Spring Backyard into summer by Hugh Copland

Part 10 We live in one of the most geothermal active locations in North America. The entire west coast is influenced by plate tectonics. As continental-sized pieces of crust slide against each other, they produce heat. This thermal activity can come to surface as hot springs.

Alpha Pool, Liard Hot Springs

T

here are at least 70 major springs in northern British Columbia, Alaska, western Northwest Territories and the Yukon. They do not always have to be hot. No matter what the temperature is, a spring, according to the American Geological Institute is “a place where water flows naturally from rock or soil upon the land or into a body of surface water.” The official definition of a “thermal” spring is one with a temperature that is five degrees above the mean annual air temperature for a location. For Whitehorse, the mean annual air temperature is about minus one degree Celsius, for Mayo it’s minus four, and for Old Crow, it’s minus 10. Above 32 degrees Celsius, a spring officially becomes a hot spring. Liard Hot Springs Alpha Pool is between 42 and 53 degrees Celsius, Takhini is around 45 and the Warm Springs south of Atlin can range from 10 to 30 de-

grees Celsius. A lot of springs, especially the warmer ones, can carry a large amount of dissolved elements. If a spring carries more than 1000 milligrams per litre of total dissolved solids, it can be called a mineral spring. This is about twice the recommended maximum limits for drinking water. When a spring is high in elements like sodium and magnesium and is frequented by wildlife, it may be known as a mineral lick. Wildlife studies in northern B.C. near Muncho Lake have shown that mineral licks are used by animals such as moose, elk, deer, goats and sheep. They frequent these locations mainly in the late spring/early summer before new nutrient-rich plant growth is readily available. Animals tended to stay one to two hours before moving on. Studies in Denali National Park in Alaska showed that the most visited spring had the highest sodium content. Whether you are a moose

Terrace formation at The Hanging Gardens, Liard or a human, sodium is an important electrolyte the body needs to function. As well as sodium and magnesium, springs can also be rich in calcium, iron, silica, sulphur and strontium. Natural strontium is harmless. It gets its bad name from a radioactive isotope produced only during nuclear explosions. Most springs are neutral to slightly alkaline in acidity. You can get an idea of the chemistry of the water by the minerals that are deposited at surface. When the spring water contacts the air, it loses some of the carbon dioxide dissolved within it, just as a can of ginger ale loses its carbonation when you open it. The loss of carbon dioxide from the water reduces the acidity and allows minerals to crystallize and precipitate (or drop out of) the water. The most common minerals are calcium carbonates (calcite, aragonite), sodium carbonates, calcium and magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts), and silica. Calcite and aragonite are interesting minerals. They have the same chemical formula, CaCO3, but have different crystal shapes. It is like the difference between diamonds and graphite. Both are just different structures of carbon. Calcite is the softer of the two, but aragonite is a metastable mineral. Aragonite is formed at higher temperatures and pressures than calcite, but it will eventually change into calcite. This could take hundreds of millions of years, but the transformation does happen. The minerals accumulate and turn to rock known as travertine or tufa. If a silica mineral domincont’d on page 3 ...

Spring into summer ... cont’d ates, it is called sinter. The minerals can commonly accumulate as thin-walled rims that form pools. They can also cascade down a hill, forming terraces. The Hanging Gardens at Liard Hot Springs are a good example of this. Hot springs often form along deep faults. These faults act as conduits for groundwater to be able to circulate down as far as two to three kilometres deep. Studies at hot springs in Japan show rocks at this depth were 200 to 300 degrees Celsius. The chemistry of Liard Hot Springs and Banff Hot Springs are very similar. Scientists believe that they both are related to deep thrust faults that formed the Rocky Mountains. Hot springs create fantastic conditions for vibrant and exotic flora. In 1978, T.C. Reid, a graduate student at the University of Calgary, did a thesis on “The Vegetation and Environmental Patterns of Liard River Hot Springs.” He confirmed that thermally-influenced vegetation showed signs of earlier annual development. He also catalogued numerous species not normally found in the northern boreal forest. There are 14 types of orchids, exotic ferns, black snakeroot, stinging nettle and carnivorous aquatic plants like bladderwort. The ponds below the hot springs along the boardwalk are also home to Lake Chub minnows and the northwest boreal toad. The

there are several remote springs. The Coal River Springs Territorial Park was the first site in the Yukon to receive an Ecological Reserve designation. The springs are known for their extensive terrace development. The area is very remote and difficult to access. Contact Government of Yukon Parks for further information. pinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one. Except Adam and Eve, reportedly. Even a casual glance at Facebook, Twitter, or similar social media platforms confirms a disturbing fact: opinions are actually far more numerous than belly buttons. Anyone can have an unlimited number of the former, but usually just one of the latter. Many people (in my opinion, far too many) can cough up a multitude of opinions in a single day, a single hour, even a single sentence. There’s no social requirement for said opinions to be based in logic of any discernible kind. Neither need they be consistent with one another from moment to moment, or even from one neuronal firing to another. Unlike snowflakes and belly buttons, no two of which are identical, opinions come in just two varieties: your own (which are sound and justified) and others’ (which are patent nonsense). For more than 50 years, I’ve derived much of my income from being willing to express my opinions, either in print or on-air. Having cranked out literally thousands of editorials, reviews,

speeches, personal essays and other opinion pieces, I believe I’m uniquely qualified to explain the various categories of professional opinionators currently at work. Please note, I deliberately said “I believe”, rather than stating as unassailable fact that I am appropriately qualified. In this game, even if you secretly suspect something cannot be empirically verified, confidence is everything. So, herewith my personal take on those who peddle their (our) opinions in order to pay the rent. 1. Pundits. May or may not have a clue what a current situation means, or where it might be headed, but can explain it in witty, entertaining, and quotable bites. Being a certified pundit is a guaranteed money maker.

tice and need little coaxing to share their in-depth views on a breaking story in four eloquent minutes or less. 4. Talking heads. Those wellcoiffed “news show” hosts, who require virtually no information about a subject other than the ideological bent of whatever outlet is writing the cheque. 5. Thumb-suckers and navalgazers. Well-intentioned intellectual wanderers, endlessly searching for meaning in the cornfields of fact-land. Usually harmless. 6. Cassandras and Jeremiahs. The finger-wagging and weepyeyed prophets of doom whose sole pleasure comes from waiting to say, “I told you so.”

2. Analysts. Most boring of the lot. Tend to lard their material with a lot of tedious facts, on the premise that if you can’t convince someone, you can at least overcome their resistance by putting them to sleep.

7. Conspiracy-mongers.They’re right. Everyone else is plotting to destroy us all.

3. Commentators. Semi-recognizable experts in a given field who can be summoned on short no-

T

he Yukon bird since 1985, the ubiquitous raven arrives out of nowhere and disappears just as quickly. It all depends on the food supply. They are a very social bird, often seen in pairs, but also in great mobs especially in winter on a food source. Scientific testing has proven these are very intelligent creatures and they do seem to plan out some of their chicanery. As an example, watch how two ravens empty the chained dog’s food dish. One bird makes all kinds of sounds and lands just beyond the reach of the dog on the now fully extended chain. This bird dances and squawks, keeping the dog busy, while the other bird eats from the food dish. The birds then trade places and the second birds gets to eat. Another indicator of raven savvy is the attack on the jumbo bag of dog or cat food, sitting unprotected in the back of a pickup truck. You won’t see them tearing into a 12pack of toilet tissue because they know the difference. Nothing is safe in a black plastic garbage bag, at least until the birds have torn it open to see if the contents meet raven standards for edibility. They are usually very wary of humans, but will group just outside your vehicle window if you are passing out food samples or the end of a sandwich. If you stay in your vehicle they can be coaxed to land on your hood or mirror and take food from your hand. In win-

ter I usually carry some dog or cat kibble in a Tupperware container to throw out into the parking lots of big box stores. A crowd soon gathers and they can be brought nearer by throwing the kibble closer to the truck. Ravens are often around our cabin. One day I watched a raven land directly under a plastic milk jug bird feeder. The bird paused only a second and then flew up into the bottom of the suspended milk jug, spilling the sunflower seeds on the ground where they could be eaten. Just a few weeks ago at the cabin, I noticed a solo raven busily pecking away at the ground at the front of my vehicle, about 30 or 40 metres from me. Off and on over the next hour or so I noticed the bird was still busy at the same spot. A while later, I went to close the vehicle windows as rain was threatening. There on the driver’s seat were two different size Ziploc bags with long slashes through the flat sides. The bags were empty except for a few crumbs and I quickly realized that these had been my snack bags, full of at least seven Clif bars and numerous granolatype bars. These full bags had been stuffed in under my driver’s seat. The bird would have had to land on my window sill, hop onto the seat, crawl into the tight space under the steering wheel, locate and retrieve both bags, then exit the same route it used to enter.

PHOTO: Pixabay The bird had likely done this before and the experience was educational for me. Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

ell-Read Books will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year and it’s a labour of love for the partners that own the store, which has established itself as a venue for the arts community. Over the years, Well-Read has hosted everything from a wedding to a wake, as well as numerous poetry readings, storytellings,

But it’s the attachment to community and connection with customers that has paved the way for two decades of success in Whitehorse. “I think one of our big reasons for success in the community has to do with customer service,” said co-owner Jan Stick via email. “We have always tried to get to know our customers, be welcoming, be helpful, know their likes etc. “We’ve been known to call up customers when something interesting come in they might be interested in. We order books that customers are looking for—some don’t want to shop online and are happy for us to do it for them. We also offer a clean, bright, organized beautiful space, with places to sit and browse—occasionally nap. We are able to tell you if we have a book. We offer kids a great space and a great collection.” Because of that relationship, Well-Read Books is planning to share its 20th anniversary with Whitehorse residents. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the event on July 10 and will feature performances and readings throughout the day.

Some of the musicians and authors scheduled to appear include Kevin Barr, Nicholas Mah, and Sam and Claire Gallagher. It will also feature a noon-hour address from the three business partners, who will also be serving cupcakes. They will be on hand to discuss the special exhibit for the event, “Lost Things Found,” which has been inspired by their book dealings over the last 20 years. Those two decades have not come without some ups and downs, according to Stick. “For a while we saw sales slip when ebooks came out,” Stick said. “But customers have reverted back to real books for home—and perhaps ebooks for travel.” And those years have seen a myriad of different clientele come through the doors, which reflects the scope of what WellRead Books has to offer. “People that have come since day one; families, children, outof-towners (from) Atlin, Skagway and Yukon communities, schools, daycares,” Stick emailed when asked about the types of custom-

Roasted tomato panzanella salad

P

anzanella is a traditional Italian way of using old bread and lovely fresh tomatoes. While the original version uses crusty Italian bread, this version is geared more towards using up leftover rolls from summer parties with friends. Roasting cherry tomatoes and combining

them with fresh chopped tomatoes helps create more of a loose dressing for the bread, and toasting the bread helps to dry it out and make room for the tomato dressing to soak in. Make sure you toast the bread until it’s crisp and dry. Serves 4

Submitted by Steve Wilson Driving home from Swan Haven on April 6, I saw a small herd of caribou on the side of the Alaska Highway, about a kilometer south of the Carcross cut-off. I was so excited. It was my ďŹ rst caribou sighting and they were only a couple kilometers from our house! They are a part of the Southern Lakes Caribou herd and are seldom seen this far north.

Enjoy the Klondike Krankfest mountain biking festival on July 13 and 14 by Kylie Campbell Club (CMBC). Klondike Krankfest replaces CMBC’s previous summer event, 24 Hours of Light. Plans until late May anticipated

a three-day weekend event that would feature many activities including a downhill mountain bike race, an enduro race, a cross-coun-

his month, Mt. McIntyre will host the new summer mountain bike festival, organized by the Contagious Mountain Bike

try race, skills clinics, bike demos and activities for kids. All of this would occur amid weekend camping at Mt. Sima, which would also be packed with food trucks, music, workshops and more. However, unforeseen circumstances forced the club to scale back plans to an eight hour race on Saturday, advanced skill clinics on Saturday and Sunday, and a return to Mt. McIntyre trails. They still feel the changes will be successful. “There were a few reasons,” said Sammy Salter, president of CMBC. “The most direct one being, in 2019, the solstice weekend is going to be a long weekend and we weren’t expecting great attendance because most people like to get out of town for holidays. However, attendance was starting to drop off a bit in general and, as amazing as 24 Hours of Light is, we didn’t feel like we were creating the stoke for the event that we used to, both with riders and with volunteers. It felt like the right time to take the leap and try something different. This event is open to all ages

and skill levels and CMBC plans to have lots of fun at the Mt McIntyre trails throughout the weekend.. “We recognize not everyone wants to race,” said Salter. “If racing isn’t your thing, there will be ... a limited number of spots available for skills clinics too.” The future of the event may eventually lead it to Mt. Sima, which has a great history of mountain biking events and partnerships with CMBC, Boreale Biking and the Singletrack to Success program. “Those with long memories will remember cross-country as well as gravity racing at Sima,” said Steve Reid, general manager of Mt. Sima. “Between our winter programs and Slamfest, we know a thing or two about putting on a good event.” Sima has been rather successful in developing the mountain biking trails and culture with its Wednesday night public rides. “Our goal is 100 riders and we achieved that every night but one last summer. Between 100 and 200participants is pretty normal,” cont’d on page 13 ...

said Reid. “I think 150 is pretty much the sweet spot for a good, busy, feel, but minimal lift waiting time.” “People can still expect the same fun, friendly atmosphere at all CMBC events. We want to bring mountain bikers together to celebrate the amazing community we have here in the Yukon,” said Salter. “Come for the weekend … ride your bike and enjoy the midnight sun.” To find more information on events at CMBCYukon.ca or visit the CMBC Klondike Krankfest event page on Facebook.

Step outside your comfort zone and into their world Vancouver dance company to perform new work in Whitehorse

ut Innerspace Dance Theatre will present Bygones at the Yukon Arts Centre on July 9 at 7 p.m. Created and performed by David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen (in collaboration with Elya Grant, David Harvey and Renée Sigouin), this 90-minute performance is a tribute to the effort required to reach resolution. Focusing on how everything is in limbo, the artists express the painful but necessary in-betweens. Bygones earns transformation and unleashes new spirit with the ability to rebuild. Out Innerspace is a Vancouverbased contemporary dance organization founded in 2007 by directors Raymond and Tregarthen. The

company has dedicated more than 10 years to creating extraordinary and integral dance experiences through uncompromising rigour and unreserved ingenuity. Out Innerspace has also developed a dance school, which offers pivotal post-secondary contemporary dance education to young aspiring professionals. It serves as a training ground for some of Canada’s most exciting new dance artists. Recently though, Bygones has been a major focus. “We worked in phases across two years” said Tregarthen. “We would come together in different groupings, sometimes just David and I, or with the whole dance team.” Bygones was created
