hat was the last conversation you had with your best friend? If there is one topic that people like to talk about it, it is food. We talk about what we had for lunch or dinner.

We talk about recipes and how to cook certain foods. We talk about the foods we like and don’t like.

We talk about which stores have the best selection and the best prices. People in the Yukon are more personally connected to the land and aware of the origins of some food sources, such as wild game, than are people in Vancouver or Edmonton. However, it can probably be said that most of us likely take for granted that the food will be available when we

Local food production and sourcing has become an important component of our food supply, like the potatoes harvested here at the Yukon Grain Farm in 2017 want it.

With so much of our food trucked in from outside the territory and, considering the effects of climate change on food production, perhaps we shouldn’t take this for granted. Professor Lauren Sneyd of the University of Guelph is going to be leading a field course on food security in Canada’s North. She will be in Whitehorse, Dawson City and a few places in between to learn about Yukon’s food system and food security.

Sneyd has always wanted to teach a field school course or an experiential course that enables students to learn from experiences and not just from readings.

The course will ask students to consider how to develop positive change regarding food security in northern communities. Students will consider issues of social justice, cold climate agriculture, sustainability and environmental change. The students will spend two weeks travelling around the Yukon to hear perspectives on food security, including views from First Nations communities, NGO’s, government, farmers and researchers.

“My area of expertise is food security, food rights and food cul-

ture and I’ve always wanted to give students the opportunity to engage with food in a way that enables them to see it, taste it and learn from people working with food. I’ve organized a workshop in Whitehorse where community organizations, government and researchers will talk to students about food security work in the territory,“ said Snyed.

Students will visit a canoe-in only dairy farm outside Dawson City and the only physical abattoir in the territory. They’ll also visit a Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in teaching and training farm for Indigenous youth. They will go on a wild food walking tour with Michele Genest, author of the cookbook, Boreal Gourmet, and participate in a cooking class. Students will meet documentary filmmaker Suzanne Crocker to learn about her new project on Yukon local food.

Originally Sneyd had wondered if she would get 14 students to respond to the program call.

“I held the first information session in November and the room was standing room only.

I then realized that Yukon and food security was a big idea and the course would be competitive.

We had 41 students apply for 22 spots.” Perhaps the draw was the

hands-on nature of the course combined with students’ natural interest in food and Sneyd’s enthusiasm for it.

“I’ve always been interested in researching food,” Sneyd explained.” I completed my PhD at the University of Guelph and conducted PhD fieldwork in Cameroon in Central Africa for my research.

There I asked questions about wild food to food security in urban Cameroon. “ Now Sneyd has turned her attention to the North.

“The more I look into research on food security in the Arctic and sub-Arctic communities, the more I am learning about food systems that are unique to the local environment. These are two food systems [Cameroon and the North] at extreme edges of the world in terms of the sun and weather. I have loved reading to learn about the diversity in food systems and about food in cold climates.”

Sneyd is quite concerned that dietary diversity is being overrun by fast food, convenient food and cheap food. She states that this influx of food changes cultures and knowledge around food and separates people from their food cont’d on page 3 ...

At the same time, Sneyd feels that the Yukon is undergoing a renaissance in the food system.

“There are many actors doing amazing work to make positive changes to the food system or highlight where more work needs to be done. Suzanne Crocker’s local Yukon-only food challenge is an amazing example of the possibilities for local food and sustainability. There are many innovations underway, such as the work at Cold Climate Innovation and Cropbox, which involves growing greens in containers using hydroponics. I am super excited to take the group to visit Klondike Valley Nursery and Creamery. Chefs are also highlighting local Yukon ingredients and celebrating Yukon food.”

The students will write final papers once they are back at the end of May. As this is their first engagement, Sneyd will synthesize their insights and findings to send to the Yukon Agricultural Association and the Arctic Institute of Community Based Research as well as other community organizations. She hopes to continue the University of Guelph’s engagement with the food systems of the Yukon and have students work on experiential learning projects linked to goals of community engagement.

What do the letters “N-U-R-S-E” mean?

called him by name and talked reassuringly to him.

We had to carefully roll him to one side of the bed while we put new sheets on the other side. The slightest move made him moan in pain. It was shocking to me and the other helper. The nurse, with a tender smile on her face, kept talking reassuringly to the patient.

Rhetorical Devises Got A Story Idea?

Want To Write? voice was happy. She had a pleasant smile on her face. I asked her how come she had to make beds alone when she had so many professional medical responsibilities?

The nurse replied that it was all just part of her 12-hour daily routine.

I then asked how many years of study it had taken to become a nurse and why she chose to work a job where she was always dealing with death and the sick or injured. She said that she always felt good as a young person when she could help someone.

She knew that becoming a nurse would be her dream come true.

I thought back over some of the things I have seen in hospitals. To me, they were a nightmare.

I’ve watched grown men pass out at the sight of some incidents, yet nurses took it all in stride.

Four years of dedicated study and sacrifice to work 12-hour shifts, day and night. To see the worst in blood, guts and death, all in the name of helping a stranger. It may seem hard to appreciate or understand, but that’s what the letters “N-U-R-S-E” stand for. Yes, it does spell out “nurse” but the meaning is “guardian angel.”

From the bottom of my heart, my most sincere gratitude and appreciation goes out to all nurses.

They truly are our guardian angels.

A closing thought - “There is no better exercise for the heart then to reach down and help someone else up!”

n the 86 years since I was born, I’ve been admitted to nine different hospitals from Fredericton to Vancouver and from Whitehorse to Toronto. The causes were hockey, football, boxing, aging and sometimes just stupidity.

While spending my 86th birthday at Whitehorse General Hospital, I had time to reflect on the letters “n-u-r-s-e” and just what they stand for. That, of course, is “nurse,” but it’s something more.

Like I said, I’ve had plenty of experience with hospitals. I’ve seen some heartbreaking things, including serious injuries and crying children. I’ve also seen my share of nurses. In 1964, in Cornwall, Ontario, a decision made by a nurse actually saved my life. I will always be grateful to her.

My worst experiences came during the weeks I spent in a military hospital. The room next to mine held a pilot and his navigator. They had crashed, sustaining first, second and third-degree burns. You could actually smell the burnt skin and hear the odd moan from the two brave survivors. Across from me was a 19-year-old soldier who had been injured in an explosion, badly damaging his one leg. When he woke from his operation, he had lost the leg. The shock hit him like a ton of bricks. No one could get near him for the next two days.

In that hospital, when those of us who were bedridden could finally get up and move around, we were detailed to help the nurses make the beds of the less fortunate patients. Once, I was one of two to accompany a nurse into the room of a man who seemed to be a senior. He wasn’t, but he looked it—white as a ghost, badly scarred, very thin and in enormous pain. He could hardly see us. He could only faintly hear the tender voice of the nurse as she

While tears rolled down our faces, her facial features never changed.

This nurse, like all other nurses, experienced this kind of thing every day of her working life.

Back in Whitehorse, I was sitting up when the nurse came in with a bunch of sheets in hand.

“Hop out, Murray, I am going to make our bed,” she said. Her

I

would not consider myself a runner, and yet, here I am at the start line of the Chena River to Ridge 25-mile race. For the second time. How on Earth did this happen?

There must be something magical about living in the North.

It has a way of tricking mere mortals into thinking they can compete with the gods. At least, that is how I have felt ever since moving to the Yukon in September, 2017.

It all started one afternoon at Winterlong. My husband and I, having just moved from Victoria, British Columbia, decided to check out the local beer scene. As we enjoyed a cold pint on a crisp autumn day, in walked a group of

Yukoners whose laughter livened up the quiet space.

“They look like runners,” Blair said longingly. He had become part of a great running community in Victoria and was sad to leave those friends behind when we decided to make the move North.

“Let’s go say hello,” I said. We had made a deal that we would push each other to step outside our comfort zones and experience new things in the Yukon. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.

We picked up our beers and walked over to introduce ourselves. We were greeted warmly by the group, which we quickly learned was made up of members of the Moonlight Runners Society—a crew that gets together to

brave the darkness and run epic Whitehorse trails whenever there is a full moon. They had just finished a trail run in the area and encouraged us to join them for a run sometime. Excited to discover a new running community, we were giddy as we went back to our table, finished our beers and headed home. Little did we know then that this chance encounter would set in motion a series of amazing adventures that would inspire lifelong friendships. *** When we were invited to race the Chena River to Ridge in Fairbanks, Alaska, I’m not sure what possessed me to sign up. In the past, an 11-hour drive for a week-

end run would have been out of the question. And yet, one cold morning in March 2018, five of us packed into our Subaru Forester and off we went. We left Whitehorse as mere acquaintances and arrived in Fairbanks as friends.

The 25-mile distance would be, by far, the longest run I had ever done. And if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, Fairbanks had experienced heavy snowfall that year.

Course conditions were expected to be difficult. Regardless, I was excited to push myself and race with my new friends.

To say the race was hard is an understatement. The race pushed my body and mind well beyond my limits. It broke me. Before Chena, I had never heard of post-holing—

where each step means you’re breaking through knee-deep snow—let alone done it for hours on end.

I spent the last 10 km of the course crying in the dark. Not just tearing up, but going into fullblown hysterics, wondering what I had done in a previous life to deserve this terrible experience.

Somehow though, when I eventually heard familiar voices cheering me on in the distance, I gathered every ounce of strength I had left and ran towards the finish line.

My body was destroyed, I was exhausted and slightly delirious, but I had accomplished my goal.

I also vowed to myself that I would never do something like that again. *** The thing is, when you are surrounded by badass humans who think running ultras is no big deal, it’s hard not to be inspired. Even as a back-of-the-pack runner, fighting hard to place second last, these incredible people encouraged me to dream bigger than I ever thought possible.

better. And that’s how I found myself at the start line in Fairbanks on a sunny March morning.

The weather was perfect as I set out to conquer the course. The snow was packed down from the snowmobiles and the views from the top of the climb, which had been hidden behind clouds the previous year, were breathtaking and worth the effort. There was no post-holing and no tears this

I finished strong with the sun beaming down. I had a smile on my face as I finished nearly three hours faster than last time. Blair won the run, with the fourth fastest time ever, and our friend crushed her best prediction by over twenty minutes, coming in well under eight hours.

While my race wasn’t perfect (I managed to soak both feet in overflow and got lost and ran an extra couple kilometres), I got what I came for. Redemption.

There is something truly larger than life about the Yukon. This northern way of life has encouraged the best in us and inspired us to achieve the impossible. What makes the experience even better is the deep belly laughs that come from friendships made along the way.

n this year’s cover of Northwestel’s 2019/20 phone directory is Chantel Goodman’s striking painting, Walking out of the Library at Night. This piece captures the atmosphere and character of downtown Whitehorse at night in the middle of the long winter months. Goodman shares how special and important it is to appreciate the simple moments, as there is so much beauty right at the core of Whitehorse and its community.

It was one of these remarkable moments that sparked her inspiration for this year’s winning piece.

“I was walking out of the library at night with an arm full of books when I stopped to admire

the lights shining on the snow,” she said. The sparkling lights, strung up in the trees are at the center of Goodman’s painting.

“I did not actually paint this piece for the contest,” she said, explaining that she knew about the Yukon phone directory cover art, but wasn’t familiar with the annual contest until a friend of hers sent her a link to the competition. Winning the contest came as a pleasant surprise. Goodman said she was excited and honoured to have won.

“I have really just started dipping my toes into the water of the art world,” she said. “I am still very interested in continuing to learn more about it.”

Goodman grew up in rural Manitoba, in a town of just over 1,000 people, and has had the opportunity to live in many different places throughout her life. Upon visiting the Yukon for a month during the summer six years ago, she fell in love with the North. After completing teacher’s college, she decided that she wanted to return to the Yukon and has been living here for three years.

Goodman is a self-taught artist who has always had an interest in art. At a young age, her grandma encouraged her to make art and she dabbled in it a bit throughout high school. However, it was not until she came to the Yukon that she really began to fully devote herself to artistic expression.

“Art was always something that I was thinking about,” Goodman said. “And the Yukon’s landscape was especially inspiring as it made me want to capture everything on canvas.”

She uses acrylics on canvas.

Many of her pieces are landscape or surrealist paintings.

Goodman feels that everyone is an artist and that art is something everyone can do.

“I love seeing how everyone captures things in a different way.”

She said she appreciates the rich arts community within the Yukon and remarked on how it has contributed to her path in pursuing and creating art.

This will allow for people to hear the latest on current local projects, investment opportunities and the geological potential of the territory. Yukon Mining Days will close with a community BBQ, giving Watson Lake and Ross River residents the chance to network and connect with industry leaders.

Dinner is open to all by donation, with proceeds benefiting Yukon Women in Mining.

The events will showcase all of the opportunities available to youth, women and businesses

within the sector and will serve as a meeting place for career opportunities and meaningful connections. The industry is more inclusive than ever before. The first two events in the series will be hosted at the Watson Lake Recreation Center on May 13 and Ross River School on May 15, with activities scheduled for youth and adults alike. A Mining Extravaganza for youth (which the adults will love too!) hosts an array of fun and educational activities meant to showcase opportunities in the mineral sector.

The Mining Extravaganza activities will include an augmented reality sandbox and interactive geological teachings from Mining Matters. Yukon Women in Mining will have a Wheel of Fortune, a fun way to spin and learn about all of the career opportunities in the sector. Kids will be able to smash a geode to find the crystal inside. he planning had b e e n done for the 13 participants, six students, six adults (staff and parents) and Hunter Education Co-ordinator, Jim Welsh. The Porter Creek Secondary School group was part of the Hunter Education’s (HEED program) annual support for the school bison hunt projects, now in year 17.

Over the years, many young people, with the support of adults, have been able to participate in an ethical hunt under the guidance of those experienced in the hunt and winter camping/outdoor activity.

Originally planned as a snowmobile adventure, nature created a challenge by making sure all the snow had melted and disappeared by mid-March. The group was more than up to the challenge and they all came up with fat bikes to go hunting instead.

They trucked to the camp area south of Braeburn on the Mayo Road. The camp itself was a typical bison hunt camp, with wall tents for sleeping and kitchen, equipped with woodstoves stoked with local firewood.

The hunt itself was done on the bicycles, checking out various trails, roads and viewpoints.

Luckily three bison were spotted at the very top of one of the many bald, grassy hills on the east side of the highway north of Braeburn. Undertaking a 13-person stalk on a usually wary animal has its challenges, but that’s part of the school hunts.

The Porter Creek Secondary School bison hunt changed from a snowmobile hunt to a bicycle hunt due to lack of snow in March of the bison to access a frozen pond where they thought the bison might be headed. The hills in this area are quite steep, but the group made silent progress and got to the pond. Alas, no bison.

Switching to Plan B, they quietly worked their way back towards the hilltop where the bison had originally been spotted. Their stealth was rewarded—there was the bison, seemingly unaware of the group.

The pre-selected shooter found a steady position for the 100-yard shot and she killed the bison with a .300 Winchester Magnum. The animal was a male, about five years old, with a weight estimated at 1,200 pounds.

So now the work begins. It was about 6 p.m. when the bison was killed. Of course, there is always a moment of joy, thankfulness, reverence and congratulations.

Field dressing a wood bison is a big job though and school bison hunts are learning experiences for most of the people present at the scene. All the students that want to participate are encouraged to do so and taught the proper field dressing techniques.

Some choose to learn by watching. Food carried in the backpacks was eaten as needed.

The group was on foot and all had backpacks. The animal was gutted, dressed and cut into pieces that could be packed off the hill. As it was getting dark, the meat was spread out on the hide to cool overnight.

It was near midnight and the dark sky was full of northern lights for the trek down the hill and back to camp for the evening. Among the many valuable lessons learned that day was why it’s always a good idea to carry a headlamp, even while on a day hunt.

The following morning, the group returned to the kill site and packed everything down to the highway. Next step is planning a bison feast where the participants can reminisce about a connection to the land and the bounty it can provide.

BGCY is hosting a slate of outdoor events this year

his summer, the Boys and Girls Club of Yukon (BGCY) will celebrate its 20th year in the territory by expanding activities for kids, as part of its work to engage young members and the community. BGCY has been delivering programs, including the Learning Tree Daycare, where children between the ages of 18 months and five years receive a play-based learning experience. As well, the main BGCY space offers its Drop-In Centre from Tuesday to Saturday, year-round, and supports young people in choosing healthy futures.

By hosting the additional events with categories both for youth and adults, BGCY expects to keep more Yukon youth active, provide some great activities for local businesses and increase fundraising opportunities.

The expanded events are currently being planned throughout the summer.

The first scheduled event will be an old-school dodgeball tournament in late May. The event will feature categories for youth teams to enter during the daytime. Local businesses and groups will be able to enter adult teams in the evening portion and support BGCY at the same time. Teams will have an opportunity to compete for the title of BGCY Dodgeball Champions.

A birthday party will be held on June 6 at Boston Pizza, to coincide with the patio opening for the season. The summer patio party will encourage attendees to dress up for the beach and look forward to another 20 years in the Yukon.

conference September 18 to 21.

BGCY will co-host the seventh Canadian Adventure Therapy Symposium (CATS7) conference with the Youth of Today Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Yukon, BYTE and the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre. CATS7 follows the sixth event that was held in Montreal, Quebec on November 17, 2017. The symposium presents an opportunity for active therapy practitioners from across the country to collaborate and learn from each other.

The chance of a lifetime

y The summer of 2018 was, unexpectedly, the best summer of my life so far. I was given the rare opportunity to mine gold from the ground up.

A fellow truck driver from days past invited me to join his crew in the Klondike Goldfields near Dawson City, Yukon Territory. Yukon is famous for gold, gold mining and now the TV series Gold Rush.

After learning how to operate a Hitachi 200 hoe, I fed the wash plant/sluice with the pay dirt until the end of the mining season. The water license saga finally freed us.

August 25 gave us a late start and a mere 63 days later the season was over. Frozen assets they say.

But wow, was that interesting.

Finding good ground takes a certain “nose for gold.” It requires a study of the geography, knowledge of the area’s history, proof of previous miners’ achievements in the mining records and a whisk shot of good luck. Once you find ground—a gold claim—an educated guess determines where to dig for the underground gravel layer that holds gold. That educated guess comes about because you’ve done your homework. You run test holes to determine the presence of gold.

Hours and days of bulldozing the overburden dirt exposes the pay dirt layer holding the gold.

Overburden does not hold gold.

It’s the topsoil in which trees, shrubs and vegetation grow. It also gets in the way. All of it has to be removed so you can dig out the layer you hope holds gold. Overburden is a burden and absorbs vast amounts of time and money.

At the end of your mining efforts, you put the overburden back to

reclaim the land. That just means you put things back the way they were before you started mining.

Once the overburden is removed, you test pan this layer. No gold in the test pan means there’s no gold here. But when there is gold, it forms lets you know how many yards of pay dirt will produce how many ounces of gold per yard. (or bucket.)

Specs, chunks and nuggets will appear in the gold pan if you’re lucky. Usually you get specs or “colour” as they say. These specs, or “fines,” are what you are mining for, not nuggets. That’s because fines are more pure gold.

The composition of nuggets can include other metals such as silver or lead. Nuggets can ruin gold quality (troy) at the gold buyer’s office, so they’re separated out.

Chunks are like flattened nuggets.

They’re small and often what you find in nugget jewellery, called “jewellery gold.” This gold is worth a lot more with jewellers than it is with a gold buyer, I hear.

It shocked me to learn nuggets are not as highly valued. Imagine that. Guess that’s why Gold Rush doesn’t usually show nuggets. Our team found three small nuggets during our two-month season and I got to keep a beauty. (Thank you boss.)

I also entered the Gold Panning Championships annual event in July. I’ve never panned gold in my life. Didn’t know what raw gold looked like. Talkin’ rookie here.

This event teaches you how to pan. You get a quick, but thorough demonstration and into the competition you go. I placed 6th out of 19 entrants and got to keep the gold. Exceptional! Flakes of gold, but so much fun!! My first flake

slowly emptied into a mini sluice (called the Long Tom) to further reduce the material down to a concentrate of only black sand and gold. It’s so exciting to see the gold piling up! After that, it goes off to the gold cleaner. This is the most confidential time of the whole cleanup.

The gold cleaner separates the gold from the black sand using a mighty strong magnet. Next, the gold wheel. It’s fascinating watching the gold wheel do its magic. As the electric wheel turns, only gold goes up the clever “staircase” at the same time as the non-gold materials (small stones, silt) drop to the bottom of the wheel, wash over the wheel’s edge and fall into the garbage pail below. In the gold wheel’s dead centre, at the top of the “staircase,” is a half-inch hole through which the gold is rinsed along with the water, guided into a simple cup hung on the backside of the wheel. Overflowing with water, the cup fills with gold that sinks to the bottom. This is cleaned gold. The cup fills up, the cup is emptied, the pile of pure gold gets bigger and bigger. Glittering, gleaming, pure gold. It’s a privilege to hold. Next, it goes to the gold buyer. How much?

Well, only the gold buyer and gold owner know. They jealously guard

their secrets.

Now I understand what’s going on in the TV series Gold Rush. I admit it’s one of my most favourite TV programs. I love that show!

Yes, and another prayer was answered when I got to meet Rick Ness and shake his hand. Wow. To meet a TV-movie star is a lucky moment. But I also got to meet cast members Freddy Dodge and Monica Beets, as well as the show’s producer, Justin. It’s a small world in the small town of Dawson City, in the big Yukon Territory.

Yes indeed. I was lucky to be able to roll up my sleeves and get dirty while mining for gold. I drove articulating dump truck, operated the hoe that fed the sluice, cleaned the gold-covered mats, reduced the slurry to concentrate, fed the gold wheel and held the finished bag of pure gold. What an experience! I was honoured to be a member of this five-person crew mining in the famous Klondike Goldfields. Kind of a highlight to my whole entire life. Spirits of yesteryears, take me where the gold appears.

slipped away because I thought it was fool’s gold. However, I went on to find nine of the ten seeded flakes. Yup, I got a certificate too.

Now I’m an expert. So happy.

Later in summer I dug out a virgin pan of pay dirt and panned it. Panning is a skill you need to practice. While filling the pan, I found a small nugget just sitting there. Tossed that nugget into my pan knowing I’d find it again. (I’m an expert you see.) Never did see that nugget again. As for gold panning, I learned how to do it, but I suck.

Back at the mine, once you’ve found pay dirt, a hoe (excavator) loads a truck which dumps near the wash plant/sluice. The wash plant is positioned high up where runoff water escapes by gravity into settling ponds. At this mine, clear, clean water returned to the nearby water source while the settling ponds filled with sediment. The settling ponds were dug out regularly, with waste material increasing the height of the pond’s banks.

At the wash plant/sluice, a different hoe moved the pay dirt into the wash plant. Proudfoot; that was my job! The forty-foot trommel rotated as sprayed water forcefully blasted the gold from the rocks and pay dirt. Washed rocks fell out of the end of the trommel, the gold got trapped and stayed still in the mats below, and the canal steered runoff water toward the settling ponds. This is called sluicing.

After a number of hours of sluicing, the mats are pulled up one by one and rinsed into a tub.

The Consent Crew will be sparking discussions around consent at events throughout the summer on the Crew since its inception), Yukon Status of Women Council, and 16 volunteers.

Last year (2018) was a busy year for the Crew. They handed out 350 safe sex products, made 700 buttons touting consent slogans, talked to 1,000 people and had 200 participants in a quiz game.

ondering who the friendly people are at every festival handing out condoms, making cool buttons and sometimes dressing up like superheroes?

If you’ve been to a big event or festival in Yukon, you’ve probably seen the Consent Crew. Made up of four co-ordinating members and a team of enthusiastic volunteers, the Consent Crew uses conversations and games to get people talking about consent and healthy sexual and interpersonal relationships.

“The Consent Crew is all about encouraging folks to understand

and participate in consent— from a hug from your aunt to having sex,” said Jess Stone, program co-ordinator at the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre and one of a number of Consent Crew co-ordinators. “We want to educate folks on engaging in safer sexual health practices and provide some tools to do so. We want to keep people of all ages talking about and understanding consent and try to be those conversation starters.”

At the heart of the Consent Crew is a belief that, through this ongoing education and conversation, the high number of sexualized assaults that happen year

To give a sense of numbers, each year in Canada, it is estimated there are 600,000 sexualized assaults. In the Yukon, the rates are 3.5 times higher than the national average.

The Consent Crew plays an important role in getting people talking and learning about consent throughout their lives.

“By educating and encouraging people to practice consent and hold others to the same expectations,” said Stone. “We hope to reduce the prevalence of sexualized assault in the Yukon and work alongside many organizations to keep reducing acceptance of sexualized violence.”

While the summertime for the Crew is spent spreading consent at festivals and big events, during the school year, it offers workshops for high schools and youth groups.

In these workshops, the Crew and youth have conversations about scenarios and consent where they challenge ideas that are widely held in society, including that the victim could have done something to stop the assault from happening. These workshops lead to some great moments and some favourite memories for the Crew.

“One of my absolute favorite moments is in school presentations and we are discussing an example of a sexualized assault, asking what factors could have prevented the assault and generally we hear about the victim,” said Stone. “(They will say) ‘she could have brought her mom, worn a spacesuit and/or suit of armour, brought her squad and should have asked for a meeting in a public place’ and so on.

(But in maybe) one out of every 15 presentations someone will eventually say ‘they could have not assaulted the other person?’

There it is—my favourite moment —the recognition of the ingrained social response of victim-blaming.

I do not get tired of that look of unlearning.”

Where you’ll see them this year The Crew will be at Pride, Dawson City Music Festival, Atlin Arts and Music Festival, Paradise Music Festival, and Keno Music Fest.
