early 1990, Firth wrote the book that would go on to become an iconic telling of the famous dog race, Yukon Challenge.

Firth was a contributing writer for Whitehorse: An Illustrated Guide, published in 2013. With encouragement from George Arcand and the Yukon Sports Federation, he also wrote 2014’s An Encyclopedia of Yukon Sport. It is the one and only compendium of our territory’s collective athletic achievements. Firth credits Kathy Jones-Gates as the researcher who delivered the goods when he needed the details. Firth said that when writing, he is constantly surprised by what he learns–from the connections of people and places, from unusual stories told by the most unexpected sources and from the memories of old-timers who won’t be with us much longer. Firth captures the experiences of ordinary and extraordinary individuals and creates interesting, humorous and sometimes haunting stories. Caribou Hotel, Hauntings, Hospitality, a Hunter and the Parrot was launched at a special event earlier this month. When not paddling, hiking, or cooking over a one-burner camp stove, Pat McKenna is an avid reader of old time Yukon stories.
