The second annual Yukon Comedy Festival will run March 14 to 17, including a separate Haines Junction event Ken Bolton
R
icard Eden makes no apology for putting the focus of the Yukon Comedy Festival on the performers as much as on the audience. “We obviously want to bring up talent that residents are going to want to see and we want to make our ticket price affordable, but our festival is really focused on the performers,” Eden said. “If we treat them really, really well, that means everyone is going to get a better show and that means we’re going to get more exciting performers who are willing to give us a break to come up here.” When Eden arrived in the Yukon three years ago, he had several years of performance experience under his belt, but had only “dabbled a little bit” in standup comedy. “Comedy’s a thing I had a lot of passion for for a long time. It’s a thing I’ve always really enjoyed, but my first sort of arts love was in music,” he said. “I was a touring musician for a long time and a thing that occurred to me was that I’m better at giving other people the spotlight than taking it myself.” As a professional marketer, Eden has cultivated various friendships in Canadian comedy circles, as well as in comedy networks in places such as New York and Los Angeles. Still, it was the breadth of local comedic talent that drew his attention when he was thinking of various options for initiating a festival of some kind in his new locale. “Comedy was always a throughline for me, so I started introducing myself to the local community of comedians and seeing them perform. “As somebody who’s lived all throughout Ontario and has trav-
This year’s event will run from Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17 at three Whitehorse venues, with a Sunday show at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction. “I’m excited to see how that community will respond to this kind of comedy. I like doing these little experiments and seeing how it works out. This may mean we can do it more in other years,” he said. “I think it’s important that we should be constantly experimenting and trying new things with this festival, so it doesn’t become stale in any way.” At the same time as the Haines Junction performance, Filipino-Canadian comic Ron Josol will be doing a separate show at the Old Fire Hall, in conjunction with the Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon (CFAY). “We’re trying to be a diverse festival and we’re for everybody, so here’s a dedicated show for this community,” Eden said. “We’ll see if that works and if it’s great, maybe we can do more stuff like that in the future. Maybe we can partner with more associations and different types of community and keep ourselves diverse.” Both the Sunday shows are ticketed separately from the Thursday to Saturday main events. At noon on Saturday, there will be a free podcast event with Jon Gabrus, host of the L.A.-based High and Mighty podcast. Eden believes both the remoteness and a small population work to the festival’s advantage. “It’s not every day that there’s something to do like there would

Tokyo-born comedian Aiko Tanaka is one of the visiting performers featured in this year’s Yukon Comedy Festival, in both Whitehorse and Haines Junction elled much of Canada, I had never seen the strength of talent that already existed up here, with such a small population,” Eden said. “I knew it was something that deserved more spotlight, so that’s kind of what gave birth to the festival.” A few years ago, he and local comedian George Maratos cofounded a not-for-profit group called the Yukon Comedy Collective, which led to the inaugural Yukon Comedy Festival in March of 2018. “We didn’t call it a Whitehorse Comedy Festival for a reason. We wanted this to span the entirety of the Yukon. We’re a new festival, so we can’t go too big, but last year we brought some of our L.A. comics out to Dawson City and that was a really fun experience.”

be in a city the size of Toronto. So we’re able to take a little more risk, knowing that people are interested in risks,” he said. “They’re interested in seeing performers that maybe they don’t have any information about, but they’re willing to take a chance and come to see them.” As the festival’s artistic director, Eden’s goal is to book up-andcoming performers from places such as L.A., just before they become household names. “I try to get the performers right before they break, performers who are going to be getting deals. And we definitely had that last year with Dave Merheje, who now has a Netflix special. Same thing with Dino Archie. “So I try to make sure we’re right on the cusp, so that we get these really exciting performers that people go, ‘wow, they performed here before they really broke big.’”
As well as providing stage time for local comics, as hosts or opening acts in each of the festival shows, the organizers also make a point of providing opportunities for them to rub shoulders socially with the outside professionals. This effort has already borne fruit for Whitehorse comic Jenny Hamilton, who recently recorded a CD for Rad Land Records, a new comedy label created by L.A. comic Kyle Clark, who sought her out after seeing her perform in last year’s Yukon festival. Comin’ on down to The Funk is Tight Major Funk and the Employment take on a game show classic Gabriela Sgaga
D
awsonites had a chance to “Get up with the get down and come on down” at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall on Feb. 23. Whitehorse band Major Funk and the Employment were in town, bringing with them not only a high-energy funkstyle dance party, but an added bonus round of fun. The band took to the stage and encouraged audience members to “come on down” in the style of the classic game show The Price is Right. Renamed The Funk is Tight, contestants played games and bid on items donated by Yukon businesses, while the band played favourite theme songs throughout the show. It all came to a head with the Showcase Showdown; contestants spun a scaled-down version of the Big Wheel for a chance to win the mystery grand prize. While the band has a fairly large roster of musicians (“that’s where the Employment part of the band name comes in,” said founder Etienne Girard), those who played that played the show that night included Girard, Selina Heyligers-Hare (keys and vocals), Adrian Burrill (trumpet and vocals), Lee Campese (drums), Brent Gallant (guitar), Fiona Solon (vocals) and Fred Osson (saxophone and vocals). The band has two successful live recordings (2016’s Hot Off The Floor and 2017’s Live at Jazz in the Hall) under its belt. This past summer saw Major Funk record their first studio album, Thoughts EP. They’re working on recording a couple new singles thanks to the Yukon Media Development Sound Recording Fund, and hope to work on a new album next winter. The band has also been touring, mostly in Western Canada. It was on one of these tours that the idea for a game show theme came up. “We love themes,” said Girard. “And we wanted to do some-

Major Funk and the Employment did a two-show stand of their The Funk is Tight show in Dawson City and Whitehorse thing different and the most fun possible thing in the universe,” said Adrian Burrill. After much brainstorming, the band settled on doing something around the classic game show The Price is Right, because, as Burrill puts it, “the theme song is so damn good, you just gravitate towards it as a musician.” At first, the idea was to put elements of the game show into the main show, but the idea snowballed into such a big event, they decided to divide up it up into two parts; a game show for the first half, and a funk dance party for the second. Dawson local Fred Osson was chosen for the role of game show host Bob Barker (or Drew Carey, for the younger readers), while Fiona Solon and Jessica Garstin were picked as presenters. “And I decided to be the announcer over the cheesy music we’ve learned,” said Burrill with a chuckle. After the band settled on the name The Funk is Tight (Burrill takes credit for coming up with that one), the work began. “It took lots of prep work to put this all together,” said Girard. Among other things, he said, “we had to come up with a scaleddown version of the (Big Wheel.)” “We had a line on a proper size but we would have needed a truck for that,” added Burrill.
As for the prizes, Girard said once the word got out about what they were doing, “the businesses were so on board, it was a breeze.” The band watched a number of episodes of The Price is Right over several days to figure out the vibe. To top it all off, Burrill said, they even had boots on the ground in L.A.—someone, he said, who checked out the actual show and may or may not have brought back some surprises. Once the game show portion of the evening was over, the band launched into a Major Funk dance party. “I’ve played all types of music,” said Girard. “But funk is the golden ratio. It’s positive for the audience, intergenerational, super challenging as musicians. We enjoy it personally and everyone else enjoys it too.” They did it all again at the Elk’s Lodge in Whitehorse on Saturday, March 2.

ukon Women’s Transition Home Society is celebrating 40 years in good standing as a society in the Yukon. We were incorporated in 1979 and opened our doors in 1980. The Women’s Transition Home is located in Whitehorse, Yukon, on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwach’an Council. We provide safety and support to women and children who are responding to, and resisting, violence. Women’s Transition Home is an organization that preserves dignity. Our guiding principles include the following. • We understand that victims always respond and resist. • We view violence as deliberate. It is a choice. • We are committed to providing a positive social response to every woman, child and colleague. This International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate the two trailblazers for whom we have named our buildings. Kaushee Harris and Betty Sjodin demonstrated mastery in empathy, compassion, courage, resilience, humility and strength. These remarkable women gave us the gift of leadership. They showed us how, in a non-judgemental and dignified way, to meet women experiencing violence, and how to do so in a way that always recognizes

the individual stories and autonomy of each of those women. We cherish their remarkable contributions to our history and we proudly root ourselves in their legacies as we grow into the future.
Kaushee’s Story
Kaushee’s Place is named after the late Kaushee Harris, a Tlingit First Nation woman from Atlin, B.C. She was a gentle, loving and fierce advocate for women. A mother of seven, a teacher and leader, Kaushee started the safe home for women that is now Women’s Transition Home. Kaushee never forgot others who were confronted with challenges and barriers. Until her death, she worked diligently for the betterment of Yukon society.
Betty’s Story
Betty Sjodin was born in Ross River and raised traditionally. After having been a resident of the Women’s Transition Home, she chose to dedicate her life to supporting women and children fleeing abuse by becoming a Transition Home Worker. Betty provided the community with a remarkable example of leadership, compassion and strength. Her empathetic and kind nature, as well as her courage
to share her own life experience, often gave other women the strength to recognize their own resistance and resilience.

One woman’s tale travelling solo in Iran Learning to embrace your freedom as we respect International Women’s Day
Kylie Campbell
I
n 2016 I was living in the Republic of Georgia and travelled to the Islamic Republic of Iran for two months solo. Where and why you may ask? Two years prior I was travelling through Eastern Europe, and while in Ukraine, I met travellers heading to Iran. My ears perked up and I thought to myself, you can go to Iran? This was the seed that planted two years before and after reading and researching, I finally got to go to the incredible and misunderstood country. There are many aspects that are misrepresented in the media and misunderstood through general lack of knowledge, not just of Iran but the whole region. I mean, how are we supposed to know all the history of ALL the world. But as International Women’s Day approaches on March 8, it reminded me particularly of this trip in Iran and I wanted to share with you my experiences and stories to remind all women to embrace the freedoms that were fought for them.
Wearing the Hijab
The hijab is the Persian word for a head dress that covers the hair and is mandatory in Iran. However, this wasn’t always the case, as previously Iranian women, like many in the region, were permitted to dress in anyway they liked. They had their hair out, they wore dresses that showed their ankles, they were permitted freely to attend school and walk down the streets with boys and men who
PHOTOS: Kylie Campbell they weren’t related to. That sounds a lot like the same rights I was raised with in my home country Australia and the same rights that women have here in Canada. However, that changed in 1979 with the Iranian Revolution when new rules and practices were instituted, particularly for women. But rules are slowly softening and changing back to previous eras. When I first put on my hijab I was terrified of a single strand of hair showing, little did I know or understand modern Iran. Flying into Tehran, the capital city of Iran, I noticed girls barely had their hair covered, sleeves were rolled up and they wore multi coloured hijabs. Was this closed-off, oppressed Iran? I spent two days in Tehran but went straight down south to the Persian gulf, discovering the more remote and less tourist-travelled parts of Iran. On the persian islands, I camped in a tent and when I awoke, I realised I wasn’t simply able to just go outside without covering my hair. It also probably wasn’t legal that I use nature as my outhouse. It was the first realisation that I had to
be aware of my surroundings and that I had to change who I was and what I wore to comply with where I was. I arrived to Kish Island, Iran’s version of Dubai, an unfamiliar setting of paved roads and manicured gardens to the remote desert and poorer islands I had just travelled. I couchsurfed with a married couple, he was a big couchsurfing host for the island. I was there with a Polish girl and then there were two European men travelling, all sleeping on the floor in the living room. The wife of the couchsurfing host would wear her hijab at home, I thought this was normal. Until one day, it was just us three girls, she had her hijab off. Her husband came home and the hijab stayed off. When the European males returned home, she put her hijab on. Inside her home she was forced to wear her hijab as custom when not with male family members.

When you take the public
March 8 is International Women’s Day International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th, and I am proud to mark this occasion with you as Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911, to recognize the economic, political and social achievements of women and acknowledge the challenges they continue to face in the quest for gender equality. This year’s national theme is #innovationforchange, and the international theme is #balanceforbetter. Both of these themes recognize the important contributions women have made in traditionally male dominated fields, while also calling to find better balance in our workplaces, leadership and lives. This important national celebration came just before another important milestone in the history of women in the Yukon. In 1919, one hundred years ago, women in Yukon obtained the right to vote and seek elected office through an amendment to the Yukon Territory Act. This right was not extended to all women at the time, due largely to prevailing racism and colonial attitudes. However, this change did begin a process of making our electorate more equitable.
Here in Yukon, we celebrate a long history of women leaders and innovators making history in science, technology, engineering, math and politics. Among them are Kate Carmack, who was recently inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame; Betty Irwin, founder of Yukon Women in Trades and Technology; and Margaret Commodore the first Indigenous woman in Yukon to become a cabinet minister. On International Women’s Day, I encourage all Yukoners to break down workplace and educational stereotypes together and support women and girls to embrace whatever field they choose. There are a variety of local events to inspire and support, including an event with female entrepreneurs at Baked Café, hosted by SMRT Women and Crowe MacKay and an open house at the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre. See the Women’s Directorate Facebook page for more details.

One woman’s tale travelling solo in Iran ... cont’d women only. Segregated by glass and bars from the opposite sex. One day I was taking a bus, normally when I travel I sit at the front and ask the driver to help me figure where I need to get off. The bus driver spoke little English, but I had directions written in Farsi to my couchsurfing host. He was polite and invited me to sit at the front seat. Next thing he asked a young boy to go and get me a drink as a gift. It was a hot day after all and I thanked him. The bus started and the next stop a middle-aged man got on the bus, noticing my presence in the front seat, he started yelling and got off the bus. I asked the driver what was wrong and he said nothing. As the bus continued I noted I definitely wasn’t supposed to be sat at the front, all the women at the back of the bus with men burning holes into the back of my head with their stares. A few stops later an older man got on the bus and started to sit next to me, I thought, Oh no, he’s
going to get in trouble being sat next to me. “Hello, where are you from?” I was shocked, his English was perfect and he was probably around 80-90 years old. We had a conversation and he used to work for British Petroleum and had travelled all over the world. He talked about what Iran was like before the revolution and what it was like now. He said to ignore the silly men being offended by me sitting in the front seat, he said that women will one day have the same rights as men again… one day. He got off the bus and off he went. Imagine you can’t travel with your brother, your father, your husband or your son, once they reach a certain age.
Will you ever be your true potential?
In the centre of the country as I was hitchhiking from Shiraz to Estabhan to visit the non-existent Lake Bakhtegan (it dried up a couple of years ago and is now a
Mandatory to wear a Chador in the Shah Cherah mosque in Shiraz, Iran
salt desert - google maps isn’t up to date), I was picked up. “Where you go? Where you go?” Hearing English was often a luxury. Drawing pictures or doing off-hand sign language like pointing to my mouth for food or drink had become normal. I said I wanted to go to the lake to go camping. His English was poor as he tried to tell me “no”. He gets on his phone, like many in Iran who don’t speak English, next I’m handed a phone. It’s his daughter. She speaks perfect English and instructs me to the status of the lake and that I MUST come stay with them. We visit the salt desert lake and thankful to be picked up and not abandoned in a waterless, shadeless desert. We get to his house and I meet his daughter who is dressed in a traditional black burka. We visit their town of Neyriz, enjoying the sites and being shown off like a cute puppy to their friends and family to gawk at. The evening arrived and it was dinner, I asked politely if I was able to take my hijab off, they said “of course, please! This is your home”. I come out, with my tattooed arms and more shock bestows their faces. I eat my food as the family stares at how I eat, as though it’s some strange custom and process. I find out the daughter speaks good English, because she is an English language teacher, yet she had never spoken to a native English speaker in her life. She asked me to come to her school, where she taught English - an all girls school, as is most common to segregate the sexes. I got to the school the next day, the girls all in black staring at me like a martian from outer space. She introduces me to the girls, they are so shy. Eventually they warm up as the teachers and I converse in English. Parents have gotten wind of a native English speaker at the school and they show up to take photos with their children and me. The girls then practice their English with me. “So do you like English?” - I ask “I love English. It is my favourite. I study very hard” - she said “What do you want to do with your English?” “I want to travel to England and go to school there”. I smile a little sad smile knowing she will probably never leave her hometown. She will marry most likely a first cousin which is common and have children and I will have been the only native English speaker she will ever speak with in her entire life. Imagine your education is not intended to be used, ever.

Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.
No more lifting, loading, lugging required Ask us about our Tire Storage Service!

On March 8th we recognize International Women’s Day, a call to action to renew our efforts. While innovation and technology can empower women and girls, a growing digital divides means that women are underrepresented in many STEM fields, both at home and abroad. Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Increasing the number of women in these fields is a powerful way to fuel change that improves the lives of people across the country.

The fastest lady in the KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH The ‘pocket paddlewheeler’ rocket by Doug Sack
“She was not only the first female river pilot on the Upper Yukon, she was also the fastest.” May 28, 1898 - Ice off Lake Bennett May 31 - Trial run to Carcross June 2 - Carcross to Tagish Post June 2-16 - Carcross towing boats on Bennett waiting for ice on Marsh Lake June 16 - Carcross to Canyon City June 17 - Third sternwheeler to run Canyon and Rapids June 21 - Early morning, first steamer to complete the Bennett-Dawson run. Later - One of first on return trip Clara honoured as first female skipper on the Upper Yukon River. 1899 - Upper Yukon Co. sold to Canadian Development Co. 1901 - Sold to White Pass, but no mention of Goddard in WP&YR records. Oct.22, 1901 - From Hootalinqua to Whitehorse pulling a large barge. Waves doused the steamer, killing power. She sunk with four crew and one passenger 1953 - Clara died 1958 - Albert died July 5, 2008 - David Davidge found wreck using GPS TECH and a depth sounder. Known as “Ghost Ship of Lake Laberge” for most of 20th century

Steamer A. J. Goddard on Lake Bennett during the Klondike Gold Rush
N
o, her name wasn’t Klondike Kate, the Oregon Mare, Bombay Peggy or the (immortalized by Robert W. Service) “Lady that’s known as Lou.” She and her husband Albert were in the fabrication and construction business in Seattle. It was July of 1897 when “ships laden with gold” arrived from a place called “The Clondyke” and all hell broke loose. Her name was Clara Goddard. Adney, London, Service, Berton and the rest of the writers and historians never heard of her because she was long gone before any of them put pens to paper. In fact, she only made one trip to Dawson, though it was a remarkable one … The Goddards were the wealthy and successful owners of a foundry and steel fabrication business called Pacific Iron Works. It prospered greatly after the Great Seattle Fire of 1888 wiped out most of their competition. You could say the Klondike Gold Rush landed in their laps like a golden goose. They were perfectly situated, geographically and financially, to take advantage of it. Motivated by the combination of easy money and a grand adventure, Albert and Clara, along with Albert’s brother, Charles, immediately began making plans to build two “pocket paddlewheelers.” The ships would be pre-fabbed
in their shipyards and shipped to both Dyea and Skagway. They would be assembled on the shores of Lake Bennett over the winter, with the goal of being ready to make steam for Dawson City as soon as the river and lakes were free of ice. Albert bought two hulls from a San Francisco foundry and had them shipped to Skagway to be pulled by horses up White Pass to Lake Bennett. Everything else, including a pre-fab boiler of his own design, took the shortcut up the Chilkoot to Lake Lindemann. All the pieces were built small enough to be packed by men. It may sound like some kind of engineering marvel, but do-it-yourself steamboat kits were quite common in the late 19th century, though not in Alaska and the Yukon. While the rest of the stampeders were whipsawing lumber, the Goddards set up a temporary shipyard on Lake Bennett. They had a company sign and a team of carpenters, millwrights and welders on hand to build two ships—the A.J. Goddard and the F.H. Kilbourne. Both were registered as Canadian vessels, Both were owned by Upper Yukon Company with Albert identified as navigator and Clara as captain or “skipper.” The Goddard was finished first and was ready to work when the ice moved off Bennett on May 28,
1898. She made a trial run to Carcross on May 31, then to Tagish Post on June 2. She was stopped by ice on Marsh Lake before returning to Carcross and spending the next two weeks towing stampeders across Bennett and Tagish lakes for profit. On June 16, Sam Steele of the Mounted Police opened Marsh for navigation and she landed at Canyon City. Clara and Albert were co-pilots of the Goddard. They had 10 paying customers for that inaugural run to Dawson. They arrived at Whitehorse on June 17, but no mention was made anywhere in their records about who piloted the ship through her first run down Miles Canyon, the dangerous whirlpool and Whitehorse Rapids. They were the third steam-powered vessel to make it through and the first to arrive in Dawson in the early morning hours of June 21. Clara was in the pilot house when they docked at Dawson. Albert was giving hand signals and supervising the crew on deck. Before they left for the return trip, Clara was honoured for being the first female paddlewheeler pilot on the Upper Yukon. The Goddard was recognized as the first ship to complete the Bennett to Dawson run during the Klondike Stampede, but it turned out to be her only round trip to Dawson. On the return voyage, the Goddard had trouble fighting the strong
current at Five Finger Rapids. She spent the rest of the ‘98 navigation season towing wooden boats across Lake Laberge and hauling passengers from Whitehorse to Hootalinqua junction, where the Teslin and 30 Mile rivers joined to form the Yukon. The Goddards returned to Seattle at the end of the ‘98 season and sold both ships to Canadian Development Co. (CDC) in ‘99. In 1901, CDC sold them to White Pass & Yukon Route. On October 22, while pulling a large barge across the marge of Lake Laberge, from Hootalinqua to Whitehorse, in the “worst storm of the season,” the Goddard went down on the north end of the lake with four crew and one passenger aboard. (three drowned, two survived.) She disappeared for the rest of the 20th century, becoming known as “The Ghost Ship of Lake Laberge” after many attempts failed to locate the wreck. Finally, on July 5, 2008, using GPS technology and a Blue Wave depth sounder, David Davidge found the intact hull at a shallow depth just off Goddard Point, right where it was suspected to be. It is now a protected aquatic historical site and the only intact “pocket paddlewheeler” known to still exist, a unique relic of the Klondike Gold Rush. Clara and Albert lived long, happy lives into the 1950s. They didn’t make a lot of money with their mini-steamboats, but they didn’t lose any either. Overall, they fulfilled their adventurous goal, getting Clara in the history books as the fastest lady in the Klondike. Native Iowans, Clara married Albert in 1886 and they took an “emmigrant train” to Washington Territory on their honeymoon, arriving exactly a year before statehood. They prospered at Fremont, on Union Lake, with a sawmill and their foundry. After their two-year Klondike adventure, they returned there for 50 more happy years. Clara said it was all good but admitted the highlight of her long life was the Stampede when she beat all the men to the Klondike.

Hello Everybody,
See It He re
We invite you to share your photos of Yukon life. Email your high-resolution images with a description of what’s going on to editor@WhatsUpYukon.com.
These photos chronicle the Windy Arm fire that took place this past summer.
Looking across Windy Arm, post-fire (first week of September) from the Skagway roadside. Strikers Valley leads away, directly across the lake. Dark burnt areas are clear along the flanks of Book Mountain (to the right). Most of the steep draws on Book are burnt right up to the treeline, but the forests along the lake were spared. Larger burn areas can be seen on Escarpment Mountain (left), in some cases, right down to the water. Smoke is still visible on the flanks of Escarpment, a little ways up Strikers So, once again, I am surprised at how much living forest is left behind after a large fire. The pothole lake, as well as Windy Arm, will live to grow another day

The dreaded ‘P’ word Every month, like clockwork, ‘flow’ comes to town and ruins everything …
No “female” beaches were open in May, so legally I could swim only if I was fully clothed – Caspian Sea, Iran
by Kylie Campbell
Y
es, that’s right, I’m going to write it. The “P” word. That’s right. Period. (Not the little dot at the end of a sentence, but the one that affects half the population for most of their lives.) It’s funny how a word can make people cringe, even the sex it impacts directly. Why can’t we talk about it? It’s like a hidden suffering that all women must bear in silence. No one is supposed to know when “flow comes to town” and, no matter when or where it happens, you must deal with it in silence. It can be difficult to plan—not everyone is consistent, and even when you are, occasionally it will decide to come a day or two before or after it is expected, and throw all your plans off course. Going on a long backpacking trip? Of course your period comes. Visiting a foreign country? Of course your period comes. Going to an important event like a wedding? Of course your period comes. It’s that date with a guy? Of course your period comes. It’s almost like it stalks you and preys on the most important, awkward or uncomfortable moments possible and sabotages the events in your life. Doesn’t anyone else seem to find this? or is my body the only one in cahoots to constantly disrupt my life? Travelling so much (and often in very different cultures) has shown me the extent to which—no matter where you are from, what religion you believe or government you have—women still go through this and deal with it according to their circumstances. Spending a summer in Turkey, I experienced a very different side to how women deal with taking care of themselves “down there.”
For one, there’s no sit-down flush toilets or toilet paper. There’s an open hole in the ground that you squat over, with a hose to clean yourself. Tampons don’t exist (reasons why are only my thoughts are related to religion and marriage), and often in some cultures like in Iran, one hand is for eating and the other hand is for cleaning yourself (and if you use the wrong hand for eating, it can be offensive and disgusting). I remember one horrid experi-
In some countries, you don’t even get a hose—just a jug of water to clean yourself – middle of Turkey ence where I was camping on a beach in the Republic of Georgia, hours from any kind of shop and with only a couple of people camped along the beach. I had spent the night in a tent with a guy I was seeing, and I awoke covered in blood. Yes, during the night my period had come, unexpected and early. The guy was mortified, and also concerned with how much blood there was … Tossing and turning in a sleeping bag had basic-
PHOTOS: Kylie Campbell ally covered my body, including my arms, in blood. I went to the water, embarrassed, and washed as best I could. I then hoped to see if a fellow female along the beach had any sort of sanitary napkin to plug the situation. Fortunately, there was a German couple camping nearby and the woman provided me with a tampon. Relief. Unfortunately, that event ended my relationship. With frequent adventures, I figured there must be a better way to deal with this—particularly when spending long days or overnights in the mountains. Easter long-weekend is great. We get four days of work and get to plan some real adventures because the days are longer and the weather is warmer. However, I knew my “favourite friend” would be coming with me to sabotage my ski-touring trip. So I Googled some ideas and came across the Diva Cup: basically, a plastic funnel that captures the blood; then you pour it out, give it a wash, and it can stay in all day and all night. Hard to believe this would be so convenient; it certainly proved useful during the trip. But, I mean, who doesn’t love being in the cold snow, trying to squat and manoeuvre this object to prevent blood spilling everywhere. Fortunately, the product proved to be extremely useful, but I wonder, with an upcoming trip to the Tombstones, if it will be as effective without the surrounding snow for washing and cleaning. Even when you know your period is coming, you can plan, but often (perhaps due to stress) it can come
that your body didn’t house “a little life form” that month; and for some of us, we never will. We can try hormones, such as birth control pills, to try and remove the nuisance of periods, but that works for some—not all. If we don’t want children, or had children when we were young, we can’t have our own bodies fixed to remove the burden, with tubes being tied, because we may change our minds about reproduction. I’m sure others have their own horrid period stories. You can watch the movie Carrie and, although it’s a horror movie, completely relate to how awkward and mortifying these experiences can be (and how horrible women can be to each other). I certainly have many stories of the awkward experiences of dealing with being female in this world—from gynecological exams in Turkey, to awkward questions with language barriers in Russia. Often women deal with hormonal shifts, erratic mood swings, horrid pain, costly items, and always at the worst-possible times in life and with as much grace as they can muster. To my fellow women out there: We suffer together! So, let’s try to make the word period a normal word that we can talk about together without feeling embarrassed.
much earlier than anticipated and always at exactly the wrong time. This year, as a novice mountain biker and never-before road biker, I joined a four-person team for the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay. Having practiced beforehand, the farthest I’d been on a bike was 27 kilometres, but my two legs were the equivalent of almost 60 kilometres. I rode the two legs through blistering winds over the summit, as literally everybody passed me. My legs were shaking; I felt what I thought were stitches, constantly. As I finally finished my legs, I was utterly exhausted. I went to Haines and felt like a shell of myself … How was that so hard? People three times my age were passing me ... Am I that terrible at everything? I had to eat and went to the fairgrounds for our free dinner. I was shaking and tears were streaming down my face uncontrollably. I had nothing left in me. I ate my food, cradled, and went to the bathroom to discover I was covered in blood. Yes, of course, during the race my period decided to grace me with its presence, a good week before it was supposed to come. Then, at the lowest point of my day, it was time to wash, unprepared for the moment, using toilet paper for a sanitary device. Then it was time to car camp, wake up and head home, never to do that race again. The “P” word. It’s almost a dirty word to say in public, yet half the population gets their period from age 10 to 50 (some even older). That’s potentially 480 times (or more) in your life that you will “bleed,” each time a reminder

Things that go bump in the night
Renowned dancer Peggy Baker brings her new show to Whitehorse on March 13 byy Amy Kenny
R
elieved - that’s how Peggy Baker feels to be bringing her latest choreography to the stage after more than a year of preparing for it. “We’re so ready to do this,” she said over the phone, two weeks before who we are in the dark comes to Whitehorse on March 13. “It’s going to be fantastic to get it onstage. We need an audience now.” The “we” Baker is referencing includes a pretty big team. In addition to seven dancers and a crew of artists who put together the lighting and design for the show, who we are in the dark will be travelling to seven venues across Canada with Sarah Neufeld and Jeremy Gara, both members of Grammy and Juno award-winning band Arcade Fire. The pair composed the score and will perform it live during each of the multi-media performances this spring. It’s a project Baker said she’s been thinking about since 2015, when she worked with Neufeld on a smaller-scale project that included a performance by just the two women. “It was so exciting to work with her,” said Baker, a dancer, choreographer and member of the Order of Canada. “I just thought ‘I love being around this artist and being affected by her talent and I would love my dancers to be able to be in a big project with her.’” Neufeld said the momentum and the excellent communication between the various artists involved (they were all only working on the piece in the same place, at the same time, for a total of roughly five weeks) was what part of what made the experience so memorable. Baker agreed. She has worked with Neufeld and all the dancers before, and Neufeld and Gara are used to working together, so there were connections that meant the
project wasn’t a complete unknown for anyone involved, but Baker was still amazed by how well everyone gelled. “I think this is a really special group of people. Each individual really takes responsibility for their role and they want to support one another in making a great event. There can be groups where there’s complications and stresses and it’s just magnificent where we have none of that. Every single person is just working toward the same goal of bringing this idea to life.” Kate Holden, one of the dancers, said that idea started in a way that’s typical of Baker’s style, but unique in the world of dance. It began with Baker asking the dancers to do some research. For this project, that consisted of a lot of reading, writing and thinking about the concept for the show. (in this case, the various things that darkness can represent.) From there, Baker brought words into the studio. “Words that trigger movement for us. Action words. Reach, coil. We then used those words to help generate movement,” said Holden. She said she loves working with Baker because of this method. “This approach brings more of my own creative voice into the room (than other approaches), so that, not only am I generating some of the movement, I can then infuse that movement with my point of view.” Gara and Neufeld said they felt the same about the music. Certainly, Baker has always been the bandleader when it comes to the project, but within the scope of what she wanted the work to achieve, Neufeld said they were given freedom to push themselves as musicians and really explore. Baker said that’s part of what makes the performance so emotional.
