Yukon communities have their Canada Day traditions on July 1

T

his Canada Day, Yukoners will celebrate in communities across the territory with traditional activities. In Mayo, the day’s festivities coincide with the Mayo Arts Festival where local artists, craftspeople and musicians share their talents and creations with others. In Watson Lake, they’ll celebrate Canada Day with festivities at the Lucky Lake Park and water slide, which features the only outdoor water slide North of 60. In Dawson City, participants can take in the annual parade, barbecue and carnival.

In Whitehorse, the traditional parade begins at 11 a.m. It travels down Second Avenue to Shipyards Park, where the majority of activities take place. A key event each year remains the citizenship ceremony where we formally welcome new Canadians to their new country.

Whitehorse residents enjoy the 2018 Canada Day parade organized by the Royal Canadian Legion dezvous Royal Family.

Whitehorse Canada Day celebrations also benefit from the Adäka Cultural Festival happening at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, just a short distance from Shipyards Park. The festival features workshops throughout Canada Day, as well as musical performances and cultural demonstrations, and an evening of jigging and square dancing.

Most Yukon communities organize a Canada Day parade, but several put their own spin on the

traditional festivity. Dawson City dusts off a historic fire engine for an event that features the Gertie’s performers. Haines Junction makes their parade a highway affair and gets onto the Alaska Highway as it cuts through town near the St. Elias Convention Centre.

remember my first conversation with Joe Ben Raven like it happened yesterday. It was the winter construction season of 1972-73 up on the Eagle Plains of the Yukon’s half-built Dempster Highway in a borrow pit south of the Oasis in the Wilderness—a hotel which is itself only 35 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle.

Today it sits on the old site of the final camp of Majestic Wiley Oilfield Services, the Alberta company tasked with getting the Dempster to the southern bank of the Eagle River and the crossing where the Engineering Corps of the Canadian Army would build the bridge the following winter as a training exercise.

I was one of about ten “Catskinners” (Bulldozer operators) running a D-8H, or maybe a K, as we had both. We ripped and dozed the permafrost to be piled up and loaded onto high-speed Kenworth short-dumps, It was then hauled out to end-of-grade where it was used as the subbase of the eventual finished road.

The work had to be done in the winters between November and April (the colder the better) so the material stayed frozen until it was covered and protected. It was just another day at the office until lunch break at low noon when I shut the machine off and opened my lunch pail. As I was filling my thermos with coffee, a young raven landed on the hood of the Cat, not three feet away, and said emphatically, “Kronk!

Kronk! Kronk!” To me, it sounded like a demand: “give me food!”

So I did. Without thinking, I also uttered my first “caw-caw gurgle,” by which I meant “OK, here ya are.” And the raven replied with a single “gronku,” which sounded to me just like “thank you.”

That moment was the start of it. I recall chuckling to myself and wondering if, considering I was talking to the birds on the Dempster, it was maybe time to take some days off, go to town (Dawson City) and visit my girlfriend.

My fellow operators, three of them working in the same pit, noticed that I seemed to have acquired a new friend because Joe Ben Raven showed up every day at lunchtime, and both coffee breaks, begging for a handout.

When one mentioned I appeared to be talking to the raven, I asked my coworker if he had a dog?

“Yes.” And did he talk to the dog at times?

“Of course. Everybody talks to their dogs.”

And did the dog ever reply or talk back?

“Never.”

Well, my raven talks back and he’s ten times smarter than any dog who ever lived, including Lassie, Raspoochin and Rin Tin Tin. At the very beginning, it was like an adult talking to an infant identifying objects and how to pronounce them. I was the infant because ravens don’t have lips and could never pronounce our complex English-language words such as serendipity and ubiquitous (two of my favourites) even with a split tongue like parrots, macaws and magpies. But I could easily mimic the sounds and throaty gutterings, mutterings and utterings of the raven while

He has followed me everywhere I’ve lived since 1972 to continue the endless dialogue. He does disappear at times, for various reasons, and I have a Viking raven flag which I hoist on my truck antenna when I want to talk to him

he patiently taught me his language, which is called ravenese in Canada and ravenish in England. I was not the first crazy white man to try to break down the language barrier between ravens and humans. In the early 20th century in northern Maine, there was a reclusive old Yankee logger who spoke Frenglish and had a shelter for wild birds and animals. He had been studying ravens for half a century and identified over 100 combinations of raven sounds and what they meant, creating a raven dictionary of sorts. That same man had a pet raven in his domestic flock.

He knew for a fact it was 90 years old when most scientists believed a raven’s lifespan to be in the range of 25 to 40 years. When I eventually asked Joe Ben Raven which was more accurate, he said he knew many centenarian ravens in the Yukon when he was a chick, most of them in his late father’s high Arctic flock, which followed the migrating Porcupine caribou herds with their endless supply of carrion. That first winter on The Dempster in 1972, when I was learning the ABC’s of ravenese, I was 25 years old. I’m 72 now, which means we met 47 years ago when he was a young and single bird of four or five years. He’s pushing 60 now and is still in good shape with no signs of old age.

Ronnie McPhee, an ex-Maritimer (“But not a Newfie!”) who was a fisherman on the Yukon River in the 70s and early 80s, flew the same flag on his long flat-bottom riverboat out of Dawson to indicate when he was loaded with salmon for sale. He was known as McFish to the miners around town, although my personal nickname for him was “The Mad Leprechaun” because of his size and appearance. He was the only human being I ever met who shared my interest or obsession with ravenology. There was only one big difference between us. I simply wanted to write about ravens while McPhee wanted to actually BE a raven. He was jealous that he wasn’t and was resentful of their arrogant freedom and independence. He kept a gut bucket on the bow of his riverboat simply to feed the ravens. There was a small local flock that was always riding up and down the river with him on his boat, named “Nevermore” to honour Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote “The Raven” in 1845.

Raven kronks, leprechaun croaks ... cont’d I broke the language barrier, I decided to introduce him to McPhee who refused to believe I had learned how to talk to ravens up on the Dempster. We were sitting on a summer bench located on Main Street in Dawson, outside the front door of The Midnight Sun saloon. We were sharing a brown paper bag containing fermented grape juice when I kronked for Joe Ben to get off the telephone pole and join us.

McPhee was incredulous and bug-eyed as he listened to Joe Ben and I kronk, gronk, gurgle and caw in animated conversation on a Dawson street corner.

“Amazing!” he said. “I couldn’t be more surprised if one of my gutted salmon sat up and started singing ‘Old Man River’ in the middle of a fish sale. What did he just say to you?”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Yes.” “He was just asking me who’s this stinking asshole I’m sitting with who smells like a dead salmon?”

While McPhee cracked up laughing, the two of them bonded and we became three with McPhee, the sole Yukon human to learn of our recent language discovery, and our one and only student.

So McPhee and I elected to tell the raven about our intense mutual dislike of seagulls which was caused by a best-selling book published in 1970. It sold 1.5 million copies around the world, but mostly to spacey urban yuppies and intellectuals stoned on pot

turns reading it to Joe Ben. This infused in the mighty black bird an anger and loathing of seagulls the equal of our own. We read it to him like human mothers read Winnie the Pooh to their darling children. This filled him with a burning urge to tell the world the true story about northern birds in general and ravens in particular.

Indeed, the muse for the simmering rage of Joe Ben Raven was the disgusting and pathetic boohoo idealism of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Two young human misfits and one nasty raven set out to prove 1.5 million seagull readers wrong.

The book truly sucked and they were all suckers to buy it, making the author, rumoured to be Stephen King, rich if not infamous.

Next time, we’ll begin explaining why raven mythology is the road to truth, beauty and a gracious eternity while lowly seagulls are just landfill garbagepickers trying to survive. And why Joe Ben Raven aspired to become a bird of prey, rather than a scavenger, and kill them all.

hat does it take to be Canadian?

I’ve been in this country two-and-a-half years. After 18 months of processing, I received my permanent residency on Jan. 5, 2019 and started the march towards citizenship. In 2021, I will be able to take my citizenship test and officially call myself Canadian.

I was lucky. Being an Australian and New Zealand citizen I am entitled to temporary work visas to Canada and many other countries.

Many are not always so lucky and the process can be daunting, timeconsuming and expensive. I mean, I had to do an English exam (yes,

I know I have a funny accent, but my mother tongue is still English) that cost $300 and is only valid for two years.

My education, my work experience, my adaptability, my funds, they all added up to a certain number of points. I spent 12 months sitting and waiting to find out if I reached the threshold to be invited to apply.

For others, it can take longer.

You sit and wait and the only consideration is your number. It doesn’t matter I’m from Australia.

It doesn’t matter I’m already in the Yukon. It doesn’t matter I volunteer, or made a life, or any of the things that make me, me.

I scored 447 points out of 1200.

Every piece of paper had to prove I was 447 points.

Once invited to apply, you have a certain number of days to prepare all your documents and submit them. This includes any trip you’ve ever taken outside

Why did you decide to come to Canada: After high school I took a gap year that never ended ... Well, instead of going back, I built my life in Canada.

What do you think are the key requirements to being a ‘good’ Canadian: I spent my first decade in Canada trying to figure that out.

To get a handle on this culture, this identity I was joining, simply wanting to integrate in the flow of life here. At that time, being Canadian was still defined mostly as not being an American. I think I am more focussed on what it means to me to live a good life and to live my life well, in community and through work.

What was the hardest part of becoming Canadian: Germany doesn’t have dual citizenship, so I had to wait for an opportunity to obtain an exemption under the German law in order to be able to become Canadian while retaining my German citizenship. I received that exemption certificate in 2016.

The Canadian part was quite easy as I came via the live-in caregiver program which had a well defined path toward PR.

Country of Birth: South Sudan.

How Many Years in Canada: Seven years.

Year you became PR/Citizen: Became citizen in 2015 after waiting for four years as PR.

Why did you decide to come to Canada: Came to Canada to study and work.

Why did you decide to live in the Yukon: Summers are great in Yukon. Love nature. Yukon has it all, wildlife, natural vegetation and lakes.

What do you think are the key requirements to being a ‘good’ Canadian: Your adaptability to Canadian way of life, i.e. culture and rule of law.

What was the hardest part of becoming Canadian: Definitely waiting. The clock was ticking very slowly as I waited and waited!

Traditional Stories with Mauretia Holloway & Copper Joe Jack

A true telling, unchanged and sacred I

was fortunate enough to sit with Joe Jack, the grandson on Copper Chief, son of Billie Jack and Agnes Boss. Through stories, Jack traces his roots all the way back to Alaska. His great grandfather Taicho came to Canada in 1885. He has family in the Yukon and Alaska.

Jack is taking the big step of allowing the stories he has learned, from childhood through adulthood, to be written down and shared for the first time. To begin understanding the place of traditional stories in Jack’s culture, it is important to know that traditional stories are “hand-in-glove” with traditional knowledge. This is because the stories are of the land, and in Jack’s culture, the land is sacred.

Therefore, traditional stories are also regarded as sacred.

In a world where the land is seen only as a resource, these sacred stories offer a perspective that can bring us into a different understanding of the world we live in.

Jack was five years old when his father first began telling him stories. At the time, he had no idea of the importance of these stories. However, as years went by and he heard the stories over and over again, they became part of his bones. He heard the stories on hunting trips, sitting on the land under the stars and meeting up with his family. Story was a large part of his life with his father, who always told the stories with all the facts exactly the same. Nothing was changed, enhanced or altered.

Jack intrinsically understood that the stories were to remain as he heard them. These stories had been passed down from one generation to the next. In this sharing, the teller always kept the story as it was heard. No deviation. The telling was pristine.

While we sat together, Jack gave me an image to use to under-

stand this more fully. “ I m agine,” he told me. “A giant puzzle.

Each story is a piece of that puzzle, and in order to complete the puzzle and truly see the big picture, each piece needs to fit. if we change even one tiny piece of the puzzle, it will not fit seamless into the pieces around it. It will change what we see. If there was a tiny deviation of all the pieces, the picture, the stories we paint for people to understand would be false. People may look at their piece and say, ‘that cannot be right, because my view tells me this, and your story does not tie up with mine.’”

I thought of the world’s written history and who wrote it down and from what place they viewed those events. Consider if those historians sat down within a medicine wheel, with eight directions, and one in the centre, and told the story of the events that happened from eight differing points of view.

Imagine if they then used the centre to shift and move and shake and correct and make sure all the pieces locked together seamlessly.

What would our history look like?

What would we understand of the past? What would we have learned?

In the weeks ahead, Jack will be bringing onto the page the stories that go back generations. The stories that we will now be able to read will be exactly as they were told by that very first teller.

We will be sitting around the fire of truth, able to reach across to each other and find a vision of all the parts of the picture—one that is accurate, crisp and pure.

his happened a few years after Taicho brought his family over from Alaska from his community or village of Taral Village near Chitina, Alaska, over the Copper Grease trail which was located up the Kennicott river to the headwaters of the White and down the White River. His family would reside for the first three years in a place called Tchawsahmon Lake because it was good fishing there. In the summer he would take his family back up near the headwaters of the White to a place called North Fork Island, here he would gather with his Ahtna relatives, and some Upper Tanana people from Chisana area.

On this particular summer when he got up to North Fork Island camp, there was nobody else there. It was early July, the weather was very hot, the sun was very hot and they could see nearby on a glacier, a band of caribou, maybe 10 to a dozen lying on the ice pack to cool themselves. When Taicho spotted them, he quickly got excited and said “I’m gonna go after them and see if I can get some meat.” He had with him his favourite musket that he had bought earlier on Alaska side for one black fox and two silver foxes. We figured that

this musket cost about $1.400, because at that time, a black fox was worth about a $1,000, and silver foxes about $200 each.

So he grabbed his brand-new musket, his pellet bag, called his oldest son whose English name was Copper Joe (about 10 years old) to go with him to see if they could get a caribou. They went across the flats and snuck up to the caribou. They had to go across willow flats because a tributary runs off the glaciers and all these meandering streams drain into the White River. You could see the valley bottom of glacial gravel throughout.

There would be willow communities, willows and gravel bottom, with dirty water running from glaciers. He snuck up to the caribou and he picked the big bull to shoot and killed the bull. As it dropped, he began to reload his gun. Caps go first, then the powder and then the pellet slug, you pull the trigger back, that created a spark, which ignites the caps, then ignites the powder and boom. Just when he needed to put in the caps, he checked and noticed, he did not have any caps. His caps had fallen out of the bag. Just then, his medicine doctor told him in his mind, “Hurry up and try and get

home because danger is coming your way.” Soon as he heard that, he told his son to work fast on the downed bull caribou and he said, “We have to hurry because danger is coming our way and we have to hurry because I have no cap and I have no gun.” So they opened caribou real quickly, took out the guts and took some meat, maybe diaphragm or belly meat, threw it in the packsack and began to run home. “Hurry, hurry, run ahead of me,” he told his son. His son was running in front of him, and he was walking very fast. Taicho was a tall man among his people; he stood about 6’4” so he was walking fast, as his son was running in front of him. After a while they heard this crushing behind them in the tall willows and Taiho told his son, “Keep running, don’t stop, we just scared away a bull moose, keep going.” Then again, the crashing noise came from behind and his son said, “Daddy that no moose, that’s bear coming” and Taicho said, “I know, I know, keep going.” So as they kept moving, they knew something was coming behind them. They entered this clearing that was a little grassy cont’d on page 10 ...

In the middle of this little grassy meadow was an old spruce tree with very wide trunk. Maybe twoand-a-half feet, the diameter of the trunk, and Taicho went past the tree and kept going. There was a little bank just past the tree, that was a washout, from one of the tributaries coming from the glacier, and he told his son to get behind this little bank and he said, “Don’t make any noise” and he gave him his little axe. His little axe was basically a handle about four feet long, with the axe-head maybe four inches in length. It’s used basically to blaze a trail when you’re walking through brush, or the willows ahead of you. If you are getting rained on and need to cut your way through thick bush, this was an everyday axe to use.

jungle, but they used an axe. As it was four feet long, it could also be used as a little walking stick. He gave that to his son and said, “If the grizzly bear gets me, do your best to get home.”

“Yes Daddy,” said Copper Joe and crouched down against the gravel bank.

Taicho went back to the tree in the meadow. The spruce tree was an old tree, especially in the open as the branches come right down to the ground. Sitting by itself, its wide trunk that tapers quickly and the branches come down to the ground. Taicho crawled beneath those branches and sat against the tree with his back against the trunk and his legs crossed in front of him. He pulled in one leg and then the other, crisscrossed, as close as he could towards his body, grabbed his gun, stock first, and sat there and waited. Of course, the grizzly knew where he was, as he could smell him right away.

The grizzly stuck his head under the branches to grab Taicho and, as he came in front of him, Taicho jabbed him with the stock of the gun right on its nose a few times.

He knocked the grizzly bear out with the stock of this gun and as soon as the bear went down, he crawled out and started to run.

He was about 30 yards away when he thought, “No I am not going to run away, I’m going stay here and wait.” Taicho had a knife about two feet long, so he pulled out the knife, stood 30 yards away from that grizzly bear and waited. The bear started to wake up and pulled himself out from underneath the tree. The bear was groggy and Taicho hollered at him. He said “Brother what the heck you’re trying to do anyways, what the heck you trying to kill me for, I never bother you. You’re supposed to be

PHOTOS 1&2: Pixabay my brother, and you’re trying to kill me. You see this knife? I could have cut your throat, but I didn’t, so just leave me alone. Go away.”

The grizzly bear looked at him and staggered and then he turned and walked away.

Later, when Taicho would tell this story over and over again, he would always end the story by saying, “You know I’m supposed to be a pretty smart man, people say I am a smart man, but don’t know why I didn’t kill that grizzly bear because if that grizzly bear would had got hold of me, where he would have sent me, I’m not going to need no gun anyways.”

And he would let out a big laugh.

The little boy that hid behind that bank, when it was his turn to tell the story, he would always end his story same as dad’s story by saying, “If that grizzly bear would have got my dad I would have gone after it with this little axe.”

Joe Jack the great grandson of Taicho, spoke to the importance of those two endings as his father taught him from the time he was five years old when they were out hunting on the land. “When I turned 35 years old, my father told

me it was my turn to tell these stories and that was when I took on the function of telling these family stories and my dad would listen to me as I told his stories in public. I told then at potlatches or conferences. In 1993 there was a group of five of us that went over to Alaska, to trace our roots to find out where we came from. During this trip, we met an elder from Chistochina, named Jack John Justin. Justin knew [almost] the exact same story of Taicho and the Grizzly Bear. Jack Justin said he knew my grandpa, Copper Jack. He grew up with Copper Jack, and he knew all the Copper boys that grew up on the Canada side. He said he was one of the little boys when he went to North Fork Island. His people were staying near Chisana, Alaska, so they would make their way for their summer activities over at the North Fork Island. So, the purpose saying this, that this is a confirmation, or verification of Billy Jack’s story of Taicho and the Grizzly Bear. Jack John Justin confirmed it by telling the exact story in 1993. We have never met the elder from Chistochina, until he invited into his cabin to tell us

Joe Copper Jack also had an occasion to tell the same story at a storytelling conference in Anchorage, Alaska, in October 2001. We went across to a conference in Anchorage, Alaska, an elder from Tanacross, Kenny Thomas, was one of the spectators, or participants in my storytelling session.

He would not tell me before I told my stories that he knew some Copper Chief stories. He said, “I came to listen to some Copper stories” and only after my stories where finished did he come out with a big smile and he said, “You have good stories because I’ve heard those stories before too.” So, in a way he was checking to see if my stories were the same ones that he knew. Also, Kenny Thomas and Jack John Justin’s people from the Alaska side have all the songs from Taicho family–including my grandpa’s songs. They are still holding it for us in Alaska, waiting for us to go and pick it up, which has to happen soon.

I

met Graydon and Bandit together, as everyone does, I suspect, because they are rarely apart.

We met outside the What’s Up Yukon office because my boss wanted me to orient Graydon on his first delivery route, show him the ropes so to speak. Tammy told me he was a young college student who could work a few hours between classes. She didn’t tell me he came with a side kick... but there was Bandit proudly riding shotgun in Graydon’s little Toyota truck.

You could tell right away they were besties. Chums, compadres, mates, or even confidants (dogs are such good listeners). Having grown up in ranching country in Southern Alberta, the pair reminded me of a cowboy and his working dog heading to work; remarkably comfortable and confident with each other. Graydon sporting a funky truckers cap in lieu of a cowboy hat. Bandit as excited as a Border Collie at roundup, as if we were going to herd some cattle, not deliver papers.

I would later learn that excitement was because Graydon plays a tonne with him! There might just be some herding around the corner, who knows? In Bandit’s dog mind, and with his enthusiastic owner, adventure, or at least a good wrestle, could always be around the corner!

On that Monday morning, Bandit was rooted to the seat like a kid who doesn’t share the swing at the park.

He was happy as could be next to his idol and looked unimpressed at our commands to move back or over. Not one to own much that isn’t already covered in dog hair, I tried letting him sit on my lap, but that made getting in and out of the vehicle kind of tricky.

Bandit & The Beav After we picked up about 30 bundles of papers, things got a bit tight, so Bandit tried out the view from atop the stack. Luckily, Graydon figured the job out very quickly, and I left early. I’m sure Bandit was oh-sohappy to see me go and to reclaim his rightful spot up front.

I left thinking the two were a cute pair; so connected; perfect examples of a Pawsitive Tail.

Born and raised in the Yukon, Graydon had lots of different animals as a kid. A couple of years ago, he was thrilled to get a puppy with his girlfriend, but when they split it was decided that she was in a better position to keep the dog. Though it was a mutual decision, Graydon was understandably heartbroken.

Three months later, he decided he wanted a dog on his own. A litter of Karelian & Tahltan bear dog cross puppies came up on Whitehorse Buy & Sell. At the time he was renting a room at a friends; not the best scenario for puppy training and pet ownership.

Still, he made an appointment to ‘meet and greet’ both the puppies and the breeders. If all went well, they would then hold the puppy for him until it could be weaned from mom.

“I was on my way to Rotary to meet Bandit for the first time and I was thinking: ‘Ok, what are you really doing this for?’ Graydon explained. “I started thinking of all the reasons I shouldn’t have a dog. Why I couldn’t have a dog, and why I didn’t need a dog. And I couldn’t really think of any except that I’d have to find a new place to live.

“Then (at the breeders) I picked up Bandit and he just looked up at me and he licked my chin.”

That was it. Graydon decided:

“Yeah, ok, this was the sign that this was a good idea.”

Bandit’s colouring quickly changed, but he got his name on account of an all-black face with two almost-white circles around his eyes. He socializes once a month with 2 of his brothers, Arthur and Geoffrey. “They’re all quite different...but Bandit’s the best,” boasted Graydon. “He’s just such a good boy...and he’s the perfect size.

He’s calm like me, he’s passive, he’s chill.”

It’s hard being a renter in this town; it’s impossible with a dog in tow. Even so, Graydon’s managed to always convince friends to sublet to him. He says that it helped that Bandit was so small and adorable.

As such, Bandit attracts quite a bit of female attention or, as Graydon puts it, “He’s got way more game than I do”.

He even caught the eye of Graydon’s current girlfriend, influencing their meeting.

Graydon says Bandit really motivates him and engages him to be more active on a daily basis. I asked what he’s learned about caring for an animal.

“It’s much more than just having food on the table. For sure. You gotta have play time, and you gotta have bonding. Play time is bonding and that is pretty paramount,” Graydon answered. “You can give them commands and they know they have to do it, but it doesn’t mean they want to, or that they are motivated.

“I have a friend who is good at training dogs and she taught me a few things that are pretty important.

Touch for example, a really good recall...You gotta play with them and make it fun. He’s your friend.”

That much is crystal clear.

T

he Friends of the Palace Grand (FotPG) has existed for a number of years. Originally under the umbrella of the Dawson City Arts Society (DCAS), its aim was to restore live performance to the Palace Grand Theatre, following the demise of the decades-long run of the Gaslight Follies.

For two seasons, a show operating on a model resembling Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion (called A Klondike Home Companion) featured a combination of local music and short skits, as well as some acts that arrived from Whitehorse and Outside.

These seasons were pleasing to audiences, but not financially successful without the grant money that had allowed them to be developed—funding that stemmed from the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in’s economic assessment plan, which recommended reviving the use of this tourist attraction beyond what Parks does with it.

For two seasons following these initial forays, the Palace Grand was not available for anything due to a program of upgrades and renovations undertaken by Parks Canada. During this time the FotPG split off from DCAS, formed its own society, and continued working on developing material that

might work in a revived Palace Grand.

When the theatre was available again in the summer of 2018, the Friends were ready with a show they had field-tested in the more confined venue of the KIAC Ballroom.

The Cabin of Curiosities featured local stories and legends told within the framework of a story about a pair of lost urban river travellers who encounter a strange man called “the collector.” They find him in the wilderness, not too far from the Klondike, and he rescues them after their canoe capsizes. While staying in his cabin, they experience a series of visions that tell the history of the area.

More than 30 locals were involved in the four performances that made up this short season.

FotPG knew even then that this size of cast and crew was not sustainable, but they have been working on the project since that time. They’re now prepared to offer a series of 21 shows this summer.

The membership discussed the summer project at its recent annual general meeting. It was determined that the season this year will begin in early July, and will run shows on Tuesday, Wednesday

and Thursday until the middle of August.

Jim Taggart said that one of the reasons they’ve picked these days is that summer weekends in Dawson tend to be busy with highprofile events. This plan doesn’t conflict with anything and still provides a series of scheduled evenings during the peak of the summer season.

This year‘s production is being partly funded by the Yukon Arts Fund and Lotteries Yukon. Key members of the production team will be Ange Bonnici and Justine Hobbs, who will be sharing producer and director responsibilities, and Robin Sharp, who will be involved in writing and script duties.

As with the previous season, locals are being asked to submit script and sketch ideas. The hope is to come up with a revolving series of sketches that can be changed up during the 21 performances, so that there will be some variety to the shows.

After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years.

From My Mother’s Kitchen with Murray Martin

Affordable harvested fish recipes SALMON CHOWDER Ingredients: 10 medium cubed potatoes 1 Tbsp accent (Ed. note: Accent is an early era reference to MSG, optional) 2 chopped stalks of celery ½ tsp crushed dried red peppers ½ green chopped pepper 2 Tbsp cornstarch 1 bunch chopped green onions ½ cup water 1 ½ tsp salt ¼ cup white wine ¼ tsp white pepper 5 slices bacon ¼ tsp garlic powder 5 lbs salmon fillet skinned and cubed Parsley to taste Method: Fry the bacon. Crumble, and save the drippings. Set this aside.

Mix potatoes, celery, green peppers, onions, salt, white pepper and garlic powder. Accent and water to cover. Cook until potatoes are tender.

Add crushed red pepper, bacon and drippings along with salmon pieces.

Cover and boil for one minute.

Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Mix well, then add to saucepan.

Stir to thicken. Add the white wine. Sprinkle parsley on top of chowder to add colour and flavor. This will serve 10 hungry people.

MULTIPLE FISH CHOWDER Ingredients: 12 lbs fresh fish fillets 2 cups diced raw potatoes 2 Tbsp butter ½ cup sliced carrots 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced 2 cups boiling water ½ cup diced celery 1 tsp salt 2 cups milk ½ tsp pepper Method: Cube the fish. Melt the fat in large saucepan and cook onions and celery until tender.

Add potatoes carrots, water, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes until vegetables are tender. Add fish and cook for another 10 minutes.

Add milk. Re-heat but do not boil.

This recipe can be reheated the next day and still remain good.

MY FAVOURITE CLAM CHOWDER Ingredients: 4 slices bacon ½ tsp salt ½ chopped white onion ¼ tsp celery salt 5 ounce can undrained clams 1 can creamed condensed mushroom soup clam liquid and water to make 1 ¾ cup

ish are one of the most healthy foods you could eat. Growing up in the 30s and 40s, it was a lot cheaper to put food on the table by fishing and hunting than by buying it at the grocery store. Consequently, cottontail rabbits, along with fish fresh from the Thames River, often ended up on our table. My favorite fish is perch, followed by walleye, bass, Arctic char and salmon. I can never get enough of fish chowder. This week we will offer up some great chowder recipes for you to try.

1 soup can of milk 1 cup diced raw potatoes Method: Cook bacon in large saucepan until crisp.

Add onions and cook until tender.

Drain Clams. Reserve liquid and supplement with water to make 1 ¾ cups and then add to saucepan.

Add potatoes, salt and celery salt.

Heat to boiling. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Add the soup and milk. This will serve 4 to 6 people.

FISH SOUFFLE Ingredients: 1 tall tin of salmon 1 ½ cups milk salt and pepper to taste 3 well-beaten egg yolks juice of ½ lemon 3 egg whites 2 cups bread crumbs Method: Separate the salmon in flakes and discard skin and bones.

Add the salt, pepper and lemon juice.

Cook the breadcrumbs in the milk. Cool to lukewarm.

Add salmon and egg yolks, reserving a small amount of the yolk to add to the sauce.

Beat the egg whites until they stand in peaks and add them to the sauce.

Pour into a greased baking dish and stand dish in a pan containing

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Rosemary grilled herring rilled whole fish are easy and delicious and a great break from the classic hotdogs and burgers. Herring are an inexpensive fish, making them a great place to start if you’ve never grilled fish before. They’re also small and easy to maneuver around a grill. Some people find these fish a bit fatty, but coating them with lemon and rosemary cuts through those flavors. Serves 4

❑ 8 whole herring, gutted ❑ 2 tbsp olive oil ❑ 1/2 tsp dried rosemary ❑ Pinch red pepper flakes ❑ Juice of 1/2 lemon ❑ Salt and pepper, to

Toss herring with olive oil, dried rosemary, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes while you heat the grill.

Heat grill to high heat. Place the herring on the grill and cook for 3 minutes. Flip, then cook for an additional 3 minutes. Remove fromt he grill and serve drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil.

irginia Labelle didn’t learn to dive in the Yukon, but that’s where she teaches others how to do it.

“I was entranced by scuba after a ‘See It/Try It’ experience at the old Whitehorse Lions Pool. So on our family vacation to Thailand in 1998, I learned how to dive with Big Blue on Koh Tao,” said Labelle, owner and operator of Yukon Scuba.

Labelle is originally from Montreal and lived in Toronto for three years before deciding she wanted to live somewhere with easier access to the outdoors. She had the opportunity to move North, not knowing anyone, and drove her silver Datsun 710 up the Alaska Highway in 1979.

She has since trained hundreds of divers, both in the pool and in Chadburn Lake. After she learned to dive in Thailand in 1998, it be-

came her passion.

“I love scuba diving, and found that I also loved teaching people to scuba dive,” said Labelle.

“I trained as a divemaster in Belize, then followed up with instructor training in Utila, Honduras later that year. After a year or so, I realized that there was a market here for good quality dive gear at reasonable prices, especially for equipment that you need to try on first, like masks and fins, so I started bringing in some retail goods.

Yukon Scuba has most gear in stock and can obtain the rest for our customers.”

Yukoners can start learning to dive as early as 10 years old.

“There are lots of divers in the Yukon, but most choose to dive in warmer water, preferably with palm trees,” said Labelle. “Training with Yukon Scuba helps people make the most of their personal and vacation time. Divers use Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) online eLearning for their knowledge/theory, and then learn to dive over three

“We go over the safety issues and equipment, then start off in the shallow end of the pool,” said Labelle. “Once everyone is comfortable, we head into the deep end to enjoy that great feeling of weightlessness!”

“The combination of amazing fish and critters like octopus and seahorses, along with beautiful topography and soft corals, is hard to beat. Oh wait, did I mention the manta rays and mola mola (giant sunfish)? For cold water, Browning Pass off the north shore of Vancouver Island is definitely primo. It’s so full of marine life, you don’t know where to look first!”

HERITAGE Conversations Part One

Murray Lundberg - Yukon historian builds online community for sharing stories and building a collective memory

hen it reached 500 people, Murray Lundberg was satisfied.

Then, out of the blue, it jumped to 2,500, then 5,000. Now the “Yukon History and Abandoned Places” Facebook group has more than 11,000 users. And it steadily gains 50 new users each week.

“All of a sudden it went nuts and I have no idea why it happened.

Just boom—I was getting 1,000 new members a week,” said Lundberg, who administrates the page. “If I could reproduce that I could make a million dollars.”

Far from a million. In fact, administrating a monster group like that comes with no paycheque at all, but Lundberg treats it like a full-time job. On average he pours 30 hours each week into the conversations and connections he’s built online. For Lundberg, it’s a labour of love.

“Being able to make connections—that’s what gives me the warm fuzzies,” he said. “For example, I was able to add another name to the Pioneer Cemetery’s lost grave database because a woman saw the Facebook group and got in touch with the name and photograph of her cousin’s daughter’s grave.”

“Facebook is not just for posting pictures of your cat and nasty political memes; it can actually produce some great stuff,” said Lundberg with a laugh.

The group is described as open to “anyone with an interest in any aspect of Yukon history and/or a fascination with abandoned places of all sorts.” Users are invited to post stories or photos, or ask questions.

“It’s a pretty cool collective memory we have going on. If one person says something wrong there are 10 people who say ‘no, that’s not how it happened,’” he said.

“And the really cool part is that it is a conversation—a two-way dialogue, or, in this case, an 11,000way dialogue.”

Lundberg’s passion for history runs in the family. His father had a bug for history. Lundberg caught it in 1958, when he was just eight years old. Using his grandfather’s old large format camera, he started taking photographs of the Cariboo Mining District in south-central B.C. “More than 60 years later I am still doing the same thing, I just have better equipment,” he said.

He found himself drawn to the Yukon. In 1985, with his own plane and private pilot’s licence, he decided to come up and have a look.

He flew all the way to Tuktoyaktuk, then across to Fort Yukon and Fairbanks, and then back down south to Vancouver, stopping in a lot of spots along the way.

“I had always been fascinated by the Yukon, and that flight hooked me,” he said. “It was so incredible—the land, the people and the history.”

“The original plan was to write

a book about that trip called Rowdy Bars of the North, but it turned out that most of my memories were too fuzzy to actually write down—it was that kind of trip. It was such a hoot.”

A few years later he saw a listing in the Vancouver newspaper advertising for tour-bus drivers in Whitehorse. He started driving 10-to 20-day tours of Yukon and Alaska. On these tours, he was expected to be the expert on the places they visited.

“All at once I was both a student and a teacher of Yukon history,” he said. “I had a couple of pretty intense years of just cramming and cramming and cramming—I would be driving along with index cards with information tucked under my hip.”

He stayed with the job for 23 years because he loved it.

“It got me to some amazing places and I got to meet a lot of incredible people,” he said. “It was a constant learning experience.

Each time it would be different.

I’ve driven up the Dempster Highway and had a white wolf running beside the bus.”

Though he officially retired in 2008, he still leads one special tour group each year during the Yukon Quest International Dog Sled Race.

In 1996, Lundberg wrote his first book, Fractured Veins and Broken Dreams: Montana Mountain and the Windy Arm Stampede. It was an account of the silver mines above Carcross, where he was living at the time.

“It started off when I came across the stone houses on Montana Mountain and no one really knew why they were there. I thought, I have to find out.”

A year later, he started his website, Yukon and Alaska History, which expanded into his ExploreYukon site, still online today.

“In those days there was no good Yukon history online, so I thought I would do it,” he said. “I look back on the screenshots now and it was pretty basic, but it did what it needed to do.”

Over the years, he’s also collected his own archive of Yukon history books and documents. He has 107 books on the Alaska Highway alone.

Currently, Lundberg is working on a second edition of his first book, Fractured Veins and Broken Dreams, and hopes to have a new

Sid’s Treasures with Teresa Vander Meer-Chassé

Teddy bear time I

t was about 7 a.m. when Bordertown Garage and Museum started waking up for its already lively season. Sid, the owner and curator, was up and about prepping his backyard museum for more visitors in June. It was Sid’s birthday on May 28. He’s now 82 years young and still the most energetic person we all know and love. That day, Sid was cleaning and reorganizing cabinets.

In the process, he rediscovered some of the smaller items in his collection, including a shaving kit and war propaganda matchboxes. But then Sid grabbed a very old, very worn teddy bear.

“I don’t know it’s full history but I found it in an old trunk. It must be from the early 1900s,” said Sid, carrying the teddy. “Everything is homemade. Someone’s pride and joy.” Sid set the teddy bear down on his coffee table so we could have a better look at the toy.

“From the Depression era.

I found it at a friend’s farm in Alberta, so it must have belonged to a child from around there.

You see the scraps of cloth they used to make it?” It’s amazing that this bear has survived so long and remains intact. It was once fuzzy, but has now lost much of

the toy is a mix of machine and hand-sewn work. One foot points forward while the other veers to the left. It was clear to us that this toy was very special to someone.

History tells us teddy bears get their name from former United States President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. The term originally derived from a political cartoon published in the Washington Post in 1902. It depicted President Roosevelt on a hunting trip, refusing to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree. Stuffed toy bears have been called teddy bears ever since.

I asked Sid if he had anything like this teddy when he was a child. He scoffed.

“No, we had no toys, just blocks of wood. There was nothing then, nothing to make a teddy bear from either.” I believe this teddy bear found where it was meant to be, in the hands of a man who never had a toy growing up.

The older we get, the more we reminisce about the little things from our childhood. I, myself, have a stuffed mouse that will forever be a part of my life. What’s your teddy bear?

ou’d be forgiven for thinking Triniti Technology only sells cell phone cases.

Sylvio Lin, general manager for the Whitehorse-based company, knows that’s what it looks like from the outside.

“Most people think we just sell electronics,” said Lin. “They have no idea what else we do in terms of repair and servicing.”

Beyond the cell accessories, mousepads and monitors available at Triniti’s Main Street storefront location, there’s a lot of behindthe-scenes action that extends from the Yukon to cities across North America.

Triniti is a national contractor for a lot of Outside companies that want hands and eyes and ears in the North, said Lin. Triniti oversees technologies including the self-checkout at the Superstore.

It also works with Bell, Telus and Moneris, and acts as a service provider for Dell, Lenovo and HP. It also works with Yukon Energy and governments, doing everything from selling the products to providing the ongoing servicing.

Lin and his business partner, Johnny Mak, didn’t have all that in mind when they started the company under a different name around 2014. In fact, in 2013, Lin was living in Vancouver, working for Bell’s corporate sales division.

“I came back (to the Yukon) in October of 2013 to help Ice Wireless and Polarcom get business and cell mobility services going,” he said.

At the same time, Mak was leaving his job working in corporate electronics and business. Both born-and-raised Yukoners, they started talking about doing something that would allow them to

“We’ve known each other since we were kids,” Lin said. “Our parents immigrated here and were friends before we were born. He’s basically like a brother to me … we were wanting to work locally versus always travelling for work and we talked about building something. We talked about what ideals do we have together to grow a business?”

In August of 2014, Lin said the pair landed on a strategy and launched their own IT management and consulting company.

Mak took on the business development side, while Lin focussed on the relationships. Through that company, the pair continued to manage and take care of service and sales for Ice and Polarcom until 2015/16.

“Which is when we started Triniti Tech.”

Lin said they dealt mostly with products, hardware and software for cell phones, windows programs and laptops. As the company developed though, it identified a market for cell boosters and drones. Lin and Mak kept their eyes open, not just for what people wanted at the moment,

but for what they’d want in the future.

Still, Lin said neither of them knew, in the beginning, how widespread the company’s work would be. He certainly didn’t expect to be working with companies all over the continent. And they weren’t, at first.

“It was funny. We started calling and trying to build a base. A lot of people said they didn’t even know where we were,” said Lin. “Now they’re calling us … they’re intrigued. People are often surprised and say they want to come here.”

Now, Triniti employs about 17 Yukoners. Lin said it’s been satisfying to see the company grow that way. He said the learning process is ongoing, but he and Mak are excited to keep moving forward to meet the tech needs of Yukoners.

Wasting Away in Geezerville with Ken Bolton

P and Q can make for some perky Saturday hookups T

he last entry in this space provided a platform for a more-or-less true tale of undeserved punishment recalled (and still resented) from the mists of time.

That column began with an innocent reference to the ancient wisdom about exercising care when using the letters ‘P’ or ‘Q’.

While these are both perfectly serviceable, wellestablished members of the English alphabet, the fact remains that neither of them breaks any records when it comes to introducing words.

True, the letter ‘P’ occupies a full 129 pages in my Concise Oxford Dictionary, but it pales in comparison to its near neighbour, ‘S,’ which weighs in at a respectable 211 pages.

Mind you, it’s still miles ahead of poor old ‘Q’, with its skimpy page count of just 11, a full page shy of the humble ‘J.’ Only ‘X,’ ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ fare more poorly.

How can I put this without provoking consternation across the land? The sad reality is that neither ‘P’ nor ‘Q’ is a particularly compelling letter in its own right.

They’re sort of the alphabetical equivalent of Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. Everybody knows they are there, but no one is really sure what they do.

Indeed, the only thing we know about ‘Q’ is that it cannot stand without the letter ‘U’ propping it up. Except in the capital of Nunavut, where anything goes, apparently.

Yet get these two under-appreciated letters together for a drink or two on a Saturday night and they are likely to consummate a couple of interesting verbal hookups.

Ken piques our interest with more quips verb meaning to “search narrowly” for something. More broadly, it refers to the extra endowments the lord of a manor might receive beyond his customary revenue.

That might justify quaffing a celebratory pint this Saturday night. Please remember to leave a perq for the server.

Admit it, “propinquity” is a pretty racy way of implying that things may be a bit too close for comfort. Like first cousins exchanging wedding vows, for example.

Score one each for ‘P’ and ‘Q.’ Then there is the word used to describe the entitlements to which the entitled consider themselves entitled.

In everyday parlance (and far too often in print journalism), these are known as the “perks” of office—the ancillary benefits that come with the job.

Within my lifetime, I fear, readers and writers alike may well lose sight of the fact that the short form for such incidental emoluments should be spelled “perqs” instead of “perks.”

Carmen Gustafson is preparing for her fourth Yukon River Quest at the end of the month

armen Gustafson is gearing up for her fourth Yukon River Quest. For those who are fond of stats, that means that by this year’s Canada Day long weekend she will have raced 2,860 km between Whitehorse and Dawson City. To the casual observer this probably sounds crazy, especially when you consider that those paddlers who win the 715 km race average 45 hours of continuous paddling, while some of the recreational teams may take more than 70 hours to finish. If you wondered why they do it, you wouldn’t be alone.

“A lot of people have this af-

fliction,” said Gustafson. “There’s always something you could do better or differently that keeps drawing you back in. Last year, as I was arriving in Carmacks, I was convinced I never had to do the race again, but by the time I reached Dawson my mind had completely shifted and I knew I had to do the race again.

“My first year I thought this was going to be a one-off. Achieve this amazing goal and then move on to the next thing. The second year it was going to be a two-off, then it was going to be a three-off, and then it was that I was never going to paddle back-to-back years, but the race keeps drawing you back in and causing you to eat

For her first two races, Gustafson paddled as part of a voyager team, captaining the second year.

Last year she paddled the race solo. This year she is captaining a women’s C4 (four-person canoe).

“This is the first year that there is a women’s C4 category,” she said. “So we want to be competitive and push each other. After all, the team that wins the category this year will get to set a course record.”

Gustafson said that every race is unique and has its own character, surprises and unexpected events.

“My first year we took a swim at Five Finger Rapids and had a huge lightning storm, which is when I learned I am completely terrified of lightning. My second year there was a fire near Fort Selkirk and utterly terrible weather. My third year became a huge learning experience and an opportunity to conquer my fears. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the race throws at us this year.”

She’s also looking forward to paddling at 3 a.m.

“There’s something that happens on the river,” she said. “You have nothing to do but paddle, so you end up shutting your brain off and you really start experiencing your surroundings. It’s an experience you don’t get anywhere else.

I’ve yet to find anyone who wants to haul themselves out of bed to paddle at that time of day outside of the race.”

Gustafson also highlighted just how special and unique the Yukon River Quest is.

“Yes, it’s a competitive race, but it’s not about conquering the river or crushing your competition,” she said. “There’s a lot of interdependence. You’re racing people, but you’re also looking out for their well-being; you’re trying to travel quickly, but you need to work with the river; you’re paddling through the night

and battling the elements, but you need a reprieve from the sun; you’re there as individuals, but also together. The race is really its own ecosystem.”

She has a few words of wisdom for this year’s race virgins, or anyone else considering stepping up to take on the world’s longest paddling race in future—overprepare.

“Talk to everyone you can, read everything you can. You’ll get conflicting advice. Take it all in and work out what works for you. Oh and, just keep paddling!”

Grey Matters with Deborah McNevin

Confessions of an exercise hater M

y inner brat just won’t listen.

Some people are blessed with an inner prince or princess, but I am saddled with a brat, verging on a rebel. The adult me tells the inner brat about the benefits and merits of exercise.

“I have COPD,” I tell her. “And exercise is critical to maintaining my health.”

“Nope,” she says stubbornly.

I go on. “Exercise may combat type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, high blood pressure, and on and on. It also helps prevent sarcopenia–or frailty–that can hit we non-exercisers pretty hard in later years.”

Still a stubborn nope.

I try to entice her with an exercise-promoting video that asks what you will do with the other 23.5 hours of your day after you finish your 30 recommended minutes of tedium. “See? Only a half hour!”

But the inner brat also reads and, unfortunately, the media is now full of headlines that this kind of exercising cannot undo the damage of hours of slothful sitting or, as she likes to call it, thinking time.

I have been trying to think about why she hates exercise so much. Maybe it’s the same kind of rebellion as I feel when people tell me I should do something. Of all the finger-wagging words in English, “should” is the worst. (I would say it should be outlawed, but that would definitely fall into the ironic category.)

We do have some experience with exercise. I like walking.

That’s great when it is above -20 with no wind and the sidewalks are not piled high with ice and snow. It’s also great when “eau de smoke” is not the overwhelming fragrance in the outdoor air, whether from cigarettes or im-

properly burning wood stoves.

Please don’t tell me about the Canada Games Centre walking circle. It’s an option, I guess, if you don’t mind spending money for clock-watching boredom. I’m with my inner brat on that one!

I took a Nordic walking course several years ago. The classes were wonderful but I found it embarrassing to watch some spry 80-year-old zoom past me, walk-

ing sticks a-blazing, up hills that make me dizzy just to look at.

The walks were so long for my arthritic joints that I could have spent weeks recovering. (“More thinking time,” says the brat).

Wii Fit or similar games appealed to both of us at first.

I enjoyed bowling and tennis games, but they should come with a warning. I played them so much–not just once!–that I could

not lift my arms for days afterwards, resulting in more of the aforementioned thinking time.

I love dancing to old time rock and roll, but I get tired of the dishes rattling in the cupboards, stemware getting cracks and the cats running from me in terror, all due to the mini-earthquake that can result from my thumping.

There is also a risk I could injure myself as I dance with the blinds down–out of deference to the neighbourhood.

We don’t actually mind lifting light weights at home while watching something excitementfree. (Hockey is out, as I can come perilously close to throwing the handiest thing at the TV when viewing a stupid referee call or fight. Weights can inflict lots of damage!)

Definitely I need to do more.

I’m still looking for the trick that will make the inner brat get out of my way, and help her get motivated so that I turn some of that “thinking time” into good, hearty exercise. (She does respond to bribes of anything with whipped cream, but that kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?)

In the meantime, I will try to avoid the “should” trap of exercising and focus on the fun or, at least, the non-tedious parts. So, do you hear that, brat? On we go!
