Yugoners with Doug Sack

From Yukon longjohns to Alberta Dungarees The long and colourful history of the Yukon is full of men and women who came from all over the world and found great success up North. The best example of that is probably “Big Alex” McDonald from Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The undisputed “King of the Klondike” owned 30 claims on the four richest creeks before the end of 1897, yet still managed to die broke on Clear Creek in 1909. But what about those who moved in the other direction? People who were born and raised in the North, but went Outside to find their successes? Ah, that list might be somewhat smaller, but perhaps more interesting. Author Pierre Berton, raised in Dawson City, comes to mind. International fashion designer Catherine Regehr, daughter of Whitehorse lawyer, Henry, is another contender, as is actress Amy Sloan. But how many other “Yugoners” are out there somewhere and what have they done? That is the premise of this new What’s Up Yukon series, which we hope becomes a steady, long-running staple of informative northern success stories. There is only one qualifying rule: The candidates have to be Yukoners by birth and/ or upbringing before they became Yugoners as adults. Of course, Atlin counts as the prettiest little ol’ town (NOT) in the Yukon and we will also not be nitpickers about pre-natal technicalities like your mother having a complicated pregnancy that means you were born in Edmonton or Vancouver. (It wasn’t your fault!)

We played places like casinos, corporate functions, small bars, nearby music festivals and self-produced four albums that did okay. I started my own recording and sound studio in 2005, so was half-techie and half-musician in those days, playing lead guitar and vocals when the band had a gig.” When he folded JMB in 2009 to concentrate on the business side of producing music (and also movie editing and TV audios), he felt himself becoming more of a technician than a singer and songwriter. “In a word, I guess I was getting bored with it all and missed the fun of performing. I knew just about everybody in the Edmonton music scene from the studio and The Dungarees happened more by

accident than planning. Growing up in Yukon and Atlin, I felt right at home playing country music but had to switch to bass guitar to fit the group. It came together quite quickly and felt more like a progression than a career change, with a gig here and a rodeo hoedown there, mostly in Edmonton but anywhere in Alberta too and it was just what I needed when we officially formed the band in 2010. Instead of tinkering with volume levels inside a small room all the time, I was back in rocking roadhouses, making music and having a good time.” He laughed recalling that the Dungarees’ first challenge was getting enough songs worked up to finish a set without closing with the same song they opened with. By the spring of 2014, the band was well-established in Edmonton and well-known throughout Alberta. They produced albums and

singles from their own studio, but Murdoch knew the band couldn’t go much further unless they got into the Calgary Stampede, which is the big-time of country rock in western Canada. “Frankly, I was surprised we hadn’t been invited to join the party in Calgary before then, so I began bugging the other guys to find somebody who knew somebody down there. Nothing happened. Finally, one of the guys said his brother knew somebody who knew somebody who was on the committee that arranges entertainment for the Stampede.” Murdoch gave him a call. “Voila! Just like that we had a 10-day gig booked on our calendar in early July, but nobody told us where, who or what. All they said was bring some clean shirts because we wouldn’t have time to shop or do our laundry,” he said with a laugh. “I didn’t care if the gig was opening a new car wash in the suburbs as long as it was in Calgary during the Stampede,” he said. “About halfway through June, we still didn’t know anything about our rodeo gig so I made another call to find out where we were playing and staying, which was when they blew the rest of my mind apart.” “We were opening for Reba McEntire, the headline act, in the Saddledome on the main stage for the entire Stampede, which would easily be the biggest audiences we had ever played by a country mile.” The Saddledome seats 19,289 for NHL games and close to 25,000 for Stampede headline concerts, which are the entertainment highlight of the whole party. (The population of Whitehorse is 25,085.) “I had no idea we were opening for Reba, but knew immediately

the gig could be a game-changer for The Dungarees if we pulled it off. I was nervous at first thinking about it, then scared on opening night and finally determined to conquer a bad case of fear of the unknown and put on the best show we possibly could. We went

a little ‘Now or Never’ crazy on stage that first night.” In a nutshell, they did such a good job pumping up Reba’s crowd, Dwight Yoakam hired them to go on tour to open for him. They have since opened for Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Alabama. When they went on their own tour of Australia in the winter of 2018 (summer down under) they took the island nation by storm and went from nowhere on the Australian country and western charts to the number two spot, behind only “The King,” Garth

Brooks. The tour was such a success, they are going back this year for another winter with an expanded schedule on the beaches, burgs and outback of Oz. “We went from sandals and shorts to toques and parkas in one long plane ride home,” Murdoch recalled as he sat on the closed patio at Big Bear, co-owned by his Atlin childhood buddy, Travis Milos. When you have toured Australia with your own band, you are an official Yugoner, but in name only if you are a son of the Frantic Follies and the grandson of Kluane National Park. “We have a new recording being released in May,” he said in conclusion. “The lead single is called ‘Twenty Something.’ Following that we’ll be touring festivals across Canada and Australia through the summer, culminating in the Canadian Country Music Awards in September, in Calgary. “Yeah, there will be several performances at our sixth straight Stampede in July and some unsigned big ones still in the works that we can’t announce quite yet.” For now, even though he gets his mail in Edmonton, Murdoch is less a Yugoner and more a roving Yukoner on temporary loan to Alberta and the rest of the world. He’s also the perfect pioneer to launch this new series into the future—a series of the next generation of young Yukoners taking their chances on the Outside. Alex’s Dad was Doug Sack’s best man at his only wedding in Atlin in 1977, then later somehow turned his only divorce into a Frantic Follies comedy skit called “Homesick Cures” which kept tourists chuckling for many years.

When home cooking wasn’t frozen in a box

Brown onions in frying pan and add beef. Fry until cooked. Add tomatoes, soup and cooked macaroni. Cook until all is wellheated. Salt and pepper to taste. We have often substituted fried brown mushrooms for the canned soup.

Murray shares some “instant meals” for families from the 40s and 50s that don’t come from a box

Murray Martin shares recipes from the 1940s and ‘50s with us. Questions or comments about his stories can be sent to editor@whatsupyukon.com.

PHOTO: Pixabay CHILI CON CARNE Now we are going back in time to the 1940s, before the days of questionable, pre-cooked contents in a box. The meal of the day was chili con carne. We had a big family, so cut this one down accordingly. Try it once and you’ll be hooked. Ingredients: 2 Tbsp of salad oil 1 cup chopped onions 1 cup chopped green peppers 1 clove 1 pound ground beef 1 can tomatoes 1 can kidney beans 1 ½ tsp chili powder. 1 cup chopped white onions. Heat salad oil. Add onions, green pepper and garlic. Sauté slowly until slightly brown. Remove garlic. Add ground beef, tomatoes, kidney beans, salt and chili powder. Cover and simmer over low heat for about one hour. Serves 8. CORNED BEEF IN A BLANKET If you like corned beef, you’ll enjoy this one. If you have never tried it, throw away that protective blanket and sit down to a real tasty meal. It’s a fast one for supper if you have to eat and rush off to a meeting. (or go fishing.)

Ingredients: Can corned beef 2 Tbsp brown sugar 2 tsp condiment sauce such as chili or steak sauce 2 tsp dry mustard 2 cups mashed potatoes Corn flakes Turn the contents of a can of corned beef from its container, unbroken. Place on a greased baking pan. Make a sauce of brown sugar, condiment sauce and dry mustard. Spread over beef. Cover with 2 cups fluffy mashed potatoes. Brown in oven at 400 F for about an hour. Crumbled Corn flakes may be sprinkled over the potatoes for a crusty surface. MULLIGAN STEW You might say this is the cousin to shepherd’s pie. Ingredients: 1 ½ cups rice 1 pound ground beef 2 white onions, diced 1 can tomato soup Bread crumbs Cook rice until tender. Cook beef and onions together. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Alternate layers of rice and meat in casserole dish. Pour over one can of tomato soup. Sprinkle dried bread crumbs on top. Bake 30 minutes at 400 F.

BEEF AND KIDNEY PIE This one is not quite as old as I am, but I remember in the late 1930s, sitting down at the supper table and enjoying this fine-tasting beef and kidney pie. Ingredients: 2 pounds beef steak 1 kidney, cut in 1-inch pieces Salt and pepper 2 cups flour ¾ cups finely chopped suet 1 cup baking powder ½ cup water Mix to a thick paste with water. Roll out. Line a pudding bowl, leaving enough dough for the top. Fill bowl with beef and kidney. Season with salt and pepper. Fill with water until the liquid is an inch from the top of the bowl. Top with remaining dough, rolled out. Steam for two hours. HAMBURGER AND MACARONI Here is an easy, tasty supper. There was no date on this one, but I do remember it from the mid-1940s. Last Thursday, we sat down to this exact recipe.

Kluane mountain twang

The 16th annual festival brings together some fan favourites starting June 7

has welcomed a new cohort of directors this year, mixing fresh energy with experience. The board hired Selene Vakharia as the 2019 festival producer. (That role had previously been driven by volunteer fuel.) The team has also worked very closely with the village of Haines Junction to strengthen the event’s roots in the community, by implementing a number of suggestions from local businesses and residents. The traditions continue this year, with a top-tier performance menu garnished with acoustic instruments and singing workshops, the Saturday night Family Barn Dance and the always breathtaking Sunday Gospel Show at St. Christopher’s Church. New this year is a flexpass ticket option. Buyers can share this bundle of day passes with friends and family. There will also be a roving musical group, Meal Ticket, performing and leading jam sessions around the village at businesses and public areas. The board has welcomed increased sponsorship from local businesses and hopes to return business through increased local business promotion. Participation in the music is trademark. The jams begin on the grass in the morning, roll through midday on the grounds and the shade of the campgrounds and

The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7 and runs through until suppertime on Sunday, June 9. This year’s festival has been sold out since late April, but several free events are open to the public, so plan to make the trip to the Junction and join us! More information about KMBF,

including the full artist lineup, schedule, volunteer opportunities, and camping and accommodation options are available on the Festival website at YukonBluegrass.com. he Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival (KMBF) has an unfair advantage. It has never had to work to attract world-class performing acts and is known widely on the festival circuit as “the one to play.” The performers, awestruck by the St. Elias range and the beautiful community of Haines Junction, are grateful for the warm reception they receive. They remind attendees every year how special the Kluane mountains are and what an incredible event KMBF has become. The 16th annual festival will take place in Haines Junction from June 7 to 9, with a performer lineup featuring acts from south of the border and southern Canada as well as the deep pool of northern talent. This year’s headlining acts are a sort of “best of the fests.” The Claire Lynch Band, Breaking Grass, and Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen have all been festival favourites in previous years. The northern performers are a wonderful complement of seasoned veterans and emerging stars including Annie Lou, Ryan McNally and the Messarounders, and The Lucky Ones. Meal Ticket, Petunia and The Small Glories round out the fantastic lineup. The festival organizing board

The Festival Showcase will once again offer a chance for any group to audition a couple of songs, with the winners earning a performance slot at KMBF 2020. Anyone who has attended knows that the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival is so much more than the sum of these parts, and even so much more than just bluegrass. As with other years, this year’s lineup features offerings from across the acoustic music spectrum, including acoustic folk and blues, old time, ‘newgrass’ and straight-ahead country. The collection of performers is always curated to ensure that the audience is treated to performances anchored by a focus on the music, with soaring harmonies and astonishing instrumentals. Combine this festival hallmark with the magical backdrop of Haines Junction, the cozy surroundings and the endless opportunities to join in the music, and you have a magic that creates lasting memories. ould you believe conversations around consent don’t need to be awkward? Shelby Maunder does and she’s sharing the message with youth. Maunder is the executive director of Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE), a for-youthby-youth organization that’s leading conversations around healthy relationships and consent. Understanding that discomfort and a lack of tools can keep us from having these important conversations in life, the organization has developed programs that break down barriers and help young people laugh their way into learning. Since last April, BYTE has made over 12 trips to communities and led a number of workshops in Whitehorse on consent and healthy relationships. Each workshop differs depending on the needs of the community BYTE is visiting. BYTE tailors programming by working with the youth or youth worker in the community who requested the workshop. This way, the organization can understand key needs and issues. BYTE’s approach is to show youth they themselves have a lot of the answers they’re looking for. “We don’t give them the answers. We are there to remind them they have all the answers already, said Maunder. “(It’s) small-scale, but has a ripple effect that they know how to support each other and many people are reinforcing this message that their boundaries are important. The workshops use games such as “Green, Yellow, Red and “Can I Blank Your Blank to make lessons accessible and fun. “Green, Yellow, Red leads to some of the challenging conversations around the grey areas that can surround consent, which offers opportunities “to reinforce that this might be an ok boundary for you, but it’s not ok for someone else,

said Maunder. “Can I Blank Your Blank has led to some of Maunder’s favourite memories of the programs. In the game, participants write

but we don’t often talk to young people about how to hear a no and accept a no and how to have a healthy breakup, said Maunder. “There are ways to end re-

Shelby Maunder helps youth have positive conversations about unhealthy relationships nouns and verbs on pieces of paper and pair them together as a sort of Mad Libs version of consent. “That game is always a standout moment, said Maunder. “Because people are awkward at first, but then there is a lot of laughter. It’s important for youth to talk about consent and relationships and to do so often. These games give youth the opportunity to practice and have those conversations. “The more youth practice their boundaries and hear those messages, (the more) they reduce the risk of sexualized assault, said Maunder. Inspired by an idea from community member Paige Galette, BYTE plans to expand its program this summer by building on its Healthy Relationships workshop. Part two of the workshop will be developed in partnership with Galette and will focus on breakups and rejections and how to handle those in a healthy and respectful way. “We talk to people about talking about their own boundaries,

lationships that aren’t toxic and that’s really important. There is so much frightening news about women who are hurt because they have said no to someone. We can talk to everyone about ‘it’s ok to say no’ and ‘your boundaries,’ but if people don’t respect them it’s only one side of the coin. You need to be building both sets of tools. You can say no and you might also hear no and this is how you should respond. If you want to start a conversation with the young people or friends in your life that are in unhealthy relationships, Maunder recommends approaching the conversation with no judgement. “I think it can be really hard when we hear about people in unhealthy relationships to fight the urge to be, like, ‘get out!’ said Maunder. “You want to protect your friends, but sometimes you just need to listen. And sometimes it’s going to take someone more than one try to get out of an unhealthy relationship. It’s really important that you’re still there for them becont’d on page 13 ...

In pursuit of the perfect shot

A push for the Porcupine caribou herd As any wildlife photographer knows, Mother Nature doesn’t always play ball. And that was something that Peter Mather certainly realised when he set out to capture an epic photograph of the

caribou migration in the Yukon wilderness. This is an account about his story, In Pursuit, and to understand what he went through to try to capture the photograph of his dreams.

I

Peter Mather pursued the Porcupine Caribou Herd to recreate images of men from the Klondike Gold Rush, but with caribou

Peter Mather’s journey in pursuit of the caribou was far into the wilderness pulling 700 lbs of equipment

love adventure. And I love storytelling. That’s what motivates me to go on these expeditions. The Porcupine Caribou Herd is thought to have the longest mammal migration on the planet. The image I wanted to capture is hard to describe, but while doing research on the caribou, I saw videos of them in winter, migrating in long lines of thousands. It reminded me of images of the Klondike Gold Rush a hundred years ago, where there was a line of 400 men following a trail straight up the mountain. I wanted to recreate this image, but with caribou. I wanted to create an intimate image, with the lead caribou very close to the camera, but I also wanted to be able to see a line of caribou leading down the mountain and across the valley floor as well, to give you a sense of the number of caribou and the teamwork that they employ when moving in winter. The planning was the hard part. The longest ski trip of this type I’d done before was one night. Additionally, my expedition partner, Marty, didn’t have any winter experience. I was lucky that the most experienced ski trip expeditioner in the Yukon, Peter Heebink, is a friend of mine. He has been doing trips like this for 40 years, so I met with him a dozen times and gained 40 years of experience through him. We could never have done this without his knowledge. He was the one who advised us not to use a tent. That all you need is a good winter sleeping bag and sleeping mat. This was invaluable for us, and we loved sleeping outside. Tents fill with condensation in winter and are a huge hassle without providing you with much warmth. Our sleeping bags were so efficient that when it snowed on us, the snow wouldn’t melt on the bags, because the outside of the bag was still minus 10, while inside we were at plus 20. Setting off, we were optimistic. The plan was to drop myself and Marty at Margaret Lake in Ivvavik National Park where we would set up a leisurely base camp and wait patiently for the 200,000 strong Porcupine caribou herd to pass through. All did not

quite go as planned. A fault with the plane meant that we had to be dropped off 120 km from our intended destination and ski the rest of the way. I’ve never experienced such a sustained and hard expedition as this one. We were forced into the most intense physical and emotional journey either of us will ever experience. It would have been manageable had we been pulling 150 pounds of equipment, but we were pulling 700 pounds. We had planned for a base camp situation, but that was far from what we were faced with. After 12 hours we’d managed 10 km of skiing. Progress was slow to say the least. The snow underfoot was so soft, we kept sinking metres down, battling to pull ourselves out again. It seemed impossible. To make matters worse, Marty’s feet had turned into one huge, swollen, puss-filled blister. After the third day, we took the difficult decision to rest for a day, to allow his feet to heal somewhat. But then Marty had a brainwave. “Maybe if we ski through the night, the cold night crust might just hold us up and we can make better time?” The first signs were promising. We still broke through the snow but far less often than we had before. We moved much faster. On our first night, we made 8 km and were feeling far more positive than before. It was still a battle, though. The lead skier was still doing three or four times more work than the follower and it was mentally and physically tough, but at least we were getting somewhere. By day 10, we’d basically made it. We cracked out the satellite phone to get an update as to where the caribou were. And that’s when we hit our next hurdle. The caribou had stopped migrating and were still about a week away! After the incredible push we made to get there, it was a bizarre feeling. Hilarity mixed with disappointment. All that stress and work for nothing. We had to wait anyway. And it was at that point that Mother Nature threw us another yet another curveball. As we waited for the caribou to arrive, the weather took a turn. Sum-

mer arrived. The temperature increased by about 40 degrees, completely melting the snow. When the caribou finally arrived, they weren’t travelling in lines or in trails. They passed through in loose groups of 50, slowly grazing on the grass. My plans for the perfect photo melted with the snow. I was disappointed, but I found it okay to deal with the fact we didn’t get the shot we wanted. Failing is simply part of the process. I know that I may spend a month chasing the perfect photo on skis and not get it, but that I may be driving down some remote road a month later and get the best caribou shot of all time. Things always work out in the end. All you can do is put the work in. Although Marty and I have always made a pact to look back on this expedition with fondness and good memories, we did also make a pact to remember the hell it was, to ensure we never try something so stupid ever again! The pact hasn’t lasted long though. Every time the two of us meet for a beer, we start hatching plans again. Once you find your passions in what you photograph, it’s important to go out and shoot as much as you can. It’s the only way to learn. Simply go and do it. That’s why I wasn’t too upset we didn’t get the shot this time. I’m passionate about the caribou, the land and the people that live here. And if you’re passionate, you will have success. I want the Porcupine caribou herd to keep on migrating through these lands, just as they always have. And as long as they do, the chase for the perfect photo will continue. Do you have a tire

that you have been airing up every so often?

DO YOU HELP HER OUT? Rally your friends to intervene as a group. Get them a safe ride (or walk them to their tent). Don’t look the other way. Make your community safer.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.

Sexualized violence is everyone’s issue. Together, we can end it one conversation at a time. endviolenceyukon.com

Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Keddy

Honey ginger chicken feet

C

hicken feet may be a lot for some, but this recipe is for those few people I know who just love gnawing on these gooey talons at dim sum restaurants down south. This is a simplified version you can make at home in a day. (The traditional route is a two-day process involving a deep fryer.) For those who have never had the opportunity to try chicken feet,

give it a try and let me know what you think. Serves 2 (as meal or 4 as a snack) INGREDIENTS

❑ 2 lbs chicken feet, nails trimmed off

❑ 1 tbsp toasted sesame

❑ 2 tbsp soy sauce ❑ 1 tbsp honey ❑ 1 tbsp grated ginger ❑ 1 clove garlic, finely chopped

❑ 3 cups stock ❑ Toasted sesame seeds, to garnish

Perforating the walls to let nature in

New art installed at NorthLight Innovation Centre aims to remind us of our connection to the natural world by Amber Church

hen NorthLight Innovation Centre put out a call for proposals for art to amplify the space, Marten Berkman saw it as the perfect opportunity to celebrate the natural world, community, entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation and the intricate web of connections between all of these vital elements to life in the Yukon. “I wanted the piece I proposed to be in line with the natural world and our connection to it,” Berkman said. “Especially because it would be housed in an innovation space with a strong focus on technology, so it felt important to bring the natural world into that environment and remind everyone of the fundamental link between what is happening within the building and the world outside.” In order to do this, Berkman brought together a group of artists to collaborate and create the finished in-situ work. Ken Anderson, Leslie Leong, Jayden Soroka and Willow Berkman joined Berkman in the creation of Remote Sensibility IX, a three-dimensional photo installation Berkman describes as “virtual perforations in the wall that bring the outside world into the space, highlighting the fact that the boundaries we see are of our own creation.” The installation is made up of imagery, created by the collaborators, photographed by Berkman and composited together into the finished product. Ken Anderson’s contribution to the work is his carved masks.

“It was important to me to feature Ken’s work in this collaborative piece,” said Berkman. “Since the work was being installed in a space that celebrates innovation, it was necessary to recognize the innovation of the First Nations, an ancient tradition of craft and engineering with hands that goes back thousands of years.” Leslie Leong’s work bridges the natural and technological worlds by creating forests out of circuit boards. “The inclusion of Leslie’s work really spoke to the need for technology to acknowledge the web of life,” said Berkman. Jayden Soroka worked in a digital medium for his portion of the piece, but drew inspiration from the natural world, mimicking and digitally replicating algorithms found in nature. Willow Berkman, Marten’s daughter, modelled for the piece. “Willow represents the digital native for me in the collaboration,” said Berkman. “Despite her comfort in the digital world, she has her feet firmly rooted in the exploration of the natural analogue world. This balance really speaks to the need to not let technology orphan us.” Beyond photographing his collaborators’ contributions, Berkman also photographed a number of natural elements that found inclusion in the work. He highlights the wasp nest and the caribou lichen that are part of the imagery. “The wasp nest is a humbling indication of design and ingenuity that predates humanity by mil-

lions of years,” he said. “While the caribou lichen is this incredibly resilient life form that ties people, caribou, the substrate and the atmosphere all together.” The work of compositing all of the elements together had to be done with a strong intention and careful attention to detail. “I had to be conscious of the inter-ocular scale when bringing the pieces together to make sure they made sense in the space together.” It was important for this work to be tied directly to the space where is would ultimately live so that everything could be designed to be viewed from the constraints posed by the room. The space means the piece has to be viewed from below and off-perpendicular. Berkman said the finished piece was only possible because NorthLight let the collaborators create the work to fit a specific space, which he said is a rare gift for a visual artist. Reflecting on the finished work, Berkman appreciates how the art breaks up the hard, physical space. He hopes that by bringing the natural world physically into the space, it will serve as inspiration and a poignant reminder of the greater web of life from which innovation is born and must work within. Amber Church is generally enthusiastic about everything but she spends most of her time creating in an art studio and chasing a child and dog through the wilderness.
