Tombstone Territorial Park’s iconic views and mountains draw visitors every year to the interpretive centre on the Dempster
A
seven-hour drive north of Whitehorse, or one hour and 30 minutes north from Dawson City, the Tombstone Interpretive Centre sits as the gateway to one of the Yukon’s most iconic territorial parks. The views along the hiking trails serve as the backdrop for countless social media posts from visitors and Yukoners alike. But the natural beauty isn’t the only draw, as the centre hosts a summer series of events designed to add additional experiences for visitors. One of these is the Parks Day Hike and Potluck schedule for July 20. The annual summer series started in 1999. It was the product of the enthusiasm of interpreters at the Dempster Interpretive Center. The first event, called Weekend on the Wing, was a celebration of the avian residents in the region. “The immediate success of Weekend on the Wing inspired the interpreters to revisit this event annually and to host other natural history weekends based on this model,” said Tombstone Inter-
pretive staff. “In 2004, the first geology weekends (Weekend on the Rocks) drew people from all over the Yukon. In 2007, Botany Weekend premiered. Since then, Insect Weekend, Lichen and Fungi Weekend, and Mammals Weekend have also been added to the list of events.” These natural history events occur over four or five weekends throughout the summer, each with a distinct focus. Weekends that focus on avian species, plant life

and geology have become recurring annual events. Other variations occur depending on the way the summer plays out. The events series was proposed by the Friends of Dempster Country Society to build an understanding and appreciation of the unique northern wilderness along the Dempster Highway. “These events will feature presentations, workshops, discussions, games and hikes with scientists, local experts, researchers and artists,” said staff. “The Dempster Highway provides an exceptional opportunity to learn from, and about, northern boreal, subarctic tundra, alpine and Beringian environments.” The events are well-attended for a location as isolated as Tombstone. According to staff, between 10 and 30 people attend hikes. Between 30 and 70 attend talks. Anywhere from five to fifteen attend the artist workshops. Each event includes two to three hikes, a presentation cont’d on page 3 ...

What’s Inside Tombstone Park Summer Events .......................... 2
Natural History Special Events Series adds new experiences and knowledge for visitors to enjoy at Tombstone Territorial Park, including events focused on botany, lichen and fungi and one artist workshop. While the Parks Day Hike and Potluck happens on July 20, and this year’s Weekend on the Wing and Botany Days have already passed, it doesn’t mean visitors have missed all the events on the Tombstone calendar. Lichen and Fungi Weekend takes place Aug. 2 to 4, Weekend on the Rocks takes place Aug. 23 to 25, and a Fall Colours Coffee House will be hosted Sept. 7. Visitors can experience locals and scientists sharing facts and stories, learn more about training opportunities for tour guides and park rangers, and find out about some of the progress being made around northern research and traditional knowledge in Dempster Country. For more information, contact the centre at TombstoneCentre@gmail.com.

re you into history and/or walking? Maybe you prefer history and exploring beautiful places, but not walking? Either way, I’ve got you covered. If you’ve never been, Canyon City is a must. Nestled within Whitehorse city limits, this ghost town is not only a beautiful place to explore, but also a Yukon Heritage Site. The once populous Canyon City grew out of the danger presented by the Whitehorse rapids. Gold rushers had to stop over and plot surviving the next step on their way to the gold fields. Though the town boasted a hotel, saloon, stables and more, no buildings remain, but you can still tell the general layout of the town from the shape of the earth that’s been dug up and moved around. How to get there? The options are endless. I like parking on the Chadburn side of the canyon, as the parking lot is far less packed than the main Miles Canyon parking area. To get to this trailhead from downtown, drive into Riverdale. When you come to the traffic circle by Super A, exit right onto Nisutlin Drive and

Can you get to Canyon from here? ... cont’d Map from the trailhead in the Chadburn Road access point
Horse-drawn tram car used to transport supplies follow the road until you can see the fish ladder. Just before the fish ladder building, turn left onto Chadburn Lake Road and follow it
past the Schwatka Lake day use area. Past that, you will find a dirt parking lot on your right with a large trailhead sign. As seen on the trailhead map, the cross country ski trails loop all around the area. This can look a little confusing, but they are wide, easy-to-follow trails that are fairly
well marked by coloured signs on the trees. There are side trails, but they are far less developed. If you are nervous about getting lost, stick to the wider ski trails and you’ll be just fine. If you’ve never been to the area before, take a picture of the map before you head into the woods. This will ensure you always have an idea of where you are. I followed the red skiing sasquatch-looking signs until I hit the Upper Canyon trail on the water’s edge. This trail is a fairly direct route to the historic site and, while in the forest, it stays close to the road for the most part. When you come out of the forested trail approaching the river, turn left on the Upper Canyon trail. When you get to this point you’re almost at Canyon City. Follow the trail along the water for a few more minutes until you reach a signpost welcoming you to the Canyon City Townsite. For a longer, more scenic route, start out on red ski trail from the parking area, then take your first opportunity to jump on the yellow trail to your right. This path will meander towards the Miles Canyon suspension bridge. From there, you can choose either the Upper or Lower Canyon trails to make your way to the city. Don’t feel like hiking, but still want to check out Canyon City? No problem. About two kilometres down the trailhead parking along Chadburn Lake Road is a small pullout. There is a rod with a red tip sticking out of the ground, which I used as a trail marker,
PHOTO: Upper lower case though a nearby green portapotty is easier to spot. There isn’t much room for parking here, but a couple cars will fit on the side of the road. Follow the trail in front of you down a semi-steep path. A few minutes later, as you approach the river, look to your right to see Canyon City.

Richard’s Tire Tips
Are you running all-season tires year round? If so, you may be compromising your safety as well as those around you! Most all-season tires stop gripping normally at 5 degrees Celsius, whereas a designated winter tire continues to grip into the cold. Don’t let the term all-season fool you, these tires are designed for wet/dry traction and are not meant to operate in the winter. If you are not sure if you have a winter or all-season tire you can look at the sidewall of your tire and try to find a pictograph which is the government designation for winter tires, these tires have passed the testing that is required to be classed as a winter tire!
This pictograph is a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake in the middle and is the only way a tire can be classed as winter.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10
hough always a popular spot with locals and tourists alike, the basalt columns of Miles Canyon received more than 450 visitors over the weekend of July 5 and 6 for the Created at the Canyon art exhibit. Hosted by the Yukon Conservation Society, Created at the Canyon is an outdoor, interactive art event that celebrates local nature and history with the help of six Yukon artists working through various mediums. Traversing trails that have been in use for thousands of years, visitors this past weekend were treated to six exhibits spread out along the river at various stations. There, local artists created their works in real time while chatting with passersby. The various mediums employed ran the gamut from acrylic and watercolour painting to beadwork, music and dance. The troupe Borealis Soul carried a whole living room furniture set throughout the canyon in order to film a video over the course of the weekend. “This experience was inspiring,” said Dixie Smeeton, a visual and textile artist who lives in Haines Junction. “The scenery was incredible and the company was great.” Smeeton’s creation was a piece of wall art with beadwork and various natural elements found in Miles Canyon. “I have a salmon in the centre of my piece to highlight our current state of salmon stocks in the Yukon/west coast rivers,” she said. “This piece will be shadow boxed and sewn on smoke tan hide.” Smeeton, like most of the
artists, is not yet finished her piece; she intends to continue work on it over the next month. Due to the windy and dusty conditions, some artists found creating their works in an outdoor environment to be an unusual, though welcome, challenge. Cathy Routledge, a local watercolour artist, was one. She completed a small piece that she intends to rework in the studio, but she still found the experience exciting and engaging. “It’s always a great experience to do art with other artists outside. It might be a bit of a surprise what I actually come up with in the end,” she said. “There were so many people, so that’s tremendous. It’s such a popular spot for local people anyway. It’s really great to see that there are so many people accessing that place. It’s such a cool project, and a great partnership with the Conservation Society. “ Weather aside, working outdoors in a public, populous space was a novel experience for acrylic artist Chantel Goodman. “It was really exciting to be doing public art because painting is usually such a solitary activity, so it was nice to have community conversations with local people and with tourists from all over the world, too,” she said. “I talked to people from Whitehorse, from Switzerland, the States, Germany, all over the place.” Goodman’s painting depicts the mouth of the canyon, the basalt cliffs and the peninsula—all iconic Yukon imagery. However, she chose this particular vista while thinking of all the various groups of people
Diverse work comes out of a varied landscape by Willow Gamberg with very different histories who have passed through this area over the last century. “I picked that spot because I was thinking about how the space was used previously by first nations people, by gold rushers, and how it’s used now, with recreational enthusiasts and tourists and locals.” The sense of community mentioned by artists and attendees alike pays tribute to the importance of Miles Canyon in Yukon culture, as well as to the unique and inspiring nature of this annual event. “[Created at the Canyon] was fun, it was community-oriented, engaging, inspiring,” Goodman concluded. “I encourage anybody interested in art to apply for the event next year. It was such a great opportunity to do art in a public space with an audience.” The artists will complete their pieces over the next few weeks. The finished artwork will all be displayed in an exhibit from Aug. 1 to 31 at the Community Gallery in the Yukon Arts Centre. There will be a launch party on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in the celebration of our rich local history and talented community artists.
Willow Gamberg is a traveling music writer and editor who has returned home to Whitehorse after attending university in Vancouver and exploring the world. Contact her via editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy
Toasted sesame peanut noodles
N
oodle salads are a staple for brown bag lunches, picnics and day hikes. This fast vegan dish is simple and filling and stays in its prime for days, making it ideal for those long hikes. The dressing may feel a bit stiff initially, but once it sits, the vegetables loosen up. Making the vegan version of this dish allows it to keep for a couple
days. If you’re thinking of adding meat elements, make sure to keep it on ice. Serves 4

A Northwest Passage to the sea
The Northwest Passage Project will navigate the Arctic ice floes PHOTOS: courtesy of Northwest Passage Project
World’s first interactive live broadcasts from the Northwest Passage are happening now __ July 18 to August 4 __ Facebook Live Broadcasts: Sat. July 20 - 5 p.m. EDT | Thurs. July 25 - 7 p.m. EDT | Tues. July 30 - 7 p.m. EDT
by Michael Bramadat-Willcock The allure of the elusive Northern route was immortalized by the Canadian folk musician Stan Rogers, and his musical tribute to the famed northern gateway became a classic. “Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage To find the hand of Franklin reaching f or the Beaufort Sea Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage and make a Northwest Passage to the sea” – Stan Rogers Rogers passed away in 1983 at the young age of 33 in the American State of Kentucky, without ever travelling the route. Today his dream comes closer to reality.
(Ed. Note: The following article was first written for the Northwest Passage Project excursion to take place last summer from August 23 to September 13 aboard the R/V Akademik Ioffe. Shortly after departure, the expedition was grounded on the western Gulf of Boothia in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and cancelled. WUY did not print the article and has updated it to reflect this year’s attempt.)
T
he quest for a sea route through the Arctic between the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans has long captivated the minds of Canadians. This month, the world once again looks to the North as an intrepid group of scientists, filmmakers and students produce the world’s first live, interactive broadcasts from the Arctic Ocean’s Northwest Passage. The group is conducting research aboard the Swedish Icebreaker Oden. The project gives us a glimpse of the Arctic Ocean in real-time as the explorers discuss their research through live, interactive broadcasts. The threeweek expedition began August 23 and will continue until September 13, and public events are streaming through Facebook Live. “This is really the first time
that anything like this has ever been done. And for good reason, because up until recent years it was completely iced over for most of the year,” said Gail Scowcroft, associate director of the Inner Space Center at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. “This project really brings together, for me, everything that I’m passionate about. It’s climate change research, it’s education of the next generation of scientists, and it engages the public to help them understand the science and what’s truly happening.” The expedition team has planned 36 broadcasts to museums and science-centre partners, as well as three public Facebook Live events. “We are broadcasting on days where we will have satellite service available to us. At high latitudes such as this, any time there is significant elevation in the landscape the satellite signal gets blocked because of the low angle,” said Scowcroft. “There are some fjords, for example, up there with pretty steep cliffs. Whenever we’re in that environment we won’t be able to reach the satellite.” The expedition also includes a group of undergraduate and graduate students who are
interested in pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). “It is imperative that we educate the next generation of scientists who will be addressing really important scientific concerns and human concerns over the next several decades. And so I think that giving these young folks the opportunity to experience this environment hands-on, as they conduct research side by side with leading scientists, will change their lives,” said Scowcroft. Scowcroft sees Arctic research as a key to understanding climate change on a global scale. She said that the Arctic region impacts the entire planet because any change to the Arctic climate produces a ripple effect that is felt by all of us. “If you think of the Earth as [being] like a giant spiderweb, the Arctic is one of the main radial threads of that spiderweb. Anything that touches it is felt by the entire web. That’s how I think about it,” she said. “The Northwest Passage is a key area in terms of the meltwater flowing into the North Atlantic, where it’s a driver of ocean circulation […] We really don’t have a lot of information about the water circulation up there or how greenhouse gasses are being exchanged with the
atmosphere. Our scientists will be providing pieces of this climatic puzzle through their research,” said Scowcroft. Scowcroft said that the consequences of the melting polar ice will have drastic effects on local wildlife that depend on ice for survival, and she said it’s having big impacts on Inuit communities because they also rely on the ice. The melting also has global implications. “We depend on the ocean to take a good deal of the carbon dioxide that we produce out of the atmosphere, and that if that happens, the amount of carbon dioxide that the ocean can sequester changes because of circulation between the Arctic and the Atlantic,” she said. Because the scale of the ongoing global warming is unprecedented in recorded human history, Scowcroft said that modern science is treading in unknown territory. “Nobody has a crystal ball. There’s a lot of uncertainty in science because the changes that we’re experiencing have never happened so rapidly on the planet before. We have no evidence that can tell us what we should actually expect. So it’s all based on modelling and prediction.” While cont’d on page 13 ...

Her team’s publicengagement initiatives include a documentary film, podcasts, webinars, as well as seminars at universities and museums across the United States. “The people that we reach will have a much better understanding of why scientific research is important in the Arctic, what’s happening in the Arctic and how the changes that are happening up there are not just impacting the Indigenous

communities and wildlife, but also their own lives.” “Think about communicating from the Arctic 150 or 200 years ago. They would hand letters to a ship heading south, or a reporter would send his notes down to a newspaper. it would sometimes take a year, sometimes two years before people read the letters or got the reports about what was going on up in the North, and here we are sitting up there sharing what we are seeing and experiencing live, instantly, to the world. What a change that is!” said Dave Clark, one of the principal investigators on the Northwest Passage expedition. “The opportunity to actually be up there and live it and see it for ourselves is very exciting.” Clark is an Emmy Awardwinning documentary filmmaker who has worked on a variety of northern projects with National Geographic, over the past 30 years, including a 1976 expedition in the Yukon for a film called Yukon Passage. “That was my first exposure to the Yukon, and it was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Clark. Drawing on his connection with the North, Clark said that he became aware of the warming and opening of the Northwest Passage in the summertime. “It just seemed kind of obvious to me. Here you have this remote, harsh,
Participants will be exposed to wildlife native to the Northwest Passage isolated place called the Arctic, and all of a sudden ships can travel through in the summertime because the ice is melting and never did before,” said Clark. He came up with the idea of making a documentary film about the Northwest Passage and pitched a partnership to the University of Rhode Island. “Everybody is hearing about the issues in the Arctic and they want to know more about it, so it’s a timely topic and it’s exciting. You think about what the Arctic is and how remote it is. It’s a very intriguing place,” said Clark. His documentary angle morphed into a serious science project and research expedition when they were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation. “It’s became much bigger than just a documentary, and I’m delighted about that […] and you know it’s been a long haul,” said Clark. The two-hour television documentary, Frozen Obsession, will explore the

the opening of the Northwest Passage presents some interesting maritime shipping potential, from an economic perspective, Scowcroft said that the signs all point to serious environmental damage as well as risk to human and animal life. Scowcroft said that she hopes the research initiative will gain further steam after the expedition ends and that the scientific party can contribute significantly to the global community’s understanding of what’s happening in the Arctic.

Edmonton Eskimos memorabilia
CFL yearbook by a young fan-atic
M
y dad became a season ticket holder for the Edmonton Eskimos (EE) in 1959. I cannot say when he first became a loyal Eskimos fan, but I can tell you that the association of my father with the EE was indelibly imprinted upon the hearts of all those who attended his memorial service in 1981. My father died in June of that year. My cousin Sandy made it clear in his eulogy that my father would not want any service to get in anybody’s way of sitting back with a beer and watching an Eskimos game. I was born in 1958. I cannot tell you exactly when I became a big Eskimos fan, but I must have been
pretty serious about it by 1970. In 1970, 1971 and 1972, when I was 12, 13 and 14, respectively, I produced what might be called “yearbooks” of the Canadian Football League (CFL), starring the Edmonton Eskimos, as the front covers announced. A typical yearbook consisted of “the memo,” which was about 30 pages of solid (no paragraph breaks) handwritten description of everything that happened in the CFL that year. There were depth charts, odds n’ ends (statistics and player moves), team standings, scores and, best of all, the standings pool. Every year I would collect 50 cents from every
relative I could charm the cash out of and get a prediction for the final team standings for the year. Then I’d create a pool. All the money–usually about $5.50–went to the person who was closest to the actual final standings. My recollection was that I did not start going to Eskimos games with my dad until I was 14 or 15. From there, my love of the Eskimos increased. Seeing the games in person at Clarke Stadium and, later, at Commonwealth Stadium, only intensified the relationship over the years. It’s been well over 40 years, but I can still remember the taste and feel of the hot dogs wrapped in foil, the watery hot chocolate and the pain in my feet as the temperature dropped below zero. Still, we remained faithfully in our seats, win or lose. I still remember the voice of Bryan Hall on the post-game radio show as we drove home. I even remember the faces of the two suave (think 70s handlebar moustaches and sheepskin coats) older guys (maybe late 20s) who sat with their girlfriends in the row ahead of us. My parents moved to Vancouver in 1977 and, for a short, but glorious time, the season tickets were mine. My father’s loyalty to the Eskimos never faltered with the move and neither did mine when I followed them to the West Coast two years later. Those season tickets were then passed on to my brother via loan. When I did not return to Edmonton as originally intended, due to minor matters such as marriage, a career and better weather, the tickets were officially made my brother’s. It has now been nearly 60 years that the Waitt family has had season tickets to see the Edmonton Eskimos. However, I can no longer say that they are the same seats, as my brother changed seat locations a couple of years ago. I was not pleased with what it did to our legacy, but I got over it. Fast forward 37 years from the move to the “wet” coast, when I had recently left Vancouver for the Great White North, as my brother calls it. Whitehorse had now been my new home for a little over three months and it was the day I was marrying Jennifer Moorlag at the United Church in downtown Whitehorse. Approximately 150 people attended. Wonderful ceremony. After the usual hugging, handshakes and chatting outside the church, I was standing around with my daughter (unfortunately, she has not picked
up the family EE torch) when I suddenly realized, “OMG. I forgot to tape the Eskimos game today!” My daughter and I rushed back home and recorded the game for later, then headed to the reception. It wasn’t until months later that I discovered that, not only had I left my bride at the church, but so had everyone else at the ceremony, except a family friend who was our shuttle driver. Jennifer and I retell that story and laugh at it often. My motherin-law was not as amused at that particular incident. Clearly, she was not an EE fan either. Obviously my love of the CFL and the Edmonton Eskimos has not diminished through the many years that I lived away from Edmonton. In fact, my passion for the EE has increased. I occasionally meet other EE fans, but none with the knowledge and fervor for the team that my brother and I have. Players, coaches and general managers come and go. There have been five Grey Cup victories in a row and then years which were painful to watch, but my loyalty to the Eskimos will never waver. Hopefully they will bury me in green and gold. HERITAGE Conversations Part Two
Protecting more than a park
Park ranger keeps Inuvialuit stories alive on Herschel Island-Qikiqtaruk by Leighann Chalykoff
W
hen Richard Gordon was a young man he worked on an oil rig in the Beaufort Sea, but often found himself looking across the water to a special place he had visited as a child. “I’d look out and think about all the times my parents brought me down there and the stories that I’d heard from the elders as a kid,” said Gordon. “The island holds so many stories and those stories are very dear to my heart.”
The Inuvialuit know it as Qikiqtaruk, which translates to “big island.” When European explorer Sir John Franklin spotted it in 1826, he named it Herschel Island to honour a family of British scientists—astronomers Sir William Herschel, his sister Caroline and his son John. Today the two names have been combined into Herschel Island-Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park. Measuring 116 square kilometres, the landmass off of Yukon’s northern coast is protected as a special conservation area for wildlife and traditional uses. In 1996, after leaving the oil industry, Gordon took a job as a park ranger on the island. For the last 23 years, he has been one of the people who ensures that the history of this unique place is protected and understood by visitors. “Working on Qikiqtaruk has really brought me back to who I am as an Inuvialuit, and has made me proud,” said Gordon. “I feel like I’m giving back to my people by telling visitors from around the world about who we are and why it’s so important to make sure the land is protected for generations to come.” For thousands of years, the island was a gathering place for Inuvialuit who harvested on the land. In the 1800s, the Beaufort Sea became a final refuge for the overharvested bowhead whale. At that time, whalers used the island as a base to overwinter so they could be ready to harvest as soon as the ice broke up in spring. Over the years, missionaries, traders and the RCMP all used the island and left their marks in

Herschel Island-Qikiqtaruk became Yukon’s first territorial park in 1987. Today, tenets outlined in the IFA ensure that families continue to use the area for traditional activities, such as harvesting for subsistence. Hiring Inuvialuit such as Gordon to work on the island also ensures that the Indigenous history of the area continues to be heard. “We, as park rangers of Inuvialuit descent, ensure that we tell our stories as the people who used the island from the beginning of time,” he said. “My parents were

likes to grab a history book and hike to the north shore of the island to sit and read. As the tundra warms and melts, he can hear the sounds of the ice breaking up, the bowhead and beluga whales coming close to the shore. “I am in my own world and I am so touched by the spirit of the land—I feel blessed to be there and to see it—I feel part of history,” he said. Currently, the island receives four to five hundred visitors each season, between April and September. Over the past few years, cruise ship traffic has supplanted air travel. With the new highway connecting Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, that number may rise in the coming years as more visitors may be able to make their way to the island on chartered boats. It’s something the island has to prepare for, as each visitor can leave their own mark on the island as their footsteps can pack down vegetation. “Our elders used the land for survival. They hunted there and they fished and we have to protect that land for the next generation,” said Gordon. “Each wave that hits the shore can take away one of our stories if we’re not careful.”
the last generation of people who had to go out on the land to get food, so my parents had to take us with them to get fish to make dry fish, harvest caribou to make dry meat, harvest the beluga whale to make maktaaq and oil, and harvest berries—that was their livelihood.” After spending decades on the island, Gordon knows its seasonal rhythms well. He usually takes the first trip of the year in the first week of April when the land is still covered in a blanket of snow and polar bears frequent the area. By May, the warmth of the sun starts to melt the tops of the hills. Over the years, Gordon has seen the changing climate impact the rate of melting on the island. It used to be a slow slip into spring, but now the snow melts quickly. As the green moss starts to appear, so do the snow buntings, which spend their summers nested in rocky areas. The land comes back to life. “As the elders would say, once you hear the snow buntings that means spring is coming,” he said. “If you listen, you’ll hear the birds arriving and the trickle of water under the snowbanks. You’ll see the caribou start to appear and you’ll see the muskox. “When you reflect back on to that, you’ll understand why it’s so important for us to protect Herschel Island for the next generation. You have to be there to hear it, to feel it and to touch it.” Once the thaw comes, Gordon
