hat happens when the fire is out and the cat is rescued from the tree?

Look no further than the Whitehorse Firefighters Charitable Society (WFCS) to find out that when the job is done, they just keep helping people.

The society is an extension of what firefighters do while on the job, but it gives them the opportunity to help people beyond emergency situations. To help people in a lasting manner.

I sat down for a coffee with firefighter Nick O’Carroll. We met in his Wolf Creek home to talk about the society and its upcoming spring gala, his passion for the WFCS and the causes it supports.

O’Carroll said the gala program will be presented in a “laughable manner,” with live music during the cocktail hour, great DJ’s and dancing. Still, the story of where the gala fits into the brief history of the WFCS, and its vision for the future, is more compelling than humourous.

Whitehorse firefighters have been involved in fundraising since 1973. The Whitehorse Firefighters Association, however, formed as a non-profit only five years ago, becoming a registered charity in 2017.

Some of the major causes supported by the WFCS include the following:

• Share the Spirit. Last year the Society helped get food hampers and 2,000 presents to 662 kids.

• Financial support for Mae Bachur through firefighter calendar sales.

• British Columbia Professional Firefighters Burn Fund. Supports burn victims through contributions to medical research, medical care and a home away from home program for families of patients in B.C. and the Yukon.

• Muscular Dystrophy programs.

Firefighters have raised money to support muscular dystrophy programs ever since a single firefighter in Boston in 1954 watched a boy next door struggle with the disease. Whitehorse firefighters have donated to this cause since 1973 and recently held their first rooftop campout (in -38 degrees) to raise awareness and funds for the neuromuscular disorder.

The society also has a community engagement mandate, as demonstrated by its bouncy castle and kiddie combat challenge, where kids can play at firefighting on Canada Day. In addition to enjoying helping people as a firefighter, O’Carroll explained that he enjoys the challenge.

“The challenge of working with people to get things done. I have learned a great deal of patience

and you have to be as persistent as the tide. The challenge of running the numbers, budgets, officetype work that most firefighters normally don’t do. The challenge of the task itself, such as the logistics of getting 2,000 presents to 662 kids in one day.”

In response to a question about which cause pulls at his heartstrings, O’Carroll talked about Share the Spirit.

“I am from Nova Scotia and Share the Spirit reminds me so much of Christmas Daddies, which helps less fortunate children in the Maritimes. Christmas has always been an extremely special time for myself. The WFCS inherited Share the Spirit from the Kinette Club, which ran the operation on a year to year basis. In that first year, after the WFCS had committed to delivering packages to a certain number of families, and the money was slow to come in, a number of us in the society were looking at pulling our lines of credit. Once we had committed, we felt like we just couldn’t let it not happen. In the end, the money did come in, but now we have a buffer to draw on at the beginning of each year, so we are not scrambling as much as that first year.”

He said it can be a sensitive issue, how money is distributed by organizations such as the WFCS. “We have the best vetting service,” he said. “We work closely with the government and other government partners to make this determination, while still protecting confidentiality. We are honored that we have been given this trust.”

So, where does the spring gala work into long-term planning? The society has come up with a 100year plan to serve the Yukon. It’s looking at ways to ensure sustainability. It wants to know it can continue to help the community during a recession when there may be financial storms. Growing the gala is one part of this plan.

O’Carroll hesitated at the question about a financial goal for the gala.

“Being our first gala, first, we just want to get through it, establish it and eventually have it become our major fundraiser.”

y When Kate Weekes plays in Whitehorse on May 2, the audience will hear something new and maybe surprising, even if they’re already fans. Having lived in the territory from 2003 to 2014, the singer-songwriter still spends several months here each year. Many Yukoners are familiar with her work. However, her new CD, Taken By Surprise, serves up something different, reflecting her artistic and personal evolution.

Weekes’ last album, released in 2014, reflected her dog-mushing, cabin-dwelling lifestyle.

“Overall the songs were at arm’s length, telling someone else’s story or focusing on the physicality of the landscape or locale,” said Weekes. “While they had emotion, I didn’t feel exposed by the words I sang.”

That’s not the case this time.

Weekes said her songs are still inspired by the North, dog mushing and travel (for example, time spent in Ontario, Quebec and Scandinavia), but are written with her personal perspective at the core, including, at times, sadness.

These songs, she said, make her feel entirely exposed.

“The song ‘Taken by Surprise’ is the heart of the album,” said Weekes. “It captures the beauty of my experience in Norway and the imagery comes from the Lofoten Islands. Contrasted with that fantastical landscape is what has become apparent to me in the last few years … that things won’t always get better, that we can lose our best friend with the end of a relationship, that not all dreams come true, that people

Although most of the material on the new CD was penned post2014, Weekes said there are strong links to the Yukon and what she’s experienced, emotionally, since leaving. For example, “A Day Called Summer” was written after being stranded for two days on a spit in the Wind River, while the river was in flood.

“The song speaks to the challenge of adapting to an urban lifestyle after spending time in the bush. Even Whitehorse can seem

like a big city after a couple of weeks in the Peel Watershed,” said Weekes.

Other songs emerged from her job in Norway as a dog mushing guide.

“I was working with a team of 50 sled dogs at a 5-star resort, a stark contrast to living in a Squatter’s Row cabin. I struggled with the commercial aspect of it. It felt removed from social consciousness, political awareness and the wilderness. At the same time, I cont’d on page 5 ...

any situations need a fire, right now! It could be an emergency situation in your group, or something you come upon as you travel on the land. It may not even be a real emergency or survival situation, but it will be real soon if you don’t do something positive.

Being rescued after going through the ice is certainly one of those situations where a fire will save the day, but even scenarios that don’t seem especially dangerous at first can take a turn.

For example, breaking through ice in the shallows, getting soaked to the skin from a sudden downpour, tipping a canoe, or sweating up on a hike and becoming hypothermic seem like lesser emergencies than falling in a frozen lake. However, the ability to quickly start a fire can make the difference in terms of avoiding a real life-or-death scenario.

A big fire will improve all these scenes but now is not the time for whittling tinder sticks or demonstrating your skills with a “onematch fire.”

If you are in a boat, or on a quad or snowmobile, you have room to carry “instant” fire starters as well as gas in the tank. A really simple one is a plastic jar full of kerosene-soaked chainsaw chips. A Bic lighter in the jar or your pocket completes the picture. Some commercial fire-lighter sticks work well, but you need many flames to last a number of minutes to get other stuff burning.

Larry has some tips for quick-start fires when getting heat can be the difference between life or death chips with a match or Bic lighter and it will burn for six to eight minutes, allowing you to build the fire around it. Dryer lint works as well as the chainsaw chips. Just keep a Ziploc near the dryer and collect the lint over a period of time.

A little preparation goes a long way in a bad situation.

paste-sized tube and ignites easily. A larger squeeze gives a bigger start to the fire. Duct tape is also easy to light and burns longer depending on the amount you use.

It is easy to make really dependable fire starters to carry with you. Take an egg carton (either 12 or 18 capacity) and fill all the egg spaces with chainsaw chips. Melt paraffin on the wood stove in an old pot, or large vegetable or coffee can on which you have pinched a small spout for pouring. When the wax is melted, use a glove to lift the pot or can and pour the melted wax onto the chainsaw chips until it’s level with the top of the tray. Allow the wax to cool and harden completely. Turn the tray upside-down and take an exacto knife or other edged tool. Cut between all the egg cones. A partial cut will suffice as you then break off each individual hardened wax/ chip-filled cone to use one at a time as a fire starter. Just light the

pring is coming and so is the merry month of May, when a choir director’s fancy turns to … tartan? Yes, the Whitehorse Community Choir will be celebrating all things Celtic in its spring concert, Ceud Mìle Fàilte (Gaelic for A Hundred Thousand Welcomes) on May 3 and 4 at the Yukon Arts Centre. There will be a riot of colour onstage with the clash of the tartans! Men in kilts!

Bagpipes and other traditional instruments! Highland dancers!

Barbara Chamberlin will conduct the choir, along with the Persephone Singers and the Chamber Choir as all three groups sing a repertoire of Scottish, Irish and Welsh songs. Chamberlin said that she has amassed a large number of choral arrangements of Celtic songs over the years. She had been thinking about a Celticthemed concert for some time before proposing it for this spring’s choral offering.

Choristers have eagerly embraced the concept and have been rehearsing since January.

The choir has many members of Celtic heritage who can’t wait to show off their clan colours. Some of them have still retained their native accents, to some degree.

The community at large also has a good representation of citizens who can lay claim to some form of Celtic background, so the choir encourages them to come out and hear some of their favourite songs. Even those who can’t claim any Celtic heritage can still enjoy hearing those lovely melodies and charming turns of phrase.

Concert-goers may recognize some common themes running through the evening. There are

Members of the Persephone Singers perform at the Rotary Music Festival a number of songs, such as the “Skye Boat Song” and “Charlie is My Darlin,’” that make reference to Bonny Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart), the leader of the ill-fated Jacobite rebellion against the English in 1745/46.

Several of the pieces, like “O, My Luve’s Like a Red, Red Rose” and “The Banks O’ Doon” feature the poetry of Robert Burns set to beautiful melodies.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, the concert includes some lovely Irish offerings such as “The Minstrel Boy,” “Mairi’s Wedding” and “Star of the County Down,” among others. The Welsh are represented by “All Through the Night,” one of the Persephone Singers’ offerings.

The choir often has guest artists joining them on the program and this spring’s show is no exception. How could you have Scottish music without the bagpipes or Highland dancers? Members of the Midnight Sun Pipe Band and local Highland dancers have been invited to participate in the Celtic celebration. Local musicians Katie Avery (violin and guitar) and Jer-

ome McIntyre (bodhrán and cajón) will add their unique touches to a number of the choral melodies.

As the concert is intended to be a celebration of all things Celtic, choristers will be decked out in many types of tartan, including the Yukon and Canadian tartans.

D

avid Geary is no stranger to the Yukon. He was here to work with Gwaandak Theatre a year ago last February.

Now he’s looking forward to seeing what Whitehorse is like when it’s warmer.

Geary is originally from New Zealand, where he has mixed roots which he describes as “Maori from the Taranaki iwi tribe, and also English, Irish, Scottish settler.” He became a Canadian citizen in 2008 and has lived in Vancouver since 2012. He teaches in the prestigious Indigenous Filmmaking program at Capilano University.

He is a playwright who works in theatre, film, TV, fiction and haiku, and is also a dramaturge, but he didn’t start out that way.

“I wanted to be a rock star,” he said. This didn’t come from his parents either, as they loved country music. So did he when he was young.

“When I went to boarding school at 13, in 1977, I got exposed to a whole lot of different music and veered towards alternative rock/punk rock/classic rock.”

Of course he went to university to study to be a lawyer, and try to develop some musical skills.

But rugby injuries hampered his attempts to play the guitar “and then I found out I couldn’t sing, or play and sing, or play … but I did like writing lyrics for existing tunes. I wrote some awful Rod Stewart-inspired lyrics.”

David Geary will be one of the mentor writers at this year’s Young Authors’ Conference, at F.H. Collins High School on May 1 and 2 The bad lyrics eventually turned into not quite so bad poetry and taking a couple of English courses changed his direction.

A first year English lit course he took as an elective introduced him to many great playwrights and a second year creative writing course.

“Suddenly I was a lot more inspired to write bad poetry than study Lord Denning and the postal-acceptance rule in contract law. So I dropped my law papers (and) picked up Shakespeare. I got a C, but the great teacher made me feel Hamlet was a real person … like me … tortured and out of sorts.”

He was asked to write a short dramatic scene and enjoyed doing it.

“I discovered I could write dialogue, joined the drama club, took drama studies and wrote short experimental plays. I was a writer. My parents were horrified.

Not resigned that I would just be a teacher (which I am now), but they were somewhat appeased at the time when I got into the NZ Women’s Weekly magazine for me acting in a play in a hot tub.”

“I went to Toi Whakaari ,the

New Zealand Drama School, to train as an actor after (university), so that’s how I paid the bills for a while afterwards, doing theatre, TV and commercials, but all the time working on my playwriting.”

As a writer, he works hard to impose structure on what he characterizes as his “fairly free-wheeling chaotic” nature.

“Thematically, I’m still a punk rocker and enjoy subverting norms and satire. I like to expose the underbelly below the normal surface. I also have a black comic streak, so I find it hard to write anything that is straight drama without a tinge of comedy. I think humour saves us.”

He has an affinity for Trickster characters in all their forms, from the Maoir Maui stories of New Zealand to the Raven and Coyote stories he’s learned in Canada.

He writes whenever he can find the time.

“Since I had kids I write whenever and wherever I can, as the windows of opportunity got smaller and smaller.

After arriving in Vancouver in 2012 “I looked after our boys for three years til they went to school and the only way I could keep my creative self alive was writing haiku on twitter on my mobile phone @gearsgeary. So that’s what I did and it has become a thing I do for fun still.”

He finds that deadlines are great motivators, either for projects or for study, as when he was doing his Masters in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. He finds that you need to write a lot and then winnow it down to get to the good stuff.

Saturday, April 27, 2019, Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre Over the years, we have taught as many as ten classes a week, hosted guest instructors, organized special events, made links with tai chi organizations the world over, and travelled afar to learn from Tai Chi grandmasters. Our chief instructor Pam Boyde achieved international recognition when she was named a disciple by Grandmaster Yang Jun of the Yang Family Tai Chi organization.

For this epic anniversary, we invite all former students and instructors who have supported us over the last three decades as well as anyone interested in learning more about Tai Chi. This free event will be in two parts: celebrating World Tai Chi & Qigong Day on the river side plaza, then moving indoors to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre Multi-purpose Room.

In 1989, our founder Cheryl Buchan offered tai chi through the City Recreation program. Within a few years, her senior students also began teaching.

A

few weeks ago, Woodcutter’s Blanket launched the latest in its expansion efforts—a microbrewery. The bar plans to offer a rotating assortment of beers which will go straight from the kegs to your glass, making the beer “as fresh as you can get it” according to Woodcutter’s co-owner, James Maltby.

This has the added benefit of allowing the team behind the beer to be agile and creative with what it’s able to offer to the growing Yukon beer scene. There is no plan to expand into bottling or kegging,

The now-complete expansion adds a modern look to the old taxidermy building converted into a pub and brewery making the bar at Woodcutter’s the only place you will be able to have a taste of these beers. The physical expansion of the bar has pushed the establishment to the limits of its property line, meaning this microbrewery has no choice but to stay micro.

The brewery itself is 280 square feet, but the team has made remarkable use of a tiny space. At top capacity, it will be able to produce 80,000 liters of beer annually. The brewmaster, Scott Shailer, said Woodcutter’s is using city water, but plans to employ various

techniques to “mimic the water from different parts of the world.”

All the beers he plans to offer will be totally unfiltered. The current plan is to roll out a changing variety of types of beers inspired by available ingredients (seasonal and local), as well as by whatever excites the team at any given moment, or what the marketplace is demanding.

“I don’t want to have to be constrained,” said Shailer, who also plans to use locally grown or harvested ingredients in the future.

“We can be pretty innovative,

pretty quickly,” added Maltby.

Woodcutter’s will be able to offer eight different brews on tap.

The plan is to maintain at least five or six at all times for tasting.

High standards and care are what the team behind Woodcutter’s wants to put into all its products.

From the food, to the cocktails, to the beers, maintaining that high standard is clearly a priority.

During last year’s massive renovations, the kitchen also got an upgrade. Chef Ayla Smith seems excited to make the most of it.

The camaraderie between chef

and brewer is apparent when the two start talking beer, food and pairing possibilities. Using local ingredients seems to be a goal shared by both. The ever evolving offerings should delight thirsty and hungry Yukoners.

Move over swans, it’s shorebird time! The shores of Swan Haven boast much more than swans and ducks. Sandpipers and snipes, yellowlegs and godwits, interpreter Jukka Jantunen will sort it all out during a short walk and talk. Rubber boots are recommended.

Ducks, grebes, and gulls cover Schwatka Lake in May. We’ll cruise the shoreline, stopping to check out the birds we see. Bring your own bike for this 10 km (return) ride along the west side of the river and lake. The terrain is flat and the surface is paved with some gravel sections.

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable.

The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

ith over 100 titles and four million books in print, Sigmund Brouwer is a bestselling author of books for children, young adults and adults.

He will be one of the mentor authors at this year’s Young Authors’ Conference on May 2 and 3, which is part of the Yukon Writers’ Festival taking place that week.

Brouwer was hooked on books and writing early on and he knows exactly why.

“By far and away, the answer is a single word—story. I was an avid reader of fiction from the day that I was hooked by the Hardy Boys series and, as a result, always dreamed of being a published author.”

When Brouwer was about 30, the first of his series, The Accidental Detectives, was accepted for publication.

“Even after my first manuscript was accepted and contracted … it still didn’t seem real. I kept waiting for someone to stop me and point out that I was running a bluff. After the manuscript to the second book in the series was accepted, I began to relax a bit more. And, finally, after the series was extended, I knew that yes, I was an ‘author.’”

As might be expected from his

early interests, he’s still all about the story.

“I tend to write plot-driven stories, but, to me, the plot won’t work until the motivations of the characters seem legitimate, so my primary focus is on figuring out why a character will keep trying to overcome the obstacles that form the plot line.”

Lot of writers will admit they are the real villains in their stories, always creating problems for their characters and putting them in peril. Brouwer actually advises

“My agent recently started doing some calculations. Many of my presentations are to whole-school assemblies of up to 400 students at a time. We realized that since my first book was published in 1990, I’ve had a chance to present to 1,000,000 students across Canada and the United States.

Devil’s Pass (2012), was also a finalist in the previous year. This one was part of a multi-author series called The Seven, and was set in the Yukon and Northwest Territories on the Canol Road.

His adult novel, Thief of Glory, was selected as a Book of the Year for the American Christy Awards and is a winBrouwer ner of the Alberta’s Readers Choice Awards.

She had survived almost six years from her first bout of breast cancer, but the treatments had not killed all the cancer cells and they had now spread through many organs. nyone who has had to say goodbye to a cherished pet will know the sadness that comes from making that final decision. Our Posie, a terrier cross that my wife and I rescued when she was 12, was now 17 and in distress. She had been our family member for five years, joining us as we crossed the country in our motorhome and travelled to Yukon.

She was missed immediately.

I don’t need to describe the pain and sadness of such a loss for me and the family.

Princess and I spent several days with family before returning to our home in rural Saskatchewan. The home felt empty and sad, but I did not feel as lonely as I might have because I had Princess to share the situation. Princess seemed to cuddle closer to me at bedtime. She also gave me an important task—to keep us both healthy with good food and exercise.

So what did I learn and what can I advise based on my experience?

Through our time together, Alexis and I always shared our life with a canine companion who came from a rescue situation. The love of our canine pals enhanced our life and provided important support in tough times. As seniors, in particular, consider adopting a rescue dog and bring them into your forever home.

The joyful opportunities just might show up at the most important times in your life. It’s amazing how much love you will find to share and how much love and companionship you will receive in return.

T

here’s no doubt things are popping with Klondike Kettle Corn. The small business went from selling a few bags of kettle corn at the 2010 Fireweed Community Market to having the product available at local grocery stores, gas stations, fundraisers, parties and via popcorn subscription box.

For Katie Young (aka Katie Popcorn), it involved moving the business ahead in sync with family time and raising two boys.

Young’s kids, Jack and Cody, were raised crawling around in the grass and watching from their playpens as their mom made kettle corn. Cody attended his first community market when he was just seven days old.

helped their confidence and independence.

They definitely understand the meaning of hard work!” she said.

Young can’t help but laugh when she thinks about the greatest challenge of running the business. As she does, Jack interrupts, looking for some kettle corn to snack on.

“Work/ life balance,” she said.

“When you have a business that is so close to your heart, that is so personal, it is challenging to not get totally immersed in it. But I’ve managed to grow the business around the needs of the boys. For example, this year, with the boys in school, I have put tons of work into running the business, marketing, getting a new website up.”

While Young wasn’t sure she was destined to become an entrepreneur before Klondike Kettle Corn

took off, she feels she has always had the organizational skills and abilities. It was kind of a natural progression, considering she’s also a foodie and has worked as a chef at a major restaurant, as well as in catering and camp kitchens.

Young makes her kettle corn in a 160 quart, hand-spun kettle. Sugar is added to the hot kernels before they pop so they can caramelize.

Once they pop, they are dumped into the sorting bin and sprinkled with salt.

But there is much more to Klondike Kettle Corn than the standard recipe, or there can be anyway.

Young uses magic mushroom kernels and any one of five essential flavors including dark chocolate and sea salt, caramel and cheddar, Buffalo blue cheese, sweet and salty, and white cheddar. She estimates she has around 30 specialty recipes and the number is growing all the time.

The growing list of specialty recipes feeds Young’s creativity. She experiments with different ingredients to make the product taste like what she’s aiming for. Working on different recipes also feeds an aspect of her greatest passion in running Klondike Kettle Corn.

“My biggest reward from running this business is being a part of the Whitehorse community. When I started this business at the Fireweed Community Market, I would have customers approach me with different ways to incorporate kettle corn in their events, whether it was a promotional giveaway at trade shows, or party favors for weddings or graduations. Now the business is at a point where we can give back to the community by sponsoring different events that bring people together. Being a part of the Fireweed Community Market, including being on the board, has really fostered that sense of community for me.”

Katie Young has built her business into a year-round production with supply to Yukon businesses also means supporting other small local businesses. In working with other local companies, Young has incorporated products or ingredients from Free Pour Jenny’s, Axe & Crocus, The Maple Rush, Elemental Farms, Cultured Fine Cheese and Bean North.

“Christmas time and summer are full-on production. After the Christmas season, I put more work into marketing and sponsorships.

It’s been really fun to be part of the great events that happen in our community, like the Yukon Quest, the Aurora 360 project and the Available Light Film Festival.”

It isn’t always easy. Young recalls a time when she was participating in Rendezvous. “It was forty below and the wind was blowing so hard we had to take down our tent and try to protect the flame for the kettle, but we still kept going and Yukoners still came out.”

So where is Klondike Kettle Corn going? Ever since she started supplying Wykes’ Your Independent Grocer with kettle corn in July 2015, she has gone into year-round production.

She also offers a popcorn subscription box, which is being taken advantage of by people all over the country. By press time, Klondike Kettle Corn will have launched a new website. Young is also working on plans to coordinate with other businesses to have her products shipped to the communities in the Yukon.

Barry is a transplanted big city guy, having moved north for the love of a Yukon woman, exploring the land and his options in semi-retirement.
