Submitted by Steve Wilson Driving to the fish ladder, I noticed something orange out of the corner of my eye. There was a mother fox with her 7 babies (kits) sitting on a driveway. They were everywhere! It looked like they were living in somebody’s yard. I ended up walking across the street to where they were hanging out, but had to work at getting their attention; they had no real interest in me.

DOG CULTURE Lulu may be the smallest dog in the Yukon, but she is all Yukon. At a whopping five pounds, deaf and toothless, her bark is literally worse than her bite! We recently had some added excitement on our evening walk when we encountered a fox coming up our driveway as we were leaving. When Lulu saw the fox, it was go time! As we got closer, the fox wandered down the street and up the next driveway.

Larry loops us into a few tips to make your moose camp run a little smoother this season
F
oul weather can wreck more than your mood when you’re out camping and hunting moose. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips and tricks that can make a huge difference in the case of unexpected events. It’s never wrong to make the meat rack in advance. It might be midnight in the rain when you get back with the meat and keeping it dry is important. Make your meat hanging ropes before you head out. Take lengths of sturdy rope (in three, six and seven metre lengths) and tie a loop in one end of each. Use the loop end form another loop around the shank of the quarter, or the knot in the meat bag. One person lifts the bag to hanging level, and the other person wraps the loose end of the rope around the hanging pole at least twice. This wrap creates friction, which holds the bag while you knot the rope. It also keeps the knot from tightening. Put a loop of shock cord on all the tent loops and some tarp grommets so, in the wind, the stress is taken by the elastic cord
rather than the pegs or fastening point. When you put up a tarp or fly to collect water, tie a light cord to a lowered corner and tie it to a bucket under the corner. Put your axe or a clean stone in the bucket to hold it down until it gets water in it. Sew a loop into the centre of your rain tarps on the “up” side. Then tie that off to an overhead branch or line, so you then have a high point in the center of the tarp to drain off the rain. Tents and tarps should be placed upwind of the firepit to avoid burning holes in the fabric. Tarps over the fire area can be sloped upwards towards the front to allow the smoke to escape. The weather (especially winds) can change overnight, resulting in a hole in the boat, or the boat sitting on the bottom of the body of water the next morning. The boat can be pulled further out of the water if you gather wet sticks (beaver logs are ideal) and slide the boat right out of the water on them. The boat should always be
PHOTO: Pixabay tied with two ropes, one from the bow and at least one other on the windward side. I have had great success tying the boat with the bow facing out and the stern on wet wood (floorboards) onshore and one longer rope in each direction out from the bow ring. Of course, sleeping with one eye open and your headlamp available is always a good idea where the boat is tied up on an unprotected shore. Materials to start the fire, whether commercial or selfmade, should always be on hand, both in the boat and at the campsite. He is a past president of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and a retired huntereducation coordinator for the Government of Yukon. Please send comments about his articles to wild@whatsupyukon.com.

Richard’s Tire Tips
When is the best time
TO CHECK YOUR TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE?
Taking the Pulse A Health and Wellness Conversation
The Independent Expert Panel leading the comprehensive review of Yukon’s health and social programs has developed a new four-question survey. Please share your thoughts. They will inform the panel’s recommendations to improve the territory’s health and social programs and services.
For a paper copy of the survey, call 867-667-8205 or email healthreview@gov.yk.ca.
Find the survey online at engageyukon.ca
Inflation pressures should always be checked cold. The temperature of your tires has a direct impact on the pressure, the higher the temperature the higher the pressure and vice versa the lower the temperature the lower the pressure. Therefore they should always be checked and adjusted when cold, either first thing in the morning or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours.

Wild Game Recipes with Sydney Keddy
Moose and corn turnovers
A
nyone who hunts knows that when you harvest an animal you’re always going to end up with a ton of ground meat. These turnovers are great with any sort of ground and make a fantastic snack to have with a few cocktails, or even a light, quick lunch. They also freeze really well after they’ve been baked, so if you happen to have a bunch of time on your hands, stock up the freezer for those last minute get-togethers. If you’re in a rush, feel free to use store-bought pie dough, or even sheets of puff pastry. Both work exceptionally well in this recipe. Makes 24 turnovers

Eye on the Outdoors with Murray Martin
Nature versus hunting
Deer hunting recipes With hunting season once again upon us, it’s time to attempt to read those hurried, scribbled-down notes of some great wild-game recipes that I have received from many of the big-game hunters I have met, or hunted with, over the years. The following recipes are ones I have enjoyed. For starters, I suggest you remove as much tissue and fat, as possible, from the meat to get rid of that “gamey” taste.
the Hungarian partridge huddles in a covey, a small group of birds, deep down in the snow. The wind blows a cover of snow over the covey and the moisture in the air creates an ice roof, trapping the covey under the snow and their ultimate death. A 1938 dinner menu from the S.S. Prince Charles for a sophisticated foodie
“B
ack in those days, ‘20s and ‘30s was known as the Golden Age of Tourism. It was a pretty busy time! I have lots of old maps from that era. Fold-out maps to show the layout of the boats,” Sid tells me on this very smoky day in Beaver Creek, Yukon. He brings out a colourful piece of folded paper. Writing in the top left corner says Canadian National System. Throughout the 1930s, the Canadian National System consisted of the Canadian National Railway, steamships, hotels and telegraphs. “I found this back in the 1960s around Koidern. It’s a menu!” Sid enthusiastically passes me the piece of paper. The dull typed text describes the daily meals that would have been served to travellers on the S.S. Prince Charles, dated 1938. I ask Sid if S.S. would
mean it’s a ship, rather than the railway. “Yes, S.S. stands for steamship, like the S.S. Klondike.” I ask if he had ever heard of the S.S. Prince Charles travelling near Lake Atlin, British Columbia, as the paper read. “No, I haven’t. There was a ship from Atlin Lake called the Tarahne Steamship. It’s still there, sitting along the banks in Atlin. It’s right near the water. But there were lots of ships back in those days. So many I can’t think of all their names. I know the Tutshi was in Carcross, but that burned up. The S.S. Klondike and Keno are all that’s left from those days.” After doing a bit of research to try to discover whatever happened to the S.S. Prince Charles, I discover that it was created in 1935 and was under control by the Canadian National Railways
until it became a Union Ship and renamed the Camosun II. I ask Sid if the Canadian National System operates anymore. “I don’t think they run the boats anymore. Not even that much railroad anymore either. There used to be trains to everywhere. And boats were the main transportation before the railways or the highways.” “Some of these trips would include rail as well. People would take a boat to Skagway and rail to Whitehorse and a river boat up to Dawson. These trips had prices for a 30-day trip or a 40-day trip.” Because this particular menu was printed for a voyage on Tuesday, August 23 in 1938, I ask Sid if the Dirty Thirties, more commonly known as the Great Depression, would have affected voyagers, especially with the Second World War about to begin. “Not everyone was poor or affected by the Depression. Some people were still able to travel. People would catch a boat to travel days to get to a place with their big trunks.” “It’s a pretty exotic menu. These people knew how to eat fancy!” A few items on the menu include red cherry cocktail, curled celery and mixed olives, crème Victoria and poached red spring salmon, and leg of veal with currant jelly. With smoke in the Beaver Creek air and a growling stomach, Sid starts to boil water for his mac and cheese. Bon appétit!

The Yukon Fish and Game Association’s Youth Outdoor Education Camp took place June 22 to 28 by Danny Macdonald
I 2019 Yukon Fish and Game Association Youth Outdoor Education Camp participants (back, left) Erin King, Maddison Cave, Sofia Lang, Maeve McDowell, Greta Gladwin, Ayla McDonald, Jaxon Stockley, Breanna, (front, left) Seth SheardownWaugh, Jacob Nickel, Gebz Argao and Gallagher D’Abramo took canoeing lessons on Pine Lake during the week
Participants took full advantage of the Yukon wilderness and reconnected during the weeklong camp

Bushcraft and survival skills were part of the training during the week
Youth learned about the traditional Yukon trapping industry and took lessons in skinning a pelt
n an increasingly digital and wired world, the annual Yukon Fish and Game Association (YFGA) camp for Yukon youth is an opportunity to unplug from phones and games, experience the land and reconnect with the natural world. “It really is to make sure kids have a chance to get outside,” said Will Shewen, this year’s instructor. “If any time was a time to get them outside, now’s the time to push more kids into the outdoors.” This year, the youth outdoor camp, which has been held annually since 1988, was permitted by the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations on their traditional territory at Champagne. According to Shewen, himself a YFGA Youth Outdoor Education Camp alumnus, the camp helps participants cultivate an appreciation for the Yukon wilderness and harvesting practices, leaving a legacy of responsible stewardship and positive memories, It had a big impact on Shewen when he attended as a youth. This summer, when there was uncertainty around who would manage the cmap, it was an opportunity to give back. Shewen noted that a long list of Yukoners, including Russ Tait, Clayton White, Dennis Zimmerman and Kelly Hougen have all volunteered to lead the camp over the years. Shewen couldn’t let their groundwork disappear. “This year it was looking like it might die, and I didn’t want to let that happen,” he said. “It’s really a chance to get the next generation of kids out on the land.” The busy camp schedule exposes youth to most outdoor harvest activities, including hunting, fishing and trapping. Over the week, youth participate in workshops hosted by conservation officers, First Nations elders, hunters and guides. But the whole thing begins with a big Sunday, or Hike Day, as it’s known. “The first day, they hike up Paint Mountain,” Shewen said. “The sheet the kids fill out at the end says that the hike is the least favourite thing. But they all remember it.” Thrown into the wilderness with an exhausting hike is just the start for the action-filled week. Monday features a bushcraft workshop where the youth learn survival skills in the woods and how to make shelters. They also get a fishing demo and learn live catch and release practices. The middle of the week brings trapping lessons, including les-
sons on laying traps and how to skin pelts, as well as paddling and canoeing lessons on the lake, and HEED (Hunters Education and Ethics Development) training. The highlight of the week, though, is always safe firearms training at the local shooting range, using a variety of hunting rifles. Every evening, the camp ends with a campfire discussion around the different lessons that have been learned during the day, and the whole experience during the week. The campfire discussions really show where the program changes and impacts youth. “It’s funny because in the beginning they’re excited, but nervous because they’re not used to it,” said Shewen. “The first night there’s that thousand-yard stare with no flashing lights or focus. “Kelly (Hougen) did the first night and later came back. But over the course of the week, they come out of their shells and get comfortable … and actively choosing their activities and what they want to do.” Shewen also noted that the camp is for everyone, not just youth who come from “outdoorsy” families. That mix can lead to a great opportunity to help everyone understand the different ideas around Yukon harvesting practices. “You get kids from families who don’t hunt,” Shewen said. “It’s an interesting mix with kids who shot a moose last fall and someone who’s never fished. “But it’s all about respect for wildlife, respect for the resource and using the resource. Kids who might not do it, but they can learn appreciation for those who do.” The camp usually fills up by the beginning of May each summer and is limited to 12 to 16 participants annually, who are YFGA members. While the numbers are limited, participants are able to attend free of charge due to the fundraising efforts of the YFGA. The annual YFGA raffle provides the majority of funding towards the camp. For more information on the YFGA Youth Outdoor Education Camp, visit the website at YukonFGA.ca.
