he allure of even a wellcrafted, lightweight shovel begins to pale after days upon numberless days of snow upon snow upon snow.

There is wisdom in the old saw that everybody likes to complain about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. I have no quarrel with that assertion, and harbour no ill will toward those who make it. Complaining about the weather is an essential element of Canadian life. It binds us together from coast to coast to you-know-where.

Doing nothing about it is also a time-honoured Canadian tradition, as is berating the hapless slugs in the weather prediction business whenever they get something even mildly wrong.

In normal years, under normal circumstances, none of the above applies to British Columbia’s southwestern precincts, whose denizens never complain about the weather. Why would they? If anything unites Canadians more than a dislike of Toronto (or the Habs, or Justin Bieber, or what-

ever party is currently in office), it is resentment of smug left-coasters who boast about daffodils in February, or vines laden with sunripened fruit weeks before any other part of the dominion.

Yes, Virginia, our home and native land is still officially called the Dominion of Canada, although the ranks of those who use that arcane title are becoming increasingly thin. It is often possible to recognize members of this species by their habit of referring to the late Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Windsor as Edward VIII, King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, et cetera, rather than the more modest title of Duke of Windsor. Not all of them are paidup subscribers of the Monarchist League of Canada, nor do they all share the deflationary dogma of the Flat Earth Society.

Nevertheless, many of these noble souls clearly hanker for days of yore, when the Cadbury map of the world in every elementary school classroom was awash in pink to reflect the scope and

might of the British Empire, upon which the sun would surely never set.

And where else might one find the most concentrated mass of such souls than right there in the bottom-left corner of Canada’s map, in the tea-sipping nooks of the lovely Empress Hotel in Victoria, which predates even the aforementioned King/Duke?

But I digress. My thesis (if I actually have one) is that these are not normal times.

Suddenly, the rest of Canada is choosing to embrace Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland as bona fide parts of the Dominion of Snow and Ice. Welcome aboard. We promise not to mock the clumsy way you wield your first snow shovel, recently purchased from your neighbourhood tire centre. But woe betide you the next time you dare brag about those February daffodils.

arika Kitchen can’t remember a time when she wasn’t environmentally conscious. She grew up with parents who led a low-impact lifestyle and took her camping as a kid. That, she said, influenced her views as an adult and that’s what led Kitchen, 19, to the Canadian Conservation Corps. (CCC) CCC is a nine-month program, created by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and offered by the Canadian government, to youth aged 18 to 30.

The program consists of three stages—an Outward Bound-led wilderness adventure, field work and outreach.

At each stage, participants learn team building, leadership skills and more.

Kitchen said she heard about the program when she was working at Yukon Youth Conservation Corps.

“I was finishing up that job and it was a good time to kind of start something new and it was definitely something I was interested in. I’ve been interested in it my whole life.”

“Just kind of with it being a new experience and a new program, it has a lot of different things that you could get out of it and learn,” she said. “I’m at that stage in life where I want to be learning and developing different skills.”

Last fall, Kitchen jumped

into a month of training, including leadership and first aid. After that, she spent roughly two weeks with a group of 10 other program participants, kayaking around Vancouver Island.

As a team, they worked on navigational and safety skills while paddling Hornby Island, Tofino and Comox.

“I think there are a lot of things that are important that I learned.

One is gaining a lot of confidence in how I present myself and do things. Just because you’re put in situations you’re not used to and you’re forced out of your comfort zone, you kind of learn a lot about yourself because of that.”

Following that, Kitchen spent three months in Ottawa, where she worked with the Canadian Wildlife Federation, researching the American eel in Ontario waterways.

“Eels get chopped up in the turbines along the dams on rivers.

It’s one of the reasons they’re endangered,” she said.

“My research was to go and catch eels and try to figure out tracking migration patterns to see if the eels were using a bypass in the waterways.”

Right now, Kitchen is on a break, visiting her sister in Thailand. Before she left however, she had started her stage three with CCC, including completing volunteer hours with different conservation organizations in the Yukon,

such as CPAWS, Yukon Energy and Zero Waste Yukon.

When she returns, she’ll continue with that and with outreach work, she said.

She wants to bring awareness to issues of conservation.

It may be second nature to someone like Kitchen, whose mother has long been involved with the Caribou Recovery Project, but there are people for whom conservation isn’t part of an everyday conversation. Just making them aware and showing them how they might get involved is really important to her.

“It’s just being mindful of what you use and taking small steps toward helping a big overall change.”

To that end, when she comes back to the Yukon this spring, she’ll be presenting in local schools. She wants to organize a youth forum to get youth together and have elders come in and discuss the environment.

Snowmobile ice travel Larry has some tips to stay safe when venturing out onto ice on your snowmobile

rom pleasure rides to bison hunts, snowmobiles have revolutionized backcountry travel in the winter. Sadly, too many people are not at all prepared for the possibility of the many life-threatening situations that can arise. Already this season, a few Canadians have drowned after going through ice that was flawed, or just not thick enough.

At least one machine has gone through lake ice here in the Yukon.

The rider was OK but a costly helicopter retrieval was needed to get the machine.

Overflow (water on top of the ice and and, until disturbed, usually invisible under the snow) is very common and will bog down a slow-moving or heavily loaded machine. Often another machine cannot get close enough to tow the stuck machine. When you step off your stalled machine, the water/ slush mixture is sometimes up to your thighs. You are wet right away and if you can get the machine out at all, it may take many hours.

There are some things you can do to avoid this.

Machines travelling in a line should stay some distance back from the machine ahead. If you are too close together, all of you may end up bogged down. Ideally, the distance between you and the

machine ahead should allow you to see the water coming up in the track of the machine in front.

You can also watch for overflow.

The first sign is often a sense that your machine is labouring and losing speed. A quick look behind may well show you the gray colour of water coming up into your track.

Don’t spend time doing anything except trying to get out of that area. Open the throttle wide and try to make a gradual turn back to where the track is not waterfilled. Running parallel to, and not too far away from, the shore will provide you with a shorter distance to get to safety.

I suggest avoiding a run down the middle of a lake, as any overflow may cover a huge area and you won’t know if and where it ends. There is often overflow where creeks flow into rivers or lakes. You can often see that and either go out around it, or go onto the shore.

Thin, unsafe ice is a condition that often exists on Yukon rivers and lakes even when temperatures have been extremely cold. All Yukon rivers have moderate currents. The movement of the water affects the formation of surface ice. The ice can be thick enough for miles and then suddenly become very thin, or even non-exist-

ent, without any warning signs.

Many Yukon lakes have locations where the ice is thin and unsafe annually. An example from the 70s was Kusawa Lake near Arc Mt. An airplane on skis put a ski through the ice and was stuck. Three trucks drove down the lake to assist. All three of the trucks went through the ice near the plane.

Not many years ago on Long Lake, in the Aishihik area, a very experienced snowmobiler lost his machine and a skimmer load of gear when the ice gave way in a spot that had traditionally been safe. That’s a long way from anywhere to have all your gear and transportation suddenly disappear.

There is always an element of luck in much of what we do, but paying attention and being prepared will get you more luck.

Yukonʻs Best Friend: DOG CULTURE Submitted by Kristen Stewart Almost 3-year-old Winston is not your typical Yukon pup. Though born in Ontario, he has been living up north since he was only four months old.

We recently visited Whitehorse for five days and Winston’s winter attire certainly turned some heads. He had to be bundled up in two coat layers with the cold snap this week, a snood to protect his ears, and boots to keep his paws from being frostbitten. There was a lot of smiling and pointing from passing vehicles and pedestrians.

Winston’s “Northern Lights” collar is a celebration of this amazing territory.

A mild, snowy day in Watson Lake. When the temperature gets really low at home in Watson Lake, he walks on a treadmill inside to stay active.

Whitehorse prog-rock trio Antarticus will be playing a show on March 23 to celebrate the release of their first album Antarticus’ album, with artwork by Chris Caldwell of Heavy Metal North, is set for a vinyl release

ake a listen to Antarticus’ album—you almost won’t believe it was released this year. The prog-rock record is packed with extended solos, synthesizers and sci-fi/fantasy themes. As if that’s not oldschool enough, it’s also being released on vinyl.

“I think it makes sense for our style and mentality,” said bassist, keyboardist and vocalist Mack Smith. “It’s more of a personal, nostalgic choice, but we feel that fans of our music will appreciate having it on vinyl.”

On March 23, Antarticus will be putting on a special show at the Elks Lodge, where fans can get their hands on the physical

album for the first time. Though the album is already up on online streaming platforms and will see a CD release as well, the desire to have vinyl records manufactured was shared by the whole group.

“We just wanted to have a real deal 180g vinyl physical copy you can hold in your hands that’s just as good as what any other band or label would release,” said guitarist and vocalist Addam Parsons. “Plus (Heavy Metal North artist) Chris Caldwell did such a great job on the album art, it deserves to be shown off as an LP!” Rounded out by drummer Dustin Parsons (Addam’s twin),

Antarticus has been gigging on Whitehorse’s local circuit since 2017. All three members had been playing in various bands for over a decade beforehand.

“We played a lot of shows together and always talked about music gear and our love of Rush,” said Smith.

“We all kind of lost interest as Flora Colossus started to fade away so I brought forward some different songs that I had been working on in my spare time and we formed Antarticus.”

While Antarticus has an impressive list of live performances under its belt already, including a main stage spot at the 2017 At-

lin Arts & Music Festival, with a record now out, the band is garnering more attention.

“We’ve been getting more interest than I initially expected,” said Parsons. “Folks all over the world have been reaching out and telling us they really enjoyed the record or have been playing it on their podcasts and radio stations. So hopefully it can keep building momentum one fan at a time.”

With a strong musical chemistry, Smith and the Parsons twins were able to collaboratively create songs that showed their influences, but still took off in their own directions. While the album’s musical elements were inspired by a variety of decadesold bands including Rush and Black Sabbath, the lyrics revolve around themes and imagery from books and movies, such as Bladerunner, Heavy Metal and Dune.

“We get along musically quite well,” said Parsons. “It’s a blessing that we can work off each other and develop ideas without much arguing or struggling.”

Antarticus’ album was recorded at Green Needle Records with sound engineer Jim Holland. It was co-produced and mixed by Holland and Smith, and mastered

by Craig Waddell. The band released it themselves on their own label, Stoneburner Records. So far, the music has been featured on podcasts in Poland, Germany and the U.K. It has received positive critical reception. Vinyl copies can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp now.

The album’s vinyl release party will take place on Saturday, March 23 at the Elks Lodge.

The doors open at 7 p.m. The all-ages show is also a licensed event, so ID is required to get a liquor wristband for the cashonly bar.

Spreading the JAM for 20 years

Junction Arts and Music is hosting a series of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary this year

Jazz Yukon and Whitehorse Concerts have partnered with JAM since 2002, but, over the years, they have also partnered with most of the arts organizations across the territory, including the Yukon Arts Centre, Gwaandak Theatre, Nakai Theatre, Frostbite Festival, Atlin Arts & Music Festival, Live Words Writers’ Festival, Available Light Film Festival, the Storytelling Festival, the Yukon Film Society, Yukon Women in Music and some Southeast Alaska Arts organizations.

They will continue to celebrate this success over the coming months. The first weekend in March featured a painting workshop with Maya Rosenberg for youth and artists.

Their big weekend celebration will take place on the May 4 weekend. The main event will feature a dinner and Yukon band, Major Funk and the Employment. They are still adding more events to the weekend, but it promises to be a great time in the Junction.

unction Arts and Music (JAM) has a big year planned. After 20 years, close to 400 events and more than 17,000 attendees, they have a lot to celebrate.

They kicked off their anniversary year in January, with Sarah MacDougall performing in Haines Junction as part of her CD release party. According to Holly Dalrymple, the organization’s executive director, it was “more than we could have hoped for.”

“It was early January and really flipping cold,” she said. “It was really catering to the residents of Haines Junction.

“We had over 80 people. The band loved it, which was great. With Sarah (MacDougall), it was a good segue. It was the kickoff of her tour as well.”

In February, JAM partnered with Jazz on the Wing to bring Vancouver’s Jodi Proznick to Haines Junction in advance of her performance at the Yukon Arts Centre. Their February schedule also included their La Belle en Hiver event, co-hosted with the Association francoyukonnaise, featuring a wine and cheese tasting.

In an email, Darlene Sillery, a longtime JAM organizer, explained the evolution of the organization. It began in the community as the Society for Education and Culture in May of 1999 (its name was changed to JAM in 2007). Its first event was the Symposium on Wisdom and Wilderness.

The second event featured a concert by Anne Louise Genest, accompanied by a second symposium.

From there, the organization made sure that all later events featured an artistic component, ranging from music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, photography, writing, including national and international visual arts, as well as dozens of Yukon

musicians. In addition, they’ve included workshops and school shows as part of the programming when artists have been willing.

From My Mother’s Kitchen with Murray Martin

Desserts to steal for GOOD OLD-FASHIONED DESSERT

Like most ladies of the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, Grandmother Sweeney and my mother grew up making home desserts you’d steal for. (If they turned their backs for a minute, I did exactly that.) Here are some favorites I suggest you try, keep this page in a binder and pass it on to your children.

1940S LEMON PIE Ingredients: 2 cups flour 1 Tbsp butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup milk 2 eggs juice of one lemon juice of half an orange.

With this recipe, I suggest you use real juice the way they did in the old days.

Separate eggs and beat yolks.

Stir in flour, butter, sugar and juices. Add milk and beat well.

Fold in beaten egg whites. Place in unbaked pie shell and bake at 350 F for 1 hour, until golden brown.

REAL PUMPKIN PIE Ingredients 9-inch baking pie shell 1 cup real pumpkin 1/2 cup cold milk 1/4 cup white sugar 1 package vanilla Whip n’ Chill 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1/4 cup cold water.

Combine dessert mix, sugar and spice. Blend in pumpkin, milk and water. Whip for 3 minutes. Put in pie shell. Chill at least 3 hours.

Murray shares some of Grandma Sweeney’s desserts he’d steal while they weren’t looking, including old-style banana muffins TASTY CHERRY CHEESE SQUARES OF THE 40S Ingredients 1 and 1/4 cup graham wafer crumbs 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 cup icing sugar 1 tin cherry pie filling 1/4 cup melted butter 1 package Dream Whip 8 oz Philadelphia cream cheese Combine wafer crumbs with melted butter and brown sugar.

Press into pan and bake for 8 minutes at 350 F. Allow to cool.

Make Dream Whip as directed on package. Add icing sugar

This week’s saying; “Communication in the home is not improved by loud speakers.” and cream cheese, making sure cheese is softened. Pour mixture into crumbs. Spread 1 tin cherry filling on top and refrigerate. If desired, you can use blueberries rather than cherries. Both are excellent.

ORIGINAL BANANA MUFFINS Ingredients 3 mashed bananas 1 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup walnuts 1/4 cup melted shortening 1 egg 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup salt 3/4 cup sugar Combine bananas, egg and sugar and mix well. Add the dry ingredients. Add the shortening last. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.

A WINTER’S SNOW PUDDING Ingredients 1 Tbsp gelatine 1/4 cup cold water 1 cup boiling water 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 egg whites Soak gelatine in cold water.

Dissolve in boiling water. Add sugar and lemon juice. Drain and set aside to cool. When thick, beat in stiffly-beaten egg whites.

Mould. Serve cold with custard made from egg yolks.

WALNUT BANANA CAKE Ingredients 1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 well-beaten eggs 1 tsp soda dissolved in tsp boiling water 1 cup mashed bananas 2 cups sifted flour 2 tsp baking powder Pinch salt 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 tsp vanilla Cream butter and sugar. Add beaten eggs and beat well. Dissolve soda in boiling water and add to mashed bananas. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together and add to mashed bananas. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together and add alternately with mashed bananas to first mixture.

Add walnuts and vanilla. Bake in oven at 350 F for 40 minutes.

APPLE CRISP OF THE AGES Ingredients Beat 2 eggs well, and gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Sift together.

2/3 cup flour 1/4 cup salt 2 and 1/2 tsp baking powder Add to mixtures. Mix well and fold in the following 1 cup chopped peeled apple 1 cup chopped walnuts 2 tsp vanilla

Pour into greased dish measuring 12 inches X 8 inches X 1 and 1/2 inches. Sprinkle top with 1/2 cup shredded coconut. Bake 30 minutes at 350 F. Serve with whipped cream. Serves 8.

HEAVENLY APPLE PANDOWDY Ingredients 3 cups sliced apples 1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp cinnamon Put apples into buttered 1 quart baking dish. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and spices. Bake in moderate oven for 30 minutes, or until apples are soft.

1/4 cup shortening 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 3/4 sifted flour 3/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1/3 cup milk.

Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually and beat until fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk. Beat until smooth. Spread over cooked apples. Bake 30 minutes more.

Serve warm with foamy sauce, hard sauce or whipped cream.

Enjoyment is the whole point

The Katie Thiroux Trio performs March 24 at Jazz on the Wing on the Yukon Arts Centre mainstage

A

legendary bass player who died almost two decades ago indirectly influenced Katie Thiroux’s decision to inject a healthy dose of standard jazz content into her concerts and recordings.

“I learned a lesson, by way of Ray Brown, that it’s a good idea to play songs that people know, so they feel like they’re a part of what’s going on. Also, they’re just amazing songs.”

The Los Angeles native said sharing a new take on a familiar melody, or set of lyrics, can be fun for both performers and audience members.

“It’s something we can all connect with,” Thiroux said. “Ultimately, I really make music for people to enjoy it. That’s the whole point to it.”

The bassist/singer/bandleader compares the best tunes of the Great American Songbook to the classical works she first encountered when she started studying violin at the age of four.

“Sometimes I’ll listen to a George Gershwin song, or Harold Arlen, and think to myself, ‘Wow. There’s nothing you get to do that’s better than that.’”

“What’s better than [Beethoven’s] Fifth Symphony, or the Ninth Symphony? It’s so timeless in that way.”

In accordance with her family’s rule, Thiroux spent four years of her early childhood pursuing the Suzuki method, which uses violin as the foundational instrument of musical instruction.

“Honestly, I was really bad at violin. Especially when there’s other little kids around you that are sawing away at it and playing concertos already by age six,” she admitted.

“Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but as soon as I got my hands on the bass, that was finally it for me.”

That transition was made easier by the fact that both her mother and her older brother played bass.

Plus, her mother imparted some pragmatic advice from her own experience.

“She just suggested—and I’ll never forget this, because it was so vivid—‘Why don’t you try the bass, because someone always needs a bass player, and you always make money.’”

At the age of eight, thanks to a “wonderful, mentoring teacher,” Thiroux found her musical future.

“As soon as I held the instrument it was just like when a little kid holds a baseball bat for the first time and says, ‘This is it.’ That’s what it felt like for me.”

As well as the bass, the young Thiroux was learning to master another instrument—her own voice.

“I was really lucky to grow up in Los Angeles, where there happened to be a lot of music going on all the time. I was able to study with wonderful teachers and get to be in really great children’s choirs.”

When she was 10 years old, one of the choirs Thiroux belonged to functioned as a sort of “farm team” for the Los Angeles Opera.

“So I was in this choir and got

of a voice some writers have described as clear, but not particularly big.

“I agree. It’s more conversational, I guess. Almost like a horn.

That’s how I feel about it. But I love lyrics. I love, love, love telling a story.

I feel badly about this, but if I don’t like a song, it’s usually to do with the lyrics,” she said.

Throughout high school, her orientation as a bass player was definitely toward classical music. She even intended to pursue that trajectory in university, except for a “thought knocking on the door” questioning that choice.

Enter jazz. More specifically, enter one particular tune in her parent’s eclectic record collection.

It wasn’t by Ray Brown, or any of the double-bass jazz giants with such names as Clarke, Carter, Mingus, or Haden. It was by vibraphonist and swing band leader, Lionel Hampton.

And it was anything but highbrow jazz.

“It was really one cut I heard

of his called ‘Rag Mop.’ It was so silly, but fun and swinging, and there’s a lot of people in the band,” Thiroux said.

“I couldn’t tell if they were making the song up on the spot, or what was going on, but it was just so fun. I was like, ‘Wow, I should start listening to this music more often.’”

The rest, as the cliché goes, is history—a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music; gigs in Monterey, California, and practically everywhere else with a jazz festival; extensive touring and teaching; two CDs and a third in the wings.

This month, Thiroux will travel the farthest north she’s ever been, to present a Jazz on the Wing concert for Jazz Yukon. With her will be longtime friends and collaborators, Glenn Zaleski and Matt Witek, on piano and drums, respectively.

Next summer, she and Witek will inaugurate a week-long jazz camp on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

At just 31, Thiroux has a clear understanding of why she does what she does.

“The reason I play music is to help people, to help humanity. As long as that remains a goal and an endpoint, I will continue to play music.”

Thaw di Gras is coming soon

t’s perhaps still a bit wintery

by March 15, but that is the annual date when Dawson City celebrates what is nearly the end of that season with its Thaw di Gras “Spring” carnival. The event runs over a weekend, from March 15 to 17.

If climate change doesn’t make too many changes there will be more than enough snow for snow sculptures and at least one of the days will be sunny. Some people will even find that their winter gear is a bit too warm for physical activities like tossing logs, chainsaws, and axes, snowshoe base-

ball, road hockey, dog sled races and mini-golf in the snow.

Not everything will take place outside. Most of the establishments in town will have some kind of indoor activity such as arm wrestling, hat toss, bum darts (don’t ask), pancake breakfast, turkey shoot and live music in several venues around the town.

There are also dog and cat shows where folks can show off their pets.

Diamond Tooth Gerties will be open for the weekend and the Snowshoe Shufflers will be on hand. For the first time in years,

Saturday night will see a scaleddown show featuring Gertie and some of her girls, as well as a fiddle band from Whitehorse.

Back outside there will be a crok-a-curl (that’s Crokinole with curling rocks), an air rifle shoot held by the Legion and the Rangers, the Great KVA Egg Toss, Yukon Order of Pioneers tea boiling, a one-dog pull contest (just like in Call of the Wild) and fireworks over the river.

Sunday afternoon is the always the busiest time, with the parking lot at Gerties filled by a large crowd taking part in activities for

young and old. The junior and senior egg toss is one of the favorites, especially for the ravens.

Maybe its only equal, in terms of excitement, is the loonie and toonie in a haystack events, which has separate heats for different age groups.

Youngsters will also enjoy the go-skate event at the arena.

Gerties will be the venue for lip sync events for kids in the afternoon and for adults in the evening.

The KVA’s Andy Cunningham notes that Air North is putting on extra flights for the weekend, as

they have before. More and more people seem to want to come to Dawson’s late winter blow-out, where most of the events are within walking distance of each other and most of them are free.

After three decades in classrooms in Beaver Creek, Faro and Dawson, Dan Davidson retired to continue writing, as he had been all those years.
