ell after many of her peers have settled into retirement, Adeline Webber continues to put in long hours volunteering as Vice President of the Whitehorse Aboriginal Women’s Circle, an organization she founded after a friend mentioned that she would need a retirement project. Sixteen years later, along with a strong and resilient board of directors, and two staffers Winnie Peterson and Sarah Cardinal, the non-profit organization’s mission is to provide access to healing and learning through culturally rich programs and to influence positive change in the lives of Whitehorse’s Aboriginal women.

A member of the Teslin Tlingit First Nation, Webber and her siblings were sent to residential school at young ages, with brothers going to different communities, while the sisters remained together at the Whitehorse Baptism Mission School.

Over the years, survivors of the residential school system would gather together for healing and connection and the conversation would often turn to the hope that someone would gather stories and photographs from their shared experience.

This need was identified by the women’s circle and they took on the publication of Finding Our Faces, an over 100-page book of photos and stories documenting the residential school system in Whitehorse.

Webber says it documents her history for her own children and grandchildren, and has become a resource for Yukon’s grade five education curriculum. It’s also no coincidence that Webber is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, for her work in implementing Yukon land claims and Final Agreements, as well as advocating for the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The women’s circle began as a way to provide a voice, cultural support, and programming for urban First Nations women living away from their home and communities, but over the years it has grown to partner with multiple organizations. They served as cochair of the Yukon Advisory Council for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), part of a National Inquiry that recently released its Final Report. Bolstering sisterhood ... cont’d Jerry Soltani attended the MMIWG National Inquiry closing ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec, and the group is now working with the Liard Aboriginal Women’s Society and Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council to host a closing ceremony for local families.

The group’s ongoing goal is to continue to build membership, currently 37, by removing barriers to access to their programming, so that they can serve a broader scope of ages and walks of life. Childcare and meals are often provided for participants free of charge. They also keep an eye towards the future with their staff capacity building initiative and their dream of opening a centre where Aboriginal women can connect, create and learn together. Recent events hosted by the Whitehorse Aboriginal Women’s Circle include workshops on drummaking, quilling and sewing, and hosting speakers on topics like resilience, healing and reconciliation.

Board member Jayla RousseauThomas said “It is an honour and privilege to drive meaningful, low barrier cultural programming, including projects to honour our missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.”

Fish management is an everchanging science. With climate change at hand, it will present many unanswered questions about the future of fishing. Even before climate change though, environmental conditions never remained static. Enter the world of an everexpanding human population, the lack of watershed protection versus domestic and industrial growth, commercial fishing and increased pollution, and environmental research, with its lack of sufficient scientific professionals, concludes that fisheries are in trouble.

There is a growing battle between the sports fishermen and

the commercial fishermen. (That includes netting for personal use.)

The warming of our oceans will lead to decreases in certain fish populations. Growing human numbers are leading to an increased demand for fish at the store level. Decreasing fish numbers mean there is a question around whether there will be sufficient fish populations to maintain profitable commercial fishing, so the controversy between commercial fishing and sports fishing continues. We must have commercial fishing to satisfy food demands.

On the other hand, sports fishing brings tourists into communities and stores, lodges and outfits that rely on tourism. On one side, sports fishing regulations stipulate what size fish you can keep and

what size fish has to be released.

I would suggest that commercial fishing and self-reliance netting for personal use are both being abused in terms of overall numbers as well as fish size. You can put as many regulations in the books as you want, but if you don’t have the personnel to enforce them, the regulations are not worth the paper they are written on. In the past five years, more federal fishery management offices have been closed at the federal level. In provinces and territories, there aren’t enough enforcement officers to monitor the growing population involved both in sport, tourism and commercial fishing. cont’d on page 5 ...

FORESTRY MANAGEMENT AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT ARE ONE

In many provinces and territories, forest management and wildlife management are two separate divisions, yet a productive fishery depends on what happens in forest management. Forestry management is responsible for roads and trails not infringing on waterways such as streams, marshes and watersheds— small streams that feed the lakes and rivers that protect and feed the fishery.

FISHING—IMPORTANT TO TOURISM

Fishing is important to tourism. Fishing attracts people. To bear this out, look at the number of fishermen who leave Whitehorse to go to Haines, Alaska, in the spring, early summer and fall.

Sports stores also benefit, as do accommodations, the food industry, gas stations and, of course, the government, which sells fishing licenses. When you compare fishing to all other activities, fishing is a real family affair. You can’t lose when you go fishing, regardless of whether or not you catch a fish. The reward is that you had the pleasure of going fishing. There is no loser.

REWARDED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SPORT

Personally, I consider myself blessed. I have fished the shores of New Brunswick, the shores of the Pacific, the Arctic, sunny Florida and everything in between.

I credit to my wife, who will jump to go at the very mention of fishing, and to my former job

as a conservation officer. There, I worked on the science and research side of things, dealing with upland birds and waterfowl.

One such study was the netting and tagging of American Eel just below the dam in Cornwall, Ontario. Generally, when I was detailed to a fishery study, I worked with a former student who had just finished university and taken a biologist’s job with the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Department.

The one in question was from Michigan State University. He had never seen an American Eel, other than in a picture. He had never handled such a slimy creature.

When we drove the boat in under the power dam, the waters were swirling with eel. He would reach in with a net and lift the eel to me. I would tag and measure it.

He would record the information and then release the eel back into the waters of the St. Lawrence River.

-- Murray Martin One day at lunch, I took the biologist on a tour downriver. We came upon a dead horse floating in the water. It was bloated, so I knew its insides were loaded with eel. I bounced the bow off the large bloated stomach a couple times and we watched as eels came out of its mouth and rear end. Of course, the eel were

Back upriver, we drove the boat in and under the dam. Now he had his life jacket on for the first time.

By mid-afternoon, they had started to release more water through the channel we were working in.

Often, the boat jerked ahead. The bottom of it was covered with the slippery slime of eels. As my colleague reached over with the net for more eel, the boat bounced and he went overboard. I swear, as the Lord be my judge, no man should have been capable of getting back into that boat without help, but, within seconds, he was aboard, standing there, frantically brushing his clothes down, no doubt with the memory of that bloated horse we had seen earlier.

LIMNOLOGY

If you want to improve on your fishing success, I suggest picking up a book on the science of limnology. Limnology is a science on the behavior of lakes and rivers, including their varied temperature and physical changes. This is especially useful in the changing warm and cold seasons we experience here in the North. If you are a wise fisherman, you will know that there is an optimal temperature for each species of fish. A basic understanding of limnology will definitely enhance your dinner plate.

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition.

Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

Re-visiting the Chilkoot Trail

T

he 53-kilometre Chilkoot Trail starts in Dyea, Alaska, at sea level and in full rain forest.

There is lush vegetation, dense, fragrant canopy, moss of fairy tale proportions and lots of climbing on steps hammered into the earth by the US Trail Service. It ends at Bennett Lake, British Columbia, the water conduit to the gold fields of Dawson City. This is where it all started in 1898 for the Klondike Gold Rush, as noted by a commemorative plaque at the trailhead.

I first hiked the Chilkoot in 1978 and have continued to walk it most years since. Having it in my own backyard means I’ve been able to spend some time every year, for more than 40 years, in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

What makes the Chilkoot challenging is that each climb over the pass can be very different. It truly is a unique experience each time one walks it. In June 2019, I traversed the slippery, soft snow in full whiteout conditions. In August 2018, we were in water up to our knees through the flood zone of the cresting Taiya River and hot, hot, hot over the top. A lot has changed since then, but a lot has remained the same as well.

bridges, in the raised boardwalks through the Beaver Ponds and in the newly constructed shelters at the campsites.

Instead of the old, higher camp, close to the summit, Sheep Camp is now lower down and boasts a huge open-air shelter that’s able to accommodate 50. There’s also a new (as of 2019) log cabin to warm hikers in bad weather. Two solid wall tent cook shelters also contribute to the infrastructure and there’s also up-to-date solar power at the US warden tents.

Through the 1980s and into the 90s, we would watch for a highpressure system and go. Now, one must plan ahead and register with Parks Canada in Whitehorse, or try being one of 10 daily ‘walk on’ hikers at the Skagway Trail Centre.

Either way, you pay for your reservation on the Canadian side. The US side has always been free. The new limit is 50 total hikers a day.

The US outhouses have always supplied toilet paper, while you must bring your own on the Canadian side.

The approach to the Scales/ Golden Stairway remains a challenge. A dawn start out of Sheep Camp takes one through dense, dark forested paths that steadily climb. Eventually, one breaks through the trees and into the alpine. The view will take your breath away, either for fear of what’s to come, or awe at the wide expanse of rock and the deafening Taiya River. It’s a long climb up to the Scales, which have been described as “one of the most wretched spots on the trail.” There’s a 45-degree

This boardwalk will get you through the Beaver Ponds climb over the big boulders that make up the Golden Stairs and then you continue through the steep, narrow pass that makes for a final ascent. The path is strewn with remarkable Gold Rush artifacts. It also marks 1,000 M of ascent since Dyea.

The Canadian flag has flown proudly to mark the entry into Canada. Sadly, on my recent June trip, it wasn’t present. Hopefully it will be again. This is the spot where the North-West Mounted Police weighed and scrutinized those coming through. Now there’s a small warming shelter for hikers, a new warden’s cabin and an outhouse with one of the best views in all of Canada.

Sharing a bar of chocolate after reaching the summit is still a nearreligious experience.

There are still sheep and goats at the top, but you must really look for them.

The section beyond the summit has always been an active avalanche zone. Care must be taken while travelling. Don’t stop for picnic lunches. Keep walking. There are many snow fields, rock and sometimes icy side hills with many stream crossings on the descent to brilliant blue Crater Lake.

The US side tells you to spit into the river while brushing your teeth, while the Canadian wardens request that hikers use the grey water pits.

Today, one must camp only in designated areas. In the early days, you could venture off the trail, especially around Happy Camp to find a pristine meadow with soft moss for a pillow and crown sparrows to lull you to a well-deserved sleep. Records are still made for length of time spent sleeping in the tent after the hard summit day. The wind still howls through the valley of Happy Camp.

Metal bear-proof lockers are now provided at each camping spot, replacing the bear poles of

days past, and the corresponding evening entertainment of slinging sacks of food over them.

Snow, sleet, hail, thunderstorms and rain can all occur on the trail.

It’s still critical to have good rain gear and warm clothing, as hypothermia is a very real threat.

Pack out whatever you pack in.

This hasn’t changed.

You must wear a permit tag and carry your passport with you. In the old days, who knew who came into Canada via the Chilkoot Trail?

One now books a train ticket from Bennett out to Fraser, Carcross, or Skagway, but hikers are still shunted into their own segregated rail car. I guess we are all a bit stinky from five days hiking and don’t dare offend the higher-class clientele!

The train still goes so slow that one can get off the front and have a picnic lunch and still grab the last car of the White Pass Yukon Route.

The Chilkoot Trail is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth.

If you haven’t hiked it in awhile, consider booking it. If you have never hiked it, you will be challenged, delighted, amazed and maybe, like me, want to walk it again year after year after year.

T

he Klondike Visitors Association (KVA) and the Writers’ Trust of Canada have announced the theme for the annual Authors on Eighth Writing Contest.

Between June 4 and July 21, interested contestants are encouraged to write a piece of prose or poetry that is inspired by northern weather. “The contest ‌ invites participants to be inspired by the writings of Pierre Berton, Robert Service, Jack London and Dick North, all authors who themselves have allowed the North to influence their writings. Prizes include real Klondike gold nuggets!â€?

Most pieces will also be published in the Klondike Sun, Dawson City’s bi-weekly newspaper.

In 2017, the contest had 29 entries. in 2018, it drew 30. Many were from locals or other Yukoners, but there were also lots from across Canada and the USA, as well as New Zealand. The winners were announced during the Authors on Eighth walking tour that is part of the Discovery Week events here during the third week in August. “From the blazing midnight sun, to a frosty winter’s day, weather has been a topic in northern writing since the dawn of Gold Rush literacy. Authors on Eighth celebrates those historical writings while also showcasing current talented writers from around the world,� said Paul Robitaille, mar-

keting and events manager for the KVA. Pieces of writing can be submitted by sending an email to KVA@dawson.net.

Submissions should include an attached word document of the work, as well as the writer’s name, pen name (if applicable), address and phone number. No names or addresses should be within the document itself, as this will insure unbiased judging.

Terry Hynes of Grand Forks, B.C., and David Thompson of Whitehorse, are two writers who have entered the contest nearly every year. They have been winners in both the poetry and prose categories and have subsequently published books containing some of their entries, along with other work. “The Yukon and the Dawson region especially, have so much colourful history of which to write about,� said Hynes, who has visited the area a number of times since 1972. “I grew up reading all three authors and got introduced to Dick North in my later years, but I now have most of his books. “It’s a genre in which I enjoy spinning yarns. The simple balladtype rhymes that a lot of people still enjoy reading and are so much fun to write in. “Kudos to the KVA and all for keeping it going year after year.

It’s one of the few venues that appreciate and provide a platform for this style of writing.�

Thompson has written two books of humorous Klondike-inspired historical fiction since he first submitted and is currently working on two more. “The Authors on Eighth contest gave me a tremendous boost and encouraged me in my writing. “I’m not exaggerating when I say I never won anything in my life. When I won the contest, I could hardly believe it. My wife cried. “I’ve always had an affinity for the history and people of Dawson City. We lived there for about three years until 1975. I had a good glimpse of a passing era. “The contest appeals to me because it is unique, I believe it is prestigious to win and it reflects the spirit of the Klondike, which I support wholeheartedly. “Where else can you visit Robert Service and Jack London’s cabins, write a poem or story in their honour, and have a chance to win a gold nugget? Only in the Klondike, I say.�

After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years.

ne morning in the mid 1980s, a pilot named Fred came to my house. Since I had only met him on a few occasions at the coffee shop, I wondered why he had come to see me. After pleasantries, he explained that he had to fly to Sachs Harbour, but he had a problem.

“What’s the problem?” I asked.

He informed me that because he was flying hospital staff on a Twin Otter, the hospital required him to have a co-pilot. The problem was his boss was out of town, so he didn’t have one available. I figured out where this conversation was headed.

“I don’t know how to fly a plane,” I said.

“You don’t have to know anything,” he said. I was super leery of the whole situation, but I finally agreed to go on the trip with him.

Still, I told Fred a couple more times that I didn’t know anything

Carey had a lone co-piloting experience on a Twin Otter about airplanes, so he would have to be careful and make sure that I didn’t screw this up for him. Fred was loosey-goosey and assured me everything would go smoothly.

When I got to the Inuvik airport, Fred already had the Twin Otter parked in front of the terminal. We got the passengers loaded and got settled into the cockpit while he fired up the engines. As soon as my headset was on, Fred remarked, “now we can talk and nobody can hear what the f#$k we’re saying.

Grab that checklist and start reading it to me.”

As I read each item on the list, Fred gave me a verbal response. I guess we looked half legit. He got the old girl out to the end of the runway and gunned the engines.

We used less than half the runway to get airborne. We stayed that way for about five minutes. Then I noticed Fred looking at his gauges and tapping on them.

“Is there a problem?” I asked.

“My engine gauges have quit, but I think I know what the problem is,” he said. We flew on a while longer and then Fred suddenly dropped the panel above his head and began fiddling with the wires and connectors. He put the panel back in place, with no response from the gauges. Fred’s actions did not go unnoticed by some of the passengers. One of them came up to the cockpit and talked to Fred.

“I’m a private pilot. Is everything okay?” Fred told the pilot about the gauges and assured him that he knew how to deal with the problem.

As soon as we had trouble with the gauges, I started to weigh our options. We could have a two-and-

a-half-hour flight over the Beaufort Sea at -25, or we could turn around and be back in Inuvik in 15 minutes. Turning back never entered Fred’s mind. I soon discovered that flying was tiresome, just like driving. Finally, the tiresome routine ended just before Sachs Harbor.

“We got hellish crosswinds on the runway and I want you to be ready to reef on the right side of the steering yoke as soon as we land,” Fred said through the headset. He was right. It was a grey, dirty day with little visibility. The crosswinds slammed into the side of the plane.

After landing, a suburban from the nursing station whisked the passengers into town. We had to wait in the airport for two-and-ahalf hours before a woman from the nursing station showed up to tell us they were not going to be ready for the return flight for a couple more hours. Fred unloaded on her. “Do you mean you are going to leave us sitting in this terminal with nothing to drink or eat?” He asked. “Oh, you can come to the nursing station with me,” she said.

The Sachs Harbor nursing station had a staff dining room with one table that could seat 10 or 12 people. They promptly served us supper. I was seated at the table across from a spunky nurse, who was also one of my passengers. Little Miss Spunky knew the aviation lingo much better than me.

“So, how long have you been in the right seat?” she asked. So, that’s what a co-pilot’s seat is called, I thought.

“Oh, a while,” I said. I then glanced at Fred who was sitting beside me and appeared to not

have a worry in the world. With a big smile on his face, Fred looked at Nurse Spunky.

“He’s my best co-pilot,” he said. That took the pressure off me. An hour or so after supper we boarded the Otter for the return trip to Inuvik.

The crosswinds had died down and it was a smooth ride getting airborne. We were up to our flying height for some time when Fred told me to look for a small lever down by my right foot. In the dark, I searched and found the lever. “What do you want me to do?” I asked. “Flip it up,” he said. I flipped the lever up. “What does that do?” I asked. “It’s getting cold up here and that lever switches the heat from the back of the plane to the front,” he said. “Won’t the passengers get cold?” I asked. “F#$k em, let them freeze,” he said.

Flying back to Inuvik in the dark with the engine gauges still not working made me realize the job was not much more than being a glorified bus driver.

After landing back at the Inuvik airport, I helped the passengers get their gear off the Otter. As I was leaving the plane, a nurse behind me asked if I could fly her to Arctic Red the next day.

“You bet,” I said.

As we went our separate ways, I thought, my flying days were over.

Besides, I should not have been flying airplanes anyways. I was a pessimist.

t was in 2011 that the first ever Adäka Cultural Festival was held on the waterfront outside the Old Fire Hall. The festival has grown exponentially since then and is now recognized as the biggest Indigenous music, arts and culture festival in the North.

The festival’s mission is to showcase and celebrate the Yukon’s unique First Nations arts and culture while providing a space for emerging and established artists to develop their craft and foster their talents.

This year, festival attendees are in for several treats, including a headline performance by worldrenowned Ottawa electronic duo, A Tribe Called Red. The Yukon Arts Centre will co-present the group with the Adäka Cultural Festival on July 3 at the festival’s Electric Pow Wow. A Tribe Called Red will be joined by two Yukon opening acts, the Dakhká Khwáan Dan-

The Adäka Cultural Festival is an opportunity for established and emerging First Nations artists to showcase and foster their talents cers featuring DJ Dash, and youth electronic artist Jeremy Parkin.

Aside from A Tribe Called Red, the festival’s nearly weeklong run is packed with other performances, visual arts showcases, workshops and even children’s programming.

According to Katie Johnson, Adäka co-founder, director of arts and festival producer, more than 150 Indigenous artists will participate in the festival. Johnson said there are artists coming from every community in the Yukon, as well as several places in the Northwest Territories and across Canada.

The festival programming also includes talks from elders and a variety of different traditional pursuits, such as moose tanning demonstrations.

The word “Adäka” is Southern Tutchone for “coming into the light.” The Adäka Cultural Festival aims to shine a light on the diverse population of First Nations artists in and outside of the Yukon. Each

year, a different theme is used to achieve this. This year’s theme of “From the Land” will focus on land and language. Through art, song and storytelling, the festival will celebrate and raise awareness of First Nations languages and also the importance of the land on which we live.

“The intent is really to honour our languages and communities,” said Johnson. “We want to encourage young people to speak and sing in our languages.”

While the festival is a celebration of First Nations arts, culture and language, it is also being used to promote awareness and action on current issues, such as missing and murdered Indigenous women, according to Johnson.

“Using the festival as a platform, we still continue the work in strengthening our community,”

she said.

With so much going on this year and so much work put into organizing such a big event, it’s clear that the festival has come a long way in its nine years. The 2019 edition is sure to attract even more attention, meaning the festival can only grow bigger and become more recognized from here on.

“It’s definitely grown since I’ve been involved,” said Johnson. “I think it’s going to grow into an international Indigenous festival.”

ike are very common, not difficult to catch and are a delicious mild-flavoured fish. Their one big negative is that they have more bones than other fish, with those “Y” bones in a line along the thickest part of the fillet. The method to remove these bones is pretty straightforward and can be found on Google. With these bones removed along with the rib bones, you are left with a totally boneless fillet from which a 28- to 30-inch pike will feed two people and both sides will feed four.

Pike can be baked, fried, smoked, poached or prepared by any other method you can come up with. There are numerous fish coatings in shakers to be sprinkled on, or more powdery coatings that can be applied by shaking the fish and coating in a ziplock. Either way, the fish is cooked in a shallow amount of lard or oil in a fry pan. Lard is actually better because it will cook at a higher temperature than an oil. These coated fillets can also be baked in a pan

or barbecued on a perforated tinfoil sheet. Either way, they do not need to be turned over to cook through.

Pike can also be battered and deep-fried to a golden, crispy finish. Batter recipes are readily available, to make yourself or buy to prepare. Either method is simple. A very easy batter is as simple as a basic bannock mix made with a little more liquid for the right consistency. These dipped pieces are rolled over with a fork or spatula in the hot lard or oil. Experience will tell you when they are done, but usually they are ready to eat when the batter crust is golden in colour.

Pike fillets, pieces or chunks are delicious with a brushed-on coating of mild (or to your taste) salsa and then broiled or barbecued for eight to 12 minutes, depending on temperature.

Chunks or pieces can also be immersed in a zesty Italian salad dressing for half an hour or so, then broiled or barbecued and served stabbed with toothpicks as

an appetizer. Any salad dressing that you enjoy will work.

Pike are often overlooked, as smoked fish, and are delicious.

Any brine recipe will work, and you will learn from each time. Research and follow basic smoking routines, especially air-drying before putting the fish in the smoker.

Fish are especially vulnerable to freezer burn, if not packaged well. Ziplocks, with all the air squeezed out, will work in the short-term, but investing in and using a vacuum sealer will keep your fish fresher for a much longer time.

METHOD

1 garlic, Whisk

together buttermilk, black pepper, sugar, oregano, salt and red pepper flakes. Place chicken breasts in the buttermilk mixture. While they are in the mixture, poke them all over with a fork. Make sure the chicken breasts are fully submerged and place in the fridge for at least an hour, up to overnight.

2 Place the quartered carrots on Set oven at 400 degrees F.

M

y wife and I were in Mazatlán, Mexico earlier this year. The timing of the sunrise and sunset got me thinking about the differences in the Yukon and what effects this might have on people. In Mazatlán, the length of the day on the summer solstice is just over 13.5 hours, while on the winter solstice, it lasts 10.75 hours. This is a swing of only 2.75 hours and that gap closes the closer you get to the equator. In Nairobi, Kenya, the hours of daylight between June and December vary by only eight minutes!

But we live in the Yukon and deal with extreme differences in the amount of sunlight we get.

At the summer solstice on June 21, we experience over 19 hours of potential daylight, compared to only slightly over 5.5 hours on the winter solstice. That’s a difference of roughly 13.5 hours over six months!

What effect can this have on us? What does the science say?

What do Yukoners say? I decided to find out.

The potential impact the lack of sunlight can have on mental health (ie: seasonal affective disorder) is well-known. The potential physical effects are less widely known.

The UV rays in sunlight trigger a photosynthetic process in the skin

that produces vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for bone health and for keeping the immune system going strong. Severe deficiency of vitamin D can trigger ailments such as rickets, a weakening of the bones that can cause skeletal deformities and dental issues. One recent study even associated vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

But what about the lack of darkness around the summer solstice?

People complain much less about the lack of darkness in the summer than they complain about the lack of light in the winter, which is understandable. The lack of darkness does not inhibit our ability to walk in the woods well into the evening or read a book by the window before breakfast. Put simply, darkness is usually considered heavy and bleak, while sunshine is light and freeing.

But is it all sunshine and light?

Circadian rhythms are physical and mental changes that mainly correspond to a 24-hour cycle. Most people experience major disruptions in circadian rhythms in the form of jetlag. It’s not so much the adjustment to earlier or later waking times that cause the headaches and mental fog and indigestion, but the whole body’s adjust-

PHOTOS: Hank Moorlag ment to different cycles of light and corresponding rhythms for internal body temperature, hormone release and digestion. In the northern summers, the juxtaposition of drastic seasonal shifts and maintenance of the same old daily habits leaves northerners at risk of being perpetually jetlagged.

So what impact do the extremes of sunlight and darkness have on Yukoners? I thought I would get some sense of it by doing a quick survey. I make no claim that this survey is representative of Yukoners, as the sample size was very small and probably not statistically valid. While the results were not surprising, it was informative.

I asked six questions:

3) If the darkness bothers you, does it bother you a little or a lot? If it is a lot, describe in what way. Of those who found it bothersome, 63 per cent indicated that it only bothered them a little. Comments ranged from minor annoyance to significant physical and mental health issues.

4) Does the lack of darkness in the summer here bother you?

Twenty-eight per cent answered yes.

5) If the lack of darkness bothers you, does it bother you a little or a lot? If it is a lot, describe in what way. There were no responses indicating it bothered them a lot.

6) Would you rather live somewhere where the amount of daylight is consistent throughout the year? Seventy-five per cent said

no. There were a few comments about how the swings in daylight make the Yukon special.

And what about me, the transplanted big city guy? I guess I am kind of in the middle, as I often am, in terms of how I feel about the seasonal changes in sunlight.

Yes, the extremes bother me, but only a little. Given my druthers, and setting aside all other factors, I would rather live somewhere with less extreme differences in sunlight, but certainly not near the equator where there is no variation.

So, where does all this leave us? One conclusion is that things aren’t always easy north of sixty, but Yukoners make the best of it and sometimes even revel in our uniqueness and the required adjustments we must make. It would be interesting to hear the views of people who lived near the equator what they think of the lack of change in daylight.

Citywide celebrations There are lots of activities taking place on National Indigenous Peoples Day

ational Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, is right around the corner. There’s so much to celebrate during this nationwide statutory holiday.

The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse will host a day of festivities on June 21, including live music, artist demonstrations, traditional foods, ceremonies and more. Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFC), Ta’an Kwäch’än Council (TKC), the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) and the Fireweed Market are all partners in the celebration that will be held in Whitehorse.

To start the day, the Yukon government will host an unveiling of the restoration of the BC Centennial Totem Pole at the waterfront.

At 11:45 a.m., there will be a march along the riverfront to the KDCC. Opening ceremonies will commence at noon at the KDCC. Throughout the day there will demonstrations of hand games and arctic sports games, as well as a bannock bake-off, an array of food trucks, face painting for kids and a local arts market. Additional activities for kids will be offered at the Whitehorse Public Library.

Mainstage performances will run throughout the afternoon and evening, featuring dance groups from around the Yukon, as well as well as an array of musical performances.

This year, Whitehorse will also be live on location for Indigenous Day Live (IDL), the nation’s largest event in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Through cultural activities and live music, the aim of IDL is to bring together Canadians from across the country in celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ unique culture and identity.

On June 22, free daytime celebrations and evening concerts will take place in Winnipeg, Whitehorse, and Calgary. In Whitehorse, Shipyards Park will be filled by the sounds of some of the most recognized entertainers in Indigenous music and television.

“We have been working hard to connect with Canadians to share our culture,” said Jean La Rose, CEO of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. (APTN.) “We

aim to present the true face of Indigenous peoples to create a bridge between Canada and Indigenous Canada to help improve the relationship in order to give each other opportunities to thrive and expand.”

Indigenous Day Live is an opportunity to share a fusion of music, dance, languages and interdisciplinary arts from First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in a celebration of contemporary Indigenous expression. It has been held annually since 2007 and is the largest celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.

“The goal here has been to give an opportunity to our artists to be seen and heard and to share their talent and culture with all Canadians,” said La Rose.

Leela Gilday is among the talented artists who will perform in Whitehorse for IDL. Gilday is a Dene-Canadian singer songwriter from Yellowknife. From a young age she was immersed in music.

She is now a widely celebrated artist from Canada’s North. Gilday is about to release her fifth record. Its first single will be out on June 21.

“I’ve performed on this broadcast before,” said Gilday. “And they always put on a really highvalue production show.”

Gilday said she was grateful to be able to share the stage with such exceptional Indigenous musicians. She said she’s also excited to be able to share a sneak preview of her new record with the Whitehorse public and all those watching IDL. Gilday will return to the Yukon for Blue Feather Festival in November.

This year, the live multi-platform concert broadcast will air from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. ET on June 22. It will be broadcast via APTN, its radio partners and online at IndigenousDayLive.ca. To join the conversation anytime, use the hashtag #IDL2019 “We would love to see all of Whitehorse attend and truly want to make it an amazing day for every resident. They are all invited,” said La Rose.

he race roster is set for the 2019 Yukon River Quest (YRQ) and will continue the trend of increasing registrations. This year’s field, as of writing, will feature a record 124 teams with 290 paddlers.

Thirteen countries are represented including Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States (from 18 different states) and Canada. (From nine provinces and territories.) The YRQ reached the 125 team registration limit in November and, with the waitlist, will certainly break last year’s record of 103 teams starting the race in Whitehorse.

“The race filled stunningly fast this year,” said Peter Coates, race president. “We were half full within an hour of opening registration and full in less than two days. We then built up a waitlist of 36 teams.”

The race is the highlight of the paddling summer in the North, keeping teams, volunteers, support crews and spectators returning year after year. Except for two mandatory rest stops totaling 10 hours, adventure and marathon paddlers race non-stop over the 715 kilo-

metres (444 miles) to Dawson City.

“It is quite exciting,” Coates said. “We have never had a field this big.

“We have real competition in depth in almost every class. The voyageurs, C4s and C2s look very competitive, as do the SUPs. And the kayaks too.”

Coates thinks the race between the top three voyageurs and the leaders in the C4s and C2s will be the race to watch.

All teams are required to have activated SPOT or InReach tracking devices, which greatly aid those following the race on their computers or mobile devices. They can follow the race tracker link at www.

The total possible 2019 race purse will be a record $53,632 CAD. A new prize money structure awards the top three male, female and mixed teams per class as long as they beat another team in their class and finish within 25 per cent of the top team in the class. Bonus prize money also will be given to the top 10 teams overall, any team that breaks a record in its class, the top First Nations team, the top sen-

ior team (age 55 and over), the top young adult team (age 19-24), and the top Yukon male, female and mixed teams.

“The competitive boats are important, but we must not forget that this race is really for the middle of the pack,” Coates said.

“This race is something that families have been living for the last year, and it can be a life-changing experience for people. It is quite humbling to realize that we have something here that can be that significant in people’s lives.”

But most of the paddlers are just aiming to get to Dawson and be awarded a coveted YRQ Finisher Pin and have some stories to share.

Spectators are asked to gather in Rotary Peace Park and along the Whitehorse waterfront before noon on Wednesday, June 26 to witness the start of this year’s YRQ and cheer on the racers.

Who to Watch on the River in 2019 h Solo canoe (C1):

8 teams (five men, three women) The C1 teams are no longer in an open class, so the genders will race amongst themselves. Alison Eremenko of local team “Gulo Gulo” is a strong paddler, but she could see a challenge from Hawaiian racer Jennifer Fratzke. Returning on the men’s side is “Mr. Bill” William Siersdorfer of Texas, who won this class in 2017 and took second last year, but watch out for Ontario racer Chris Near in “Bent Shaft.” He has a number of eastern races on his resume.

The K1 field is big again and defending class champ “Golden Retriever” Wayne Anderson of Alberta is the clear favorite. Anderson won K1 in 2016. In 2017 he was on the winning voyageur team. In women’s K1, Kelley Watson of Washington will go after a second title; she won her class in 2017 and took second in 2018. Past K2 women’s champion, Amy Byers of California, is in this field. Anne Quemere of France comes to the YRQ as a debutante, but brings an impressive resume. Quemere has rowed the Atlantic Ocean both ways, navigated a kite boat on both the Atlantic and Pacific, kayaked the Northwest Passage solo (2014 and 2015) and again in a “solarboat” last summer.

h Tandem canoe (C2):

41 teams (22 men’s teams, eight women’s, 11 mixed) Tandem canoe remains the oldest and most popular class in the race. The favorite has to be Saskatchewan’s “#wepaddletogether,” with past champion Mike Vincent and friend Ivan English. Women’s C2 has its most registered yet. The local favorite has to be “Beating the Odds” with veteran Yukon paddlers Margo Millette and Shelley Gellatly. They will be challenged by last year’s runner-up in this class, “Huptown Girls” including Heidi Virtanen and Brooke Ramsay from Calgary, Alberta. The mixed class should see stiff competition between the co-defending mixed champs, “The Bickersons” made up of Bonnie Pankiw and Christopher Weber of Quebec, and Ontario’s “Golden Lake Crew” of Jennifer and Sebastien Courville. Also watch out for “Mix of Sun and Clouds,” with past overall champ Gaetan Plourde, who will be paddling with his wife, Tracy.

But men’s teams “Beast Coast” and the “All Aussie Battlers” from Australia and “MoKan Paddlers” with Dan Voss and Terry Shortt, a couple of MR340 racers from Missouri and Kansas, should challenge. The two women’s teams will be competitive. “Sportsbasement” with Elaine Baden and Marsha Arnold from California and “SuPi Sisters” Pia Montoya-Kuhl and Susie Needham of Nebraska have Lower 48 race experience.

h Four-person canoe (C4):

9 teams (four men’s teams, two women’s, three mixed) First added in 2017, the C4s are a full-blown class like others in the race. In men’s, watch for the Yukon-Ontario team “Alpha Super Awesome Strokes of Genius Wolf Squadron“ and top USA racers on team “C4Daze”. The mixed category is tough to call, but “Trois Rivieres” has paddlers with YRQ experience. The women’s race will be between two teams of local YRQ veterans, “Dinji Zhu,” captained by Pauline Frost, and “In the Crosshairs,” captained by Carmen Gustafson.

h Voyageur canoe (VC):

13 teams (six men’s teams, five women’s, two mixed) The men’s favorite “Yukon Wide Adventures,” captained by Whitehorse’s Thomas de Jager, is back to do something that has never been done–win three straight overall YRQ titles, albeit with a slightly different mix of paddlers each year. Watch out for the “Hatchet Lake Voyageurs” from Saskatchewan, returning to the YRQ after nearly a decade. Also watch for the British team “C6 Heave Paddlesports.” In women’s voyageur, with a win and two runner-up finishes in the past three years, “Stix Together” from the Yukon has emerged as a favorite, along with perennial favourite “Paddlers Abreast” and “Team Whoa.” They’ll have a challenge from across the border in “The Wild Irises” from Skagway, Alaska.

A hare-raising tale

I

was sitting on the back porch the other day, whittling myself a new pipe, when a rabbit popped out from under a garbage bin and shot across the alley. I chuckled to myself. It reminded me of a time back in Inuvik when we were kids and a friend introduced us to the concept of “fast food.”

A bunch of us were playing street hockey. One of the guys was a kid named Freddy Siksik.

He was a couple years older than us. Freddy was raised in the bush and didn’t come to town until he was 16. He didn’t know his multiplication tables, but he could skin a rabbit in six seconds flat.

(I remember one time when our teacher was trying to teach him simple math.

“If 10 of us had three apples each, how many would we have?” he asked. Freddy sat there with his chin resting on his desk. He looked up at the teacher. “Quite a bit,” he said.)

So we were playing hockey and Freddy was coming up on a breakaway when a rabbit shot out of the bush and across the road, right in front of Pete “Soapy” Smith, who was in the net. Instead of shooting for Pete’s weak spot (top shelf, glove side), Freddy wound up with all his might and took a slap shot at the galloping rabbit. Now you can’t tell me a guy doesn’t know his math when it comes to shooting a frozen sponge puck at a galloping rabbit. He took the rabbit’s speed, approximately 35 miles an hour,

the distance between the puck and rabbit, about 20 feet, and the speed at which he fired the puck, around 60 miles an hour, and nailed it square in the head, sending it ass over teakettle. In that split second, Freddy applied both Pythagorean Theorem and Newton’s Law of Physics.

“We feast like kings tonight, boys,” he said, holding the rabbit up by the legs. Freddy then walked into the bush and set about making a fire. He looked at me like I was stupid and sent me to get wood. I went about finding some dry willows and came back with half an armful.

One thing about a rabbit, you don’t need a knife to skin it. You just break the skin off the back legs and peel it, like you’re taking your sock off. There was a redheaded kid from Toronto named Delbert. We called him Red. His dad moved his family up from Toronto to manage the CIBC. He damned near went green watching Freddy peel off the rabbit’s skin, then rip the guts out with his bare hands.

By then the fire was going pretty good and Freddy had fashioned a roaster out of some green willows. He jammed the spreadeagled rabbit into the snow and it was soon sizzling by the fire.

Freddy pulled out a bread bag, which held his stash of tobacco, and showed off to us by rolling a smoke with one hand. He let us share one between us and rolled himself up another. My cousin, Ebun, was hogging the rollie and

Rabbits need to be careful when Dennis and his buds are playing street hockey we had to chase him around to get a few puffs.

Freddy tended to that rabbit like he was a French chef. he turned it and tested its texture from time to time. When it was ready, he ripped off a hind leg and went at it like a Flintstone.

“Dig in boys,” he said. At first, some of us were too embarrassed, but after the first taste, we cleaned all the meat off that thing. All that was left of it was a rib cage and back bone. Even Red was right in there, licking his fingers like he was at KFC. After that, he was always coming around, asking Freddy to cook up

another rabbit.

I was sitting at the Pit in Dawson City last summer when this guy with a big beard, wearing a mackinaw and rubber boots, came up and asked me if I used to live in Inuvik. I told him I did.

He asked me how Freddy Siksik was doing and if he was cooking up anymore rabbits. I damned near did a backflip when he took off his toque to reveal that same shock of red hair he had as a kid.

It was Red! His dad got transferred to Dawson and they stayed there for a few more years. When his dad got transferred again, Red stayed. He said that day Freddy

cooked that rabbit on the fire, he knew there was more to life than chasing the almighty dollar like his dad. He stuck it to the man and has been living off the grid for the last 40 years. He was house-sitting for Caveman Bill and invited me for dinner. Guess what we had? You guessed it, rabbit. It was damned near as good as Freddy Siksiks.

The Town of Faro remains a scenic location amongst the mountains

he town of Faro is turning 50 this year and the party runs all week. A birthday extravaganza will take place from June 28 until July 7. There will be performances from local musicians including Dena Zagi and the Tu’Lidlini Drummers from Ross River, as well as demonstrations from local artists and more.

The festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony starting at 6 p.m. on June 28. Throughout the week, there will also be mine tours and a market featuring local vendors, artists and food. There will also be gallery walks, storytelling sessions, workshops, an open house at the local school, arts and crafts demos, and even a high school reunion!

For those who enjoy the outdoors, this week will also offer hiking tours to Van Gorda Falls, a family day fishing derby, an archery balloon shoot and an ATV poker rally. Since this weeklong event is taking place close to the Golf Tournament, a golf pro will be available for private lessons at the driving range, special for the anniversary.

The town of Faro has partnered with Murdoch’s Gem Shop to bring back the Faro ring in two different styles. The rings are available for order at Murdoch’s. One of them will also serve as a door prize dur-

ing the anniversary week.

“This town has been through a lot and has survived and thrived,” said Faro 50th committee member Tina Freake. “And this event is a chance to showcase what Faro is now. It is not just a mining town anymore.”

Freake explained how the image and community of Faro has changed over time.

“It is now a very family oriented and artistic community.”

Freake and the rest of the Faro community are looking forward to sharing this big moment with members of the town and those from elsewhere who come to join in on the fun and celebration.

“This is a major event for such a small town,” said Freake. “I want to give a huge shout out to all the amazing volunteers that put hundreds of hours into making this event possible, we would not be able to do this without them.

“For those who would still like to take part in the weeklong festivities, it is not too late to book and it will definitely be worth it.

There is still accommodation available at certain hotels and guest spaces at the local campground. On top of that, overflow campsites will be offered for additional accommodation.
