Jeff Wolosewich and The Dark Fruits released a new album on March 1

he Dark Fruits kind of accidentally ended up with an album.

Three years ago, singer Jeff Wolosewich booked time at Jordy Walker’s studio, planning to record a single song. The next thing he knew, he’d laid down bed tracks for more than 20 songs.

“The guys (Walker and musicians Micah Smith and Patrick Docherty) just played so well on those songs and I was so into it,”

The Dark Fruits released their first album March 1. They play Simapalooza on April 5 Wolosewich said over the phone a few weeks after the March 1 release of Authors of Affection, the album that came out of their efforts. “I got into it and it was like a feedback loop of them inspiring me with their playing and, I was hoping, me inspiring them to play better and better.”

Wolosewich hadn’t written music since he was in his 20s. (In fact, the one song he had planned to record with Walker was written then.) At that time, he was in a band called The Scarfs that played around B.C., while he was attending Simon Fraser University.

But as his 20s got away from him, so did the time to write.

Not that he has loads of time these days either. Wolosewich is a department head at Yukon College and he also has four kids.

Still, he said spending time in the studio reminded him how much he loves making music.

“I love lots of things, but this is one of those things that’s a part of who I was and for many reasons, I just didn’t do it.”

The result is a 13-song record and (so far) three music videos, including one that won the audience choice award at the 2018 Yukon Film Society’s 48 Hour Music Video Challenge.

Wolosewich said there’s no intentional theme to the album, but that he feels a “coming of ageness” to the lyrics, even if he’s writing from a different place now.

“A lot of rock and roll songs are about love and break-ups and I’m not going through break-ups right now, but it’s so easy because I have kids that tell me that they don’t love me anymore all the time,” he said.

“You clearly feel I went too far, ok, forgive me you’re my star, my words were not a gracious start,” Wolosewich sings on the track. He details the fight they had from opposite sides of the room and the way she walked away when all he wanted to do was hold her. It’s a touching tune that works on multiple levels once you know what it’s about.

“I like love songs that are like collages, where the imagery is all over the place,” he said. “It can get a bit predictable otherwise.”

When he compares his songwriting now with what he was doing when he was 20, he said he’s more intentional about the words he chooses.

Often I’ll write a song and think about the sounds of the words … writing (in my 20s) I think they were less streamlined. Now I would think of what the whole song is about and it would all sort of lead to that. Everything in there is there for a reason.”

Ultimately, he said he’s less concerned with what people think about the songs and more interested in just knowing that people listen to them.

There’s an opportunity to do that on April 5 when The Dark Fruits play alongside Soda Pony, Paris Pick and the Pricks and more at Simapalooza, an opportunity Wolosewich said he’s grateful for.

“We’re a studio-centric band, so to be able to get a live show like that is going to be a great.”

Going forward, he said touring the record will be difficult.

It’s hard enough to be a Vancouver touring band, let alone a band that has to spend $2,000 just to get to Vancouver. He said the Dark Fruits will be aiming for some local shows this summer, at festivals and events in and around Whitehorse.

I

f you don’t make it fun, they won’t like it. Going out again will be unlikely. In that respect, it’s like summer fishing, only it’s cold as well as boring. Kids need to be entertained and that’s your job. They also do better if they have stuff to eat and numerous cups of hot chocolate to drink.

Hot dogs, smokies, marshmallows and s’mores are all quick and easy on a fire near the shore.

Initially, ice-fishing can cost some money to buy a shelter-tent, auger, strainer and tackle. The costs can be reduced by buying used stuff, making it yourself, or waiting for the gear to go on sale as it frequently does at Canadian Tire. A hand-auger works well to do a minimum number of holes and a six-inch blade is much easier to cut through the ice than an eight-inch cutter. A quality gas or battery-powered auger, if affordable, makes it easy to cut as many holes as you need to find the fish.

“Pop-up” tents and shelters are often less than $300 on sale. As the name suggests, they’re quick to put up and take down. Screwin ice anchors are necessary unless you enjoy chasing your tent.

The interior can be furnished with fold-up camp chairs and a Coleman stove that takes white gas or propane. All of your food and equipment can be pulled on a plastic sled, which slides easily even with that load in it. A couple of old mid-sized pots can be used to heat the water for hot chocolate, tea, or to boil the wieners. If no stove is available, consider taking a couple of thermos containers full of hot water or hot chocolate.

If your household has a snowmobile and skimmer to carry gear, then you can travel a greater distance to catch fish. It’s always a good idea to travel in pairs, as snow-machines do break down and the extra machine can get everybody back to the truck.

As far as entertainment for the youngsters, take along a light shovel. (which you’ll need anyway to clear around the holes.) Kids love building snow-forts or just making a big snow pile. A soccer ball will occupy them for a time and, if they are readers, a couple of books or puzzles is a good idea.

They always do better if they have a buddy along with them.

Of course, catching a fish will

really get them interested, so it’s important that they keep an eye on their lines. Put a bear bell on the tip of their rod so it rings when the fish takes the bait.

Tackle can be purchased, ready to go with hooks, lures etc., for not too much money, but ice fishers have also been using handlines (wrapped around a piece of wood) for centuries.

I suggest not introducing them to ice-fishing when it is very cold, as some activities require you to remove your gloves for a short time. It then takes a long time to get your hands warm again.

Late March and early April are my favourite ice-fishing times.

There is warmth in the sun and the long winter is coming to an end.

urlburt Enterprises is a well-known Yukon supplier of bug-killed firewood.

I’ve been buying my woodstove firewood from them for years.

Recently, Bob (like myself, an Ontario transplant) handed me a small package of 24 small cubes of fire starter from Hurlburt Enterprises. I have seen many fire starter cubes on the market and I stay away from them because of the bad chemical smell they disperse when lit. Willing to try anything though, the next morning I put wood in the stove, set the Hurlburt fire starter under it and struck a match. Within seconds there was a six-inch flame. After a minute, the wood ignited.

This seemed to good to be true, so I cleared out a spot behind the garage, got some small twigs and made a little eight-inch teepee of them. I placed split wood against the teepee, a fire starter below it and struck a match to it. Again, a six-inch flame rose up and, within a minute, I had a small campfire.

The objective of this was to see if there was any chemical smell. The fire starter passed the test. The small cubes are made of

certified wood wool and paraffin wax, wound together in inch-long cubes. A $5 package contains 24 cubes.

I immediately saw the advantage of them for camping expeditions, especially when the weather is damp, and for getting the backyard fire pit going quickly.

The next day, I went to Hurlburt (located on Burns Road, no pun intended) and bought six packs. I divided them between emergency survival containers, my camping trailer, the basement (for the woodstove) and a camping pack.

Of course, in a pinch, nature also provides fire starter. Cattails are a good emergency fire starter. The fresh young stalks are also a natural food source that tastes much like celery. The lint from your clothes dryer is also a fire starter, though I don’t recommend using it in your house woodstove.

Always carry a lighter into the outdoors. That way, in an emergency, if you need an outdoor fire, look for the dry needles of a cedar tree. They will certainly

help get a fire going.

One of the best books I have in my library is published by Outdoor Life and written by Tim MacWelch.

It encompasses 221 primitive and wilderness survival skills. I would strongly recommend it for any group that teaches outdoor skills.

This is a great book for the family that really wants to know more about the outdoors, how to survive, what plants you can eat and what plants not to eat. There is also a section on building a fire pit and wilderness oven. My own tip for this endeavour is to be careful with the stones you use, especially if they’re shell rock. Shell rock, created under pressure over thousands of years, can explode when heated to excess.

Saying of the week: Last December I turned 86 years, so I leave you with this: In every senior’s body is a youngster saying “what the hell happened?”

A Commemoration of the Yukon’s WWI Fallen Soldiers T

his slender volume contains brief biographies and photographs of the men from the Yukon who fought and died for Canada between 1914 and 1918.

Seven of the enlisted died in 1919, but are recorded as still being in active service.

Many of their names are recorded on cenotaphs or memorial plaques in Dawson City or Whitehorse. Some were missed. The authors ferreted them out through a variety of other sources. In one of the introductions, the authors note that the “Yukon Fallen can be found in fifty-six locations … on four continents.”

Many are buried in memorial cemeteries in France and Belgium. Some are buried in parts

of England. Some bodies were returned to Canada. For a number of the entries in the book, there is no known burial location and their deaths are simply noted on monuments and in record books.

Remembering that today’s Yukon capital was just a fraction of its present size, and relatively unimportant during this period, it will come as no surprise to read that many of these soldiers were living in Dawson, then the territorial capital, when they enlisted.

(2017). It contains the papers delivered at the 2016 conference, The North and the First World War. It was during the lead-up to this conference that the original list of names of the Fallen began to be compiled.

Whitehorse Legion #254 is the copyright holder of this book. The introduction notes that a number of people were essential to the creation of the book. Those individuals include Peggy D’Orsay, a former archivist with the Yukon Archives; Tim Popp, a historian with a special interest in memorabilia from the First World War; and Max Fraser, formerly with Lost Moose and now a filmmaker with a special interest in Joe Boyle. (One of the big names in Yukon’s First World War history.)

It is Fraser’s photo of Dawson’s Victory Gardens that graces the cover. Each of the soldiers between pages 27 and 114 has a page devoted to himself, showing rank, regimental number (where available), regiment and date of death, along with either a photograph or regimental insignia at the top of the page.

This is followed by a brief account of his place of birth, employment and residence in the Yukon and service record. A line or two at the bottom of the page indicates where he is buried or commemorated.

The entries are in alphabetical order, but there is a listing in chronological order at the back of the book. There is also a list of 12 men whose names were found during the project, but whose service records couldn’t be found to match. It is not known exactly what happened to them. Perhaps this information will surface as a result of this book.

Musical time travel

The Guild Theatre opens its run of the Tony-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone on Thursday, April 4

W

ith the stage still in darkness, a disembodied voice expresses the speaker’s dislike for plays that require theatre-goers to interact with performers who break the traditional fourth wall. When the lights rise on the latest Guild Theatre production, the speaker does precisely that, by addressing the audience directly. For the duration of the evening, things are not necessarily what they seem.

At the start, the character known as Man in Chair sits alone in a nondescript apartment, preparing to listen (for the umpteenth time) to his favourite record—the cast recording of a 1928 Broadway musical called The Drowsy Chaperone.

Immediately, his apartment becomes transformed into an elaborate theatre set on which the action of the fictional piece unfolds spectacularly in his reverie.

“We’re at liberty to be as bold, or to have as much fun as we want, because the Man in Chair has never actually seen the show,” said director Jessica Hickman. “This is

all through their imagination as they’re listening to the record and sort of picturing in their mind what the show would have been like on Broadway if they had had a chance to see it.”

Hickman, whose resumé includes numerous Yukon credits as both choreographer and director, considers it a “wonderful opportunity” to present a large-cast musical in a small black-box theatre, with no capacity to fly elaborate set pieces in and out.

“I love that restraint, because it just forces us to be a bit more creative,” she said of the challenges she had to address with set designer Brian Fidler.

“How can we change the Man in Chair’s apartment to a 1920s lavish, wealthy manor and then go back to the apartment a moment later? We’ve been having a lot of fun digging into those elements.”

The Guild production also offers interesting challenges and opportunities to the actor-singers who carry the action.

“Every character gets a song and every character gets featured, so it’s great for community theatres, it’s great for schools, because it’s not just two leads and the rest are backup. Everybody gets their shots,” Hickman said.

An additional challenge in what is often called “a musical within a comedy” is the fact that the actors are expected to play their roles as they would have been performed by specific vaudeville and musical comedy performers of the era.

“As actors, we always try to have deep, honest performances.

This show can have that, but it also has to be a nod to the time

period and the style of acting that was happening in the ’20s, which is over-the-top and fun and silly.”

On top of that challenge, the principal performers in the 14-member Guild version will also be tackling minor roles as reporters, maids and even monkeys, all which would normally be done by cont’d on page 11...

Performers in The Drowsy Chaperone are expected to play their roles as they would have been performed by vaudeville and musical comedy performers separate ensemble players.

“It’s a lot of tracking the actors, and organization to make sure their costume changes will work and that everyone has time to switch between. That’s been a lot of the prep work, logistically, for this production,” Hickman admitted.

As well as being an homage to the 1920s heyday of the Great White Way, when vaudeville was beginning the transition to book musicals, it is also a parody of that genre, with definite comic challenges.

“Almost every single line in the show is hilarious, so it’s trying to figure out how to guide the actors

through that process without having them trying to be funny. It’s just finding honest performances and hopefully that comedy comes through.”

Hickman’s husband, Brooke Maxwell, is the show’s musical director.

As a professional musician and music teacher who is relatively new to musical comedy, he also values honesty and “humanity” above even technical excellence in the performances.

“When someone has a beautiful instrument of their voice, that’s not the guarantee to my heart. The humanity that they’re able to portray

is,” Maxwell said. “We’re dealing with real people in community theatre who are absolutely loving it.

That’s what they start with. They bring that. They are working their butts off and singing with this level of passion.”

For the Guild production, the role of Man in Chair has been translated to Woman in Chair, featuring Sophia Marnik. Telek Rogan will handle the Drowsy Chaperone role.

Others in the cast include James McCullough (Robert), Annie O’Connor (Janet), Dave Paquet (George), Breagha Fraser (Kitty), Stephen Dunbar-Edge (Underling), Brett Chandler (Mr. Feldzieg), Roy Ness (Adolpho), Odile Nelson (Mrs. Tottendale), and Fiona Azizaj (Trix).

Brenda Barnes and James Croken will play Gangsters one and two, respectively, while Lindy-Jo Astin will play the Superintendent.

The Drowsy Chaperone runs from Thursday, April 4 to Saturday, April 20 at the Guild Hall on 14th Avenue. Curtain time is 8 p.m.

From Wedding Skit to BroadAway Hit

T

he story behind the multiple award-winning “musical within a comedy” known as The Drowsy Chaperone could easily inspire a musical comedy of its own.

It began in 1977, when a group of Canadian theatre artists, including Don McKellar, Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, cobbled together an evening of party fare before the wedding of their friends, actor-comedians Bob Martin and Janet van der Graaf.

As a spoof of stage musicals of the 1920s through the 1940s, with witty banter added, it may have resembled an evening around the piano with the likes of Jerome Kern or Cole Porter.

From this modest beginning, it morphed into a popular entry in the Toronto Fringe Festival that happened to catch the eye of impresario David Mirvish, who bankrolled an expanded version that played at Theatre Passe Muraille in 1999.

By this time, Martin himself was part of the team, co-writing the book with McKellar, while Lambert and Morrison provided both music and lyrics.

It was Martin who introduced the pivotal Man in Chair character whose imagination summons up a full-blown staging of a fictional 1928 Broadway musical, and provides running commentary for the audience, almost like a Greek chorus.

Following much revision, expansion and development, as well as an out-of-town run in Los Angeles, The Drowsy Chaperone made its Broadway debut on May 1, 2006.

It quickly garnered five Tony Awards and numerous other honours before going on to become one of most successful Canadian entries in the modern musical theatre canon (perhaps second only to Come From Away).

Amply loaded with 1920s-era Broadway allusions and inside gags (Robert Martin is an oil tycoon on the brink of marrying Feldzieg Follies star Janet Van De Graaff), it has become a world-wide theatre staple.

In brief, a pair of gangsters pressure Feldzieg to prevent Janet’s wedding, to protect their boss’s investment in the Follies. Feldzieg engages an incompetent lothario, Alphonso, to seduce Janet so that Robert will cancel the wedding.

Meanwhile, Janet’s alcoholic chaperone, fails in her assignment to keep the happy couple separated before the nuptials take place, and falls under the spell of Alphonso, who mistakes her for Janet.

Victoria-based Brooke Maxwell, musical director of the Guild Theatre’s production that open April 4, said the show “blew [his] mind, both in the sculpting craftsmanship of the comedy, as well as the musical integration and the sort of tribute to the era.”

It’s Maxwell’s second outing as musical director of the show.

He said he laments the fact that many current musicals don’t provide “improvisational vehicles” for jazz musicians, as earlier musicals do.

“You don’t hear the jazz guys jamming on songs from The Lion King. They just don’t have the same song structure, the same sort of wit and relation to melody and harmony,” he said.

“What I really appreciated with these songs is that they did.

These are great old songs. I think they would have been hits in the ’20s. They’re funny, they’re smart, they’re singable. I really enjoy them.”

verybody knows the Yukon has its share of folk music and roots rock, but they don’t often think about electronic music. According to Kevin Jack, they should.

Four years ago, when Jack opened to the public what had been an invite-only affair for 10 years, he did it because of the huge amount of electronic talent he saw in the Yukon.

“Just looking at the artists who were playing at that time … I was like you know we have a huge network of really cool artists that are really evolving and I’d love to be able to showcase this and to bring this to the public and to show that there’s every spectrum of music out there.”

“A big push was giving exposure and helping other artists excel and providing a unique setting in Kettley’s Canyon,” he said of the venue, tucked between Marsh Lake and the Yukon River.

That’s what Paradise has done every year since, he said. From local artists, including DJ Dash and Jeremy Parkin (both will appear this year) to international acts such as DJ Krafty Kuts, Jack said the event has proven to be one that engages a broad cross-section of Yukoners every year.

This year is no different, with a line-up featuring the Fort Knox Five from Washington, D.C., SkiiTour from Whistler, and DJ Smoothie and Breo from Vancouver. Local artists include Dustin Miles and Stosh from Mayo, Benny Lahobbit from Dawson City, and DJ Dash and Usagi Forest from Whitehorse.

In fact, breaking down the barriers and stigma around rave culture is part of the point of the festival as well, Jack said. Paradise has a harm reduction team, security guards and a great first aid team.

“Last year temperatures were above the 30s and it was another year with zero first aid requirements. That’s a huge wonderful thing.”

Jack credits volunteers with a lot of the festival’s success. That includes everyone from the board members of the Paradise Music Festival Society, who put the weekend together each year, to the people who are out and about during the event, taking responsibility for everything from garbage clean-up and vendor assistance, to looking out for attendees.

“Now we see the potential and the feedback and support has been unreal. It’s nice to be able to bring something totally different this far north.”

And it’s not only nice for the residents, but for the performers who come from across Canada and beyond. (Krafty Kuts is from the UK.) Jack said they’re always amazed by the experience. It’s the combination of the vast landscapes, pristine air, complete lack of skyscrapers and the intimacy of the crowd that comes out.

“They’re really engaged in the music,” said Jack.

“They come together in this little community that’s growing every year and everybody contributes their part to it, which is important for it.”

This year, he said audiences can expect everything from funk to reggae beats on Saturday afternoon to house, breakbeats, drum, bass and dubstep.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to see the dynamic nature of electronic music.”

Paradise takes place from Friday July 26 to Sunday July 28.

Ditch your fear of public speaking

Tips for showcasing your expertise and building your confidence and skills

hether you’re interested in being a leader or looking to grow your business, speaking in public is a surefire way to establish expertise and credibility in your field.

Unfortunately for many, the thought of public speaking is enough to cause them to shrink back and turn down opportunities that come their way.

Public speaking seems to be one of the fears that most of us share. The fear is so common that it even has a name—Glossophobia.

For some, the anxiety can be more mild; for others, it can be debilitating. However it shows up, it can make the whole experience unpleasant and can cause you to shy away from sharing your ideas, stepping up as a leader and even featuring your work. It can keep you from being on that panel at a conference, making valuable connections at a networking event or doing a Facebook Live.

Luckily, public speaking is like

any other skill in that it can be learned. And the best part is it can be learned through fun exercises that are far less intimidating than speaking in front of a crowd.

SMRT WOMEN and Toastmasters are partnering to offer a workshop on April 10 to help women and non-binary folks build their skills and confidence in public speaking.

The workshop will feature small group settings, facilitators and fun games.

We’ve pulled together some of our favourite tips to help you get more comfortable with public speaking: 1. Know your audience: Knowing WHO you are talking to is the best way to say something that is memorable and meaningful.

When you are struck with blank page syndrome and find yourself unable to plan what you are going to say, knowing your audience is a great way to help focus your thoughts and ideas. Ask yourself

who your audience is, what it is that they want or are looking for, and what problem you can help them solve.

2. Focus on just a couple of key messages: There is a tendency to ramble when we get nervous in front of a crowd. This can happen when in front of a room delivering a workshop, it can happen in a meeting room when speaking to a project, or it can happen one-onone at a networking event when talking about your business. Focusing on one to three key points or messages that you want to get across can help you stay on track.

It can help ensure that whatever you are saying is clear and easy for your audience to follow.

3. Prepare with bullet points: Following from the above tip, stay far away from writing a full script. Nothing is more painful than watching someone stumble through a pre-written talk, read-

Instead, write key points that you want to say and make bullet notes around these points. As soon as you feel you are writing longform sentences and paragraphs, step back and go back to notes.

Embrace that your talk or your elevator pitch is not going to sound the same every time. That’s ok! In fact, that is where the magic of flow happens. When you prepare around points and key messages, you can find confidence and flexibility in what you’re saying across settings and audiences. Plus, you come off as far more of an expert who really knows your stuff, which is much harder to convey when reading right off a piece of paper.

4. Join your local Toastmasters group: Joining Toastmasters can

help you develop public speaking skills and build your confidence.

Whitehorse has three Toastmaster groups, and guests are always welcome!

Come learn all about Yukon’s three bird banding stations from the experts themselves. Weather-permitting, members of the Society of Yukon Bird Observatories will demonstrate banding techniques. Ducks, grebes, and gulls cover Schwatka Lake in May. We’ll cruise the shoreline, stopping to check out the birds we see.
