embers of the Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP) have placed the Ice Pool Tripod on the ice of the Yukon River and the tickets for the IODE Ice Guessing Contest, generally just called the Ice Pool, will be on sale at various places between Whitehorse and Dawson City until April 15.

The tripod is anchored by a cable to a boxed clock on the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, and is ready for when the ice moves during breakup some time in late April or early May. That will pull the cable lose and stop the clock.

The Yukon River took a long time to ice over this winter, but finally did so down past Moosehide.

The government’s attempts at creating an ice bridge did not succeed once again, but various DIY routes were created by locals. These are

now becoming unsafe and the river looks very unpredictable, as it has been for the last three years.

As with last year, it is possible that breakup may be fairly undramatic. Much of the ice may just rot away or sublimate.

This season is so unusual that the Percy De Wolfe Memorial Mail Race had to follow an alternate course, and was unable to make the round trip to Eagle, Alaska, and back. With the temperature on the starting morning being nearly 20 degrees higher than normal for March 21, it was no wonder.

The Ice Pool contest has been running since 1896 and has been in the IODE’s hands since the 1940s.

Breakup can happen as early as April 23 and as late as May 28, though either date is far from the norm.

Last year. it stopped the clock on May 8 at 1:25:48 p.m., but didn’t actually move much for some time after that.

The report from that year stated “the slab of ice holding the tripod merely drifted down to the area by the ferry landing and, according to a report from Glenda Bolt, spent the afternoon there.”

In 2017 in was May 3 at 10:04 a.m., but the big ice flush didn’t happen until around 1:30. Another year, the tripod broke in pieces and sank.

ach year, Earth Day focuses on a specific theme to raise awareness of a particular environmental issue we are currently facing. (Last year’s theme encouraged people to make positive changes in their lifestyles by reducing their plastic consumption.) This year, Earth Day aims to draw attention to threatened and endangered species across the planet.

Here, at home in the Yukon, there is no more notable animal than the boreal ground and Northern Mountain woodland caribou. Boreal caribou are listed as threatened on the Species at Risk Public Registry across Canada, while the Committee on the

Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated the Northern Mountain woodland caribou a Species of Special Concern.

According to the 2018 Status of Environment Report from Environment Yukon, there are 26 Northern Mountain woodland caribou herds in the territory. Four herds are increasing in size, seven are considered relatively stable, three are declining and the remaining 12 have unknown trends.

Yukon’s boreal caribou numbers are small, shared with the Northwest Territories, and considered self-sustaining.

The first part of finding solutions is always being informed of the challenges. And that is what

Earth Day is all about. This year, educate yourself on some of the threats facing our animal species here in the Yukon and around the world.

We don’t need the animals on our planet, the bee populations, or the coral reefs, to go the way of the dinosaurs or the dodo.

KALE QUINOA BURGERS INGREDIENTS:

           

1 cup quinoa 2 cups finely chopped kale ¼ cup ground flax seeds 2 eggs lightly beaten 1 shallot minced 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, oregano or savory ½ teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper ¼ teaspoon chipotle pepper 1 clove garlic minced 1 cup grated mozzarella 1 teaspoon lemon juice

DIRECTIONS:

Cook quinoa with 1 ½ cups water. Let cool for a few minutes. And ½ cup boiling water to the 1/4 ground flax seed, mix well and let cool.

Add flaxseed to quinoa. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Form mixture into patties.Bake on lightly greased cooking sheet at 375 degrees until golden brown.

A real Canadian pancake breakfast F

irst of all, let’s return to the 1930s and make our pancakes in a real heavy iron pan. The pan is ready for the mixture when you can drip a couple water droplets into the pan and they retain their shape for a few seconds. Always add a little shortening to your pancake batter to keep the pancakes from sticking to the pan.

When you put your batter into the hot pan, wait until the batter starts to bubble in the middle. Only then should you flip the pancakes over, and you should flip each pancake only once.

NORMAL PANCAKE MIX Ingredients: 1 ½ cups flour 1 egg 3 tsp baking powder 1 ¾ cups milk ½ tsp salt 3 Tbsp melted butter 3 Tbsp white sugar ¼ tsp vanilla TASTY BLUEBERRY PANCAKES Use normal pancake mix, increasing the sugar to ⅓ cup. Reduce milk to 1 ½ cups. Add 1 cup floured blueberries. Bake more slowly than normal pancakes.

Serve with melted butter and a layer of brown sugar between pancakes.

HEALTHY BANANA PANCAKES Use normal pancake mix, but add ¾ cup mashed bananas and a few grains of pepper. Reduce sugar to 2 tsp and milk to 1 ½ cups.

Suggest serving with breakfast sausage.

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES Using the normal pancake mix, substitute buttermilk for normal milk. Reduce baking powder to 1 ½ level tsp and add 1 level tsp soda dissolved in 1 tsp warm water.

APPLE PANCAKES Make the normal pancake mix, adding ¼ tsp grated nutmeg, 1 cup grated apple and ⅓ tsp soda dissolved in 1 tsp warm water.

Reduce milk to 1 ½ cups. Ideal served with ham.

Ingredients: 2 cups flour 3 eggs. well beaten 1 tsp sugar 2 cups milk 3 tsp baking powder ½ cup melted butter ½ tsp salt Combine first 4 ingredients in large bowl. Stir with spoon. In separate bowl, beat eggs. Add milk and melted butter. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until batter is smooth. Cook following waffle iron instructions.

CHRISTMAS BREAD Ingredients: 8 cups flour 2 pkg dry yeast (approx. ¼ ounce each) 1 cup sugar 2 cups milk ½ lb butter 2 eggs 1 ½ cup raisins Rind of 1 lemon 4 oz. pkg. almonds 1 pkg. glazed cherries (approx. ¼ ounce) Soak yeast in ½ cup warm water with 1 tsp sugar. Let stand for 10 minutes. Warm the milk.

Add applesauce. Mix well. Add the fruit. This will have to be done gradually. Pour into pans that have been lined with brown paper and greased. Bake at 250°F until done. Makes 3 large cakes.

Melt butter. Add sugar. Mix. Add eggs, one at a time. Sift together flour, soda and baking powder.

Add to butter and egg mixture.

A contrast in character

W

hat the constellation Cancer lacks in bright stars, it makes up for with its special deep sky resident, the Beehive open star cluster, or M44 in the Messier catalogue. At less than 600 light years (ly), the Beehive is one of our nearest open clusters. So with its 1,000+ stellar members, swarming in a 22.8 ly sphere, the Beehive emits a soft glow covering a full one and a half degree of sky, three times the diameter of the full moon.

Cancer is also home to another deep sky resident that presents an intriguing contrast to our flamboyant Beehive neighbour.

The open cluster M67 is ten times further away, at almost 6,000 ly. And with only half the stars of the Beehive within a slightly smaller diameter, M67 presents a good challenge for viewing with binoculars, alongside the bedazzling, visible-to-the-naked-eye, Beehive.

And precisely because of the bedazzlement of the Beehive upon the night sky, it has been noted by stargazers throughout the ages. In 260 B.C., the Greek poet and philosopher Aratus first made mention of it as “a faint mist” in a poem called “Phenomena,” at a time when the cluster was referred to as the Manger.

The two stars Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis, above and below the Manger (see chart), became donkeys, coming to the Manger to feed. (You see the robustness of imagination without TV or the internet.) How the Manger and its two dinner guests appeared (or not) in the sky became, like a farmers’ almanac, directives on planting times: “Watch too the Manger. Like a faint mist in the North, it plays the guide … around it, two faintly gleaming stars, not far apart nor very near but distant to the view … one to the North and one toward the South … on a sudden, when all the sky is clear, the Manger wholly disappears, while

the stars that go on either side seem nearer drawn to one another: not slight then is the storm with which the fields are deluged … ” reads the poem of Aratus.

Although the Beehive was so well known during Messier’s time that it was unlikely any comet hunter would mistake it as a candidate for another comet, Messier nonetheless made it the 44th entry in his catalogue. Some have suggested it was to “pad” his catalogue with more entries than the 42 entries of an earlier catalogue compiled by Nicolas de Lacaille. A competitive bunch, them comet hunters!

Being so much fainter, M67 wasn’t discovered until well into the era of optics. Charles Messier added the cluster to his catalogue in 1780, but it was discovered the previous year by German astronomer Johann Koehler, who described it as a “rather conspicuous nebula in elongated form.”

That is exactly what I see in my 8x40 binoculars. A conspicuous “nebula” and definitely an elongated form.

At a mere 600 million years of age, the Beehive is barely a teen within the lifespan of a star cluster.

So, although enough time has passed for some of its largest members to have popped off in supernovae, the Beehive still contains many stars much larger than our sun. (The more massive a star, the shorter its life.) The sharp pinpoints of light revealed in binoculars are some of those remaining big boys.

Messier 67 in the night sky

M67, on the other hand, is one of the oldest clusters known. At close to five billion years of age, all its massive stars are long gone, leaving only black holes or neutron stars behind as evidence of their former presence. The cluster also harbours over 200 white dwarf stars—small dense remnants of medium mass stars, up to eight times the mass of the sun. In fact, the average age of the stars in this distant cluster is about four billion years, closely matching the age of our sun.

And with more than 100 of its members being sun-like stars with similar elemental compositions, astronomers speculated that they may have found our sun’s parent cluster. Unfortunately, recent computer simulations of stellar trajectories has cast doubt on this speculation.

With five billion years under its belt, M67 has begun to take on the characteristics of a globular cluster—those ancient star clusters shepherding our Milky Way galaxy, as described in an earlier article. (“In the Realm of the Globulars,” Dec 19/18, issue 608.) With the passage of so much time, M67 has undergone a process known as “mass segregation” wherein the more massive (heavier) stars have gravitationally migrated into the core of the cluster, forcing the less massive to the outer fringes. The Beehive, being so much younger, is just in the earliest stages of this process. The core of M67 has even produced

about 30 blue stragglers, those quirky, hot, new stars that are the result of the merger of two old stars, so prevalent in the cores of globular clusters. (Ibid.)

So before our night sky is washed away in the blaze of summer solstice, I hope you can get out and enjoy the splendour of the Beehive. While there, see if you can’t bag the remote binocular target of M67. The Beehive is easily located by letting your gaze fall from the Gemini twins downward and to the left.

Again, printing off the April sky map from skymaps.com will help in locating Gemini and Cancer. If it’s relatively dark, the Beehive is easily seen without optical aid. Just give your eyes a good 10 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Now, with binoculars, see how many bees you can count within the hive. Then, still with your bins, let your gaze again fall, this time into the vicinity of M67, as shown on the chart here.

Also notice on the chart how the pair of stars on each side of M67 (including Acubens) seem to point to the cluster. Those four stars will be in your binocular view, with the “conspicuous nebula in elongated form” of M67 comfortably sheltered between the two pair.

I love the contrasting nature of these two clusters in our night sky. The photons from the splashy display of the Beehive and the feeble photons from M67 in their 6,000 year journey at the speed of light, hitting your eyeballs at that very moment, can’t help but tickle the imagination in exciting ways. Enjoy!

n 1990, a number of organizations joined together to merge the Young Authors’ Conference (YAC) and the National Book Festival into the more far-reaching Yukon Writers’ Festival. The goal was to highlight Canadian literary arts in the Yukon.

Five writers, including one from the Yukon, will participate in a week-long series of events (May 1 to 4), sponsored by Yukon Education and Yukon Public Libraries.

The London Tower Ravens “If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.”

the ravens have been protecting the Crown since the very dawn of the British monarchy.

It’s a nice thought and perhaps a sellable storyline, except for one big problem. King Arthur never existed.

He was no more real than the Wizard of Oz. Oh, there WAS a fierce Welsh warrior named Arthur Pendragon, who may or may not have slayed 920 enemies in the Battle of Wherever with his trusty sword (not named Excalibur), but the only story written about it does not contain the word “Rex” (which means “King.” In other words, there may or may not have been an Arthur from ancient Wales but he was NOT known as a king.

Consider the following folklore before ordering your reserved seat at the Round Table which was added to the fable of Camelot hundreds of years later. (as were Guinevere, King Arthur’s wife, and Lancelot, his protégé.)

“It should be noted from whence the legend of the ravens in the tower came. There is a tale in the Mabinogion, whereby the Welsh giant Bran Fendigeid—or Bran the Blessed—raised an army to battle the Irish, whose king had married Bran’s sister Branwen, but had grown to cruelly abuse her. The battle was successful, but Bran fell, whereupon he had his men cut off his head. This they carried for some number of years and it talked to them the whole time, but eventually they buried it under the White Hill in London, facing south so that Bran could look out over the channel and

guard against invaders.

“It is said that King Arthur dug the head up, believing that he should be the defender of the island, and it is further said that the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes, as well as the Danes, invaded and overran much of the country as a result.

Bran, incidentally, is Welsh for raven.” -Andrew Gruffudde, website commenter.

It was only natural for ravens to be attracted to the tower over the centuries, since it was also a prison with a torture dungeon and a crowded execution site. Both Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour lost their heads in the green courtyard, not to mention thousands of traitors who had their skulls spiked on nearby London Bridge until they rotted away and fell into the Thames. ou may have noticed the above quotation comes to you without attribution.

That’s for good reason. Nobody seems to know who muttered it or even if it was ever uttered at all. The Tower ravens of London are arguably the most famous birds in history. They’re also the most difficult to explain because of the thin separation between fact and fiction, or mythology and historical truth. Indeed, to the erstwhile myth-checker, the chore would have been onerous were it not so entertaining trying to figure out which was which.

To make it easier for those who follow in this quest, here is a hot tip—don’t believe anything you read about the tower ravens that happened before 1883, the first time any connection was made in print between domestic ravens

and the venerable castle.

The following is an excerpt from the castle’s official website: “Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7 and enlarged and modified by successive sovereigns, today the Tower of London is one of the world’s most famous and spectacular fortresses. During its 900-year history, it has been a royal palace and fortress, prison and place of execution, mint, arsenal, menagerie and jewel house.”

All that is true. What’s not true is that the ravens were initially tasked with being the guardians of the Crown jewels contained within. That’s just a small groaner though, compared to this whopper. Some fanciful writers of the age attributed the lede quote to King Arthur himself, on the mistaken premise that

It was only natural for ravens to be attracted to the tower over the centuries all, are scavengers. The infamous Tower of London was an endless source of sustenance until the Victorian age kicked in near the end of the 19th century, when the Arthurian myth gained steam, if not credence. There was no mention of domesticated ravens with their wings clipped, but there were definitely a lot of wild ravens perched on the walls waiting for the next meal.

It was the very embodiment of macabre and appeared to have a royal blessing as the ravens were protected by royal decree.

So much for 900 years of romantic tower mythology, but the hard cold truth is much more recent and factual. Many 20th century observers have stated the raven tale about protecting the monarchy and empire became publicly prominent during the Nazi Blitz bombings of the Second World War, in which the tower, closed to visitors for the duration, was hit by 15 bombs, three rockets and numerous incendiaries. Twenty-three people and two ravens were killed during these attacks.

“It was during this time the legend actually began that Brit-

ain would fall if the ravens departed the tower,” according to one prominent Victorian historian.

It was also rumoured that the ravens were early detectors of planes, bombs and rockets.

When Winston Churchill heard they were down to their last raven at the tower, he acted quickly by recruiting six more, inducting them into the home defense forces and making them members of the military, subject to military rules and discipline. (One, named Grog, was cashiered for spending too much time at a nearby pub.) The “British Bulldog” wasn’t taking any chances about the warning being fact or myth. Once the public was aware of them, the safety of the tower ravens was a matter of national security. It has remained so ever since.

These ravens didn’t defeat the dreaded Nazis, but they played an important role in perking up the morale of the men and women who did. Today, they are thriving as one of the most popular tourist draws in London.

The role of ravenmaster is taken on by one of the Beefeaters, or Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London, who staff and guard the tower.

They are all ex-soldiers and must have served 22 years, have reached the position of Warrant Officer and have a good conduct medal.

Mr. Skaiffe served for 24 years as a machine-gunner and an expert instructor in wilderness survival and POW resistance.

The names of the current tower ravens are Jubilee, Harris, Gripp, Rocky, Erin, Poppy and Merlina. They are identified by different coloured bands, called socks, on their legs or talons The ravens are fed twice a day by the Ravenmaster. They dine on a special diet of mice, chicks, rats and assorted raw meats. As a special treat, they are given dog biscuits soaked in blood.

Ravens are natural scavengers, feeding predominantly on carrion.

They are kept in luxury at her Majesty’s Royal Palace, where Skaiffe has begun a royal family, of sorts, of future tower ravens (they mate for life and procreate normally). There are currently 17 offspring on the “farm team.” The active duty roster is six birds, with one spare standing by. The London Tower is a “must visit” for tourists. Skaiffe has written a UK bestseller titled “Ravenmaster, My Life With the Tower Ravens” which can be purchased on Amazon.

Fear should never be a deterrent Advice from author Jan Redford

Earth Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting the health of our environment, and of preserving our breathtaking landscapes and wildlife. Let’s all do our part to conserve our eco-systems, for us and future generations.

J

an Redford describes herself as a compulsive journal writer who always knew that she would like to be an author.

“I remember filling pages with squiggly lines when I was about four or five, pretending I was a writer. As I got older, writing is what grounded me, clarified my experiences, allowed me to trust my interpretation of the world. It’s almost like nothing is real or understandable until I write it down.”

It was not, however, a straight line from desire to reality. Her online bio describes a convoluted career path.

“I’ve worked as a waitress, pizza cook, housekeeper at a fly-in fishing camp in the Northwest Territories, assistant beekeeper, geoduck cleaner, cook for loggers, farmer, tree planter, climbing instructor, assistant Outward Bound instructor, radio dispatcher, pro ski patrol, forestry silviculture technician, elementary French Immersion teacher, substitute teacher and a writer.”

She spent her early years in the North, in Inuvik, Fort Smith and Whitehorse, where her father was the Administrator of the Yukon, before heading south for the next 40 years. Her first trip back was to attend the Atlin Writers’ Festival last summer.

She’s thrilled to be coming back again so soon.

Redford’s literary influences include Erica Jong, Anne Lamott and Nora Ephron. She has written some fiction and poetry, but says that her present niche is non-fiction. She often draws on her own life experiences, as she did in her memoir, End of the Rope: Mountains, Marriage and Motherhood.

She has some advice for would-be writers.

“To a person who is passionate about writing, I would say throw yourself into it without holding back. Everyone is afraid of failure, of never getting published, of criticism—even the most highly published authors— so that fear should never be a deterrent.”

Redford is this year’s guest of Yukon Public Libraries, and will be travelling to a number of rural communities during the Yukon Writers’ Festival between April 30 and May 4.

She had already started her memoir, which took her about 12 years to finish.

“It is a lot of work, this becoming-a-writer business,” she said. “So you’ve got to really love the process, not just the promise of some kind of outcome, like a published book.”

Her writing process involves a lot of planning, some of which sounds a bit like the way Robert Service used to write in his cabin in Dawson.

“Because I’m very visual and kinaesthetic, I pin up huge sheets of paper and take a bunch of markers and go crazy.

I write lists, draw mind maps, flow charts, timelines, pictures, etc., until it looks like I’ve plastered my brain all over my walls.

It’s very messy, but sometimes it works”.

She said she veers between being hyper-focussed on her writing and finding all kinds of distractions to avoid it. She keeps lists to help her focus and she ticks things off as she accomplishes them.

“I tend to stay in the planning stage for a very long time.

Bike garage sale allows for good deals on great bikes

t’s the ultimate garage sale, especially if you’re the type to keep more bikes than cars in your garage.

This spring, the Contagious Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) is hosting its annual bicycle garage sale.

Anyone can bring a bike (or bikes) to Shipyards Park on May 4 and leave them with CMBC members to be sold. The trade-off is a CMBC donation of 10 per cent of the sale price.

It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for the organization, which uses the money for tools to groom trails and for regular donations to Single Track to Success and the Youth Achievement Centre.

“We made $3,500 last year,” said Maude Craig, with CMBC. “People are selling their really good bikes, so 10 per cent of a really good bike can be a couple hundred bucks.”

Craig said funds will also go to support a new mountain bike festival called Klondike Krankfest.

The festival, being held July 12 to 14, will take place at Mount Sima.

“This will replace 24 Hours of Light (a 24-hour mountain bike race the club usually organizes),” said Craig. “The intent of that is to have a mountain bike festival

Craig said the event is intended for all ages and all kinds of riders, so programming reflects that.

There will be downhill and enduro races as well as bike demonstra-

tions, maintenance workshops and more.

Craig said the mountain biking community in the Yukon has expanded in recent years. Last year, CMBC hosted a winter fatbiking event called Five Hours of Daylight. It was attended by 50 people versus the 15 in attendance the previous year.

“And more and more people get into it every summer,” she said, noting that people are asking for skills clinics ranging from how to ride slab and how to hit jumps, to how to be more comfortable and more aggressive on the trails.

The summer calendar on the CMBC webpage is rammed with

events including biathlon bike nights, nights organized for woman-identifying riders, and King of the Canyon, an August cross-country race held on Grey Mountain each year.

If you don’t think you’ve got the right bike to ride this season, chances are you’ll find it at the bike garage sale. Craig said more than 40 bikes sold in the first hour of last year’s event.

The sale takes place at Shipyards Park, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Payment is accepted in the form of cash or cheque. Those who want to sell bike-related gear and accessories can rent a table to do so for a small fee.

Icycle Sport, which is sponsoring the event, will have staff onsite to offer advice and help size people to bikes.

Concretions - shapely time capsules

Part Nine Concretions are not shaped by running water or fabricated by humans, nor are they dinosaur eggs. They are fascinating geological formations that come in the most interesting shapes. Concretions are time capsules holding clues into the past geologic record.

C

oncretions are widespread in sedimentary rocks worldwide, including the Yukon.

They have also been found on Mars. The first concretions formed hundreds of millions of years ago.

They formed in almost every geological time period since and are still being formed today. They can have an irregular shape, but most often they look like cannon balls, perfectly rounded, or like the kind of saucer-shaped UFOs you’d see in a 1950s sci-fi movie.

They range in size from microscopic to several metres across.

Concretions are harder than the surrounding rock they formed in.

This allows them to erode intact out of the softer rock. In some locations, many of these eroded concretions will be scattered all over the ground. Quite often they are on beaches where waves have pounded them out of the surrounding rocks.

They inspire place names such as: Valle de la Luna, Cannonball River, Kettle Point, Bowling Ball Beach, Pumpkin Patch and Rock City. Here in the Yukon, there is Thunderegg Creek, slightly misnamed as they are not true thundereggs. (Real thundereggs are formed from volcanic rock and have different minerals inside, but they can look like concretions from the outside.)

Concretions form mainly in shale, sandstone and siltstone. A chemical reaction takes place to cement localized portions of the host sediment. Concretions form best in sediments that are in the very early stages of hardening into rock. The clay cliffs in Whitehorse are a good example of this. The silt and sand has been deposited, but it will be millions of years yet before they harden into rock.

The concretion starts with a seed or nucleus within the sediment. Quite often it is something organic like a shell fragment, twig, leaf, fish bones or animal feces.

When groundwater reaches these organics, they start to breakdown.

They release elements and compounds such as ammonia, calcium and carbon. This changes the acidity (pH) of the groundwater around the nucleus. If the groundwater is high in calcium, the change in pH causes the mineral calcite to precipitate out as a solid around the nucleus.

If conditions are right and there is a good supply of calcium in the groundwater, the process continues. Calcite starts depositing out in all directions in concentric rings and the concretions grow. Observations have shown they can grow as fast as one to 10 centimetres outwards every year.

If the sediments are very consistent in porosity and composition, the concretion grows outward in a perfect sphere. If there are layers in the surrounding sediment that are less porous, such as a clay seam, the concretion will tend to grow flattened. It will spread in a horizontal direction and become oval or disc-shaped. If the sediment is very inconsistent, concretions can grow in irregular shapes.

Calcite is the most common cement in concretions. Cement can also be iron oxide, silica (quartz), pyrite and other minerals. It all depends on the local conditions.

Calcite in groundwater could come from a nearby limestone, or from shells within the host sediment.

Iron would come from the breakdown of iron-bearing minerals.

No matter what the cement, the process is the same. A good example of how this process works is illustrated in the Four Corners area of the southwest United States.

The Navajo Sandstone in that area is rich in iron oxide and the mineral hematite. The word hematite comes from the Greek for ‘blood-like’ because of its red colour.

In some areas the red sandstone has been “bleached” white by groundwater flowing through it, collecting the iron and moving it away. The host sandstone can take on a beautiful red and white striped appearance. The concre-

tions formed from the iron-rich water are a bright red colour.

In 2004, spherical blueberrysized objects were found by the NASA Mars exploration rover, Opportunity. These turned out to be hematite concretions. These ‘blueberries’ in the Endurance and Eagle Craters are very similar in size and composition to ones found in the Navajo Sandstone in Utah.

Some concretions have cracks running through their interior.

These are called ‘septaria.’ These can form exotic patterns and be filled with different minerals that add to the uniqueness and beauty of each formation. The cracks are thought to occur when the inside of some concretions first start to dry.

They can tell scientists the direction of ancient groundwater flow and pollen trapped in concretions can give the age and environment in which the sediments were deposited.

The nucleus itself can be the most interesting part of a concretion. Fossil shells or imprints of the original organism can be preserved.

In salt marshes along the English Channel, iron-carbonate concretions have been growing around shrapnel and unexploded bombs from World War II. Some have grown to a size of 40 centimetres since the end of the war.

Along the Porcupine River, about 15 kilometres downstream of Old Crow, is a layer of concretions in a clay/silt bluff. In 1997, an oval-shaped concretion about 40 by 70 centimetres in size was recovered from the area. It was already naturally split down the middle. When it was opened up, there was a perfectly preserved impression of a whitefish, 40 centimetres long.

tion. They determined the fish was somewhere between one and two million years old. The preserved detail on the fossil was good enough to establish it as the oldest known whitefish of that genus on the planet.

Pollen inside the concretion identified the types of trees and shrubs that were around at the time. Researchers were able to determine the fish lived in a lake in a slightly cooler climate than at present.

Throughout the world, concretions have connections to Indigenous cultures. In the ancestral villages of the Four Corners Indigenous people, many iron oxide concretions have been found. They were used as cooking stones. They were also used ceremonially. Red ochre was made from the hematite and used as a pigment for dyeing and rock paintings.

The Maori people of New Zealand, near the famous Moeraki Boulders on the south island, believe that the boulders on the beach were eel baskets that washed ashore when a legendary canoe sunk. The concretions there are spherical and measure up to three metres in diameter.

The Chippewas of the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation on Lake Huron have made it a priority in the preservation of their culture to preserve concretions on their territory.

Concretions can be found in many places in the Yukon. Places like Thunderegg Creek west of Haines Junction, the Watson River and in shale around kilometre 210 of the Dempster Highway. Elongate concretions up to five metres long have been found in the Richardson and Ogilvie Mountains. They can be in any sedimentary rock you come across including shale, siltstone, sandstone and limestone. Where groundwater conditions are right the many “clay” or silt cliffs around the Yukon are good areas to look.

Larry Leigh shares some helpful tips on how Ziploc bags are handy in the bush

W

e all know that Ziploc bags are unbeatable for packaging the individual parts of your lunch, but they are far more versatile than that. Except for needing scissors or a knife to open the package, vacuumsealing is even better than Ziploc, though the process is expensive and good for only one use.

Ziplocs are watertight, so they can be used to carry liquids (carefully), or to keep water away from items you want to stay dry.

Anything from prepared dry bannock mix to socks, underwear and medications fit into one of the clear plastic bags, which come in various sizes. It can rain for days and the canoe can overturn and the items in your Ziploc bags will still be dry.

Electronics including phones, cameras and GPS devices are easily-accessible, yet well-protected in the medium-sized bags. In a pinch Ziplocs containing reheatable meals can be immersed in gently boiling water until the food is hot enough to eat. Raw eggs can be cooked the same way.

Cut a piece of Ensolite sleeping pad a little smaller than the Ziploc

and stick the hooks of fishing flies into one or both sides of the pad.

Then slip the pad into the bag and seal the zip. There you have a very light, inexpensive and flexible fly pouch.

It is important to use only highquality zip-seal bags as the cheaper ones are often of a lower quality and do not reseal very well.

Anything done with a Ziploc can be done with a vacuum sealer bag, but the latter is usually somewhat stronger and makes for a smaller package with all the air sucked out.

As stated above, these are only good for a single use and are more expensive when you calculate the cost per bag and include the price of the vacuum sealer unit. These bags are tough though, so if the cost is acceptable, they work well.

Both Ziplocs and vacuum bags are excellent for packaging meat for freezing. Fish is better done in the vacuum bag, as all air is removed and the fish stays fresher longer. Whether packaging fish or meat, a second layer of freezer paper is necessary because, when frozen, the plastic in either bag becomes brittle and breaks easily when things are moved around in the freezer. This results in air getting in, drying out the product and causing “freezer burn” to ruin it.

Ziplocs and vacuum bags can be washed, rinsed and dried to be reused. This cuts down on waste and comes in handy for other purposes.

he Air North First Light Image Festival will compete with a Steven Page concert this year, but organizer Mark Kelly said ticket sales are already going strong for the photography fest, now in its third year.

“We’re not sold out yet, but as of (April 8) the workshops are 70 per cent sold out and evenings are doing well,” he said.

Considering there’s still a couple weeks to go before the April 27 event (taking place at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre), that’s a good place to be. And, Kelly added, this year’s stellar lineup should continue to draw attendees right up until the doors open.

First Light is a daylong celebration of all things photo-relat-

ed. Kelly said it draws everyone from professional and part-time photographers, to hobbyists and those who may never have picked up a camera. The programming is equally varied, to cater to as broad a cross-section of people as possible.

Kelly said the Yukon attracts photographers. He thinks they’re initially drawn by the landscape, but they eventually realize there’s something more keeping them here—something like what he noticed when he came to the territory decades ago.

“There’s a freedom (in the Yukon),” he said. “Even though you’re a small population you can still make yourself here. You can get off the plane, or out of the

And everybody will just be like ‘oh hey that’s Bob Jones, he’s a photographer.’”

Kelly himself was a therapist for 27 years before he decided to focus on photos. He said there are

a few full-time professional photographers in the Yukon, but a lot of people balance it with side gigs.

“I also think that’s a good thing,” he said. In some cities, when people ask what you do, you have to have a good, solid, one-note answer. He likes to hear that people have more than one thing on the go as much as he himself likes to have than one thing on the go.

One of the workshops that speaks to that diversity is Kanina Holmes’ presentation on pursuing a passion project. Holmes, editor of Yukon North of Ordinary, will talk about how to get that backburner idea off your mind and into print.

Additional speakers include Yellowknife photog Angela Gzowski, who has worked with Canadian Geographic, Reader’s Digest, Vice, Netflix and more, and Vancouver’s Nick Didlick. Didlick has photographed the Olympics 13 times and will speak on sports photography.

Kelly said the festival board also took a cue from attendees, many of whom said they wanted to learn to write captions to ac-

company images and Instagram posts, as well as how to pitch ideas to editors. To meet that demand, Whitehorse writer Eva Holland will host a workshop on writing vivid descriptions.

In addition to talks and workshops, the festival also hosts three photo contests, including one for youth, one for Instagram photos and an open competition. Prizes include Air North flights, cameras and accessories and publication of winning photos in Yukon North of Ordinary and What’s Up Yukon.

Earth Day reflections A new movement for environmental action

T

he first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 as a series of peaceful demonstrations against growing air and water pollution. Almost 50 years on, it has grown into a global event. According to the Earth Day Network, “more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in the largest civic-focused day of action in

the world.”

It’s not surprising that Earth Day has grown so significant. As the evidence of human impact on the Earth’s climate continues to mount, a global movement to protect the environment has grown alongside it. Decades of inaction on climate change have inspired generations of activists dedicated

to solving the most important social, environmental and economic issue of our time.

A recent report commissioned

by Environment and Climate Change Canada shows that Canada’s North is warming at more than three times the global average. Around the country, our oceans are becoming more acidic

and Arctic sea ice is melting rapidly, leading to further warming.

Animal populations and habitats are declining, soils are being lost and extreme weather events are becoming more common. The global climate crisis is inextricably linked to our way of life. Our pursuit of a four-planet lifestyle (the idea that if everyone on the planet consumed as much as the average Canadian, we would need four Earths to sustain us) is overwhelming the Earth’s living systems to the point that we have altered the planet.

So what can we do?

Individual behaviour changes are one way we can attempt to lower our own environmental footprint.

Refusing disposable products is a start. By saying no to single-use items, we are sending a message to producers that we want our products redesigned. After all, waste is just a product of bad design. We can live simply. We can bring our own bags to the grocery store and refill our reusable mugs.

We can shop local and choose products with recycled or minimal packaging. Composting our organic waste helps to create new soils for growing local food and prevents the release of methane

Look online and you will find countless suggestions for how we can take responsibility for our individual impacts. Unfortunately, reducing our own impacts has limits. Our individual behaviours can only do so much in a system designed for endless economic growth. According to the Carbon Majors Database, just 100 fossil fuel companies have been responsible for 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988.

However, things are changing and we are in the midst of a new climate movement. In March, Greta Thunberg, a Swedish youth activist, not even old enough to vote, led more than one million students in a global school strike for the climate. Growing consumer demand is forcing governments to regulate, producers to redesign and grocery stores to unpackage.

Saving our environment means not only reducing our own consumption, but also challenging the system that protects corporate interests at the expense of people and ecosystems. This Earth Day and every day after until things change, we must fight for the planet—after all, it’s the only one we’ve got.

LARP, or not LARP, how’s that a question?

T

he Company of the White Wolf is Whitehorse’s medieval combat fighting group, but there is a common misconception that their activities can be classified as live action role-playing, aka LARPing. Live Action Role-Playing involves dressing up in costume and

enacting the type of interactive role-playing game that would normally be confined to kitchen tables or online in games such as World of Warcraft. It has gained some mainstream recognition through feature films including Role Models and Knights of Badassdom.

Due to the medieval armour and pageantry surrounding the events, casual observers will often refer to the various tournaments held by the Company of the White Wolf as LARPing, but there are major differences between the two activities. And these differences are

In previous interviews, company member Land Pearson has noted previously that the group hopes to be recognized as a sport-variant for the purposes of competition.

When differentiating the two, the single largest consideration is that the medieval combatants are competing for real, as themselves.

“Joe” may be dressed up in armour, but he’s still fighting as Joe from Whitehorse. Their individual martial skills and fitness levels are what determines the outcome of their fights, the same way it would for a boxer or mixed martial artist. An apt comparison would be an armed eastern martial art, like kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art where combatants use bamboo swords and armour. In fact, it may be useful to consider medieval fighting as an armed western martial art.

LARPing, on the other hand, is an enactment of a fictional realm where you are adopting the persona of you “player character,” or PC. Joe from Whitehorse is more likely to be Joblum the Brave of Narnia than simple old “Joe.” The skills or actions participants can undertake are dictated by their PC’s statistics or skills. For example, an out-of-shape teen could play a large muscled warrior capable of overpowering all opponents. This would be reflected

The objective of the group is to tell a story that is crafted especially for the activity. In that respect, it may be better to think of LARPing as akin to hosting a play or murder mystery dinner party, where individuals play the role of a character.

This acting aspect of LARPing contrasts with the real nature of medieval fighting. Pearson will be heading to the International Medieval Combat Federation World Championships again this May and will be competing as Land Pearson of Team Canada, against competitors from numerous other countries. While the event itself will feature ritualized entrances and announcements, these are no different from the ritualized opening of other sports events, like anthems before hockey, soccer teams entering onto the pitch, or bowing to your opponent in karate.
